Bonus Episode #91: Ever feel like time is slipping away while your biggest goals remain unfulfilled? You're not alone. The difference between dreaming and achieving often comes down to one critical factor: your ability to stay focused in a world designed to distract you.

We explore three powerful approaches to maintaining laser-like focus. First, you'll learn how to identify and change the habits that consistently pull you off course. Those morning and evening routines? They're more critical to your success than you might realize. Second, I'll show you how creating a vision board transforms abstract dreams into concrete daily motivation, keeping your biggest aspirations front and center when decisions get tough. Finally, we'll cover the documentation and scheduling systems that turn intentions into actions, including how to use production timers, prioritization techniques, and progress tracking to build unstoppable momentum.

What makes this conversation particularly valuable is its honesty about the role your inner circle plays in your success. The people closest to you profoundly influence your mindset and behaviors—are they lifting you up or holding you back? By the end of this episode, you'll have a clear framework for minimizing distractions, maximizing productivity, and staying relentlessly focused on what matters most. Ready to transform your approach to goal achievement? This is your roadmap to results that last.

Stephen McLain (00:00):
Hi. This is Stephen McLain of the finance
leader podcast. This is bonusepisode number 91 now How is
everyone doing this week? I amdoing very well. This week in
the United States is ournational birthday. So I'm always
excited to enjoy that. When Iwas assigned to NATO in Norway,
all throughout the year, wecelebrated the national

(00:20):
birthdays of the personnelassigned to our unit. So I got
to enjoy the stories of eachnation's founding, and we also
enjoyed special food from thatnation's culture. It was always
a fun time to have a nationalday to learn about that specific
country and respective culture.
And I also learned that not allnations have a clearly defined

(00:43):
founding day. The United Statesis a relatively young nation,
and there are countries that are1000s of years old. Very
fascinating indeed. Did yourealize that we are halfway
through 2025 which means it's agreat time to check our goals
and our plan. Have you beenexperiencing any distractions

(01:04):
this year? What is getting inthe way of your big goal for
this year? And I always like toask, how are you proceeding on
earning your required CPEs forthis year? I want to share with
you this week is a replay ofepisode number 116 stay focused

(02:11):
our goals, we complete our taskswith excellence, and we lead our
teams with purpose.
What we let distract us. Willown our energy and our time, our
habits and routines must bestrong to overcome any
distraction that can lure usaway from accomplishment and top
results. I want you to create avision of success for yourself.

(02:35):
To stay focused on what you wantto achieve. We will overcome any
distraction and obstacle thatgets in our way that will be our
pledge to ourselves. Pleaseenjoy the episode. Welcome to
the finance leader podcast whereleadership is bigger than the
numbers. I am your host, StephenMcLain, this is the podcast for

(02:55):
developing leaders in financeand accounting. Please consider
following me on Twitter,Facebook, Instagram and
LinkedIn. My usernames and thelinks are in this episode's show
notes. Thank you. This isepisode number 116, and I'll be
talking about staying focused soyou stay on track with your
goals. And I will highlight thefollowing topics. Number one,

(03:19):
change your habits so you avoidthe usual distractions. Number
two, create a vision board tohelp turn your dream into
reality. And three, schedule anddocument your goal achievement
plan. LL, cool. J said it beststay focused, go after your
dreams and keep moving towardyour goals. How many of you feel

(03:42):
the New Year is moving alongfast? It always does. Life gets
at us and time slips away. Thisis why it's so important to
become focused, to become goaloriented, and to decide to be
deliberate with our time and ourenergy. Do you want to
accomplish that big goal thisyear, what is going to stop you?

(04:03):
What can you do to prepareyourself for goal
accomplishment? How can youguard your mindset for growth
and development? That is why weneed to be deliberate about
where we use our time and ourenergy. Last week, in Episode
115 I talked about using theSMART goal planning and setting
system to help us better dissectand put together a plan that

(04:27):
makes sense for us. SMART standsfor specific, measurable,
achievable, realistic and timebound. I encourage you to plan
your goals using the smartmethod, and also to have a
written plan that can bereviewed and updated on finance
leader Academy. You can downloadthe free goal setting workbook,

