in your soul and rise above mortal sense.
Swami, the title of today's show is
Reflecting the Divine Image. Well, first
of all, what is the Divine image?
The Divine image is the Divine creation

(01:47):
found in Genesis 1. The Truth of Being,
held, controlled, and maintained by the
Divine Principle of Perfection. The
Spiritual universe, which is the only
Life there is, can't be perceived by the
mortal sense. So, we'll talk about

(02:08):
development of the faculty which Knows
this Truth. To be truly Spiritual, we
must be as impartial as the sunshine and
the rain. In order to live and move under
the influence of Divine Idea, the Perfect
creation, which is pouring forth

(02:31):
continuously everywhere always. It's all
about knowing the
difference between thought and Idea.
The biggest problem is being confused. To
think, the thought is the Idea. The
difference between mental-material
duality. I like the term Mary Baker Eddy

(02:53):
used. Halfway position. We can't bring
forth Truth and wholeness drawing from a
halfway position, from duality.
That which is not real. And so, in order
for us to really begin to reflect the
Perfection of Being, it's helpful to

(03:16):
understand how we are not demonstrating
the Divine creation, and instead we are
experiencing an imperfect thought about
what is really here.
Well, Swami, I think I have a pretty good
example to demonstrate that. I like to

(03:36):
think I understand Divine Science, but
the other day I was on my bike and came
to a stop and I couldn't kick the shoe
out of the locking mechanism on the
pedal. So therefore, the bike and I fell.
I thought about it and it came to me.
There must be something in my
consciousness to have this accident, if

(04:00):
you will, happen to remind me I must not
believe in the Divine creation. What are
your thoughts about that?
Yeah, this is the important part of
graduating from talking about being
Spiritual and demonstrating Divine Law
with Scientific certainty. I really like

(04:21):
what Mary Baker Eddy said in Principle
and Practice. You can't just talk about
this. You don't just develop the letter
of the Truth. We develop the practice of
employing the strategy.
Consciousness is experience.
Knowing the difference between thinking,

(04:43):
which is done in duality. Duality is the
belief in two powers and Knowing, which
is the understanding of the
Divine Law of Absolute Goodness.
So when we do have these inadequate
situations and circumstances appear, we

(05:06):
have to know that they didn't come from
the Divine Principle. So we know we're
not conscious of the Divine Principle.
We're using the mind that can't bring
forth the Divine image. We're reflecting
the human concept about it, which is the
mix of good and evil. Material law for

(05:28):
every action, there is an equal and an
opposite reaction. The thing that tricks
us and fools us the most is finite good.
When things are going our way, we think
we are being rewarded by Divine
revelation. Not necessarily so. Here's
what we want to focus on is knowing the

(05:49):
difference between receiving Divine
revelation and finite good.
Mortal mind is presented in three modes.
Instinct, appetite, preservation, and
survival. Animal magnetism.
There's also this idea
of human intelligence.

(06:11):
We're working with human thought and we
make our distinctions. We discriminate
between good and bad. We do know all the
good, beautiful, and true attributes
belong to the Divine.
But human good is not the same as
Spiritual substance. So

(06:31):
there is a distinction.
One of the things Mary Baker Eddie was
concerned with was human satisfaction. In
a state of what she called mental
exhilaration or mental drunkenness, you
could be further from Divine Truth. And
yet you think you are the image and

(06:54):
likeness of the Divine. So learn how to
make this much more accurate distinction
between thoughts and Ideas.
So Swami what is interesting about what
had happened the day with the fall is I
got up, dusted myself off, I wasn't hurt,
the bike wasn't damaged, and went on

(07:15):
about my day. Well, interestingly enough,
the next day I woke up and I noticed I
had some soreness in my body and sure
enough I had a couple of bruises. So I
really had to think about that most of
the day. What really happened? Can you
give us an explanation as to how you
would interpret that and analyze that?

(07:38):
Well, this is what we're talking about,
the idea of not just denial of the
testimony of the senses. We have to
affirm the Truth. To demonstrate Divine
law, you need the Principle and the idea.
What's working here is the concept of the
Love of God. Karmic law, which is

(08:01):
material law, what we put out is what we
get back. For every action there is an
equal and an opposite reaction. Karmic
law is the Love of God, not letting us
accept anything less than the Truth of
our being. Even though you seem to have
had an inspirational event, you seem to

(08:25):
have had an accident and nothing
happened, but we think we are under the
government of Spiritual Law, where there
are no accidents. It's the ultimate
prophylactic that prevents anything from
happening to us. We are in constant
surveillance here. Just because we had

(08:48):
the coincidence between the human and the
Divine the other day may not necessarily
be so for today. We can't stockpile
Spiritual attributes. They have to be
renewed continuously. Keep the mind in
constant relation with the Divine idea.

