The Power of Starting: Building Your Career Without a College Degree

In this episode of 'Winning Without College', host Stuart, a fellow college dropout, addresses the most commonly asked question: 'How do I start?'

Drawing from a listener's inquiry about moving beyond a cashier's role without a college degree, Stuart emphasizes the importance of 'just starting' as a fundamental approach to career advancement.

He outlines actionable steps focusing on building a strong reputation, establishing a professional network, and continuously seeking learning opportunities within one's current job.

The episode offers advice on becoming an invaluable employee, networking across departments, and maintaining connections with former coworkers and managers.

Stuart suggests that these strategies, combined with tracking one's accomplishments and consistently offering help to others, form the foundation for long-term career success without the need for a formal college education.

He concludes with a reminder that these efforts are an investment in oneself, aimed at building a solid base for future career opportunities.

Stuart (00:05):

in business and in life all without acollege degree my name is Stuart your
host your coach and fellow college dropout
In this podcast I give you actionablesteps you can take right now in your
career to set yourself up for rapid careeradvancement entrepreneurial success and
achieving an above average lifestyle

(00:28):
So today we're going to talk about howdo I start and this is probably the
question that I get the most out ofEvery time that I talk to somebody and
tell them what I do, how do you start?
And this question actually comes tous today from Juan in Yuma, Arizona.
He says, I'm 22 years old and acashier at a big box store in Yuma.

(00:50):
I can't afford college, but I don't wantto be just a cashier for my whole life.
What should I do first?
How do I start?
That's a great question, Juan.
And if you want to submit your ownquestion for me to answer on this podcast,
you can go to winningwithoutcollege.
com slash podcast and you cansubmit your question there.
That's winningwithoutcollege.
com slash podcast.

(01:12):
So, like I was saying, this is probablythe most frequently asked question I get
when I tell someone what I do and howI've achieved the kind of success that
I've, I've had without going to college.
The thing about it is, I feel like it'ssuch a loaded question because there's
so many things you can do right now.
So I'm glad to be able toanswer it in just two words.

(01:34):
Are you ready for this?
Ready?
The two words are, just start.
But you might be going, but where?
How?
What?
I don't, I don't know how to start.
I don't know what to do first.
Well, let me kind of go through thislist and it's, it's a lengthy one,
but every single one of these hasto do with starting because it's not
just one thing that you need to do.
You need to be doinga multitude of things.

(01:55):
So here's what you need to start.
First, you need to start building yourreputation and your professional network.
So, Even if you're just an employeeJuan or you're just a cashier, you can't
think of it in terms of I'm just a.
You have to say I am an invaluable partof a bigger picture and you need to be
the best damn employee that you can be.

(02:16):
You need to be the best damncashier that company has.
And how do you do that?
Well, you need to learn how to makeyourself invaluable to the company.
What does that mean?
Maybe it means taking over, uh, shiftsvolunteering, , to take an employee shift
that they can't work, you know, makingyourself available to call that if your
boss calls up and says, Hey, somebodycalled out today, can you come into work?

(02:37):
, you need to be Mr.
Reliable, the go to person to say, this person has never let me down.
You need to become that person.
Another thing you can do is ask yourmanager other ways to get involved.
You can say, hey, I'vebeen here for a year.
I've been here for two years.
You know, I've learned this.
I want to learn how I can get involvedin this next step or how I can
get involved in this next process.
They'd be happy to show you as longas, and this is a red flag, as long as

(03:01):
your manager is secure in their job.
If you get these managers or supervisorsthat are insecure, they, they don't
teach, you know, they feel like if Iteach somebody else how to do my job,
then they're going to take my job andthat's someone that you as red flag,
you don't want to be working for.
You want to be able to work forsomeone who will say, I'm going
to show you everything I know.
So that way you can take my job so I cantake my next level up, so I can leave this

(03:27):
job and take my next promotion as well.
And don't just start with your ownmanager . If you're in a big box
store one, like in some of these otherstores, then go into other departments.
So if you're a cashier, I don't knowhow these things are structured, but
if you're a cashier, you probablywork in a certain department.
But , maybe ask somebody in thewarehouse, ask somebody in the, in
the back, ask somebody on the salesfloor, ask these other supervisors or

(03:48):
managers, Hey, can you just talk to me?
Can you teach me some of these things?
Can you train me onwhat it is that you do?
You know, you all get coffeebreaks, you all get a little break.
So , take another departmentmanager out for a coffee break
when you're working one day.
Just say, Hey, what's up?
What time are you going on break?
Maybe we can do this at the same time.
We'll walk across thestreet to the Starbucks.
I'll buy you a coffee.
Cause I just want to learnmore about what you do.
I want to learn more about the company.

