This is the Doug Pike Show, brought to you by American Shooting Centers Guns
Shooting at Instruction since nineteen eighty nine. Now Here's Doug Pike. Callum and
I are live from down at MoodyGardens, and I must say the view
this year is pretty spectacular, wouldyou agree? Cow just yeah, yeah.
(00:23):
We could play this like like I'llbe Michael Berry and you'd be Romo
and just find a bell today. And if I need to talk, so
anyway, I am overlooking the waterpark. I can't remember is that Schlitterbonne
or what? Yeah, Okay,I wanted to make sure I'm overlooking the
airport runway so we might see alittle bit of air traffic today. And
(00:44):
I can see all the way tothe beach. And I can tell you
even from where I sit here, having lived here most of my life and
been a surfer most of my life, it's rough as a cob. The
Gulf of Mexico is in. Don'tcome down here to fish today. If
you want to come down here andsurf, that's fine. If you want
to come down here to fish, just keep driving. It's going to be
(01:06):
pretty rough. Whatdy Garden's always agreat place to be though. I was
here last night for the IF four, the International Fly Fishing Film Festival,
a selection of films, and theywere just absolutely spectacular. And I'll be
telling you about this throughout the show, little bits and pieces from some of
(01:26):
the films that we saw last night. And tonight we have an entirely different
lineup of films. And if youcan still get down here, I may
or may not be able to geta couple of you in. I have
a few passes in my pocket thatI could set aside if one of you
guys wants to come down and bringa friend or whatever. This will be
(01:49):
very informal, so I don't knowhow we'll do this. We might even
have to break down and play theTexas Temperature game with somebody who wants to
come down here and wats that movie? Watch those movies. They're short films.
They're not feature linked films. They'renot two hours sitting and squirming in
your chair the interest And I'll okay, I'm gonna go get something to hold
(02:12):
that up. Don't worry about it, call just lay it down for now.
My phone, for some reason, keeps slipping ever so gently and slowly
from where I've got it propped upso I can see it, and about
every two minutes it just falls downlike it's possessed. I watch what is
that show? Paranormal caught on camera? Every now and then I'll stop on
that, and this reminds me ofthat. I've got this thing set up
(02:37):
and it's sitting perfectly still and there'snothing moving in the room, there's no
wind, nobody's tied a string toit, and it just falls down.
I don't think the room's haunted though. Moody Guard's a fantastic place, absolutely
fantastic. I enjoy it every timeI get down here. I don't come
down here nearly so much now thatmy son is older, but when I
(02:59):
get to come down and do thisfilm festival, it's just double the value
to me because it's a place whereI feel really comfortable. It's right in
kind of smack in the middle ofthe island. It's got all the attractions.
And we'll be talking about that lateron in the nine o'clock hour.
I'm going to talk to Evelyn Colefrom down here. She and Jerry Hamichek
(03:20):
invited me to come do this again, and like I was telling somebody last
night. I last year, afterI am CD those films. It was
maybe two days later that I sentJerry an email that said, Hey,
if you're going to do this againnext year, I want to be part
of it. I really do.And we've had a blast so far.
(03:42):
I had a good crowd in therelast night, they were somewhat subdued.
I expect more enthusiasm from the peoplewho are coming tonight, I really do.
So if you're going to come inhere, I want you to be
prepared to kind of ooh and aweand maybe hoot and holler when you see
something pretty cool. And you seea lot of cool things in these films.
(04:03):
I'm trying to think if I havea specific moment during those movies,
I'll wait on that. I've gota couple of notes that I wrote last
night in the dark. I mightas well have had to close my eyes
because it was just pitch dark inthe theater, of course, and as
some of these particular moments came upon film, I just put the pen
(04:24):
to the paper and just started writing. And I was surprised actually this morning
to see that some of it's almostlegible. I know what I wrote I
don't think anybody else. We wouldhave to call in the people who decipher
hiroglyphics, probably to do any otherjob than me doing it. All right,
So anyway, this morning we havealong the beach front a wind.
(04:47):
As I mentioned earlier, it's gonnait's about fifteen to twenty probably right now,
in fact, on the hold on, let me go look real quick.
I windsurf dot com, my favoritesite to check Texas, when I
can see the entire coast, andwe're anywhere from fourteen miles an hour,
(05:08):
and that's the dead load. Ithink that's behind a trash can or something
that's at ANIWK National Wildlife Refuge. Then it goes up twenty seven to twenty
one, twenty three, twenty three, twenty three. Again there's an outlier
eight. This is kind of likethe Texas temperature game, where that I
think it's where Perryton up in farNorth Texas has been anomalous for the past
(05:31):
six weeks. It'll be forty fortytwo, forty four, and then Perryton
is one. So I throw itout I have for the last several weeks.
Yeah, it's twenty plus miles anhour, and the forecast I saw
earlier says it's going to be gustingto thirty five miles per hour today.
I called my son last night. He and a friend of his planned to
(05:51):
go to surfside to fish the surfsidejetty today, and I advised him that
the way the way the coastline issetting up right now, those jetties are
gonna be taking a pounding and they'regonna be waves crashing onto the rocks.
You know what, I have alive cam or camera down there. Cow.
(06:13):
Let me see if I can justget down there to my Oh,
this won't take long, I promise, and if it does, I'll just
put it down saltwater recon serf side. That's what I want. I want
to see the surf side jetty.Let's see if I can get it.
It was these the Wi Fi herewas running a tad slow earlier. There
they are go all of a sudden. I don't want Galvis. I want
(06:33):
surfside, beach, Jetti surfside,Jetti Park. That's what I'm going for.
That's where they were gonna go fishingtoday. And I have a hunch
that what I'm gonna find is justwaves crashing over the thing. It's asking
me where I gotta sign it.I gotta log in. M who's on
(06:56):
Dave? Let's talk to Dave thenput him up. That's fine, Dave.
What's up? Man? Hey?Old there, you're at movie gardens
with the big pyramids and all thatstuff. Yeah, with a big pyramids.
No Egyptians, but just pyramids.Hey. You know, I got
to work did a little patchword overthere here and there. But man,
when you walk into some of thosedeals, Yeah, when you walk into
(07:16):
those big things, it's like you'rewalking in when they're putting the arc in
the Raiders of the Last Argan.Oh. Man, Yeah, it's into
the world fascinating place, it reallyis. I love it down here absolutely.
And then the flight Museums right nextdoor, Yes it is, Yes
it is. There's so much moreto do down in Galveston today. And
(07:39):
there was enough of a draw foreverand ever to certainly get me down here,
But now with with everything they've addedin the last ten years, it
just becomes more and more attractive.I really like it down here, I
hear now. My question first waswhen you all shot what was the highs
(08:00):
waves and stuff that you've ever beenin? Mine? Is probably being six
to seven foot wait, not driving, Yeah, fishing when you were fishing,
but I wasn't the captain, butyou were in there in the boat.
I was on the boat for severaltournaments where it was gosh like seven
to nine foot seas every now andthen a little bit bigger and just sloppy.
(08:20):
It as long as as long asit was deemed safe to go.
And in some of those tournaments,in hindsight, they kind of had to
wrap safe in quotes because it reallywasn't super safe to be out there.
But the boats could hand a littlelot better than the people on the boats.
(08:41):
And we just got beat all thepieces being out there in that kind
of rough water. And I wastalking about that last night with somebody up
here. I gave up once.I just said this is enough for me.
I watched a whole refrigerator break looseand just tumble across the salon,
like, no, I'm not doingthis anymore. Well, hey, I
(09:05):
got well, let me, Igot some disappointing news. I got kind
of stood up, and I didn'tget to go to Hollasville. But guess
what, one door closed and anotherone opens because I think I'm gonna gear
up today and be ready to gocatfishing Monday on Lake. What they missed
it? Hollasville? Do they?Well? I mean now my ride kind
(09:30):
of bailed on me. Anyway. Was it a date or just a buddy?
No, it was kind of adate. But anyway, man,
I feel bad. No, don'tfeel bad. You know, it's probably
the sixth time. But anyway, punch line in my mind, but I'm
not going to say it. Likemy songs, it's a divorse died and
(09:52):
I can't complain. So but no, no, everything is good. But
hey, you don't would when youlook forward to something else and he like,
I know a lot of not notyou, but I mean a lot
of other people. I'm only goingon sixty three, but man, you
know, I've been through so muchof stuff. I get up every day
(10:16):
and I go and I'm moving aroundand go because like my mom told me,
told me and my brothers, don'tlay down and die, you know,
get up there. No, Icouldn't agree with you more. I
couldn't agree with you more. Youabsolutely have to keep moving. I think
that's part of why I feel asgood as I do. I guess,
and I'm hanging in there is becausethat little sixteen year old of mine keeps
(10:37):
me moving eight well, not somuch anymore. He's becoming more independent.
But from the time he was aboutmaybe six or seven until he was about
fourteen, I was, Oh,I'm trying to keep up with him.
You know. It was quite right, real cold on my son's birthday.
I think I told you I boughtin that fishing pole and that rod room
(11:00):
with that that buzzbait o there theyellow and black, and we went out
there and I had a flash lightout there and on the first gas he
called it and he had your kiddowedtuco'bill. Sure that's how long ago that
was. But anyway, Oh,the birds are flying around and everything that's
(11:22):
going good. All right. Hey, God bless and God keep his God
blessing her. Hay men, Thanksa lot for your turn and everything.
Yes, sir, it really isman. This is making my sunrise over
guys, and all the more enjoyable. Thank you, buddy. I guess
the sun's rising, hunk out. It's kind of hard to tell. It's
getting it's getting light outside, allright. We got to take a little
(11:43):
break here on the way out.I'll tell you about Carter's country. I
was reminded yesterday, as a matterof fact, by email that with Mother's
Day coming up, and with thestate of the world kind of the way
it is, wouldn't be a badidea to get mom enrolled in a concealed
carry course. I was talking toone of the people at work the other
(12:05):
day. His wife is now caring, and there was somebody else there who's
got a grown daughter, and hehas sent his grown daughter out looking for
something to keep her safe when she'sout. We're not quite to the position,
thank god, where it's just horribleanytime you walk out the door.
(12:30):
But it's now be the good timeto go ahead and get that concealed carry
course. Get the confidence that youor your wife or mom, or whoever
it is you send to that coursefor Mother's Day can do the same for
themselves when you're not around, becauseit doesn't take but one mistake, one
(12:52):
misstep somewhere and not paying attention forsomebody to try to sneak up on you
and take your stuff. I watcheda video of that just two days ago
that really drove me crazy. Isvery frustrating to watch when someone who potentially
may have had a concealed carry courseand been carrying, could have stopped that
threat before it ever got close.Concealed carry what it does mostly is teach
(13:16):
you the law. It teaches youwhen you can and when you cannot draw
and or fire that weapon of yoursin State of Texas. And that's a
very important thing to know. Ifyou're gonna carry, You've got to know
what your rights are as someone who'scarrying a firearm, when you can use
it and when you can't. Andlike I've said before, worrying about the
proficiency test is not a worry ifyou've never shot before. I strongly recommend
(13:41):
some lessons and Carter's Country can certainlyhelp you with that. And once you're
done with the classroom session on theconcealed carry course, then you go outside
onto the range up there at Treshwigand all you have to do is hit
a target roughly the size of apiece of poster board at twenty yards and
with any skills at all, thatwill not be a problem. And if
(14:03):
you're ever called upon to use yourweapon up close and personal to save your
skin, you'll be perfectly skilled enoughto do it. Not a problem.
Carterscountry dot com is a website GUNSMOand hunting stuff since the nineteen sixties.

four three eight three nine three ninety. This is Sports Talk seven ninety Houston
sports online at sports seven ninety dotcom. Back to the Doug Fike Show.
All right, well, how'd youlike it? Melvioyn be honest?
(14:48):
You got to be honest, Igot the truth meeter on you. Sounds
pretty good. I love it asold fashioned it is. It's almost think
of the style. I'm not sureexactly what I would. I don't know.
It's got country in it, obviously, but I'm not sure what.
It's country something, but I'm notsure what. Anyway, we're back live
at Moody Gardens by the way,and having a blast down here. The
(15:09):
film festival last night was amazing. It's gonna be a totally different set of
films tonight. It's so windy you'renot gonna be able to fish if you
come down here this afternoon. AndI'm not even gonna get my golf clubs
out of the car, but Iam going to make it back over there
to MC the second round of filmsdown here, and I would encourage any
(15:30):
of you who have haven't made plansfor tonight and you're not too terribly far
away and you want to see someamazing films on a huge screen, by
all means, come on down here. Uh, let's go talk to Robert.
Let's do that. Robert. Hey, Robert will say, good morning,
my man. How you doing today? Yeah, yes, sir,
(15:52):
I appreciate. I appreciate, Uh, you're taking care of us yesterday.
And uh, man, I tellyou, I tell you what, as
uh, someone who has only experiencedthe saltwater fishing for my life, you
know, to see the fly fishingside. It was definitely it was awesome.
