So we have a very special guesttoday.
Nakia Blair actually wasintroduced from our friend,
Carolyn Azuna, which we're inthe same circles with her.
So super happy to have you on.
A little bit about Nakia.
She's a certified professionallife coach.
Nakia has a proven track recordof guiding individuals through

(01:13):
personal and professional growth.
She's a Reiki Level 2practitioner, 200-hour
registered yoga teacher, passionate advocate for veterans
and their families, of course, and holistic wellness expert.
So you know, nakia, we got totalk a little bit, if you know,
before we went on.
So tell us you know our guests.
A little bit more aboutyourself, if you will.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
Absolutely so.
I have to first and say thankyou so much.
I'm deeply, truly honored to behere and part of this podcast
focusing on creating communitiesfor our veterans to help them
thrive.
As a proud family member offormer Navy and Army service
members, I hold truly immensegratitude for the sacrifices for

(01:54):
each veteran has made to ourservice, for our freedom.
So it's a truly, truly aprivilege and honor to be on
this collaborating with youdoing this meaningful work.
So thank you so much, Michael.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Well, thank you, truly appreciate it.
So you know a little bit moreabout yourself.
You know, if you will, just asfar as the certified life
coaching, the Reiki you know alot of people aren't familiar
with that.
I'm super interested.
I know my amazing wife has doneit.
But you know, tell us just alittle bit more about some of
those things that you do, if youwill.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Absolutely so.
I've devoted a lot of my careerto helping families, children
and working in the public schooldistrict for over 20 years and
then I moved into looking intodoing some work with, like you
mentioned, carolyn and I becamecertified as a life coach many
years ago and explored a littlebit more of the holistic realm,

(02:47):
such as Reiki and yoga, andbeing able to really integrate
the wellness, energy, healinginto promoting personal growth.
So my background a little bitI'll share with you.
When I was very young about twoand a half, three years old I
was very, very active and my momhad the idea of putting me in
dance class, and so I remembergoing to the dance studio,

(03:09):
catherine Barnett School ofDance in Red Bank, and Catherine
has been my mentor for several, several years.
She's just a beautiful,wonderful human being.
Absolutely love her.
So dance has really been ahealing modality for me, before
I even knew about the healingpieces that was taking place
within me.
It gave me that opportunity toreally express myself, to let

(03:34):
out like what I was feeling, andjust growing up in the dance
studio and being able to formcommunity through dance had been
really, really beneficial.
So working, teaching danceactually I ended up teaching
dance and I studied dance incollege and dance in a modern
dance company for a couple ofyears and ended up following

(03:57):
through with psychology.
So I fell in love withpsychology because my
concentration was movementtherapy and that's when I had
the opportunity to takepsychology classes and I
absolutely fell in love withpsychology and ended up getting
my bachelor's in psychology.
And then I pursued, continuedto move forward with my master's

(04:17):
in social work and working inthe school for many, many years
and then, you know, continuingto follow my path of taking care
of myself and personaldevelopment is how I came into
coaching and Reiki and yoga.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Awesome.
So you know it's, it's.
It's a fantastic journey you'vehad.
First of all because, man, howmany people don't realize how
good dance is for you?
Right?
I mean just moving your body, smiling, laughing, you know all
those great hormones beingreleased into your body.
The exercise alone just changesyour whole mental state.

(04:58):
So for you to start off thereand then get into psychology and
so on, that's, that's prettycool.
I like that a lot there andthen get into psychology and so
on.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
That's pretty cool.
I like that a lot, Absolutely.
You know, and I was probablyabout eight years old the first
time I began to meditate.
Catherine would have us lie onthe floor in the dance studio
and I remember her walking usthrough this beautiful scenery
and she had music on and it wasquiet and I just remember laying
there I was like, oh my God,this is amazing and gosh, I was
meditating right Like it was so,so cool and I really enjoyed

(05:30):
that.
So it's really beautiful to seegoing full circle and those
seeds that she was planting andhow that flourish and me being
able to help other people hasbeen a truly instrumental.
So I'm thankful that my motherput me in dance class and that
I'm able to give back to thosethat are looking to, you know,

(05:51):
find wellness within their livesas well.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Fantastic and we're grateful.
Mom did it too.
Yeah, because he wouldn't bethe person you are.
You know if that wouldn't havehappened, which is really cool.
So before we really dive in, Ijust want to remind everybody on
the top see, if I do it right,I pointed the right way.
Top right-hand corner of thescreen is your QR code.

