Speaker 2 (00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio.

Speaker 1 (00:26):
Here we go, it's our two. It is a Tuesday.
Fresh off an impressive Dallas Cowboy win. Have their young
defensive players back. Quinn Williams looked like the all probably
was with Robert Sala. I'm telling you, man, it was
another escape from New York success story. It just shows

(00:47):
what a toxic work environment can do to athletes and employees.
Everybody's good when they leave. Donald succeeds when they leave.
Go look at Donald's numbers at Carolina, Minnesota and the Seahawks.
You'd be like, as a franchise guy, New York numbers
come right back down.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
So whatever, take your shots now, my friend, go ahead
and get.

Speaker 4 (01:08):
Them all in.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
I will say, in all the years I've been doing
hurt hierarchy, this there is the smallest gap from the
best team in the league to number ten the smallest
gap ever. I think the tenth best team could beat
the number one team.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
I don't have any doubt in my mind. That's what
we have.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
That's, by the way, what Adam Silver wants the NBA
to be. Like you just you're not sure who is
the best team. You think it's the last champion, and
then you get to the playoffs and they.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Get knocked out. I kind of feel that's what we
have right.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Now here we go are hurt, hierarchy, heard.

Speaker 5 (01:49):
Hierarchy, Now go. The top ten NFL teams according to
College number ten.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
I think arguably the most talented athletic team in the
league is Seattle and they'll put them at ten because
they have the most giveaways in the league. But they
were going for a game winning kick against the Rams
in LA and they had four picks. They have the
best point differential in the NFC. They don't have a
real gap in their team other than the giveaways. JSN
is the highest guided receiver according to PFF. They've allowed

(02:18):
the fewest sacks on offense. They got playmakers everywhere on
both sides of the ball. They can run it with power,
so if they get a lead, they can close out
the clock. They make too many mistakes, but they are
a great number ten team that was going for a
winning kick against the Rams on a day on the road.
They had four picks. Number ten Seattle, number nine again,

(02:39):
Kansas City.

Speaker 2 (02:40):
I like them.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
They have the second most efficient scoring offense behind the
Colts in pro football.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
They're not good on the road.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
They have struggled on the road because they're just not
talented enough.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Now that Chris Jones.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Is not playing at an elite level, the defense isn't
as intimidating. They're really good and they've got a good coach.
I don't think Mahomes right now is playing like Josh Allen.
But again, I like their weapons. I like their team.
If they beat Indy, I think they're a playoff team.
I think this weekend's a big deal. I'm a little
surprised they're a three point favorite. I guess the game's
at home, but I have Kansas City at nine.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Number eight.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
My coaching staff of the year in the NFL is
San Francisco. I don't know how Robert sala is doing it.
By the way, they're seven to zero when they hold
their opponents under twenty five. But Rock Perty George Kittle,
Christian McCaffrey, Jennings, here comes Ricky pearsall the fans back together,
and the old line has been better than I've given
it credit for. Again, they're a little Christian McCaffrey dependent.

(03:40):
Leads in yards, leads in carries, leads in catches, but
they're now healthy. They're dangerous, and I think their coaching
staff has been doing it with smoking mirrors and now
they've got like elite players.

Speaker 2 (03:53):
Back Number seven Buffalo.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Yeah, they drive me crazy, but I will say this.
They lead the NFL and off touchdowns and they average
six point three yards of play, which is second in
the NFL, and I think that matters a lot. Josh
Allen is playing at another level. Again, like San Francisco.
They can be one player dominant on offense. Don't trust

(04:16):
their defense. But I really believe in all the years
I've new and hurt hierarchy, the difference between Seattle and
the number one team is about four points.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
I'll put them at seven number six.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
I think the Colts would beat him if they played,
probably in Indy, maybe not in Buffalo, but against the
number one scoring offense, only team in the league scoring
on over fifty percent of their drives. They have the
fewest punts in the NFL. They're off a bye. I
think Kansas City's going to have their hands full. I
buy them now. Do I think Daniel Jones presents a ceiling. Absolutely,

(04:48):
We're not in January today. Right now, that's the top
six roster in the NFL. And I said it last year,
and I've said this about Cleveland. If you gave Cleveland
a good coach, go look at Cleveland's roster.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
They got dudes. They got a lot of dudes. Indies.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Roster is the elite, and now they're getting competent plus
quarterback play. Number five the Ravens when Lamar plays their
average in twenty nine a game four game winning streak
since the week seven. By listen, their defense now is
healthy and playing better. They have playmakers on both sides. Again,
this hurd hierarchy, we're doing it. It's November, it's not January.

(05:26):
Do I trust them then?

Speaker 3 (05:27):
No?

