In this episode, we explore how the Human Design Root Center influences pressure, productivity, and financial decision-making for women entrepreneurs. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, rushed, or stuck in survival-mode with money, this podcast teaches you how to use body awareness, emotional regulation, and your natural decision authority to create calm, confident decisions. You’ll learn practical tools to reduce financial anxiety, stop urgency-driven choices, and create a money strategy that aligns with your energy instead of pushing against it.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Defined vs undefined root center patterns and money behaviors
  • Healthy stress versus survival stress in the body
  • “Is this energy mine” as a daily check
  • Calendars, buffers, and boundaries to reduce overwhelm
  • Choosing money moves from calm authority, not urgency
  • Small weekly experiments to build decision trust

Erin Gray (00:00):
Today, I am going to share a workshop that I hosted
around feeling pressured in yourbusiness and especially when
making financial decisions.
One of the biggest things that Ihelp and teach my clients to do
is to learn how to actually slowdown, to actually feel the
pressure that you are feeling inyour body, to reconnect to your
body, and to make decisions froma calm and connected, intuitive

(00:24):
place, not from a rushed andfearful one.
So this episode is gonna be alittle bit more advanced when it
comes to human design.
So if you are brand new to humandesign or you have no idea what
I am talking about or referringto, I recommend you listen to
episode 90 first.
I'm gonna put that episode umlink it in the show notes.
And if you are new to humandesign, you can go on my

(00:46):
website, you can receive yourhuman design chart, as well as
take an introductory course thatI did with a colleague of mine.
I'm gonna put both of thoselinks in the show notes as well.
So you can start there first.
So if you are new to humandesign, go do those things first
and then come back and listen tothis episode.
Also, as I have said before onthe podcast, you know, I use
human design as a tool, not anend-all-be-all, definitely not

(01:09):
the Bible, definitely notsomething to outsource our power
to.
That is one of the things aswell that I teach clients is
like stop outsourcing our powerto our advisors, our mentors,
human design, anything externaloutside of us.
And I do want to say it has beenincredibly helpful for me and to
guide my clients to understandwhen they understand parts of

(01:30):
their chart and all of theirchart.
But like I kind of use it kindof from a behind-the-scenes
standpoint.
When you start to understand howthese parts of your chart
actually play into the whole ofwho you are, you start to
recognize them um more easilyand you kind of it's like you're
onto yourself, right?
Like so with the root centerthat I'm gonna be talking about

(01:50):
today and how that createspressure, you know, it's gonna
show up for you whether you aredefined or undefined.
And one of the things that youwill learn in the workshop that
I had is that you will begin torecognize is this pressure
coming from an internal pressureor an external?
Are you trying to makedecisions?
The most important thing to takeaway from today is are you

(02:12):
trying to make decisions whileyou're in that pressured state?
Because we all know that nothinggood comes from decisions made
from urgency fear or that tight, frantic, you know, FOMO energy
that a lot of us know all toowell, and a lot of marketers use
on us.
So when you can pause, when youcan feel into your body, when

(02:34):
you can tap back into yourintuition, when you tap into
your body, you recognize what'sgoing on with your body, you
become more clear about actuallywhat is going on and whether it
is better to make a decisionright now or not.
And so just as you listen tothis workshop, think about pull
your chart out.
Think about okay, you know, where have I been making

(02:57):
decisions from that pressuredplace?
Am I creating the pressure?
Am I allowing others to pressureme into something, right?
Am I giving my power away andallowing others to pressure me
when I need more time to make adecision?
So just come into it likeeverything with an open mind and
have some fun with it.
Okay, so the root center is apressure center.

(03:20):
And like I've said in the past,I just use human design as a
tool.
I don't believe it's the Bible,I don't believe it's the end-all
be-all.
I think it's it's a way for youto really hone and get connected
back to your intuition.
And, you know, I've supportedclients that have a defined root
center, I've supported clientsthat don't.

