Welcome to the Institute For Personal Development, Inc.
"Kriya Yoga Ashram" where total consciousness
where Total Consciousness is the new frontier.
Kriya Yoga is Union of the individual
with the Divine.
(00:22):
Join us! As we explore the practices
to initiate this process.
(Music) Good morning, welcome to The Voice of
Yoga, Let's Talk Consciousness. I am your
hostess, Lisa Winton, and with me is
Kenny Toy, also known as Swami Jayananda,
founder of the Institute for Personal
Development, located here in Hampton, New
(00:43):
Hampshire. Good morning, Swami. Thank you
for being here today. How are you?
Good morning. I'm
doing pretty good today.
How about you? I'm doing great today too.
Thanks for asking. And we'd like to thank
you all for tuning in. Today on The Voice
of Yoga, we will talk about applying the
Divine Principle as a practical guide for
effective living by leaning on the
(01:05):
sustaining Infinite. In this episode, we
will discuss fear as an indicator to
determine the imitation from Divine
inspiration. Listen as we explain why we
get defensive about false belief and
shrink back into familiar behaviors
because we lack conscious awareness of
Divine Truth. Welcome to The Voice of
Yoga. We are Talking Consciousness. Join
(01:28):
the Kriya Yoga Spiritual Advance to get
the light in your soul and stand in
Truth. Swami, the title of today's
episode is, "Truth Needs No Defense."
What should we learn about this title?
Well, I think what I was inspired by is
Einstein said, "If you can't explain
(01:49):
something simply, you don't understand it
well enough." To understand the
importance of Truth is very simple.
There's only One Life and it's Perfect,
Eternal, Whole, Absolute goodness and
Changeless. It doesn't get easier than
(02:09):
that. So why are we struggling with Life
when Truth needs no defense?
It reminds me of the scene in a Peter
Sellers movie where he's in a hotel and
there's a dog in the lobby. He asks the
desk clerk, "Does your dog bite?" The
(02:32):
clerk replies, "No." Sellers reaches to
pet the dog and the dog bites him. He
looks at the clerk and the clerk says to
him, "That's not my dog." This world and
all the good and evil events we are
reacting to are not Life. Life is hid
(02:54):
with Christ in God. Colossians 3:3. To
begin to understand Life, we can begin
with the nature of error, which is the
mental, material illusion believed to be
Life. We can affirm the Truth, which is
(03:16):
the omnipresence of the Divine Principle
of Eternal Life everywhere always.
But we must move into the Christ, which
is the saving aspect of Truth, the
interface which makes the Divine creation
comprehensive to human consciousness.
(03:39):
And so in this show, what I'd really like
to get down to is this idea Truth needs
no defense. We do not have to defend
Truth. What we want to understand is how
do we employ Truth? We don't do it by
trying, striving, struggling, seeking,
(04:01):
planning, or even asking. We employ Truth
by Knowing, by resting in the knowledge.
God is running a Perfect universe.
So Swaimi we say that Truth needs no
defense, and I'm probably polarizing
here, does that mean Truth needs us to be
(04:22):
offense, have some
offensive maneuvers or practices?
Yeah, like we say in athletics, offense
is your best defense.
And in this case, your offense is in
Knowing. If you do not know the Truth,
then what you will
(04:42):
find is you get defensive.
The symptoms we work with, guilt, shame,
anger, resentment,
blame, emptiness, and boredom.
Fear is the defense mechanism for the
false sense of self. Everything we call
helpful, the idea of
(05:03):
preservation and survival.
What Mary Baker Eddy called animal
magnetism is this fear that something can
go wrong. And it's quote unquote natural.
But like the Bible says, what natural man
doesn't have is Spiritual Life. We can't
(05:26):
be afraid of anything and be a faithful
witness to the Divine creation. So it
creates this interference pattern. We
live under what's called karmic law,
material law, and it is driven by the
belief in two powers. But at some point
(05:47):
you come to the realization that it's a
belief. It's not a something. The only
Self-Existent power in this universe is
Spirit and Spirit is the only Reality.
And so coming back to what we're saying,
Life is Eternal, Immortal. There's no
(06:10):
opposition in Life. There's no death in
Eternal Life. And therefore there are
none of the things that lead to death,
sickness, suffering, disease, accidents.
None of this exists in Truth. And so we
(06:31):
spend most of our time trying to protect
and endure this false sense of existence.
But what we never get around to is
Knowing the Truth, becoming free from the
belief in mortality.