Speaker 1 (05:28):
Their next three games Jets, Bengals, Steelers, So the winning
streak is going to continue. Don't take too much out
of a close game against Cleveland.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
Number one. Cleveland's defense at.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Home is outrageous and it was a third straight road game.
I like this team a lot Baltimore five, number four,
but I think in a neutral field, I take the Patriots,
the only undefeated team on the road, three and one
against winning teams, an incredibly efficient team. Their defense in
nine straight games has held people to twenty three points
are under Vrabel deserves credit. He went and spent almost

(06:00):
three hundred million dollars in free agency, but he's spent
it on character guys, defense, tough guys, in physicality.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
They have an identity.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
They're a tough, physical team with a quarterback that's completing
seventy two percent of his throw efficiency wins post Thanksgiving
New England.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
Four number three. I don't know what to do with Philly.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
They're not good when Lane Johnson's out, but they are
twenty four and three in their last twenty seven games,
and they're just dynamite in one score games. What are
you gonna say? Here's the thing that I like about them.
They have the best interior D line in the league,
and it made a huge difference again this weekend against Detroit.
You can't get fourth and one on them. They bat
down passes constantly, opposing quarterbacks in the NFL complete fifty

(06:45):
six percent of their throws against Philadelphia, and it's because
they got good corners, active linebackers, and two studs on
the interior D line.

Speaker 2 (06:55):
Number two Denver, And.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
Again, what's the difference between Seattle and if they played
tomorrow a point and a half. That's how close this
thing is. Listen, six of their seven games have been
decided like the Kansas City game on a drive. Their
offense has been held the one touchdown in back to
back games. But I do believe, and I said it
last year with Kansas City.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
There is.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
There are teams that are good in close games. Kansas
City last year was great and close game. Denver this
year is great and close games. I don't think it's
like fumbles that it's random. It usually comes down to
an elite play designer and play caller and a quarterback
who's good late in games on final drive. That was
Mahomes last year. That's Bonix this year. But they are
a heavily penalized team, so they beat themselves. They've got almost,

(07:42):
you know, nine hundred penalty yards and they've trailed in
all eleven games.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
But you are what your record is. They're two, number
one The Rams are.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
The cleanest team in the league, second year in a row,
fewest penalties. They don't make any mistakes. They're Seattle without
the mistakes. They're Denver without the penalties. So I'm really
rewarding them. I don't think they're the most dynamic offense,
although I will say Devonte Adams is on a heater.
He is on a heater. He has become the touchdown guy,

(08:11):
not Puka. So I do think there is value in
the Rams not being as flashy or as a dynamic
as other teams. They don't get penalized, they don't turn
it over. You can't get the twenty seven points on them,
you can't get the twenty four points on him. That's
my top ten, and I think the difference between one
and eight, nine and ten is about four points, and

(08:35):
that's about it. I think it's really I got green
Bay at eleven. I mean it's I think green Bay
struggling with our identity. I have the Bears at twelve,
green Bay at eleven. Coin flip that they played tomorrow,
home team would win. Nick Right is joining us. First
things first, John, I mean you could say I'm selling

(08:56):
the chief stock.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
I'm not.

Speaker 4 (09:00):
You sold it in the offseason.

Speaker 6 (09:02):
You've declared this dynasty dead twice in the last three months,
and in the middle of that you declared them far
and away the best team in the league. So I
gotta tell you I'm not listen. I am not here
today to crow about the Chiefs. They have put me
in such a crisis that I'm rocking a ponytail on
your show because I'm in disarray with my team being

(09:25):
the nine seed and I'm looking at tiebreakers against the
Jags like a true poverty franchise when I'm used to
looking up paths to the one seed. So I'm not
in a good spot. And I was dead wrong about
the game last week. But you have been a fickle
beast when it comes to this Chiefs team this year and.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
The team you have.

Speaker 6 (09:47):
Number two, who again outplayed Kansas City, deserved to win,
they were better, But you have them as the number
two team in the league last week, weren't you trading
their quarterback?

Speaker 4 (10:00):
Like?

Speaker 6 (10:01):
Are you that down on bow Nicks a week ago
that he was maybe on his way out and now
he's the number They're the number two team in the league.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
I think this is what Adam Silver's NBA is, which
is there's about eight teams that could all if they're
healthy and got a call in a game six of
a series. This is what the NFL truly wants. They
don't want Kansas City and Belichick dominant Lee.

Speaker 2 (10:28):
It's all smushed in the middle.

Speaker 1 (10:30):
And I feel this way with college football outside of
Ohio State. And I mean, I think the Rams are
the cleanest good team in the league.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
But I wouldn't be shocked if they if they.

Speaker 1 (10:40):
Lost to Philly, Detroit, Seattle, if they played.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
Them again in the playoffs.

Speaker 6 (10:45):
So this is where I will agree with you more
so this year than any year honestly of mahomes whole career.
This you know, post Brady NFL, not post Brady Patriots era.
I think, Colin, you can credibly make a case for
maybe twelve teams could win the Super Bowl. I so

(11:08):
because the entirety of your hierarchy I think could win.
You can make a case, yeah, they can win the
Super Bowl. You certainly can include the Packers as a
team that can win the Super Bowl. And I know,
I listen, I know there's a team that's not even
snipping your top ten, that has seven wins and according
to some is the greatest coach quarterback Combo maybe in

(11:30):
NFL history. And the Chargers, so they obviously have got
you know, just Joe Alt comes back, the most important
player in the history of pro football, and they'd have
to be on there as well. But I agree with you.
I think a third of the league, like feels this morning,
they can win the championship.