(03:41):
I don't have a defined rootcenter.
And I think it presents a lot oftimes very similarly.
So this is the pressure center.
So you're gonna feel like thepressure to do, and it is a
motor center, meaning that itgives us energy and resources we
need to co-create.
So this center is driven byadrenalized stress and pressure.

(04:04):
And you know, not all stress isbad stress.
The stress that puts us intofight, flight, freeze, that's
not great stress.
The stress that gets us goingand gets us to, you know, build
a business in a healthy way, totake care of our body, to eat,
you know, that feels good to ourbody.

(04:25):
There's certain things that, youknow, the the things that light
our soul on fire, that thatpressure, that stress to get
started and to do the thing, that's that's good and healthy.
It's when we are in that moresurvival base that I call it,
you know, of that fight, flightfreeze, where that's not good
stress to be in.
So this center helps us getthings done.

(04:47):
And what I want you to be awareof is if you aren't mindful,
this can create a lot of stressif we don't use it correctly.
So you might have an experienceperiods of more pressure than
others.
I I think this is goes back tolike you're gonna have to play
with your body and see what thisfeels like in your body.

(05:10):
Like this whole week, I'venoticed that I was feeling a lot
of pressure.
And I think part of it is oldpatterns, old conditioning
around working.
I think also it is, you know, who you might be around and
feeding off of.
So just play with this and justrecognize, you know, I wanna, I

(05:30):
wanna go over whether you have adefined or an undefined root
center and also just bring itback to what does it feel like
in your body?
And is this a healthy stress oris this an unhealthy stress?
So 60% of the population isgoing to have a defined root.
So you might feel consistentpressure to get things done.

(05:52):
I have an undefined root and Ifeel that, and I have an
undefined root.
So this is where I think don'thold what human design says as
this, oh, right?
Like you have to just play withit and just see what this feels
like for you.
So if you have another motorcenter, like we talked about
before, like your sacral, right?
So that would make you either amanifesting generator or a

(06:13):
generator, or your solar plexusis defined, or your will center,
also called the ego or the heartcenter, if that's defined, then
that energy of that root, ifyou're defined, might be
amplified because you have othermotors in your chart that are
defined.
So what's really important thatI think, regardless whether
you're defined, undefined inyour root center or any part of

(06:35):
your chart, is you need toreally tap into your body and
know when rest is important foryou and when to rest.
I think a lot of us go too hardand too fast for too long, and
then we can burn ourselves outversus really tapping into our
body and asking ourselves, maybeyou do need to get up from your

(06:57):
desk and rest some.
Maybe you do need to say, I'mnot coming in early and I'm
gonna do, you know, just takesome time for me, or on the
weekend, or whatever it mightbe, just making sure that you
are staying connected to yourbody and how you feel and
resting when you need to rest.
So the thing that I have foundthat has been helpful,

(07:17):
regardless if you have a definedroute or not, is when you are
noticing that pressure, do youneed to actually move your body
to dissipate that energy andthat and that pressure?
Sometimes you might actually itmight feel good to actually
move.
Sometimes it might actually feelbetter to get more still and to

(07:40):
get curious about what'shappening.
So when the root is, you know, that that center, obviously, if
you're defined, when it's whenyou're feeling that pressure,
you might feel that, you know, energy, that amount of energy to
like, I always call it like theto-do list is never done, right?
Like we might feel all of thesethings that we need to do.