Man. I tell you what. The one thing that I truly enjoyed
(16:15):
about all those films last night wasyou know, the the the pure joy
and excitement of the people that werein these films and and just the experience
and the adventures that they went onand to you know, catch that one
fish that was on their you know, their bucket lists quote unquote or or
(16:40):
and how they were doing it,and I mean, and it's and it's
not about like I have found Icaught this bitch, but it's the whole
leading up to catching that fish,or maybe not even catching it, but
going after it and trying. Andit's like, you know, that's one
thing I tell you know, I'vetold my wife. It's like, whether
I catch a fish or I don'tcatch your fish, I just love to
(17:02):
fish, you know, it's thewhole point. You already get here and
enjoy it. Yeah, And it'slike, man, but to see that,
it's like, oh God, thatwas amazing. So I definitely appreciate.
Yeah, well a lot of thelot of the enthusiasm you see on
these guys. And I know itfirsthand. I've been on these kinds of
trips before. It's because fly fishing, you don't have a lot of rain.
(17:29):
You can't throw that fly as asfar as you can throw a top
waterre on a bait castor you havevery limited range. It's maybe a full
fly line and a little bit ofbacking. I can do that with an
eight or nine weight and punch itout there pretty far, but it's still
not even half as far as Ican throw on a bait caster, and
so not only do you have toyou have to sneak that close to the
(17:53):
fish undetected. You have to presentthat fly where it doesn't hit the water
like a ton of bricks and splatterand scare them away. And then the
fish has to be in the moodto eat. You have to present that
fly, and so many things haveto come together in honey. The equivalent
in hunting is going from rifle huntingto bow hunting. And that's that's why
(18:15):
a lot of you see these bowhunters on TV getting so excited when they
finally get a deer because they theyworked really hard to get that close.
And that's very similar with with flyfishing. If you make one, if
you drop a bottle cap on thebottom of the boat when you're pulling up
close to a bonefish or a wholeschool of bonefish, they're gone and you
got to start from square one.So they oh, there's a lot of
(18:38):
anticipation. And and I told youlast night, you got to get into
this, man. I told mybuddy, that was last night, I
said, Man, I said,Doug. Doug said, we need to
we need to get into this andtry it. I tell you what he
been. It even peaked his interestbecause when you met last night, he
(18:59):
you know, he was saying, you know, he's kind of a starter
guy. You know, he's tryingto trying to get into the guy business.
A little bit word of mouth. But you know, I didn't salt
water. I mean, there adiamond, doesn't. They're all over the
place, but a fly fishing guidearound here, I mean, I mean,
I'm sure there's a good amount, but nowhere near got to about that.
(19:21):
They're a for salt for saltwater.I mean, I don't know,
I don't. I don't know howthat compares. But he was just like
I could see his wheels spinning going. Man, that would be something to
really look And I'm like, well, I mean patient and everything, but
well, anyway, a little secretthat fly fishing guides don't like to tell
the other guys is that a flyfisherman on your boat doesn't expect to get
(19:44):
a limit of fish every day, doesn't expect to go out and catch a
hundred fish. They're patient and anda lot of times if you can just
get them in front and give themshots, if they miss, if they
make a bad cash or something,they don't blame you. They're really it's
a really good bunch of guys.It really is getting men in with I
definitely would love to see it firsthand. And uh, there's a good friend
(20:07):
of mine who he like, Isaid, he's a guy and he does
that, and I'm to just getout there with him and see how it
goes and try it and just tryit and go from there. But anyways,
man, I know you got abusy morning and hopefully you got some
rest. And again appreciate you takingcare of us yesterday, and you're hopefully
you guys have a great turnout today. You bet when the wind lays down,
(20:30):
I'll bring a couple of flower rotsdown to your place one night.
All right, we're out those littlesand trouts. Sounds like a playing my
friend. Take careverybody, thanks,Robert, see man audios. All right,
let's get Brandon on the phone. We don't want to get too late
here. Make sure I get totalk to everybody. Brandon, what's going
on? My friend? Good morning, Good morning? How are you?
(20:53):
I'm great man. Where are youat today? I'm I'm at Moody Gardens
having a blast, have fun.Is that it's it's not where I am
and what I'm looking at right nowout my window is not is not hard
to take. I'll just say thatis it wendy up up there? It's
(21:15):
very windy. It's gonna blow allday too. It's supposed to blow up
to about thirty thirty five miles anhour eventually. So yeah, it's it's
moving pretty good, big surf onthe beach front. I can actually see
there's one angle between buildings and whatnotwhere I can see how far out it's
breaking and and I'm a long waysaway from it. That's that's some pretty
(21:37):
big surf. I'm looking at mymom and I would come see you someday,
come on. Yeah, it'd begreat. It'd be fun. I
wish I could broadcast from here everyday. I do. Wouldn't be too
bad yet. Cal's nodding, he'sin he's in agreement. We may have
to set that up. This willbe our new studio. Cal. Yeah,
(22:00):
a quick question for you. Youcan sure. I'm we're gonna go
fishing first, okay, And andan he bought for fishing. Where what
(22:22):
part of town are you in Houston? Where? Whereabouts in Houston north,
southeast or west? Wait Okay, okay, okay, do this. Get
on the internet and go to theTexas Parks and Wildlife Departments website and then
(22:47):
look up neighborhood fishing. And ifyou get into that area of that website
the website again, I will doit on my iPad. I don't know
the exact Just do a search forTexas Parks and Wildlife Okay, okay,
(23:07):
and then once you get into theTexas Parks and Wallete Department website, look
up neighborhood fishing, do a searchfor that in there. You got it,
Okay, let's see if we canget him there. Well, let
(23:30):
me let me tell you what you'llfind there, because I'm almost getting close
to having to take a break,so I want to make sure you know
what you're looking for. When youget into that neighborhood fishing place, there
will be a list of places allin town. Okay, yeah, do
it later. But what you're lookingfor is the places where they're stocking catfish.
(23:52):
And that will make it easy becausethey stalk a lot of catfish in
these little lakes and neighborhoods all overthe state. And there's a bunch of
them, I know down by mein sugar Land. There's a bunch of
them up on the north side, all over this state and all over the
Greater Houston area where they stock afew hundred catfish every couple of weeks.
And they're fun to catch. Theyreally are. My son, that's what
he cut his teeth on. Alot of those little fish over in Missouri
(24:15):
City. Had a couple of lakesover there, and so that'll get you
started. I don't know where heis right now. He's at you.
He had a friend's house right now. Okay, right hey, I got
a run, buddy, Okay, real quick, can you tell sky Mike?
(24:37):
I said, high, I cando that. I can and I
will. Okay, all right, but we got to run. Thanks ed,
great to hear from you, BrandanAudios. Buddy. All right,
we've got to take a little breakhere on the web. I'll tell you
about black Horse Golf Club. It'sit's windy. Okay, it's windy,
but it's not raining and it's notcold, which means if you've got time
(25:00):
on your hands, and you don'tmind maybe losing a couple of golf balls,
and you don't mind maybe having togo three clubs up just to get
to a par three somewhere. Thiswill be a fun day to go play.
It'll test your game, it reallywill. This is something every now
and then you might be invited toa tournament or something where you have to
go play in a lot of wind, and it actually is good practice to
(25:23):
just do that every now and then. It doesn't have to be perfect every
time you play golf. Playing golfis perfect enough. Two ninety to Fry
Road, hang us south and thengo down a couple of three miles and
you'll start seeing golf course. Thenyou'll see the gate, and once you
pull into that gate, everybody yousee from that point forward is going to
be there to help you have agreat time playing golf on two beautiful courses,
(25:48):
good food, great lessons available atthe far end of the range,
and membership options that can get youpreferred tea times, they get you discounts
in the pro shop, and mostimportantly, for a range rat like me,
they give you unlimited range time andrange balls. You can just stand
out there and hit to your fingersbleed if you want to. Black Horse
(26:11):
Golf Club dot com is a website, very easy to find, very easy
to get to and capable of handlinghuge tournaments, or just helping one or
two guys jump on because it lookedlike a pretty fun day to go play
golf. Black Horse Golf Club dotcom. We are Sports Talk seven ninety.
(26:32):
Listen online at Sports seven ninety dotcom. Now more Doug Bike,
Cal and I are in Galves.Melvin and Adam are in Houston. Guess
who's got the better do? Oh? Look a seagull, Cal, isn't
that cute? What do you guyssee back home? Walls? They don't
even want to talk to Gray Walls. I'll bring you a sticker of a
(26:59):
seagull. We'll put up in therefor you. See if I can get
rainbow, a rainbow and a seagull. All right, well y'all may get
a chat. No, I don'tthink it's gonna be Oh, it's getting
a little too bright and there's almostsome sunshine. I don't think we'll see
a rainbow down here today. Cal, that's too bad too, huh Oh,
sorry boys, sorry boys. Soanyway, we're down here at Moody
(27:22):
Gardens. Like I mentioned earlier inthe program, just I would say,
having a pretty darn good time.I am as soon as the show's over,
I'm gonna go down to the beachand just kind of drive up and
down the sea wall. I havefishing equipment with me. Maybe I'll swing
over to Robert's house. I don'tknow. I'll go knocking on his door
see if I can get out onthat pier of his. Although it is
windy, the water over there wherehe is. I'm not gonna tell you
(27:45):
where he lives. It's nobody's business, but the water where he is may
be protected enough that it stays cleareven in this much wind. It is
kind of isolate, and there's nota really long fetch anywhere that the waves
could build on themselves. We'll see, all right. Like I said,
(28:08):
we're down here at Moody Gardens andif you can get down here tonight the
film festival continues second of the twonights, the final showings, if you
will, and they are totally differentfilms from last night. There was a
really I was surprised when I askedtoward the end last night how many people
were coming back for tonight, andit was I don't know how it wasn't
(28:32):
all of the people. In fact, there's a couple of my friends who
were here last night who couldn't comeback, But it was most of them.
It was most of them, andmany of them had been here last
year as well. I was talkingto people out in the lobby and just
asking them why they came down here, and I'd say about half of them
said because we were here last yearand it was that good. So if
(28:55):
you got a little time this evening, and you got fifteen bucks in your
pocket, and by all means, come on here and join us in the
Moody Gardens MG three D studio ortheater. It is a huge screen.
You haven't been over there, haveyou cal you haven't seen it. You
need to walk over and take alook at it. At least I know
somebody can get you in over there. Don't worry, but it's it's a
(29:15):
big, big, big theater, big big screen and a whole lot of
fun. Seven one three two onetwo five seven ninety Email me Dougpike at
iHeartMedia dot com. I heard fromMojo. Mojo had to go up to
Iowa. And if you think,if you're kind of whining about the weather
today, let me get hold on. I got to go to my emails
(29:36):
and make sure I'm not neglecting anyone. Put my spectacles on so I can
see. Oh, thank you,James, thank you for letting me know
that. I'm glad you did.I really appreciate it. Because Dave,
Dave, if you're still listening,I hate to tell you this, buddy,
but you're wrong, and I waskind of anyway. The Flight Museum
(29:57):
has moved from Galveston up to EllingtonField. And I should have known that
because I've been in negotiations through oneof the people I work with at iHeart
to maybe speak for them, andI would love to do that. I
really would, absolutely I would Mojowaded in, and I'll tell you something
(30:18):
else about that in a second.Mojo wade in. The genre I was
looking for earlier is cowboy music. That's what that was. That was cowboy
music. And hence you know whoelse but Dave would fire that at us
on a Saturday morning. If you'rewhining about the Oh good, heavens,
the sun's trying to crack out downhere, cal this is not this isn't
(30:40):
horrible, is it? Oh man? I can see the beach. I
may have to go rent a surfboardtoday. I'm gonna have to stop somewhere
and probably take out a life insurancepolicy first, because I haven't served in
a while and it's gonna be prettybig. But I'm not scared. I'm
not scared at all. So Mojo, you don't like windy weather, you
(31:02):
would not have liked what Mojo hadto do. All the way up in
Iowa. And for the latest partof that journey to go visit family,
there were warnings about tornadoes and sirensstart going off, and this is legitimate
(31:26):
tornado country, and sure enough, one of them hit the edge of town
and Mojo could actually see this thing. And Mojo, who grew up in
the Midwest, said it was big. It was really big, and really
wide and on the ground and prettymuch ripped up a corner of the whole
(31:48):
town. That's kind of scary downhere. I can legitimately say that we
had a tornado come through my neighborhood. But it didn't tear up a town.
It tore down a section of myfence, but not the whole fence.
It tore some shingles off some houses, but it didn't destroy houses.
(32:10):
It actually picked up a trampoline outof somebody's backyard and put it on a
neighbor's roof. But that's about it. We get much smaller versions of that
now. We do get hurricanes, get plenty of those. And I've talked
about this before on the program. It's just kind of a you've got to
(32:30):
pick your poison. No matter whereyou live, there's going to be some
sort of earth shattering which brings upearthquakes, I guess. And by the
way, speaking of out in California, I read a couple of weeks ago,
and I talked about it on fiftyplus briefly because it's California. But
the San Andrea's fault has been kindof rumbling a little bit. You know
(32:52):
how you get when you eat toomuch fried food and your stomach starts.
