Jim starts the show by talking about all the damage after Hurricane Beryl. We then get some calls about roof repair, the power grid, an A/C drain, the change from generator to power process, a recommendation for fixing a concert tile roof, a solar power system, and more. one three two one two five eightseven four. That's seven one three two

(02:15):
one two five eight seven four.Look, we we just got done with
the hurricane and last weekend when wewere talking when it was coming, you
know, I was saying my biggestfear was it was going to come up
the coast a little bit and comein through Galveston didn't quite come all the
way to Galveston. But I alsosaid I didn't think it would be that

(02:39):
big of deal because it was supposedto be just a Class one and uh,
you know, it wasn't going tobe dropping, getting stuck and dropping
all the rain like we've had withother storms. For a Class one.
The amount of damage this storm didis unbelievable. I don't know if it

(03:00):
was misclassed or what, but I'vebeen thinking about it, you know,
all week. Why did we haveso much power outage? And I think
there's multiple reasons for it, oneof which is, you know, it
used to be they had companies outtrimming trees all the time to keep them

(03:23):
off the lines, and if youthink about it, you don't see that
being done near as much. Thelines were just covered with tree branches and
stuff, and so I think wehad a lot more lines go down from
that than we normally would. Iknow, we had the big trand big
lines go down and stuff as well, but I think that's a lot of

(03:46):
it is just we're letting the treesgo a lot bigger. But I also
then this is something I've brought upin the past. I think municipalities have
a little bit of issue here aswell well. In their codes they require
these darn trees sometimes in areas wherea tree just plane shouldn't be because of

(04:09):
power lines, and as the treegrows up and gets into the lines,
it causes problems. And you know, I get it. We're trying to
create green space and make things niceand beautiful, but we got to put
some common sense into some of thestuff and say, Okay, if you've
got power lines directly above this tree, probably not a good place for a

(04:31):
tree. Anyways. I think thoseare some of the factors that played into
it, But no way did Iexpect this kind of damage that we ended
up with. Anyways, if youneed help with some of the questions on
damage or just our routine calls,by all means seven three two one two

(04:55):
five eight seven four. Let's seehere, John, This is Jim.
How can I help you? Yeah, thanks for taking my call, and
I'm here in Kingwood and i'd justlike to know obviously we've got trees down
everywhere and kind of to do ityourself with the roofs, So if you
could just talk about that for aminute, if just a corner of your
roof is taken off. I mean, how much of that could you do

(05:18):
yourself instead of because the way inKingwood, I mean it could be a
month or two are longer. Andare you Tom Tod you just get it
shingled or did when you say thecorner, did part of the roof come
off? Not really off like thetrees like it hit the roof and they

(05:38):
kind of didn't go through all theshingles or whatever you want to call them,
and there's just but the wood andthe frame at the bottoms all knocked
out. Gotcha. You know alot of it's going to depend on how
comfortable you are with doing that kindof work. I will tell you.
I've got a friend who went upon his roof to just put tarps,

(06:01):
fell off the roof and has beenin the hospital since. You know.
He broke a couple of ribs, two vertebrae, his scalp was peeled off,
and lacerations in his legs things likethat. I mean, he is
severely injured from going up on theroof. So you got to be careful

(06:25):
when you're doing repairs on the roof, and if you're not used to doing
that type of construction, I don'trecommend you do it. What will typically
be happening is people will come outand do the tarps for a temporary patch
until they can get out to doa more permanent repair. And even the

(06:46):
roofing contractors they have crews who aredoing nothing but that in order to be
ready or to help you to securethe property. And then as things progress,
they can get out and put ona regular roof. So are you

(07:06):
comfortable going up there yourself and doingthe work. Yeah, that's a great
answer, and I appreciate you,you know, taking the time to explain
all that. This would be juston the ladder going up into the roof.
I would not be on the roof. Yeah, if you're not going
to walk around on the roof likeespecially a second flour or anything like that,
those days are gone. Yeah, but no, this would be on

(07:28):
the ladder just underneath the awning partof the roof from the brick. From
the brick was knocked out and there'ssaid, you know, eighteen inches,
like you know, eighteen inches isjust it was all knocked out and just
about you're talking about the sopha boardsunderneath there the overhang. Yes, okay,

(07:49):
Yeah, very much. You cando that yourself. You gotta be
still careful on the on the ladders. Hospitals love ladders because that's their number
one source of business. But youknow, as long as you're careful.
Soffit boards come typically and precut sizes. There A lot of them are pretty
standards. So you can just gointo the box stores even or McCoy's or

(08:15):
you know, any of the lumberyards, get your softit boards and put
it back up. What you'll findis under the saffat material, there's going
to be already two bys that comeacross that you can nail directly to.
If those were hit as well anddamaged, you already can see what's there,
and it's pretty easy to nail stuffback together to and nail more boards

