Appreciate being here.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
I'm the Herd. You heard your nerd.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Now we're gonna talk Lebron James in just a second.
But I saw the the Vegas odds for the top
five AFC teams to represent represent Zen in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Okay, do you agree with this top five?
Speaker 3 (02:10):
I'll read it. I'll read it to you. Can you
do it in countdown form like Spider Harrison. I'll do
my best, Rick Dy, Spider Harrison and Casey Casem Kimbang.
If you're gonna do a top five countdown. You gotta
do it like a pop radio superstar.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Spider Harrison, Casey Caseam. In case you don't know.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
By the way, Rich Davis is the guy on Pop two,
k on SXM, and I am the guy on Turbo
and all that other stuff. We combine and joined forces
to do this show. Pretty sweet side hustles. Yeah, alright,
So I'll give you the top five AFC teams coming
in at number five, Las Vegas number five, the Jets
(02:49):
at plus eight fifty. Okay, number four, they're Houston Texans
coming in at number four plus eight hundred, Cincinnati Bengals
plus seven to fifty, beals with a bullet. As we
move up the countdown, the Baltimore Ravens at plus five.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Fifty and we made it to the top. Of course, the.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Kansas City Chiefs at plus three fifty. Is there a
team outside the top five that you're like, hell, they
forgotten them, So you got Kansas City, Baltimore, Bengals, Texans, Jets.
Is there a little disrespect on the name of the
Buffalo Bills. I'm just amazed that on everybody's sort of list,
(03:40):
because there's so many question marks there. You're really banking
on Aaron Rodgers to be the man, and I understand,
you know they've been picked to win it all. Keep
him on kiving. No, they had Aaron Rodgers, you know,
last four plays. But then you say yesterday the Jets
are gonna jet the team around the Jets. They're not
jetting anymore on the Jets around Aaron Rodgers. Last year
(04:02):
was good. I think they made improvements and he is
actually going to play this year. He should knock on wood.
So I don't hate the Jets being in the top five.
In fact, where were your forty nine ers?
Speaker 4 (04:11):
Again?
Speaker 3 (04:11):
This is THEFC, oh AFC, okay AFC top five forty
niners would be number one in the NFC. I imagine Jets, Jets, Houston, Cincy, Baltimore,
Kansas City.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
The only.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Abbey is if you have faith in Buffalo or Miami
and you think that we're sleeping on Mike McDaniel. But
Danny g pointed out yesterday a lot of defensive setbacks
on the Dolphins. They lost a couple key players to
free agency. And the Buffalo Bills. You wonder if Josh
Allen has enough weapons and if that team is you know,
(04:49):
did they lose? Did they miss their little window of opportunity.
But at this point, the Bills are more proven than
the Jets are, so you'd think the Bills would be
at five and the Jets would be at six. Speaking of,
they do have the number one trash talker in the league,
Josh Allen.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
Yeah, so you're.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
Telling me I was voted as the number one best trash.
Speaker 3 (05:11):
Talker coming in and number one trash talker Josh Allen,
let's go.
Speaker 5 (05:15):
That's Josh Allen tweeted that out a couple hours ago. Yeah,
we talked about that. You know what, I don't hate
the list, so we can move on to Lebron. But
I saw that come across the TV screen. I'm like,
you know what, Casey of course, Baltimore. Of course, NFL
is uh high five, high fiving themselves from making that
your kickoff game. Your your two most favorite teams in
(05:37):
the AFC play a week from tomorrow. So congratulations NFL
for just you know, striking gold again.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yeah, I'm not mad at this.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
So Kansas City, Baltimore, Cincinnati with Joe Burrow. That's I mean,
these are those are your top three. We've talked about
those quarterbacks being three of the four current best. Right
then you got Houston, who was coming off a really
hot year with CEJ Stroud, And I've heard people argue
that they take a step back, and then I've heard
other people say that they're gonna win twelve plus games.
(06:08):
So what No one really knows. That's a funny part
about sports talk radio and TV. I mean, that's the
part that drives me crazy, like no one's got a
crystal ball. I mean, the funny part is when you
see the outtakes years later of you know, people's terrible
hot takes that are as cold as ice. Who knows
what the Texans are gonna do. If they went twelve
(06:28):
and five and CJ. Stroud lit it up, he'd be like, yeah,
I get it. If they went eight to nine and
took a step back and he threw, you know, got
a little exposed through more interceptions, you wouldn't be terribly
shocked either, because that division got better.
Speaker 5 (06:41):
The Texans had a great offseason, So I'm not sure
how they take a step back.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
CJ.
Speaker 5 (06:46):
Stroud would have to fall on his face.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
I know people are like, what if you know the
typical well, what if they have what if people are
studying the tape on him and they find the holes
in his game and expose them, you know, the typical.