That's what the San Andreas fault isdoing. And we don't know if it's
going to go south or not.But the people who watched that stuff are
watching and I'm just glad I livea half a continent away from there for
that and many many other reasons.Right now, that state's lost its mind.
(33:15):
I don't want to get into that. I really don't. I am
what time is it, I don'twant to get late. I'm good.
We could tell you know what wecould do, Melbourne. We could take
a break on time just to leadyou into the false impression that I'm going
to be on time again in yourlifetime. But we could do it just
this once. Let's do that.I want to tell you about Primo Doors.
(33:36):
Primo Doors is the company that mywife and I chose to put a
brand new door on the front ofour house. We had been talking about
it for probably the better part ofat least a year. It was just
time, and there were other circumstancesand reasons that we wanted to change from
a lot of glass in our doorto a solid wood front door. And
(34:00):
when the opportunity arose to go talkto Jason and his people over at Primo
Doors, we did that, andwe did the same progression that I like
to recommend to anybody who's thinking aboutdoing this, because your front door actually
makes a very important impression on anybodywho comes to see you. Your front
door is a reflection of your wholefamily's personality and how much you care about
(34:22):
the stuff you've got. So ifyour door has been through sunshine and bad
weather and just got the tar beatout of it last summer, and it
looks like a piece of driftwood downhere on the beach. You might want
to go check with Primo Doors.First thing you do, go to the
website Premo doors dot com, doa little recon there, take a look
(34:42):
at some of the before and afterpictures and get you all excited about doing
this. Then you go double checkmake sure you got your tax refund in
so you can walk over there andready to just knock this out. And
when you go in, you'll sitdown with somebody who can help you wind
your way through the thousand literally ofselections that you possibly could make, iron
(35:04):
door, wood door, fiberglass door, all of that, and then they'll
help you get it from ten thousandchoices down to just five or six that
probably will appeal to you and yourfamily, and then you can whetele it
down yourselves from there. Then youpick the the hardware for that door,
the locking mechanism, then you pickthe stained color, and before you know
(35:28):
it, they're going to knock it. Hey, hey dud, Yeah,
your door's ready. I found thatout the other day about a week and
a half ago. Now, allwe're waiting for now is just to find
a little bit of curing to getall of that new chemical smell out of
there from the varnish. They usefour coats of arnish to make sure that
door ears is going to last avery long time. Primodoors dot com,
(35:51):
if you drop my name, youget a free handle set, and that's
going to save you hundreds of dollars. They are open by the way on
Saturdays from ten to two. Checkthe website and then call over there.
Just talk to them for a fewminutes and see how easy it is and
see how exciting you can how excitingit can be to realize that you're going
to get a brand new front doorin your house is going to look spectacular.
(36:13):
Primodoors dot com is the website greatpeople, family owned business and that's
all they do is doors and doorinstallation. Let the pros handle that for
you. Primodors dot Com. Yourrockets and astros live here. We are
Sports Talk seven ninety. The conversationcontinues this as the Doug Tite Show.
(36:36):
We are up there in the stratosphere, baby, and it is absolutely gorgeous
down here. It looks like theclouds are breaking up, and well they're
not really breaking up, but they'rethinning. Much like most people. My
Age's hair. And it's gonna bea pretty day down here on the island
if you don't mind a little bitof a breeze or a lot of breeze.
(36:57):
I have got a couple of listenersending me photographs now of weather phenomenon,
and Aaron, I'm proud of youreffort. I'm gonna patch you on
the back for showing me pictures ofthese nasty looking clouds. But I'm gonna
tell you straight up that Mojo's gotyou beat. And what I might do
with Mojo's permission is send you acopy of the picture that I received from
(37:25):
Mojo of Uh, these are nottornatic clouds. This is a tornado and
a big one, and I meana big one. Would you agree,
col thumbs up yes, And Idon't. I don't ever want to look
out of a window and see that. And the irony for me is that
(37:45):
there's two other cars in the shotthat Mojo sent and this. They're just
on the side of the road, and that tornado looks maybe what a half
a mile away. I don't knowwhich way it's going. I wouldn't care,
But there are two other cars inthe photograph that are in perfect focus.
And I got to tell you,if either one of those two cars
(38:06):
was mine and that was coming myway, it would have been very difficult
to catch my car in focus. It would have it would have been humming,
Holy mackerel. How do people liveup there? Uh? James wid
In by the way, on onour musical genre and just kind of tweaked
(38:30):
it down a little bit more ofthat Bob Willson that Dave asked. Dave
asked Melbourne to play that is knownas country swing and what did we have
it as before? Cowboy cowboy music. So I'll let I'll let I'll let
James and Mojo argue over that.Seven one three two one two five seven
(38:52):
ninety. Email me Dougpike at iHeartMediadot com at nine o'clock before I get
into golf. We're gonna talk withEvel and Cole from down here at Moody
Gardens by the way, just tokind of give you an idea of what
they're doing down here and why they'redoing it, and to let them kind
of pat themselves on the back asa collective of people who really care about
(39:15):
nature and whatnot. We had aboy, we had a visitor. There
was a gosh. I don't rememberexactly what kind of owl it was,
but it, I believe was thelargest owl in the world, I think
the largest owl species, and justa beautiful, absolutely beautiful bird that they
keep over there in the giant Pyramid. I can't remember the names of all
(39:39):
the the areas over there, butit's just fascinating. It's a great family
destination, there's no question about it. And they do they do give back
tremendously to causes that helped this worldof ours keep going around and around seven
on three two one, two, five seven nine. Email me Doug pick
(40:00):
at iHeartMedia dot com. Aaron's upin Minnesota, driving around forty eight degrees
forty eight degrees and wet in Minnesota. And of course those tornado. Oh
that that South Dakota where the cloudscame from. I don't know where he
is. I guess he's Minnesota.That's a long ways up. I don't
want to live that far north. There's no way I could do that.
(40:22):
I would not coot. Which what'sthe name Alan? Come on, bring
it on, Let's bring him on, Melvin Alan. What's up, buddy?
There? He is? What's up, Allan? Good morning? Doug,
are you doing I was living thedream man, I'm sitting here on
the I'm I'm saying if I wastrying to, I was taking it back
(40:43):
in my mind, if I couldwork out any way to get down to
this afternoon, pay my fifteen dollarsto go see a wonderful show, and
just to just get be on thebeach. Yeah, I don't care what
the weather's doing. Yeah it's notyou know, Honestly, the so trying
to pop out, and it's gonnabe not a bad day to just be
on the beach. You know.I would I wouldn't want to try to
(41:06):
cast into it, and I wouldn'twant to. I don't think I'm tough
enough anymore to serve whatever's going onover there. But I'll go watch for
a little while. Yeah, Imean, now, look, my dream
of living in Florida ain't had meyet. But but I'll take what God
gives me, and which is Galaxton, you know, and Galveston is so
it's so underrated. Honestly, everybodythinks the water's always dirty. Everybody thinks
(41:30):
the water and all that is isjust sand and a little bit of sentiment
stirred up from a million years ofbeing just west of the Mississippi River coming
out in this city don't help. But you know, yeah, yeah,
Well, the bottom line is that'sokay, Catches. You catch that golf
of Mexico on the right day, especially in the winter time when all the
algae's down, and it can lookit can be the twin sister of anywhere
(41:52):
in the Caribbean. It's beautiful. So so what's on that line? Okay,
I'm gonna have a gripe and thenI'm gonna get to something more serious
to me. But look, ifyou're in a boat and you got a
lot of money, or you don'thave a lot of money, don't be
flying through the lake at one hundredmiles an hour like you're somebody important.
(42:15):
I wish you could regulate the speedof boats, but we can't or they
won't or whatever. But God helpanybody who ever runs into me or flips
my boat or whatever, because Ipromise you I'll hunch you down. And
I got plenty of money to keepyou important. So you know, I'm
not gonna put up with that, you know, flying by me at a
one hundred miles an hour. Somefancy basket boat because and they't gonna save
(42:38):
you from me. But yeah, the prom there's no excuse for that.
The boating industry I think is ata tipping point right now because it is
possible, and all the salt waterguys talk about it as well. The
horsepower that they can put on thebacks of these boats. They're rated to
(42:59):
a certain number of horsepower. Butman, there's no reason to go that
fast on the wall. It's notit's not a boat race, if you.
My grandfather raced hydroplanes for most ofhis adult life after he finished working
for AT and T and putting upHe was part of the engineering team that
(43:20):
put the first telecommunications line long distancelines on the entire East coast. And
once he got out of that,he used his engineering and whatnot skills to
rebuild racing motors and build his actuallyphysically built his own hydroplane boats and raced
them. Yeah, and did verywell. But there's no reason to go
(43:42):
that fast on the water. It'sit's just not worth it. And I
don't know. Look, if you'retrying to get off shore, Andrew,
if you're trying to get off shore, that's fine. You're away from me,
away from everybody. You Yeah, take off, have a good time.
Yeah, but don't don't be goingto the bay into the lake.
People are trying to enjoy a dayof fishing about one hundred miles an hour.
(44:02):
There's no excuse for that. I'mhere sign on that. I really
yeah. And hey, if ifyou've got to go fast boat and you
don't go fast right by other people. If you want to go out there
and tackle that water and not bescared about hitting anything or having some boat
wait knock you of over, that'sfine, but man, just take it.
(44:25):
You slow down a little bit aroundpeople. There's just no reason.
Yeah, Whits just ridiculous. Anyway, thank you. My more serious question,
I am looking for. I spentlike half a day for some reason
I'm trying to find I want aweather app. I've got to I've got
a channel, a news channel appon my phone, but for some reason,
(44:45):
they don't have emergency alerts like iftornadic weather pops up or anything like
that. And and I was tryingto look on YouTube, you know maybe,
So I'm just wondering, I wanta weather app that if something pops
up, you know, my phonewill be bor ring or whatever. What
do you mean you may I justhave the Weather Channel stuff on mine,
(45:06):
but you may have your weather warningsturned off? Have you checked going notifications?
Yeah? Now on my phone notifications? And then I looked on the
app of the of the weather appI have from the news station, and
there's nothing on there either. Ican you know, turn on emergency alerts
or anything like that. So Iwas like, okay, well, maybe
(45:30):
I'm missing something. Yeah. Sometimesif you turn those off, then you
know, if you turn them offto not get Amber alerts, then you
may have turned off your weather alertsas well. I don't know, I've
been somebody in this audience can tellme what what brand you have? You
have the weather you have the WeatherChannel app on your phone? You obviously
all do I do? Okay,I do, okay, well, and
(45:51):
i'll i'll there's one called Wendy thatI nowloaded. And you know, it
gives you a lot of information, but I don't think it, you know,
doesn't give me what I'm looking lookingfor, you know, a lightning
alerts or tornado alerts. I gotyou anyway, all right, Well I
do it to you. I'm righton the edge here. I got a
roll. Oh yeah, I'm justthrowing bullet smoke. I know, man,
(46:12):
you're throwing one hundred mile an hourboats and tornadoes at me. All
right, we'll see them audios, all right. On the way out,
I'll tell you about American shooting centersout there at West Timer Parkway. Well,
yeah, West Timer Parkway between Katieand Highway six. Very easy to
find. And if you're wondering whetheryou, oh, gosh, I hope
I don't drive right past it.No, that's not going to happen.
(46:32):
There are giant berms out there thathave been stopping bullets behind targets for gosh,
the better part of thirty plus years. Now. I was out there
for the groundbreaking believe it or not. That was a long time ago.
And now fast forward, man namedEda Riggy bought that property. I don't
know how many years ago Ed tookit over, but he has turned it
(46:53):
into an absolute mecca for shooting enthusiasts. One of the safest, most fun
most different places you'll ever go shoot. You can. You can try your
hand at any of three Sporting Clay'scourses. There are ten or twelve trapping
skeet fields. There are five standssetups all over the property. Just to
(47:15):
make sure you understand that Ed isreally into clay target shooting. He's one
of the best in the country withthe sporting clay, so don't let him
talk you into Betton unless you're really, really good. The rifle and pistol
range start at five yards and goout to six hundred yards and then nestled
in down there toward the end ofthat rifle range is a pop up silhouette
(47:37):
range where you can shoot your littletwenty two at these pop up targets,
rabbits and squirrels and whatnot, allthe way out to two hundred and fifty
yards. If you're not breaking targets, if you're not punching bull's eyes like
you want to, if you're embarrassedto go on dove hunts because you shoot
five boxes of shells and you canbring back one bird, get some lessons.
They have professional instruction out there inevery shooting disc and get yourself some
(48:00):
lessons. You'll be a lot morehappy next time you go out with your
pals. American Shootingcenters dot Com isthe website American Shootingcenters dot com. Back
we are at Moody Guards and havinga blast. The sun is actually this
is almost blue sky here, Cal. It's just kind of a haze.
(48:20):
It's a haze. It's not cloudyper se. Now I'm not looking east,
west, north and south. Ican't see my house from here,
but maybe I could if I wasface the other way there. This is
getting kind of fun with this wholeweather thing in the in the country music.