(04:47):
and also please sign up for ourmid year goal review challenge,
which will begin in June. Moreinformation on that will be
shared later. Please listen tolast week's episode if you
missed it, or please listenagain if you need to. Do, I
believe it will help you. Wehave big goals, and I know we
all want to accomplish all ofthem. Sometimes it's us that

(05:09):
stops us, and we need to revieweverything we do so we set
ourselves up for long termsuccess, and it can be anything
that tries to take ourconcentration away from us. What
we let distract us will own ourtime and our energy. What often
distracts you from working on agoal, what distracts you from
any type of self improvementtask? When you get distracted,

(05:33):
it takes you away from yourgoals, and it takes you away
from your dream. Now, there aregood distractions, like your
child who needs some help withhomework, that is a great
distraction, so go do thatactivity because it matters much
in the long term plan of yourlife. But what I am referring to
is going off to do somemeaningless activity when you

(05:54):
could be working on a goal, likewatching one more episode of
that TV show. Instead of workingon a class that can help you
grow a skill or some othercritical development piece, it
comes down to which activity ismore important to you, keep your
mind and your eyes on the biggerprize. Now we need to address

(06:16):
our habits. Do your habitssupport goal accomplishment? Do
your habits support a productiveday? We all need to develop
better habits if you want tobegin with better habits to set
yourself up begin with a moreproductive morning and evening
routine. How you begin your dayand how you end your day factors

(06:37):
into our overall productivity, not just goal accomplishment,
but also your general approachto any work that you do. Are you
getting enough rest? Actuallyenough good rest? Do you have a
process that sets you up forrestful sleep? Are you drinking
enough water and have anutrition plan that supports you

(06:58):
feeling energized? Pleaseconsult your doctor or other
Certified Professional todevelop a plan that makes sense
for you. We briefly talked aboutdistractions and habits and
having a written plan, but Ialso want to mention again,
because it is so important thathaving a supportive inner circle

(07:19):
is a must. The closest people inyour life have a lot of
influence over you, what you doand even how you think. Do the
people who are closest to youalso believe in personal growth
and development? Do they have agrowth mindset, or are they huge
distractions who take you awayfrom goal accomplishment you

(07:40):
have to assess and make adecision who you will allow to
get close to you. Additionally, you must have a vision for
yourself. Have you evercompleted a vision board? A
vision board is a visualrepresentation of what you want
to accomplish and what isimportant to you. I don't think
I've ever done one before. Ihave often used post it notes to

(08:02):
remind myself of what I amtrying to get done. A post it
note on my monitor has been myway to remind me why I am
showing up. Every day I'm reallylooking at vision boards right
now, a lot of people have beentalking about creating a vision
board to capture in one place,to give powerful visual visual
reminders about me and my goalsand my dreams I am working on

(08:25):
one. Another important aspect ofstaying focused is documenting
your success, which includes allupdates as you complete your
goals and any changes you have.
This helps you to see what youhave accomplished, what you are
working on, and where you stillwant to go our success often
relies on our productivity, which is controlled by our
distractions. You may have a newTV season you want to watch

(08:48):
desperately, but you also knowyou need to dedicate some time
to goal achievement. You can setonline timers for 15 or 20
minute work sessions. Stick tothose timers, put down the
phone, set the room mood toproductivity, maybe with some
music or total silence, set theright lighting, and then work
intensely for that set time.

(09:10):
Document what you got done andreview your progress. How do you
set yourself up for success?
That is what today's discussionis all about. If your long term
goal is to be a CFO, then whatkey decisions about your life
and career do you need to make?
What roles do you need to strivefor, like team manager and
director? What organizations oropportunities can help you along

(09:33):
more than others, and what keyskills and credentials do you
need to develop and achieve?
These considerations should beincluded in your written
individual development plan.
Now, let's talk about stayingfocused so you stay on track
with your goals. Number one, change your habits so you avoid
the usual distractions.
Distractions can easily derailyou from success again. What we

(09:55):
let distract us will own ourenergy. In our time, our
distractions to become ourfocus. And the good distractions
are okay. Will you allow this iswatching another TV show going
to help you achieve your dreams, not at all. How do you want to
prioritize your time and yourenergy? Our goals are important.