(06:14):
It's a blue QR code.
Takes you toempowerperformancestrategiescom.
For people that are listeningon the podcast forums later on,
again,empowerperformancestrategiescom,
there are all kinds of.
There's two eBooks that I'vewritten free.
You know, grab those.
There are Facebook groups forboth the veterans and their
families.
Come and join, be part of ourcommunity to uplift each other

(06:37):
and help support each other.
So please join that and checkthat out.
All right?
So with that said, shall wedive in?

Speaker 1 (06:44):
Yes, let's do it.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
So can you share a moment of your story from your
journey that sparked yourpassion for holistic wellness
and transformation?
Specifically, was there amoment it was like you were
dealing with something, or thatjust you created leverage over
yourself, or what was it thatsaid this is it, this is the
passion, this is what I'm goingto follow the rest of my life or

(07:06):
be involved in to help people.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
You know, as a social worker, we are constantly
helping people and I had to takea real hard look at my life
when I realized I was reaching apoint of burnout where I was
feeling overwhelmed, definitelynot putting myself first, and I

(07:29):
really took my husband's adviceand guidance on seeking a coach.
You know, it was a differentapproach.
I was a little hesitant andthen I decided to say you know
what, let me try.
What do I have to lose?
And that was a big, pivotalpoint in my life where I was
able to see my value, my worthand to really honor myself by

(07:54):
putting myself first and alsobeing able to realize by doing
that so many things shift when Iam in such a better place and
when I put myself first, when Itake time to work out, to get up
to meditate, to read all ofthese different things, it
really makes such a bigdifference and myself, how I

(08:15):
come and present myself to theworld, how I present myself to
my home in my house, my wholehousehold shifted without me
even saying anything, without meeven doing anything.
It's like the tone and theenergy in the house was so
different, and so that was sucha pivotal point for myself that
it's like how can you keep thatsecret to anyone else?

(08:37):
You want to be able to reallyhelp everyone and teach them if
they're willing to learn andgrow.
And just know that you knowit's not selfish.
You know, I grew up in ahousehold where, you know, my
parents did a lot for us and mymom.
I would see all the things thatshe would do and then she would
do her things last right, andit's completely cultural.

(08:58):
Sometimes it's just a differentmindset and I'm so grateful to
be able to share the shifts thatI have learned with other women
, with other men, with otherfamilies, so that way they can
continue to pass down thegreatness to be able to see
shifts within their ownhousehold.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Yeah, that is absolutely fantastic and there's
some great things you know thatyou've said in there that
really really touched me.
You know, because you'recreating and I had a guest on
recently we talked about thisyou're creating that
generational change.
You know, I mean same with me,right?
I I grew up with, you know, without meeting my dad.

(09:38):
He's a veteran, had issues, youknow, when he came out, great
guy but had issues.
When he came out from all ofthat, you know, joined the
military because that's who heknew he was.
You know, went back for histhird tour of Vietnam.
And so you know, thosegenerational things that we
change by doing the work andleaning into those issues.

(10:00):
It's absolutely fantastic.
So I really love that.
You said that.
Thank you, yeah.
And then just that you foundthat passion, that fulfillment,
you know, based on other workthat you've seen and the help
and the struggles other peoplewent through, and you found your
light by helping, again fillingthat passion or fulfillment.

(10:21):
I absolutely love that.

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Thank you, and you know the other piece that I'd
like to share about that is weall go through different things
in our life, right?
Whether you know, you mentionedhow growing up with your father
and everybody has a differentstory.
Everyone has their own suitcasethat they have filled with
their own stuff.
So being able to really learnhow to release those things that

(10:48):
are in your suitcase that arenot serving you has been
extremely important piece of thework that I have been doing and
continue to do and to helpothers do.
When we hold on to thosetraumas, when we hold on to
those things that are notserving us, how that manifests
in your body.
So I love being able to utilizeReiki as a way to one help

(11:14):
cleanse and to help align thechakras, to help align different
things, to help people torelease and to work with clients
and really helping them tolearn how to release those
blocks so that way they can see, when things come up,
acknowledge it and be able tomove on from it.
Not to stay stuck.

Speaker 2 (11:35):
Yeah, amen.

Speaker 1 (11:43):
I cannot agree with that more.

