Swami, the title today's show is "Secrecy,

(01:34):
the Womb of Spiritual Life."
Sounds like an interesting title.
How can you describe that to us?
Yeah, we're looking at the importance of
methodology in initiating the
developmental process for humans.
The first thing is recognizing the need

(01:55):
for initiation before we
then look for the how-to.
By living instinctually, we survive, but
there is no Spiritual growth.
In John 3:3, and I'll read it, "Jesus
answered and said unto him, Verily,

(02:16):
verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be
born again, he cannot
see the kingdom of God."
End of quote.
Today, we can look at the practice and
the process presented by the Spiritual
Science of Kriya Yoga and compare it with

(02:37):
some of the suggestions that come out of
Christian Science and
even the Infinite Way.
In a similar way, we put a seed in the
ground to germinate and then nurture it.
We prepare the mind-body complex to
receive Divine Inspiration, then keep it

(03:00):
in the Silence and
Stillness of Divine consciousness.
Swami, could you clarify a little bit
more about what we mean
by secrecy in the womb?
Yeah, in the Bible in Matthew 6:6, Jesus
gives us some insight
into this, and I'll read it.
"But thou, when thou prayest, enter into

(03:24):
thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy
door, prayed to thy Father, which is in
secret, and thy Father, which seeth in
secret, shall reward thee openly."
End of quote.
I really like stuff like this, especially
when they use secret.

(03:46):
For me, I think what he's trying to say
is Spirit is invisible and
intangible to corporeal sense.
So it goes unnoticed on a human-sense
level, and the Father is in secret.
But praying is also

(04:07):
communion with the Divine.
In order to commune with the Divine, we
must know ourselves Spiritually.
This is the like attracts like that's so
important in understanding
the physics of Spirituality.
Swami, how would we know when that

(04:28):
happens, when Divine Mind takes over the
government of our being?
Well, I like to use the fruits.
We use the testimony of our corporeal
senses as the check engine light on the
dashboard of consciousness.
Consciousness is experience.

(04:48):
So if we are conscious of the Divine
creation, then of course the external
image must have Divine qualities.
So in the event that we're experiencing
lack, limitations, sickness, suffering,
disease, we know we're not
conscious of Divine Truth.

(05:11):
This is the importance of understanding
the nature of Spirit and also
understanding the nature of error in
conjunction with the nature of prayer.
It's what Joel Goldsmith
recommends in the Infinite Way.
You have to see this from

(05:32):
a very broad perspective.
You can't just go with
one and not the other.
You can't say God is all, and you haven't
made any accommodations for what is
appearing in our corporeal senses.
That's why Mary Baker
Eddy is so against pantheism.

(05:54):
It creates a contradiction, and so you
don't have the logic, the order, and
predictability of the
operations of Divine Mind.
And in order to make this work, you
really have to have
all your ducks in order.

(06:15):
So we must Know the Truth, and to do that
you need the Principle and
then this idea of the rule.
We can't invite Divine expression into our
experiences as a human being.
God doesn't speak to humans, so we must

(06:39):
know ourselves in the
way that we are known.
Prayer is communion with the Divine.
It is in this Oneness we are able to be
conscious of the Divine Principle.
And the minute we are out of the Father's
house in a personal sense

(07:01):
of self, we interfere with
the expression of the Divine Principle.
We have an interesting passage here from
Joel Goldsmith from Beyond Words and
Thoughts from chapter
one, and I'll read it.
You might rightly ask, "Then what is the
good of all this teaching?

(07:22):
What is the good of all the years of
study of these books?"
And I will say to you that the experience
will not come without that.
The study, the practice, the listening,
and the reading are the steps that break
down the mortal sense into which we were
born, that enable us to die to mortal
sense and to be reborn.

(07:44):
Probably without the reading that I had
been doing in the Bible and the Christian
Science writings, and without all those
years from 1909 until 1928, in which I
was breaking my heart and head trying to
find God, the experience
might not have come to me."
End of his passage.
Swami, your thoughts.