(09:10):
The fall from Eden in the Bible is one
bite of an apple from one of these trees.
It's very easy for us to fall out of
Divine consciousness back into any one of
these modes of mortal thought. And some
of them are very deceptive. I like what
it says in Revelations. Looks like a

(09:32):
lamb, speaks like a dragon. You're
drawing from duality. And that's why we
need a perfect Spiritual practice to
maintain this level of consciousness and
degree of awareness that enables us to
live under the privilege of Divine Law

(09:52):
and not fall back into karmic law. We use
the events, circumstances, situations,
our physical body as the check engine
light on the dashboard of consciousness
because consciousness is experience. When
you're working with the standard
established with Christian Science or the

(10:15):
message of the Christ, you really want to
be bearing the fruits of the Spirit.
Offense is your best defense. Being able
to heal the sick, reform sin or raise the
dead is where we glorify the Creator.
That's what we call worshiping God.
It was very interesting as I look upon

(10:37):
these bruises as the pull of the mortal
mind just trying to say, "Oh no, that was
an accident. God isn't real. Now that I
am well aware of Divine Science, I can
really look at these situations
differently." That is a good place for us
to start when things
like that happen to us?
Oh absolutely. This idea of Principle and

(11:00):
practice. If we didn't have the testimony
of our corporeal senses, there would be
no way of us knowing what we are
conscious of. So we definitely want to
use the testimony of our senses. The
biggest problem in Spiritual advancement
is this thing in Yoga we call avidya,

(11:21):
ignorance, where we're mistaken, the
impermanent for the permanent. We're
still working with our concept of the
Divine Principle. We're working with
human thought about it and it's a halfway
position. I like what Mary Baker Eddy
said, "Felt ye the power of the word."
We're groping around until we have the

(11:43):
birth of Christ in consciousness. We
really don't know the Truth. So we start
with a belief in the Divine creation. We
believe God is
running a perfect universe.
Belief in this Divine Principle, however,
graduates to what's called faith. Faith
is starting to demonstrate. You're

(12:06):
starting to have a profound effect on
circumstances and situations. You're
starting to see the coincidence between
the human and the Divine. We don't make
anything Spiritual. We only reflect what
is always true about Life.

(12:26):
Why is it that which comes from the
Divine can be used for others? This is an
important question for me. Spirit is
omnipresent and omnipotent. In Spiritual
Truth there is only One Being and it
can't be divided. Therefore, what is good

(12:47):
for the goose is good for the gander.
Spirit is Perfect, Eternal, Changeless.
In the light of Divine
Truth there isn't anything else.
God is all and all is Absolute Goodness.
So when we experience sickness,
suffering, disease, lack, accidents, we

(13:09):
have to note it didn't come from the
Divine Principle. We have Divine Mind,
but it only Knows Divine Truth. So where
did it come from? It came from the false
mortal sense of what we're calling life.
What we're looking at with our corporeal
senses isn't the Divine creation. We're

(13:33):
seeing what isn't there. And once we
react to it, we react to it because we
believe it's real. It is our belief in
what we are perceiving on a mortal level
that gives it the appearance of power. It
gives it the life it doesn't even have.
So we start with this idea of being able

(13:56):
to control how we think. Eventually stop
thinking. We overcome these modes of
mortal thought and then we let Divine
Mind do its thinking in our awareness.
How we think is what we become.
Everything is going to be dependent on
what mode of thinking am I using? Am I

(14:20):
using one of the dualistic modes or am I
working with Divine Mind in the Absolute
which doesn't have
any negative opposition?
We're going to pause right here to work
from our sponsor. Listeners, we'll be
back with you in just a few moments.
Kriya Yoga Theory 2 is a unique and

(14:42):
revolutionary practice and forum designed
to facilitate the growth process in human
development. Apotheosis is a real
experience and has an evidence procedure.
You cannot lead someone to permanent
change by doing for them
what they must do themselves.
Personal accountability and

(15:02):
responsibility are the foundation of
Kriya Yoga Theory 2. You must be engaged
and devoted. Prana Power brings virtue to
overcome fear, wisdom to overcome
ignorance, purpose to overcome
selfishness,
enthusiasm to overcome laziness.
Kriya Yoga is a path of action, knowledge

(15:24):
and devotion. These sessions are a
celestial positioning system to guide the
individual into union with the Divine.

