Fox. So we do have MickCronin, and this is very exciting because
look, we are all about equalopportunity when we like you. And we
(01:34):
have Eric Musselman who's a new coachand an old friend joining the show on
Friday at Elsa, Gundu and Rockand Bruce, So we can't do that.
Coach Cronan couldn't make it out weleaving town Friday, leaving town,
leaving town right after the interview, leave with us, So he's gonna be
going so well, yeah, Ithink he's on his way to the Burnbank
(01:55):
Airport if I had to guess. So, Mick Cronin is on his way
up in studio to join the Petrosand Money Show are Chosen, Money,
the best show in town. We'veheard him say that our favorite college basketball
coach maybe ever will be here andhe's been so great to us. He's
going to be in person. Sowe have Moses here who helps us with
(02:19):
our stream and all that. Whenwe do the multi camera shoot today,
boys, we got three cameras, which is more than some USFL games.
So we are looking forward to thismccronin interview. We'll have him for a
couple segments and then we'll say goodbye, so he's on his way up.
We won't do too long of asegment here, so we can really dedicate
some time to Mick. But Matta lot of soccer talk. With the
(02:42):
international soccer or football going on,and the Euros and the Copa and the
embarrassment of last night. I don'tknow who should be embarrassed. People in
Miami, the people of the stadium, the columbianos. I don't know,
but whatever happened last night, EricNaldo knows more about international soccer competition than
any of us, and he's goingto join us in the four o'clock out.
Dear friend of the show, theonly friend of the show that has
(03:06):
ever left a credit card behind ata live remote that was done at a
bar the cohostal serve as a restaurant, Casey's Underground grev Grand Avenue, lock
downtown Los Angeles. We love oneold. A lot going on. You
mentioned the Copa America, the mayhemthat caused tens of millions of dollars of
damage to Hard Rock Stadium down toMiami where the Dolphins play cool, the
euro A spirited competition that seemed quiteone sided by team span, and they
(03:30):
ultimately emerge victorious of England. Butmost importantly, as the US men's national
team continues their follies tripping over theirown feet right there in front of them
repeatedly in the Copa America and theWorld Cup, tim USA is going down.
That's where they're going, and theyare searching for a skipper. And
(03:52):
the dude from Canada was like, hey, I'm not going to coach your
team. He's American and he's alreadyexactly right, he's already Canadian. He's
like, don't want a job totallypenetrated by the Canadian culture. You did
me dirty in the last interview roundsA. So, so he'll weigh in
on all that stuff at four thirty. He knows all about it. So
that is a that's higher him.It's a boon for us. He's an
(04:13):
ass kicker. RONALDA truly is akicker of the app. I mean,
look at this, he's coming rightin right now, already here coming in.
Are we doing it right now?Let's just do it right now.
Let's do it right now. ButI need the right now. I need
the fight song. Man, youwore an organ hat like Dana Altman was
coming. Hell is he doing?Didn't even realize that God that makes us
look like it is joining us rightnow? Oh this is great. On
(04:39):
the Southern California Toyota Dealers Celebrity Microphonein studio. Isn't this great? A
sojourn all the way to Burnbank,California for one of our favorite coaches and
the history of sports and our favoritebasketball coach. How do you know that
it's not even close? The Greatmc cronin final farce, chesting people down
(05:05):
in the PAC twelve. Now thePAC two. Wait till I tell you,
coach about the PAC two reception inLas Vegas. Went to a private
PAC to dinner. I got tohear this. I did not last long.
It is our hero. Well, well drinks. I'm out of here,
the great mc cronin, And Idon't know if he works out his
(05:27):
horses over here at the Burdbank EquineCenter, But no stranger to I'm a
horse model boy. On the PetrosenMoney Show, UCLA head coach Big ten
Bound heard he arrived on horseback quickerthan dealing with the four h five.
What's cracking, coach? How areyou welcome to the show. Thanks for
doing it. Sorry, Vic,It's good to be here, guys.
Thanks coming out of here. Ishould have timed this up. I could
(05:49):
have played Lakeside today. Well yeah, not a blade of grass out of
place there. Get out there withBob Hope, you know, shoot around.
Kevin Bailey has been there thirty fiveyears. The pro at Las,
Oh wow, he's a die hardbrewing If you ever want to be depressed.
They have the Southern California Broadcasters dinnerthere once a year and they pressed
(06:11):
that you're not a member. No, we're members. We got an award
one year and they misspelled my name. They brought it over here from Lakeside.
I remember that, and we dida public execution of Sometimes you're in
an industry and you look around andyou're like, yeah, these are my
colleagues. This I don't want tobe these contemporary this is the industry in
which I work. Boxing press conference, it's kind of feels sick. I
(06:35):
have done one. There you go, so you know what the underbelly of
the society looks like. Mc croninis our hero. He leads up one
of the most iconic basketball programs inthe history of the world, if not
the most. What is this timeof year like for guys like you.
You don't have to get all suitedand booted, but it feels like you're
pretty busy. Put my coaching hatback on. Take off in the spring
(06:58):
of general manager. Okay, sooh, but the different look, there's
no difference anymore, guys, nowI'm here, we got time. I
mean, there's just no difference anymore really between college and pro sports.
The where, the way, therules, it's just the way it is.
I mean, it's just you know, it's a bit literally sign contracts.
