Code KLAC went up to two hundred times your money,
stringing them players together with more or less Vienna on Christmas.
P good thank you, I know. Major Donnie Dunnigan was
the Marine's youngest ever drill instructor. He served three tours
in Nam, where he was wounded several times. He received
(03:07):
the Bronze Star three Purple Hearts, and during his entire
Marine Corse service, he never ever let anyone know that
he in fact was the voice of Disney's Bambie. WHOA
(03:27):
how about.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
That guys out there killing everything with napalm and he's.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Bambi exactly right. I'm Bambi. Don't be fooled by the
soft voice I had as a child. I'm a killing machine.
Colonel Trumpman made me.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
This giant black man next to me. He's Thumper. Wow,
that is pretty cool, right now. That is a great Vietnam.
Thank you, Thank you. I might be inspired to do
some Vietnam Christmas work tomorrow. We can do that great
fun fact, Matt, let's do it. I might be casualties
of war.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
Let's review it for a full hour, just all the
happy parts.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
That and platoon quick hits. Everybody something in this quick hitch,
Come make it quick, y'all. Oh yeah, still on TI
Oscar Hernandez watch. Maybe Tim Kates will have something on
it tonight on Spectrum sportsnet LA. We're gonna see if
(04:24):
he re signs with the Dodgers. Matt David Vasse has
Dodger Talk live from Dallas at seven the Deats and
don't forget I'm gonna cover it like a greaseful and
don't forget Tim Kats with an impactful Spectrum Sports net
LA appearance tonight for which he's quite prepared. So good luck,
uh gleaning all that information and I shouldn't be too hard.
(04:47):
And the Red Sox today traded for their top prospects
of the White Sox for Garrett Crotch.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
It pretty wicked awesome.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
Did it's coming to town? I know how to say crochet,
but it's crotch it, it's crotch it.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
As far as Wickinson as we discussed a little bit earlier.
They traded their first round pick from twenty three, their
first round pick in the draft earlier this year to
pick up Crotch. It Well, all the Dodgers had to
do was scratch out a check and to for a
bunch of money to get the snows Zella.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yeah, hey, tell old seamhead seamhead sports net to, I
know how to say the pitcher's names. Okay, Yeah, the
Lakers are thirteen and eleven. They're off until Friday when
they play in Minnesota. Yea versus the Timberwolves. James Worthy
will trade us net. The Clippers pretty much had the
same record. Well, they're fourteen and eleven, nobody's going They're
(05:41):
off until there is I mentioned that yesterday there is
a bit of a problem there at the into It Dome.
People aren't showing up. They're gonna play in Denver versus
House Nuggets. Right here. On a five seventy LA sports
Tylu said that Kawhi Leonard went through the same practice
he went through yesterday. You know, you're being obnoxious, Matt,
(06:04):
You're just being a You're right, I am, I'm sorry.
I mean it is time for some sports to and
you're making conversation here in town. It angers me. I'm sorry.
What about the Rams in Santa Clara on Thursday night
to take on the Niners. Now we're talking. Huh, they're
two and a half point underdog on the road. You
want to end the forty nine er season, Just go
ahead and win that game.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
Huh?
Speaker 2 (06:25):
Hi, Rams, go ahead, you win that game, and their
season's over. And he'll take the lower lip off of
Kyle Shanahan to match his lack of an upper lip.
The Chargers are eight and five. They're and home this
Sunday to Baker Mayfield. Baco and the Bucos are in
town to take on the Chargers, a three point home favorite.
Here was Jim, here's a way to get Matt to
(06:46):
stand at attention like a like a wedding. D h
here was Jim harbaught today. But how important it is
to forget what happened Sunday in Kansas City and get
locked in to host the Buccaneer.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
Big task, you know, big game, big game ahead And
Wednesday we're midweek.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
Uh, we're putting the putting the game playing together and
uh and then go out and practice it and uh,
but you know mindset wise, I would just I would
just say that, you know, it's to make today, you know,
the best best practice of the year. You know, drills,
the best drills we've had walk through, Make that the
(07:28):
best walk through of the season. Meetings, make those the
best of the season. That's our that's our goal. That's
our mindset for today.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
That's right, that's the best. That's the best walkthrough we've
ever done, exactly right, and where everybody was locked in
with their mental reps. And I think that was awesome.