First on the weather, Alan,if you want alerts to come up
(48:43):
on your phone, you just movedto Iowa. Holy go. Mojo emailed
me and said, my radar andFox were both blowing up my phone with
alert yesterday. And the picture ofthat tornado that was sent, by the
way Cal saw the picture, hewill testify that it was frightening as anything
(49:04):
you can imagine. Guess how faraway that was that picture was taken?
This is you said, Mam,ten miles away that was? Now how
big was it? Oh my god? I'm laughing because it wasn't here,
thank god? But holy cow? This Holy cow? Okay, Carl waded
(49:25):
in great music this morning, Doug. I can't take any credit at all
for that, except for having agood production team back there in Houston taking
care of us. It's country music. Best known as Texas Swing or Western
Swing. So there's another name wecan call it besides enjoyable. Oh and
(49:49):
Alan weighs in wedge. Tornadoes arereally scary. He continues. I love
those guys whose trucks or designed goright into those tornadoes. Not with me
in one. I don't care whatkind of a truck you got, you
going into a No, Cal's notgoing. I'm not going. We'll let
you young people do that before you'resmart enough to realize that it's not that
(50:14):
smart spike. Oh wow, itsays, these these trucks have spikes that
dig into the pavement and suck thetruck down onto the ground. No,
no, and never not a chance. Ten miles away that picture was taken.
Cal, I'm gonna I'm gonna sendthat to Aaron. See what he
(50:35):
thinks. I'll try to remember hereis a see let me open this one
up. Morning, Doug. Justcurious who your grandpa is. My grandpa,
uncle and cousins race Hyder' plane boatsfor decades. Grandpa actually built his
own boats in his garage in Lakeland, Florida. My grandfather was in Pompino
(50:55):
Beach, Florida. Wow, TomCrown, uncle Chris Helston. Now this
would have been a long long timeago because I'm older than you. It's
a good vet that I'm older thanyou, Shane. But I'll send you
that information at some point when Iget a little break here today. Little
bitting ones he was racing. Hewould take the engines out of and this
(51:19):
is a car that's long since disappearedoff the face of the earth. They
were called sunbeams. They were little, tiny cars. I want to say.
It might have been like a fortytwo qbicinch engine and that was it.
But he would redo those things andtighten them up and get them going
and on about a ten foot longlittle hydroplane boat. Run those things at
(51:42):
ninety plus miles an hour. It'slike riding along on a potato chip.
And I actually got to enjoy avery brief run in one of those all
by myself, and it scared meenough that I didn't want any more of
it. That was and I Iwas never scared of driving on the street
fast, or driving any kind oftrack fast. But water water scared me.
(52:09):
It really did. Seven one three, two two five seven ninety Email
me Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com. While we are down here, by the
way, and in the nine o'clockhours I mentioned earlier, I'm gonna have
Evelyn cole on and then after that, once I'm finished talking to Evelyn,
and I may actually go to golfa little bit early, like late in
(52:32):
this hour, so that I cangive Evelyn a little bit more time in
than nine. The PGA Tour isover in New Orleans at the Zurich Classic.
This is that team event. It'stwo man teams and the score.
As soon as I looked at thescores this morning, it reminded me,
oh, yeah, that's not justone guy. The leaders are thirteen under
(52:54):
and they'll they'll get deeper as theygo into today and tomorrow. I'm sure
it's a fantastic event over there.I went to it once many many years
ago and didn't get to stay forthe whole thing, but it was good.
Seven one three two one two fiveseven ninety email medugpick at iHeartMedia dot
com. I'm kind of looking atthe stuff I've got put in front of
(53:15):
me here. Let me go checkemail real quick and make sure I'm clear.
Then I want to go back tothat speeding on the water stuff.
Okay, that's clear. That's clear. I'm looking good here. And boy,
if I missed your email and you'resitting there going why are you talking
about mine? I apologize? Fourround? Oh wow, yeah, I
(53:35):
think I did see this story thatDavid just sent me. Hold on,
let me double check Americans. Ohyes, okay, yeah, this guy.
I did see this story yesterday andI wasn't able to do it on
fifty plus. I sometimes have stuffin my luggage that I wished i'd not
(53:58):
put in there. There was onetime I'd been given a pair of needlenosed
flyers that was about a foot long, and they were given to me by
a guy, a fishing guide upon Lake Livingston, Will Kirkpatrick. I'm
not sure if Will's still around.I really hope he is. He was
a fantastic help to me when Iwas writing at the paper. Pardon me,
(54:19):
but Will had given me these plyersand I was on my way to
a trip somewhere, and I hadput those plyers when I got him from
him, probably three weeks beforehand tuckedhim into the back of one of my
little carry on bags because that's theonly place they would really fit. Well,
totally forgot about him. Going throughsecurity in the airport, Ding,
(54:43):
Ding, Ding, And they keeprunning this bag back and forth through there,
and they open it and they lookall through it and they can't find
they can't find what this image is. It's a pair of plyers, you
idiots. But nonetheless they think it'ssome sort of weapon. So they finally
me over there and say, hey, look at this image and tell us
(55:04):
what that is. And I thought, oh, great, these are my
fishing plyers. Let me get themout for you. And in this particular
bag I was carrying at the time, there's kind of a secret little compartment
in there. There really is,and they couldn't find it. So I
just reached in there and I unraveledit in the way that it gets unraveled,
(55:24):
and I produced the flyers handle first, because I'm not stupid, and
I produced these pliers. I said, oh, you can't fly with those,
And I was kind of like, why not just a pair of plyers.
Well, those could be turned intoa weapon. Well so could a
pencil if you sharpened it enough. But in any day, in any event,
(55:45):
I wasn't going to argue with him. And there was a policeman,
an HPD guide his credit it wasat an Intercontinental HPD. Guy comes over
and say, man, you reallywant those flyers? Said, yeah,
I absolutely do. They're great. And he said you got four bucks?
I said, yes, I do, and he went over and came back
with At that time, the postoffice had an envelope, kind of a
(56:07):
cardboard envelope, and anything you couldstuff into it they would send to anywhere.
It said on the front for fourbucks. He said, put your
address on here, put your nameand address on here, Give me the
four bucks, and I'll go putthe stamps on there for you, and
it'll be here when you get back. And sure enough, when I got
home there it was right there inthe mailbox. So let that be a
(56:28):
lesson to you this other guy.The reason I bring that up is because
this guy was on a trip toTurks and Caicos and in his carry on
bag accidentally had left from some huntingtrip. I'm trying to get to that
part if I can tell where itis, and only the bottom line is
he had four or six whatever itis, rounds of live rounds of AMMO
(56:53):
in his carry on and it sayshere in the story that he doesn't even
remember putting them in there. Atsome point, he says, at some
point, airport security extracted a baggiethat had four hunting bullets and he meant
cartridges. But that's okay, thatI used for deer hunting. And I
(57:14):
was just as surprised as anybody elsethat they made that discovery, this man
told Fox News Digital, continuing thequote, I don't recall ever putting those
bullets in that bag. I canmake an assumption that I used that bag
on weekend trips I had back inNovember, used that bag for my deer
hunting trip to Texas. This.Let this be a lesson to everybody in
(57:39):
this audience who owns guns and travelswith their gun sometimes or uses the same
carry on for driving to a deerhunt as you would use to fly to
Turks and Caicos. Because the riskthis guy takes is that a judge somewhere
down there in that far away nationis going to sentence him to what he
(58:05):
faces potentially, and that's twelve years, twelve years in prison for a legitimately
honest mistake. He had no weapon, And I think that will that will
save him a little bit, andI think that will get him off if
he's got any kind of legal help. But still, that wasn't smart.
(58:30):
That wasn't smart. Seven three twoone two five seven ninety Email me Doug
pick At, iHeartMedia dot Com.Rudy Bryant Man, Rudy, you're the
best, dude. Let me seewhat he just sent me. I don't
even know what he sent me here, but the headline tells me it's already
crazy bryceon Deshamba. Who else ingolf would do this? And I'm digging
(58:53):
to get to the story. Whereis it? Come on story? Maybe
it's just a head I'll take it, though. The headline reads, I
got to get it back up herereal quick. How am I doing on
time? Oh yeah, Oh gosh, I'm a little bit late. I
tell you what, I'll tell youwhat Bryson did when we get back.
We'll do that all the way out. I'll tell you about Belleville Meat Market,
(59:15):
your one stop shop in Bellville forall things delicious except salad. They
don't do salads. I don't thinkyou could buy a head of lettuce in
there in the last hundred years. But what they do have is two dozen
plus flavors of delicious pecan smoked barbecue. They have beef, chicken, and
pork cut however you want, wherever, whenever you want. They serve a
(59:39):
delicious lunch and dinner seven days aweek. You could get that done.
And they have I'm trying to I'mlooking kind of in my mind, oh
the handmade to Molly's. Oh mygosh, these things are huge and they
are delicious. They have bacon wrappedcheese, stuffed halapenos, they have bacon

and wrap cheese stuff, mushroom caps, all these delicious, delicious things in
that store. And they've been doingthis for thirty something forty something years.
Actually, Belleville Meat Market also doesyear round wild game processing, in case
you didn't know that. And ifyou've listened to this program for more than
about two or three months, youknow that the best thing to do.
(01:00:21):
Get the family ready, throw themin the minivan and on the way out
there today it's going to be abeautiful day for that Wendy day to Wendy
for golf and fishing. And thenyour estimation, fine, go to Belleville
Meat Market, take the whole familyon the way out, create the list
of everything you want to bring home, then hand that over when you go
in. Then go across and takeseven steps to your left and get in
(01:00:42):
line. There'll probably be a linein the middle of the day for lunch
or whatever, early dinner, andthen go ahead and eat some barbecue out
on the patio while they're putting yourorder together, and then drive home,
eat up all that stuff, anddo it again in a week or two.
Belleville Meat Market is on It's aboutfifteen minutes north to sea. Leave
fifteen minutes off the Hempstead on Highwaythirty six, right in the middle of
town. Good windy day. Driveup there. If you don't know where
(01:01:06):
it is, drive up, getin the middle of Bellville, roll your
windows down right around till you smelldelicious pecan smoke, barbecue smoke, and
then follow your nose. Belleville Meatmarketdot COM's website Belleville meat Market dot com.
We are sports Stock seven nineties HoustonSports where you go with iHeartRadio now
(01:01:28):
now get more, Doug. It'sjust clearing up so beautifully down here.
Holy cow, what a pretty daythis is going to be. It looks
like the waterpark's going to slitter BOM'sgoing to be open as well. I
don't see anybody over there. Yet, but everything it appears to be running
at least, so who knows.Maybe they open at nine, maybe they
open at ten. I don't care. I don't think that's that's not on
(01:01:51):
my list today. But if you'rebringing the kids down here, it might
not be a bad idea. Let'sget Steve O on the phone. He's
been waiting for a little bit.Steve O. What's up man? How
are you? Good morning, Doug. I'm living dreaming right now. It's
beautiful down here, I'm telling you, man, I just passed you up
at Moody and a little job overthere at the other golf range and and
(01:02:15):
out too. Uh. I wantedto talk to you about the Moody Guardens
golf course. Man. It's it'sgorgeous out there. I went out yesterday
with all this wind and still shotin eighty two, which is not horrible.
Good for you. So yeah, basically you just called to brag,
didn't you? Kind of? Youknow it was it was a word I
got off early. It was wonderful. Oh nice, Holy cow. Definitely
(01:02:37):
try to get on that course ifyou can, Boss. I you know
I've played it a lot, Ireally have, and and I enjoyed I
really do. I don't know ifI'm tough enough to play that's the wind
is really that course is only defensebecause if there's no wind, it's it's
not that hard. But yeah, what what I'm looking at out there right
now, it's gonna there's gonna bea lot of shots on there where that
(01:03:00):
wind is gonna just it's gonna getin your head if you let it.
And the best thing you can dois should you gotta concede that you're gonna
have to club up three clubs tohit some shots, and you're gonna have
to hope that you can manage yourball down win because a lot of people
think that just down wind means automaticallymeans it just gonna go one way farther.
(01:03:22):
Yeah, it just knocks them outof the air. Yeah, exactly.
Ball ball gets going and then thewind just pushes it down instead of
out. Yeah it was, Yeah, it was definitely. Yeah. I
think it's gonna be that and maybea little more. Well, that's wonderful.
I just wanted to call and sayhello and Joy Galveston while you're here,
(01:03:45):
boss man eighty two. Huh challengeaccepted. There you go. I'm
gonna have to make a phone callssoon as we finished this program. All
right, thanks to you see youall right, audios. Mercy sakes.
That's a good that's a good scoreon that golf course. That golf course
is essentially flat as a pancake, and it's just adjacent. Fact, if
(01:04:09):
I were to hang on, Ican't go very far. That's good.
I'm not gonna I'm not gonna ripanything off the table. Caw, I
promise. I'm trying to see ifI can get far enough out here to
see the golf course across from theairport, because that's where it is now.