Speaker 5 (06:56):
And nobody's talking about their defense. Lamp that defense in
the playoffs.
Speaker 3 (06:59):
And you know how we were talking about the top
four quarterbacks in the league yesterday, Who's the number five?
Who's the number five? The top four are obvious, Who's
the number five? Got a lot of feedback over a
lot of people backing up Danny g with c J.
Stroud too, like, dude, it's him, it's him, he's him,
and we'll see. And you know how I feel about
Demiko Ryans. I think he's a hell of a coach.
(07:22):
I love him. I love him.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
I know, I think Demiko Ryans is great. So I
think I think though I.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
Think they got the top five right, I think Buffalo
could say disrespect other than Buffalo's that's sort of I
think where we all stand. Or if you're a Jacksonville fan,
I don't know many of them, but you could say
no in a hold up. Now, Trevor Lawrence signed that
big contract. It's time for him to prove why he
was considered a generational guy that just has, as you said,
(07:49):
match statistically to I know Colin does those blind comparisons.
The fact that Garner Minshew and Trevor Lawrence have the
same stat line over the last couple of seasons, that's
got to change if Trevor Lawrence wants to, you know,
be the guy that everyone thinks he could be.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
So yeah, Danny J.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Does that fire you up as a Raiders guy that
they're not even in the mix here? Well, I mean
that's not expected. Yeah, but does that make you excited? Like, well, hey,
I hope they prove everybody wrong.
Speaker 6 (08:16):
No.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
At the big white meeting table in the blue kitchen
here at Fox Sports Radio, we were having our pre
show meeting. Yeah, and two and music were not surprised
to see Nick Wright on the big screen picking the
Raiders last in the AFC West. And then it was
my friend Chris Brussard's turn to go, and he picked
the Raiders last in the sid.
Speaker 7 (08:36):
You know.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
And I told those guys if bulletin boards were still
a thing, if I'm Antonio Pearis, I just put that
up for the team to see.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah, you know, Tom Brady, Yeah, let's time motivate Tom Brady.
I love that he did admit that they would take
those things that they would hear on sports TV or
radio and make it bulletin board material.
Speaker 5 (08:56):
Yeah, I've never seen a bulletin board before. I know,
you know, I will say, and our Grandpap you had, Danny.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
It's hard to It's hard to argue though, with that division,
with everyone being so high on Jim Harball and you
know what Trump, Payton and bow Nicks looks like that
they could put together in Denver, but you know, in
the right direction. I'm intrigued about your Raiders because you're right,
they do have a good defense. They're fun to watch,
you know, Antonio Piercedy get that team fired. Raiders this
(09:23):
because there's a lot of teams that stink and I'm
not watching them.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
The Raiders.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
They're projected to not be that good, but they're fun
to watch. The still right, Like, I still watch the Raiders.
I'm tuning in the They have a very talented squad.
They lack depth, so if any of the starters go down,
that's where they get into the weeds a little bit.
But the thing about the Chargers, people are basing their
predictions on Harbaugh.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Not sure.
Speaker 5 (09:45):
Yeah, I'm not sure if he has the right personnel yet.
But he's going to get there. And one thing that
was really interesting is the teams got down to fifty
three yesterday. The Chargers kept seven wide receivers, which made
people kind of look twice because, as you were saying,
yesterday's show rich people expect him to run the ball
a lot, but the Chargers keeping seven receivers kind of
(10:07):
leans towards maybe they're gonna throw the ball one.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Those are your top five and the AFC hey tooy music.
Any any of you guys watch A Receiver on Netflix?
I thought it was fantastic. Did you watch just briefly
they start? I haven't finished it. DeVante Adams struck me
as so generally unhappy in Las Vegas, and there were
times where it was like, you know, towards the end,
(10:31):
like I get a different story. It was a different
story with Pearce its the QB situation.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Oh he did not. I know he was not. He
did not. He didn't show.
Speaker 3 (10:41):
There's two ways look at it. Oh he's very unhappy
or he cared a lot. So he didn't like Garoppolo,
you could tell. And I don't even think he liked
Aidan O'Connell. You were like, no, they liked him. I
think he was just like yo, I went from Aaron
Rodgers to this.
Speaker 8 (10:55):
Yeah, I Danny knows, as he said we were about
it earlier.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
The Raiders thing is tough.
Speaker 8 (11:04):
It's it does not look like a great situation for success.
And yeah, when you're a guy like Davante Adams who's
like done it all and wants to continue to add
to his resume, I'm I know. He mostly moved to
Las Vegas for personal reasons. He wanted to be more
towards like the West Coast. Him and Derek Carr were boys.
(11:24):
But as soon as they got rid of Derek Carr,
I think he was left looking around, going he how
did I end up here?