(07:20):
Yeah, I said that in thespring, and I think people are
kind of alarmed. But it's justtaking people. It's really hard for everybody
to get their head around where it'sat. That you're a free agent every
year if you want to be,or you can before you put your name
in a portal. You may sayyou want to negotiate with your current school
to re sign. I mean, this is literally where it's at. So
(07:45):
when I tell you your general managerand owner, of course we got we
have to raise the money to payour guys. Now at the end of
the show, you have that, that's that's all going to change because they're
going to get what we raise forthem and they're going to get paid by
the school. Right, but uh, it's very real, Like we have
a board, you know how muchyou're going to allocate to your your supposed
(08:11):
main guys, your what tier ofplayers? How did you get that done
so efficiently? Seriously this offseason, guys, I think, I mean because
you you really got that done whereit looked like, oh my god.
And at UCLA we know it takesfive signatures to get a new pencil sharp.
Seriously, so how did how wereyou able to do that in the
context of what you're really supposed tobe doing, which is coaching college basketball.
(08:33):
Yeah, well the the job descriptionchanged, so and sure, look
I was you know what's funny,we just to wrap up our season.
I was really proud of our guyswho finished fifth in the Pact. Well,
we were just in this era youcannot play where your best players are
all freshman sophomores. You just cannotdo it like you It was hard enough
(08:54):
five years ago, you cannot doit right now. It's still with fifth
year guys and everybody else just getsolder in the portal. So I was
proud of those guys. But youknow, look, to answer your question,
we had to get to the pointwhere we were financially able to get
into game. I mean, yougot to get in the game. I
mean, you know, people Ihave, all these college coaches friends of
mine say things to me like becauseI had made a statement, you know,
(09:18):
people say, well, you choseto get freshman. No no,
no, no, no no.You know, the Reds didn't choose to
loo to pass on show heo Tani. There's a reason he's with the Dodgers,
you know. And it's obviously sevenhundred million. So I mean we
were able to get in the game, and you know we're in the game
now. You still got to getguys admitted to UCLA. But there's so
(09:43):
many guys in the portal that there'sa part of it, I like,
because you get a chance to tryto pick guys. Not only are they
older, they've maybe been through somethings and they're looking for somebody to actually
tell them the truth. Where thehigh school recruit, it's still nobody's ever
told him the truth. Everybody's stilltelling him how great he is. And
(10:05):
because if they don't eat transfers highschools and if they don't he leaves AAU
teams and they've probably done that anywaybecause they got a better offer. I
mean, it's just the world ofgrassroots basketball as a whole, literally a
world of unto itself. So theolder kid is at a point maybe where
(10:26):
it's like, all right, youknow what do I want? Is it
money? Do I want money?Do I want to win? Do I
want somebody can also help me getbetter by the way, I can get
a degree at UCLA not you know, not a shavvy thing. So there's
so you kind of try to geta chance to to get guys that are
ready to act like men. They'rea little bit older. So yeah,
(10:48):
to your point, we got sevenguys when the season was over, and
it was a grind you know, well it was you know, I've never
done this, but speed dating.Yeah, it's like speed dating like bang.
You know, you're it's literally atwo week recruiting period to where you're
on with them. You're zooming, you might zoom again, next thing you
(11:09):
know, they're visiting, and thenit's you know, here's the offer,
and you got twenty four hours totake it because you can't shop me around.
Say hi to your mother Stephanie. No, it's Stacy. Yeah,
you gotta have cards. There's somebody, you know. But because it's look,
it's like the baseball winter meetings, that is the spring right now.
(11:31):
That's what we just went through. And people, you know, I talked
to like a lot of the greatplayers of yesterdayear that played at UCLA,
whether it's from Don McClain to TracyMurray to Mike Warren, and it's like
it's so mind boggling for these guys, I can imagine how of how it
is now and not just the wholeprocess of it all. So that's just
(11:52):
where so you have to break.Your job has totally changed. So now
though the roster is set and getto you know, get to switch and
be the coach again. The wejust started last week, a week from
yeah, so our summer eight weeks, you get eight weeks, eight weeks.
The you know, I'll start withthe kids because I've just you know,
(12:13):
as a father that's got college agekids, I remember, you know,
I was kind of in that sweetspot when people in California were pretty
pissed about how hard it was toget into UCS and and that was all.
Oh they still are but I'm thinkingabout, like, if you're six
eight, it's different the well,I'm thinking about the standout kids you mentioned
it's hard to win with freshmen. Now you got three kids coming in,
(12:33):
two out of Harvard Westlake, oneout of Corona Centennial. We have great
high school basketball in southern California,I would imagine, like and those are
probably the two best programs. Yeah, so how does that, like,
how does it work where you stillwant to probably get your hands on these
kids right and get them into thesystem and develop them yourself. But yeah,
on the high school level for us, it'll it's a huge emphasis now
(12:58):
because you're gonna you're gonna and tryingto put yourself in a position to win
a championship every year or compete orbe you know, be able to get
to a final four. You're goingto have to replace your better players from
within your program, but also withsome older transfers. And when you got
to be in a position you haveto be in a position to raise money
(13:20):
to be able to get the bestof the best. When it comes to
that and the right fits and allthat, well, those guys are going
to cost money. It's going tobe hard to add that guy in as
a freshman. You saw what wewent through last year. I think what
you might be getting at though,is, you know, a bigger picture
is a trickle down effect of youknow where if you grat it's just basic
(13:45):
numbers. You know, eventually you'regoing to lose a lot of guys.