(08:00):
So really just honoring andchecking in when is it time to
actually do stuff?
When is it time to actually restand rejuvenate?
So if you have an undefined rootcenter, you make up roughly 40%
of the population.
And typically what we do withall the other centers, just like
this one, is if you areundefined or you're open, that

(08:23):
means that you know, you're youwe don't, we don't necessarily
want to be in the habit of this, but this is typically what
happens when we are not aware iswe take on the energies of
others and then we amplify thatenergy.
So think about, at least in theWestern world, how much the
Western society, the businessworld, really stresses and

(08:43):
pressure, like pressure aroundhustle and like getting there as
quickly as possible andovernight success and just so
much pressure to get to the nextgoal, to get to the next thing,
right?
It's almost like we don't sitback and relax and enjoy what
we've created.
We're before we're even likemaybe we're 75 to 80% there,

(09:05):
we're already thinking about ournext goal.
And so what you want to be awareof and mindful of is what energy
am I in when I am number one, doing the thing that I'm doing?
Is it coming from a pressuredplace?
And also, is this something thatI want to change, right?
Is it something that you're justso used to it that you don't

(09:27):
even know what not feelingpressure feels like in your
body?
So you might have that feelingof like just constantly feeling
or thinking you need to getthings done.
And and this has shown up, Ithink.
Here we go back to whetheryou're defined or undefined,
because I have had people thathave a defined route and it's
like they just want to get thething done because the
pressure's so intense, they wantto get it off their plate.

(09:49):
I have an undefined route and Istill feel this way.
I feel like there's it'ssomething I've had to work
through, but there's thisunderlying thread or underlying
buzz around like there's alwaysstuff to do, right?
So the one thing that I alwaysask, whether you have an
undefined or an open center, isis this energy mine?

(10:09):
Right.
Regardless of it's your root oryour solar plexus or, you know,
whatever it might be that we'vetalked about, is this energy
mine?
You really want to tap into thatbecause a lot of times when I
ask myself that question, moreoften than not, the answer is
no.
It's probably coming from eithersomeone I'm around or it's
coming from conditioning of howI grew up.
So I wanna, I wanna caution youor make you aware of like these

(10:33):
nonstop to-do lists becausehaving a to-do list, you will
just, it seems like you willjust continue to add more things
on the list.
So maybe setting boundaries foryourself, maybe, maybe setting
when you're gonna work and whenyou're not gonna work.
Or, you know, in terms ofentering into money decisions,
like what does that look likefor you so that you are not

(10:56):
feeling pressured from when Isay the wrong place, what I mean
is when it's not coming from ahealthy place, right?
So just be aware.
Like, do you have a to-do list?
Is it never ending?
Or do you actually write down ato-do list and then schedule it
and put it on your calendar?
And whatever you can fit in thatweek is what gets done.

(11:18):
And what you can't, then it goesto the next week or the
following week.
I think sometimes a lot of usare very, not very kind, right,
to ourselves and our bodies andwe over-schedule ourselves, or
we don't allow enough time whencompleting a task, or we don't
allow enough time when we'relearning a new skill to have
that buffer.
And so we overscheduleourselves.

(11:38):
So just be aware, maybe you cantake a look at your calendar,
whether you're defined orundefined, look at your
calendar.
Are you overscheduling yourself?
Are you giving yourself breaks?
Are you allowing yourself tohave pleasure and play and just
a breath throughout the day?
Are you doing that or iseverything so tightly packed?
And that is one of the thingsthat I noticed.
Like I looked at my calendarthis week and I'm like, I didn't

(12:01):
even put in, you know, likepeople can book with me on
online, but I didn't even allowfor like a lunch break.
Some days it happened where Iwas able to have one, and then
the other day it I noticed Iwasn't, and and I didn't allow
for that.
So just noticing how packed isyour schedule and what stories
are coming up.

(12:23):
If when I'm talking about, youknow, maybe moving some things
around, what stories are comingup about that pressure that
you're feeling to get it alldone.
So burnout is common, right?
I think it's common just ingeneral, right?
Like you don't have to define, have a defined or undefined root
center.
I think it's just common becausewe don't allow ourselves to

(12:44):
rest.
We don't value rest in theWestern world.
I think this is most of theworld too.
We don't value play.
We don't value, I mean, play andpleasure are the kind of the
same thing.
We don't value those things.
We don't value stillness, wevalue productivity and goals and
money making and all of thesetangible things.

