In this episode of Walk & Talk, I’m diving into Matthew 5—one of the most powerful chapters in the Bible. From the Beatitudes to Jesus’ teachings on love, humility, and faith, I’ll be sharing what this chapter means to me and how it’s shaped my personal journey with Christianity. I’ll also open up about some of my own experiences—moments of doubt, growth, and the lessons that brought me closer to my faith.

"It wasn't because there was another man waiting for me, it was because HE was waiting for me."

Whether you’re deep in your faith or just curious, let’s talk about grace, purpose, and what it really means to walk in the love of God.

(00:00):
Hello everybody! Good morning, good afternoon, good night, whatever time it is I

(00:04):
hope you've had or had an amazing day. My name is Lorena and welcome back to
another episode of Walk and Talk. If you're new here, thank you for joining me.
If you're not, you know how this goes. Today I woke up and I opened my Bible
and I don't necessarily read the Bible in a traditional way. I kind of just go

(00:26):
where I feel like the Holy Spirit is taking me and read books based off what
I'm feeling in the moment. And in the last couple of days I was drawn towards
Matthew and this morning I started reading Matthew 5 and I really really

(00:47):
want to share my thoughts on this. So if you're religious, if you're Christian,
Catholic, believer of God, or if you're not and you're just curious, that's what
this episode is going to be about. If this is not for you, I have other episodes.

(01:08):
But I just found myself really really connecting with the verses in this
chapter and I really wanted to share. So I want to start by reading the title. So
it's called You're Blessed and I have the new version of the Bible. So it says,
When Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge crowds, he climbed a hillside. Those who

(01:32):
were apprentice to him, the committed, climbed with him, arriving at a quiet
place he sat down and taught his climbing companions that this is what he
said. And the first one says, You're blessed when you're at the end of your
rope. With less of you, there is more of God and his rule. When I read this the

(01:58):
first time I was so confused I thought to myself, okay what does that mean? End
of a rope. Why would there be less? You would think, you know, let's say
you're climbing a really long hiking hill and you're almost at the end of the
rope. But in my head I pictured, okay then that means I'm almost at the top.
But I think in this way, it kind of was referring to the times in your life

(02:24):
where you've really been at your lowest point. When you felt like you were at
the end of your rope, you had no more hope. You didn't want to do anything
anymore. You maybe had no friends. You maybe had no family. You had no more hope.
That is when God arrives and that is so true and we hear it and see it all the

(02:45):
time. Especially when people, you know, death beds, hospitals, like that is in my
opinion the biggest example when you're at the hospital. You're feeling sick. You
pray. You ask God, hey please heal me. You know, when we're at the end of our rope,
that's when we start asking. The problem is a lot of people ask, they receive and

(03:06):
then they don't thank. And that is something that I feel like I talk about
a lot and it upsets me because I think we should always start prayer by thanking
God first instead of just asking Him for something. People are really used to just
asking and asking and then God will give them what they need and sometimes even

(03:27):
more and then they just forget about Him. And so with this verse I was like, when
you're blessed, when you're at the end of your rope, when you truly are at your
lowest point, with less of you there is more of God and His rule. When you have
nothing left and you fear you're at your lowest, God will come into your life

(03:52):
because there isn't any left of you. You feel like you have no hope. Sometimes
maybe you don't even want to live anymore and that's okay because God can
come and save you. He comes and rescues you. He enters your life when there is
less of you and gives you more. He completes you in a sense. And I just

(04:14):
thought that verse was beautiful. The second says, you're blessed when you feel
you've lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the one
most dear to you. This one hit really close to home to me. I went through a
breakup recently and it sucked. You know, I truly did feel like I lost what was

(04:38):
most dear to me in the moment. I thought I was gonna marry this person. I had
plans. You know, the whole thing. I thought this was the one and I
want to give some context to this because I think it's a really, really cool
part of my journey with God in my testimony. So I was in the relationship

(05:03):
for just under a year and things had started to change during the
relationship throughout the last few months of it and I found things just
weren't working as we assumed. I talked with this person many times. We sat down
and just discussed like some things needed to change and I started going to

(05:27):
church a lot more as well throughout the end of the relationship. I found this
person was not religious at all and I think that's something for me to
consider a lot if I'm going forward relationships because that is something
that I needed a partner. And I was just sitting there thinking like I'm gonna go
to church and I would. I would go Sunday mornings while he would sleep in and play

