Got a question? Send me a text.

Are you in a cycle where you feel that there's just not enough—time, money, love, or energy? That if you let go or slow down, everything might fall apart?

In this episode, I dive into the deeper roots of scarcity mindset—a survival pattern shaped by childhood experiences, generational money trauma, and cultural conditioning.

You’ll discover how scarcity shows up in everyday patterns like overworking, guilt around spending, and tying your worth to productivity. More importantly, you'll learn how to begin rewiring your nervous system to feel safe with receiving, rest, and sufficiency.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • Why scarcity is a nervous system response, not just a money problem
  • How early money stories and inherited beliefs shape your emotional blueprint
  • Sneaky scarcity habits like over-giving, people-pleasing, and resource hoarding
  • The importance of moving through sufficiency before reaching true abundance
  • Tools to shift out of fear-based thinking: thought awareness, inner child work, breathwork, etc
  • How to embody your abundant identity—one decision, one thought at a time

Erin Gray (00:00):
Today on the podcast, I want to talk about something
that I know many of us eithercurrently feel or possibly have
felt in our bodies, which isthat feeling of scarcity or lack
mentality, or scarcity mindset.
It's not just the fear of nothaving enough money, but it goes

(00:21):
deeper than that.
I believe the subtle beliefsthat run in the background,
beliefs like what if it all goesaway?
Or I have to give up somethingin order to have what I want, or
what if I mismanage my moneyand I don't make it last until I
pass away.
Welcome back to your Money, your Rules podcast.

feeling, so that you can trulylive your life, enjoy your life,

So let's talk about what isscarcity mindset.
Like, I went to the Googles andI looked it up and, by
definition, the scarce.
A scarcity mindset is apsychological state that is

(01:24):
characterized by the belief thatthe resources are limited and
that there won't be enough to goaround.
This leads to fear, anxiety anda focus on what is lacking
rather than what is available tous, and a lot of times we
associate a scarcity mindsetwith money.
That is what a lot of us feellike.

(01:47):
We have a scarcity mindsetaround, but I think and it shows
up in different ways than justmoney it is a survival pattern
wired into our nervous system.
It's often shaped by ourexperiences that we have had.
Typically, most of the time ithas happened when we were

(02:09):
children or in childhood, and itcomes from also, like think
about generational trauma, generations before us, and we
live also in a society thatencourages all things scarcity,
selling through scarcity.
When I think about turning onany TV or ads, if you're

(02:32):
watching TV, they're alwaysselling you on what you don't
have and why you need to getwhat they're selling.
It's really ultimately based infear and lack not enough, and I
think that fear is a verypowerful can be, you know, a
motivational tool and, if youunderstand, for humans that want

(02:57):
to, or have wanted to, controlthe mass population.
They have figured that part outand they use scarcity and lack
and fear to have us thinkingthat it is real.
And from my experience with myown life and in clients that I
have supported, you know thisscarcity mindset isn't just

(03:19):
about money.
It shows up with time.
It shows up with love as well, and how it presents is it looks
like overworking or peoplepleasing, saying yes because we
believe that we can't show upand be who we truly are and that
that will be enough.
So we overgive, we overcommit,we say yes when we really want

(03:42):
to say no.
We don't rest because we fearthat resting is going to slow us
down and not actually add toour life and creativeness.
You know it looks like feelingguilty when you spend on things
just for fun, the things thatyou really want, that light your
soul on fire when you thinkabout your, your inner child,

(04:04):
the little, the little girlwithin you that wants that.
Light your soul on fire whenyou think about your inner child
, the little girl within youthat wants that, and you're
telling her no.
And it can even go as far ashoarding, which is something
that I have experienced, some ofmy clients have experienced,
because we literally believethat there is a certain amount
of money in the world and alsoavailable to us, and we believe

(04:26):
that we have to ration it.
I mean, if you think about thefinancial industry, how often
have you sat down with yourfinancial planner and they talk
about what is the amount ofmoney that you're going to need
to retire off of?
Because, as if there is thisset amount of money that, when
you're in retirement, thatthat's all you're ever going to
have and you want to, you know, make sure that it lasts until

(04:47):
you pass away.
Scarcity, if you, if you reallylook at I think nature is one of
our biggest teachers isscarcity, is it's manmade?
It's, it's a, it's taught to us.
It's a lie.
I love to use, you know, natureas the example, because nature
is always growing and expanding.

(05:07):
Yes, it has seasons, but if youlook at places that have been
burnt and growth continues toemerge after the fire, or look
at old buildings that aren't inuse anymore, the parking lots
they have shrubs in them.
Again, they're growing.
There's greenery around.