That's good stuff, Matt, that's really good stuff.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
So you win games, man, and you know each week
the Jim Harbaugh Presser has brought you by babbeln Instone
l change only a fifteen minute oil change, no appointment needed,
Stay in your car service with locations throughout southern California.
Find the location near you. It's sokel oil changed, and
you know what, make that oil change the best oil
change you've had. All right, do that while you're sitting
in your car. May well got up to them.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Make it the best. The Raiders owner Mark Davis said
today that he has been disappointed in how Antonio Pierce's
first full season has gone well they're two and a lot.
I guess what else are you gonna say? Yeah, I've
not don't what's gone? Well, I really feel like we're
building towards something. A lot of bright spots. Uh. Mark
Davis said that he won't be in a position to
(08:28):
make any full evaluation until after the season ends. He
also said he helps Tom Brady is part of football
decisions since he's part owner.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Okay, that'll be uh, that'll be interesting with our pal
Tommy Telesco, you know, hired to be the GM. What
if all of a sudden, you know, I'm hired to
build the roster. I'm the guy that drafted Brock Bauers,
who's leading all tight ends and receiving yards and should
be the rookie of the year, even though one of
the quarterbacks are going to win it. And now all
of a sudden, I don't get to make the personnel decisions.
(09:03):
It's it's Tommy Brady, It's TB twelve and his gruel
Shakes is the one that's now overruling me when it
comes to the draft and free agency.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Interesting to see how that not ideal? No, how that
works out. I was not hired to do that. Bill
Belichick is hired to be the head coach at the
University of North Carolina. He's bringing his son from the
University of Washington, reportedly to be the coach in waiting,
Steve Steve. I still don't believe it.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
I still just I've got to believe that It's put
the pressure on one of these teams, be it the
Bears or you know, all these interim coaches to just
give him a little backdoor. Hey man, we get you,
we get it.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
You want us going to North Carolina. They're signing a deal.
Come on and raise up. I believe it, Matt, I
just I can't chapel hill. Brother, I don't believe. I
can't believe it. Wrap your arms around it, kiss its face.
(10:12):
Ohio State Rep. Josh Williams introduced the oh Heel Sportsmanship
that the act would make it a felony offense to
plan a flag in the Cey, Ohio Stadium, a felony.
You thought you the pepper spray was a lot wait
till they tazed somebody two years. The bill would prohibit
(10:33):
planting a flagpole and flag in the center of the well.
It's not able to anyway because in the fieldter but
Ohio Stadium football field on the day of a college
football game, and you name it the Act Ohio Sportsmanship Act.
It specifically references Ohio Stadium, so it presumably would not
(10:56):
include flag planting incidents at other college stadium. Hey, we
can't say people want a little piece of that's what
the hell? What about Nippert What about the nip in
Cincinnati or the Bobcats.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
You know right, they just won their big conference championship.
Speaker 2 (11:11):
So I guess it's only Ohio state where you'd get tased.
This seems pretty stupid. This seems like a local politician
trying to endear himself to my drunk, punken headed Godus.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
No, not at all. This has got the greater good
in mind. You know this is I'm willing to take
the slings and arrows. I'm willing to wear it as
a representative for the betterment of society. Let's make this
a felony, as in, you could be arrested, incarcerated, have
a felony record by planting a flag after a spirited
(11:46):
football game. Because Ryan Day's butthole got so tight he
couldn't figure out how to coach a game with five
minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
How about win the game? Yeah, so you don't have
to worry about tasing your opponent after what happened, I
was right. Scott's Scott Saderfeld speaking at the Ohio Capital
this week. I'm here representing the fifty yard line at
the nip Okay. We got some college hoops UCLA eight
(12:20):
and one, two and oh in the Big ten. How
do you know that it says right here, Matt? And
what else do we know that Mick Cronin told us
yesterday for a million dollars, I knew you were going
to come out here and ask me about offense. Well, nope,
the very first question I asked was about defense. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
The non conference neutral site game on Saturday against Arizona
and Phoenix is and IL.