You're gonna have to sign six freshmen. You know, unless you get some
Juco guys, Well, those daysare all over. Nobody's doing that.
This is not happening. So you'regetting two freshmen and three transfers. If
you get to get five guys,so three, there's three less scholarships maybe
per recruiting class, per school inDivision one going to a high school player.
(14:09):
So ultimately, look it's musical chairs, right. So if there's three
hundred and sixty Division one teams, okay, so they all have thirteen scholarships,
so I mean if they all hadten, that would be thirty six
hundred, right, So I meanyou're you're dealing there, I say,
forty two hundred scholarships roughly. Well, if they're being occupied by transfers.
(14:33):
See what I'm saying, Like there'slike there's nothing left. There's one thousand
or so kids not going to geta Division one scholarship that did before the
portal that did get a Division onescholarship. So there. What happens now
is they go Division two and that'slike you've got the kid coming from South
Dakota. They develop exactly and theSouth Dakota State great program. You know,
(14:56):
William Kyle's this veteran player, defensiveplayer to here in his league.
He's an adult, you know,he's polished. I mean, you get
to pick right a great family, great kid, you know, perfect fit.
We need athletic rebounder to go witha Daemarra. So you can kind
of put your roster literally on theboard, what what we'd like to have
(15:16):
and go buy it. And Iknow people think that's crazy. They got
UCLA coaches said go buy players. That's what it is on petros and money.
But that's what I mean, that'sthat's what it is all the way
above board. Mc cronin is ourguest of the Silkout Toyota Dealer's celebrity heads
that he's in here in studio inthe house. So that being said,
(15:37):
does it I mean football is reallythat way and a lot of basketball is
crazy in the same way, It'slike, what's it like to have somebody
else develop your guy? Oh?You know what I mean? Like I
was, you know, like shewas married before. You know. Yeah,
you get to pick where you're gettingthem from. You know. So
are you getting a guy that maybeyou think you can coach him in a
(15:58):
different way and he might be better, or you're picking guys from like you
mentioned South to go to state. They're a big winning program at their level.
So the kids a winner. Youknow, he's been part of winning
culture. So all that's a partof it. The funny part is I
was kidding around with Russell Turner downthat you see, Irvine is a great,
great coach, arguably the best coachin the Big West or one of
(16:19):
them. And I had a hairto great hair, great hair, and
he says, uh, I saidto him, I'm thinking about raising money
for your ni L. He goes, I'm all for it. He knew
where I was going. I'm gonnasend I'm gonna send a couple of players
to Irvine and you're gonna tell andhave their ni L paid for for you.
(16:44):
You get them, go ahead andstart them, try to win the
big Big West with them for acouple of years, you know, I
mean until they're ready for me.I know we're being funny, but if
I had the extra nil money, you do it right. Sure, It's
like it'd be like your G Leagueteam. It be like putting a guy
in JUCO back in the day,you know, when there was a lot
of junior college guys or G League. But then back in the day,
(17:07):
kid didn't have academics. You placedhim in a JUCO and got him back,
you know, So, I mean, what would why wouldn't you?
You know, you place him witha great coach, get him in the
UC system. Sure, so whenyou it's now I'm super fascinated now when
you say by players. So let'ssay you okay, we've got to find
a compliment to a day. That'sthat's what we're going on. Do you
(17:29):
then assign a numerical number like, hey, for this position, I've allotted
eight grand. Now I need awing score. I'm gonna need one point
one million? Is it that?Because I would assume you've got to split
the nut up a certain way,and you know what each guy is going
to cost you for that position. And so the first year it all happened,
we couldn't compete financially. This yearwe could and it's it went from
(17:55):
the guys. It went way upthis past year from the year before.
So because you know, people arecompetitive, they want to win. I
mean, all it takes is abig money guy like Petros to say,
hey, you know, hey,Mick, let's win it all baby.
Yeah, I'm gonna write you acheck. Let's do it. I'm like
that guy at Arizona, you know, when Fish left. I can get
(18:17):
angry and I use my money. With my anger, we go and we
keep the quarterback on the long widereceiver. But do you have to like
sit there with that guy and belike, hey, here's what I need.
Yeah, would you like some morecream spinners? Right? Fortunately I
have not. Uh. Our supportersaren't like that. So people that people
that have stepped up for us,they kind of know. I brother,
(18:37):
probably we would lose before I had, you know, some banker telling me,
how are you allowed to connect withthem? Oh? Okay, so
that's fine, you can. Youguys can all just doing it right,
But I didn't know if you couldcommunicate with them and tell them exactly how
those rules work. So makes thedeal and who doesn't this, you're there
are no rules none, So wherewere is? There were? And when
(19:02):
this was all put in, therewas an intention nil was supposed to be
fair market value. You can't.You cannot offer and induce players in recruits.