(10:16):
They often tie into our dreams.
For me, my dream keeps me goingand on track every single day.
My daily hope lives in the factthat I know I'm striving to
achieve my long term dream. Ilive knowing that tomorrow will
be better than today, because Iwill do a little more work on my

(10:39):
goals and strengthen my mindset.
I know that improving ourmorning and evening routines can
set us up for more and betterproductivity. How we arise in
the morning and what we do atnight to prepare will pay huge
dividends at night. Do youprepare what you will wear the
next day? Do you put togetherall the things you will need? Or
do you run around in the morningin a frenzy? Number two, create

(11:01):
a vision board to help turn yourdream into reality. How do you
capture the vision you have foryour life? Having a visual you
can review can be powerful forsetting your mindset right, for
helping us getting even moreintensely focused, for knowing
and putting on paper or screenwhat you want to do so you

(11:22):
commit yourself to highaccomplishment. I like the idea
of putting together a visualrepresentation of where you want
to go. It serves as a reminderthat tomorrow will be better
than today, as long as we staycommitted, growth oriented and
focused by developing a longterm vision it can help you see

(11:42):
and feel where you want to goand what you want to do. A short
term vision board can also bevery helpful. Maybe there are
key decisions to be made, ormaybe you have entered a period
of life that requires you tothink only out a few months
capture what you want to do toget past this time so you can
see it and envision how younavigate the current situation.

(12:06):
Number three, schedule anddocument your goal achievement
plan, a written individualdevelopment plan becomes our
gateway to goal, accomplishmentand to success. You are more
likely to accomplish your goalsif you write them down and by
tracking your progress, Irecommend that you schedule your
goal tasks on your calendar. Ifyou plan and own your calendar,

(12:29):
you will also have a greaterchance to succeed. Use
production countdown timers.
Adopt prioritizing your tasklist. Learn to say no and learn
to ask how really importantsomething is against the big
picture. So you can prioritize, update your progress regularly.
I love to mark off progress onmy to do list and my goal list.

(12:54):
Don't a lot of us personally ownyour progress by using the tools
available when you complete oneobjective or one goal, you will
get personal pride in youraccomplishment, and then you can
complete more, which will giveyou momentum. After you build
momentum, you can beunstoppable, and that's where I

(13:14):
want you to be. A strong mindseton the path to dream
fulfillment, use the momentum ofchecking items off as they are
done to keep going strong allyear. As a quick summary, we
have a greater chance of successif we change our habits, we have
a physical representation of ourvision, and if we develop a

(13:36):
written plan that tracks ourgoals and updates our progress,
we must build successful habitsand look to a future point where
our big dream is fulfilled. Thiscan help us continue to fight
through the everyday crazinesswhile we work on ourselves and
work on our life and purposefilled goals. I know this
community can get a lot donebecause we deal with chaos and

(14:00):
crisis from the moment we log oneach day, ensure you carve out
time and energy for yourself andyour dreams now for action
today, there are a few actions Irecommend you get done today.
The first item, please do anhonest review of your habits and
what gets you distracted themost from accomplishing your

(14:21):
goals, make changes today.
Second start to develop aphysical representation of your
vision. It can be a sketch, aphoto collage or write out a
paragraph. I often use the postit note, reminder, but I am
looking at doing something withimages. This can be very
powerful. And finally, ensureyou have a written plan for your
goals and update it regularly.

(14:43):
Today, I talked about stayingfocused so you stay on track
with your goals, and Ihighlighted the following
points. Number one, change yourhabits so you avoid the usual
distractions. Number two, createa vision board to help you turn
your dreams into reality. Andthree, schedule and Doc.
Implement your goal,achievement, plan. Actions
relate to accomplishment, whichthen produces the results we are

(15:06):
looking for. You can allowyourself to be distracted and
then derailed by frivoloushabits, or you can make a
decision today to be moredeliberate and smarter with your
time. Get intensely focused soyou complete your goals, and you
will make progress in yourcareer and in your life. You
decide where you focus youreffort, your time and your

(15:28):
energy. You decide that's oftendifficult for some people, but
you get to make choices aboutwhat you worry about, what you
invest your whole self into, andwhat voices you let into your
own bubble. Next episode, I willbe sharing an interview I had
with speaker and author MarkMcMillion. Of McMillion
leadership associates. I can'twait to share some amazing
