Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hello and welcome to when Over Depression.
I am your host, tamara Trotter, and today we'll be talking
about 10 reasons to slow down.
You know, we really need torecognize that we're not getting

(00:31):
any younger and we need to beaware of our surroundings.
We need to slow down.
These are my 10 reasons to slowdown.
Number one slow down before yougo down, and what I mean by
that is you cannot be on aconstant upswing and expect to

(00:58):
be healthy and able to carry outthe task that you must
accomplish day after day.
You have to get your rest, youhave to eat healthy, and if
you're not doing those things,it will not be long before you

(01:19):
go down.
Number two tomorrow iscertainly not promised to any
one of us.
We need to slow down, watchwhat we're doing and take time
to smell the flowers, becausetime is moving so fast, so fast.

(01:51):
Kids are growing up faster thanever and we need to just take a
pause and just relax.
Number three when we move toofast, we make costly mistakes.
So if we need to get up earlierso that we're not rushing in
the morning, we need to do that, because when we move too fast

(02:11):
and mistakes happen, we have noidea how much it will cost us or
someone else.
Number four when we move toofast, we drop our guard and
accidents are more likely tohappen.
We drop our guard because weare constantly thinking about

(02:36):
something else in our mind andwe are not focusing on what's in
front of us and what we arecurrently doing.
Contrary to popular belief, wereally cannot multitask as much
as we think we can.
You can only really concentrateon one thing at a time, that is

(03:01):
, if you are operating inexcellence and giving it your
all and your best.
You cannot be focused on twothings at a time.
Number five when we move toofast, we lose strategic thinking

(03:23):
ability.
It's just like being impaired.
When we're driving a car, yourreflexes are not the same to
respond as quickly because wehave compromised our strategic

(03:44):
thinking ability.
We have got to slow down beforesomething catastrophic happens
in our life to cause us so muchpain and suffering.
And I'm speaking to myselfbecause I know that I need to

(04:06):
slow down, and that is why Ihave selected this topic for
this episode.
Number six we need to slow downand think things through.
We should never be makingdecisions when we're upset, when
we're not feeling well, whenour mind is not really capable

(04:32):
of dealing with whatever isbefore you is before you.
Yes, we compartmentalize, butat the same time, when we do
that, we have to make sure thatwe are thinking things through.

(04:55):
So sometimes you need to justsleep on it or pray on it and
don't make the decision untilclearer thinking prevails.
Do not make a large purchase ora major decision when you're
tired and you haven't weighedall of the pros and cons.
Make a list that represents thepros to you following through

(05:22):
with this decision, and thenmake a list about the cons and
make a well-informed decision, one that is based on emotions,
because, remember, 75% of thedecisions that we make are based

(05:46):
on emotion and only 25% arebased on rational thought.
So we need to make sure thatwe're making decisions when we
are thinking rationally, thatwe're making decisions when we
are thinking rationally.
Bounce the decision off of agood friend to see whether it

(06:08):
makes sense to them and beprepared to change the decision
if a friend who knows you verywell is saying I don't think
it's in your best interest.
It's in your best interest.
Number seven we need to slowdown, because there is
absolutely nothing worth rushingfor, because, again, when we

(06:30):
rush, we cannot continue to seethe prize.
We have got to be able to keepour eyes on the prize and we
won't be able to do that if weare rushing.
That's when costly mistakeshappen, that's when accidents

(06:55):
happen and that's when we arecompletely thrown off kilter.
Number eight we need to slowdown because we are precious
cargo.
You're precious, your kids areprecious, your loved ones are
precious, and we never want tobe in a situation where we

(07:21):
jeopardize ourselves.
We have got to slow down people.
We have got to slow down.
When we move too fast, it causesanxiety, and when we have
anxiety, we know that we're notat our best decision-making

(07:44):
capability.
So if you know that you sufferfrom anxiety and depression, it
is incumbent upon you to relieveyour anxiety by trying to plan
ahead.
Now, I know when you sufferwith depression that's difficult
, because sometimes you wake up,you don't feel like it.

(08:08):
You just kind of move aboutslowly.
Nothing seems to really be tooimportant, and then by the time
you need to be somewhere orstart a task or whatever it is,
you tend to run out of time, andthat's what happens when you
suffer with a mental illness.

(08:29):
But do your best and doyourself a favor by helping
decrease your own anxiety byslowing down.
Number 10, when we move too fast, then we are not able to be

(08:53):
efficient.
We need to slow down becausefast is not necessarily
efficient.
Not necessarily efficientBecause you're going to make
mistakes, you're going tooverlook important details
because we're moving too fast, and I cannot stress this enough.

(09:17):
I know that you have friendsand family in your life that
need to hear this episode aboutslowing down, especially number
one slow down before you go downMentally, physically,
financially, spiritually slowdown and for your homework.

(09:42):

(10:59):

they lost their daughter tosuicide.

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