Welcome back. For those who are just

(15:44):
joining us, you're listening to The Voice
of Yoga and we are talking consciousness.
So Swami, we use the phrase mental
landscape quite often. Can you explain to
us how we would use the mental landscape
to support the Divine idea?
Like Mary Baker Eddy said in Science and
Health, we must educate thought up to

(16:07):
spiritual apprehension. The mortal mind
can never bring forth the Divine image,
but we must master these modes of mortal
thinking before we can walk reason
through the open door of revelation.
Building a mental landscape is like using
a scaffold to get to a certain elevation

(16:30):
in a building so that you can do your
work. To be faithful and orderly with the
objects of sense make us receptive to the
deeper things of the Divine Principle.
To understand how things are working, how
the Divine Idea is everywhere always,

(16:52):
and we also have this mental-material
concept. You break it down into a
diagram. We have the Truth, which is
Principle and Idea, the Divine creation.
Mary Baker Eddy would call that God and
Man. And then we have the reflection,

(17:15):
which is mortal mind and personal sense.
This world in the Bible. Bicknell Young
wrote in Addresses 1937,
"If you have one
humanly, you have one Divinely."
The mortal concept is a reflection of the

(17:35):
Divine image, but there are contingencies
which affect the reflection. The
difference between reflection and
refraction is a good place to start. If
you notice a calm lake or a pond, it has
a mirror finish and it reflects a very

(17:59):
accurate image in the pond. If the water
is stirred, it starts to distort the
image. So this idea of
thinking is very similar.
When we are forming thoughts and
opinions, using the information coming
through our corporeal senses, we are

(18:21):
stirring the waters.
And therefore, we refract the image. When
we are calm and still and the water is
still, we are a better reflection.
However, what we are conscious of, you
can be silent and still and

(18:41):
reflecting the world mind,
or you can be silent and still and
reflecting the Divine image and likeness.
It's complicated. It's not quite as easy
as we thought it would be.
So Swami, I think some of the key questions
that we might have here is, how do we

(19:01):
refract the Divine image and then how do
we reflect it? I'll stop by reading Herb
Fitch's Revelation of St. John, Class 5a.
"And so now you have a different picture
of yourself. You have the infinite
consciousness of the Father, perfect in
all ways. You have your human

(19:22):
consciousness and it forming a concept
about your invisible spiritual body,
which is in the consciousness of God,
which is your manifest spiritual form.
This human consciousness, forming your
concept about that manifest invisible
spiritual form, out pictures an image
called your physical body.

(19:44):
Ultimately, you see as the physical body
through its problems forces you to make a
change in your concept. Each time your
invisible body, your spiritual body
coming through your human consciousness
is reproduced inadequately in the image
form. You have to make the adjustment.
And ultimately, your human consciousness

(20:04):
will be "Oned." Reaching into the infinite
consciousness and as it is "Oned", the
infinite consciousness and your individual
consciousness become the
One Divine consciousness, individualized,
which then out pictures this form, this
image body in a greater degree of
harmony." End of the quote. Swami I have a

(20:26):
curiosity about something that I just
read when he said, you have to make the
adjustment. So I'm wondering, he must not
be talking about us making an adjustment
mentally. Can you give us more
information on that?
Well, I definitely think he is saying we
have to make this mental adjustment. Part

(20:48):
of being able to make the mental
adjustment is knowing how things are
working without this mental landscape of
understanding the complexity of it. Like
he said here, "you have the infinite
consciousness of the Father, perfect in
all ways. You have your human

(21:08):
consciousness and it forming a concept
about your invisible spiritual body,
which is in the consciousness of God,
which is your manifest spiritual form.
This human consciousness forming your
concept about that manifest invisible

(21:28):
spiritual form outpictures an image
called your physical body." So what we're
dealing with is our thought about the
Divine creation. All we ever experience
is our thought about it. Now what we have
to understand is there are modes of
thinking. Three modes of mortal thought.