(05:49):
his video games and do what he wanted and I would ask him, hey like you, you
should come to me. I will never force someone on religion but he gave me his
word and said he was open to it and just never did and so it upset me and I
continued to ask. I would pray for meals. I would pray day and night. He would join

(06:10):
in once in a while but just things weren't right in the relationship and
they weren't going well and I was waiting for this change to happen and it
just wasn't on both ends and I was like is this really like the right relationship
for me? Like what am I truly waiting for? And so we were at this party friend's

(06:37):
house and I remember just going into the washroom and I stared into the mirror
because I was already, I had been arguing all day and I looked into the mirror and
I said dear Lord if this man is for me when I walk out of here I wanted to tell
me I look beautiful you know tell me I look pretty just give me a very sweet

(07:01):
compliment maybe about me something because I had spent like an hour and a
half getting ready in this washroom to look my best and then I said and if this
person's not for me he's gonna make a necessary comment like he'll say I look
hot he'll say like my outfits like too much just something negative or more

(07:23):
sexual and so I was nervous and I walked out of the room and there were a couple
people sitting on the couch and everyone kind of looked over at me and I looked
over at my partner at the time and I was kind of like hey and he looks at me up
and down and he goes that's what you're wearing it's just like oh no it was in

(07:49):
such like a judgmental tone and he just commented on my outfit was like that's
like too short that's too much like what I was wearing and I just felt like there
was like like I just like stabbed in the heart and then I looked up and I said is
that all you have to say everyone in the room was quiet it was so awkward and he

(08:10):
goes well I guess you look hot and I just like looked up at the ceiling like
really God like exactly the words that I told you I didn't want him to say and he
said and then I remember there's a girl sitting on the couch and she looks over
at me and she goes I think you look beautiful and I just was like I would

(08:32):
cry like the fact that she knew and somehow she said it it's like she was
able to read the room and knew exactly what I was looking for without me saying
anything and so I walked out of there blah blah blah broke up with him went
to church the next morning and I just remember I was crying I did not sleep

(08:53):
that night I remember walking up to church in the morning I still got up and
the first thing that the pastor said as I walked in he said it's time to come
home sometimes we have to go through really hard times in our lives all
these hurdles to get closer to God sometimes we have to deal with pain in

(09:17):
order to gain something from it and I was just like God you're really really
testing and calling me here today and the rest is history that day I got home
I opened my Bible for the first time I had a Bible sitting in my room for years
not once had I read it I kept telling myself I would I would I would meanwhile

(09:41):
I was getting in these relationships and just ignoring God and all this time he
was calling for me and so I started reading I just remember just crying and
being on my knees and just it was such an interesting and like out-of-body
experience and it just really made me think of the quote that I said in the

(10:04):
verse in Matthew that said you're truly blessed when you feel you've lost what
is most dear to you because only then can you embrace the one that is most
dear to you I had to lose someone that I truly loved to understand that God was
wanting me to be with him he wasn't looking for me to get into another

(10:27):
relationship he didn't he wasn't asking me or I was asking myself like to get
with a new guy or a new girl or whatever he wanted my relationship to be with him
like the Lord was seeking me and wanted me only he wanted me to build that
relationship with him and all this time I had been ignoring that and gone to

(10:49):
different people instead and it just really really opened my eyes and I also
think it ties back to the first one where it's like when you're truly at the
end of your rope and you feel like you have no one that's when you get more of
God and so the next verse says you're blessed when you're content with just
who you are no more no less that's the moment you find yourself proud owners of

(11:14):
everything that can't be bought I see so many people showing off their luxuries
their cars their new bag their travels and you know you do you that's awesome
I'm glad I when I travel I do the same however I went for a fundraising walk

(11:37):
the other day to raise some money for the homeless and on the opening ceremony
they were talking about how there's people in Canada where I live that are
just struggling you know it was pouring rain there was a thunderstorm there was

(11:58):
probably around 50 people including myself so there wasn't much of a big
crowd because a lot of people didn't show up because it was too cold they're
raining and I just thought that was very hypocritical because that was the point
of the run to raise money for the people who have to sit in these kind of