(13:05):
But I have said before, like, weare all the asset, each of us,
right?
We're each of us are the assetin our business, each of us are
the asset like in our life, right?
You can't expect a thoroughbredracehorse to perform at the
level that you want it toperform at if you don't feed it
well, if you never let it rest,if you are not kind to it, if

(13:28):
you are constantly making itadvance, advance, advance.
Like that's not a healthy thing.
And your racehorse isn't goingto perform to for you at the
level that it could if you allowit to rest and feed it really
good food and give it time offand you know, give it lots of
love.
So, in a way, like we are kindof like that, right?
And so, how often do we get intothis mindset and we may not even

(13:50):
be aware of it because it's justour normal of what we are
actually feeling in our bodiesas we are going throughout our
day.
So I always ask, I said before, and all the other centers as
well.
It's like ask yourself, is thisenergy mine?
Right, it's a great habit to getinto, no matter what center it
is, you know, ask yourself thosequestions and see what answer

(14:13):
you get.
See, you know, ask me askingmore clarifying questions and
really starting to tap into yourbody to see, giving yourself
like just a second to check inwith your breath, right?
And and really see like what isgoing on here.
Is this coming from my mindtelling me I should, I have to,
I have a certain deadline?
Or is this coming from, oh, thisfeels fun and expansive.

(14:37):
Let me see what I'm capable of.
I feel a little pressure to getit done, but it feels expansive
and like moving towards versusvery heavy and like you have to
do the thing.
So, in terms of the root centerand how it pertains to money,
regardless if you are defined orundefined, really only saying

(14:59):
yes to the type of stress that'sworth entering into.
And the only way that you'regonna know how what this feels
like, or get used to this, orpractice this skill, is to do it
right over and over again.
Practice and pay attention towhen are you feeling stressed or
when are you entering intothings from like I call like

(15:19):
that false pressure or thatpressure, like I just said,
about the shoulds, the haveto's.
And when are you in the, oh,this feels fun.
Yes, it feels a little likeunknown, uncertain, but it feels
expansive.
It feels like, oh, I'm excitedto do this thing, right?
Very different energy than whenwe're not aligned, saying yes to

(15:39):
everything, people pleasing,right?
Not being discerning about whatwe are saying yes and no to,
pressure and making money, pressure and rushing, long list
of to-dos.
So really start to slow down, beintentional.
And, you know, when you'restarting this journey, it's easy
to say slow down, but the body'slike, that doesn't feel

(16:01):
familiar, that doesn't feelsafe, right?
So I'm not asking you to go from100 miles an hour to 25.
I'm asking you to go from 100miles an hour to 90.
What's one less thing that you,you know, can do or take off
your plate or move to next weekand really start to look at your
calendar, look at your financialdecisions.

(16:22):
Are you making these decisionsfrom a rushed, a pressured
place?
Or are you making thesedecisions, decisions because it
feels good and it's movingeither your business or your
personal life along in theprocess?
Just gaining clarity and gettingreally clear on where is this
decision coming from?
And in order to do that, weactually have to allow time.

(16:45):
So, like even before we do that,we might need to allow some
space in our day to allow forthat, to even look at that,
right?
So, are you scheduling, youknow, 10 minutes, you know,
maybe before the week starts tolook at your calendar and be
like, where am I in these, youknow, my calendar and then the
forcing and things of that sort.
And maybe it's something before, you know, you schedule

(17:08):
something.
Like, is this something that Ireally want to do?
Or am I just saying yes becauseI feel obligated?
Like, notice where the shouldsand the have-to's and the
ought-to's come when it comes upas you are, you know, saying yes
to things.
So, in terms of money, likeexercise for you to ponder over

(17:30):
the next week is number one, does it resonate, right?
Does this feel true or real inyour body?
Notice how often are you makingdecisions from pressure, or
you're making decisions likeyou're trying to say yes or no
to something to relieve thepressure, same thing coming from
pressure, versus following yourstrategy, your decision making,

(17:53):
right?
If you have, like we talkedabout in the solar plexus
webinar, if you have a definedsolar plexus, are you riding
your wave, or are you justhurrying up and saying yes or no
to something because thepressure feels too intense in
the body?
So really start to be aware ofwhen you're making financial
decisions, where is thisdecision coming from?