Speaker 2 (11:44):
Let's talk about the reiki for for a couple of
minutes, if we can, becauseagain, um, I'm legitimately, you
know, curious about, about it.
I know a little bit, but notnearly enough, and it's it's,
you know, any energy work likethat is is very interesting,
because you know a lot of peoplelike, oh, that's-woo and
unicorns and rainbows, it's not,it's science, there's a science
to it.
It's, you know, with your cellsand your body.

(12:05):
Let's talk about that if we can.
So, what is some of the?
If someone were to go to you tohave a session, you know, with
Reiki, what are some of thethings they would expect or look
for, if you will?

Speaker 3 (12:23):
Sure, I'll give a little bit of a background on
Reiki, and I also want to give alittle bit of a background on
sound bath.
Just a tiny bit.
So, reiki is a form of energyhealing that originated in Japan
.
It involves channeling energy, promoting balance on a so you're
promoting the balance and alsohealing on a physical and

(12:44):
emotional and spiritual level.
Right, it's often used toreduce stress, promote
relaxation and support overallwellness by helping restore your
natural energy flow.
Okay, sound bath, which I alsoincorporate, and that's why I
want to share a little bit aboutthat as well is meditative

(13:06):
experience.
I absolutely love sound bath.
It's so, so relaxing.
Have you ever had anyexperience or gone to?

Speaker 2 (13:14):
Okay, we have singing bowls.
Is that the proper term?
Yeah, in our home we have Idon't know, 15 different ones,
but I've also done it again withsomeone that came to our house
and they worked with us withthat as well, it's fantastic.

Speaker 3 (13:34):
It is such a beautiful experience.
The vibrations that are createdby the instruments, the crystal
singing bowls, as you mentioned, the gongs are really great as
well and chimes you know thesound frequencies that they
really really do promoterelaxation, stress reduction,
and it really helps also tobalance your body, your mind,

(13:55):
and it's just beautiful.
It's a great experienceanywhere with those.

Speaker 2 (14:00):
Can I ask you a little bit about the science
behind it?
As far as the vibration, thesound, how does that work with
our nervous system?
And you know, how does thatkind of connect, if you will.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
Sure, so the connection with the sound bowls,
it's the different frequencies,right.
So each bowl focuses on adifferent chakra, and so those
bowls and combinations.
So I like to play all of mybowls but sometimes, maybe if
I'm traveling or if I only wantto bring one or two out, right,
then maybe I'll just focus onthat particular chakra,

(14:34):
especially if it is like when Imeet with a client and I like to
talk to my client first, right,to kind of learn a little bit
about where they're at, whatthey're experiencing, what
they're going through, and sothat really gives me a little
bit of background on how I'mgoing to work with them and what
I want to incorporate in theirsession.

(14:56):
So, typically, when I work witha client in Reiki or conducting
Reiki with them, I will have asession with them, at first a
coaching session, and then Iblend in the Reiki session where
I start with them in a quiet, private space, right, typically
it's I have candles, it's very,very relaxing.

(15:19):
And we start and the session isusually about one hour in
length and, depending on what wediscussed prior to, is where
I'll go with the bowls or chimesor gong and integrate that.
And now, if they're focusing on,maybe something that is around

(15:39):
the heart chakra, right.
So then my bowl that I'm goingto utilize may be more heavily
focused on that and thefrequency is what is really
going to hit right where theyare and they will feel and be
able to release.
And then, as I'm doing the Reikiwith them, I may say, because
Reiki is all about the energythat they are releasing and

(16:04):
where it's not has absolutelynothing to do with the
practitioner, and when I'mworking with the client, I just
focus on them.
So I'm like they're channelingthrough you know their energy
and if I feel that I need tostay in one area longer maybe it
is the heart, maybe it issomewhere else I'm also able to
utilize that and go back to thebowls to help them to release a

(16:27):
little bit to more there andincorporating some of, let's say
, going back to Carolyn, rightback to Carolyn right, being
able to pull some of that energyout and then really trying to
utilize some of that work theretoo to be able to help them to
pull out what you're feeling, because, as I can feel, feel
them and you know the energythere, and so that's how I'll

(16:50):
know this day and if somethingneeds to be.
If they need a little helpgetting some of it out, I may be
able to help them relieve thatas well.
Fantastic.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
So what would you say for veterans, you know, and
their families, you know?
I mean, there's a lot you knowthey deal with, just like you
know most people, of course, with veterans, you know it's the
reintegration into civilianlife, you know, as far as
getting out of the military, there's always, there's a
pattern that I see.
The stories are different butthe patterns over my studies are