(05:27):
We are nature.
If you believe that we all camefrom one source, then we are
nature, and because we all camefrom the same source, it's
inherent in our actual nature toexpand.
So I want to talk about, like, the roots of scarcity and how it
kind of shows up and how tomove through it.

(05:49):
So it can look like how yourself-worth, because if you
really take scarcity and youbreak it down, it's really a
lack of right.
So think about your self-worthand how you tie that to
productivity.
This is a lesson that I havehad to learn because I tied my
self-worth to productivity.

(06:10):
So if you only feel valuablewhen you're doing something or
you're working or you're giving, receiving might feel now you
might not use these words thatit's threatening, but that's how
it feels in the body.
It doesn't feel safe.
So we are going to, because itdoesn't feel safe, we are going
to subconsciously blockabundance because it doesn't

(06:33):
feel like it's earned.
I like to change the word fromearn because I think a lot of us
grew up with you have to earnyour keep, you have to earn a
living, you have to earn yourincome, like there's a lot of
earning versus receiving.
And when you really start topick this apart and really start
to ponder if you believe thatyou are a vessel and that,

(06:55):
whatever you believe in, god, spirit source is always trying
to give you more than what weactually need to do is expand
our vessel right.
We don't have to earn anything,we have to be able to receive
it, and by receiving it we haveto expand our vessel, and many
of us were taught that growingup.
Like I said, you have to earnyour keep, and so these stories

(07:19):
that we have keep playing on inthe background if we aren't
ready and willing to look atthem and decide that we want to
shift them.
Maybe even you know I know, andI've talked about this before
like love was withheld based ongrades or things that I might or
might not have done.
So maybe you didn't receivemoney if you didn't earn your

(07:44):
keep around the house.
So just notice and ask yourself, spend some time asking
yourself what are some of thestories that I have around my
productivity and my self-worth?
Because they are completelyseparate.
They do not mean anything abouteach other, but a lot of us
have those two tied up in eachother.
I think also, too, when youthink about when I mentioned

(08:06):
before, you think aboutgenerational trauma, like
financial generational trauma, and then like in your body that
fear that your, that your cellshold.
You know Dr Joe talks aboutthis of, and there are other
teachers and mentors that talkcells hold.
Dr Joe talks about this andthere are other teachers and
mentors that talk about this andwho knows if it's true to some.
You hear seven, some you hear14 generations.

(08:26):
But if you think about thecellular and molecular structure
that we have within our bodiesand the vibration that we are on
, and if that is carried downfrom generation to generation,
we are on, and if that iscarried down from generation to
generation until we become aware, until we start changing those
cellular and molecularstructures and biology in our

(08:48):
bodies, it's going to continue.
So maybe you watched yourparents struggle or have some
stories around what happenedwhen you were younger.
Maybe you grew up hearing thatyou have to work hard for money
or that you have to sacrificesomething in exchange for money,
or maybe even saw that withyour parents.
Maybe your dad depending on whowas back then, if you're around

(09:12):
my age 40, the breadwinner.
Back then some parents didn't.
You had one breadwinner.
You didn't necessarily have twolike you do now, but you know,
maybe you saw someone giving uptime for money and so you made
that in you know, in your mindand in your body, made that
correlation that you have togive up, you have to sacrifice

(09:34):
something in order to have whatyou want or have money.
And I know I've shared veryvulnerably about my own story
when I was around the age of 10and how that experience, you
know, with my dad and hisbusiness and what he was trying
to teach me and empower me, howthat actually shaped my
relationship with money.
You know he was coming from, Ibelieve, a loving and an

(09:55):
empowering place.
But at 10 years old, if you'renot, you know your prefrontal
cortex hasn't come online, youaren't aware of all of the adult
.
You know conversations and whatsometimes the parents are
trying to teach us, but the bodypicks it up.
And the body picked up fear andthe body picked up seriousness
around money.

(10:15):
And I learned very quickly thatmoney was serious and that
there are consequences for money.
And you know strong emotionscan either enhance or suppress
our memory.
So when we feel fear withcertain situations, this, the
brain records these details inour neurons to help us avoid

(10:39):
these similar situations in thefuture and to use appropriate
caution so these patterns don'tdisappear when we make more
money or when we have moreassets.
They live in our body until wetend to them, and so this is why
it's so important that I reallyencourage clients to slow down,
to take more time to ponder.