Speaker 3 (11:30):
It's like it's like you move, you relocate. I mean,
it's just not football. Nobody wants to move back how
many time nationally or in life. Richie always like to
bring relationships into this. It's like going from a ten
that you're happy with, there's sixth that you're unsure about.
But I mean like it, I think everyone's been there personally,
where you might move to a city or move to
a different town for your job and then boss changes,
(11:51):
you get let go. There's budget cuts and you're like,
all right, now, now I'm living in Cincinnati or caught,
Why am I here like you? And I think Devanta Adams,
even though Vegas is cool, he's got a new kid,
he's happy. I think if Gardner Minshew doesn't get him
the ball, and he didn't even like how Jimmy Groppo
was passing them the ball in like unsafe situations, I
(12:13):
throw the ball behind them, exposing him to get hit hard.
I think if Gardner Minshew delivers, he'll be happy. Otherwise,
I don't know how it happens. But you've seen the
rumors about he'll end up with Aaron in New York.
I don't know how that happens. Maybe you get something.
Speaker 5 (12:24):
The rumors started because of comments Aaron Rodgers has said
and put out there.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
I can't wait to play again with him, right.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
And also, people watched the first few episodes of Receiver
took that and ran without finishing it, because if you
finish the Netflix series, you see, okay, he really loves
playing for Antonio Pierce, as do all the Raiders, and
he says, I was born to be a Raider. Look
at my school year pictures in elementary school fits with
the Raiders Jersey. He was born to be a Raider.
(12:52):
So if Minshew can just be a serviceable quarterback, hit
the intermediate routes and get out of the way. Let
the receivers and the tight ends do the work for you, maybe.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Your Raiders will be in the top six.
Speaker 5 (13:05):
Then maybe nobody's gonna put them there. But like you said,
a few minutes these things happen, Yeah, use that as
fire light a fire under your team six.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
If all these things happened, they might be They might
be like there were twelve, but the raid if that
defense steps up the Raiders. It did make me think
of something else when I was watching Receiver. You saw
when DeVante Adams had the birthday party for the kid
at the house and some of the other parents like
who is he? I was fund of funny because I
went to back to School night with my wife last
(13:37):
night of our kids elementary school, you know as a
like open house parent teacher the school year started was
Thornton Mellon there. Back to school a good one. Do
you think parents fake it when there's a celebrity or
athlete at school, like pretending they don't know them? Or
do you like or or do you think a lot
of times, like if you're if you're a teacher and
(13:57):
you have Devanta Adams kid in your classes, all it's
possible because they're in helmets and uniforms all the time.
But you know they're massive and big, so they're probably somebody.
But I do believe that some of these parents don't
know who he is.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
What does he do?
Speaker 3 (14:13):
He's obviously a professional athlete, right they see him.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
But I do believe that I saw people before and
we're like, who is this guy? But I didn't recognize
him outside of the uniform.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
I saw Kim Kardashian post like, I can't believe my
kids in first grade. I'm thinking, there's no way any
teacher in that school is not like that's Kim kny.
Speaker 5 (14:33):
But they're on a different level of pop culture fame. Well,
I would say the difference with DeVante Adams. He's in
Taco Bell commercials. He's got a Taco Bell in his house. No,
I do love a good Gordia crunch.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Well, hey, that's I just want to bring that up
because do I pretend you just treat them like normal people.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
I don't pretend.
Speaker 3 (14:51):
Every once in a while you'll see somebody famous here
in Los Angeles, and.
Speaker 5 (14:55):
You know freaked out when you saw mister T. Yeah, Rich,
you were the guy that I was sitting pumped about it.
I was sitting in a diner two weeks ago my
wife on a Friday morning. Mister t clubver Lang himself
rolls up into Mortz, which is a little it's like
a diner in Tarzana, California, and me he.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Doesn't have like a lifetime supply mister tea cereal.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
But he's like, hey, I'll have a scribbled egg sandwich, fool.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
And I'm like something to have to come from.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
And I said, I thought he petered a fool that
didn't need a serious I said, mister t Legend, hey
have a good day, man. And he's like and I
was like cluver Lang in the flesh.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
He was so kind. He's like, you made my day.
No one bothered mister T. I didn't bother him. I
just said hi.
Speaker 9 (15:35):
I mean, as you know, I teach Joka spot Spot.
I once had Jennifer Lawrence come in to take my class.
But she pervium like conditioning her. She's but no, but
she's like an A list actress. She used a fake
name when she came in, So I had to pretend
the entire time like, oh, high Barbara, I don't know
who you are, and I can't acknowledge who you are,
(15:56):
but you're taking my class. It's like the most recognizable
actors right now. Jennifer Lawrence is Guys, I thought it
was Joey Lawrence. You look like, Oh, that's pretty funny.
That's funny, man, that is funny. All right, So thank
you guys for hanging out with us. That's your top five.