Speaker 4 (11:47):
I agree with that.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
So you know, it's interesting with the Cowboys, I said
last night, in the last four years, I've had a
good year of betting football.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
But it's hard week to week, you don't know.

Speaker 1 (11:58):
But the one thing I really feel good about is
every year I go out and I give you two
teams that are going to be better than everybody thinks. So
this year it was New England and it was Seattle.
Last year it was Denver in Washington. The year before
it was I think I picked the Rams as everybody thought, rebuild,
and I'm like, no, McVeigh, Stafford, they don't rebuild. I

(12:20):
have said this if you're honest about Dallas. So last
night it's a prime example where their second round pick,
who's really good, came back, another kid came back. They
had all the kids playing in Quinn Williams, like, anybody
that leaves the Jets looked like great again. That's what
happens with everybody that leaves the Jets, including coaches. They
look competent. And I said, here's why I bought the

(12:43):
Cowboys talk. They stole George Pickens. Let's give Jerry credit.
That was a great move. He is a great Okay,
I got a quarterback, a running back, and ascending old
line full of kids. Weapons are fine. Don't love the coach.
But in a s where seven teams are desperate for
a quarterback going into the offseason, quarterback is always overdrafted.

Speaker 2 (13:07):
This year, no exception.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Dallas is one of the only teams the Rams the
other that has two first round picks and doesn't have
to draft the quarterback. Dallas could manipulate the heck out
of this draft. Move down, Move down, moved down. My
take is Dallas is not the Titans, the Jets, the Raiders.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
They're no. I am not that they're closer, though I.

Speaker 4 (13:29):
Totally agree with you.

Speaker 6 (13:30):
Okay, oh listen, I think that they are.

Speaker 4 (13:33):
If you're talking.

Speaker 6 (13:34):
About for next season, I think next season.

Speaker 4 (13:37):
They're an interesting team.

Speaker 6 (13:38):
I think this season the NFC is two good in
the middle for them to be able to claw their
way out of four or five and one just because
you as far as making the playoffs this year, I
believe that ship has sailed and you don't get the
Raiders every week. But I agree with you entirely that
this could be a very intrigue team next season in

(14:02):
what seems like it's going to perpetually be an underachieving
NFC East. Like I don't think that next year the
Giant are all of a sudden gonna be really good,
and I don't it doesn't feel to me like the
Commanders are nearly as close as people thought. Obviously, Philly
will be excellent. We would assume, you know, they have
the bones to be excellent every single year because of

(14:25):
what they've built there. The one caveat I would have
is thee Jerry. It's feels inevitable that the drama dejoure
of this offseason for Jerry will be the George Pickens negotiation.
And as talented as he is, I would have a

(14:46):
little bit of anxiety about giving that player real, long term.

Speaker 4 (14:51):
Guaranteed money because of his let's.

Speaker 6 (14:54):
Call it colorful history on being able to you know,
stay within the dotted lines. But no, I agree with
you that I think the Cowboys are probably closer for
next season than people give them credit. But I just
I think because of what the Bears and Niners are
doing as a fight for that final playoff spot, that

(15:15):
they don't have any real hope of getting back into
it this season. Like, I just think that's too far behind.

Speaker 1 (15:20):
You know, It's interesting about the Bears now that I
spend a lot of time in Chicago, there's almost there's
almost fear, like, ooh, the schedule, Oh, it gets really tough.
And I showed people, I said, their next five games,
they play five teams that don't know what they are offensively,
Packers twice, Eagles, Cleveland. I mean, these are good teams

(15:42):
and Pitts.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
Steelers, they don't.

Speaker 1 (15:44):
Chicago's flawed, but Nick second in the NFL in rush attempts,
second in rushing. They know exactly what they are. They're
a big playoffense, Number one, big play and they run
the heck out of the ball, So they're flawed. They
have too many penalties there, stop and start, But the
Bears don't.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
They have a.

Speaker 1 (16:03):
Real offensive identity. Packers don't, Eagles don't. Steelers don't, Cleveland doesn't.
I think they have a chance to win the division.
That's what I see.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
What do you use? How?

Speaker 4 (16:13):
Wow?

Speaker 6 (16:14):
So that's a that's a part commentary on the Bears,
but that's also a part indictment on the Lions and
the Packers to me, like it is saying that they
can win the division. So let me respond, I didn't
expect that because I thought, to me, Bears Bears fans
right now are just saying, can we please make the playoffs,

(16:37):
even though they're in first in the division. And I
do have to say I thought their win this Sunday
was one of the most I don't want to say
depressing wins, but needing a final drive magic to pull
one out of the fire against JJ McCarthy led Vikings

(16:57):
offense that could do nothing, and almost losing to them
in the same fashion as you did in Week one
would have been devastating. But they listen, Caleb's been clutched
late and so and even though he wasn't very good
over the course of that game, and seven and three,
to your point, is seven and three. I've gotta think,

