Mary Jane Holmes (1825-1907) was an American author who wrote popular novels in the mid-19th century. She was born in Massachusetts and spent most of her life in the northeastern United States. Holmes began her writing career as a contributor to various periodicals and newspapers, and she published her first novel, "Tempest and Sunshine," in 1854. Over the course of her career, she wrote more than 60 novels, many of which were bestsellers in their day. Holmes's novels were known for their sentimental and moralistic tone, and they often dealt with themes of love, family, and the importance of virtue. Her works were particularly popular among women readers, and they were widely translated and adapted for the stage.
