(00:00):
I'm Kristen Russell, and this isThe Wholly Empowered Podcast,
where we dive into all thingsholistic healing and open our
minds, hearts, and paradigms tonew ideas so we can live our
most empowered, healthy, joyfullives.
So this is episode one of WhollyEmpowered I am your host,
(00:22):
Kristen Russell, and I'm reallyexcited to be here.
I have been wanting to do thisfor a very long time, probably
at least five years.
And it finally, the timing isfeeling right and it just feels
like I have a green light to go.
So I'm just gonna, we're justdoing this.
I'm a massage therapist.
I've been doing that for aboutnine years.
And I also, I lead meditationshere and there.
(00:43):
I have a meditation teachingcertification and do, do a
little bit of that, incorporatethat in as needed into my work
and also do some othermodalities.
So we'll talk more about that.
But I, in this episode, I justwant to talk about my intention
with this podcast, why I'm here, what I'm doing, what I'm hoping
(01:04):
to achieve.
to provide.
So yeah, I'd say I'm a, I'm aholistic healing enthusiast.
So that's, That's, it'ssomething I'm passionate about,
so I'm excited to share with youthings that have worked for me
(01:24):
in my healing journey andprovide a space where other
people can come on and shareeither their expertise or things
that have worked for them.
So that's kind of, so myintention with this podcast is
to.
Create a space where we canlearn, learn and heal and learn
new things.
(01:45):
I there's so much out there andthere's so many options and
there's so many reasons to feelempowered about your health and
wellness.
And I really just, I've likereally want to share that with
people.
So I have gotten so many answersthat seem really like not what
you would expect that haveworked, that have been the right
thing for me.
And I'm, I'm my lens in thispodcast.
(02:08):
I'm Christian.
I'm religious.
I pray to God.
I've gotten a lot of answersfrom my source.
I feel like that that have justbeen really unorthodox or really
different or what just, youknow, just not your mainstream.
And it's, it's been such a gamechanger, such a life changer for
(02:28):
me, if that's a phrase and Ijust want to empower people to
look outside the box and trusttheir intuition and trust their,
their source, trust their God,or, you know, whoever their
higher power is and just be ableto look at things with, from a
different point of view.
So I'm hoping that it's a spacewhere people can come and learn
(02:50):
and we'll have lots of differentpeople on lots of different
subjects that are maybe thingsyou haven't heard of or thought
of.
And It might be kind of out ofyour comfort zone or something,
but I'm excited to just have funand play in this space.
So I'm hoping we can all come inwith open minds and drop our,
our paradigms or ideologies orwhatever, you know, and just
(03:11):
allow space for new ideas.
And so I'm, I'm hoping you cantake what resonates and leave
what doesn't and just be reallyopen minded.
So.
I'm planning on having peoplewho are either experts or have
personal experience withdifferent healing modalities.
I'll share a little bit about myexperiences and what's worked
(03:32):
for me.
There may be a few podcastswhere it's just me talking, but
overall, I kind of want to havejust interesting people on who
have cool experiences or coolexpertise that is just really
helpful.
This is a passion project forme.
I just, I want to provide valuefor people and just share, have
(03:52):
a space of like really safesharing.
So that's, that's my intentionwith this.
And if that sounds good, keeplistening, keep joining.
But I want to share a little bitabout, well, first of all, I
want disclaimer, like I'm, Idon't really consider myself an
(04:13):
expert.
I'm just kind of an enthusiastand I'm just sharing what I am
passionate about.
The things you hear on here,it's not medical advice.
It's just ideas.
And it's just, you know, if itworks for you, wonderful.
If it doesn't, that's great.
So just putting that out there.
But yeah, I want to talk alittle bit about my story, like
(04:36):
why, why I'm doing this and why,you know, why I'm passionate
about holistic healing and whatholistic healing is.
So.
