I appreciate it.
We are definitely in thistogether so we grow as leaders
in finance and accounting and sothat we have opportunities in
the future.
(00:21):
This week I want to talk aboutgetting ahead in your career.
If you are looking forrecognition so you can advance
in your career, let's talk overa few tips, but first a quick
story.
Have you watched the movie TheIntern with Anne Hathaway and
Robert De Niro?
It is one of my favorites.
It is about the growing bondbetween a startup founder and a
(00:43):
senior intern.
Anne Hathaway is the founder, slash CEO, and she is trying to
figure out her role while shemanages this fast growth
e-commerce company.
She has a pet peeve issue earlyin the movie and Robert De
Niro's character solves it forher, winning her praises and her
opinion of him vastly shifts inhis favor.
(01:05):
It's a great example of takinginitiative to solve a problem
that immediately wins you afavorable view from senior
leaders.
Again, it's from the movie TheIntern and I highly recommend it
.
It's very fun to watch.
Now I want to talk over a fewareas to help you gain an
advantage in the workplace.
Number one mindset.
(01:25):
I talk about mindset often.
Mindset is our gateway tosuccess, to our happiness, to
getting things done and to ourrelationships.
I want you to have a growthmindset where you believe in
yourself and you believe thatyou can grow and develop into
the role you desire so youaccomplish your long term goal.
If you change your mindset, youwill change your outcome.
(01:48):
Number two have a written plan.
Speaking of goals, you musthave a written plan that
describes your goals.
Those with a written plan havea greater chance of success.
So please write down your goalsand review them often, at least
once a quarter.
I recommend looking at themonce a month.
(02:09):
Number three take risk.
Go beyond your daily tasks totake on something out of your
comfort zone.
This is where you can earnrespect and recognition.
So just don't sit back.
Take on some risks.
Number four high visibilityprojects.
A high visibility project canhelp you develop key skills,
build your network and show offwho you are and what you have
(02:32):
become in front of seniorleaders.
Again, high visibility projectsare a moneymaker for your
professional reputation.
Number five develop your softskills.
Soft skills are critical.
There is a point where you needto transition from growing your
hard technical skills togrowing key soft skills like
leadership, time management,emotional intelligence,
(02:55):
communication and many more.
Number six become credentialed.
This is still very important tomany people.
I am specifically talking aboutearning a graduate degree and a
professional certification.
This gives you professionalcredibility and should be part
of your development foundation.
Number seven be part of thecommunity.
(03:16):
Be seen and be heard, but alsodon't be irritating.
There is a boundary and abalance.
So be at your after work eventsand be in the office.
Participate in the meetingswhere you get a seat at the
table, but don't be annoying.
Contribute, but don't be aknow-it-all.
Show that you are a loyalmember of the team.
So be part of the community atwork.
(03:39):
And finally, number eight dressto impress.
Now, i used this term from themovie The Intern that I just
spoke about a few moments ago.
Again, it's dress to impress.
This might be an older concept, but we still get judged by our
appearance and if we fit in, ialways recommend that you follow
the appearance standards set bythe executives and senior
leaders in your organization.
(04:00):
If they dress up every day, then I recommend the same.
It might be this little thingthat sets you apart from others.
This doesn't mean you can't beyourself.
I also encourage that youshould be yourself, be
comfortable at work, but also Iwant you to be able to fit in.
It's a great recommendation tosee what those executives and
senior leaders are wearing andtry to emulate that as much as
(04:22):
you can.
I want you to win.
