(00:00):
Hey, hey, Yinning at Life Gang. It's Kimberly Roberts, your host
here, and I'm so excited to deliver little bits of insight
on living your best, most extraordinary life with, of
course, yin yoga, traditional Chinese medicine, reflexology
(00:21):
and even mindset acts. So thank you so much for
pressing play on today's episode.
Let's do this well.
(00:41):
Hello everybody, and welcome back to the Yinning at Life
podcast. Today I got something juicy for
you. I want to talk about the
epidemic that's happening in this world right now, the real
epidemic that's happening after the age of 40, and how to
(01:02):
reverse it. This is really an honest
conversation I want to have withyou.
The kind of conversation that I would have if I was just
literally sitting beside you on the couch and we were just
riffing. Because this is something that
seriously needs to be addressed. And it's blowing my mind what
(01:25):
I'm seeing happening in the world with people's bodies.
And I'm not just talking about over 40.
I'm even talking about 20 year olds.
But this is just not something that, you know, we can't just
shove underneath the under the carpet and hope it's going to go
away. This epidemic is happening.
The epidemic is that people are aging faster than they need to,
(01:48):
even young people. Bodies are shrinking, shoulders
are rounding, spines are tightening, hips are locking up.
Like, you even look at the kids now and they're walking down the
street. They're hunched forward, staring
at a device in their hands. Their spine is rounded.
Their hands are crippled becausethey're holding so tight onto
(02:11):
these devices. And you know what else is
happening? Our minds are getting busier and
racing more, more scattered, andwe're less present.
The end is, is that people are walking around feeling tense,
tired, and older than they really are.
(02:31):
And here's the thing. And the cosmetic industries are
out there pushing, you know, like take these collagen
supplements and drink this beverage and use this product
when the reality is people are getting older because they're
not giving their body and their mind what they truly need.
(02:53):
And this is what I want to talk about today.
So this faster aging epidemic, like if I look at my mom, who
just turned 79, she still lives in the house that I grew up in.
She still walks up and down the staircase.
She still cleans the house herself.
(03:15):
She still does gardening. She exercises every single day.
She has this cute little chart. My mom's super old fashioned.
OK, so there's no technology. She doesn't even have the
Internet. She doesn't even have a cell
phone. So she has this little calendar
that she has pinned on her fridge.
And it's like, you know, Monday is cardio day, Tuesday is soup
(03:37):
can lifting day, Wednesday is stretch day, Thursday is
meditation. Like, she moves her body every
day. She cooks all her own food from
scratch. So, you know, it's rare that my
mom eats stuff that's like, processed.
You know, once in a while, she'll indulge and she'll order
herself a piece or something. But she pretty much makes all
(03:57):
her own food. Is my mom on any medication?
Not a single one. She doesn't even have a family
doctor right now because her doctor retired.
So for the last six years, she'sbeen basically taking care of
herself and has it needed to go to a walk in clinic or a
hospital. Because you know what?
(04:20):
She's actually aging slower thanpeople who are even 1/4 of her
age. Now.
If you look around, so many people over 40 are sitting more,
they're moving less, they're holding so much more stress in
their muscles and living in a constant state of go, go, go
(04:41):
where the nervous system is always on sympathetic flight or
freight. That constant tension, that
tightness you feel in your neck, your hips, your lower back, that
isn't just stiffness, it's your body trying to tell you that it
needs softness, it needs space, it needs stillness, it needs
(05:04):
calm. And your mind, we haven't even
talked about that yet, But Oh, my God, with all the noise, the
screens, the multitasking, the mind is bombarded and it's
becoming more scattered, more anxious and less focused.
This is why we forget things. We feel frazzled and we lose our
(05:27):
sense of calm. This is why people are, you
know, ending up with Alzheimer'sand dementia at earlier ages
than ever before. But here's the thing, it's
reversible. This aging, you can absolutely
start to reverse this, or at least at the very least, least
(05:49):
start to slow it down. Your body is so intelligent and
your mind is so adaptable. They just need some little
tools, the right kind of tools. And this is where I want to talk
about what these tools are, these tools that I've been
using. And just like everybody else, my
(06:11):
body is aging too. But I will tell you, practices
like yin yoga, breath work, acupressure, reflexology and
meditation, these aren't just Wellness trends.