(21:52):
You have to master. When we are
emotional, reactive, controlled by forces
beyond our scope of power, we're
hypnotized. When we separate from that,
the terms in the Bible, born of woman,
born of man, born of Spirit, there are
degrees of understanding. We start to

(22:15):
cultivate and develop. So we separate
from the fear and we awaken from being
hypnotized, but now we're only at the
human level. There's still
work that has to be done.
Build a value system in accordance with
universal order. It's like Mary Baker
Eddy said, faithful and orderly with the

(22:36):
objects of sense. Make us receptive to
the deeper things of the Divine
Principle. We have to qualify. This is
the hero's journey, the
labors and tasks of Hercules.
We have to be able to accomplish. So you
cultivate your human capabilities, human

(22:57):
will, human intelligence before you can
surrender it to the Divine Will. It's not
just a declaration that I'm Spiritual and
it is this birth of Christ in
consciousness, which is of the utmost
importance. We don't get that until we

(23:18):
are able to be still by stilling the
activity of the mortal mind, working with
information, coming through the corporeal
senses. We can then disconnect the
influence coming from what seems to be
this outside world. And now we can
reconnect it to the invisible, intangible

(23:41):
Divine Omnipresence.
Spirit being whole doesn't report in the
mortal mind. So we're not looking for
something. We're looking for nothing that
is not stimulating the activity of the
mortal mind, which works on contrast.

(24:02):
The Absolute, Spirit is a
completely different medium.
So in this Silence and Stillness, when we
are conscious of Divine Mind, we watch,
we wait, we listen, and we let Divine
Mind reveal Itself to us.
This is called the birth

(24:24):
of Christ in consciousness.
What the Christ does is it's the
interface. It's what makes the invisible,
intangible Divine Omnipresence
comprehensive to human consciousness.
Now, in that Silence, you Know that I am
God. Know the Truth and it makes you

(24:45):
free. Knowing the Truth dissolves the
belief in the mental-material false sense
of existence we're all reacting to. When
we let the Lord build the house, when
Divine Mind is doing Its Thinking in your
awareness, then of course it's revealing

(25:07):
or bringing forth the fruits of the
Creator, not the human concept about it.
So Swami, how would you suggest that we
evaluate the human experience?
Well, what I've done is I've based it on
a tried and true paradigm. There must be

(25:30):
a standard to measure advancement. In
this model, we use the Principle because
life without Principle doesn't have
direction or purpose, which then enables
the human to grow like a
tree, not like a human.
We're designed to reflect the Divine

(25:51):
image and likeness, provided we prepare
ourselves and develop the faculty that
enables us to receive Divine revelation.
The purpose of this incarnation is to
glorify the Creator. We glorify the
Creator when we bear the fruit of the

(26:12):
Divine creation. To fulfill the promises
of Scripture, the command is "Ask in my
name." My name means my likeness. We must
know ourselves in the way we are known by
the Creator, which is Spirit. To be
Spirit means you are One.

(26:34):
Spirit being Whole, Complete, everywhere,
always, can't be divided. It doesn't have
the same limitations
the mortal concept does.
But we also must be in a position where
we are proving we are
conscious of this Divine creation.

(26:57):
Divine Truth in consciousness resolves
things into thoughts and exchanges the
objects of sense for the Divine Idea.
This is why healing is
so important in this work,
demonstrating the
Omnipresence of the Divine creation.

(27:17):
How do we know that we are
reflecting the Divine creation?
Well, we know all the good, beautiful, and true
attributes belong to the Divine. So we're
looking for that coincidence between the
human and the Divine. We definitely know
when we are sick or suffering or lack or

(27:40):
experiencing accidents, we are not
conscious of the Divine creation. And so
we treat things differently. We stand
porter at the door of our thought, and we
experiment. How am I thinking? We know
fear is the defense mechanism for

(28:00):
the false sense of self.
So if your inner environment is anxious
or fearful, there is concern and doubt,
you know you're not conscious of Divine
Truth. The other thing is human
satisfaction can become a bigger
obstruction than problems. So test what

(28:24):
it is that you're doing consistently.
And make sure that you are getting this
coincidence between the human and the
Divine. You are bringing forth all the
good, beautiful, and true attributes on a
very consistent level, and that you're
not doing it from a personal sense of

(28:46):
self. You have become impartial. You're
not using a discriminating mind and
working with a conditioned consciousness.
You are pure of heart, and you are not
forming thoughts and opinions based on a
good and evil reality system.

(29:10):
You are Knowing the Omnipresence of the
Perfection of Being.
