Voice of Yoga Welcome to the Institute
for Personal Development, Kriya Yoga
Ashram, where Total
Consciousness is the new frontier.
Kriya Yoga is union of the
individual with the Divine.
(00:22):
Join us as we explore the practices to
initiate this process.
Good morning, welcome
to the Voice of Yoga.
Let's talk consciousness.
I am your hostess, Lisa Winton, and with
me is Kenny Toy, also known as Swami
Jayananda, founder of the Institute for
Personal Development, located here in
(00:42):
Hampton, New Hampshire.
Thank you for being here today, Swami.
How are you?
Good morning.
I'm doing pretty good today.
How about you?
I'm doing great today too.
Thanks for asking.
And we'd like to thank
you all for tuning in.
Today on the Voice of Yoga, we will talk
about the concept of tempting the Divine
Principle by asking for changes.
(01:05):
In this show, we will explain the allness
and perfection of Spiritual Truth, which
prevents the belief
in any contradictions.
Listen as we discuss some of the ways
human ignorance of Eternal Life violates
the Omnipresence of Absolute Goodness.
Welcome to the Voice of Yoga.
We are talking consciousness.
(01:25):
Join the Kriya Yoga Spiritual Advance to
get the light in your
soul and trust in God.
Swami, I see that the title of today's
show is "Tempting the Hand of the Lord."
Let's kind of break down
this title a little bit.
What do we mean by
tempting the hand of the Lord?
Yeah, up until a few years ago, I thought
(01:47):
prayer was asking God and
meditation was listening to God.
Now I know differently.
God doesn't talk to what isn't there and
there is no human experience.
Prayer and meditation understood
correctly are communion with the Divine.
(02:11):
In Divine consciousness, there is no
asking or listening.
Communion is resting in the knowledge of
the Omnipresent Perfection of Being.
This is why it says "Ask in my name,"
which translates to mean "likeness."
(02:32):
Spirit is One and can't be divided.
In Truth, God can't give you anything for
a couple of reasons.
One, God isn't withholding anything.
All God is is everywhere always and It's
Perfect, Whole, Complete.
(02:55):
The other reason is
God being Omnipresent.
There's no you or me.
No persons, places, or things.
Only one Perfect Divine Life looking at
itself, as itself, of
itself, and to itself.
(03:15):
So anytime we are asking for something,
we are basically
tempting the hand of the Lord.
And what we're doing is
violating the Truth of Being.
So how do you recommend we pray?
We don't want to ask God for anything.
What does prayer really
(03:36):
mean and how do we do it?
Yeah, like I said, prayer
is communion with the Divine.
First we have to understand why would we
be tempting the Lord.
We would do that because we're not seeing
the Divine creation.
What we see with our five corporeal
(03:57):
senses is a mental concept
about the Divine creation.
It is the lie.
If we are reacting to the testimony of
the senses, it simply means we don't
believe in the Divine creation, which is
everywhere always functioning.
(04:18):
In order to pray, we must be conscious of
this Divine creation.
The reason we're not seeing it is because
we are creating this mental-material
veil which is
preventing us from seeing it.
So a big part of being able to pray
successfully is being able to stop
(04:40):
creating the interference,
stop thinking, forming thoughts and
opinions based on information coming
through our corporeal senses.
We make the mind an avenue of awareness
for the Omnipresent Divine creation, the
Perfection of Being.
(05:01):
Because Spirit is whole, it doesn't
report in the five
corporeal sense testimony.
So we have just filled our thought with
the Divine Idea, which appears
as nothing to corporeal sense.
But in that Silence and Stillness, we
(05:24):
watch, wait, listen and let Divine Mind
reveal Itself to us.
It's a two-part
authentication that has to take place.
I must be conscious of the Divine Truth.
Recognized thinking about is not the same
as being conscious of It.
(05:46):
And Divine Mind must then
acknowledge Itself as me.
This is the Oneness.
This is Spiritual identity.
One Perfect Divine
Being acknowledging Itself.
So you say we have to be conscious of
this Divine Principle.
(06:07):
We have to have this awareness.
How do we actually do that?
Is there a procedure that we have to
follow to be able to get to that point
where we have
consciousness with the Divine?
Well, in order for us to be conscious of
the Divine creation, we must develop the
faculty that will enable us to perceive
(06:28):
the Divine creation.
So, yeah, there's a lot
that has to be in place.
One of the reasons why Joel Goldsmith
used the term meditation.
Meditation, by definition,
is the seventh stage of Yoga.
It's the eighth stage of Buddhism.
There is a tremendous amount we have to
have in place before we develop the
(06:51):
faculty where we can
perceive the Divine creation.
In this show, what we want to focus on
are all the ways we are violating the
Divine law, what was
called tempting the Lord.