(11:01):
When I say ponder, I don'tnecessarily mean with your mind,
I mean become introspective.
See what you're feeling in yourbody when you are interacting
with your money or when you'repaying bills, or when you want
to purchase something and youhear no delay or you know put it
off or no.
You can't have that.

(11:21):
And the third thing, I think,is just the overall lack of
nervous system safety.
You know, we can intellectuallyI think a lot of us
intellectually know thatabundance is available to us and
that it's your birthright.
Like, how many times have weheard that and I?
But if your nervous system isnot on board, if you haven't

(11:43):
taken that into your body andembodied it and believe it and
know that it is true, then yoursystem, your nervous system, is
going to be running off those, the similar or the familiar
scarcity and fear.
And so there is a difference ofknowing something in the mind

(12:04):
and then actually bringing itinto the body and making it true
.
So I think that true wealthreally means rewiring.
Yes, it is more money, but itreally comes back to rewiring
your nervous system to feel safein the having, in the
circulation of money and timeand love, and really truly

(12:28):
putting this into practice sothat you can see right.
Like we can talk about things.
I can teach you and tell youhow to ride a bike, how to get
on a surfboard, but until youactually do it, until you feel
what it feels like to pedalthose pedals and feel what, what
that balance is like, you won'tknow what is best for you or

(12:52):
how to balance, until youactually do it, and do it
multiple times yourself.
So I would encourage you.
What is one thing that you cando this week?
To take it into your body.
So, if you truly believe inabundance, okay.
What is one thing that you cando to act from an abundant place
?
Okay?

(13:12):
So let's talk about just how toshift into sufficiency and,
ultimately, abundance.
I don't know if maybe you do,but for my journey and for
others, what I have found is youdon't go from scarcity to
abundance.
Sometimes it's too big of anervous system, but you do go
from and you can move fromscarcity to sufficiency and
insufficiency to abundance.

(13:33):
So let's talk about how toactually begin this shift.
So there are.
I always say play with practices, you know, um, so that you can
see what works for you in yourbody.
I was just talking to anothercolleague yesterday and we were
talking about her group programand she was saying about how,

(13:55):
you know, she doesn't have setways for them to get into their
body which that is what I havesubscribed to as well because
everyone is going to feeldifferent.
You know, tapping for you mightnot be the best thing, for
somebody else it may notresonate.
So you have to really just playwith some of these resources
and these practices and get intoyour body to see what works for

(14:20):
you, how to move the energy, how to ground in, and they're
not overnight fixes, you know.
This work is really aboutrepatterning and this work is
something that takes.
When I say time, I mean time isrelative, right, but it's just
not something that you feel oneway in one day and then you feel
completely transformed and allis, you know, cleaned and

(14:44):
cleared up overnight.
So, first and foremost, what Ialways encourage you to do is to
pause and actually, the momentthat you feel that panic, that
contraction, the guilt aroundmoney.
Pause and ask yourself whatstory or belief am I believing
right now?
That is creating this sensationin my body.

(15:06):
This takes slowing down.
This looks like being aware ofyour thoughts, and if you are
like how I was six years ago,you are probably running so fast
that you might not even knowthe thoughts that you're having.
So maybe it's just putting atimer on your phone initially
and seeing what are the thoughtsthat you're thinking when

(15:28):
you're working with your moneyor in your business, when you
sit down before to do yourbusiness.
You know like to work in yourbusiness, like what are some of
the thoughts that you're having, what are some of the thoughts
that you have while you'recooking dinner.
Just start to pay attention towhat are those thoughts and then
the next step I would say is toregulate your nervous system,
which is a much bigger umbrellaand um more intensive than just

(15:51):
noticing thoughts.
Right, so you can, I always say, take a breath right, breathe,
inhale, exhale.
We always have our breath.
You can do box breathing, youcan do tapping, you can do
breath work, you can do Reiki.
I mean there's just so many.
You can go ground and walk outin the grass, you can meditate,

(16:15):
you can get on your bike I meanthere's so many different ways
that you can get into your bodyand releasing the energy that
has been suppressed, your body, and releasing the energy that
has been suppressed, I alwayssay also, too, of like tending
to that little child within you,so placing your hand on your
heart.
How can you have more compassionin this moment and saying to

(16:35):
yourself you know, I'm here foryou.
You know what's what's scaringyou right now, what's bothering
you.
You know you're the, the innerchild.
Healing has been reallyimpactful for me and my clients
because, because energy knows notime and space, you can go back
, you can talk to that littlegirl inside of you when she
experienced something that maybeshe didn't get to express her