So one of the things we could start to
work with is that if I do have fear, and
(06:54):
there are a lot of us who say, well, I'm
not afraid of anything, but then the
other aspects of fear, which are guilt,
shame, anger, resentment, blame,
emptiness and boredom. These are the
things we struggle with on a regular
basis. But we have to understand is they
are all part of the false sense of
(07:17):
existence. It all comes out of what is
called duality. And duality is under the
law of karma, driven by this belief in two
powers. But it's not Self-Existent power
and it's not the Truth.
Swami, you used the word knowing. So
(07:39):
can you help us by letting
us know where do we begin?
Yeah, to begin to understand Life, we can
begin with the nature of error, which is
the mental material illusion believed to
be life. We can affirm the Truth, which
(08:00):
is the omnipresence of the Divine
Principle of Eternal Life everywhere,
always, once we Know the Truth. And like
Paul told us, Life is hid with Christ in
God. So the thing we want to start to
(08:20):
understand is what is Christ? Christ is
the saving aspect of Truth. It's what
makes the Divine creation comprehensive
to human consciousness.
This was what was called thinking
differently, to think
with the Mind of Christ.
There are a lot of things that must be in
(08:42):
place in order for us to experience this
birth of Christ in consciousness.
One of the things we start to do is
understand the nature of error. Why would
you want to come out of this mental
material world of energy? And the reason
is-- it's not whole. The reason is it's in
(09:06):
half. It's a concept. It's a belief. It's
not the Truth. Now, in order for us to be
born again of Spirit,
we must really master the mind-body
complex. You don't just declare that I'm
(09:26):
Spiritual. We literally have to rebirth
the body in the invisible, intangible
Divine omnipresence. You can't call
Spirit into awareness when you are
conscious of a finite form.
We must know ourselves in the way we are
(09:48):
known by the Creator, which is Spirit.
And Spirit is whole. It's complete. It's
everywhere always. There is only one.
It's not I have my Spirit and you have
your Spirit. Then when we're doing that,
we're working with the mind that can't
(10:09):
bring forth the Divine image. You're
working with a concept about being
Spiritual. This is the nature of error.
It's karmic law. It's material law. For
every action, there is an equal and an
opposite reaction. The mind can't free
itself from its own creation. It's the
(10:31):
nature of the beast. Completion cannot
take place in the mental-material world
of energy. To experience this, we have to
transform, which literally means trans,
go through form. I like what Mary Baker
Eddy told us, health and matter must be
(10:52):
given up for health in Spirit. We have
to come out of the belief in mortality,
the belief in good and evil,
and then Know ourselves to be One with
this Divine creative Principle. And in
that Oneness, then we have opened the
(11:14):
channels of communication to the
invisible, intangible Perfection of
Being. And so there's no longer going to
be any trying, striving, struggling,
seeking, planning or asking. We rest in
the knowledge. Life is Perfect everywhere
(11:34):
always. And this is why we say Truth
needs no defense because there's no
opposition to the Perfection of Being.
So, Swami, just a quick question about
the Colossians 3:3 verse you read
earlier. Life is hid with Christ in God.
(11:56):
We're talking about life with a capital L
meaning Divine Life, is that right?
Well, yeah, we want to make a distinction
between the mental-material world of
energy, duality, the concept about it.
And this was what the Bible called
separating the wheat from the tares, the
(12:16):
unreal from the real. This is why in
scripture they use the term sin. Sin is
an archery term. It means missing the
mark. We're in the wrong self, but we
think we are knowing the Truth with the
mind that can't possibly Know the Truth.
(12:36):
And of course, we don't have any
leadership today in how to take these
seven steps from sense to Soul.
Revelations in the Bible is an incredible
work, but you have to understand the
instruction that has been given there.
And until we have that, we continue to
(12:59):
try and know the Truth with the mind that
can't bring forth the Divine image. The
thing that we have done so far is
eliminate the evidence procedure and we
eliminate the litmus test.
The one form of Christianity I have found
on the planet that doesn't do that is
(13:21):
Christian Science. Mary Baker Eddy put
healing on the table. That's why she
called it a science. It has an evidence
procedure. If you are conscious of Divine
Truth and you Know this Truth, then you
reveal the Divine creation. That's the
dynamics of a miracle. Jesus didn't come
(13:45):
here to patch up God's handiwork. Jesus
came to reveal the Truth. Life is
Perfect. What we're calling life isn't
life at all. It's a concept about it.