We gotta talk Lebron. It basically goes like this. Think
(16:20):
about it. He said that he doesn't want to be
called Dad on the court. Take a listen.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
Can I call me dad in the workplace?
Speaker 4 (16:28):
All right?
Speaker 6 (16:28):
Once we once we leave out of the private facility
and the gates closed, I could be Dad again in
the car, if we ride together at home, I could
be Dad. No, he gotta call me like two three
or bron. Okay, you know, go if you want to.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
That's up to him.
Speaker 4 (16:45):
I mean, it's up to him.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
We have some thoughts, share yours on that too. Again
A seven seven forty four three four three seven seven
seven for the herd. Well, we'll do that next your
thoughts on Dad ak Lebron next right here on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
One More Heard. The Herd streams twenty four hours a day,
seven days a week. Within the iHeartRadio app, Search Herd
to listen live or on demand whenever you like.
Speaker 10 (17:11):
Back here on the Herd, Let's get our NFL Network
insider Ian Rapaport into the building. You could see Ian
on NFL Networks The Insider weeknights at seven pm Eastern.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
Ian, how are you man?
Speaker 7 (17:24):
I'm good man, How are you?
Speaker 10 (17:25):
I'm excellent. Everybody should know. I was at Chargers camp.
I brought my kids and Ian Rappaport of course, is
like on the field, and he comes over to say
what's up, and guys wanted his autograph. He's this is
how big of a deal Rapaport is. He's a great guy.
Speaker 7 (17:38):
All right, you know I appreciate that.
Speaker 11 (17:40):
Now.
Speaker 7 (17:40):
Yeah, it was good seeing you and good meeting your son.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
Yeah, yeah, thank you.
Speaker 10 (17:44):
Now let's move on. And Jacoby Brissett is officially the starter.
I kind of crushed your Rod Mayo earlier. He's been
all over the place this week. Drake may is our
second best quarterback. He's outperformed Jacoby Brissett. We're gonna name
Brissette the starter. It just feels like amateur hour.
Speaker 7 (17:59):
Well, I would say a lot goes into the decision,
and it's much more than just like, all right, who's
the best quarterback? Right, because you know, the Patriots draft
may not for this year, but for the next fifteen years,
and so the only thing that really matters, with all
due respect to the Patriots season this year, the only
thing that really matters is do they set him up
(18:19):
for success for the next decade? And putting him out
there with an offensive line that is, you know, a
work in progress at best, I don't think helps Drake.
Speaker 4 (18:28):
May at all.
Speaker 7 (18:29):
So to me, gerrod Meyer is saying like he's our
best quarterback or he's played the best or whatever it is, Like,
that's a good thing, that's what you want. They drafts
him to be the franchise guy, but that doesn't necessarily
mean he's ready to be out there against some of
the best defensive coordinators in the NFL from the opening,
you know, opening with so it just means they're very
(18:49):
confident what they have for the future. So I actually, like,
I think it's the right decision. I think it's a
smart decision and you know, whatever has been said, I
think they did it well today.
Speaker 10 (19:00):
Okay, the forty nine Ers and John Lynch sound a
little exasperated with the Brandon Ayuk situation. And oh, by
the way, Trent Williams is not in the building yet.
I know you're not looking at Vegas lines all the time,
or maybe you are, but forty nine Ers Jets has
gone from six and a half to three and a half. Respected,
big money coming in on the Jets. I think people
are starting to wonder, Holy call, Trent Williams's even gonna
(19:21):
play in the opener. We saw them ean last year
without Trent look abysmal for a three game stretch. You
go without Ayuk and Trent to start the season, not good.
I say, it's panic time for San Fran What say you?
Speaker 7 (19:34):
Yeah, I think there was a time last year and
if I remember correctly, it was no debo and no
Trent was yes I think and yeah, no, it's like
addicted team. I mean, look, you know, we could talk
all we want about Brandon Ayuk, and we have for
sure talked about him plenty this offseason, more than I
could ever imagine anyone talking about Brandon Ayuk in any offseason. Yeah,
(19:57):
he is a very good player. Trent Williams is one
of their best players, might be their best player. That
is a massive deal. And you know, if you say
to me, you know, could any player absine contract extension
hold out into the season, he would for sure be
on the list. He is stubborn, he has principled, he
(20:17):
has made a lot of money and he means business.
So without the right deal, something that he thinks is
the right deal, for sure, we can see him sit
out to start the regular season.
Speaker 10 (20:28):
And now that's also not good for Brock Purdy, who listen,
He's just not going to be as good without the
best left tackle in football, right, I mean.
Speaker 2 (20:36):
I don't think.
Speaker 7 (20:36):
I think the whole thing won't be as good, you know,
like the whole team. But that's you know, look, players
have leverage right now, some players think they have leverage,
and some players really do, like for instance, a Son
Reddick has stayed.