I think I'm a little bit,just a little bit tucked in here
too much to be able to see. I can see the end of the
(01:04:29):
sea wall down there, but yeah, i'd have to look out. If
I could look out that way,I could see it. Colend knows where
I'm pointing. But anyway, Yeah, that's this is It's at least a
two club wind right now, andit's probably gonna be a little bit more
as the sun gets a little bithigher. I really do want to go
over to the beach though. Iwant to go take a look around.
It's it's pumping pretty good, andI'll probably Oh, it doesn't matter seven
(01:04:56):
one three, I'm not gonna getin the weeds with all the all my
my whatever I'm going to do therest of this blooming day. I'm gonna
enjoy myself down here, and thenI'm gonna go back in and I'm gonna
have fun at those festival the filmsthis evening, another full round of films,
two solid hours just about or aboutan hour and a half, really
(01:05:16):
is. It's all it takes. And if, like I said, if
you're not too far from down here, and you can make it, by
all means, please come down. And if you can hunt me down before
you get in somehow I might.I might still have a couple of tickets
left. I have some in reserve, and if we can figure it out,
and I know you're coming, maybeI can help you out and get
(01:05:38):
you in here and enjoy these filmfestivals or the film festival. So Rudy
sends me this, there's just notI need more information. I'd love to
have it, says it's on hisYouTube channel. Okay. Bryceon Deshamba walks
into Walmart, spends one hundred andtwenty dollars on a June set of four
(01:06:00):
golf clubs and went out and shoteven par with them, which, honest
to goodness, that is just furtherproof of how good these guys are.
You can be good. I knowa lot of people who are good at
golf, a lot better than me, certainly, but I don't know many
(01:06:25):
of them who who could take fourgolf clubs a junior set and go out
and shoot even par with them. There's so much emphasis put on clubs these
days in club fitting, and I'mI'm the first to get in line for
club fitting. I'll I don't thinkI'll ever buy another club without being fit
(01:06:48):
properly for it, because I've beenafforded the opportunity over my career to learn
how important it is not just tohave the right head, but the right
shaft on that golf club. Andthat is the that's the engine. The
(01:07:08):
head of the golf club is morejust like the body really of a car.
The engine is that shaft, andthat's what's going to dictate individually who
could hit a particular club well andwho can't. I was I had a
really good arrangement years ago with TaylorMaid and the PR guy, the marketing
(01:07:31):
guy whom who befriended me, andI befriended him. I was his only
left handed friend, and every timethey got new gear in, every time
they got new clubs to present tothe public, he would send the left
handed versions to me. And fora while there, I had a closet
(01:07:53):
full of clubs, but I hadsome of them. I had more trouble
hitting than others. And I didn'treally your stand clubs that well back then,
and I just thought it might beme, Maybe I just can't hit
these. But I found out alittle bit later that if you have the
right shaft in that club, you'regonna hit it better. Now, it
(01:08:14):
might be it might not be perfectfor you. The head head shaft combination
might not be perfect for you ifyou don't get the whole deal done,
the whole setup checked out and fittedproperly. But it's still there's a little
little things can mean a lot ingolf, and there are just thousands of
shaft at options and hundreds of headoptions just in drivers alone. And I
(01:08:41):
learned that when they sent me anM one driver when they were shiny and
hot and the latest things that slicedbread. I got one of those,
and I took it to the rangeand I couldn't wait because I heard so
many good things about how well thisball or the club struck the ball,
and how far was going to goand how straight it was going to go,
and I couldn't hit that thing tosave my soul. Every now and
(01:09:04):
then i'd pop one really well withit, but more times than not,
it was it was all I coulddo. And all I did was I
found myself making adjustments on every swingI took, and it absolutely drove me
battye. This just couldn't be theway golf should be. And then I
don't even remember where it happened,or when or why, but I finally
(01:09:27):
got a fitting for a club, and we went through probably half a dozen
head options and at least five orsix different shaft options on each of those
heads, and all of a sudden, one starts to shine a little over
the others, and one the dispersalis a little bit narrower than the others,
(01:09:48):
the distance is a little bit betterthan the others, and like,
wow, I didn't know this waspossible. And with the right with the
right stuff, you go into aplace like Club Champion, you go into
any of these places around town.I'm trying. There's a couple of more
(01:10:09):
that I wanted to mention. Ican. One of them's falling out of
my head right now. I'll rememberas soon as we go to the break.
But the bottom line is, ifyou get a fitting done, then
the clubs you've got are gonna lastyou a long time. It's because they're
gonna last you until you change yourswing. That's what it is. You
just keep making the same swing youalways make, and if you can make
a consistent swing, then that setof clubs, that club is gonna help
(01:10:32):
you be very beneficial to you.All Right, we're gonna take a little
break here. Gosh, I'm runninga little bit late again. Sorry,
boys. All right, all theway, I don't want to tell about
Shooter's Corner Palmer Highway at twenty NightStreet down there in Texas City. Been
down there forty one, forty twoyears now, and it's owned and operated
by one of the best father sonteams for shooting sports you'll ever know,
(01:10:57):
and that is Jerry and j TK. I've met Jerry TK many many years
ago down on Bill Carter's som BurritoWrench and just what a tremendous person to
know. If you know him,you know what I'm talking about. If
you don't, you ought to tryto find a way to meetingim. Jerry
and Jay are two of the bestgunsmiths I have ever met in my entire
(01:11:17):
life, and they have helped anumber of my listeners over the years get
out of issues they were having witha favorite gun they had, or I've
had a couple of them say, look, I've already taken this to two
gunsmiths. I'm ready to throw inthe towel. Do you have any suggestions?
And I send them down there toTexas City, send them down there.
The Shooter's Corner problem solved every timeso far. The South Side.
(01:11:42):
They're just absolutely no better place totake your guns, no better place to
go buy a new gun or Ammoor optics or Camo. It's an old
school gun store. If you're lookingfor washing machines, if you're looking for
tennis shoes, go somewhere else.If you looking for shooting supplies, if
you're looking to hear some cool storiesabout the shooting sports, that's a good
(01:12:04):
place to go. The Shooters CornerTX dot Com is the website if you
wear a badge for a living, you get a discount. By the way,
the shooters Corner TX dot com. This is Sports Talk seven ninety on
the Goal with iHeartRadio. Friends. You've got to try. The conversation continues.
(01:12:24):
This as the Doug type show.We are boy. We are being
treated down here better and better. It looks like cal We got Yeah,
there are shadows on everything. Nowwe got sunshine. It is windy,
but so what. Grab the kids, throw them in the car and head
down here. I man, it'sgonna be a beautiful day to be on
(01:12:45):
the island. I was trying toget I was hoping my wife could make
this trip. She just wasn't ableto clear her decks and get down here
with me. But I certainly wishshe had. And I don't know where
my son is. I don't knowhe's going to still try to go to
surf side today or not. Ithink that seeing as how he's got a
(01:13:06):
little bit of a messed up kneethat we have to get corrected surgically towards
the end of summer. And ifhe were to go goof off and get
on those rocks and fall and twistit just right he would be out of
baseball for the rest of summer, and that would not be good. I
discouraged the trip today because I wasafraid those rocks are going to be wet,
(01:13:28):
and I'm pretty sure that they are. I've been down to surf side
enough times in my life certainly toknow that that's not going to be as
not going to be a favorable placeto be on a day of this caliber.
I need to send this to airin real quick stand by, and
I want to check my emails again. Well, I don't know what a
(01:13:51):
wedge tornado is. We didn't doany research on that, did we tell
I got to find out what awedge tornado is. That's the one that
scares out. I talked about thata minute ago. That's cool, that's
cool, that's cool. All right, I'm gonna move on. I can
do that. I did want toget back to the boats and driving so
(01:14:15):
fast. And I know a lotof guys who own fast boats. A
lot of the tournament guys, especiallythe saltwater guy. Well the too fast
boats too capable of doing one hundredmiles an hour now, a lot of
them, and even some of theflatboats. Some of the guys who fished
the tournament circuit for redfish and whatnot. They they can get those things skipping
(01:14:41):
across like a flat rock on apond. And I wonder, at what
point something's gonna happen. At somepoint, somehow that's gonna cause people to
take pause at least and think aboutthis, because water's not like a road
(01:15:02):
where and I know there are horriblecrashes on land, But if you're going
super fast across a road and youlose control a little bit, depending on
the kind of car you're in andwhat's around you, there's a kind of
sort of shot at spinning around afew times but coming to a safe stop.
(01:15:28):
That happened to me once. Actually, I got I got caught in
some some side drafts, some areally strong crosswind on I ten in a
little bitty pickup truck I was drivinga million years ago during a rainstorm,
harbying, ended up hydroplaning. Iended up hydroplaning and doing a full three
(01:15:51):
sixty and then another one eighty andI'm sliding backwards down I ten, and
fortunately my little truck bounced up ontothe kind of the middle of the road.
There was a short curve there maybetwo three inches and then about ten
feet to the barrier between the twosides of the freeway. And God had
(01:16:17):
a hand on my shoulder that day, because when my truck stopped, it
was completely out of the road, and within three or four seconds after I
had come to a stop, aneighteen wheeler came blowing by in the lane
that I had just been sliding in. And yeah, I got kind of
(01:16:38):
lucky that day. Speed on thewater usually isn't so forgiving. I've reported
over the years on I don't knowhow many horrible, horrible accents that have
occurred on the water. Boat wrecksinvolving one boat, two boats, single
(01:17:01):
occupancy, four or five people involved, more people involved if two heavily laden
boats, heavy packed boats crash intoeach other, and it just never ends
well because if you get just takefor example, if you if you bump
your head on land in a carin an accident, your head hurts,
(01:17:25):
maybe get knocked out for a littlewhile, but you still have air to
breathe. That happens on a boatand you get knocked unconscious and you sink
under the water, it was apretty good chance you're not coming up,
and so I'm not going to tellanybody to not go buy the fast boat
they want. I would just encouragethem, when they have other people in
(01:17:46):
their boat, to maybe think aboutwhat those other people's families would think if
if one of your one of yourfriends and their family member didn't make it
home that day. I can't Idon't know that I've ever even thought of
any fish that I needed to getto at one hundred miles an hour to
(01:18:08):
have a chance to catch it.And I know there's a lot of money
riding on these tournaments, and there'sthere's some pretty big egos in those games
as well, and I understand that, and a lot of these guys want
to show off what they can affordin tournament boats, and more power to
you, but dog one, justjust take into account that there are other
(01:18:30):
people out there and that there theirsafety when you're doing one hundred, their
safety is in your hands, andthere's a there's an ethical responsibility there that
comes into play, certainly, butthere's also if you're if you're driving your
boat recklessly, and that's going tobe up to a judge or a jury
(01:18:53):
if there's a serious injury involved. If you didn't do that right, you
get yourself in a lot of trouble. Seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. Email me Doug Pikeat iHeartMedia dot com. We'll take this
final break of this hour of theprogram, come back and wrap it up,
and when we do, we turnover to the nine. I'm gonna
(01:19:15):
talk to I'm going to talk toEvelyn Coles. She should be knocking on
the door here any minute now.Seven one three, two one two five
seven nine. He got plenty oftime between now on the top of the
hour. If you want to getin. On the way out, I'll
tell you about Timber Creek Golf Club. I'm getting kind of fired up looking
at this weather now, Cal Ithink I may go try to play golf.
I may have to see if Ican get a tea time. I
suspect I could on a day likethis, and I have a whole I
(01:19:39):
have a whole pouch full of golfballs, so that'll be okay. I
can go to Timber Creek. Iknow I could do that. I've m
twenty three fifty one. I'm onlyabout twenty five maybe thirty minutes tops from
there, up in Friendswood, justwest of the golf Freeway a little waist
twenty seven holes too. That's gonnabe another good place to go tee it
up today. There's there're kind ofsome there's some open holes, and then
(01:20:00):
there's some that go kind of deepinto the woods and get a little tight
and make you got a little puckerfactor in them. Make sure you want
to hit it in the right direction. Actually, those holes, the heavily
wooded holes today might play easier thanthe open ones. With the wind the
way it is, just confuse usall more and more. If you are
confused about why your golf ball goeswhere it goes, go check in with
(01:20:21):
the JJ Woods Golf Performance Center thereat Timber Creek Golf Club. I talked
to JJ this week, as amatter of fact, and told him that
at some point, really soon, and maybe on the way home from here
tomorrow, some point really soon,I'm going to swing by there and shake
his hand and maybe try to talkhim out at a lesson or so.
(01:20:42):
All right, we're going to getout of here. Timbercreekgolf Club dot com.
Go there, make a tea timeright now. I just about guarantee
you that they could have room foryou and even maybe get a foresome out
this afternoon. Who knows timber CreekGolf Club dot com is Sports Talk seven
ninety online at Sports seven ninety dotcom. Now more, Doug, Ye,
(01:21:08):
where was it? I wanted?I wanted to talk about some of
the films by the way that wereshown last night and some of the things
we got to see, just togive you an idea of what's going on
in these things and how very differentthere are. There was one from a
place called well Walker's Key that wasthe first one that was pretty cool,
and not with the first It wasn'tthe first film, but this is the
(01:21:29):
first note on my little thing here. And from there we there was the
Amazon. There was a great story, a very well written kind of a
from the It was a story ofthe one fly tournament up in Jackson,
Wyoming, which is a thing untoitself. But what the story was,
(01:21:55):
how the story was told was fromthe perspective of a that this young woman
who guides up there, Andy King'sgrandfather had flied. And it was very
well put together. It really wasin a place called Tunalik where the She's
giant brook trout, the first brooktrout I ever caught was up in New
(01:22:15):
York State on a trip when Iwas on the magazine or on the field
and stream masthead and oh boy, this is really fun. It's going to
be cool. I've never caught abrook trout. I want to do that.