I see we have a verse
from Deuteronomy 6:16.
(07:12):
I'll read it.
"Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God,
as ye tempted him in Massah."
The next verse we
have is from Matthew 4:7.
"Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou
shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."
And we have another one from Luke 4:12.
"And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said,
(07:33):
Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."
Swami, what are your thoughts about these
verses we've chosen for today's program?
Well, the first one was,
"As ye tempted him in Massah."
Massah is where the
Israelites demanded water from God.
We must be a faithful witness to the
(07:54):
Divine creation, develop trust in the
Omnipresence of the Divine creation.
We can't just deny the
testimony of the senses.
Just be senselessly optimistic.
What we want to do is graduate from a
belief in the Divine creation into faith.
(08:16):
What we're looking for here is the
coincidence that happens between the
human and the Divine.
Where all the Divine qualities are
beginning to appear in
the human experience.
This is how we can test our
faith in the Divine creation.
(08:37):
Why healing is such an important aspect
in being able to determine
what you are conscious of.
Spirit is a demonstrable Principle.
It's a law.
And like we say, we must be conscious of
it in order to
activate it in our experience.
But thinking about it is not the same as
(09:01):
being conscious of it.
So this idea of developing the faculty
that is required to
perceive the Divine creation.
That's why Jesus says, "Know the Truth
and it will make you free."
Knowing is different than thinking.
We think with five corporeal senses, we
(09:22):
know with seven Spiritual senses.
So Swami that second verse when
Jesus says, "Thou shalt
not tempt the Lord thy God."
Some people might understand that to mean
that something bad would happen to us if
we were to tempt the Lord.
Can you give us an insight on that?
What we don't understand is the law of
(09:45):
karma, material law.
For every action there is an
equal and an opposite reaction.
Two things can't occupy the
same space at the same time.
It's the law of reciprocity.
What we put out is what we get back.
Spiritual law is the power of One,
(10:05):
Perfect Divine Life, without opposite.
Once you understand the dynamics of
material law, we know if we do anything,
with personal sense, with human will, we
do it for good or for bad.
But when the Lord builds the house, when
(10:27):
Divine Mind is doing Its "Thinking" in your
awareness, it can only be
done for Absolute Goodness.
But eventually you'll start to see the
only thing that is Real
is the Divine creation.
The mental-material
concept is never real.
(10:48):
There is such a thing as
finite good, which tricks us.
We accept finite good, but then because
of the nature of the beast, soon or
eventually becomes finite bad.
Whereas anything made by the Divine
Principle is Absolute
(11:09):
Goodness without any opposite.
God cannot make anything that can die.
So to answer your
question, what is temptation?
I looked it up in the dictionary.
Lure, enticement, attraction, offer,
invitation, persuasion,
appeal, desire, coaxing.
(11:31):
But how can we tempt the Lord?
We do it every time we ask for something.
Why do we ask?
Because we don't Know the Truth.
What Truth?
Life is Perfect.
God is running a Perfect universe, which
means nothing is added or taken away.
(11:55):
Once we develop a value system and a
mental landscape that will
support this Divine Principle,
then we know anything that does not have
Divine quality, the Perfection of Being.
We know it isn't real.
God did not make it.
It isn't there.
(12:17):
And we start to practice being a faithful
witness to the Divine creation instead of
reacting to the testimony
of the corporeal senses.
And as our reality shifts from a mental
material basis, which is rooted in
duality, this mix of good and evil, to a
(12:42):
Spiritual basis, which
is Absolute Goodness,
then we graduate our belief in the Divine
Principle to faith in the Divine
Principle, where it
starts to demonstrate.
We start to see that Spirit is a
demonstrable Principle.
(13:03):
It's a law.
But again, we must be conscious of it and
not just thinking
about it, to activate it.
We have a passage here
from Mary Baker Eddy.
She wrote in Christian
Healing, and I'll read it.
But why should the world hate Jesus, the
(13:23):
loved of the Father, the loved of love?
It was that his spirituality rebuked
their carnality and gave this proof of
Christianity that
religions had not given.
Again, they knew it was not in the power
of eloquence of a dead right to cast out
error and heal the sick.
End of the quote.
(13:43):
Swami it sounds like we can
break that down a little bit.
Get us started.
Well, I think this is the value of
Christian Science, as taught by Mary
Baker Eddy, is the importance of putting
healing on the table, acknowledging that
Spirit is a demonstrable
Principle, and it's provable.
(14:03):
Because if we're not demonstrating, which
is what orthodox religion basically did,
they took healing off the table.
The message of the Christ was heal the
sick, reform sin, or raise the dead.
Religion today is just
something we believe in.
It's a belief system.
(14:24):
It falls under the heading of the Easter
Bunny and Santa Claus.
Belief is the level playing field.