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Boys an IL game. It's an NIL game. It's call
it what it is.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
It's not about historic rivalries, it's not about maintaining our
relationship at the University of Arizona. This game is going
to make a lot of money and that's why we're
playing it and.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
You can listen to it without having to pay on
am FI seventy LA Sports Big Soccer News twenty twenty
six World Cup as we know going to be here
in the US, Canada and Mexico and North American World Cup.
And today FIFA, that fine upstanding body announced sycamore like
in its strength.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
The twenty thirty World Cup will be played across Morocco,
Portugal and Spain, with three one off matches held in
three South American countries. The twenty thirty four World Cup
was awarded to Saudi Arabia, Nice, Australia and Indonesia had
(13:35):
also been in talks over a joint bid for twenty
thirty four. That had been pretty cool, but they dropped
out because they're like, well, Saudis.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
You know, they got all that blood money.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
We obviously can't line the pockets of FIFA like Saudis can,
so whatever.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
They will.
Speaker 3 (13:53):
They were the only bid to host the World Cup
that year, a mere ten years from now.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
All right, Coming up next, Matt's favorite, the LA Basketball
pro Seed. Don't do it, Mataine maturity, Oh, come on,
maintain maturity. I can't. James Worthy coming up neck.
Speaker 3 (14:23):

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Selithon, you're joining us right now. One of our favorite people,
a hero of the city, and Bill Belichick will never
be as big of a hero to the people of
Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Never the Lakers, well, the last
time we talked to him, they were toiling, and since
(15:14):
then they got to win over the Trailblazers, So I
guess things are a little bit better. Emmy Award winner
sitting out there with Geeter and Bob Orie doing the
lord's work on Spectrum Sports Net and simply one of
the greatest Lakers of all time and a representative of
a time when NBA basketball was very pure to us
(15:37):
and they rode and commercial jets and ate hot dogs.
As James Worthy is offered toos, what's cracking James, how
are you, hey? Man?
Speaker 4 (15:47):
All good? Just trying to enjoy some of this time
off and reflecting on the Lakers and what's to come.
That's where we are.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
First and foremost was the win over Portland a little
bit of a I mean, obviously you got to win
that game, because if you don't, things are much worse.
But did you see anything there that made you feel
like the ship has been rided a little bit?
Speaker 4 (16:17):
Not really? I mean Portland was, you know, a team
that's not, like I said, They're not one of the
teams that we're concerned about. They're not, you know, they were,
they were limited. But what I did like was I
know that we have players on this team that can play.
I like the way the ball moved. I like the
(16:39):
way guys were aggressive. Ad was able to dominate, but
they were also able to get production from some other players.
The ball was moving very well, and so for that,
I hope that they're able to capture or recapture, you know,
some of the play that they were playing early are
(17:00):
going to see even though they weren't playing the dominant teams.
They got Minnesota and Mensu's coming up, so we'll see
if they have learned how to you know, get bats
to what they need to do and what needs to
be done on both ends for the court.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
I know, uh, don't want to focus too much on
the last game, or for that matter, a game two
games ago, but you know, your comments, I'm sure you know,
kind of made the rounds on social media. Obviously somebody
whose opinion means a lot to people. You're one of
the all time Laker greats. What I've got to believe
you've been on a team that it's just kind of
(17:36):
come out flat, But like what leads to a game
looking like that? Because along with kind of your postgame comments,
the other thing that made the rounds was the lack
of defensive rotations and guys just being flat footed against
the heat for like quarters on end. What is it
that goes into something like that one guys just don't
have it, Seemingly from the.
Speaker 4 (17:53):
Tip, I'm not accustomed to it. I am accustomed to
I am accustomed to shots not going in. Okay, I'm
I'm accustomed to things not going well on offense, but
I've never been accustomed to not have an effort on defense.