(12:18):
weathers and conditions and have no food no blankets they're freezing cold they
have nothing well we're so blessed and so I did the run I was freezing cold I
got home just soaked in water and I sat down and looked at my room and just
really prayed and said thank you to God because the fact that I even have a roof

(12:43):
over my head was just more than enough I had food in my fridge I have a car where
I can go buy whatever I want I had a warm shower to come home to I had
blankets I have a heater I have electricity I have a phone all these
things I was like I am rich this for me is rich I don't need the fanciest car I

(13:06):
don't need the biggest house I don't need the millions of friends this is
rich and so like it says you're content and more blessed when you accept who you
are with nothing more nothing less that's the moment you will find yourself
proud owners of everything that can't be bought and it doesn't just come to

(13:30):
physical things and materialistic it comes to people as well I don't need
anything we need God God is who we need we don't need to seek out more expensive
we need to seek out more time to the Lord and this is a big one because I
was looking at my screen time yesterday I don't know if you have an iPhone you

(13:51):
get those weekly screen times and my phone was at six hours a day and I do a
lot of work on my phone but I was embarrassed I was like I can't I can't
believe like the first thing that crossed my mind was how many of those
hours could I actually have used to build my relationship with God how many
of those hours could I actually just had sat down instead and read the Bible or

(14:13):
talk to God and so that's my goal this weekend however I was so shocked to
think that God is really trying to call us and to understand though sometimes we
don't need more or less we can be content with just what we have and so the

(14:33):
next verse says you're blessed when you've worked up a good appetite for God
he's food and drink and the best meal you're ever you'll ever eat I'll say that
what I guess I stumbled you're blessed when you've worked up a good appetite
for God he's food and drink and the best meal you'll ever eat I went for a

(14:55):
dinner last night with a friend and we had really good Italian food and somehow
we were there for three hours just talking and I finished my meal and I
look at him and I say hey why is he still hungry he's like how are you hungry
like we ate so much food and I said I don't know so and we were talking and I

(15:20):
was like you like we did do grace before we ate I went to church that morning I
was so confused it's like what what happened and the first thing that
crossed my mind was I didn't read the Bible this morning I did not read the
Lord's Word and for some reason it made me think about how sometimes we could

(15:44):
have the best meal in front of us but if we're not thanking God or with the right
people we will never be full I know if I had had that exact same plate with
people from my church and I had prayed upon it and truly sat there and enjoyed
the meal and talked about the Lord I would have been so full I don't think I

(16:05):
would even finished my meal so for any of you out there let's not forget to
bless what we have the food upon our plates the roof over our heads the
clothes on our back it ties in with the last verse as well sometimes we don't
need no more no less to just be content with what we do have God wants us to be

(16:29):
hungry for him his time his word the next verse speaks it says you're blessed
when you care at the moment of being careful you find yourselves cared for
and for me this made me think about sometimes we just need to care for one
another sometimes we can't expect people to return certain favors for me who's an

(16:54):
empath I'm a very caring person for a while I care too much what people thought
and now I just think you know I just want to help whoever I can when you start
being careful as in you're caring for others you put others needs before you

(17:17):
at the time you find yourself being cared for because people will return
those favors at some point people will reach out to you and if they don't God
will God will care for you when you do good he brings you good back and I think
that is so true and it ties with the next verse that says you're blessed when

(17:40):
you get your inside world your mind and your heart put right then can you see
God in the outside world this is my favorite verse if I'm being honest from
the chapter because just think about it when you have your heart and mind in the
right place so the inside of you you can start to see God in the outside world a

(18:04):
lot of us are struggling with anxiety with depression mental illnesses
heartbreak struggle whatever it is we have so much going on in your mind and
if you're like me who overthinks every single thing at every second minute it's
hard it's hard sometimes to sit and read the Bible or to sit and try and pray and

(18:25):
think it doesn't always flow naturally to me especially this episode I'm
probably gonna forget how the things I talked about but it's fine here we are
and I'm telling you I don't know what it was but God called me to share this
with you guys because even though I've been reading for the last couple months

(18:46):
when I read these verses it just spoke to me that I've really needed to share
this with someone and so I started thinking okay your inside world your heart
and your mind I ask God every time to remove my anxieties to give me to bring
me peace to put ourselves right to understand that wherever you are with

