Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back. It's both this morning and we're being joined
with Norris Carter from Hobart Airport. Now, huge amount of
money is going into this new upgrade, which obviously must
mean that there's a lot of things that are going
to be helpful towards the economy. We've already talked about
the fact that people can come in from Southeast Asia
directly from New Zealand, you've got a one stop kind
of going in. What are some of the other benefits

(00:21):
that we're going to see out of this, So it's.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Really across the three areas of tourism, which is what
you've just talked about around trade, which is exporting fresh produce,
so great for our farmers and people who fish for
lobsters and all that stuff. And the other is our
Antarctic industry because Hobart's the gateway to Antarctica for Australia.
We already have flights a passenger aircraft. There's actually a
passenger service goes down to Antarctica, all right, Yeah, for

(00:43):
the Australian Antarctic Division. There are military flights that take
cargo with the big C one thirties and other countries
use Hobart as a bit of a base and a
stopping off point as well. So this means that we've
got more flexibility around Antarctic flights and it would mean
that we could also which we can't at the moment,
operate those Antarctic site seeing flights that go from the mainland.

(01:04):
We're a little bit closer to Antarctica, so it gives
them a little bit more fuel range and time.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Yeah, it makes perfect sense to be able to do
it from here, and I know it is on a
lot of people's bucket lists as well to go to
Antarctica just to hit the final end of the globe
as far as you could concern.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, knock off the last continent.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
There's a lot of this work that's going to be
going on. Are we keeping the money or are we
keeping the work for that within Tasmania? Is it going
to create more jobs for the little guy?

Speaker 2 (01:29):
Yeah, across our program with spending two hundred million dollars
on the terminal with Hutchinson Builders the local branch of
them doing that, so lots of work for Tasmanian Subby's
in that as well. For the airfield. There's two companies
in Australia basically who do this, and it's I call
it a bit like a traveling circus. They travel around
with all their gear. They come and set up, as
Matt said, the Ashville batching plant. They bring all their

(01:50):
trucks because it's pretty specialized. So they will do that,
but they will have some support from some local subby's
around some of the civil works and the supplies. Like
it's unbelievable the amount of crushed rock and sand that
goes in to making this. We're estimated it's something like
getting towards two hundred thousand tons of ashphalt.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Wow, lay in this program, sweet Mercy, Well, I can
guarantee you nobody's going to complain if you've used slightly
too much on it. I think the worry would be
going straight through the runway when you land, as opposed
to landing on something nice and firm.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Yeah, that's right. So you know we're spending two hundred
million dollars on the terminal. Ho about Airport's putting in
seventy million of the one hundred and thirty for the runway.
The federal government's putting in sixty not to support the upgrade.
So that's really great of them, and all that money
is going to mostly stay in Tasmania. This project's nearly
two hundred jobs during construction. We think it's going to
create over twelve hundred jobs going forward and an economic

(02:41):
boost of more than one hundred and twenty two million.

Speaker 1 (02:43):
That's fantastic. And considering Tasmania has really come up in
the eyes of the world, I know it's something that
he's getting pushed for more and more to the forefront.
So much more of our produce is getting out there,
and after COVID we had a glowing name around the globe.
It's going to be very lovely to see so many
people able to access it so defciently and so easily.
Not just good for us Tasmanians.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
And people know about Tasmania. When I've been on a
couple of trade missions with the Premiere up Indo Asia
and across Japan and South Korea, they know our produce.
People in Singapore know about Tasmania as a destination and
they want to come here. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
I think our golf courses have probably got a bit
of a reputation around the world in some areas as well,
from what I understand today, have well, I think that's
about all we've got time for today, so thank you
very much for coming in and having a chat with us.
We've been talking with Norris Carter, the CEO of Hobart Airport,
thanks for joining us. Thanks Bo and Matt Kaka, the
COO from Hobart Airport, thanks for joining us. This is