Speaker 12 (20:51):
Away from the Jets assuming that they will say, okay, fine,
on fine, we'll just give me the extension you want,
and the Jets have not budged no. And you know, look,
if they can't rush the pastor in the first if
he missed his games and they can't rush the pastor
in the first couple of games, then maybe.
Speaker 7 (21:06):
He his leverage increases. Otherwise, they have sort of said like,
we'll see you when we see h You know, I
would say for Trent Williams, he has real leverage. Brandon Ayuk,
we'll find out.
Speaker 10 (21:20):
Yeah, interesting situation here a week to the season and
some big names not signed. H let me go, let
me chas us out A big, big hot take for you.
So Deshaun Watson, I saw they restructured his deal again.
Now we know they gave him massive, massive money. Okay,
I gotta be honest.
Speaker 2 (21:38):
I don't know.
Speaker 10 (21:38):
This is year three for him. He's had some injuries.
When he's been out there, he hasn't looked great in
the Stefanski offense. Meanwhile, Stefanski looked great with Joe Flacco.
You know, this is a little bit of a hot take.
What are the chances Deshaun Watson is playing for his
job for next season? And maybe we've seen some teams
like Denver take on the huge dead money of Ussell Wilson.
(22:01):
Is there a world where you can envision the Brown saying, hey, Deshaun,
if they say, if you're not the guy this year,
we're going to move off to you, or were you
gonna draft somebody and you're gonna be the backup.
Speaker 7 (22:11):
I would be very, very very surprised by that. I think,
you know, the main thing I would look at is,
you know, last year, his last game, he let a
fourth quarter comeback with a high ankle sprain and a
shoulder that they found out later and.
Speaker 4 (22:25):
The night was broken.
Speaker 7 (22:29):
That's pretty good, and I think that to Shaun Watson
that we saw in his last game was the guy
that they had hoped to see all along. Now, there
were you know, there was a multitude of the issues.
There was, you know, a shoulder injury. There was some
arm strength issues because of a shoulder injury that wasn't
either wasn't properly diagnosed or wasn't taken a serious leave
by all parties that needed to be or whatever it was.
(22:51):
It was just there was a couple of injuries and
it wasn't handled great by anyone, and then obviously the
you know, then shoulder knocked him out for the season.
But I think when he's been healthy, you know, he
has definitely shown signs of being the guy that you know,
the Browns trading for and gave all that money to.
I would also say for the quarterback contract as always happened,
(23:14):
you know, the you know he's making in the mid forties.
You know, obviously it was huge when it happened. That
has gone far down the list of quarterback salaries as
each quarterback gets a little more money.
Speaker 2 (23:25):
That's a good point.
Speaker 10 (23:26):
Let me go to the Chiefs defend two time defending champs.
Everybody's excited for Patrick Mahomes and the new receivers. Nobody
seems to be talking about their tackle situation.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
Ian.
Speaker 10 (23:36):
It looks like the second round kid from BYU's going
to start at left tackle and Juwan Taylor's gonna started
at right tackle. And he was an unmitigated disaster last year.
So the last time we saw Mahomes without two tackles
was in the Super Bowl against the Buccaneers and it
was open season on Mahomes. Are people overlooking this tackle
situation in casey.
Speaker 4 (23:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (23:57):
Probably, you know, I think it's a real thing now.
I mean I would say this like, I think if
Juwan Taylor plays as good as he can play, just
talent wise and since of he's fine, But here's the
thing with Patrick Mahomes. When you have him, it allows
you to do basically whatever you want, like really whatever
you want.
Speaker 4 (24:17):
I mean, it allowed them.
Speaker 7 (24:18):
Last year to take a receiving group that was up
and down and in and out and all over the place,
and you know, he probably got as much production out
of those guys as you could ever imagine, right I mean,
and you know, look, I mean Rashi Rice is sort
of a different situation. He's obviously very talented, but there's
not a ton of those guys that would be great
players on other teams, But he's Patrick Mahomes and he
(24:41):
makes everybody better. I would say the same to the
tackle situation. But you know, just like we talked about
for the forty nine ers, like you know, if you
have an offensive line that is not functioning properly, it
makes like very very challenging.
Speaker 10 (24:54):
Yeah, we could wrap up with the La Chargers. Ian Listen,
I know that Herbert was in a walking boot for
a minute. What's the latest. Can they run the Greg
Roman offense the way they want it to with Herbert
not one hundred percent? Or is he one hundred percent?
According to your sources?
Speaker 7 (25:12):
I think he'll be one hundred percent, but that that's
a really tricky injury, you know, I mean, that's the
kind of thing but like you could play with it,
but I'm not sure how come toable he'll be for
a while. It's just it just lingers and it just
it actually just really sucks that injury, you know, like
planter fash is not not fun. So I don't know
if right away he'll be exactly like we sort of think.