(19:12):
religion especially with God that we want to embrace that relationship with
him if we really want to give that love and care like I said in the last verse
we want to be able to care for others and also for ourselves because we can't
care for ourselves and give ourselves the love that we need we can't give it
out to others our energy starts draining and so the minute we have our

(19:38):
insides right we can connect our heart mind and soul to the Lord you start
seeing him in the outside world because you start seeing signs from God and
everybody gets signs from God I will say that right now we all get signs however
a lot of us are very quick to ignore them or we don't realize that they're

(20:02):
there if you can aligned your heart mind and soul to be open to God signs you
will start seeing them and I because and it can be such little things such as the
sunset I love sunsets I think they're beautiful because they're never the same
every day you will never see the same sunset and so whenever I go I walk over

(20:23):
I see it as a sign from God I say thank you I am so blessed that I'm able to see
this and it kind of feels in a way like personal is like this is for me or if
you ask God for a sign sometimes he will show it to you I know there's a lot of
people out there who ask God for specific things like send me a blue car

(20:44):
or send me a bird and I'm telling you if you really have your heart mind and soul
open to it and in the right space for God you will start seeing that the same
way that you start seeing the same car all the time and once you notice it you
can't stop noticing it the same thing will happen to you if you open your

(21:05):
heart to the signs that God is trying to give you in the outside world now the
next verse says you're blessed when you can show people how to cooperate instead
of computer fight that's when you discover who you really are and your
place in God's family I have never understood why in our world everyone's

(21:34):
so competitive maybe not everyone but it is especially in work fields there's
always competition it's always who's gonna get the promotion who's doing
better who's doing worse you start comparing your life with others you
start thinking oh they have more friends than me they got to go out they are in

(21:58):
the perfect relationship why are they traveling him I'm not why did they get
promoted and I didn't why do they have a nicer car than me you just start
comparing and competing with people instead of just learning to cooperate why
not instead take a second and be happy for people like that's so cool that

(22:18):
you're able to get that how did you do it you know let's cooperate together
let's work together let's find out how we can do it too the same way that we
share our word of God with people at church every morning they're cooperating
with us so how they are helping us in our journey so why not help each other
help one another this ties back to being blessed and being content with who we

(22:45):
are and what we have rather than fighting or competing with other people
it allows us to feel in a place and God's family that is complete and the
last verse says you're blessed when your commitment to God provokes persecution

(23:08):
the persecution drives you even deeper into God's kingdom if you are really
serious about getting close with God you need to make the time and effort for it
just like any relationship and they're talking about this at my church
yesterday how we make time for what we want right maybe we don't want to go to

(23:33):
work but we go because we're getting paid for it if you're in a relationship you
plan those dates you make time to see them if you have your family you make
the time to go see them if you want to get healthy you make the time to go to
the gym we make these choices everybody has a choice in what they do with their

(23:55):
time someone doesn't have time for you that's also their choice don't take it
personal but if you're committed enough to the Lord to provoke persecution and
actually drive you closer to him and take the time to read the Bible watch

(24:19):
the chosen learn a little more about who he is and what he's done for us in this
world your life is gonna change and you will become closer and to God's kingdom
you will meet the right people your path will start aligning the way that you
wanted things will start working out the way you've manifested and I understand

(24:41):
that there's a lot of different types of beliefs in the world a lot of different
versions of God as well so whatever you do believe in make sure that you're
making the time and effort for it this is a big part of our life that is not
gonna go away the same way I said earlier my relationship that I've noticed

(25:02):
wasn't with all these men that I've been with it was with God who was calling me
for it and so like it says on the title of this chapter you're blessed you are
so blessed to be here you are so blessed to be walking right now to be seeing to

(25:24):
be eating for the jobs that you have for the family for the friends for the bed
you get to get in every single night for the phone that you're using or
listening to this from I am so blessed that I'm even able to share this with you
guys and so I really want to end this episode saying and reminding you guys

(25:49):
how blessed we are to be where we are and if things aren't working out the way
that we expect them to and want them to make sure you're making the time and
effort to pray because things will happen when we at least expect them when
you start clearing like it said your mind and soul and your heart making sure
that your insides are right you will start seeing changes that God is making

(26:10):
on the outside world so I wish everyone the best time God bless you leave me a
review if you get a chance and I will see you guys well I guess not see I will
talk to you guys on the next episode God bless you
