Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back. It's both this morning and I'm joined by
Amy Hills, the CEO of the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania.
This is your more than welcome. I think there's a
bit of concern that goes with a lot of different industries,
not just hospitality and tourism. People are a bit concerned
as to what kind of stability in the job they've got,
particularly after you know, the rocky times of COVID. How
stable is the industry?

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Yeah, look, I think you're absolutely right. I think COVID
rocked a lot of people in all types of employment,
but more so the travel industry because obviously it showed
that we could have that shut down for a while.
But since then we have learned quite a lot, and
the most important thing is we've learned how to travel
safely and work through that, and businesses have become more resilient.

(00:40):
So what we're saying now is we are a very
stable industry and we're one to definitely look at if
you're looking at having that type of stability, because a
lot has been learned and I think there can be
some misconceptions that it might not be stable, or the
hours might be a bit difficult, but in fact those
hours can actually work around the life that you want
to live as well. So it's about having that conversation

(01:03):
with your employer.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
And having a conversation with your employer is often a
very pleasant thing to do in the tourism industry because
generally speaking, you're talking to other people who want a
bit of flexibility with their time. It might be why
they got in Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
Well that's exactly right. We're all sort of in the
industry for the same reason. So if you've got a
good employer, they want to keep their staff because they
know how hard it is to keep good staff and
to keep good team members. So you know, I would say,
always have that conversation and be really open and honest
about what you need in your life as well, and
then you'll be able to have that discussion.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
How do you go about getting into this? Do you
just sit back and wait and look at seek all
the time? Is it worth calling people or knocking on doors?

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, we get this question a lot, and I think
obviously we all know the proven method of looking through SEEK.
But what I would say, and what a lot of
business operators in the industry have said to me, is
just if you're interested in a business, say if you
like a Pennicott Wilderness Adventures or you're interested in something
like that, maybe just go and say low and say, look,
I'm looking for a job. Have you got anything around

(02:02):
because that shows that you have initiative, you have passion.
We know that there are vacancies out there, so your
chances are pretty good, and I'd say just be proactive
about it rather than just waiting for that to come
to you and land in your lap, because often that
doesn't happen. And I think there'll be a lot of
employers out there who will actually think, oh wow, this
person's got a bit of get up and go in
them and they want to be part of our business.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Like we've said, it's a transferable skill. There's all sorts
of flexible hours, and more than that, I think if
you're a people person, this is exactly the kind of
industry that you want to be in because you're constantly socializing.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
That is very true. Since I've been in tourism, I
have realized you are constantly socializing, which is a wonderful,
wonderful thing, and you meet so many different characters and
that's what I love about it.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
It does sometimes make dry July a bit harder to
do because he is true gatherings gatherings.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
And yeah, of course you can always go to those
in your own way, but there's always something happening in
the industry and that's the thing. And there's lots of
support and mentoring as well. So if you're a young
person starting out, we've got a lot of options to
support and mentor you in terms of if you'd like
to move into leadership positions and those sorts of things.
So it's exciting and we've got a really bright future,

(03:10):
so we're looking for people to come on board and
help us chart that future.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
It's the perfect time to get involved in it. If
you're looking to find out more, there is the website
that's been set up which is more than welcome dot
com dot au. That's got a whole bunch of stories.
I've already looked at some really nice photos, and then
you can go and do Instagram stalking of the businesses
and stuff.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Yeah, I know, I love some of the stories on there.
I've learned so much myself. And yeah, as you said,
you can then do your research following that to see
if it's something that's going to resonate with you now.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
If you're on the fence, you're not really sure, would
you recommend diving in and giving it a go anywhey
per Amy Hills, thank you very much for having a
chat with us.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Thanks so much.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
We've been talking with Amy Hills, the CEO of Tourism

welcome