(08:05):
Yeah, again, this is
what we're talking about.
There are things we can and we must do.
Mary Baker Eddy calls it the letter of
Truth and the Spirit of Truth.
We need it all.
You can't expect to demonstrate Divine
Law with Scientific certainty without

(08:25):
having all of this in place, but you
can't just do it
academically and intellectually.
We have to develop the faculty
that will enable us to
perceive the Divine Creation.
Without it, there's no
way of Knowing the Truth.

(08:47):
Swami, Joel says that we have to die to
mortal sense and to be reborn.
What does that mean to you?
Well, this is what Jesus recommended, but
it's not just a declaration.
You don't just say, "I'm Spiritual."
This idea of the secrecy of the womb of

(09:07):
Spiritual Life, there's a
process that happens here.
When matter and mind come together with
the Omnipresent Spiritual Principle of
the universe, our bodies
come in with a pattern.
We look for food, mother, and approval.
We draw from particles and waves-- change

(09:30):
the reward circuits of our brain, so we
are no longer looking
for matter and mind.
It comes down to this idea
of what is it do we desire?
Do we sow to the flesh,
or do we sow to the Spirit?
And once you understand the value of this,

(09:54):
you free yourself from all of the
unnecessary dependencies most of us
struggle with because we don't know how
to separate from the
pattern of the physical body.
And in Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy
gives you your first course of action,

(10:14):
which is allay the fear.
Fear being the defense mechanism for the
false sense of self.
When Joel says that we have to die to
mortal sense, we have to give up this
belief in mortality, period.
We have to know ourselves to be Spirit,

(10:37):
which is Eternal,
Perfect, Whole, Changeless.
We have a writing from Mary Baker Eddy
that could probably help us more, and
this is from her book
Christian Healing from page 14.
I'll read it.
"The preparation for a metaphysical
practitioner is the most
arduous task I ever performed.

(10:58):
You must first mentally educate and
develop the Spiritual sense or perceptive
faculty by which one learns the
metaphysical treatment of disease.
You must teach them how to learn,
together with what they learn.
I waited many years for a student to
reach the ability to teach.
It included more than they understood.

(11:19):
Metaphysical or Divine Science reveals
the Principle and method of perfection,
how to attain a mind in harmony with God,
in sympathy with all that is right and
opposed to all that is wrong, in a body
governed by this mind."
End of that passage.
Swami, do you have any insights that we can
learn from this passage?

(11:41):
Yeah, well, this is what we're talking
about, this idea of developing the
faculty that enables us to
perceive the Divine operations.
It's a process, and it's not just
something as simple as you might think.
We have to separate our
identity from the physical form.

(12:03):
We have to rebirth the physical body with
this new symbol for validation.
And then from there, there are stages in
development that we go through.
And if we don't understand how we go from
unconscious awareness, to self-conscious
awareness, to super-conscious awareness,

(12:27):
and we don't have the ability to control
how we think and eventually stop forming
thoughts and opinions based on
information coming through the corporeal
senses and make our minds an avenue of
awareness for the
operation of Divine Mind.
So that Divine Mind can do Its Knowing in

(12:49):
our awareness, then there's very little
chance you will be demonstrating Divine
Law with any kind of certainty.
To strengthen your points, Swami, we have
from Mary Baker again from "Miscellaneous
Writings, The Way,"
page 355, and I'll read it.

(13:10):
"The present stage of progress in
Christian Science presents two opposite
aspects, a full orb to
promise and a gaunt want.
The need, however, is not of
the letter, but the Spirit.
Less teaching and good healing is today
the acme of well done, a healing that is
not guesswork, chronic recovery, ebbing

(13:32):
and flowing, but instantaneous cure.
This absolute demonstration
of science must be revived.
To consummate this desideratum, mortal
mind must pass through
three stages of growth."
End of her passage.
Swami, again, what are your thoughts?
Well, again, this is what we're talking
about, how the instruction Mary Baker

(13:55):
Eddy is giving dovetails with everything
we do in Kriya Yoga.
There is a process, there
are stages in development,
there are degrees of awareness that all
have to be in place and accomplished on
an individual, personal level before we

(14:18):
can actually walk reason
through the open door of Revelation.
Yeah, we have to resolve the physical body into
a mental image capable of
receiving Divine Revelation;
and then we have to enable Divine Mind to

(14:38):
exchange the objects of
sense for the Divine Idea.
As Mary Baker Eddy says in her
instruction, we must live above corporeal
sense and correct it.
This is what she's saying, you want
inspiration and demonstration.
Spirit is a demonstrable Principle and it

(15:03):
testifies with deeds, not words.
So if we're not getting the coincidence
between the human and the Divine, if our
experiences aren't imbued with Divine
qualities, we have to go back to the
drawing board because you can't be

(15:23):
conscious of the Divine
Principle and having problems.
We're going to pause right here to hear a
word from our sponsor.
Listeners, we'll be back
with you in just a few moments.