(04:09):
I want to learn more abouthow I can get involved.
And you just need to become asponge and absorb as much knowledge
and as much information as youcan about every single area.
You need to be known by all differentdepartment managers as someone
that's intriguing, aggressive, hungry for information, and is just
willing to kind of step out there.

(04:30):
The more people that you knowin the company, and the more
people that know you, the better.
Again, that's one of the great thingsabout being in a, a big box retail
store or something like that is there'sa lot of different people, a lot of
different departments, a lot of waysthat you can network and make yourself
known and make yourself invaluable.
And so why is that important?
First off, networking is one of thebest skills that you can develop and

(04:55):
use right now and every single day ofyour career, all the way up until you're
dead, not even after you're retired.
Networking and your professional networkthe people who know you, and the people
you know are gonna be some of the mostvaluable assets that you're gonna carry
with you throughout your entire career.
Second, people want to work with peoplethat they like and be helpful and

(05:17):
dependable and your network starts withthat people that you're doing right now.
You see, your co workers aregoing to come and go and your
managers are going to come and go.
And so when they go, You'll want to beremembered by them, because they're going
to say, Hey, who was that guy that Iused to work with that was just always
so reliable, I need him on my team.
He helped me out a bunch oftimes, I want him working for me.

(05:39):
So when this person moves up to theladder, they might be able to come up
to you and say, Hey, I'm taking youwith me, because I love working for you.
You help me out, I'mgoing to help you out.
That's what networking is all about.
Winning without college isn'tjust a magic pill that's going
to happen overnight, okay?
This is the long game.
These are steps that you're going totake every single day, small things,

(06:01):
small accomplishments, that's goingto build up to larger wins, larger
projects, larger accomplishments.
So how do you get that experience?
Well, you can get it through schoolYes, or you can get it through
real life on the job experience.
So start gaining that experience Starttaking a list of things that you yourself
have done to make your company better

(06:23):
What have I done to shapethe future of my company?
And as we narrow that down,What have I done to make my
department's success a reality?
Better.
What have I done to make my shift better?
You know, there are things thatyou can't control, but there
are things that you can control.
You need to focus on thethings that you can control.

(06:45):
Juan, as you were talking aboutthe big box store and being a
cashier, there's probably multiplecashiers on your shift, and there's
probably multiple shifts per day.
So how do you work as a team tomake, let's say you're on day
shift, how do you make day shift?
How can you contribute to thesuccess of day shift as opposed
to swing shift or an overnight?

(07:05):
How do you get that overnightmanager, that swing shift manager
to say, man, I want my team runningas smoothly as a day shift team?
How can you contribute to that success?
Again, this is going to take some time.
I would say give it at least a yearof you networking, kicking ass,
and contributing on a larger scale.
Then I'd say take theseaccomplishments, take these
experiences, and take your networkand start shopping around for jobs.

(07:30):
You're contacting your old coworkersand your old managers that have
come and gone through the company.
And trust me, within a year, thereare going to be people that are
going to be coming in and out of yourlife and your professional career.
You gotta keep in touch with them.
Keep networking with them.
them.
You know, never make enemiesof these people because they're
going to help you find new jobs.
They're going to helpyou take that next step.
And just remember to ask yourself, what is it that you can do

(07:51):
based on your own ecosphere?
Don't worry about anyone else, justworry about what you can handle.
Don't worry about all theseother mess ups of other people.
And actually, fixing someoneelse's mistakes, now that I'm
thinking about this, is anothergreat way that you can stand out.
You know, maybe taking on, if you're acashier one, um, and you're not really
a trainer, But somebody comes on that'shaving a hard time, take that initiative,

(08:15):
go over there and say, Hey, you lookconfused, you know, let me help you,
let me show you, do you need help?
You know, going over there and takingthat kind of a leadership role is
also going to be very, very helpful.
And people will see that, it may pissoff that trainer whose job it is,
but if they're not doing the job, itgives you an opportunity to step up.
We kind of touched on this too.
Never lose touch with people whoyou've made a connection with.

(08:38):
So when I was very active, when I was working in L.
A.
in corporate marketing and developmentand all this other stuff, , I kept in
contact with a lot of people regularly.
Actually, they kept in contact with me.
Because I was the one that waswriting the checks and awarding
contracts and stuff like that.
So a lot of times they wouldalways check in with me.
But when I decided to stop workingand leave the area, I travel full time

(09:01):
right now, I do the RV life and the vanlife thing, I still make it a point to
keep in contact with people that I havemet throughout my course of my career.
I actually have a reminder in my phonethat every three or four months, , there's
a list of people that I say I wantto keep in contact with these people.
These are people Movers and shakersbecause if I ever decide I want to

(09:22):
go back to LA and get back into thiscorporate world or this corporate Work
again, they're gonna be my first callThese people are gonna be this so I
I set up this and I say every threeor four months I want to stay top of
mind and it's not gonna be anythingfancy It's just gonna be an email or a
text message something really simple.
That's just Hey, just thinking about you, checking in, hope things are going well.