And what we don't have now is the
methodology of how to develop the faculty
(14:08):
that enables us to perceive the Truth and
demonstrate the Truth.
Spirit is a demonstrable Principle. It's
the law. But we must be conscious of it
in order to demonstrate.
Swami you had said just a bit ago, we
can affirm the Truth, which is the
(14:28):
omnipresence of the Divine Principle of
Eternal Life. Well, exactly. How would we
go about to do that?
Well, again, in order to affirm the
Truth, you can do it on different levels.
You could start with a belief in the
Truth. The thing you'll start to notice
is we can believe in anything. Whether we
(14:51):
realize it or not, we believe we are a
finite mortal being.
Belief is the entry level here. It's a
hypnotic state. We've learned that with
thought and belief we can change finite
bad to finite good. And so we can believe
in God. We can believe in miracles.
(15:16):
Belief in Truth, however, graduates to
faith. Faith is where your belief in
Truth starts to demonstrate. It starts to
reveal itself in the testimony of the
corporeal senses.
Consciousness is experience.
(15:37):
Once you have graduated to belief in
Truth and it now is faith in Truth, then
you continue to practice using this as
your new mode of operation. You start to
realize, we don't try. It's not my will.
We don't think thought is contaminated.
(15:59):
It has good and bad aspects in each
thought. Divine idea, Spirit thinks in
terms of the absolute. There's absolute
goodness. It's not good health and bad
health. It's absolute health. And so the
process here as we go from belief to
(16:22):
faith eventually to understanding is how
you would start to learn
how to affirm the Truth.
The other thing that I suggest is this
idea of building a mental landscape that
will support the Divine Idea, developing
a value system that is in accordance with
(16:44):
universal order so that you are educating
your thought up to
Spiritual apprehension.
Mary Baker Eddy told us, "Mortal mind
does not at once catch the higher
meaning." So we work with this mortal
mind and human will until eventually we
(17:06):
walk reason through the open door of
Revelation, where Divine Mind now takes
over the Scientific
government of your being.
We're going to pause right here to hear a
word from our sponsor. Listeners, we'll

(18:12):
Welcome back. For those of you who are
joining us, you are listening to The
Voice of Yoga and we are talking
consciousness. Swami
I'd like to do a deeper dive into why you
say the life that we're
living right now is false.
Yeah, Spirit is the only Self-Existent
power. Eternal Life is the only Life. And
(18:37):
this life is without opposite. And as I
learned from Mary Baker Eddy, one with
God is the majority.
Stand in fear and you stand to lose.
Like we say, fear is the defense
mechanism for the false sense of self.
(18:57):
And the reason is because it relies on
belief for existence. If we do not
believe we're a finite mortal being, then
it falls apart. One of the biggest
barriers in Spiritual advancement is
celebrity pseudo-spiritualism, which
(19:20):
represents its concept of Spirit to be
warm and fuzzy, all loving
and caring for personal sense.
My truth, my feelings. This is the wolf
in sheep's clothing and a very poisonous
image to accept and believe. The Divine
(19:43):
Principle is no respecter of person. And
it is a threat to the
false sense of self.
Because in Truth, there isn't a mortal,
temporary life. Like Paul told us, life
is hid with Christ in God. And so we stay
(20:05):
attached to the false sense of self. And
then, of course, we deal with the
symptoms of guilt, shame, anger,
resentment, blame,
emptiness, and boredom. Why?
Because there is an innate drive in all
of us we want to be whole. Why?
(20:25):
Because karmic law is the Love of God,
not letting us accept anything less than
our Divine inheritance, our true Self,
which is Spirit, Perfect,
whole, everywhere, always.
(20:46):
Swami let's go back to what you had said
earlier. One with God is the majority.
Now, the word one, you're not talking
about one person humanly. Can you give us
a description of this phrase?
Yeah, the idea of One Life, One Being. In
the light of Divine Truth, it dissolves
(21:08):
the belief in the many. The mental
material world of energy dissolves; only
the Divine creative Principle exists.
There is only One Eternal, Perfect Life.
And the litmus test for your
understanding of this Divine Principle is
(21:31):
dominion. Like Mary Baker Eddy says, one
with God is the majority. You don't need
external reinforcement or support. When
you Know the Truth and you walk in the
kingdom of heaven on earth, all that the
Father has is Thine. There's no asking,
(21:53):
there's no seeking or looking for
anything. Even terms, say for example,
like humility. From a human standpoint,
we think false modesty is the request
here. We think God wants us to be
"humble" and he will bestow us his gifts.