They're life lines. They're preventative medicine.
Yin Yoga is what helps lengthen the tissues that are all
(06:34):
tightening up with age because as you get older, the connective
tissue in the fascia in your body stiffens naturally.
This is why we start to shrink. Yin yoga helps to keep your
joints mobile, your fascia supple, and your posture tall
breath work. It actually brings your nervous
(06:55):
system out of stress mode so your body can rest and repair
and get out of that flight or fright state.
Acupressure and reflexology. These are pressure point
techniques that help to move stagnant energy.
They help your organs and the meridians in your body function
(07:16):
better. And meditation, It clears that
mental clutter, giving your brain the calm it's literally
craving. But the consistency, the secret
is consistency in small doses. So most of us do not have an
(07:41):
hour every single day to dedicate towards ourselves.
But The thing is, is that you know what?
The key isn't doing hour long sessions every single day.
It's about daily consistent gentle practice which could be
even 10/15/20, even 30 minutes. Like most of us are spending way
(08:07):
too much time sitting and that'swhere this faster aging epidemic
is starting. I have the most incredible 5 day
desk therapy yin yoga series. These are easy to follow
practices all under 30 minutes. You don't need any fancy
(08:29):
equipment, just 15 to 20 to 30 minutes a day to stretch, to
breathe, and to press reset on your mind and on your body.
Think of it kind of like brushing your teeth, but it's
for your body and your mind. So I want to share with you a
simple breath reset because people really underestimate the
(08:54):
power and the value of breath work.
And honestly, it's something that we all have accessible to
us. So let's do a little reset right
now together. OK?
So as long as you're not driving, if you're driving, come
on back to this part of the podcast episode, OK?
But if you're somewhere where you can close your eyes and you
(09:15):
feel safe to do so, sit up nice and tall.
Take a moment to roll your shoulders back.
And as your eyes close, take a moment to realize you're in
stillness and then start to inhale slowly through your nose
for a count of four. At the end of your inhale, I
(09:39):
want you to hold the breath in for just a second and then
gently exhale through your mouthfor six counts.
So you're going to inhale for 1234.
Hold 21 Exhale 6 54321 again through the nose.
(10:08):
Inhale 1234. Hold 1-2 Exhale through the
mouth 654321. Do you feel that?
(10:29):
You feel your shoulders softened, your jaw relaxed a
bit, your mind felt just a little bit clearer for a hot
second. You know what that is?
That's your nervous system shifting out of stress and back
into balance. And that was literally like
under a minute here. So could you imagine what a 5 or
(10:50):
10 minute breath work sequence could do for you?
And I have tons of those on my soulful Yin Yoga app that you
can happily tap into. Now, what I want for everybody
over 40, but in reality, to be honest with you, even the
(11:12):
younger generation is to start to feel strong, open, calm, to
sleep well, to feel flexible in their body, and to have an
active, joyful life. Not to be shrinking, not to be
tightening, not to be rushing through life.
Like honestly, that's how we areliving now.
(11:35):
And I don't see that getting anybetter.
That's why I'm saying this is anepidemic and it takes every
single person to start to prioritize their health and
well-being, to start to you knowwhat, get rid of this epidemic.
(11:57):
But it starts with you, and you deserve to feel good in your
body and you also deserve to feel clear in your mind.
You also deserve to not be sitting in a hospital or a
doctor's office for like, you know, 8 hours before you get
seen. You're also worthy of not having
to take medication. And the reality is, is that our
(12:24):
life isn't about doing more, it's about doing the right
things. Things like slowing down,
stretching, breathing, doing pressure point therapy, giving
yourself the time to unwind. I'm going to tell you a little
(12:47):
story here. Few years ago when things were
really intense in my life and I was still married to an
alcoholic, it used to take Me 2 hours a day.
And I was actually at that pointfortunate to have two hours a
(13:07):
day to practice yen yoga and breath work and meditation.
But it would take me two hours to decompress.