(25:35):
And he also missed a lot of training camp time.
So you say to me, like, you know, could you
see the Chargers starting slow? Like, to me, that makes
some sense. Now, like by the second half of the year,
will they be among the better teams in football? I
think there's a real chance. But there's a couple of
things that sort of lead me to think that they
could be a team that starts slow knowing that they
(25:56):
have the talent to, you know, figure it out along
the way.
Speaker 10 (26:01):
By the way, if I said Lions over the Jets
in the Super Bowl, after you your laughter subsided, you
would say what.
Speaker 7 (26:09):
I mean, if if I didn't know anything about the
history of those places, I would say, talent wise on
the field, that is as good a guess as any
you know. I mean I think, you know, It's like
I got a whole bunch of friends who are Jets fans, like,
what do you think?
Speaker 4 (26:24):
What do you think?
Speaker 7 (26:25):
I'm like, I think the same thing about last year.
If Von Rodgers is healthy, it's one of the better
teams in the NFL. If he's not healthy, then the
back to the drawing board, you know. And then for
the Lions, I would say, you know, just as good,
maybe a little bit better than last year. You should
be in a really good place.
Speaker 10 (26:42):
Ian Rapaport, NFL Network insider and good human being. Ian,
thanks for your time, man, and good luck this season.
Speaker 7 (26:48):
Thank you man, always great hanging out with you.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
Take care. Be sure to catch live editions of The
Herd Weekdays and Neon Easter not a Empacific.
Speaker 13 (26:56):
Pauly Fools go here with Tony Fools go ya as
everybody knows, one of the whole to the award winning
Paul Antoni Fusco Show. Yeah, but instead of us telling
you how great we are, here's how Dan Packrick described
us when he came on our show.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated, what are you doing interrupting
our promo? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (27:14):
He wasn't talking about you. You took those clips totally
out of context.
Speaker 13 (27:18):
Oh yeah, well after this promo, I'm gonna take you
out and beat you.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
Let me put this into context. Shut up. Yeah.
Speaker 13 (27:25):
Anyway, just listen to the Paully Antoni Fusco Show on iHeartRadio,
Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.
Speaker 4 (27:31):
Yee.
Speaker 11 (27:34):
Petros Papadakis has covered college football since he finished up
at USC as a star, and of course you'll see
him on PMS, which is afternoons here on five seventy
am in Los Angeles. He is a football savant. He
works for Fox and he joins US now in the Herd.
Biggest takeaway watching CEU survive North Dakota State last.
Speaker 4 (27:54):
Night, Well, I can't say I wasn't rooting for the Bison.
I have a lot of respect for North Dakota State football,
as we all do, but they are an FCS program.
A couple of years ago, Doug I did a North
Dakota State at Arizona game and Arizona was just in
the midst of starting their turnaround against the Jed against
(28:18):
North Dakota State with Jed Fish and it was kind
of a similar trajectory in the game, North Dakota State
had trouble with the perimeter guys, and obviously they had
trouble with Travis Hunter and Shador and it kind of
played out from there. A couple of things happened here
or there. Maybe they win that game, but it played
(28:40):
out kind of like I thought it would and be
on lists to fight another day without a loss. And
it was about last year around mid October. I think
that we kind of detached from the Colorado story at
least as far as thinking that they were good. And
it's kind of like the combine or that sort of
(29:03):
stuff with some programs, some players, some people. The further
they get away from the field, the more interest is generated.
But once the game start, the equity just really isn't there,
which is wins and losses. The crazy thing about Colorado
is they create all this equity for everybody without ever
proven that they can win. So we'll see how it
(29:27):
shakes out of the Rocky Mountain showdown in the other games.
But it was an entertaining game, no doubt about that.
But I had to watch it on mute.
Speaker 11 (29:35):
I'm with you, Yeah, what is the deal do they do?
They bring announcers in and said like, okay, this is
going to be like we've all done games where we
know who's watching and we know to kind of play
to that audience, right, but it takes a step to
the like there's a lot more going on that we're
(29:55):
talking about. I just it's really interesting on how that
thing is covered.
Speaker 4 (30:00):
Yeah, and uh, it's it. Look, it's I started calling
college football games where if you mentioned gambling, you get
fired or at least yelled at, you know what I mean.
So a lot has changed over the years. And again
that's that's I'd never call a game like that guy ever.
So and that's been long before Deion Sanders even thought
(30:24):
about coaching. So I've never liked the announcer and he
really leaned into it, and I don't like it. But whatever,
you know, I'm a forty seven year old white guy.
Don't one cares what I say.
Speaker 11 (30:37):
I I agree, but I think there's a lot more
guys like us that love college football that are watching
that game that were like, what are we what are
we doing here?
Speaker 7 (30:46):
All right?