(18:17):
And obviously, obviously the first thing I see is a
lack of communications are maybe it's a misunderstanding of what
they're supposed to be doing. That's the only thing I
can come up to. I see guys putting their hands
up looking at one another when there's no rotation on
the backside, a lot of blaming, you know, what's going on.
(18:38):
So that and I know they practiced it, and you know,
so that's kind of weird to me. I don't, I don't.
I don't have a poult on that because I mean,
I mean, I mean, I hope that the locker room
and centergy is good. It seems to be there liking
one another. I don't, I don't see that. But I mean,
but something's not happening on the court, and I don't
(18:59):
know what that is. And that's that's that's kind of
weird to me. I've never seen flat footed, no rotation standing,
I don't know. As one game, somebody got a rebound
an opponent and I can't remember who it was. They
got a rebound right under the bucket and all they
had to do was put it back up and they
threw it back out to an open three. It was weird,
(19:21):
and the Lakers were just standing around. I don't. I
don't know what that frustration is. But I hope that
they've had some time off to think about it, because
the under the microscope and they will be examined for,
you know, every little thing.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
They do, now how much you know, and into his credit?
You know, when JJ Reddick did the post game, he
came out and said, it's embarrassing for me. I'm the coach.
This is my team, so I've got to figure out
what I'm doing wrong. You know, we kind of acknowledged that,
but he also put it on the players. He said,
I'm not the one out there they can call reds.
I'm not the one out there that can they can rotate,
(19:55):
they can they can give edfort kind of I'm sure
you saw it, James, you probably saw it when he
said it. What did you make of his reaction? And
kind of what have you made so far through twenty
some games of how JJ's coaching this team.
Speaker 4 (20:08):
Coaches will always take responsibility, you know, but coaches can't play.
That's why Phil Jackson never used to call time outs.
You guys figure it out, right, You guys figured it
out on you on your own. You're getting beat by
thirty five, don't look to me, you figured it out. So, yeah,
it's up to the players, you know, and and and
and a coach has to take the blame. He's the coach.
(20:30):
But he's giving them a plan they're not executing. I'm
sure he's not saying, look, on this particular play, we're
gonna fool him, wing onna rotate, We're just gonna see
what happens. He's not saying that. He's not saying that.
He's not saying, look, run as fast as you can
(20:54):
on the fast break. But getting back on defense, just
try it a little bit, say some energy. I don't
think he's saying that. So those are players responsibilities. And
obviously there's some frustration going on. I don't know what
it is, because when you're not getting back on defense
and when you're not, you know, rotating, this is frustration. Now.
(21:17):
I don't know what that is. And it happens. Teams
get frustrated sometimes. That's why they have team meetings and
closed door meetings stuff like that. They got to figure
it out. But they're better than that and like to
not be to not play defense. Look, you don't get
to get on the plane that night, you catch.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
The bus, get the white Castle Cale, they.
Speaker 4 (21:41):
Get the White Castles. That might have been too that
might have been too good. We maybe we have to
get away from White Castle. Those are good.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
We looked up the White Castle and there's only one
in Orlando, so they would have been about halfway there
if they stopped at Orlando. The Great James Worthy is
our guest and we love talking talking to him. Spectrum
Sports Net of course, Emmy Award winner and one of
the greatest lakers of all time. Uh, what is it like?
I know these guys travel differently, and the NBA is
(22:09):
a lot different than it used to be. But what
what is it like playing in the NBA this time
of year when it's the holidays and football is going on? Uh?
Does it? Does it feel like a slog or does
everybody still have fresh legs because the season started pretty recently.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
And you've got to be ready, you know, the holidays
is you know, that's that's high alert for you as
an athlete, you know you you I mean, I always
love being ready doing doing the holidays because I knew
I was gonna be on television and I know people
are home for the holidays watching me. I know, I
don't have an audience. So yeah, I mean there's no
(22:49):
downtime in the holidays is where you're you know, you're
you're your antennas are up for performance and entertaining people.