That's what the original rule was putin. Tennessee then got a letter
that they were going to be investigated. They had they got to their attorney
(19:22):
general, and the NCAA just stopped. They just stopped. It all stopped
because they can't lose any more lawsuits. They just can't. That's what you
could transfer. One time the northof the wide receiver at North Carolina fought
that. Yeah, transfer, theylost and they can't lose. Look,
guys, we were almost at extinction. I mean that's where we have to
(19:44):
figure out the settlement and pay wherethe players are going to get paid a
percentage of the revenue. And it'scoming. I mean the numbers twenty twenty
two million, and I mean it'sjust reality, and it's coming to CFP
money expansion to twelve. People say, why are they going to twelve?
They need the money to pay theplayers because they got to settle these three
(20:06):
lawsuits and they've agreed. But nowthe judges got to accept it. And
there's just a lot of eyes gotto be dotted. He's got to be
crossed. And the people are tryingto say, look, when you talk
about what's going on, you know, Charles Baker's ahead of NCA right now.
I was trying to save college sports. Whatever happened to Norman Dale's picket
fence exactly? I mean where arewe dude? Like, you know how
they say the ship is sailed. We can't even see the port. Yeah,
(20:30):
what a trip? So for you, I mean, your job after
all this Nick you said you getto be a coach again, is to
build a basketball team. Yeah,I'm back to there. You know.
So you have a percentage of yourplayers developed by someone else, transfer guys
that you really want there it's paidmoney for them. You got a percentage
of your players who are new guysfreshman what you're used to a new class
every year, and a percentage ofyour players who were pretty good contributors from
(20:52):
last year. Yep, how doyou push them all together? And but
that's the exciting part, right youknow? So my guy, coach Roberts
is on lakes. That guy,by the way, I think he just
got in last week. But theygood sponsor, we'll get you. He's
gonna I just play as his guests. I'll bring him to El Cave.
You don't have the membership member exactly, no need to do right, so
(21:15):
America's guests. So you guys knowwhat I'm saying. They it's look,
at the end of the day,you know, as I said with pro
sports, I mean you got guys. You know, you got team players
you drafted and came up to yoursystem. Other guys you added as free
agents. I mean it's that's whenI when I refer so the development somber
(21:37):
sommer through through you summer free agency. But you get to pick those so
that you know, that's not abad thing. You know, when you're
picking from old so you're picking youngguys, that's a hit or miss more.
You know, you get to seea finished product a little bit more
so, and then they're you know, guys are making money. So it's
just extremely similar. I mean, look the the line between amateur and pro
(22:02):
of forget you know the fact ofmaking money. But it's looking the same.
The jobs are looking the same. The difference is I got to raise
my payroll right now. No,that that's the hardest part. So,
you know, Martin Jarmon's really helpedme in the last year are developing the
department at u c l A.And we've had some key people step up.
They don't like to be named, but uh yeah they that that got
(22:27):
added onto the job title. Youknow, some places they may just do
it for you. You know,I like being here, so it is
what it is. People for money, which is yeah, not ideal.
Yeah, I usually do that afterthe eighteenth hole. That's right there.
You go are there are there teamsthat are there schools that get in and
(22:48):
you're like, we're out there.Their coffers are so much deeper than everybody
else is they It's it's a wasteof my time a little bit, maybe
one or two right now that they'replaying, you know that have that kind
of stretched it. The interesting thingwith this is was say, well,
how do you know nobody knows becauseall these uh all these NIO collectives have
(23:11):
kids on confidentiality agreements, right,so the losing school leaks something out,
you know and stuff like that.I mean, so nobody really knows.
That's the other you know, likeagain, the pro sports contracts are on
the table, right. I mean, you know that's otany got seven hundred
million. You know the numbers.Nobody knows the number unless they brag about
(23:33):
it in the locker room and causedivision on the team. Well, yeah,
it is what it is. Youknow, Hey, you're getting nothing
and you're bragging about it. Forwhat these guys are getting, nobody should
be unhappy. Compare, have youunderstand for what Jime hak, I don't
want to hear anybody unhappy because Iknow how May got nothing for three years
and he got like forty thousand hissenior year. So I don't want to
(23:56):
hear anything because he's He played inthe summer League game the other day,
like Michael Jordan's ridiculous. I calledhim, get the hell out of it.
What are you doing there? Sad? They asked me to play twice?
Yeah, he was already there practicingagainst her and then get the hell
out of here. Yeah, teachhim how to work. So as well,
if heart transplants were just that easy, you know within athletes, Well
(24:18):
that's someone that they're tough through theprogram, and now you're asking that guy
to have heart that's going to behere for a year. Yeah, but
there's guys. I mean, we'vehad some great one year Bruins, you
know, over time. I mean, you know, just Kevin Loveing off
the top of my head and LonzoBall were I both packed twelve Player of
the Year. I know Kevin was, I'm not. Lonzo should have been
if he wasn't, because I playedme in state tournaments all his stats.
(24:40):
But look again, you're picking theguys. You're allowed to pay him so
you can pick them. But backto your Petro she were talking about put
again, now sign put a teamtogether, and look, at the end
of the day, you know, you got to get guys that want to
win. And I'm pretty transparent withwho I am and how we how we
(25:02):
roll that we're going to play towin. So like, if you're on
a personal agenda and winning is nota part of it, you know,
and you and your advisors or whomeverthink that your way to get drafted is
to shoot every ball. We're notthe school for you. We're just not.
