Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back. It's both this morning and we're chatting with
Jonathan Cobis from visit Canberra. If you're heading that way,
what are some other things that you might like to
do in the area, Jonathan.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Well, Camera's really part of a diverse region. Access to
the snow is a really key reason why people come
to the city, but also Canberra provides great access to
the south coast of New South Wales. So for those
who are looking for along this stay in the city.
About two hours drive from Canberra is the beautiful southern
(00:29):
coastline of New South Wales, including Javis Bay, Bateman's Bay, Naruma,
many other places along there where there are Christine World
class beaches for people to enjoy it. So really in
winter you can have the chance to surf in the
morning and if you want to, you could ski in
the afternoon. It's that close in proximity.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
It is a fabulous area to be able to go.
And as far as family holidays go, I think there's
something on the plate for just about everyone. But when
you talk about things that are on the plate, I
know in Tasmania a lot of people really love the
fact that we have great wines, we have great foods.
What are some of the foody things that you can
do around Canberra.
Speaker 2 (01:02):
One of the great things about Camber and winter is
that's truffle season, and in and around Camber there's a
number of truffle farms. Those farms offer the opportunity for
people to book tours and go on truffle hunts and
a lot of those truffles end up being dug up
and then the same evening they'll be on the menus
at restaurants around the city. So, like many places around
the country, Camber really embraces local produce and the restaurants
(01:25):
really deliver a diverse range of cuisine matched with the
region's wines. Canberra specializes in chiraz and reasoning, but there's
also many other beautiful varieties that are produced by the
wine makers and they are truly world class. So Camber
produce Canbra wine, truffles, fireplace winter. It's really a great.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Experience and that sounds lovely and it is. Of course,
that's a winter thing, isn't it, because truffles are dug
up during the winter months.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Yeah, truffles are dug up during the winter months. But
one of the great things about Canberra being a city
of four seasons, as you can just spring there's beautiful
blossoms come.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Out across the city.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
We have our celebration of Spring which is Floriad which
is in Commonwealth Park and sees one hundred blooms of
tulips come to life and then heading further into spring.
Another great way to engage with the city is to
really connect with special moments, to visit our national attractions
and remembering today at Australian War Moral is probably one
of those where Australians from all around the country come
(02:18):
to learn about their families and remember and it's a
really emotional and incredible experience that people have at Australian
War Morales.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Most definitely it's a wonderful place to go and visit
and well worth every Australian. I think going to have
a look at the war memorial. What are some of
the other things that you have coming up over the
next little while in Canberra that you could also be
looking at tying in with your trip.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
It's always good to chine a trip with a major
event that's on Canberra strength are its culture institutions and
the exhibitions that those institutions produce. This winter, we have
Gogan's World at the National Gallery of Australia, which is
a rare opportunity to experience the art of French Impressionist
artist Paulgogan. One of the biggest collections ever shown his work.
(03:00):
A lot of that extended from the Pacific region and
their works from private collections and public collections that around
the world that will come together at the National Gallery
that is on to the seventh of October. From the
twenty ninth of June at the moment On in Canberra
right through to the eighth of September is an exhibition
Ancient Egypt at the National Museum of Australia, which is
(03:21):
a collection of antiquities from the Dutch National Museum and
another incredible opportunity to see sculptures, rare books, scrolls, exquisite
jewelry and a whole range of artifacts from everyday life
from ancient Egypt that those types of things very rarely
come to these shores. It's things that people but pray
to travel for Europe for and it's right here in
(03:42):
Camber until the eighth of September. And for theater lovers,
World Famous Chicago, The musical will be on at Canberra
Theater Center between the seventh and twenty second of September
as well, so great opportunity to see that multiyear war
winning musical rights here in the Capitol.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
That's about all we have time for, but thank you
very much for having a chat with us today, Jonathan pleasure.