I mean, obviously you know you want to win games
and play as at tea, but yeah, the holidays have
made for athletes, and that's where you shine, and that's
where you have most of your energy. I mean you
(23:09):
might eat a little turkey. I eat a little bit
too much, but you know you get over that. You
know you're trying to, you know, perform and entertain and
you're gonna you know, chances are your own television sometime
and everybody's watching you. That's when you go That's when
you go for it.
Speaker 2 (23:26):
The Great Bill Belichick is now the head coach at
Beautiful Chapel Hill, your alma mater at UNC. Has he
called you yet worthy for some tips? What are your
thoughts about Belichick? While they're crazy North Carolina text chains
going wild that Mac Brown has been replaced by a
(23:46):
guy who's like two years younger than him. Bill Belichick,
your thoughts.
Speaker 4 (23:52):
And our football program is always trying to get better.
I don't know, maybe a few years ago we were
ranked in the top twenty. Yeah, yes, I mean I
mean for for Carolina to be ranked in the top twenty, Man,
I was like being ranked top one, number one to me.
But but I mean, I don't know, Man, you coached
(24:13):
in the NFL your whole life. There's a whole lot
of jobs in the NFL he could have taken. I
mean with portals, recruiting, you know, I don't know, it's
it's it's a different it's a different monster. Obviously with
his name and you know, his reputation, he'll draw a
(24:36):
lot of attention. Maybe maybe recruiting, but with with with
with portal now and players getting to you know, leave
and go. I think I think he's a coach. That's
he's been the GM and and president. Uh he controls everything.
(24:57):
I'm not sure if that's going to be the case
at the collegiate level where he has that kind of
control because players can they can come, they can leave,
and it's different. I'm happy that we got it because
look look at his recordic cool he's done. He might
be able to bring out the football program back to
a place where it needs to be or even elevated.
(25:19):
But I still know about professional coaches. Man going down
down to the collegiate, it's a different it's a different
piece of toast.
Speaker 3 (25:27):
Man when when look, it's a basketball school, it's one
of the great basketball blue bloods in the history of
the sport. But you could make a case, you know
that that of the greatest athletes to have ever come
out of the University of North Carolina. You know that
did ride in step with the great James Worthy and
the great Michael Jordan, is the great Lawrence Taylor? Who
(25:49):
was who was there? When when you were there, were
you no doubt? Were you friends with lt? Did you
guys hang out at all?
Speaker 2 (25:55):
Like? How what was the football program? Seemed like?
Speaker 4 (25:58):
How did people program something? Man? L LT Man, This
is a this is a joke. Man, This was like
freshman orientation. I'm not the sophomore and he's a he's
a senior, and that first week of school it's just
a parties for freshmen, that's all it is, basically. So
(26:20):
LT's in the dorm and he's standing by the elevator
and you know, you can imagine some little five six
kid freshman year. He's you know, he's got beer, he's
away from home, he's got his girlfriend on the elevator
and LT is standing by the elevator and when the
elevator opens, he's looking at these kids and he's saying,
(26:42):
I'm gonna give you a choice. I want you a
beer or your girl? Which one? And then and then
and then and they think he's kid and he's looking
at him with no smile on his face. He's like
beer or girl. So yeah, I mean el, I mean
LT was an amazing dude.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
Man.
Speaker 4 (27:01):
Also, we got May in New England. Now we've had
a lot of offensive linemen. We get players to go for,
but the school, you know, we we break that top twenty,
top twenty five every now and then. So we'll see,
if you know, if Belichick, you know, there's no question
(27:22):
he's coaching is second to none. Maybe he can get
saving to come up there and be an assistant coach
and there you go and they can bring it back.
Speaker 3 (27:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:31):
Well, we appreciate you Worthy. Maybe Saban will come and
maybe even Pete Carroll, who know. We appreciate your your
commentary as always, have a great week and we will

Buenos Diaz, Popin' taco. McCoy Tyner eighty five years old
today he would have been five Grammys, just to get
that out of way, because I know what you really
respect as awards.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
What are we doing if we're not working for awards
and recognition?