Welcome back.
For those who are just joining us, you're
listening to The Voice of Yoga and we are
Talking Consciousness.
Swami, how does Mary Baker Eddy's 3
Stages of Growth

(16:48):
dovetail with Kriya Yoga?
Yeah, see, the 8 essential stages of
Kriya Yoga break down
into practices and a process.
The practices are a path of action, a
path of knowledge,
and a path of devotion.
The process is where we go from

(17:09):
unconscious awareness, to self-conscious
awareness, to super-conscious awareness.
And then when you start to look at the
different suggestions that are made, Yoga
begins with Yama, control.
Of course, this isn't manipulation, it's
self-control, self-mastery.

(17:31):
The Yamas are the abstentions,
non-injury, non-lying, non-stealing,
non-greed, non-sensuality, which when you
start to open them up, this idea of
non-sensuality is one of the most
misunderstood instructions

(17:51):
in the Yoga community today.
It means Brahmacarya,
means carrier of Brahman.
This is their concept of born of Spirit,
where we have this union of the mind-body
complex with the invisible, intangible,

(18:13):
Divine Omnipresence.
Without that, there's no
growth in consciousness.
And then when you move Yoga into Niyama,
your first Niyama is purification.
Then austerity, contentment, sacred
study, and attunement to the Absolute,

(18:36):
the Divine Principle.
And as you start to unbox Christian
Science, one of the things I learned was
in reading Gilbert Carpenter, he wrote in
Mary Baker Eddy, Her
Spiritual Footsteps, about her life.

(18:57):
And even though she wasn't under this
guided instruction and tutelage from a
metaphysical or mystical system, you can
see how just through her normal everyday
life that she was
employing very similar strategies.

(19:19):
And I'll read that passage.
"The early environment of Mary Baker Eddy was
Calvinistic, which means that the whole
trend of thought at that time was on the
serious side,
with long sermons and solemn Sabbaths.
But Mrs. Eddy was reaching out for
warmth and joy
and, not finding it in the

(19:40):
church of her fathers,
she sought it in the intellect,
in literature, and in poetry.
It is reasonable to believe
that this early solemnity
of thought was a better field to
take off from,
than would be one so grown up
with beautiful vegetation, that it offered little
opportunity
for an airplane to taxi around,

(20:02):
in order to gain the necessary speed.
You must have a clear field for a good takeoff,
and the barren Calvinistic field was well
suited to this purpose. "
End of this passage.
Swami, your thoughts on this.
Yeah again, see, this is
why we enlist purification.
Our lifestyle today, the way we're

(20:24):
socialized, we don't think right, we
don't breathe right, we're not hydrated,
the foods we eat produce
cravings and disturbances.
We don't even exercise right in order to
achieve what Mary Baker Eddy would call
your highest understanding of right.

(20:48):
In The Prodigal Son, this story about the
boy that squandered his inheritance and
wanted to return to the father's house is
really something that we
look at on an individual level.
We are out of the father's house.

(21:10):
What's very important is once the boy
makes the effort to return to the
father's house, then the
father runs out to meet him.
This is all symbolic for once we make an
effort on a personal level and we want to

(21:31):
Know the Truth, then the Divine Principle
will start to meet us and then assist us
in this effort, which is something you
will start to experience.
Once you employ some of the strategies
like skillful use of

(21:53):
thought, what is thinking right?
Putting God first.
Well, what does that
look like when I'm doing it?
Well it means that you use what is
essential to your seemingly human
existence as your symbol for validation.