And that's okay, no problem.I want to schedule that team that
(25:25):
you play for because you're going toruin them. That's how I look at
it. We want to get thenil from Ucrvine but we don't want to
schedule U c Vine No, no, no, no, hell no,
you've seen them, they'd be they'dbe USC. Last year. I should
have warn mi aniater shirt today.Did you go there? No? Hell
no, I broke my leg therea USC campus. Uh our producer wore
(25:48):
an organ hat though for you today. He went down to get you with
a tell me he's a huge fan. I asked him, was that a
minor league hat? He thought Iwas serious, But I think he's figured
out now. I was messing withhim. We have McK cronin on.
There's a great deal of trepidation aboutwhat next year. This year is going
to be like in college sports. We just had all the football media days
and it feels wild. We'll talkabout the Big Ten and all the stuff
(26:12):
that comes with this brand new UCLAhoops team. In the very next segment,
cronin said he's good for two andhe just did one for a million
dollars. I knew you were goingto come out here and ask me about
offense. We're not going to askabout offense. Let's do it unless you've
been a million dollars morticom. Wewant to see on Friday. It is
(26:36):
the third stop of the twenty twentyfour PMS Summer Tour July nineteenth, That
is this Friday's Rock and Bruise andEl Segundo our in studio. Guest was
there last year with US one forthree Main Street, our third consecutive years
going to the Rock and Bruce andElsa gund It's a great venue, giant
open area for all of our petrustsome money, great place. Right.
Coach had a great time last yearon a shoot. Yeah, but we're
(26:59):
doing this. I couldn't go.I can't remember one you had something asked?
You're uh this Friday? I thinkmember member A member member. Oh
no, I'm the guest, rememberI remember guest. There you go ember
guests exactly right. The great mccronin is here, UCLA head basketball coach
and a sage for the people intown. A blessing to West Coast college
(27:22):
sports, especially UCLA basketball. Uhlet's talk about the conference. You know,
we just did all the football mediadays. Actually, the SEC is
going on now and everybody's trying tofigure out what Oklahoma and Texas are doing
out there. Uh it's very sad. I know you're not a West Coast
guy. By nature and by heart. But now you are I'm still I
(27:44):
feel the pain. Yeah, thePac twelve thing is tough for those of
us that became accustomed to Pullman Washington. Uh, but for you, I
can't imagine. I mean, howcan you approach things any differently? I
mean, you know who everybody is. You know what it's like. I
get asked a lot like I supposedto have some magic answer, some you
know, something to say really smart. It's not like your team is built
(28:06):
to only play in Eugene. No. I mean, look, at the
end of the day, I'll giveyou the real answers. I try to
all the time. I think it'sgoing to be the travels obviously not easy.
But I'm not worried about the travelper se in January. I'm worried
about, if you have a reallygood team, which I hope we do,
(28:32):
the cumulative effect of the travel aswe get to March. So,
how do you know, so bringingin a new strength and conditioning coach,
I think we got an elite trainer. So those two together and trying to
do everything we can to research howto deal with travel, and he said,
what do you mean, Well, okay, can you get sleeper beds.
(28:55):
You know, you know it's hardpitched. The way you give them
a row. What's that's not mostcomfortable thing in the world. What do
you do when you land? Youknow, from stretch nutrition, anything we
can I want these guys to puttingtheir heads together to come up with how
we handle this. And again it'snot like it's not the end of the
(29:15):
world. It's because I don't believein excuses. Two years ago, we
flew to Maryland, got in atnine o'clock at night, played them the
next day and win by forty andthen but and we then we got onto
the train to New York and beatthem by fifteen, beat Kentucky by fifteen.
So look, you got to havethe best team. That's the answer
(29:36):
number one. But you don't wantlike my concern again is the cumulative effect
on the travel on your players' bodiesby the end of the year, because
the conference tournament that you cannot abstainfrom. I've looked into this, try
to set out well, you cansit it out if you finish. They're
not. I think they may noteven take everybody this year. But yeah,
(30:00):
that's really don't get me started.I blew them up at the conference
thing. They said, well logistics, I said, if logistics mattered,
we wouldn't be in this league. But anyway, you know, please exactly,
it's money. Let's just be honest. So you TV networks with your
football and you're moving everybody, that'sright. So, uh, you get
(30:22):
the conference tournament the week before theNCAA tournament. So you got to go
all the way back to Indianapolis. You know this, Okay? Then if
you play all the way to theend and then you gotta do you come
back or do you sit and watchthe Selection Sunday show there if you get
to the finals and just see wherethey send you and then decide do we
(30:42):
come back or not? Intends alwaysthe last one. That's the last time
my problem. So if you getto the finals, I've done this.
There used to be CBS. Itdid the American Conference three straight years.
Literally we watched the Selection Sunday Showin the locker room, right because we
either lost in the finals and thenwon it the last two years. But
(31:04):
my three final years at Cincinnati,we watched Selection Sunday in the locker room
and then you know, then flewback and then you go. So but
for us. You know we're gonnafly all the way back. What if
they put up that you're not playingon the West coast? Do you do?
You do you even you're in Indianapolis, are Saint Louis? You stay
centrally located? What do you twohour drive from Champagne? Man? So
(31:27):
uh, that's really all like againwhen you're at UCLA and really what college
basketball has become. But it's alwaysat UCLA you're you want to you want
to try to hang the twelfth banner. You shouldn't be the coach. That's
just the way it is, youknow, I mean you have to embrace
that. So uh, I'm concernedwith March and the effects of traveling March.