(17:19):
Colin that the Lions will get it together and that
they won't look like they did against the Eagles against
many other teams. Now, I don't really believe in the Packers,
and I think the Packers game against the Giants it
felt like, man if Jackson Dart were healthy with the
Packers have lost that game. So I do think that

(17:41):
in the NFC, Philly and Tampa and the Rams are
obviously going to the playoffs. I believe Seattle is also,
I know they just lost this game is pretty obviously
going to the playoffs. It is really interesting to me
how the NFC North plus the Niners is gonna shakeout,

(18:04):
because it feels to me, with respect to the Panthers,
like there are three spots available for Lions, Packers, Bears,
and San Francisco. And San Francisco just seems like it's
already dealt with its injuries and they're still right in
the thick of it.

Speaker 2 (18:21):
So which, Oh, I think we lost Nick right?

Speaker 1 (18:29):
Uh, we'll try to get him back, Yeah, I I okay,
go finish it up.

Speaker 5 (18:34):
Nick.

Speaker 4 (18:35):
I don't know what happened. I'm just sorry.

Speaker 6 (18:38):
I was just saying, I don't which of the NFC
North teams is going to be left without a chair
right now? Given how they've played. I think Green Bay
is where my money would be, which would be so
disappointing to trade two first rounds for Micah and then
to win Week one the way they did if they

(18:58):
missed the playoffs, that's devastating.

Speaker 1 (19:00):
I want to end with an NBA thought. So, the
Lakers have new owners, and these new owners that took
over the Dodgers have moved off Manny Machado, Trade Turner,
Cody Bellinger, Corey Seeger. These are great players. I mean,
Seeger is the best Texas ranger. Trade Turner won the
National League Batting Crown. They moved off Zach Grinkey at

(19:23):
some point. Luca jj Reddick are the future, the coach
and the star. And Austin Reeves is Rob Polinka's find
So that you know GMS they want to validate their
choices and Austin's played.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
His butt off.

Speaker 1 (19:37):
How do you exit the Lebron business without offending rich
Paul Lebron, James his legacy. Because these new owners have
proven with the Dodgers they'll move off batting champs, elite
players at key positions. It is about a handful of
Bets Freeman Ota stars in their They don't want old stars,

(20:02):
they don't want people off injuries. How do you exit
the Lebron Laker situation with dignity for both.

Speaker 6 (20:10):
Well, listen, I think you are accelerating a process that's
going to come to a natural conclusion. So here is
So I just, you know, fundamentally disagree with the idea.
I'm not saying necessarily your idea, but the idea that
adding Lebron James to any team in the league somehow

(20:31):
could be bad, like that Lebron, who last year was
somewhere from the sixth to the ninth best player in
the whole sport, that dropping him on a team will
screw things up when he's been one of the most
malleable superstars in league history. And we saw him last
year as soon as Luca got there, he played off

(20:52):
the ball more and was excellent. So I think this
year this fit will work. Now, are they good enough
to beat the Thunder? Probably not? Is anybody? Probably not?
And then after this season, Colin, if he wants to
play another year, I think it's very on the board.

Speaker 4 (21:15):
That he does it.

Speaker 6 (21:16):
You know, maybe a final stop in Cleveland, maybe he
looks out east.

Speaker 4 (21:21):
If he wants to do a true farewell tour.

Speaker 6 (21:23):
But Lebron James is going to be a Laker this season.
I think that is pretty clear, and I think the
Lakers want him to be a Laker this season. As
good as they've been these first fourteen games, that team
we saw these fourteen games is.

Speaker 4 (21:40):
Not good enough to win the championship.

Speaker 6 (21:42):
I don't know that adding Lebron makes them good enough.
It probably doesn't, but it gives them a chance. And
without and that team can't win three rounds in the
West to get to the finals. We'll see if they
can with him. But I don't think it's going to
be a messy exit. I think Lebron's gonna play out
his contract as he has with every contract he's ever had, and.

Speaker 4 (22:04):
Then survey the landscape for the record.

Speaker 1 (22:07):
Just thirty seconds left, circling back when the Chiefs lose
to drop to five and five. What's it like to
be around Nick right in your house in New York?

Speaker 6 (22:18):
It's not great, Colin, It's uh, I mean it was Listen.

Speaker 4 (22:24):
I'm not a I'm not like an anger.

Speaker 6 (22:26):
I don't like yell at people or you know, like
you like take you know, hit the dog or something crazy.
But my wife and daughter see the life drain from.

Speaker 4 (22:37):
My eyes a bit.

Speaker 6 (22:41):
My wife, you know it's you know, I think is
maybe the next day more than she normally does, checking
our you know, joint banking account and like, oh, it's
a lot less than there was in there before. And
you know that I occasionally I shouldn't, but you know,

(23:04):
indulge in a loose cigarette or two. I you know,
so I'll tell you exactly what happened, and then I'll go.
When they picked up that second and six to get
it to the twenty yard line, I still to this
moment have not seen the field goal. When they picked
up that play, that last first down, I said, the.