Speaker 11 (30:47):
Clemson? The grand experiment for Clemson is we're not going
to do the portal. Everybody else is doing the portal.
We're not going to do the portal. They're the beautiful woman. Okay,
who everybody else is doing? Botoks You're like, nope, we're
going all not you all does it work this year?
Speaker 4 (31:05):
Well, don't forget air Force and Army and they don't
work the portal either, which is interesting. You know, we
talk about Colorado football all the time and they don't
win games. Air Force wins nine ten games a year
right there in Colorado with no nil, no red shirts,
(31:26):
no graduates, no transfers, no portal, no anything, and just
a bunch of stocky dudes that like to run the
triple option. It's kind of funny.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
You know.
Speaker 4 (31:36):
I'm kind of with Dabo when it comes to what
he said to that guy in Spartanburg that called in
and he got all mad at last year and the
coaches call in show and now he's not going to
take calls this year. If you heard that? What was
Clumson football before Davo Sweeney made it? Kind of pseudo
(31:57):
sec program that has the nation's attention year and in,
year out and won a bunch of titles and has
become relevant. I mean, what are they?
Speaker 11 (32:08):
Uh no, they were they were a man, we were
good that one year in the eighties. We'll do anything
to get it back to be in the eighties. And
and they were.
Speaker 4 (32:16):
They were.
Speaker 11 (32:17):
They were a second to third tier program. Second tier program.
Speaker 4 (32:21):
Well, they certainly weren't going to be asked about, you know,
on a national radio show. You know, like they just
they weren't that kind of program. They were they were
regionally popular. They had a great rivalry every year with
South Carolina, and that was kind of that. There was
some really nice details about Clemson football and Pat Conroy's
Prince of Tide, and we went on from there. Dabo
(32:41):
Sweeney's made him relevant and it kind of goes into
that world where you know, Lebron has done whatever he
wants because he can and he's proven he can do
whatever he wants. You know, a tani can do whatever
he wants. Let him have his dog out on the
field and pick up the baseball and run around and
smile and dance and in the sun. You know, these
guys are so relevant, they're so huge, They've proven so
(33:05):
much and made so much money for so many people
that if they say, hey, I'm not going to work
the portal, no one can say anything. You know, I
think the best college football teams still, whether or not
they have a few transfer guys or not, the best
teams in college football are the ones that developed together
and recruit out of high school and that's kind of
(33:26):
the base of their greatness. As we saw what Michigan
did last year with Jim Harbaugh. That wasn't some crazy
transfer laden team or a bunch of five star recruits.
They were just people that grew together, that were well coached,
that had a great purpose, and obviously talented. But they
weren't the most talented team in the country. So I
(33:46):
don't know if it works perfectly, but I don't think
it's the worst thing in the world to try. I
think it's a little bit shortsighted to say we're not
going to do this at all, you know what I mean.
But I still think the way to victory is bringing
in your own people and developing your own people.
Speaker 11 (34:04):
Oh, I don't think there's any question. I mean, like, look,
if you look at Purdue last year, right, they had
one guy out of the portal. I know it's basketball,
but they did. You mentioned college football, and I think
what we're seeing at SC and we're seeing at Colorado
is the pitfalls of the portal, right. It just is
because because one, there's only so much money you can spend.
(34:25):
It costs more money to go get guys outside of
your outside of your locker room than inside. And there's
you do you run out of money. So if you
go in SC you spend a bunch of money in
a quarterback and on a wide receiver, you don't have
a defense, right, Whereas if you build from inside, you
can make up for a lack of talent with cohesion.
You can make players totally understand the system. You can
(34:46):
make them playoffs.
Speaker 4 (34:47):
One.
Speaker 11 (34:48):
I think this is the best long term play. My
question is can they can they get to whether it's
this year with a ridiculously heard schedule or next year
where it actually plays out where there is there they're
back to being elite with homegrown players.
Speaker 4 (35:03):
Yeah, and you need patients and understanding and as you know,
any college football or basketball or anything program that works
at any level, as a university president and an AD
and a head coach that all work together. And if
that's not the case, then you don't have cohesion and
it's hard to have sustained success, you know. I think
(35:25):
about Oklahoma and Bob Stoops and how those people work
together for decades and created a really relevant thing. So yeah,
there's a lack of patients, and these people feel like, look,
I have to bring in as many ready players as
I possibly can, because if we're not ready and we
get beat, I'm the one that's going to get fired.
But I also will say this bring games nowadays in
(35:47):
the transfer era, when you get some of these teams,
you know, you talk to coaches, especially early in the season,
and they say things like, well, we got this guy
from this place and he's solid, he's going to be okay.