And we were using I want tosay, we were using four weight
rods, which I wasn't really accustomedto. I was more of an eight
and nine weight guy for bonefish andsnook and permit and tarpet and whatnot.
(01:22:42):
And even bass I was throwing eightweight, so I could throw big old
bugs and stuff. Long and shortof it is this little brook trout sets
up on me and it eats thefly. And I did a pretty strong
strike and lifted the rod really hard, and that little brook trout just went
flying past my head like that, and oh my gosh. And the guide,
(01:23:03):
bless his heart, he goes, you don't need to set it quite
that hard, Doug. It's like, yeah, I'll sleeping in the water
next time. Seven one three, two, one two five seven ninety Email
me Doug Pike at iHeartMedia dot com. You want to jump in for the
last segment of this hour. Wecould do that, can you? Is
that okay? All right, Yeah, Evelyn Cole walked in the door just
(01:23:24):
a second ago. Howdy, howare you? I'm great, how are
you? I'm you know what.I'm all full of fly fishing films and
absolutely stunned that this day has turnedout the way it is. You know,
I have to say you have awonderful view of Moody Gardens this morning.
I'm not arguing at all. Icould I couldn't challenge you on that
statement. All right, we're backlive from Moody Gardens. The sun's out.
(01:23:46):
I've been challenged. I think itwas either Alan or or Steve.
I don't remember who called to bragabout the great round they shot yesterday,
and now Evelyn Cole's in here andand further encourage me to go play golf
in the wind. So I justmight have to do that. Evelyn,
thank you for coming in this morning. Let's get back to the conservation side
(01:24:08):
of what Moody Gardens does, andthen we'll talk about the fly fishings,
the event going on, the filmfestival going on, talk about some of
the endangered species you have over thereand why you guys have them. Even
so again, you know when Ispoke earlier about our mission. I talked
about the rehabilitation aspect, and soa part of our conservation at FIRTS is
also through rehabilitation of species. Andso we are a member of the AZA,
(01:24:32):
the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and this partnership has really helped us
be a part of the rehabilitation andprotection of endangered species. For example,
we have several here on our propertythat people come all over the world to
see, like our oslot and ourpink pigeons and the scarlett ivs. What
(01:24:54):
kind of pigeon? Pink pigeon,Oh, pink pigeon, but up to
see one of them. Well, the real showstopper is the scarlet ibis.
She is a brilliant red, beautifulbird and she's a Caribbean bird. Just
an amazing species. To ask wherethey're native, because that'd be a cool
one to see. Yeah, thatis a cool one. So you can
see those in our rainforest one ofour amazing attractions here. But there's and
(01:25:17):
if you've never been to our rainforest, have you been through? Have you
walked through? I was very small? Oh yeah, So it's like an
open when you walk into the rainforest, it's an immersive experience into the rainforest,
you get the humidity and just thefills and the smells, and it's
it's open and so we have freeflighted birds and free roaming ana. I
mean, it's very cool. Sowhen you see that scarlet iapis, she's
(01:25:40):
literally walking around. So just areally, really great experience. But you
know, that's just part of againthe great work that we do when we
encourage our guests to come and bringtheir families because it's an educational experience.
You can have so much fun andjust learn so much at the same time.
And then also going back to thatconservation just you know, understanding at
such a young age how important itis to protect the world that we live
(01:26:03):
in, this species that rom theplanet. You mentioned the ocelot, And
last night when Joel and I weregetting started, there's the point in my
presentation and just let people know thatthere's going to be an animal coming into
the studio or coming into the theater, and just to see how the crowd
(01:26:24):
would react, I said, youknow, I just said to let you
know, at about seven o'clock we'regoing to be bringing an anal in here.
And I turned to Joel and Isaid, are they bringing the tiger
or the bear, and you couldjust heard the air drop out of the
place. Oh. I told youthat. If you're up close to the
front, just sit back and bevery still. And then they were all
just looking around waiting for some giantthing to come trotting it. Well,
(01:26:46):
when we talk about our rainforest andour free roaming animals, we talk a
lot about our kimono dragon. Oh, and we're like, okay, we
keep him. He's enclosed. Wedon't want people to, you know,
put a muzzle on. Yeah,he's a muzzle, but you can definitely
see him up close and personal. But he's so big too, He's so
so enormous. So I got togo see him. Yeah, it's pretty
(01:27:09):
I've seen him on TV, youknow, we've seen him, Yeah,
but I've never seen one live.Yeah. So yeah, we have the
kimono dragon. Then we also havethe ocelot, both in clothes, so
no danger there. But you willsee monkeys and our sloth. It's like
kind of being at work. Yeah, I got plenty of those were our
(01:27:30):
work, all right, evil,And let's go to the fly fishing festival?
Shall we tell us about that?Where whose idea was this? Do
you have you gotten enough history onit to know where this origin is now?
I don't have a lot of historyon it, but I do know
that this was the brainchild of ourCEO, johnsent Okay, and then he's
worked collectively with local partners to reallybring this to life. And I know
(01:27:55):
that it's grown significant year over year, and it's just something that they want
to keep doing just because it bringsso much community and spirit fly fishing.
You know, new to fly fishing. But from what I'm not in Arkansas
anymore. I'm not in Arkansas anymore. You are right. I am an
Arkansas girl. But I told youeven in Arkansas, we didn't fly fish.
We bass fished. Yeah, wellthat to be different. Just stop
(01:28:20):
just right there. I'm going tohelp you. I bass fish with a
fly rod all the time. Really, yeah, yeah, yeah, you
can do that. It's so muchtechnique and skill. I just don't know
if I could. It's easy tocast and real. But when I see
fly fishermen, fisher people you know, do their thing, it's just so
(01:28:40):
much to it. It feels likeI don't know it does it doesn't take
strength what you have to do.And I've told a million people this eve,
and it'll help you, and it'llencourage you to go ahead and try.
Women, first of all, arethe best students for the fly casting
instructors, because guys tend to wantto overpower the equipment of strength. The
harder you throw it, the fartherit's going to go. Whereas a fly
(01:29:04):
rod. Fly rod does the workfor you, and all you have to
do is just lift it here andgo to here, and that whole big
piece of fly line is going togo all the way behind you. And
then as that rod load's going behindyou, you push forward and it's like
a pole vaulters pole. It throwsit back out in front of you.
(01:29:24):
And the more gentle, the moregraceful you are, the better you're going
to be able to do it.So you have no problems at all coming
ahead, Douck, you lost meat grace. I have no finesse.
At the end of the cast,I would be wrapped up seventeen times like
a fly staying. There were someguys in the films last night. It
(01:29:44):
showed it was It was really refreshingto see this actually in one of the
films. These guys are just they'repretty pretty redneck, but they're fly fishermen
and they're hanging up flies in treesand doing everything that every fisherman, every
fly fisherman ever has done a milliontimes, but you don't expect to see
And that was that was really good. It was kind of funny. Yeah,
my dad used to get so upsetwith me because the first cast I'd
(01:30:08):
always get stuck on something and bagnabbit. I got a friend like that.
I've taken him fishing a few timesand he backlashing reel and I've gotten
better over the years. I reallydo enjoy fishing, and that's what I
love about the swive fishing. Andyou asked me a question last night about
you know, what I hope tolearn because this is my first experience,
and just from everything that I've seenand you know, watched in my research
(01:30:31):
and watching the films last night,I just see such a sense of community
and celebration of friendship and that issomething that I can get behind. And
I think that you know all ofthe skill and the technique. We just
have to laugh at ourselves, rightbecause y'all have just like on the golf
course, your friend shot in eightytwo, but we've all we've all shot
like a hungred and yeah, sothere's bad days and there's good days.
(01:30:56):
But you know, at the heartof it is just the relaxation and getting
away and connecting with me. Itis. And one of the interesting things
about this film festival is we're sittingthere in Galveston, Texas, and we're
looking at all these destinations around theworld. And what a lot of people
who are from Southeast Texas don't realizeis how many people come here from around
(01:31:23):
the world because they come here tocatch the fish that we have, whereas
we're sitting here thinking, gosh,we don't have anything really fun. Let's
go over there. The grass isalways greener on the other side. One
of the films last year featured Texasjackfish because for a lot of people in
this just right in this region,a jackfish, Oh, they're not good
(01:31:45):
to eat, they're no fun tocatch, they take too long to catch
because they're so strong. Well,if you're into sport fishing, you kind
of want to challenge. You don'twant something to just roll over like a
wet sock, like a walleye.I've never caught a walleye, and I
don't care because all I've heard anybodyI've ever talked to is they don't fight
at all. They bite and thenthey quit and that's it. They just
(01:32:09):
hang on to the line. Oh, take it out of my mouth.
You got me? What's the funin there? Yeah? Exactly. That's
like like throwing your line out andgetting it hooked by an F one race
car coming by. It's fantastic,it's exciting. Gets going to Oh I'm
fired up. Are you going tobe over there? Able to come over
tonight? I am. I'm goingto be here tonight. I'm going to
(01:32:29):
take a break this afternoon and andplug off. You know, I'm not
a golf I'm not a call foryou know where you need to be.
You need to be over there somehowsomeway getting a fly casting lesson. Okay,
I almost sign myself up for that. Walk over there. I promise
you you will not be I haveno idea. Let's see here, I'm
looking about my tea time. Probablyit's the site to be seen to watch
(01:32:53):
me fly cast. I'm going totry that at least once this weekend.
I really want you to do that. I encourage you to do it because
it's totally different. It's like yousaid, you bass fished up there.
You can bass fish with that flyrod just as easily as you can.
So much to learn, so much, to learn so easy. So what
I was surprised was I always knewGalveston for saltwater fishing, I never knew
(01:33:14):
it for fly fishing. So isGoalbiston a good destination for fly fishing Galbison
brings. It's a very good destination. It's certainly a good starting point.
This base system here is good forred fish on flyfish. Fly fishing is
not salt water or fresh water. It's both okay, And so the redfish
here are pretty easy to find andcatch on a fly rod. The speckled
(01:33:39):
trout up this far up the coastit's a little more difficult. But the
farther down you go, the moreshallow water there is. And when you
introduce the shallower water, you introducesite fishing. You just actually you're walking
around or right or sliding along inthe boat with somebody polling you behind you,
(01:34:00):
looking for those fish, and thenyou're casting straight to a fish you
can see, and it's pretty dogone exciting when that first time you ever
take that fly rod and cast andyou're stripping the thing back a little bit,
and that fish starts showing some interestand they come over there and you
actually get to watch them just eatit and then take off like that.
Wow. Yeah, you won't quiteget that bug one time. No,
(01:34:23):
you're giving it to me. I'mgetting the bug, catching it, Okay,
catching fire over. Oh, Ihave got to take a little break
here. I'll let you go.Okay, I'm not gonna not gonna hold
your feet to the fire and makeyou sit around here. You need to
go get ready for your fly casting. I do. I gotta go do
that. You're going to see thefilm tonight, I am. I'm gonna
be there tonight and watching the films. And I also think that we are
(01:34:44):
going to do a presentation today andsupport our friends at Good Fly Good.
Yeah, we weren't able to dothat last night. Yeah, so I
got hung up somewhere. What amazing, What an amazing organization, And we
are so proud that this event, you know, helps us support that organization
and their efforts too. I don'tknow how you keep up with all the
things you support and take care ofall the animals. And yeah, it's
not me, it's not mean there'sa bunch of people here. You're not
(01:35:08):
doing it by yourself, not bymyself. I'm not superwoman today. I'm
only sixty days in sir. That'sokay, No, that's just fine.
Well you've made you've made good useof your sixty day like in this year.
Thank you so much for having me. Oh yeah, well, thank
you for hosting us. Yeah,we're truly enjoying this. Right, all
right, I've got to take alittle break here. On the way out,
(01:35:28):
I will remind you that Carter's Countryis a great place to go.
If you're thinking about something for Mother'sDay and you've got a wife or a
daughter or an aunt or whoever whois qualified to get a president on that
day, maybe maybe a concealed carryclass at Carter's Country help them feel a
little safer. Yeah, there's somethumbs up over there across the table.
(01:35:49):
Humh concealed carry. It doesn't meanyou're going to ever have to use that
weapon of years. In fact, you hope you don't. But if you
do, and if you need toput text yourself, and the world's kind
of getting to be a little scarierplace every day, it seems like a
concealed carry permit gives you not onlythe skills to do it, but the
(01:36:11):
knowledge to know when and where youcan and can't use that weapon of yours.
The parameters are very, very trickyin some ways. In the law.
We do have in Texas the rightto protect our friends, our families,
other people, even if you're outand some nut job comes along.