Speaker 4 (23:26):
Chiefs just lost. I'll be back.

Speaker 6 (23:28):
I grabbed my dog, I grabbed seventy five cents out
of our little change thing. I walked down to the bodega.
I bought a lucy cigarette and I smoked it and
was very very and then I thought about all the
people I had to contact to tell them how I'm
going to make payment.

Speaker 4 (23:46):
That's what I thought. That's what I thought about.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
So that was it.

Speaker 4 (23:50):
But you know what, high high's low lows. I don't
do emotional hedges.

Speaker 6 (23:54):
I do the opposite, and I understand that the Chiefs
dynasty is dead and water and Patrick Mahomes is looking
up at bon Nicks. A lot of season left. A
lot of season left, is all I'm gonna say. Great
to see you.

Speaker 2 (24:08):
Colin Nick.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
Right, yeah, those listen. It was it was close like
last two years. All the Chiefs games, it's close. They
were just winning them last year and not this year.

Speaker 5 (24:20):
Live in Chicago to hurt, be sure to catch live
editions of The Herd weekdays and neon eastern nin am
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio FS one and the iHeartRadio app.

Speaker 7 (24:33):
Hey, we're Cavino and Rich Fox Sports Radio every day
five to seven pm Eastern. But here's the thing, we
never have enough time to get to everything we want
to get to.

Speaker 8 (24:42):
And that's why we have a brand new podcast called
over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in
our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly,
because this guy is over promising things we never have
time for. Yeah, you blubber lit lame and me.

Speaker 7 (24:56):
Well, you know what it's called over promise. You should
be good at it because you've been over promising women
for years.

Speaker 8 (25:01):
Well it's a Covino and Rich after show, and we
want you to be a part of it. We're gonna
be talking sports, of course, but we're also gonna talk
life and relationships. And if Rich and I are arguing
about something or we didn't have enough time, it will
continue on our after show called over Promised.

Speaker 7 (25:15):
Well, if you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make
sure you check out over Promise and also Uncensored by
the way, so maybe we'll go at it even.

Speaker 2 (25:21):
A little harder.

Speaker 7 (25:22):
It's gonna be the best after show podcast of all time.

Speaker 8 (25:25):
There you go, over Promising, and remember you could see
on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen Over Promised with
Cavino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or
wherever you get your podcasts.

Speaker 1 (25:42):
College basketball starting up, NBA, College football, where's Lane Kiffin
gonna go? A lot of things hanging in the balance.
It does feel like the NFL and college football outside
of maybe Ohio State, feels everybody is a field goal
away from beating everybody else at the top of the
NFL and college football food chains. Again, I think Ohio

(26:04):
State has become receiver. You. They're so explosive and their
defense is elite.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
They don't.

Speaker 1 (26:11):
It's it feels somewhere between a Saturday and a Sunday defense.
It's not an NFL defense, but they've got multiple guys
that can go. I mean, they could have two of
the top six picks on defense going to college football,
corner and a linebacker, and they look every part of it.

Speaker 2 (26:26):
J Mack with a news no turns. This is the
herd line news.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
All right, Colin, you love that Jalen hurts scuttle butt
in Philly's so much first hour. We found another one
for you, but it involves Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson.

Speaker 9 (26:42):
Listen.

Speaker 3 (26:43):
I know they're seven and three and on top the
NFC North, but according to your favorite media outlet, The Athletic,
an opposing defensive coach believes Caleb's style of play does
not work well with Ben Johnson's offensive style, adding he
believes john is frustrated with Caleb because he doesn't play
on time and is uncontrollable.

Speaker 9 (27:05):
Colin, I know, I know you're.

Speaker 3 (27:07):
Excited about Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson and the first
Place Bears. I'm just telling you right now, enjoy it
while it lasts, because this is not this is not
how it's going to end up. They're not going to
be first place this season, and this Ben Johnson Caleb
stuff is going to continue to percolate.

Speaker 5 (27:24):
Well.

Speaker 1 (27:24):
I think Ben Johnson, like a Shanahan, has a structure
that he wants his quarterback to play within, and there's
always been a little give and take on that is that.
You know, that's why he loves brock Purty because Brock
Purty comes at a reasonable price and is going to
do what Kyle says. But Kyle doesn't have any Super
Bowls right and has kind of had them in his

(27:45):
grasp and they and they in the fourth quarter and
they can't seal it. So I think this is a
position that a lot of coaches deal with. A lot
of offensive coaches have a certain structure, but they want
you to make Like I said that this weekend. Matt
Stafford is more play call reliant. If the initial play
doesn't work, he's not gonna move around and make something

(28:07):
happen like Josh Allen. Sam Darnold is less play call reliant.
He'll go to a second and third option athletically, but.

Speaker 2 (28:14):
You get more mistakes.

Speaker 1 (28:16):
So I think all these offensive coaches, it's a little
bit of. I mean, I think bo Nick should run more.
Sean Payton doesn't want him to run more. I think
he should. So I think when you get a quarterback
who is so gifted, this is the push and pull
of coaching them. It's not ideal. He will play out
of structure. I thought two weeks ago when he ran

(28:37):
for a touchdown to win at home, I thought there
were Cole Comet was open. He should have thrown the ball,
but they got a touchdown. So I just think this
is part and parcel to having a gifted athletic quarterback.