(09:44):
You know, it's justsomething really like that.
I don't ask for anything.
I don't ask for help,I don't ask for this.
This is just a friendly check in.
Hey, thinking of you, hopeyou're doing well, let me know
if I can do anything for you.
And those asks, that let me know if Ican do anything for you, Are amazing.
, You just never know because maybefrom the time that I talked with
them last, maybe they got laid off.

(10:05):
Maybe there's a change in theirrelationship where they're looking
to get into something different.
So being of service to others isa very valuable way that you can
really make a name for yourself.
Again, all of this is starting tobuild out our professional network.
Every person you work with, every managerthat comes and goes, every co worker

(10:26):
that comes and goes, you're building yourprofessional network with these people.
And you'll start to, as you startto look, you'll, you'll understand
who it is that you're going towant to keep more in contact with.
The ones that are friendly, the onesthat are easy workers, you'll just
identify them as like, wow, they're goingplaces, I love their attitude, I love
their energy, I love their perspective,I love their whatever, I want to

(10:47):
hang out with, with this person more.
You'll see it versus some ofthese other people that just don't
get it, that just aren't there.
They're the whiners, they're thecrybabies, they're the ones that
complain about everything, they're theones that bring that negative energy.
, into the room.
You just don't need that.
Those, those are the people that you canput on your list, but put them on the
lower list, you know, as far as someone, because people can change, but you

(11:08):
don't have to worry about them so muchas most, as opposed to those magnetic
personalities that come into your life.
Those are the ones that you're reallygoing to want to try and, and, and keep
track of, and follow, and communicatewith more on a regular basis.
So that's how you start.
You gotta kick ass at your current job.
You gotta start buildingyour professional network.
Be helpful to your coworkers and toyour supervisors and the managers

(11:31):
and supervisors of other departments.
So again, most people think you'reinvisible working in this business.
There's a ton of other peopleand a ton of other employees, but
I see it as quite the opposite.
It's a jumpstart on building yourprofessional network opposed to working
in a small five or six man office.
That's your networknow, five or six people.
But if you're in this big boxstore, you have this opportunity

(11:53):
to touch a lot of different peopleand a lot of different departments.
And remember, always be trackingyour accomplishments, whatever
criteria that the store uses or yourcompany uses to determine whether
or not , you're doing a good job.
Be sure to track those accomplishmentsand use them as you're going to
start shopping for your next round.
And most of all, remember, you're not just a.

(12:15):
Anything you're not just a cashier.
You're not just a line chef.
You're not just a whatever, you knowYou are a important part of a bigger
picture and if you can think abouthow you can make yourself Part of that
bigger picture an invaluable part ofthat bigger picture the more success
that you're going to have Not justin this current job, but in future

(12:37):
careers and future positions as well
So that's the best way to start.
That's what I got for you todayJust start, you know I'm going
to give you a bonus tip here.
And this is something I'veheard many, many, many times.
People will say, I'll dothat when they pay me more.
Well, guess what?
That's just not going to happen.

(12:58):
These companies, theydon't, they don't do that.
It doesn't work that way.
Okay.
You're going to do this.
You're going to start now and you'regoing to do everything I told you.
Okay.
For you, because it's going to build upyour credibility, your personal brand.
This is an investment in yourself.
And what you're going to do is you'regoing to take this to that next company.
In a year or two or howeverlong, once you've built this up,

(13:22):
that's what you're going to use.
On your next job because one of theseold managers are gonna say hey, I want
one on my team Juan was there for me.
He supported me.
He helped me.
He stepped up.
I want him on my team.
I'm willing to pay him some money Youknow, that's that's how it's gonna
work But this job and the next one andthat is going to start building up your
career and start opening yourself upto a wider range of people, Again,

(13:45):
you're doing this for yourself.
You're not doing it for anyone else.
You're doing it for yourself Becausethis is the base that's going
to take you to that next step, that next step, that next step.
This is what is required for you to win.
And is the company going to benefit?
Maybe.
But, you're going to benefit more.
In the long run, because if you don'tdo this well, then you're not going to

(14:07):
be able to make it to that next step.
That's just the way that theworld works, unfortunately.
So that's what I got for you.