(16:58):
feelings or she didn't know howto express her feelings, and so
it got swept underneath the rug, like you can go back in your
mind's eye and you can payattention to her and you can ask
her what she needs.
And I want you to know that itall works.
You just have to decide what are, what are the ways that you are
going to use these tools tosupport you and that feel good

(17:20):
for you and you know what.
There also have been timeswhere I started with some of
these tools and they worked, andit's not to say that they don't
work now, but there's justother ways that I like to use
these tools or other tools Ilike to use to get into the body
.
So there is no right or wronghere.
This is another opportunity foryou to trust yourself to you,

(17:42):
to trust your body to you, foryou to trust your intuition and
see, like, what works best foryou.
So play with these ways tosupport yourself, and if you
want support through this, I'mhere to help you.
All you have to do is justreach out, click the link in the
show notes and I'd be happy tohave a call with you.
And then the final thing is topractice.

(18:05):
I would think, first andforemost, sufficient ways of
thinking.
Ultimately, you can go toabundant or generous ways of
thinking, but I think this isreally important because so
often we let thoughts just comein and we don't correct them.
So you really have to startbeing disciplined with your mind
, like so disciplined andwatchful.

(18:27):
When I hear a thought that isnot in alignment with a belief
or where I'm going, Iimmediately stop it, and I don't
want to say stop it, but I payattention to it and I either dig
deeper and I find out what isthat belief that's really
creating that thought, or Idecide I'm going to choose

(18:49):
something and have a differentthought as well.
So one of the things that youcan do on a daily basis,
multiple times a day, isintentionally look for where
abundance already exists.
I think so often when we'restarting some of this work,
because we are in that scarcitymindset, we're looking at what
we don't have, but we aren'tfocused on what we actually

(19:12):
already do have.
So maybe you need to start awayfrom money, because that might
be so activating for you rightnow.
But look at the trees, look athow much water we have, look at
the air that we breathe, look atthe ideas that everybody has
and what we've been able tocreate.
Look at the sunlight, theplastic and I know that's might

(19:33):
be not be the best example, butthere is so much plastic, um,
and I think that's I thinkthat's a really good example of
how we can create a.
So just look in your home, lookat like, everywhere there is,
there is money everywhere andthere is abundance everywhere,
and so so really just startnoticing how much money there is

(19:54):
out there and also how muchjust abundance.
You know, the same thing likewith scarcity.
We want to think scarcity andmoney.
We also want to think abundanceand money.
But there's an abundance oflove, there's an abundance of
joy, there's abundance offeelings, there's abundance of
time, there's abundance ofpeople.
It's just there's so much in.
Just think about abundance asthis overall thing, versus just

(20:17):
with money.
And then I would encourage youto really anchor in into the
identity work.
Like at the end of the day, I'malways going to come back to
who is the woman that?
And then fill in the blank whois the woman that feels abundant
, that allows money to circulateeasily and freely and knows

(20:37):
that it will come back to her?
Who is the woman that trustsherself with her decision-making
?
Who is the woman that honorsher knowing and moves forward
with her decision with her?
Who is the woman that honorsher knowing and her intuition
and makes decisions from thatplace versus outsourcing her
power to other people?
So think about yourself now,and up until this point you

(21:01):
might have been a person thathas identified with scarcity,
and because of this you probablyhave plenty of evidence.
So what I want you to do isstart playing with the idea of
who are you when you are nolonger ruled by fear?
Who are you when you believethat everything is working out
for you?
Who are you that trust God orspirit source universe to

(21:22):
co-create with you?
Who are you that moves fromease and calm instead of rushed
and hustle?
You know, begin showing up asher.
So you have to start thinkingand speaking, deciding,
investing from her, from thatgrounded, knowing place.
You know what would be thefirst step that you would change
and then go do that.

(21:44):
You know, releasing scarcitymindset is not just this instant
, overnight hack that we, youknow.
It's just not.
Like I said before, it's notthere one minute and then it's
gone the next.
And I believe that it takesdevotion to you and where you're
going and the life that you'recreating.
Devotion to you and whereyou're going and the life that

(22:07):
you're creating.
I believe that this money workis a sacred journey back to you
and to yourself and recognizingthat your wholeness and
abundance has always been withinyou.
It's always been there allalong.
What we're doing is we're justpeeling back these stories that
had us believing something else.
So if this episode spoke to youand you're ready to do this
work at a deeper level, in a waythat feels really regulated,

(22:30):
safe and soul aligned, I inviteyou to book a call with me so
that we can discuss how I cansupport you.
The link is in the show notesand, as always, thank you for
being here.
I see you, I celebrate you, Ihonor you and I believe in you.
Until next time.