Speaker 3 (28:47):
So some of the more advanced stats. I know that
some of the counting stats look okay for Caleb, but
some of them more advanced stats, success rate EPA per play,
he's like below twenty five. Colin Caleb is not as
efficient as the seven and three record indicates.

Speaker 9 (29:04):
I do think at some point they'll have a.

Speaker 3 (29:05):
Wake up call. I don't know if it's this weekend.
Because it's Pittsburgh team.

Speaker 9 (29:08):
You know, I'm very low on them. I do like
the Bears here. I just think, just.

Speaker 3 (29:12):
Keep an eye on Caleb and Ben. I'm not saying
this could be McVeigh and Gough. Remember how McVeigh moved
off GoF and got the guy he wanted. But I
wonder if Ben, if this keeps up. You know, this
is first year, maybe second year, if it's still go.

Speaker 1 (29:26):
If you watch Ben Johnson's body language in games, he
gets frustrated. Yeah, I didn't think Mike McDonald was frustrated
with Sam Donald despite the four picks. That's not what
his body language said. He was running the place, he
was trying to make plays. It was, you know, a
third down, you gotta throw, you're behind the sticks, You're
not in a good space. I think you can see

(29:47):
Ben's frustration on a pretty regular basis with Caleb, and
I think that's totally fair. Watch the coach, watch his
body language. I thought Sean Payton three weeks ago his
body language was not great with I think the last
two weeks has been much better.

Speaker 9 (30:02):
Sent All right, let's move on to the New York Giants.

Speaker 3 (30:05):
Interesting report over the weekend from Jay Glazer. Obviously he's
plugged in with a lot of teams NFL Insider, and
there's speculation. I think you mentioned Lane Kiffin's name. I
think you mentioned Mike McCarthy. Well, Jay Glaser has an
as an interesting name. I haven't seen this out there anywhere.

Speaker 9 (30:21):
Take a listen.

Speaker 10 (30:23):
But also a name who started to really pop up.
We talked about the game earlier. Chris Sula. He was
the defensive coordinator for the Rams. But I'll tell you this,
of all the coaches that Sean McVay has kind of
pushed along to be a new head coach, the next
head coach, he's done more with Chrishula than all of
them come by.

Speaker 2 (30:41):
These two guys are best friends.

Speaker 10 (30:42):
They went to college together. But he lets him get
on everything where me may not have done that with
everybody else, he does with Schula. He thinks he's gonna
be a start.

Speaker 1 (30:50):
Yeah, I don't want to go again. Who's succeeded in
New York? Parcels, pat Riley Tibbs, Joe Tory, What, Tom?
What are they? Proven? Winning head coaches? Assistants go to
New York to die. Coordinators go to New York to die.
Tom Coughlin wanted BC, he wanted Jacksonville, he wanted New York.

Speaker 2 (31:15):
Joe Tory, Bill Parcells, I.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
Mean you, I mean even Reck Shaw, I mean I'm
sorry to me. New York is not Let's give another
coordinator a shot. It's too loud, it's there's too much pressure,
and they don't have a good enough team right now
to win on the margins.

Speaker 9 (31:34):
That's kind of an interesting take.

Speaker 3 (31:36):
My only thing is he's a defensive guy with McVeigh right,
if you want to pick from the McVeigh tree. What
makes the mcveighs so special is his offense.

Speaker 9 (31:44):
I know the defense is playing good this year.

Speaker 3 (31:46):
Do you think the Giants now maybe they say, hey,
we tried Daboll and offense didn't work. We need a
defense culture guy. This is a McVeigh culture guy with defense.

Speaker 1 (31:55):
Well, Raheem Morris and Brandon Staley did wonders with the Rams.

Speaker 9 (31:59):
Defense as head coaches had the head they do.

Speaker 1 (32:02):
Yeah, I mean I just first of all, your hit
rate on Rabel, Sean Payton and Jim Harwall, what's gonna
be one hundred percent? Nobody doubted they'd be good week one.
Your hit rate on Mike McCarthy will be one hundred percent.
That you will win games with Mike not saying super Bowls.
Mike McCarthy becomes a coach, you're gonna win nine plus games.

(32:23):
That's his history. If he has a serviceable B plus quarterback.
Your hit rate on coordinators winning at all is fifty percent.
Just do the math. Do the math. Mike McCarthy is
what wins in New York. Somebody that's been there. He's
dealt with meddling, Jerry Jones, the no ownership Packers, and
Aaron Rodgers.

Speaker 2 (32:43):
He's dealt with a lot of stuff.

Speaker 3 (32:45):
And the other problem is if you get a defensive
guy's ahead coach, Colin you know this, the offensive coinator's
got to be a hit. Well, guess what happens when
he's a hit, he goes and becomes a head coach. Right,
So as soon as he has a good year with Dart,
the OC is going to be out to a head
coaching job, and then you're starting all over.