(17:22):
are very similar.
They get out, there's ahoneymoon period, you know,
everybody's excited andrekindled and everybody's
together again in a family andthen life starts happening.
You know, as Les Brown says Iuse it all the time Life be life
, you know, because it is, youknow, and it's the way you deal
with it, obviously.
So what are some, maybe somethings that in your practice

(17:42):
that you've seen or could help aveteran with, either you know,
the seeing bowls or crystalbowls, sorry or the or Reiki
that might help kind of releasesome of that tension.
Some, you know, of the thingsthey kind of deal with when
they're coming back andreintegrating.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
Absolutely so.
First and foremost, I wouldwant to reassure them.
I'd always like to start off byletting people know those
benefits right, like what arethe benefits of offering
wellness services?
I'd like to talk to people andsee kind of like gauge where
they're at and encourage them byalways starting with an open,

(18:25):
open mind.
Um, building community is alsokey too.
I find building community whichis why I offer the soul circles
and being able to be withpeople that are like-minded, so
people realizing that they knowthat they're not alone, right,

(19:16):
talk about things that they haveexperienced.
So that way, typically, likeyou start a group, you may have
an agenda of what you may wantto talk about.
A good group really runs itselfright, because it's the members
that are in the group that arereally bringing the.
Some easy things that I feelwould be extremely beneficial
are starting off withmeditations are super helpful,
shifting and you don't have tomeditate for 20 minutes.
Yes, that is beautiful tomeditate for 20 minutes, but if
you're starting out, startingsmall, a minute, two minutes.

(19:38):
You know, I posted something onone of my groups today about
meditating in the shower.
Hopefully we're all takingshowers at some point.
That you know being mindful andbeing mindful and feeling the
water on you and just takingthat in and just being able to
take a moment and just be fully, fully present, instead of
having all of these things thatare going through our minds

(19:59):
every moment of the day.
So many thoughts, right.
So I would encourage and Iwould talk to the veterans about
stress relief and emotionalbalance, being able to really
how meditation, mindfulnessactivities, really really helps
to decrease that.
I would talk to them about howyoga and movement will help to

(20:23):
increase their physical activityright, mobility, just being
able to regain strength and howit enhances mental clarity oh,
please go ahead, okay.
Also, you know, withmeditations and yoga and Reiki,
it also helps with better sleepquality, it helps with, just in

(20:47):
general, building a sense ofcommunity if you're in a group,
and also holistic healing.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
Yeah, fantastic.
And you, you started talkingabout about yoga, and that's
literally where I was going.
Next, we haven't talked aboutthat a lot, so let's talk about
that.
We got about eight, nineminutes left.
So as far as thank you for thosetips and thoughts, though,
first of all and foremostbecause when you can go back
into self and really just focuswith intent on anything, I

(21:18):
believe that you're going tocome out better on the other
side, you're going to havebetter decision-making, you're
going to have betterrelationships, you're going to
have a better career.
Whatever the case may be, Itruly believe that when you're
in that enabled state of mindand that positive mindset,
you're going to be just better.
You know, and take the time foryourself.

(21:39):
Whether you're a veteran, afamily member, first responder
or just a normal everydaycivilian, take that time for
yourself, listen to your body, because there are so many times
that we are just going and goingand going and what happens?
We end up with burnout of one, one, one aspect or another in
our lives, and when we're givingso much to other people, you

(22:01):
know we got to give ourselvessome too, because we don't show
up the same.
So talk about some of the someof that, if you will.

Speaker 3 (22:09):
Absolutely.
That is a passion of mine, giving so much of yourself and
being in the field of socialwork, you do give so much of
yourself that you sometimes, youknow, I remember being in a
place where you know you I lostmyself, like I didn't know

(22:29):
really where I was, and I, youknow, because I was working.
I had two young children, awife, and you're trying, you're
running to sports and you'redoing all of these different
things that are fantastic, but Idefinitely wasn't putting
myself first and that burnoutreally, really hits hard.
So what I, you know, I had somany of those experiences and

(22:51):
what I learned was you have toput yourself first and you have
to take that time to really carefor and care for yourself.
You know, and when you're ableto stop and care for yourself,
then everything else will flow, things will get done and it's
okay to say no, you know, that'sa big thing.

