There comes a time in every entrepreneur’s life that feels like a make or break it moment. There’s been a long-standing trend centered around “burning it down” in reference to business and business models that are no longer working for the business owners that created them. Once upon a time I actually did burn it down… slowly. One match at a time.
In 2021, I was a charred wreck, having poured my soul into running our social media + lead generation agency. We had grown fast, quietly gaining a reputation in our niche, yet remaining a well-kept secret publicly. But amidst the success, I found myself in tears in my small sunroom office, questioning the very foundation I had built.
Against the advice of my advisors who warned me with caution (since the agency was doing so well), I embarked on a deliberate process of transformation. Slowly, strategically, we shifted our agency model — from "Done For You" (DFY) services to a blend of consulting, coaching, and education (done-with-you/do-it-yourself). It was a ten-month journey, each step burning away the old until I sat in a public park on the day we offboarded our last agency client, sobbing and bidding farewell to them and the agency — retiring that chapter for good.
