Loren Johnson (00:18):
Welcome to another podcast show of War of
the Mind.
I'm your host, lauren Johnson.
Today we're going to talk aboutsocial violence, anti-bullying
and bullying the workplace.
Now, school violence,anti-bullying and bullying in
the workplace are all seriousissues that can be devastating

(00:41):
impact to victims, which allderive around trauma.
In this episode we'll explorethe different types of bullying,
what you do if you are beingbullied and how to create a more
bully-free environment.
Now school violence has reallybeen on the news a lot.

(01:05):
Who wants to see schoolviolence?
None of us want to see our kidsget harmed at church, at school
, even church.
The extent of bullying that istaking place these days is just
outrageous, and it's where it'seven crept out into the

(01:29):
workplace.
For us adults, I think it'sjust kind of the day in age
where we live in, where peoplethink they can get away with it
and it's okay and it's not.
Especially with this monthbeing Mental Health Awareness

(01:50):
Month, I firmly believe thisshould be an issue that we raise
a lot more, because how many ofus have been bullied in a
workplace?
I know I have, when I wasworking at my last place, just

(02:13):
because I didn't fit in or mybackground didn't fit in.
What was there then?
All of a sudden, I kind of feltlike I got pushed out.
I could have chose to stay, butwhy should I sit there and have
to put myself through it when Iwant to be somewhere where I

(02:39):
want to enjoy my job, enjoy thestuff I do for fun and enjoy my
job?
I don't want to have a job thatI dread going to work and to be
bullied every day by somebodywho can't see past their own

(02:59):
imperfections and feel the needto bring somebody else down.
And I'm not going to go outthere and name people.
They know who they are.
That's not what the show isabout.
The show is about raisingawareness, helping our young
people and us adults.

(03:29):
You know, school violence isthat type of violence that
occurs in the school setting.
This can include physicalassault, sexual assault, verbal
abuse and bullying.
School violence can be adevastating impact on victims,
their families and the entireschool community.
Now, anti-bullyinganti-bullying is an effort to

(03:56):
prevent or stop bullying.
Anti-bullying programs can beimplemented in schools and to
this day, they still are beingimplemented.
I don't feel like we're wherewe need to be.
I feel like we have a lot ofwork left to do, and the reason

(04:16):
being is you're seeing itoverflow into the workplace of
adults now.
So that's just this day and agewhere we made it okay for our
kids to do it.
Now also, our kids are growingup and they're seeing it that
it's okay to do and it's not Now.

(04:41):
Hindsight to that is where doyou think these kids are
learning from?
When you go into a job andyou're sitting there having
people spread rumors about youjust to get you try to get
kicked out, that falls underbullying.

(05:04):
You know, I'm not sure whypeople do that when you're not
there to affect their business.
You're there to promote yoursand do the best you can do for
yourself and for people.
To stoop to that level I have areal issue with.

(05:27):
And bullying in the workplaceis any type of repeated,
unwanted, harmful behaviortowards a coworker or
subordinate.
Bullying in the workplace cantake many forms, including
verbal abuse, such as insults, put downs, threats.

(05:47):
Physical abuse, such as hitting, shoving, blocking someone's
way.
Social isolation, such asexcluding someone from meetings,
social events.
Work sabotage, such as grievingsomeone, impossible deadlines
and setting them up for failure.

(06:08):
Now, where I was working, Iworked for myself, but I rented
an office space at a art studiowhere everybody had their own
niche and if you didn't fit in,my impression was they're going

(06:33):
to run you out.
And that's kind of what it gotto the point of and I wasn't
going to have any part of it andI, yeah, still looking for a
new studio.
It's just sad that people takeit to that limit, you know,

(06:56):
especially coming from mybackground.
I don't know if any of you wantto check out our website,
ljvoiceprojectcom.
You'll see a little bit aboutmyself on there and some of the
stuff I've been through.
And you know, to have somebodycall out and say you're nobody

(07:19):
in good amount to know, butnothing in this world, so why
bother?
Really really was something I,when I put this out there.
I wasn't putting it out thereto claim fame to be the best

(07:42):
podcast artist.
I'm just trying to share myexpertise and my wisdom that
I've been through and theresilience that I've built over
the years to overcome all theselife obstacles.