Speaker 2 (32:08):
What's the point. I want to go to lakeside and
I want to pick up an award and I want
to make an uncomfortable racist joke. That's exactly right. What
do you think, Garbo? Hey, by the way, how about
Steve Sacks and I got nominated for Best Talk Show Hosts?
What yeah, you guys better win for two weeks? Dude,
it was like a month. All right. I hope they
misspell your name on the trophy.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
You know what I want you to do and you
win it, And that did happen. They misspelled your name. Surprisingly,
they got mine right, I want you to thank the
Dan Patrick show.
Speaker 2 (32:41):
Oh for sure, you know, for sure, for so politely.
Speaker 3 (32:44):
And with dignity stepping aside to make way for scam.
Speaker 2 (32:48):
Oh. A lot of people that'll they'll eat that up.
Yeah they will, all right. Back to McCoy tyner. A
great jazz pianist, left handed, biggest musical influence listed by
Grateful Dead bassist or Grateful Dead excuse me, lead band
(33:08):
co lead Bob Weir, and a great looking guy. McCoy
tyner born in Philly, man I left a role with
McCoy His mother owned a beauty salon and she installed
a piano and urged him to play it. By fifteen,
(33:29):
he was like a professional musician like Preston Smith, like
he was exposed to bebop jazz and that scene because
he was friends with Bud Powell and Felonious Monk. As
a professional in Philadelphia, he started playing and this is
(33:54):
his most famous collaboration because he was also from Philly
and he knew him growing up with John Cole Train
and the John Coltrane Quartet. He is the piano on
Love Supreme, that album, My Favorite Things, that album Live
at the Village Vanguard not exactly a lightweight man. No
(34:18):
oh no, no no, and uh. While he was doing
that with Coltrane and touring NonStop, he recorded his own
albums with his own trio. Coltrane always wanted to have
McCoy Tyner on the keys because Tyner a minimalist, Coltrane
(34:39):
a ball dominant maximalist player like Pat summer All and
John Madden, Scotti, Pippen and Jordan. It's gotta be the Nuggets.
But they broke up in uh nineteen sixty five when
Coltrane started adding all kinds of weird stuff, like weird
(34:59):
as African instruments and stuff. They're like, nobody can hear
my piano, I'm out of here. A few brothers, many
albums as a band leader, all pretty good, and you
can leave him on too. I saw him a few
times live and always loved it. It's always cool to
see you.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
He toured until into the twenty tens. Tyner became a
mad de young sect of a Islam guy. I love
that sect. Yeah, but he never changed his name, but well,
it's cool. He did change his name, but he didn't.
At one point he was married, He had three sons
and divorced His brother, Jarvis Tyner, is the former chair
(35:42):
of the United States Communist Party, a certified red Well,
there's a different time, you know, brother still alive. He's
still a pretty huge comedy. Yeah, yeah, different.
Speaker 3 (35:56):
I think the Commies are better for me, you know,
I don't what they're doing to me here as an
African American in Philadelphia. I mean, why is Tony Bruno
considered to be so much better than me? I'm Jarvis Tyner.
I don't know why you got a Bruno man, But
quite Tyer Man, You're a live guy. It is the season.
(36:16):
Tis this season, and God bless Brenda for still being alive.
Happy eightieth Brenda May Tarpley, Brendaly. You know the song.
You may think of it as a Christmas tune that
comes on the coast somewhere around October fifteenth, or maybe
if you are of a certain age considerably younger, you
(36:38):
tie it to the iconic home alone moment where Kevin
is built the train carrying the short cutout intimating.
Speaker 2 (36:45):
Yeah, great Christmas moment. You know, you got Daniel Stern and.
Speaker 3 (36:50):
Joe Peshi out there thinking there's a party going on
in that dining room while this song is playing. Brenda
Lee born in Atlanta, family incredibly poor, shared not a
room but a bed with her two siblings, growing up
in a two room house without running water, but devout
Baptists and Brenda would get her start singing in the church,
(37:14):
and while they did not have running water, they did
have a battery powered radio that mom and dad said.