When we talk about just holistichealing, we're, we're coming
from this frame of thinkingwhere it's like the, the body,
(04:58):
soul, spirit, mind are allinterconnected, and they're all
affecting each other, and we'rewhole beings, like, it's kind of
taking into account our Divinityand our physical and our, you
know, mental, emotional sidesand bring them all together.
So we may, we're going to betalking about anything from, you
(05:20):
know, nutrition to cognitivetherapy and spiritual healing to
massage and, you know, just allkinds of things.
And we might be looking at howone affects the other in one
episode, or we might just befocused on one thing, but we're
kind of coming from this, ideathat like, it's, it really is
(05:42):
all connected.
It's all in intrinsically justthey're all affecting each
other.
And I really believe that's howour bodies work and how our, you
know, minds and all that makesus, us works in synchronicity
and all works together.
So you have to address eachthing.
(06:04):
If you really want.
complete healing.
So, and I'm, I'm also hopingthat we can learn to trust our
intuition and just get to knowourselves better and know our
bodies better and our existencebetter.
So that's where we're, that'swhere we're at.
But yeah, so that's holistic.
That's kind of the holistic,Approach to things.
(06:28):
And so that's kind of our, ourframe of reference for this
whole podcast.
But so who am I, what, what am Idoing here?
So yeah, as I said, I've been amassage therapist for about nine
years.
And I've really enjoyed thatcareer.
It's been a great fit for me.
And has allowed me to grow in alot of ways in, especially in
(06:49):
this.
Like, the more holistic sphere.
So, I, I grew up in a familythat was really conservative,
Christian my mom was really intoalternative healing and so I
kinda grew up with this, justvery, like, it's very normal for
me, all of this stuff, all this, like, alternative healing.
(07:11):
modalities and ideas and ways ofthinking.
We used to go to a chiropractorwhen I was young who did like,
he did NET, which is neuroemotional technique and it's a
pretty widely accepted, you knowform of healing and it's
basically like an emotionalrelease Looking at what you're
(07:34):
holding on to in your body andhelping you release that and
giving you the right supplementsand diet and just different
things to help you move forward.
And so we, we would go to himoften when I was younger and
that was, that was somethingthat I was just very used to.
And my mom, so When she, when Iwas probably 12, she was
(07:58):
diagnosed with cancer.
And she did all the, all theholistic, you know, alternative
modalities.
And she, she never did chemo.
Like a little bit of radiationBut she just did a lot of
different, a lot of differentthings.
And She was very into, like, Lawof Attraction and, you know, all
(08:21):
of that.
Just mindset.
She had the best attitude ofanybody I've ever met.
And I think that played a hugerole in her, how she handled
that health issue.
So she had, she had that forabout 14 years and, did all the
(08:45):
different things.
At one point she went to Mexicoand did some treatments there.
It's just some more justtreatments that weren't
available in the U.
S.
And that, the other treatmentsshe did were, they were helpful,
but I, you have to really hit ithard when it comes to cancer, in
my opinion.
And so I think it helped herlive, her quality of life was
really good for a long time.
(09:06):
And I, I would forget she waseven sick, you know.
But when she went to Mexico, shewas not doing well and she was
only there for a short amount oftime and she just turned around
completely like she's doing somuch better.
So I think some treatments weremore effective than others, but
overall, like that was really, Ifeel like she, she did what
(09:30):
worked for her, which you haveto do when you have any kind of
anything with your body, youhave to do what works for you.
But I felt like that was reallyeffective for her.
And so I just saw, I saw theeffects of that and I'd love to,
we'll, we'll dive into that inanother episode.
I kind of want to just give youan overview, but I just, I saw
(09:51):
how much that helped her.
And so that really informed howI look at health, So anyway, she
She passed away in 2015, whichis when I started doing massage
later that year.
But anyway, she just, she justlived a long time with that and
did, did really well, honestly.
(10:12):
So I, I got to witness, youknow, how her mindset helped her
and how these differenttreatments were more or less
effective.
So it really just, it, it, kindof forms how you view health and
wellness when you go throughsomething like that with someone
so close to you.
And then when I was younger formy own personal, experience with
(10:41):
holistic healing.