(31:48):
As far as the Big Ten,hey, I look at it as
an honor. I I I'll bethe first guy to ever coach in the
Big East that packed twelve and theBig Ten get to you know, you
get to challenge yourself against some greatcoaches in the Big Ten conference. There's
you know, hands down, whetherit's coaches those in the Hall of Fame
or Matt Painter has been on arole lately and so on and so forth.
But you know, the venues aregoing to be awesome for the guys
(32:13):
to play in those venues, youknow, Mackie Assembly Hall like just incredible
place. People say that's hard.I try to train like that shouldn't matter.
It's not like the students are comingout of the stands. I mean,
this isn't a soccer game, nomatter what do they call it.
They climb in the vents. Theit's not the Premier League or whatever.
I last night America crazy, yeah, Colombiano. They're not coming out of
(32:35):
the stands after you so ideally.Yeah, for a basketball player, you
know, I don't know how itwas with football, but for a college
basketball player to play in a colder, emptier type gym is it's hard to
like really get your juices going. That's the games that concern me as a
coach, all of us, becausecoaches where the arena's on fire, you
(33:00):
know, your team's ready. Yeah, there's you know, places on fire.
I mean, you know, andI think almost every place on the
road in the Big Ten is likethat, especially if you see Alas in
town exactly. Yeah, I thinkthat might be the case. You know,
I don't know if they might haveto tell him, you know,
Kareem's not walking through that door, right, We don't need to get that
(33:20):
excited about. You know, cheeringagainst the bruss is pretty tough guy you
mentioned, Uh, Matt Painter.I'm just kind of thinking about so they
make the final last year. Yeah, and I know we had the one
transfer from Eastern I think, butit seems like that's a kid from but
Gallard Jones, it seems like that'shis approach has kind of been a little
(33:42):
bit more of a lot of thoseguys or well, when they put the
rule in, he already that wholeteam was already together, and it was
kind of like when they put therule, really when when we had when
we had a Johnny and he gota waiver to play right away. Uh,
and then that whole team came backright and you know that's when they
put them one time trans there wasreally no need for that transfer, right,
(34:06):
So people say, you know, people say he's against it. No,
we don't need I mean, wheream I gonna play him? I
Mean, here's the thing. Ifyour lineup. Jaylen Clark had six deals
yesterday in his first Summer League gamesix he I mean, it was it's
pretty good. It was like AdamSandler in uh in uncut Gems Cookies.
Do you like that? You rememberthe scene where he steals Did you not
(34:28):
see the movie? I'm vaguely familiar. I stopped with Adam Sandler after The
water Boy because he could do anybetter. You know. It's like after
Bobie Dick. What's Melville gonna write? It's a degenerate gambling movie of all
time. You have to appreciate hisdegenerate But anyways, he sneaks into a
practice and steals the ball from likeRay Joon Rondo or something. But anyway,
(34:50):
so look at this line up,Jayleen Clark, he's got a guaranteed
the NBA deal, a den Bonajust got a three years guaranteed. Uh
Hi may Hawk is gonna make twohundred million. And you know Tiger four
year starter, Dave, five yearplayer, Amari Bailey, you know,
top five high school player. Sothat's your top six. Who the hell's
transferring in? Nobody, right, you know, and let's the guys say,
(35:14):
hey, I'll come be the eighthman, you know. So like
it really wasn't a factor for us. But yeah, with Matt, I
don't know what he did this offseasonI guess what I'm getting at is was
a lot of it because of COVID. You've got these guys that are twenty
three, twenty four, they've gotSo is this all going to go?
It's going to shift a little bithere. This this sports season for people,
(35:36):
your listeners. This is it.This is it, right of the
extra year, right until somebody getsall these attorneys at like soon in the
NCAA and say, hold on,I want to stay. I'm willing to
go to school and I want tostay and this is how I earn my
living and files a lawsuit and thepeople say, well, that's ridiculous.
Well, five years ago, ifI would have told you, okay,
(35:59):
what's going on now, you justsaid that's ridiculous. So who knows.
I mean, but this is technicallythe last year of the fifth year COVID
guy. There were at least tenattorneys that just drove into the center media
and going genius. I mean, there's a class action coming right now that
is going to be put together.Matt Leonard wants to playing, right,
what's he's on these commerce what's hedoing? He's he's gotta he hired out
(36:21):
social media team. You know youcould do this. You just got Alex
with his stylishly long hair hanging withyou. But if you hired like a
full a team of youthful Not thatyou're not young, Alex, but you
are getting older. I mean we'vebeen doing this for a long you got
married. Yeah, I mean, you know you need youthful TikTok types.
They're going to hand you one ofthem tiny microphones to talk into. That's
what Liner did. That's what it'sall come down to. He sold a
(36:44):
soul to TikTok and that's how youget the real attention. That's how you
take it to the next lefe.No for me, it's all you know.
Uh, let's just let's try toLet's try to hang a banner and
Paulie and take it call it aday. I don't think I can go
that route. Get the sandal onyet. Maybe maybe get some financing for
coach select if you're in Burdbank, remember the Bourbon now, Yeah, we'll
(37:07):
get the best to get the coachwe meet some I got to get it
made. Well, that's right, that's right, Well, that's right,
Yeah, I forgot about that.We gotta get a call. This is
a place of ideas. Follow followthrough is not our strong suit. Now,
if you guys see in Burdbank orlocal to local Lank area, if
you see a guy in basketball shortsand a UCLA shirt and a white hat,
(37:30):
it's Mick cronin h. So youmight be getting out of town.