Brenda was fascinated with and began mimicing, right, what else
you gonna do? Stare at the hole in the ground
that you're crapping in?
Speaker 2 (37:27):
Shut it.
Speaker 3 (37:28):
Started singing when she was only three, perfect pitch. They'd
go into town at the local candy store, she would
stand on the table and sing for coins. Five years old,
she wents first place in the school's talent show, singing
take Me Out to the Ballgame. That caught the attention
of the local radio and TV stations. Her father's dead,
she's eight. Next thing you know, she's the only income
the family has a regular on Atlanta's TV ranch. Her
(37:53):
big break was sort of calculated, sort of luck. She
wanted to skip an already booked thirty dollars TV appearing
about three hundred and fifty bucks in today's dollars, to
beg her mother to take her see Red Foley, who
brought his Osar Jubilee to a Gusta that night.
Speaker 2 (38:08):
I love the Osar Jubilee.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
And while Mom was like, oof, we could really use
that money, she acquiesced and gave the family's breadwinner the
opportunity to go see Read Foley. A local DJ and
Augusta recognized her and he told Red, you got to
hear this girl sing. So Red agreed, and before the
show officially started, as sort of a warm up for
(38:32):
the crowd, she performed Jambalaya John Baliyah. From that moment,
this is what Foley said, quote, I still get chills
thinking about the first time I heard that voice. One
foot started patent rhythm as though she was stopping out
a prairie fire, but not another muscle in that little body,
even as much as twitched. And when she did that
(38:53):
trick of breaking her voice, it jarred me out of
my trance enough to realize I'd forgotten to get off
the stage. There I stood. But after twenty six years
of supposedly learning how to conduct myself in front of
an audience, with my mouth open two miles wide and
a glassy stare in my eyes.
Speaker 2 (39:09):
I'm calling Bs on the two miles.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
A month later, she made her Ozark Jubilee debut at
ten years old. A year later she was a Decca artist,
four foot nine. They called her Little mis Dynamite. The
rockabilly sound lit up the country and pop charts, and
of course Rocking Around the Christmas Tree was the biggest.
She was only thirteen years old when she recorded it.
Johnny Marx had written Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer for
gene Autry, Holly Jolly Christmas for Burrol Lives and said,
(39:34):
this song I wrote for you.
Speaker 4 (39:36):
Brenda.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
Hey knew she had to sing it even though she
was only thirteen. It still shows up today on the
Hot one hundred this time of year. This one I'm
Sorry was her other number one.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
She was I'm Sorry. She was only fifteen and somewhere like, Eh, hey, Matt,
you know what it could be worse if it happened today,
she'd be deeply sexualized by seventeen, married off to Puff
Daddy or spare jay Z. Now it was very similar. Pee.
Speaker 3 (40:09):
She was already in a relationship when this song came out,
and did get married at sixteen, had two kids. But hey,
stayed married till her husband passed away. Oh okay, so
you know I fit the year marriage there.
Speaker 2 (40:21):
That's okay, then, jay Z, you're cool. That's right, You're good.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
I know.
Speaker 3 (40:24):
Beyonce was only like twelve, but whatever, still married. She
wrote that Lemonade song. She was a superstar throughout Europe,
especially the UK. She played the Royal Variety performance Befort
Queen Elizabeth the II.
Speaker 2 (40:39):
She was on he haw Well, he haw Right and
TV Ranch.
Speaker 3 (40:43):
And tv Ranch Country Music Hall of Fame in two thousand,
Happy eightieth Brenda Lee.
Speaker 2 (40:50):
All right, now, that was the lad Brenda Lee and
her frail old body was all that was standing between
you and Dodger Talk. Another glorious hour of celebration of
the world champion Dodgers. And they're endlessly bottomless pockets to
pick up players. Yeah, we're the best. So enjoy that, everybody.
(41:13):
Enjoy your evening. David Vassey coming up next on m
FI seventy l A Sports your home of the world
champion Dodgers.