Like I honestly wouldn't even start to feel myself
decompressing till after about an hour.
(13:28):
That's how wound up and stressedout I was.
Eventually as I walked away fromthat marriage, I still had a lot
of stress in my life because I was living on my own.
And I, you know, that was, that was a big shift.
And over time I started to feel like I didn't need 2 hours.
(13:54):
I was able to wean it down to anhour and I consistently kept
practicing. And eventually I found myself
after 15 minutes feeling wow, like I feel like really good
half an hour. Wow, I feel really good.
Even 5 minutes sometimes. Wow, that felt good.
(14:18):
And now do I practice 2 hours a day?
No, I don't have the time for that.
But even on the days where I do,here's the thing.
I don't feel in my body, in my mind, like I need 2 hours.
I can literally in under 30 minutes, unwind, calm and feel
(14:41):
completely nourished in under 30minutes.
And sometimes even in 5 minutes. This is why I have my app.
Yes, there's content that is definitely more than 30 minutes.
(15:03):
But most of my meditations, all of the breath work, a lot of the
yin yoga practices are under 30 minutes.
There's even series like I talked about the Five Day Desk
Therapy series that's really perfect for people who sit all
day. And it might not necessarily
mean sitting at a desk. You could be somebody who sits
(15:25):
and who drives a lot and travels.
Maybe it's also, oh, somebody who you know, does sit at a desk
for too many hours a day. Maybe it's for the person who's
just feels so exhausted and stressed out and just cannot
(15:45):
seem to unwind. This series will open up your
body, it will calm your mind, and it'll give you the tools
that will help you move through your life with more ease and
flexibility and less tension. It's literally the antidote to
the fast aging epidemic or epidemic.
(16:08):
Pardon me. And it's a simple way to feel
like you again. It's inside my app.
It's part of the membership. I'll link it all in the show
notes for you. There's tons of other series in
there as well. There's a 14 day unwind and
calm. There's a seven day sleep one.
(16:31):
There is a 5 day morning in yoga.
If you're somebody who loves to just start your day opening up
and feeling spacious and I want you to know something.
Age is just a number, but it's how you define it that makes
such a big difference. You're not getting old, you're
(16:58):
just ready to soften and to breathe and to come back into
your body. Whether you're 4060 or 80, I
will tell you I have a range of students on my app from like
late 20s up to 80 years old and practicing.
(17:21):
And the beauty is my app is so easy to use and it's not at all
overwhelming. You can literally find what you
need in about 30 seconds. Stop this epidemic because you
(17:45):
know what? You have the ability to start to
reverse and slow down the aging process that's happening in your
body and in your mind. Nobody else is going to come and
do that work for you. It's all on you.
And I'll tell you when you startto open up your body, you start
(18:08):
to feel literally the tension peeling away off of you.
You're like, Oh my God, I want this all the time.
And I promise you, with regular practice, it won't take long
before your nervous system and your body can completely reset
(18:29):
itself in 15 minutes or less. And on the days where you're
like, you know what? I have a whole hour to practice.
Awesome. I have tons of practices on the
app that are over 30 minutes, 45minutes, 60 minutes.
And again, all of it is geared to help you calm your mind, to
(18:56):
help you sleep well, and to feelmore flexible and mobile in your
body so that you can live an active life and do all the
things that are on your bucket list.
You can live a joyful life whereevery single day it's almost
(19:19):
like you're pinching yourself because you're like, Oh my God,
this is my life. Like I get to do all the things
that I want. I get to travel if that's what
floats my boat. I get to go out for long walks
in the forest if that's what, you know, makes me feel good.
The point is, is that when you start taking care of your body
and your mind, your body and your mind will give that back to
(19:43):
you tenfold. And you'll be knocking off
everything on your bucket list, I promise you.
So thanks so much for sharing this time with me and for
pressing play on this episode. Remember anytime, take a deep
breath, roll your shoulders and remember your body loves you and
(20:07):
it's always talking to you. You just have to learn to love
it back again. And that's where the Soulful Yin
Yoga app is going to help you. So have an awesome rest of your
day and I will see you next week.