We can believe in
anything, and we can defend it.
But to Know the Truth that makes you free
from the belief in mortality
(14:45):
is where we want to
go with Divine Science.
And in order to do this with any degree
of success, we need a
Principle and a rule.
And of course, the
Principle is Life is Perfect.
And the rule is like attracts like.
You can't just declare that I'm
(15:06):
Spiritual, I'm Perfect, I'm Whole.
It's like me saying the principles of
mathematics are perfect, therefore my
checking account is perfect.
It might not necessarily be true, but
what we have to do is
apply the principle.
So to do that, you need
the Principle and the rule.
(15:29):
And unless we have the faculty that
enables us to perceive the Divine
creation, it's very difficult to apply
the rule because you're
not in Spiritual identity.
You can only do this in Oneness, not from
the perspective of the
many, not with the mortal mind.
(15:51):
We're going to pause right
here to a word from our sponsor.
Listeners, we'll be back
with you in just a few moments.
Kriya Yoga Spiritual Advance at Institute
for Personal Development Incorporated,
Kriya Yoga Ashram, is a complete program
(16:13):
for anyone looking to demonstrate Divine
law with Scientific certainty.
To demonstrate Divine law, conscious
awareness of Divine Truth is necessary.
The Spiritual Advance
starts with the Divine creation.
Beginning with the
Principle, Life is Perfect.
Resting in the knowledge, Life is
Eternal, formless,
(16:33):
Changeless, and Absolute Good.
The practitioner retreats from the
obstructions, which are the veiling
conditions of the mortal mind.
Then rests in the
knowledge of the Divine Principle.
Thus revealing the precept,
consciousness is experience.

(16:54):
and begin living under Spiritual Truth.
Welcome back.
For those of you who are just joining us,
you're listening to The Voice of Yoga,
and we are talking consciousness.
So Swami, how do we go from thinking with
the five corporeal senses to Knowing with
the seven Spiritual senses?
(17:18):
On a simplistic level, the outer world of
sense and the inner world of Spirit
become One when Divine
Truth is the only consciousness.
Consciousness is experience, and thinking
about is not the same
as being conscious of.
(17:39):
Here lies the difference between the
unreal and the Real.
Mortal thought is unreal,
and Spiritual Idea is Real.
We see with the material senses what
isn't real, isn't there, and we are blind
to what is there, the Divine creation.
(18:02):
Spirit is everywhere and in everything.
To open the channel of communication with
the Divine, we must be born of Spirit.
This is a process in human development
which must be initiated
and unfolds in three phases.
Until we can stop thinking
(18:22):
and start Knowing the Truth.
Remember how we think is what we become,
and there are three modes of mortal
thought along with Divine Mind.
Also, keep in mind, like attracts like.
Keep using the testimony of the corporeal
senses to check on what you are conscious
(18:45):
of and look for the coincidence between
the human and the Divine.
All the good, beautiful and true
attributes belong to the Divine, but
never believe what is appearing in the
corporeal senses is real.
So Swami, my next curiosity is, I've heard people
(19:06):
say, "Well, it looks real to
me or it feels real to me."
So how do we go from there?
How do we get past that?
Well, eventually you have
to challenge your beliefs.
Like I say, we can believe in anything,
and whether we realize it or not, we
believe we're a finite mortal being.
(19:26):
But that's not the Truth.
So we're really not trying to convince
you what you think is life isn't Life at
all, because the Bible has said that.
"Ye are dead and your life
is hid with Christ and God."
And orthodox religion just ignores it.
But if you want to demonstrate Divine law
(19:48):
with scientific certainty, then you're
going to have to Know the Truth.
And you can't Know the Truth with the
mind you're using to get
you through this lifetime.
So you're going to have
to challenge your beliefs.
Like we had read, this was one of the
main reasons why people hated Jesus,
(20:09):
because he threatened their carnality.
They don't want to give up the belief in
a finite mortal sense of life.
Swami you said earlier, to open the
channel of communication with the Divine,
we must be born of Spirit.
What does that look
like when we're doing that?
(20:29):
Yeah, to substantiate this point, I
actually wrote a post for Facebook, an
answer to a question
concerning the dark night of the soul.
I'll read it.
Earlier times had points of passage with
rites of passage, which
was called "Initiation."
(20:50):
There is a process in development for
humans which parallels the
metamorphosis of a butterfly.
Butterflies aren't born
butterflies, but caterpillars.
And caterpillars go into a chrysalis
before they emerge as the butterfly.
Humans have the same potential, but we
(21:10):
can remain in the larvae state
indefinitely, which is
where we are collectively today.
The Bible refers to the stages in human
development as born of woman, born of
man, and born of Spirit.
Born of woman is the original state of
(21:31):
consciousness, fear-based motivation,
instinct, appetite, animal magnetism,
preservation, survival.