So we moved, we moved toCalifornia when I was 13, 14.
And that was a really tough movefor me.
I, you know, when you movesomewhere and the people are
just kind of established andthey don't really need you.
So then you just, it's reallyhard to make friends.
And it was rough.
(11:02):
And I was going to public schoolat this new school and it was
really difficult.
And, We had gone back to visitour old chiropractor and he did
some, some work on me and we, wewere leaving out of town right
as we were finishing thatsession.
(11:23):
And when you do a session likethat, you have to, there needs
to be a feeling of completeness.
There needs to be like, okay, wefinished whatever we opened up.
We finished processing.
And I didn't finish processing.
And I didn't know at the time.
I didn't really realize what wasgoing on.
I just, you know, I felt weird.
(11:44):
And and this isn't I feel likethis might give that a bad rep,
but but it's just, it's just thefacts, like it's just part of,
as an adult now, I would know,oh we need to go, I don't, I
don't feel quite right, like weneed to finish, like we left
something undone, but at thetime I just didn't know, I
didn't know, and so it kind oftriggered this anxiety in me,
(12:06):
where I, for, gosh, it was likemy sophomore year of high
school.
And I just started feelingreally anxious and I think there
are other factors involved, butthis was kind of the catalyst or
the trigger that just seteverything off, but I really
struggled with anxiety.
Like, if I had gone to apsychiatrist, they probably
(12:30):
would have diagnosed me with ananxiety disorder, probably like
probably agoraphobia orsomething, because I just, when
I would go to school, I feltlike I was struggling to just
stay.
In the present or just stay inmy body.
Like it felt like a very out ofbody experience and it was so, I
was in fight or flight like ahundred percent of the time,
(12:50):
basically like every day, it wasjust a struggle to stay calm and
not have a panic attack kind of,and not feel like I was going to
pass out or something like itwas just really, really
difficult.
And We ended up, I didn't reallyknow how to communicate this to
my mom because she had always, she'd never really struggled
(13:11):
with her mental health.
And she was wonderful, but shedidn't really have a frame of
reference.
And it was, I mean, it was, youknow, 2004 or something.
Like, it just wasn't as, peopledidn't talk about things as
openly as they do right now.
And I didn't know what washappening and I was afraid if I
talked about it, it would makeit worse.
(13:31):
So I just didn't really Get aton of help.
I would tell her what was kindof going on But it was hard to
explain and it was hard for herto understand.
And so anyway, we just did ourbest but we found another
chiropractor in California wherewe had moved who did the same
treatments And so I worked withher and she really helped to get
me back to homeostasisEspecially as I was like a
(13:54):
senior I did a lot of work withher because I was going to
college and I was like, I can'tgo to college like this.
So so we just did, we did a lotof healing work with her and
that helped me a ton.
I was always really interestedin this and what they did.
And I always thought, gosh, I'dlove to do what these, What
these practitioners do just allthis emotional healing work.
(14:15):
And at the time, that was theonly modality I knew of where
anyone did that.
And that was something you hadto have a doctorate to do.
So I wasn't quite thatmotivated, you know, to like
pursue a doctorate just to dothat.
But as time went on.
Jumping back to when my mompassed.
(14:40):
So at the time there was thisgirl at church that got assigned
to me.
I just kind of helped me out.
And.
She had left me a message whenmy mom was in the hospital, kind
of going through therollercoaster ups and downs of
her passing.
And she'd left me a message justsaying hello and introducing
herself.
And if you need anything, and Idon't even think she knew what
(15:00):
was going on with me, but Iended up calling her when I got
home and connecting with her andletting her know what was going
on.
And she told me and this waswhen I was 26, So it's, you
know, quite a while aftercollege and I was doing much
better with my, I feel like Iover the years I've basically,
(15:21):
I've done a lot of healing workwith the anxiety where I'm like,
it's not really such an issue.
But that's another, you know, there's been a lot of things
that I've utilized and so I'mexcited to kind of give you
more.