(08:03):
And I'm not anywhere nearbragging.
I have more problems than most,because I'm sure there's
somebody out there who has moreand I'm just here to raise
awareness, explain my side ofstuff that's happened to me and

(08:29):
what's kept me gone, you know, and if I can help somebody, then
I did my part and I firmly donot believe in this bullying BS.
That's one thing I would do notstand for and advocate for.
Bullying in the workplace canhave, you know, a devastating

(08:52):
impact on victims that can leadto stress, anxiety, depression
and even suicidal thoughts.
It can also damage a person'sself-esteem, confidence and make
it difficult for a person to dotheir job.
You know, and I got to thepoint when I was there like I

(09:15):
didn't even want to recordbecause they were banning stuff
on the walls.
They were, you know, hittingbroom handles on the floor just
to mess with my recording and towhere my contract.
I could be there 24-7, but yetthen all of a sudden next thing,

(09:38):
I know I can't be there 24-7because one of the ladies said I
was sleeping there when Iwasn't.
I was going there at night so Icould record, since that was
the only quiet time.
Well, that turned into themhaving somebody stay there for

(09:59):
security because they wereafraid I would break into other
people's units and I just feltlike if I gave them a reason to,
that'd be one thing, but when Ikept to myself and busted my
butt to work on my stuff andkeep to myself.

(10:21):
That's where I took it personaland the biggest downfall, you
know, the biggest thing Ilearned from this is you know I
wasn't ready for that part ofsocial media putting it out

(10:42):
there and getting that littlebit of backlash or the negative
comments.
And you know that's justsomething that comes with the
territory and it's something Igot to get past.
And if I've gotten past some ofthe seller stuff, there's no

(11:04):
reason why I can't get past this.
What do you do if you're bullied?
If you're bullied, there are afew tips you can do.
Talk to the bully directly.
If you feel safe doing so.
You can talk to the bully andexplain how their behavior is

(11:25):
affecting you.
Report the bullying to yoursupervisor or HR director.
If this is at a workplace, youremployer has legal obligations
to protect you from bullying.
Now, I don't know how thisworks.
This could be different than mysituation was, where I was

(11:45):
renting an office space andthere was probably, you know,
another 20 businesses in there.
So it's not like you know.
That's.
The other thing is then theoffice space tried changing my
contract of when I could bethere, my hours of work, even

(12:07):
though they weren't my boss, soI don't know.
If any of you got any tips onthat and want to feel free to
write us.
I'd love to hear from you Nowhow to create more bully free

(12:29):
environments.
There are a number of thingsthat can be done to create a
more bully free environment.
These include, you know, havingan anti-bullying policy.
Training employees on whatbullying is and how to prevent

(12:49):
it.
Taking bullying a complimentcomplaints seriously and
investigating them properly.
Creating a culture of respectand inclusion.
Now I know we covered a littlebit a little fast here, but I

(13:17):
just want to pump one of theseepisodes out to you.

fellow hunter, and then we'realso gonna venture out to what

(14:23):
we call the legacy sportsunlimited, and that we're gonna
run season one during the NFLfootball season and World Series
just updating sports andanything from Monday morning
quarterback to sports injuries,so you can get your best team on

(14:47):
the field for your fantasyfootball league.
So, yeah, so additional tipsbowling, like you said, be a
good role model.
Children adults learn bywatching the people around them.

(15:10):
others, teach bullying.

Help children to understandthat bullying is not how to
identify it.
Teach them how to stand up tobullies, how to be, how to
report bullying to a trustedadult.

(16:35):

coping skill and you know wehave.
I've done a lot of art projectsand if I can give you any ideas