(18:13):
Is it coming from I'm trying torelieve the pressure, right?
We're moving away fromsomething.
I'm trying to relieve thepressure, I'm trying to not feel
the pressure.
That's very different energybecause we're still focusing on,
you know, with the law of focus,we're still focusing on where we
are versus moving towardssomething, riding your wave if
you are emotionally defined orfollowing your strategy, your

(18:37):
decision-making process, andthen choosing from a calm,
neutral place.
So, action that you can take tostart implementing is what
decisions do you want to makearound money over the next week?
Maybe it's decisions that youeither you've been avoiding,
you've been putting off, youhave maybe you've even been

(18:58):
hyper-vigilant about thedecisions.
So, what decision can you makearound money over the next week?
And I always say start small.
We don't need to start with likewho are you hiring in your
business or that's what comes tomind, right?
So can you practice making themusing your authority, your

(19:20):
decision making?
Go back and watch.
I think it's actually thefour-part series that Carmen, my
friend and colleague and Icreated that goes into all the
different types of decisionmaking.
So you can go back and you canwatch that webinar series to
really start to get clued or toor or connected to your decision
making and you know, uh practicemaking them from that place

(19:43):
versus a pressured place.
And if you notice yourselffeeling pressure, like that's
probably what I would say isjust start there.
Like, do you notice the pressurethat you're feeling around some
certain money decisions?
Can you just allow the pressureright now?
Can you actually feel like orfeel what it feels like in your
body?
Body, notice where thesesensations are coming from.
Notice what that feels like.

(20:04):
First, start there, awareness,right?
And then what do you actuallywant to do to release the
pressure?
Sometimes it might be, like Isaid earlier, you may just want
to be able to just sit with itand get to feel what it feels
like in your body.
Sometimes I just got to move mybody.
I got to go work out.
I got to go run.
I got to go walk.
I got to go do something to movethe energy to then come back and
then be at a centered place.

(20:26):
So notice what feels best foryou.
And it may differ, right?
Depending on the day, dependingon the situation, depending on
the amount of money we'retalking about.
So just really, really start totap into, get connected to your
body and what does your bodyneed in the moment?
And you can just ask thatquestion what does my body need
in this moment?
And typically the first answerthat your body gives you or your

(20:48):
mind, you know, intuition givesyou is the correct answer.
Sometimes it's like, I need torest.
Sometimes it's like I just needto completely unplug, put
everything down, and I need tojust close my eyes.
Sometimes it's like, I need togo walk for a bit and and and
honor that.
So figuring out, you know, howdo you want to move your body if
that's the case?
And also recognizing andstarting to pay attention to.
Do you notice feeling pressureduring certain days, times, who

(21:12):
you're with, you know, dependingon how busy maybe your schedule
is, what you have on yourschedule, what your, you know,
maybe offers that you have orwhat you're trying to launch or
what you it could be a litany ofthings, right?
So really start to see.
Do you notice a pattern?
What's coming up for you?

(21:32):
And what are you feeling?
And then, like I said, noticeit, become aware of it.
And then what do you need inthis moment?
And that is where I would startwith.
And as always, if you wantadditional further support, I'm
here for you.
You can just email me or messageme and I'll be happy to help.
And that concludes the series.
I want to appreciate you forwatching, for taking the time to

(21:54):
learn this information, tointegrate this information.
I think that's a really big one.
You know, learning it, watchingit is one thing, but actually
taking the information, integrating it, and then
embodying it so that you canactually transform your
relationship with yourself, withyour money, with your business,
and who you are is where changeand growth actually happens.

(22:18):
So thank you again for watching.
As always, I'm here to supportyou.
Just reach out and I'll be happyto help.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
