Speaker 3 (00:59):
I'd be distracted extracurricular activities would come into play, and

Thank you, good to see you again.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Nice to see you too. We recently saw each other
in New York.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
I believe the the show it was for upfront, say
when you were you were about to present it and stuff,
and I was with my with my wife, who's very
proud of you. We were just talking about all the
wonderful talent that comes out of Pittsburgh.
Speaker 6 (04:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 10 (04:21):
I've known each other since I was I think I
was eleven and she was probably nine or something. Yeah,
it's really it's a long road that brings us back around.
Speaker 6 (04:31):
So it's nice to be reconnected.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
She always said, You've always been very talented. That's cool
to see you keep killing it.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Well, I want to talk to you about your new
show on NBC before US has play some more music.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yo a Mario Lopez.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
I've got Zachary Quinto on zoom with me from Brilliant Minds,
and congrats.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
On the new show.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
By the way, this this looks like a like a
different take on a medical drama rights.
Speaker 10 (04:53):
What's the premise, Well, it's based on a real life
doctor called Oliver Sacks, who was a world renowned, iconic
and iconoclastic neurologists. He worked in primarily twentieth century. He
died in twenty fifteen at the age of eighty three,
and so we used his life and his writing as
(05:15):
the springboard for this show. He was considered by the
New York Times the poet Laureate of medicine because he
wrote many, many books and case studies about his patients.
He was voraciously motivated by understanding who his patients were
and helping them find and preserve their dignity in the
(05:37):
face of diseases and disorders and injuries and conditions that
present them with adversities that may never resolve.
Speaker 6 (05:46):
So a lot of the cases on our show aren't fixable, right.
Speaker 10 (05:51):
These are cases that people are never going to necessarily
return to the normal that they might have been used to.
And so I think a huge part of our show
is exploring the idea of adaptation and evolution and how
do you still find purpose and joy and meaning in
life when your circumstances are irrevocably changed in a way
(06:17):
that many people.
Speaker 6 (06:18):
Would see as insurmountable.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
That is a fascinating premise, and I unfortunately know a
couple of people in the predicament where they've had to
sort of adjust their lifestyle in.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
General because there is no quote care.
Speaker 3 (06:33):
It's just a matter of treating it, adapting in the mindset.
And they're very positive people too, So I'm gonna tell
them to check this out. Brilliant Minds airs Monday's on NBC.
Let's take a break that I'm to have more was
Zachary Quinto in.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Just a moment more Mario Lopez coming up.
Speaker 3 (06:50):
Mario Lopez here talking about the new NBC show Brilliant
Minds with actress Zachary Quinto.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
And I remember when we spoke briefly last time two
you said the medical jargon was quite challenging.
Speaker 10 (07:00):
Yeah, there's a lot of there's a lot of complex language.
Speaker 6 (07:04):
But I love that child.
Speaker 10 (07:06):
That to me is something that I really and we
have a great team of advisors and consultants and doctors
and nurses who help us, you know, really lean into
the authenticity of those conversations and those scenarios on the show.
Speaker 6 (07:20):
So yes, it is uh.
Speaker 10 (07:22):
You know, when when playing a character for whom that
kind of language is second nature, and it becomes important
to be able to have a relationship to it where it.
Speaker 6 (07:31):
Can just roll off the tongue. Yeah, but I love
that challenge.
Speaker 10 (07:33):
I love language, and I love I love connecting to language,
and this show and this role have given me the
opportunity to do that all the time.
Speaker 6 (07:44):
So it's great.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Well, Brilliant Minds Aris Monday's on NBC, hold on zacharyah
to play more music. Mario Lopez here, And I was
after Zachary Quinto from the new show Brilliant Minds. And
in the trailer, uh, it shows you diving into the
Hudson River.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
Did you really do that?
Speaker 11 (07:59):
I did not, through the magic of television and special effects,
which I guess so many people have asked me if
I've actually swam in the Hudson River, So I guess
that's a you know, real.
Speaker 10 (08:11):
Kudos to our special scene because they made it look
pretty believable. But no, that was a very warm pool
in Toronto O nice good. Worry about the pollution of that,
that's for that matter. But all of he Sacks swam
in the Hudson on a regular basis, multiple times a week.
He lived on City Island in New York, and he
(08:33):
would go to the river and he would swim in
there almost every morning of life. So you know, every
aspect of the character that is actually uh true of
the real life person.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
Wow, very original, very original. I look forward to checking
it out. You can watch Brilliant minds mondays on NBCR.
I let's play some more music. You're on, Mario Lopez.
My guess is actor Zachary Quinto. Zach, what about the
Star Trek universe?
Speaker 2 (08:59):
We're going to see you spoking?
Speaker 6 (09:00):
I don't know.
Speaker 10 (09:01):
I don't think I'm the person to ask about that,
you know. I mean, it's interesting because it's been such
a powerful part of my experience creatively, professionally and personally.