(22:16):
This isn't how it works. Humility is the
Spiritual request of meekness, which is
what comes with the realization there is
only One Being. And it is I. This One
Life, Eternal, Perfect, everywhere always
is the I of my being. It is through
(22:39):
practice and the development of the
faculty that enables us to perceive this
is where we begin to realize the Truth.
And you can't do this from that personal
sense of self with the mortal mind. And
even these human qualities and
(23:00):
characteristics we aspire to, they must
graduate to Divine attributes.
We must know ourselves in the way that
we're created, which is Perfect, Whole,
complete. Things like gratitude. People
think if I am grateful for what God gives
(23:21):
me, I am doing the will of the Father.
This is not understanding yourself to be
the expression of an indestructible
Principle. All that the Father has is
Thine. I and the Father are one. These
qualities we aspire to, we try and
(23:42):
understand them from this personal sense
of self. It's like forgiveness. The idea
of excusing behavior. The sin here is
found in the ninth commandment. "Thou
shalt not bear false witness against thy
neighbor." What is false witness? Is to
acknowledge the mental-material concept
(24:05):
and think it's real. For us to be a
faithful witness, we must understand
right where the mental-material event
took place is the One Perfect Divine
Spirit of the Divine Principle. And
that's all there ever is.
(24:26):
Initially this is tough, but you have to
develop a Spiritual practice where you
develop the mental landscape that will
support the Divine idea. And then through
repetition comes absorption until
eventually the effortful work of
concentration becomes the effortless flow
(24:47):
state of meditation.
Where you're no longer trying, but you
are resting in the knowledge. The Divine
Principle is running a Perfect universe.
That's why Jesus tells you to turn the
other cheek to put up
your sword. Resist not evil.
(25:09):
Swami we do have a verse here. I'll read it
from John 12:25. I'd like to get your
thoughts on. "He that loves his life
shall lose it, and he that hates his life
in this world shall keep it unto life
eternal." End of the verse.
Yeah it becomes clear. Those who are
satisfied with the human experience will
(25:32):
pass away in time or as it is also said
in sin. Either way we are in the cycle of
death and rebirth which is the false
sense of life driven by
the belief in two powers.
We remain under karmic law until we are
willing to give up the belief in the
(25:53):
false sense of life.
Come out of the fear.
In fact, there are three modes of mortal
thought. We must master before we can
walk reason through the open door of
revelation. After we master the fear,
then we must die to the
(26:13):
personal sense of self. And finally,
slay the dragon of world mind, the
collective consciousness of mortal mind.
There it is, simple but far from easy.
And Swami we do have
another verse from John 16:7.
(26:36):
I'll read it. "Nevertheless I tell you
the truth, it is expedient for you that I
go away. For if I go not away, the
Comforter will not come unto you. But if
I depart, I will send him unto you." End
of the verse. What does this mean for us?
We can't have a temporary sense of life
(26:57):
and immortal life. And we can't be both.
So the false must go to receive the true.
The Comforter is the Holy Spirit, which
is the activity of the Christ bringing
the coincidence between
the human and the Divine.
(27:18):
Revealing the Perfection of the Divine
creation. Eternal Life is its own
protection. We remain under karmic law
until we are willing to give up the
belief in matter and mortality and be
born again in Spirit.
(27:40):
Health and matter must be
given up for health in Spirit.
This is a process which requires
initiation by conscious
effort to Know the Truth.
We must overcome the animal magnetism of
this personal sense of self.
(28:01):
And like we said, finally, we overcome
the fear. There's no fear when there is
no personal sense of self.
And then the process again graduates
where we have to slay the dragon.
(28:25):
So it's a threefold process. We go from
unconscious awareness to self-conscious
awareness to super-conscious awareness.
Or as Mary Baker Eddy laid out in Science
and Health, the scientific translation of
mortal mind. The three degrees.
Depravity, evil beliefs, disappearing,
(28:49):
and Spiritual understanding. It all comes
down to this caterpillar chrysalis
butterfly. Where I like the way she also
said, "Belief, faith, and understanding."
It's not something oftentimes that's
going to happen all at once, but it
certainly can if you are conscious of the
(29:12):
Divine creation. Otherwise, you're going
to have to build the stairway to heaven.