Speaker 9 (33:00):
I'm sure Shul has done a great job. I just
don't know that's the direction I take it.

Speaker 3 (33:03):
Final story college football, big big signing at head coach. Yes,
the Virginia Tech Hokies. You know I went to Virginia
Tech for two years. They landed James Franklin, who was
recently cut loose by Penn State.

Speaker 9 (33:17):
Great holland for them. Oh that's an amazing hire.

Speaker 3 (33:20):
Now there's reports from you know some of my Virginia
Tech friends that Franklin was waiting to see if any
bigger jobs were interested in him, and that's why he
was stringing along.

Speaker 9 (33:29):
Virginia Tech finally said, yes, this has been in the
works for weeks.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
But what's interesting, Colin, he was due forty nine mill
from Penn State in his buyout, so he negotiated a
nine million dollar lump sum payment. So he gets nine
million dollars and goes and gets to coach. Now, listen,
you're a man, well renowned, everybody knows you. Colin, forty

(33:52):
nine million dollars to walk away, and he's instantly jumping
back to coaching. That is a little crazy. Forty nine
million dollars you could do a lot with. Okay, you
can retire, you can go buy islands. Why is he
going back into coaching?

Speaker 1 (34:06):
Because he's in his prime as a man and he
doesn't want a golf all day. I mean, when you're
in your prime, you want to work. We're workers.

Speaker 9 (34:15):
That's what went offered me forty nine million seat, See what,
I'll probably still want to work, you know everybody.

Speaker 1 (34:20):
I mean, I think again, it's it's I mean, James Franklin.
First of all, he recruits that area. So to him,
he looked at it and he's like, I'm not going
to coach West. He doesn't have any history there. He
doesn't want to go back to the South. Perhaps, nor
is he getting offers. His take is what's going to
be open? Well, this is probably I mean, this is
not a top ten job. Is it a top eighteen job,

(34:40):
top fifteen.

Speaker 9 (34:41):
To twenty five whatever. But here's the thing.

Speaker 3 (34:43):
He doesn't have to face all these top five teams
all the time.

Speaker 9 (34:46):
That's his only kryptonite. Franklin's a great coach.

Speaker 3 (34:49):
He just struggled against the elites right Ohio State, Michigan
like he struggled against them.

Speaker 9 (34:55):
So what he's going to be a home run in
Virginia Tech.

Speaker 3 (34:57):
I'll personally guarantee you they're in the playoff within three
or maybe I'll do a crazy, crazy bet, like shaving
something in the side of my head. But I would
say within three years, James Franklin is gonna have Virginia
Tech on the right path.

Speaker 1 (35:09):
They'll have NFL players. He's a great recruiter. Well, Penn,
did you watch Penn State play Indiana? Go watch the
second half of Penn State Indiana. Yet, dudes, that's all
his players. They dominated for most of the second half.
They dominated Indiana. Indiana went to Austin and dominated Oregon
for three hours. Penn State all those recruits from James Franklin,
they had a backup quarterback and they marched up and

(35:32):
down the field on Indiana. So whoever gets the Penn
State job, you're getting pros. They're Sunday guys all over
that roster.

Speaker 5 (35:40):
Oh yeah, J Mackle the news, Well that's the news,
and thanks for stopping by The Herd Line News one
more heard. The Herd streams twenty four hours a day,
seven days a week within the iHeartRadio app. Search Herd
to listen live or on demand whenever you like.

Speaker 9 (35:58):
Start your Saturday strong with Big Get Noon Saturday. There's
no margin for error for.

Speaker 3 (36:04):
The top ranked Ohio's date Buckeyes as they look during
name perfect against Rutgers. It all starts with Big Noon
kickoff at ten am Eastern. Then it's Rutgers Ohios date
only on Fox.

Speaker 1 (36:14):
So I was thinking about this, Jmax. So every Monday
I do Colin right, Colin wrong, and I've been I
had the Seahawks is a good team this year, New England.
My blazing five picks probably as hot as I've ever been.
You were five, and oh I was five and oh.
I was thinking during the break, what is the most
wrong I have been so far this year?

Speaker 2 (36:33):
Like, like, way off?

Speaker 3 (36:35):
Would you have the chiefs number one in the herd
hierarchy a few weeks ago?

Speaker 1 (36:38):
But that's that's week to week that I'm talking about
a big macro topic, all right. I think the most
wrong I've been was Shadoor Sanders. I thought Shadoor Sanders
was at worse a mid second round quarterback. I watched
him this weekend and he was fine. He wasn't very good,
but you know, he did a spin move I thought
was clever, and he threw a ball to the end

(37:00):
zone that could have been caught. It wasn't, but it
was a great throw.

Speaker 2 (37:03):
I think it was fine.