(22:14):
Your number one need is thought.
And thought is invisible and our bodies
have needs, so to speak.
The body is looking for something visible
and tangible to validate itself.
In Kriya Yoga we use breath, your number

(22:37):
two life-sustaining force, but there's a
direct relationship between
life-sustaining force number one and
life-sustaining force number two.
Your rate of breath
equals your rate of thought.
But if you're not thinking right, you've
got a bad habit in your number one

(22:58):
life-sustaining force.
If you don't have a value system that's
in accordance with universal order.
So we have to think right.
We have to breathe right.
Getting maximum volume of oxygen is
essential in calming the fears coming

(23:19):
from the physical body.
And so you start to see the similarities
in attaining the promises
given to us in scripture.
If you want to induce the God experience,
these are some things we can and we must

(23:40):
do in order to be able to experience what
Mary Baker Eddy calls
the Spirit of Truth.
We have a quote here from Healing by
Martha Wilcox and I'm going to read it.
"If we think that we find health only as

(24:01):
we eradicate disease, we
perpetuate the disease.
Our knowledge of the one God is our
health and is what
vanishes disease permanently.
When Truth was revealed to us through
Christian Science that man is as Perfect
as God is Perfect, it was also revealed

(24:21):
to us the fact that Spiritual unfoldment
is the healing process."
End of that quote, Swami your takeaways.
Yeah, again, we start to see this a
process, this development of the faculty
that enables us to Know the Truth.

(24:41):
Healing isn't really
the way we think it is.
We think we have a sick
body and it gets well.
What really happens
is we change our minds.
We change how we think
about what's really here.

(25:02):
We don't change the Divine Creation.
The Divine Creation is
Perfect everywhere always.
We see what isn't here.
We see our thought about that.
It's a concept.
In that same work, Martha Wilcox gives

(25:22):
the example of looking at a white horse
with green glasses and of course the
horse appears as green.
But she also says we don't try and remove
the green from the
horse, we remove the glasses.
And the same is true with healing.

(25:42):
We don't try and fix this
mortal sense of existence.
We remove the mind that is
producing the inaccurate image.
We have another
passage from Martha Wilcox.
This is from the book We Knew Mary Baker
Ready, pages 471, 472, and I'll read it.

(26:05):
"In Luke 16:10, "He that is faithful in
that which is least is faithful also in
much, and he that is unjust in the least
is unjust also in much.
If therefore ye have not been faithful in
the unrighteous mammon, who will commit
to your trust the true riches?
And if ye have not been faithful in that

(26:29):
you that which is your own?"
Mrs. Eddy no doubt realized that at my stage
of growth I thought of creation, that is
all things, as separated into two groups,
one group Spiritual and the other group
material, and that somehow I must get rid
of the group I called material.
But during this lesson I caught my first

(26:50):
glimpse of the fact that all right useful
things which I had been calling the
unrighteous manmon were mental and
represented Spiritual Ideas.
She showed me that unless I was faithful
and orderly with the objects of sense
that made up my present mode of
consciousness, there could never be
revealed to me the truer riches or the

(27:12):
progressive higher revelations of
substance and things."
End of her passage.
Swami again, your insights.
Yeah, this is where Mary Baker Eddy tells
us to work with our
highest understanding of right.
Jesus said to be Perfect as your Father.

(27:33):
Your Father in heaven is Perfect.
We have to start to understand ourselves
to be One with the Divine Principle.
And as she had suggested that we have a
proper sense of the Infinite, that we
educate our thought up
to Spiritual apprehension.

(27:54):
And in her book, Science and Health with
Key to the Scripture, page
349:26-28, I'll read it.
"Mortal thought does not at once catch the
higher meaning and can do so only as
thought is educated up
to Spiritual apprehension." End of quote.
We have to have this mental landscape

(28:16):
that will support the Divine Idea.
As we start to rise, as our identity
starts to shift from a mental-material
basis to a Spiritual basis, as our
thought shifts from mental-material to

(28:38):
Spiritual, we are
graduating from sense to soul.
We're no longer sowing to the flesh.
Solely, we are now starting to rely more
and more on the invisible, intangible
Omnipresence; with an understanding that

(29:00):
it is Perfect, held, controlled, and
governed by the Divine Law of Eternal
Life-- without opposition.