We got this guy from this place, and blah blah,
blah blah, and it's kind of like you plug in
and play. But then the game starts, and sometimes you
really don't know who that player is until the bullets
(36:08):
are real, and more often than not are a couple times,
you know, three or four weeks into the season that
guy that they said that they got from wherever who
was going to be okay, is not even on the
team anymore or not starting anymore. So it certainly adds
just this element of volatility that I think that we've
never seen the form of sport more like a JC style.
Speaker 11 (36:29):
Yeah, yeah, no, it's actually interestingly, people have asked me
about me doing the job. It's like I've coach AAU basketball.
This is it's not that big a change for me
because I haven't been coaching it in twenty years. Guys
have been doing it one year for twenty thirty forty years,
and now all of a sudden, you have this style.
It's very, very different and very off put into them.
Speaker 4 (36:50):
And I can understand that too, because you know, you're
negotiating with people twenty four to seven and that's not
the college sports model that I come from for sure.
Speaker 11 (37:02):
No, No, it's I mean people who truly don't understand,
like we agreed, that's what That's what Gundhy was getting at.
You know, a week and a half ago, it's like,
call me after the season, what do you call from
for now? There's no more money. Now it's all budget out.
I'll pay it out. We're good. You want more, get more?
Speaker 4 (37:19):
More? And more college football programs are hiring you know,
general manager types, you know, not just to deal with recruiting,
but just to kind of shuffle out the money and
figure out you know, who's getting won and make sure
they get paid, because we really are truly in the
wild West.
Speaker 11 (37:37):
Petris Papadigas joined us from AM five seventy. If it's
the show's called PMS, of course you can watch them
on weekends covering college football games for Fox Sports. You
played at SC. What is the status is SC? Is
in this place where okay, kayleb Williams is gone, But
now maybe this is more of a of a team.
But is that ensemble cast good enough to compete about
(37:58):
the Big ten?
Speaker 4 (37:59):
Well, let's not forget. You know that Caleb Williams, you know,
with or without the Big ten coming was seven and
seven and his last fourteen starts at SC. So they
had a great performance in a bowl game that Caleb
Williams didn't play in from the guy who's starting named
Miller bas And there is a school of thought where
people say Lincoln Riley is a great offensive mine and
(38:23):
maybe things just got a little too loose with all
the improvisational play year and in year out from Caleb
Williams in your offense doesn't really create an identity. Your
identity is my god, let's hope this guy runs around
when the play breaks down and save us from ourselves.
And after a while. You know, it's like going to
(38:43):
the bars when you're twenty. Year one is great, your two,
you know, year three he starts to get a little threadbare,
So I would I'm I'm looking forward to seeing Lincoln
Riley call plays on time, you know, kind of like
he did with guys like Baker Mayfield a little bit more,
and structure the offense with a quarterback who's going to
kind of do what he says. Not that Kayla Williams
(39:04):
wasn't spectacular, but I don't think it's helped the overall
identity of the team. What us he needs to do
is what Michigan did or anybody else who has success,
or whenever USC has had success. This is recruit up
front and develop and be great there. I don't know
if they've done that, but they've certainly shored up their
defensive staff. They made Lincoln rally fire everybody, and he
(39:27):
hired three really good defensive coaches. Dun Bel from Houston,
who I like a lot, Matt Ans, who was the
head coach at North Dakota State last year. His team
just played last night, is just coaching linebackers. And then
Deanton Lynn, who was a great defensive coordinator for the
country's best defense last year at UCLA has come over
to SC so we'll see how that changes their identity.
(39:49):
I don't think they're going to get blown off the
field by Lsulsu's been given up thousands of rushing yards
in the Brian Kelly era, so I think it'll be
a good competitive game. But I think the physical advantage
is in. The identity advantages is with the Tigers.
Speaker 11 (40:04):
I would I would agree with you, p you the best.
Where are you at this weekend?
Speaker 4 (40:08):
I got Wyoming Arizona State. Interesting to see how Arizona
State will turn around after a bad year last year.
And Wyoming is a great, solid football program. I always
love watching that.
Speaker 11 (40:19):
Yeah, they it's it's at sun It's at Sun Devil Stadium.
That's always oh yeah.
Speaker 4 (40:23):
One hundred and six degree seven o'clock kick.
Speaker 11 (40:26):
Yeah, all right, well I can't wait to see it.
You're always great in the call.
Speaker 4 (40:30):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (40:30):
Phoenix is not about one easy, easy flight to get
to and not a great not a bad place to
get a beverage after after the game. Appreciate you, Junis,
You're doing great.
Speaker 4 (40:40):
You make what your your social media makes Wisconsin look
like paradise.
Speaker 11 (40:44):
Wisconsin is paradise in the summer. We just we'll just
we'll just have a lot of inside clips when we
get to the Winter Man.
Speaker 4 (40:51):
Looking forward to it.
Speaker 11 (40:53):
Talk to you soon. That's Petros Papadakis. Jonas here,