Son of man or born of man is the
chrysalis phase for the human, where they
graduate from instinct and appetite and
fear to intelligence and reason.
(21:53):
And finally, born of Spirit or son of God
is where the human has graduated from
sense to Soul and Knows the Truth, which
brings freedom from
the belief in mortality.
The dark night of the soul is often
symbolized by the stage in development
(22:15):
where son of man becomes son of God.
But what's important to understand here,
you don't just become born of Spirit.
You had to separate from mother, you had
to embark on this hero's journey,
cultivate yourself humanly, and then walk
reason through this
open door of revelation.
(22:37):
We have to develop the faculty that
enables us to receive Divine revelation.
Swami, I see we have something here by Mary
Baker Eddy from Christian Healing page 14
that may substantiate the coincidence
between Kriya Yoga and Christian Science.
(22:57):
And I'll read it.
"The preparation for a metaphysical practitioner
is the most arduous task I ever performed.
You must first mentally educate and develop
the spiritual sense or perceptive faculty by
which one learns the metaphysical treatment of
disease; you must teach them how to learn,
together with what they learn.
(23:19):
I waited many years for a student to reach
the ability to teach; it included more
than they understood.
Metaphysical or divine Science reveals the
Principle and method of perfection,-- how to
attain a mind in harmony with God,
in sympathy with all that is right and opposed to
all that is wrong, and a body governed by this
(23:42):
mind."
End of the quote.
Swami we have a lot here to talk about
let's get started.
Yeah, I don't think you can find better instruction
in how to do this, than from Mary Baker Eddy.
Everything that she talks about is so detailed
and so in synch with the Kriya Yoga we teach.
(24:04):
And when you cross examine it and when you
look at the requirements
I really like what she said here, "you must first
mentally educate and develop the spiritual sense
or perceptive faculty
by which one learns the metaphysical
treatment of disease;"
She goes on and she says, "you must teach
(24:24):
them how to learn together with what they
learn." To be able to decipher.
What does it look like when first of all,
I developed the faculty that enables me
to receive Divine revelation, to be
instructed from within, where I am now
receiving the Divine Idea
(24:47):
directly from the creator.
There's no chance of me mistaking where
this is coming from.
It's very easy to mistake the whisperings
of the mortal mind for the Divine Idea.
Until you have had this revelation and
(25:09):
you know the difference between the
Absolute and the rational or duality.
And what she's talking about here, you
can't learn this from someone else.
This learning that she is talking about
is communion with the Divine.
(25:30):
It's one of the reasons when Jesus talks
about the comforter.
If I go not away, the
comforter cannot come.
Jesus must go away as somebody to follow
externally and reappear as
the Life of one's own self.
When we have this inner inspiration, when
(25:52):
our consciousness is now being
illuminated by the Divine Idea, it's a
very different experience than when we're
still working with thought and belief.
And this is again coming back to why it
is of the utmost importance to put
healing on the table.
(26:13):
The metaphysical or Divine Science
reveals the Principle and method of
perfection, how to attain a mind in
harmony with God, in
sympathy with all that is right.
This is not something that
you're going to get from a book.
(26:34):
To learn the metaphysical treatment of
disease, we have to learn this from the
Light within our own consciousness.
This would be referred to as the birth of
Christ in consciousness.
The Christ is the saving aspect of Truth.
(26:54):
It's what makes the Divine creation
comprehensive to human consciousness.
Without it, there's no way
of us knowing this Truth.
There's no way of being
conscious of the Divine Principle.
So Swami, what do you recommend that we
do if we find ourselves
tempting the hand of the Lord?
(27:17):
Everything is going to depend on where
you are in your development, your level
of consciousness,
your degree of awareness.
If you have not become born of man, for
example, if you haven't separated from
the fear, instinct, appetite,
(27:38):
preservation and survival, if you're not
having individuated and separated the
mind from being
individuated from the world mind,
then you might want to start with a
belief in the Divine creation.
But if you have individuated and you are
(27:59):
now ready to be born again of Spirit,
then of course you have a different game
plan because you have
more pieces in place.
If you're going to play a musical
instrument or if you are going to learn
an athletic skill, where would you start?
You'd have to start with where you are.
(28:21):
Start with your highest
understanding of right.
The old saying, "Practice
makes perfect" isn't true.
Practice makes perfect
when practice is perfect.
So educate yourself.
Learn about the Principle.
Know God aright.
(28:42):
Start building a mental landscape that
will support the Divine Idea.
And then test it.
Always looking for this coincidence
between the human and the Divine.
Changing how you're thinking, learning
how to be conscious of the invisible,
(29:04):
intangible Divine Omnipresence, and start
to see how that is affecting your
external experience.