My relationship with Leonard Nimoy, you know, was so profound.
Leonard and I met in two thousand and seven. We
needed the first movie, and we developed a very powerful
(09:22):
bond and friendship for the last decade of his life.
And I got to become incredibly close with his wife,
Susan Nimoy. And in a full circle moment, Susan Nimoy
actually stars on one of the episodes of Brilliant Mind.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
Oh wow, that's cool.
Speaker 10 (09:37):
Brought it up to the show because she was an
actress like thirty five years ago, and then you know,
you know, Mary, Leonard met Leonard and pursued many other
incredible aspects of her life, and acting kind of fell away,
and then after Leonard passed, she actually wrote and directed
and starred in a short film that was quite beautiful
and really bold and brave. And I watched it and
(10:01):
I thought, wow, like, you know, I learned this whole
other aspect of my friend who I'd known for so long.
Speaker 6 (10:06):
And then I saw how talented she was. And when
I read this.
Speaker 10 (10:09):
Episode of the show, it was so tied to the
story of her short film.
Speaker 6 (10:16):
The characters were so similar, their experiences were so similar.
Speaker 10 (10:18):
And I called our show under Michael Grassey, and I said, like,
I just want to put this out there. I don't
know if you'd be open to it, and I don't
know if she'd be open to it, but you know,
would you be interested in maybe considering Susan for this role?
And then I called Susan and said, I don't know
if you're into this or if you're even looking for
something like this, but would you be interested?
Speaker 6 (10:37):
You know? So, yeah, so Star Trek comes back around.
Speaker 10 (10:39):
Even though let me do with Star Trek right, it's
still like influencing my life.
Speaker 6 (10:43):
The ripples and so I have nothing but gratitude for
that experience.
Speaker 10 (10:47):
The creatively Spock is, you know, one of the most
iconic characters that I've played.
Speaker 6 (10:52):
And I would love to go back.
Speaker 10 (10:54):
You know, my friendship with Chris is Chris Pine is
something that existed before we did the movies and then
only deepened and continued as now. And I think all
of us would love to come back. But I don't know.
I don't know if there's an appetite for it. I
don't know if there's a I don't know, but we'll see.
So for me, it's like I would love it, and
(11:15):
I'm also entirely not attached to it, so I hope so,
but time will tell.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Thanks really tell. We'll put that out. That's a nice
little East rig that we get to see on your show. Though, well,
hold on, I got to take a break. We're gonna
wrap it up with Zachary Quinto in just a moment.
Speaker 9 (11:28):
You're the full interview now on with Mario donc more
Mario Lopez on the way.
Speaker 3 (11:33):
Mario Lopez, You're wrapping things up with today's guest, Zachary Quinto.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
And last question, Zach, I saw a video on IG
of you playing the banjo. Yeah, is that a recent
thing or no.
Speaker 10 (11:43):
I've been playing the banjo for I started playing the
banjo twelve years ago.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Twelve years So you and Steve Martin.
Speaker 6 (11:50):
Well, Steve Martin is a huge inspiration for me.
Speaker 10 (11:53):
I've always been an enormous admirer of his work and
felt some kind of just connect to him.
Speaker 6 (12:01):
And I don't know. And the banjo, yeah, I always
love the sound of it.
Speaker 10 (12:06):
And you know, I was about to start the second
season of American Horse Story and I thought, you know.
Speaker 6 (12:11):
I need a hobby. I need something to do on set.
You know, when you're on.
Speaker 10 (12:15):
Set, there's so many hours of downtime, and I needed
something that I could pick up and put down. It's
hard for me to kind of immerse myself in something
else on set, Like it's difficult to read because right right, yeah,
so you know a lot That's why I think a
lot of people like knit or do you know, crochet
or crossword puzzles.
Speaker 6 (12:33):
There's something you can pick up and put down, right.
And I'd always wanted to.
Speaker 10 (12:37):
Play an instrument, and I thought like, well, everybody plays
the guitar, right, And so I just thought I'm going
to play the banjo. So I started playing in twenty twelve,
and it's been a really wonderful, constant companion for me.
Speaker 6 (12:51):
It's very meditative. It's not about performing.
Speaker 10 (12:54):
It's about, you know, like an outlet, noodling around and meditating.
And yeah, it's really it's really been fun and so
I've had a good time with it and uh and uh,
yeah I do play. I'm steammarted, literally one of the
best bando players in the world like that.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
I enjoyed talking to you, man, Congratulations on everything. I
hope I get to see you in person and listen
Brilliant minds Airs Mondays on NBC.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
Be sure to check it out, Zach.
Speaker 6 (13:19):

Speaker 2 (13:21):

good leading right there.
Speaker 3 (13:25):

gonna play a few more songs.
Speaker 3 (13:47):

Speaker 4 (13:50):

we take away the music.
Speaker 5 (13:54):

Speaker 3 (13:56):

quiz today? We're gonna get the lyrics without the music

Mario Courtney Lopez in the middle of a pop culture
pop quiz. Today's game is guessing song lyrics without the music,

Speaker 4 (18:02):
First of all, this is the oddest thing when you
say these lyrics out loud.
Speaker 8 (18:06):
This is right, you realize, because which tells you most
people don't really pay attention. If the music isn't there,
it's weird.
Speaker 5 (18:13):
Can you keep going?
Speaker 8 (18:14):
No, with the lights out, it's less dangerous. Here we
are now entertain us. I feel stupid.

Score is six to zero in a prop nineties version,

Speaker 8 (18:57):
And he held onto that prop That just all right?
Here we go go, hands on buzzers. He's laughing with
another girl and playing with another heart, placing high stakes,
making hearts ache. He's loved in seven languages. Diamond knights
