There are 590 quake-prone buildings in the city.
The deadlines for strengthening them spike in 2027 when 228 notices will expire.
Wellington City Council is in the dark about the future of hundreds of these buildings, despite the expectation the capital will have a significant earthquake in our lifetime.

Asked how he sleeps at night knowing people are living in yellow-sticker apartments Rush said "we all live with risk"
"If a big earthquake happens people will die. We are sitting on a time bomb," he said.