But you need to know that lawand you need to do what's right to
(01:36:33):
get yourself out of harm first andthen make sure that you haven't done anything
wrong illegally. And that's where theseclasses come in. You spend some time
in the classroom, you learn allof that, and then by doing this
at Carter's Country up on the trenchwe side of town, the north side
of town there where they've got therange, you walk right outside and take
your proficiency test, which is nothard. It intimidates a lot of people
(01:36:56):
to think, oh, I'm nota very good shot. But for these
purposes, all you have to dobasically is hit a poster board at twenty
yards and if you can't do that, then take a lesson a couple of
them beforehand, so you get comfortablewith your firearm and you know you can
do that. Too. You canregister in person at any of Carter's Country's
locations, or you can call themand they'll set it up for you.
(01:37:18):
All those classes go on up thereat the tresh Week store. They're on
weekends and very convenient and a verygood really probably be one of the potentially
best gifts you could ever give momon Mother's Day. Two eight one four,
four three, eight three ninety threetwo eight one, four, four
three, eight three nine three. This is Sports Talk seven ninety, Facebook
(01:37:43):
dot com slash sports Talk seven ninety. Back to the Doug Type Show.
I am gonna accept the challenge.I always got dropped in my lap a
minute ago. What what he shoot? Eighty two? Is that what he
said? Eighty two? Okay,I'm gonna go post an eighty over there
at Moody Gardens. Even if Ihave to stop after seven holes, I
don't care. It's a pretty day. Holy cow. Let's talk to boys,
(01:38:08):
see what's on his mind before Iget over to the New Orleans leader
Board. What's up, boys,Forest? I know who that is?
Fisherman. Hey, I got astory. I know a guy. I
know a guy, Come on,pat pro Forest, Hey, exactly real
(01:38:29):
quick on on my on my phone. Pro tip of the day. You
know boat keys. You know alot of people travel they forget to take
their boat key out of their ignitionand their boat. And I've only had
mind come out once. So asa rule, if I'm traveling, if
I'm local, I keep it inthe boat. But if I'm traveling like
Hope today, I'm going to alittle gated lake near me, I'm already
in leftkin nice. I'll take myI'll take my boat key out, put
(01:38:53):
it in my pocket, and thenI'll put it back in the boat when
I get there. But last timeI was up here, when I was
up to Lake Nclage two weeks ago, I left my boat key at home.
So as a rule, I've alwayskept a boat. I've always kept
an ignition boat key on my truckkeys. And that saved my buck,
because yes, it's saved my bucks. I was on bakends, I went
(01:39:15):
to get out of the boat onthe whole crap. My keys were sitting
on the counter at the house. But I have an ignition key on my
truck keys as a backup, soit saved my butt. Thank goodness,
but good for you, but uhbut uh real quick on fly fishing.
Yeah, go ahead, yeah,do that. And then I got a
question for you. Go ahead, okay, Like I said, my daddy,
UH did a lot of fly fishingway back in the day on Lake
(01:39:36):
Houston for crappie. So some ofthe first cush iver caught was on lake
liversit and blue kill fishing with alittle bitty tiny black dad or a little
bitty teddy green frog. I usedto kill blue kill. I lived to
a plot rock. Wasn't that greata cast, And I fought myself in
the back of the head several times. But UH got good at that and
uh, but but it was fun. It was something you know in the
(01:39:58):
lake. I'm going to you know, if you got some fly fishing gear.
This lake is gin clear, loadedwith you know, small easy to
catch bass, and it's loaded withme readier, readier sunfishing way over a
pound. Oh my gosh, Yeah, I want some of that. Holy
cow. Yeah, I got mycroppery road in the boat today. I'm
going to try to scope up somethingand readier today. If the bass ain't
agreeing with me. Man, Butyou had a question. You talk about
(01:40:21):
getting hit in the head with afly. I was down in the Shadle
of Islands years ago, punching anine weight with a lead eyed little streamer,
a lead eyed clauser and just tryingto punch it into a wind about
like what we got right now.And I was trying to get it out
to this little ledge where everything felloff, and I reared back and just
(01:40:44):
pushed really hard forward to get thatfly a little farther out than I had
been, and that wind pushed itacross and it hit me right in the
back of the head. I thoughtI'd been hit with a hammer. Oh
my god, that isn't hurt.My bunk cap saved me many times.
Oh yeah, yeah, I'm gonnastart wearing a helmet. Yeah, oh
yeah, so I got it foryou. Yeah, we had we had
(01:41:06):
a little talk earlier this morning abouthow fast everybody's driving boats on lakes,
on the bays and whatnot. AndI heard that. I heard that guy.
Yeah, so what do you thinkabout that? Well, my my
roll of thoe, I use whatI call one hundred yard rule. If
(01:41:27):
I'm more than one hundred yards fromme, you know, my boat runs
seventy four. I rarely run itthat fast. I got there are three
times that I run my boat, but I let it eat so to speak.
Yeah, that'said if I if I'mtaking off from a tournament. And
what people need to understand it ifmy boat runs seventy four and yours run
seventy three, that don't sound likemuch. But if we're running to the
(01:41:51):
same spot sixty miles up the lake, I'm going to get there before you.
Yeah, I'm gonna I'm going toclaim that spot. So that's what.
And you know, you try tomake that last cast. So I'm
running wide open to get back tothe way, and I'm trying to get
that. You know how bass fishing, one one cast can do it and
the o the other time that Ilet it eat, so to speak.
And I do it for about amile. When I'm out like today,
(01:42:12):
i'm out fishing, I'm on asmall lake. But even though I'm on
a small lake, I can gothere and run the dam so before I
go in every day, and it'sjust good for your motor. I'll light
that thing up wide open for abouta mile mile and a half, then
I'll shut it down. I'm normallyrunning fifty but as far as going and
by people, I use one hundredyard rule. Now, I bet it's
(01:42:33):
smaller creeks where people where people willwave you by, or I'll wave people
by and I'll tell you a quickstory. Up on the livy sit and
keep a put creeks at a prettywide spot in this one area. And
there's this guy, you know, way off on the left of you know,
he's out there to Jesus sized Johnbo with this kid. And you
know, I come around the corner, I see him up there. You
know, he's a quarter mile upahead from him. Still, I get
(01:42:55):
on the far side of the lake. I'm running about fifty to fifty five.
You know, I'm up on padand you know, run on by
him. You know, I'm agood hundred yards from me. I run
on buy him and I go abouta half a mile. Passive is shut
down. Well I shut down, start getting my croppies stuff up, and
here comes this guy in this boatpulls up to me and starts dropping f
bob all this kind of stuff. He's got this on eight nine year old
kid in the boat with him.There. Yeah, you big mass boat
(01:43:17):
guys, blah blah, goh,y'all just take you own the lake,
I said, sir, I said, I was a safe distance from you.
I said, you have to understandif I slow down, I'm going
to blow your boat up all thebake with the wakes. If I go
by at this speed, I'm notmaking awake. I'll make less of awake
at this speed that I will fast. I said, what concerns me,
poor, is that you got yourson in the boat. And I said,
(01:43:40):
is this the way you're talking infront of your son all the time.
You don't need to worry about mouth. Yeah, And he's like,
you don't need to worry about thef and way I talked to my half
a ton and I'm like sure.I'm like, so he kind of got
right, I said, Sarah,I said, we can settle this water
two eggs. I said, Ican apologize, you can go back to
fishing. I'll even show you agood spot to catch crappie because you weren't
on a good spot. I justput you on some fish. Or we
(01:44:01):
can step up on this bake andyour kid can watch people. You could
cuss about that. I know, but but but this guy, and I'm
sure you run across. You justgot that one guy pushing your button.
So I was like, sir,I said, I'll apologize, I'll buy
you the rest of the day.But you know, you got that one
(01:44:23):
guy. And I'm not saying theguy called earlier is one of them guys.
I've seen guys cuss out boats onRaver that are two miles across the
lake. Look at that butthole outthere. I said, he's two miles
out there. If he kills himself, so what. And he's done what
he wants to do. But youknow, you get into the Creek's office,
you got etiquette, you know, like I uh, I know,
I know, you got to getyour break. I had how fast somebody
(01:44:45):
drives as long as they're not drivingby so close that that it's a threat
to somebody else. If you're justlike you said, if you're a quarter
mile across the lake, you canset the lake speed record for as I'm
concerned, because you're only in dangerin yourself. Uh And and it didn't.
Conversely, some of the people whowho aren't some of the people who
(01:45:08):
don't understand this, don't realize thatthat you've you've got a right to run
the speed you want to run, just do it safely. That's where I
am with it, you know,Yeah, I mean last. Let's little
quick quick story ticked the second upI was. I was the way up
a Rocky Creek, which is RockyCreek. It was the fork off lake
off of kick the Boot. SoI'm up there fishing. I'm throwing the
(01:45:29):
zero spook top water fishing. Jetski runs right by me ten feet from
my boat. Oh boy, SoI kicked me off. So a few
minutes later I heard him coming. So I had that ride in my hand
and at the corner of my eye, my backs to him. When I
kind of see him out the cornerof my eye, I just zipped that
xeru spook across that creek because itwas that narrow. He let go of
that, He let go at jetski. Yeah, we had words. We
(01:45:51):
had words. Oh my gosh. All right, partner, will be safe
up there. Don't run over anybodyfor us. I said, I'll send
you some shirt. Oh yeah, shoe, send me some. I know
I'm fired up. You'll get them. I know you will. All right,
man, I see, all right, we got to take a little
break here. Holy cow. I'lltalk about some golf when we get back,
(01:46:13):
and I'll go through some of theseemails. I've just gotten to.
There's one time I definitely want toget to from Allen. You listen to
the Doug Pike Show. We aredown at Moody Gardens for this fly Fishing
film festival that continues tonight. Ifyou can make it down here tonight and
you want to bring a buddy andy'all want to come see these films,
shoot me an email. I gota couple of tickets left and I'm not
(01:46:35):
scared to use them. Doug PikeShow. We'll be back in a minute.
This is Sports Talk seven ninety aHouston sports fan on air and on
Facebook at contact back to the DougPike Show. Our producers will let us
know when the microphones go live againand go hot. And I just get
(01:46:57):
tickled every time I hears somebody backover there ago you're hot, and I
haven't heard that in a long time. It's been a while. Why,
thank you, I've just said thanksfor that. Yeah, okay, I
can take that. All right,we're back. We're still down at Moody
Gardens and I am I'm changing mymind. An hour and a half ago,
I think you probably couldn't You couldn'thave gotten me to go play golf.
(01:47:20):
Today on a bed. It wasmisty. It was just not pretty.
And the palm trees are just barelyhanging on to their fronds. They're
about to lose their coconuts. Andnow it looks like a beautiful sunny day
on Galazan Island. And I don'tknow that I'm going to do anything but
play golf. I might even takea fishing rode over there. There's a
(01:47:42):
couple of places on that golf coursewhere if you know what you're looking for,
and it's the right day and theright time and everything lines up,
you'll see tailing redfish along some ofthose places where actually where I've hit golf
balls before, which is that's that'sa horse of a different color. We'll
talk about that later. Let meget back to Oh, I got Rick
on the phone. Let's go then, Rick, what's up? Hey,
(01:48:09):
d morning, Hey, real quicktalking about tornadoes and I always find those
fascinating. I have experienced a few. No, no, nothing like you
know what I think you described.Yeah, but I can. I'm gonna
(01:48:30):
give you a tornado in a ina golf story at the same time.
Okay, now this is this iskind of a question for you. Well,
it's kind of we're gonna play kindof what would you do? Okay,
all right, do you do youremember water Rood National Golf Course up
off the Western Honspital towards Livingston orlate Livingston. Yeah, I do.
(01:48:50):
There was a that was fabulous track, probably best to work in one hundred
and fifty miles of us in myopinion. Okay, it just it just
got built before it's time and runout of money. But it may still
be there. I don't know. But anyways, we used to go up
there once a week and me andsome guys and I remember what year this
(01:49:12):
was. This was in nineteen eightyseven, because I just remember. I
know why I remember it. Andof course you know it's it's East Texas.
It's tiny woods, you know, one hundred foot trees. You know,
it's real hilly, et cetera,et cetera. So we're sitting there
on a tea box and we canhear this storm. I mean it's cracking,
(01:49:33):
you know, the thunder and lightningbam bam. And we said we're
gonna sit right here for a minute. Well then all of a sudden,
we see this stuff come flying overlike roofing metal in all this gosh,
and we'reing four carts and everybody,We're all look at what do we do?
(01:49:55):
Well? Two of them took off, one of them run off in
the middle of the woods, andone up I think back. One run
off in the middle of the stairway, went down the hill in the bottom
of the hill, and so thatleft me sitting there and I'm thinking,
what do I do want to dohere? This is getting ugly. I
felt like my cart was going toturn over. So if you had the
(01:50:16):
charge to run go down low orget off in the deepest woods you could
and hope nothing fell on you orlanded on you. What would you do
if you did? I mean,it come up on you, just like
your snappy fingers. The story I'vealways heard is go low, getting a
ditch somewhere and let it go overyou. And on a very small tornado
(01:50:40):
out in Katie once actually during agoose hunt, Uh, some guys had
to do that. I was abouttwo fields over and we saw this little
tornado go through there and they literallydid go jump in a ditch and it
didn't bother them, it went rightover them. It was pretty interesting to
hear that. You know that thatthat really happened then worked. I don't
(01:51:00):
know that you're not going to outruna tornado if it's coming at you.
