Speaker 1 (00:10):
Hello and welcome.
To Win Over Depression, thepodcast where your pain has a
voice and your healing has ahome.
I'm your host, tamara Trotter, and I've been where you are
tired, broken and wondering ifjoy is ever coming back.
But let me tell you this youare not your depression, you are

(00:32):
not your darkest day, and hereyou will find real talk, real
tools and real hope.
Each week we'll explore how torise.
We'll explore how to rise onebreath, one step, one win at a
time.
So let's heal, let's rise.
Let us win over depressiontogether.

(00:53):
This podcast isn't aboutpretending everything is fine.
It's about telling the truthyour truth, my truth and
learning how to carry the weightwithout letting it crush you.
Here we shine a light on thehard stuff grief, anxiety,
hopelessness and remind eachother that healing is messy but

(01:14):
possible, whether you're in themidst of a storm or just trying
to make it through the day.
This space was created just foryou.
You're seen, you're valued andyou don't have to fight alone.
Today we'll be talking aboutwhat do we do when we are close
to giving up.
It seems as though once we havemanaged to solve one problem or

(01:38):
issue, another problem raisesits head.
We have to remember to take onestep at a time and figure out
what is our role in solving thisproblem.
When everything feels heavy, when even breathing feels like
work, it's something so manypeople quietly carry.

(02:01):
You're not alone in that spacequietly carry.
You're not alone in that space.
When we're depressed andmiserable, the idea of keeping
going can feel impossible.
But here's the truth.
You don't have to climb thewhole mountain today, just one
small step and then the other.

(02:22):
The tiniest actions matterGetting out of bed, drinking
water, taking a shower, getting15 minutes of sunlight, texting
someone who cares.
So even when you feel likeyou're not making progress, look
back on what you have done andrealize that you are getting

(02:47):
better and that you are buildingmomentum.
It's so important that we put aname to how we're feeling.
Say it loud or write it downI'm hurting, I feel hopeless,
I'm exhausted.
Naming it takes some of itspower away, because when we name

(03:08):
it and we own it, we know thatour next step is to get through
it.
Instead of looking at the wholeday or week, ask yourself what
is the next kind thing that Ican do for myself?
That could be brushing yourteeth, wrapping yourself in a

(03:29):
blanket or turning on a songthat lifts you even a little.
Remember it's okay to rest.
Rest isn't quitting.
It's a sacred pause.

(03:50):
Sometimes the most courageousthing you can do is to stop and
breathe.
Sometimes we have to borrowhope.
When we can't find our own hope, borrow someone else's
no-transcript.
Let someone else hold up hopefor you until you can hold it

(04:11):
for yourself again.
You are not your depression.
You are not your misery.
You are a whole worthy 100% ofyour worst day so far.
That's not nothing.
That's power, that's resilience.
That's not nothing.
That's power, that's resilience.
And even though it doesn't feellike it, you are doing better

(04:43):
than you think.
Hang in there.
Sometimes we have to cry, andcrying isn't a weakness, it is a
natural release.
Sometimes your soul needs toleak a little to make room for
light.
So if you need a good cry, itis a cathartic moment, so take
advantage of it and you will befeeling better after you've done
that.

(05:03):
It has been difficult for methis last month.
I've had some personaladjustments and I've seen many
dark days and I have wanted togive up, and that's why I
selected this topic for mypodcast episode.
But you know, I have to lookback and remember all of the

(05:24):
tools and techniques that I'veshared with you.
I need to have those manifestin my own life and I have to
remember that I too suffer fromdepression and I too take
medication and have to work hardto keep my depression at bay.

(05:45):
One of the most importantthings that I've learned in the
last month is how very importantit is to practice self-care.
No one can be with you 24 hoursper day, so we have to be in
charge of ourselves and incharge of managing our mental

(06:06):
health condition.
So what can you do to manageyour feelings?
First, we have to recognize thatmanaging our mental health is a
daily journey and there's noshame in needing help, hope and
healing along the way.
We have to also be remindedthat we are sick, we have a

(06:31):
mental health condition and oursituation, circumstances and how
we feel varies from day to day.
That depression wins, becausethat will invariably happen.
But as long as we remember thatgiving up is never an option

(06:58):
and we keep pushing ourselves toget up, to wash the dishes, to
vacuum one room, to mail aletter, to walk outside, as long
as we are trying, as long asyou are making a concerted
effort to manage your mentalhealth condition.
It is so important that youcelebrate the small wins, no
matter how insignificant theymay seem.

(07:20):
If you are moving fromcompleting two tasks every day
to the next day completing three, that is progress and is
building momentum.
We can be our worst critic, sogive yourself credit for for
everything that you do.
And I want to remind you thatmanaging a mental illness is

(07:45):
exhausting, it's hard, it'sunfair and it makes life very
difficult.
But if we continue to movealong our journey, all storms
come to an end.

(08:06):
Bad times cannot last always.
It just does not line up withthe natural order of things.
So when you are feeling downand out, it is okay to seek
solace and to get some rest, butwhen the next day comes about,

(08:27):
be ready and positioned totackle that day with all that
you've got and all that you canbring to make yourself feel
better.
One other thing I want toremind you is when you get up in
the morning and you don't eatanything, you are not feeding

(08:49):
your mental health.
When you have something to eatsome toast, some eggs, some
bacon, putting something in yourstomach you are feeding your
mental health and you willnaturally get a rise in spirit
and feel better when you take ashower.

(09:09):
The same thing.
When you're taking a shower, you are allowing that hot water
to come down and to invigorateyou.
Some of the small steps that wecan take each and every day
will set up our day for success.
So what do we do when we feellike we just can't keep going

(09:34):
and we want to give up?
We begin to speak life overourselves.
We say things like I am loved,I am not alone, my mind is being
renewed.
We talk to someone that lovesus, an accountability partner,
someone who we can speak to, whocan inspire us.

(09:57):
But we always remember that weare special, important, and even
though we're not feeling goodright now, it doesn't mean that
we will never get to the placewhere we're going.
Our mind can be one of thetoughest things to ward off.

(10:20):
When you have negative thoughtscoming into your mind, you have
to stop them in their tracksand say oh no, I am somebody, I
am fearfully and wonderfullymade.
Do not let that thought get ahold of you, because once it
does, you will get a flood ofnegative thoughts.

(10:44):
Replace that negative thoughtwith something positive and,
even if you don't feel good, sayto yourself.
I feel good, I'm fine and thistoo shall pass.
I am going to get through this.
I am not my depression.
I am going to get through this.

(11:06):
I am not my depression.
I am somebody and I canovercome.
When we speak life into ourspirit, it means everything.
When we have a pity party andwe're upset and we feel defeated
, it is just going to makematters worse.
So remind yourself that you arecapable of handling your mental

(11:30):
health situation and you willget through it.
Never give up.
Stay in the game of life, keepgoing, and please know that I
completely understand that justsaying keep going is not as easy
as it may sound.
It is difficult, it is hard andyou just don't want to, but we

(11:57):
must.
We have to keep going.
We don't have a choice.
I never want to end my podcastwithout thanking you so very
much for listening.
You are the best part of winover depression and I am so
excited to remind you that the14 days to mental health.

Stuff You Should Know
Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