But before we let you go,you know we are proudly sponsored by Santa
Anita's right. And I just camedown from the Delmar Fair. I'll be
there. I saw that popping off. That's where you were headed last year
when you were with us every aroundthe shot they start this weekend, the
and uh and of course we havethe Equine Center right down the way and
(37:51):
it is I'm a horse Monday onthe petros and moneymo. So what's the
latest in your stable? Not yourtransfer stable, your ni L stable,
your freshman stable, Yeah, whichwill stable state? Not your staff?
Yeah? The the the del MarGroup will be unveiling some new uh new
(38:12):
runners here at del Mar Train trainedby two time Kentucky Derby winner and personal
friend Doug, who does not lovedoes he ever have a bad day when
he brings that bottle of tequila tothe show every time? But you know
what we do have a little bitof an issue with O'Neill. What do
you go? He came to ourshow last time and he was in a
(38:35):
great mood, as he always islate in the day, and uh,
he brought a bottle of tequila. He did brand new. They popped the
top, we all pour shots,we do the interview. He leaves top
back on the tequila with him.Yes, not okay, not okay,
Saturday. I will see him,he will get referenced. I may actually
(38:59):
just bring him the bottle and sayI heard that you were hurting for tequila.
You know that you couldn't even leavethe guys the bottle? Perfect?
Yeah, I mean who does that? Right? You go to a party,
you bring a bottle of booze, you pour a couple of drinks,
and then you leave with it.Well, what we're doing. He was
raised in Michigan until he moved herewhen he was ten. Now some people
don't know anything. He's not anOhio guy. No, not in Ohio,
(39:22):
Ohio, giving big difference. Welove your coach, Love you guys,
absolutely the greatest Mick Cronin ladies andgentlemen, there is nobody better UCLA
basketball and all its changes in machinationsis in the best possible hands. Let's
do it go Dodgers coach Roberts, good luck to you show. Toddy was
almost a red. He was disclose, but Cincinnati just didn't have the cash.
(39:45):
Lawyers. It's popping next Matt Croninreaction. Most definitely. We are
here until seven o'clock. It isa full four hour show at being the
All Star Break. Eric Winolda willjoin us next hour talk a whole lot
of soccer. David Vasse will bealong at seven p for All Star Break

(40:07):
twenty four PMS Summer tour is Friday. We are days awaye July nineteenth,
Rock and Bruise, El Segundo,Corner Main and Franklin McK cronin was there
last year, had a great time, could not make it this year.
Canine friendly is right as long asyou're a head coach of a power five
(40:30):
basketball squad. Pretty fascinating stuff, great stuff, especially off the year.
Well, certainly appreciate coach for comingin him, stopping by all the way
out here in Burbank, coming overfrom Westwood. Things looking great for the
bruant this upcoming season on a newfaces. The nil's taken off, the
finances have taken off, and theyhave got themselves a heck of a program.
(40:52):
We certainly appreciate him coming in,but we'd love to see on Friday.
Other coach in town, Eric Musselman, will join us on Friday while
we are out there, as willBrendan Rice, the former USC receiver now
Chargers rookie in is Balaklava. Hewill join us. And oh just added
live music. PBJ triol will beplaying live as they did last year.
(41:14):
So DJ Santana will sit this oneout and we will have live you and
who knows. I think Dave wesaid he was going to save that chip.
Apparently that's a chip that you haveto play for the Petross Money Summer
Tour. The excuse me, DJSantana chip is one that you cannot That
is a will you cannot repeatedly dropa bucket into and draw water. I
(41:35):
guess I'll build a playlist on iTunes. So the PBJ Trio will be there
to play live music and we havegot that was the Preston Smith. Matt's
daughters a fabulous fabulous musician. Thiswill be the third third summer tour that
she's played. I think she's donethe last two years in a row,
so that'll be a great boon. It's always a lot of fun to watch
her and her people perform along withthe show. It's really cool. I
(41:58):
mean, she was born the yearand I started doing this show. How
about that? So uh, Igot a Texas says this fine brought to
you by your so called Toyota dealers. We make it easy. So that's

and then Musselman Brendan, Rice,Gene Simon, maybe Vast on the telephone.
(42:24):
Probably I'd like to drink bourbon andshoot dice with Coach Cronin. I
think you could do that. CoachesSelect, Coaches Select. I'm picturing Kate's
handing Cronin a bag of sunflower seedsand a pack of tops baseball cards with
a tear in his eye, saying, Mick, you've done so much for
(42:45):
short legged people like me. Ido have self work. Mick is the
band. I know he's an employeeand not an alum of UCLA, but
it's kind of amazing to think thatCa and Cronin are cut from the same
cloth. Mix. Seems like aman of high character, not a whe
(43:07):
like Kim Taints. You know,I don't know why Kim Taints. Kim
has to take what Kim tates.Kate's booked that that was his. I
mean, geez, Timmy Cakes takinga break, Tim Kim taits. If
(43:29):
Cronin isn't too good for Standler, neither should you two fart boxes be I
saw like half of uncut Uncut Gemsand it was just too It's too uncomfortable.