And if you run into the woodsand it's a really big tornado, it's
just gonna start throwing trees at you. I don't know if i'd want to
be around all those limbs coming down. Really, So everything you just said
went through my mind in about thirtyseconds, and I've made the decision to
(01:51:24):
I'm running down this cart path downhillas fast as I can because I was
the far three and I know there'sa creek that goes into the lake in
front of the far three and Iwould find myself in my court. And
I took off down that thing andI jumped out of that cart and I
just let that cart goo. Imean when I jumped out, I was
(01:51:45):
running and which I was going underneaththe bridge from the cart path. But
I'm gonna tell you truth, Idid not. I was twenty feet away
from that bridge. Is really anywater building in that in that creek?
It was a dry creek and listenedlangrel horse. Yeah, I got twenty
(01:52:08):
feet from that bridge, and Isaid this as far as I'm going.
I ain't moving. I'm just gettingdown as low as I can and duck.
And that's not all I do,man, I know, and fortunately
we all we all got out there. But I know my thought was stay
in the woods. You know, you know, one hundred foot four or
(01:52:30):
five thousand pound treefall on me orbrock the road, I can't get out
way back. On a golf course, I can take off running. I
mean that when you got to makedecisions like that, especially when you know
that there's stormy weather on a golfcourse, you know, there's not a
lot of places to go hide thatare safe. Anyway, I just gonna
(01:52:53):
share that, but I hit therewas one other guy down there, so
I think me and him probably madethe best decision, and I think he's
made I caught you, will youvote You both made it through, so
it seems to me I would guessyou did make the right decision. Rick,
Thanks for the call. Now,Now with cell phones and weather wraps,
(01:53:14):
it's a lot easier to say,you know what, IM away right
here for a little bit anyway, all right, partner, Yeah, great,
good to hear from you. Seeyou later, audios. All right,
good heavens. Oh no, Igot a couple of minutes, I
got an email from Robert. Robertsent me pictures of a downburst, one
(01:53:35):
of those phenomenons that happened rarely, but when they do, they're spectacular.
And the photographs he got were justamazing. Of this thing out I believe
it was at his dear least, let me scroll back up and read that
again. Having trouble making this mouthwork over here. It didn't work at
all on the glass table. SoI've got a little piece of Manila folder
(01:53:59):
here. That's word. Uh yeah, West Texas at the deer Lease.
Oh my gosh. There's one reallypretty picture actually, he said that he
snatched out of a video that heshot of all of this, and it's
a beautiful there's sun behind it,really good coloration on it, and a
nice little lightning bolt coming out ofthe clouds and all reaching all the way
(01:54:20):
to the ground, with that downburstkind of in the background. That's another
thing I wouldn't want to be aroundwithout a double XL heavy duty umbrella over
my head. That's some weather fascinatesme and also scares the bejeepers out of
me if it gets a little tooclose. I don't want any part of
that stuff. Seven one three, two one two five seven ninety Email me
(01:54:44):
Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com. Letme go back to the Zurich Classic leader
board on going over in New Orleansleaders see if they've gotten out yet.
Yeah, well, yeah, someof these guys are out there. They're
already halfway around the track. That'sgood. Phillips and Bridgeman and a lot
of these names you're not gonna recognizebecause a lot of them, a lot
(01:55:08):
of the big boys don't play. Some of you will, some you want
all tight at thirteen under par. These teams Phillips, Bridgeman, Norman Campillo,
You, Pan rye Lipski, Mceilroyand Lowry. There's a couple of
guys we know, huh. AlsoThompson, Novak, Brim and Hubbard and
(01:55:31):
those. There's seven teams at thirteenunder par right now, Crafton Tway,
Garnet, Straka, Gim and Kim, Wallace and Olison, Tearing and Skins,
John's and Palmer. Oh my gosh, there's more. There's a bunch
of them at twelve and even moreat eleven. They are bunched up on
(01:55:55):
that leader board. As I wouldexpect. Actually, so really you've got
you've got thirty four teams within twoshots of the lead or on it.
That's some that's quite impressive. Igotta say type for eighteenth, type for
eighteenth. Then it goes to thirtyfifth place. So thirty four teams and
(01:56:16):
eighteenth place is only two shots outof the lead. That's impressive. Great
tournament, great place to play golf. I have history over in New Orleans.
My grandmother lived there very close towhere they're playing golf actually throughout her
life. And the funny story aboutthe home in which she was she and
she raised my dad actually, andshe and her husband raised my daddy.
(01:56:41):
My grandfather on that side passed awaywhen I was a very young baby,
so I never did get to meethim and never did get to know him,
and I'm sorry I didn't get todo that actually. But the bottom
line what I was going to tellyou is the interesting aside to that is
that that little home over there, just a simple shotgun house, New Orleans
style, up on blocks because everythingfloods. It's under sea level basically,
(01:57:04):
and there's a porch on the front, big steps going up to it.
Like every house in that neighborhood itwas. I bet they didn't pay fifteen
thousand dollars for that house when theybought it. And the most recent evaluation
I saw online was something like ninehundred and seventy five thousand dollars because the
(01:57:25):
location, and I guess just becausethe thing is still standing. I don't
know. Seven one three two onetwo five seven ninety. Let me check
email one more time and then I'mgoing to go back to just a little
bit more golf stuff I want to. I'll talk about playing golf in the
wind. I talked about it alittle bit earlier, and I've actually had
to do a good bit of that. The best round I've shot this year
(01:57:45):
actually was on a two club windday, which is what this is going
to be. And there is significantdifference in your in your approach shots,
in your in your balls off thets, to whether you're hitting upwind or
down wind off the tee. Hittingdown wind, you're gonna pick up a
lot. But your iron shots, the ones that are spinning more, they
(01:58:10):
tend to I don't know, ifI don't know how many people will understand
this analogy. If you've ever ifyou've ever played a lot of baseball,
or watched a lot of baseball.A pop up hit almost straight up into
the air, has a ton ofbackspin on it, and it goes up
and then it will actually make ifyou actually drew the path out, it'll
(01:58:30):
kind of make a loop at thetop and dead air, and then it
will move forward. It's like ajust like a little gentle loop that moves
forward. And that same phenomenon occurswith a golf ball with a lot of
spin on it, i e.Short irons and whatnot in the air,
and in so doing, the windalmost pushes it back down faster, it
(01:58:55):
accelerates the the reduction of to aminimums. That's a kind of an oxymoron
sounding thing. But into the wind, you're gonna have to hit it a
lot harder. Downwind, you don'treally get tremendous benefit on your short iron
shots, not like you think you'renot going to hit a if you hit
(01:59:17):
a pitching wedge one hundred yards now, you're not going to hit it one
hundred and thirty even if it's blowinghard. That's turning out to be far
less interesting on the radio than Ithought it might be. I'm gonna shut
up. Why don't we just takea break here. Okay, we'll take
a little break here. We'll beright back. I'm live at Moody Gardens.
(01:59:41):
If you want to go to theFly Fishing Film Festival tonight, I
actually do have a few tickets, and I will accommodate until I run out
of tickets to per person. I'mhappy to do that for you. If
you want to come on down andenjoy these films, yeah, we'll do
that. If you want to andcome down and join me, and I'll
(02:00:01):
be back in a couple of minutes. We'll wrap this one up. Doug
Pike Show from Life from Moody Gardens. This is Sports Talk seven ninety breaking
sports news on Facebook twenty four orseven. We'll get that information to them.
This is the Doug Pike Show,Final segment of the final hour.
Holy cow. And I promise CalI'm gonna tell you, Melvin, I'm
(02:00:23):
telling you, I promise I willnever try to talk about playing golf in
the wind again on the radio. That just the deeper I got into it,
the worst it sounded. Why amI saying this out loud? It's
just it's nobody can relate to thisexcept except somebody who's really, really a
golfer, and they already know whatI'm trying to say, and they probably
are laughing at me trying, juststruggling, just struggling, trying to get
(02:00:45):
the message across. So so backto the New Orleans format, it's team
play over there. Just two personteams though, two man teams. And
that kind of does lead me intoa little bit about what's coming to Golf
Club of Houston in June. Thefirst I think it's the first weekend in
June actually, and that is thelive Golf event that we've drawn here.
(02:01:10):
And I don't know, I don'tknow how many years we'll get it.
I don't know if we'll get iteven a second time. Who knows.
When I talked to the people fromLive Golf, I had three of them
on a zoom call actually this pastweek and trying to work out some stuff
with them, and they were theyheld their cards pretty close to the vest
(02:01:30):
on whether this would become an annualstop or whether it would just be a
one and done. I'm hoping thatwe actually generate enough attention for them and
draw a big enough crowd to Houston, which lord knows, we have enough
golfers and people who are interested inthis to really put on a good show
for him as from a spectator standpoint, and I planned to spend some time
(02:01:55):
out there and really understand it alot better. I'm working on getting a
couple of player interviews. What didI do? Who is it? Robert?
Let's get him on the phone then, see this is this is why
I wasn't worried Melvioyn, because Iknew it's a lot easier than trying to
whisper to me my hearings halfway goneanyway from all the shooting I've done over
my life, Robert, what's up, buddy? How about those pictures?
(02:02:19):
I said, you, holy cowman? Where was that downburst? Well
it's our dear Lisa is uh northof a little bit north of Comstock.
You go into coffee? Okay, come back? Oh no, I feel
(02:02:43):
like what was your name Rose onthe Titanic talking to Jack? Come back?
Come back? No, we're notcoming back. Well, if he
gets back on the phone, justlet me know and I'll pop him back
up here. Anyway. The livegolf event is also team golf, and
before I get any play on thephone, I think probably next weekend.
I am going to get somebody fromLive Golf on the phone with us to
(02:03:08):
explain to me that scoreboard that lookslike a totem pole that accompanies all of
their broadcasts that I frankly don't reallyunderstand. And I want to become a
fan of this. I want tosee how it works, especially now that
they're going to be right in ourown backyard up there at Golf Club of
Houston. Okay, bringing back up, Okay, try again, right.
(02:03:32):
I don't know if that was myfault or what happened, but it doesn't
matter. And so we're so yougo north of Del Rio, I'm you
know, in alf ninety and theComstock and then it's out that way.
He's about six and a half hours, seven hours, and we started to
go out. We were out thereworking on stuff and we were gonna go
(02:03:55):
out and shoot some guns. Andthis door came up and we decided,
you know this, wait a fewminutes, and then it kind of passed.
We went on out, got upon top of one of our heels
up there's got a got a cisternon it, and kind of set up
hide and watch that thing go acrossand the video we had to shoot a
(02:04:16):
video to get lighting. We knewwe could see the lighting, but you
never could catch it. Yeah, shot the video and then you couldn't see
it in the video. So buddyMike took it, stuck it on his
on his computer because this was alldone with iPhones. Stuck it on his
computer. And you can see there'stwo two lightning bolts in there. One
of them looks like it's going groundto air and other one looks like he's
going air to ground. It's prettypretty wild looking. I was gonna tell
(02:04:41):
you another story we got. Wewere out there one time and the storm
came up. Of course you cansee forever. Storm came up and at
night time and it started hailing, and it hailed for about forty five minutes,
and it was being held and itone of the guys had, you
know, all our our compound upthe everybody has trailers, uh, mobile
homes and stuff and uh one ofthe guys had a newer mobile home and
(02:05:04):
the side of it looked like somebodyhad been hitting golf balls at it.
It is. It was absolutely itwas just solid holes. He had to
have it reskin. Uh should haveshouldn't let me get those golf balls out.
I probably missed every shot could lookbrand new. It look brand new,
Yeah it was. It was prettywild. But yeah, I took
(02:05:25):
video and the power went off andI'm like, this is not good.
And actually a tornado. I mean, when it's doing that, You're like,
there's a tornado here somewhere, anduh the tornado actually went over us
and uh landed in uh down inComstock and did a little bit of damage
from mercy but uh anywow, Robert, Yeah, the music means without a
(02:05:47):
roll. All right, that's allright, buddy, all right, okay,
thank you. All right, we'regonna have to check out. I
am gonna go get my golf shoesout and maybe hit on over to Moody
Gardens Golf Club and play a littlegolf over there. I'm gonna make it
up to the beach for sure.I'll get a good picture. I'll send
it to you. I'll be backhere probably tomorrow morning. I may just
(02:06:09):
broadcast from here one more morning. This is just such a beautiful place to
be. Come down see the filmfestivals. If you want to do the
film festival tonight, if you wantto at Moody Gardens. I do have
a few tickets if you want them, let me know. Get outside,
have a little fun with your families. Turned into a really pretty day.
When's not gonna hurt anybody. I'llsee tomorrow. Stay safe, Audios