Speaker 1 (37:04):
What's interesting what I find, And it's really weird who
we pick and choose to be loyal to. Like there's
this group of people out there they really believe and
I'm not I mean, this is the conspiratorial nature of
the country. They really believe that there is a conspiracy
inside the building against him. So Kevin Stefanski needs to

(37:25):
win games. These are really good jobs. He's making seven
million a year, whatever he makes. Why would you conspire
to play a worse quarterback you want? I mean, I
think this is from people that have never made maybe
had a great job. When you have them, you don't
conspire against yourself. There's thirty two coaching jobs in the NFL.
They all pay like seven and a half million up.

(37:46):
You would never do anything to get in the way
of winning.

Speaker 7 (37:49):
Now.

Speaker 1 (37:49):
Coaches make mistakes, personnel mistakes, go. You never try to lose. Now,
there are times, if you have a early contract or
you're safe, you may say to yourself, you know, I
wouldn't mind getting the number one pick in a draft
to get Andrew luck Er. So I'm like, I get
that we're not going to play Peyton Manning those last
four games. Like I understand that sort of institutional, collective decision,

(38:13):
but just think about how ridiculous it is. Like I
watched Dylan Gabriel and over the last two to three
weeks he had stabilized the offense. He's not great, he's
not big, but he wasn't throwing picks multiple touchdown games
with that defense you're like, you know, Cleveland's not They're
a tough out.

Speaker 2 (38:29):
Especially at home.

Speaker 1 (38:30):
Yeah, and you watch Shaduur, and Schaduur does two things
that Dylan Gabriel doesn't. He runs backwards. Coaches not I
hate that, especially offensive coach. Yeah, Shaduur, that was a
I always say, when your college problem becomes your NFL problem,
it's just who you are. Like Shadour in college ran backwards.

(38:53):
Shadur in the NFL watching him runs backwards. It's who
he is. I've said this with Caleb Caleb body accuracy
college bears, two different coaches in college, two different coaches
in the pros. He's not that accurate, right, That's.

Speaker 2 (39:09):
Who he is.

Speaker 1 (39:10):
So he's got to be a big play guy and
have the right play caller in a run game.

Speaker 2 (39:14):
So, but it's so weird to.

Speaker 1 (39:16):
Me that people think that the NFL, all these gms
and coaches, they're all half the league is desperate for quarterbacks,
either the year of the draft or any year that
they all just kept passing on Shador.

Speaker 9 (39:30):
Well, it's weird.

Speaker 3 (39:31):
He wasn't great four of sixteen, yet he had a
drive at the end of the game Colin to maybe
tie it up and send it to overtime like he
did a couple of things. I'm definitely not defending him.
I think at one point he was two of fourteen.
But you know what on Sunday Night Football, Jared Goflin
thor stretch where he was one of fourteen. Yeah, it
can be tough. Okay, that's right. I'm not comparing Schador

(39:51):
to Goflain just yet. No, no, I'm the first half of
NFL actions.

Speaker 1 (39:54):
Yeh, no, no, no, no, I'm again. This is what we
do for a living. I'm not former against him. I
think when you get two speeding tickets over ninety in camp,
it's not ideal.

Speaker 2 (40:04):
Bad judgment.

Speaker 1 (40:05):
I think putting legendary in your draft room, don't that's
just bad judgment. By the way, intentionally bombing interviews bad judgment.
He's and by the way, running backwards bad judgment. He's
got a judgment issue. It's not a size issue. It's
not an arm strength issue. It's not I mean, those
aren't the issues. The kid has a series of series

(40:26):
of series of bad judgment, running backwards legendary speeding tickets.

Speaker 3 (40:32):
You know, if you want to guess what the spread
is for the Browns at the Raiders on Sunday.

Speaker 9 (40:39):
Let me call it up.

Speaker 1 (40:40):
Here, Cleveland at the Raiders, Raiders favored by two.

Speaker 3 (40:44):
Interesting, I'm seeing three to three and a half. I
would probably take the points there with Schdor. It's early,
we see if Schor is even starting. Could be Gabriel,
but given the concussion, usually the quarterbacks out the next week.

Speaker 2 (40:55):
But isn't it remarkable some of the stuff.

Speaker 1 (41:00):
I don't know what happened in America, And I think
maybe it's just the explosion of social media, and you
go on social media and everybody can find their weird
friend group. Like if you're a conspiracy theorist, then you're
going to find people that will amplify that your tribe.
You'll find your tribe on the internet and so. But
it's like, folks, coaches are not trying to pick the

(41:23):
quarterback that will be less successful for it.

Speaker 2 (41:26):
That's not the way it works.

Speaker 1 (41:27):
And when you watched what Dylan Gabriel does, you can
see why a coach would like it. He doesn't run backwards,
He stabilized the offense. He doesn't throw a lot of picks.
He gets rid of the ball quickly. Chadeur holds it
he runs backwards. His judgment isn't great, but I do
think he's got talent. But it's just the world we

(41:48):
live in now. It is cuckoo for Coco puffs, it's
wacka doo's all over the internet. And I don't think
it's just a small group of people.

Speaker 2 (41:56):
I think I think there's thirty percent.

Speaker 1 (41:58):
Of Browns fans think they're trying in too Rakscheedur's career.
What in the world, what kind of sense does that make?

Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant.
