Speaker 1 (00:00):
The kids are on spring break. When they come back,
it's the home stretch and that is it. And the
next thing you know, the seniors are gonna be graduating.
They have like two more months of school. Yeah, and
that is it.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Man.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
And Brown's telling me about this kid. How many scholarships
did he get?

Speaker 3 (00:14):
So he got accepted the fifty eight schools and he
got over a million dollars worth of scholarships. He's in Georgia.
That's really good, man. That's why I keep telling my kid,
keep your grades up.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Man. They give you money, they do. They give you
if you're smart, they give you money.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
I was unaware of just how much was available until
my son graduated. And I went to senior night because
he got an award for something in English, and they
were talking about all the bright futures and all of
this person has this, and I'm looking at They're going,
they're just handing money you away if you put in
the work.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Oh yeah, every day I get it's a letter that's
addressed to him. I think John Hopkins came in yesterday
and I said, son, this is for you. He didn't
graduated for the couple of years, and he has a
draw that he puts him in. I just put him
in a drawing. I'm like, son, open really he said, yeah,
they emailed me. I'm like, you got to let me
know these things. Sign you understand this is.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Money, they give you money.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Good. No, this kid's got a million by himself.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
A million, and now I'm assuming he's one of the
best of the best, accepted fifty eight different colleges.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Oh for sure, My goodness, man.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
So I wanted to find out if you got a
scholarship in any to go to school. I had to
track scholarship, but it wasn't The school I went to
didn't give out full you had partial, and so I
had to apply for I think we had a pell grant.
I got that and then I had to do work study,
which they gave you a job. And this is the
weirdest thing. You go to the office, they give you

(01:41):
a check. You signed a check, and you give it
right back and I'm like, can I go cash it now?
Because we understand that once this chick leaves this areaesus
are he ain't coming back. But athletics in college, when
you're on a scholarship.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
It's a job. It's no longer. Hey, we're having a
good time.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
It's yeah, because if you don't, they can pull your scholarship.
I didn't understand that. I said, nope, it's a year
to year thing. I know everyone thinks you get it
before year scholarship.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
You don't. It's a year to year thing. It's a job.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
I remember once I told the coach, I said, listen,
I got a big test on Friday that I got
to take and would leave it on Thursday. He said, yes,
you ain't taking it. What do you mean, He pretty
much said, your mama ready to pay for it, right right?

Speaker 2 (02:32):
You turned yours down.

Speaker 4 (02:33):
Yeah, I could have gone for softball, but I just
like I was done with softball at that point, and
I knew that it was going to be my whole life.
I said yes to that, and I just already had
like everything planned out that I wanted to do, and
so I said no to the softball. And then I
could have gotten money for being Native American, a percentage
of that, and so I just like, yeah, I already.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Pursued that Native American because you get a casinos, you
get money, you get a check for the rest of
your life.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
I don't think I'm that much of a percentage.

Speaker 5 (03:02):
Though.

Speaker 2 (03:02):
For the casino thing, I'll be checking it out. I'll
have to check twenty three and meters. Sounds good right now,
I know, I know, Oh they gonna check, but you do. Yeah,
it's amazing how it works out. It is.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Yeah, got one. Yeah, I got scholarships. I mean I was.
I was not athletic enough to get a soccer scholarship,
so I didn't do that. But I went to college anyway.
I got the Pelgram because we had no money. I
also had the work study. I worked in the student union,
and so I got the same thing. They give you
a check and then but when you sell your books back,
you get to keep the money, which is pretty nice.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
But they'll give you the money they'll get you for
a part they sell the book, of course, well one
hundred and fifty bucks, we'll get you five.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Yeah, they sell it next year for ninety. Yeah. Now
you drop a class, you also get the money back.
But that's not to hear north.

Speaker 3 (03:44):
But then I needed a scholarship, but I went to
University of North Texas because I if you get a scholarship,
you're you're considered in state. And I was gonna have
to pay out a state tuition. So I just went
through the book and found some stuff. I'm like, all right,
I know I can get these scholarships. And so I
finessed my way into a scholarship. Like I was on
the debate team in high school. I just had to
basically give an oral presentation to this board, like.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
He sign them up.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
I'm like, yes, er, I basically talk my way into
a scholarship. My test scores were pretty good, so like
I had qualifications. Yeah, but I didn't pay for everything.
I took out small student loans. I'd just paid them off.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
That's all, dude.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
I used to work my work study I mentioned before.
It was on the front desk of what we could
and we didn't have overnight visitations in the dorm, and
I would cut deals like I listen, I'm going to
the bathroom about eight forty five and I'll be back
at nine o'clock. Now what goes to that door, I
don't know, and I'll go back had about five forty
five in the morning, but I need twenty dollars and

(04:44):
i'd go in there be forty dollars on the table.
And I can't believe mister safety patrol was on the table. Seriously,
I had listen, my parents didn't save me to go college.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
Yeah, brother needed some cast you do.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (04:56):
So the only scholarship that I really had was Bright Futures,
which is funny because as Brian to saying that, you
know you're technically the book smart kind of person. I
envy you guys, because I had to take this test
my SATs. I took it three times for me to
get this. Dang Bright Futures.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
You get it. Hit a certain score, look, you get it.
And I was hustling for it. I was like, I
don't care how many times I fail. I'm gonna take it.
A coach, take it, Bright Futures.

Speaker 6 (05:18):
But the only other scholarship that was offered to me
truly was when I Averett University up in Virginia for
running cross country. This guy came in to watch one
of my friends practice during basketball because he wanted to
recruit for basketball. But then he saw me playing, and
then when he went up to the coach, he was like, hey,
what about her. She's He's like, She's like, actually, hold
on those, She's all right there, but she shines and running.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
If you know about John Morant, the basketball player, I
think he plays some Memphis.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
That's how he got discovered.