(23:11):
It is okay to say you know, maybe this, I can't do this
today, but perhaps I can look atmy schedule next week.
You know, once I started doingthat and rearranging things that
worked best in my best interestand the best interest of my
family, things just seemed toflow a lot better and I was in
much more of a relaxed state.
So, for a veteran, you know, when I say being able to and

(23:35):
we're talking about self-care,right, which is what I build off
of self-care and buildingpeople up and helping them
realize their value and puttingthemselves first in life A
veteran puts themselves like, ifyou think about the highest,
the most, it's insane, likeyou're putting, walking into so
many different situations for usto have freedom, right, just

(23:58):
think, take a moment and justthink about that, so that it's
so selfless.
You know, that moment of I'mready to give my, to give my
life for my country.
So it is so, so important thateveryone, and specifically
veterans that we're discussingtoday, to really put that into a

(24:23):
frame, a mind frame of thevalue of their life and to be
able to see all that they havegiven and to be able to take
care of themselves.
They deserve to be so spoiledand taken care of, truly, that
it is.
It's just remarkable and it'sjust so honoring.

(24:43):
So, when you think about it, youknow to, but they have to.
A person has to realize theirvalue and they have to realize
that, yes, I am of importance.
I deserve time to rest, youknow, rest, oh my gosh.
Instead of go, go, go all thetime, take moments of rest.
It's okay to sit on the couchright and veg out if you need to

(25:05):
.
It's okay to say no.

Speaker 2 (25:08):
Absolutely.
Yeah, I think it's superimportant to have those
boundaries you know for yourself.
There's a reason why they say,put the oxygen mask on yourself
before helping others.
There's a reason becausebecause if you're three minutes
in, you're not going to behelping anybody else either.

Speaker 3 (25:24):
That's right.

Speaker 2 (25:25):
Great points, great points.
I, I, I really think, um, youknow, you know, veterans, of
course, are it's about teamright, it's about team Condition
early in their careers.
And you need to condition thata little bit sidetracked again
to take care of yourself too.
Because if you don't, if youdon't do some of these practices

(25:48):
, if you don't take that time to, you know, write down things
you're grateful for, if youdon't take that time to.

Speaker 3 (26:06):
You know, write down things you're grateful for.
If you don't take time to slowdown and be present, go outside
and ground yourself.
Do some breathing exercises.
You know very simple things.
You mentioned teams and wetalked briefly about community.
So imagine if someone in theteam in the community is
triggering you.
Right, if you are taking thetime to be aware and self-aware
and to recognize when you'retriggered, you're actually.

(26:28):
That person is showing aportion of you that is unhealed.
But a person that's notself-aware and a person that is
not taking the time to do thework for themselves won't
realize that, and then thatcommunity goes from this to that
, right.
So being able to it all playsin of itself so beautifully and

(26:51):
is so, so important to do thework on yourself.

Speaker 2 (26:54):
Yeah, absolutely.
So let's talk about yoga justfor a minute.
So what are some of, in youropinion, the best benefits
Because again, we don't have alot of time, but the best
benefits of learning yoga?
And I've got my thoughts, but Iwant your thoughts, so dive in.

(27:15):
What are some of the bestthings that you're going to
learn, get out of yoga andtraining yoga?

Speaker 3 (27:23):
So yoga and practicing yoga is.
For me, it is just a.
You know, I wanted to becertified and learned more about
yoga as a more of a personalgoal, where it's just.
The foundational purposes andprinciples of yoga were really
intriguing, and a lot of what wesee with yoga is not what yoga

(27:48):
really really is when it boilsdown to it.
There's a lot of surfacy thingsthat are put out there, but the
practice of yoga is all aboutyou.
It's your own practice.
You don't have to do ahandstand, you don't.
Yes, you will gain flexibilityand all these other beautiful
strength and all of these otherthings, but the main points and

(28:11):
it's going back to the mentalclarity, the stress reduction,
helping you sleep better, it'sjust so healing and it's just.
It's really your own practice,it's your own time and a good
teacher will tell you this isyour practice.
Don't worry about who's next toyou doing 50,000 other things
and breathing, however, and it'sall about you.

(28:32):
That's what I love about yogaand that's what I want to stress
.

Speaker 2 (28:36):
I absolutely love that.
You know and and I always sayyou know, compare others to
possibilities.
You know, compare, compareyourself and your own growth is
is really what you should belooking at, not not other people
.
Look at them for possibilities, not not for where you're
supposed to be.