About just what's worked for mein that area and just learning
things about myself and how tomanage I have all these tools
now, you know where it's notit's just not a big deal if I do
(15:43):
get anxious Anyway, so I'mtalking to to this girl and she
was like, you know, I have a Iknow a lady who does Kind of
emotional release work thatmight be helpful for you, and
she connected me with this womanand I didn't even I didn't even
use her services for two yearsbecause I was in massage school
(16:08):
And I was just getting by youknow it's like you're just Doing
the bare minimum of everythingbecause you're trying to get
through all your do all yourthings you have to do So but
about two years later.
I realized that I was You I waslike, man, I can't get out of
bed in the morning.
Like, it's just all the grieffrom losing my mom and feeling
(16:29):
so alone and feeling, you know, like I didn't have a purpose
anymore.
I helped her a lot and it'sreally hard when you lose
someone like that for so manyreasons.
But that was, that was a big onefor me as well as just losing
your mom.
But, I finally called her and wedid a session and it was really
similar to what I did with achiropractor as far as we're
(16:54):
releasing trapped emotions inthe body and but it was a very,
it was done through a Christiancentered lens and it was the
most healing thing I've everexperienced because we were, the
way we were doing it was veryintentional and about calling,
(17:16):
calling on Christ and usingvisualizations and just using
the atonement really to help meheal.
And that was like the mosttransformative thing.
Uh, And it, it changed me, youknow, it was like, and it wasn't
the modality, it's the source.
It's.
(17:37):
For me, it's Christ, you know, for me, it's the savior.
Um, And you know, when you, andI'm not, I'm not here to
evangelize or preach anything, but I'm just sharing my
authentic, you know, experience, what I, what worked for me, as I
was saying before, like, that'skind of what I'm here to do and
(17:58):
for other people, like I knowother people where other things
have worked great for them.
And so definitely.
We're going to talk about all ofthat, but this is, you know,
just my story.
So but yeah, when you, when youexperience healing like that,
you just want to, you do want toshare it.
And so that's a big motivatorfor me being here.
(18:19):
I just want to share themiracles I've experienced, you
know, with my health and soanyway, so I, I was very
interested in what this, youknow, what she was doing and
the, the modality she used andand she, one time I worked with
her for quite a, quite a while.
(18:39):
I went to her for sessions forquite a while and she, one time
she was like, would you everwant to do this?
And I was like, And I was like, well, I'm not, I'm not gifted.
It feels like this woman's veryspiritually gifted, you know?
And I was like, well, I can't dothat.
And she was like, I think you'dbe really good at it.
I was like, oh, really?
So I started looking into it andI started learning how to do it.
(19:00):
And she was a mentor for me andand so I, I learned about this
healing modality.
And it's something that Iincorporate here and there.
If my.
You know, I do it with friendsor I do it a little bit with my
massage clients if they wantthat but it's informed how I How
I do things just in general andit's been a huge blessing in my
(19:21):
life.
So anyway So yeah, so that'sit's kind of Trying to think if
there's anything else that Iwanted to share about why I'm
here.
I'm trying to give you anoverview a little bit.
I went in depth on some personalthings, but overall, like I, I
want to, as far as modalitiesgo, I want to dive in deeper on
different episodes, but I wantedto give you a overall just view
(19:44):
of who I am and what I'm wantingto offer and what I'm wanting to
kind of the space I want tocreate and the vibe, you know?
So So yeah, that's kind of whereI'm at now, and I feel like
I've, it's opened up a wholeworld of inner work for me, and
knowing how to help myself heal.
(20:06):
And so anyway, that's, that'sme, and I think, yeah, I'm
hoping we can help each other, you know, help each other heal.
So thank you for listening toepisode one.
And this is a little bitshorter, but we'll probably,
we'll probably go a littlelonger, maybe closer to an hour.
(20:27):
I'm not really sure.
I'm trying to just not set toomany parameters and let it be
what it is.
And we'll just see what happens.
So.
Should be fun.
Thank you so much for listening.
