Hi there!

In today’s lesson, we’ll take a look at the gear

that goes into making live videos.

First things first, live video can be done entirely

from your smartphone.

So if you’re just starting, not sure if live video

makes sense for your business, or have a tight budget,

you don’t need fancy or expensive gear.

That being said, investing in some equipment and learning

how to use it properly can elevate the quality of your

live videos.

We’ve arranged our equipment list into categories based

on the components of live video.

Mobile Video:

You can keep things on your smartphone and still have a

decent-quality stream.

The easiest way to improve the video quality of your phone

is to invest in a tripod or a gimbal.

If you already have a regular tripod for cameras, you can

use a smartphone tripod mount to mount your phone on any

regular tripod.

Otherwise, tons of tripods are made specifically for

smartphones.

For streaming outside of the house, we recommend a flexible

octopus tripod, as this will let you set your phone up in

all sorts of locations.

Or if you’re going to be walking around while streaming, a

selfie stick tripod is a good choice.

If shaky video is a problem, a handheld gimbal for

smartphones will help stabilize your video.

Some advanced gimbals will also let you pan your phone

smoothly using a joystick.

Video Cameras:

If you have a good smartphone camera (or webcam), there’s

no need to get a video camera because it complicates your

setup.

However, if your current video quality is lacking (ie. blurry

or lacking depth of color), a camera might be a good investment.

If you’re not familiar with cameras, we recommend going for a

simple and lightweight camcorder from reliable brands like

Canon or Sony.

These are designed for point-and-shoot videography, so you

don’t have to worry about camera settings.

Again, using a separate video camera complicates your setup.

If you’re not a fan of juggling devices and wires, you’re

better off spending a little more money on the newest smartphone

from your preferred brand.

Audio:

Good audio is an essential part of video. Studies show that

subpar video can usually be forgiven if the audio is clear and

legible.

The microphone in your smartphone or laptop is usually good

enough for live video. But if you want to sound more refined and

professional, you need to invest in a microphone.

If you’re streaming from your phone, you can get a microphone

that attaches to your phone.

A good option is a clip-on 3.5mm lavalier microphone with a

TRS to TRRS adaptor (to make it compatible with your smartphone

if it isn’t already).

If you’re an iPhone user, you’ll probably need a lightning to

3.5mm adaptor too. It may seem like a lot, but this set-up is

usually quite affordable!

Those with more complicated video setups have more options in

terms of microphones.

If you’re streaming from a studio, we recommend looking into

USB microphones that come with a tripod.