It was just like one bad decisionafter another, one of them movies.
So you guys have a badass interviewwith Mick Cronin and then you ended
with Radiohead going Out. Might beone of the finest moment of great sports
(43:51):
talk history. Well done, boys, Take it easy, guys, All
right, Uh, don't get tooexcited. We have we We didn't have
a lot of shows last week, but it's still great sports talk. We
got four hours today, four hourstomorrow, four hours the next day,
and four hours after that today islonger as the same amount of time as
three of our five shows last weekput together. We had two hour and
a half and one one hour showlast week. P I was about to
(44:14):
get after you hose on. Thetext to Soa for the opening segments sounded
like it was going to be scheduledtalk and NonStop ad reads for the tour.
The damn Mick just got me sixto midnight on the upcoming Pony season

(44:59):
Tea and the tea that show halTOWNI loves in Dreams also part of our
summer tour. Here is a textfrom the six to six to one that
says Cronin ticks ass, Yes hedoes titches A sea bass chef Meditho.
The seasoning is in the seasoning, the chef is in you. Cronin is
(45:20):

your insurance company if you are involvedin an accident. Call the expert attorneys
at Sweet James or visit Sweet Jamesdot com. Hey, Pete, God
bless go. Cronin so happy he'sat my alma mater. The guy's the
right guy for the job to leadthe team. The Big Ten will be

And ELSI go know how much doesit cost us on a six to one
guard who averages four points a gameand has a helicopter Dad and an nil
(46:05):
deal seven point seven million with aboutsix of it guaranteed. Congratulations mc cronin,
Straight truth I'm a minor league basketballcoach. Now for that, Yeah,
(46:25):
said, he's got a board. How much money they have, what
they need to allocate? Per position? A little bit different. Great interview,
great execution. The only real fauxpas was fully functional employee Adam going
down there in an Oregon Ducks hat. And we should have seen that coming.
(46:46):
I should have told him to takeoff the hat. Coaches get a
little snooped about the hats. Theydon't like you repping their enemy. I'll
be honest. Although Dana Altman,I think is a friend of Mick Cronin's,
I am, I'm just trying tofigure out kind of like what the
deal with the hat is? Oh, that was one of their specialty uniforms.
No, no, the size.Am I just seeing something. It's
(47:08):
like four sizes too big. Boughtit online. It happens well, when
it doesn't fit, you just don'twear it. But is that like one
of the big hats. It's moresnugs sometimes than others. There is no
chance take off your head. Thereis no chance that any amount of hair
you grow would make that hat fityou. I mean, there's no way.
(47:30):
Let me see look at it.I'm gonna take your head, take
your head something. Let me dothe finger test with head and smith.
This is really damning. Yes,get in here you were going to be
I want to see how many fingersI could fit under. You know what
I'm saying. You can get yourwhole fist in there. You think so?
Yeah, you got the whole armup there. Doc, look at
(47:50):
this thing, all right, getup here, look at them, Look
at it. He's trying to likeput it on his head. Put your
hat on your head. Oh,Matt, all four fingers, And I
said, I was like, God, did I miss there's like a stylish
change or something. And then goahead do it to my hat. Oh
he's my god, I have asnapback on. Yeah, I got a
(48:12):
snap back on my head. Butlet me see. Let me put that
out. Look look that way, let's see. Look at what it looks
like from the back. Turn around? Whoa all right? Football, get
over here, No, no,no, come here. We got to
test this out. Now here's thereal test. Here's the test. I'm
gonna put my hat on him tosee if it looks like we run.
You know what I'm saying, right, like, okay, take your hat
off, put this one on it'sabout the same size. Yeah, and
(48:37):
then I'm going to put on theorgan hat and I hate organ. Oh
it's a great snug. I meanit fits beautiful. It's not even snug,
it's just it's a perfects You justlost a hat. You just lost
a hat. I can't say that'sa nice hat. It looks good on
your hat. It fits me beautiful. Yeah, it looks ridiculous. And
my head is like eight sizes thatthat it looks ridic Wow. He loves
(49:02):
that hat. It looks like oneof those big hats. Like I got
the big hat. We're the bighat family, right. We're going to
Disneyland and we're gonna walk down MainStreet. We're all wearing big hats.
I bought it online and six sizeis too big. Whatever, I'm gonna
wear it anyway. Petros buddy showwith big hat at him, what size
is it? Eight and a half? Well, those flex fits they make
in like large, extra large andsmall medium. That's got the wrong size.
(49:27):
It's one of those flex fits thatsays a lare exactly typically works,
but different brand. And we needyou know what we need. We need
to scent shit on the inside witha safety pin. What you need is
a seamstress. That's what you need. So old one so like the wind
Dad and Alive Guy is at theend of the show, so we'll do
the word number song, which isalso a protocol for a long show in
(49:51):
the very next segment. Thanks forlistening, and a big thank you to
Alex who brought Mick cronin on Alex. Thank you to UCLA Athletics and the
great Mick Cronan. Check that interviewout on the iHeartRadio app one Nalda it's
gonna join us this hour and thanksto Kim Tates, Kim Tates putting it
together and Kim Taints and Tim Cakes. It's one of our favorite people most
(50:13):
definitely hell of a team.