(08:39):
up there if you need it tohave something to nail to. So it
really shouldn't be that big a deal. If the shingles themselves were damaged.
Like I say, you can doit yourself if you want, or just
have tarps put on. If youget tarps put on, I always kind
of chuckle when I drive through townand I see a tarp in the middle
of a roof. A tarp willdo you no good unless you run it

(09:01):
all the way over the peak overthe top. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah, I'm coming. Yeah,I'm unfamiliar with that part of it.
So okay, well something real andkind of work at it. And
so what's kind of going everywhere? Is it? Is it safe to kind
of you know some of the theframe part is it's kind of going everywhere,

(09:26):
you know what I'm saying. Sure, And I just like take a
handsall and cut that off and makeit flat so I can add the board.
You know, I'm not looking atit, so I can't tell you
what you can cut and not cut. Yeah, okay, well I appreciate
it, you bet, you takecare, Thank you you. Now I

(09:48):
will tell everybody this same thing though, when you start looking at trying to
cut stuff, you got to belooking at Okay, what's holding everything above
that up? If you cut everythingloose, is it going to drop down?
And a lot of people get injuredwhen they start cutting stuff loose.
You know, when that bridge collapsed, that was a big thing. It

(10:11):
was taken so long as they hadto look and see what can we cut
out, what can't we cut outbefore we blow the rest of it to
let it drop off, and you'regonna you gotta do the same thing on
your roof because everything is shifted. Before all the rafters were coming down,
sitting on the outside wall, everythingwas good. Now that it's damaged exactly

(10:33):
what's the structural component that's holding everythingtogether, And you're gonna have to be
careful what you take out. Iwould recommend if you are going to start
taking sections out, take one rafterout at a time, replace it so
that you still have stuff there tohold everything together. So I guess that
would be my two cents on that, got a question. Seven one three

(10:54):
two one two five eight seven four. That's seven one three two one two
five eight seven four. And again, look, if you're needing somebody to

down to Leak City, Hello JD. Hey Jim, how you doing that?
Man? I did call you lastweek about a chimney cat fleek,
and I've had somebody come out andbasically they ripped me off. You recommended
I called Guardian Roofing. I didcall them. The technician came out,
he was on time, he's courteous. He said, yep, they've used

(15:28):
the wrong type of sealing. Sohe cleaned it and resealed it, and
man, that did it. Kudosto you for recommending Guardian, and kudos
to Guardian for doing a polite, pleasant, good job for me. I
really really appreciate that, and thankyou so much. You got to take
care of Guardian roof Systems, theofficial roofing company of Texas Home Improvement.

(15:48):

contract actors at thhipro dot com.Don't mess with Jim Dutton's hair or there
will be hell to pay here.He is on Texas Home Improvement. There

(16:17):
just isn't that much hair to messwith, so it really isn't a big
problem. Got a question seven onethree two one two five eight seven four
that's seven one three two, one, two, five, eight seven four,
Bob and Spring, How can Ihelp you today? No, I
do, And I just want tomake a comment about the our r grid,

(16:41):
about what the grid. You commentedon that a while ago. Yeah,
Uh, just share with you theTexas Tribune, uh, female newsletter
that comes out, uh talking aboutour grid, and it's kind of pointing
in the whole affair going on.And they had the Center Point asked for

(17:03):
a grant from the federal government fromObama's now Obama Biden's kitty of money as
trillions of dollars that he passed therefor improving the country part of it.
There was millions of dollars set asideto improve the power grid. Two years
ago, Centerpoint applied for a verylarge bookale, million dollar, billion dollar

(17:29):
type of the grant to improve thepower grid, and the Biden administration turned
it down, didn't give them themoney. So there's been an attempt to
do that. Also, the governorhas a commission in place to evaluate how
to redo the power grid after thefreeze. Yeah, still a couple of

(17:51):
years ago. That's still in place, and they're considering having nuclear power plants
and it's considering having distributed nuclear powerplants where much like the power grid today
and has always been since it wascreated, going across country, every three

(18:15):
to five hundred miles, there's aa station that increases the boldage because that
over the last thirty five hundred milesthey've lost a lot of power in the
line line loss through the distance andthe lanes, and so every three five
hundred miles all over the United States, there's a station that jacks up the
power again so they can send itanother three to five hundred miles, and

(18:40):
so that's a distributed process sort of. But the new thing that's out there
now is in any nuclear power plantsand having a distributed network of local power
work grids as opposed to state wider, nationwide only power grid where solar,

(19:02):
wind, nuclear, uh and regularpower plants will all be powering a small
area and so they would be independentof each other but cross connected, Rebecca.
But the ideas are they're kind ofthinking of moving to distributed because they

(19:23):
built all the windows. If youhave the west side of Dallas heading for
New Mexico to get out there. But the things you're talking about is is
more of the generation side and what'skilling US right now is actually the grid
itself. The lines that distribute thepower, uh when right distributed right.

(19:48):
But but the ideas and the futurepotentially is to make it all the power
come together locally, take care ofa small area, wind, solar,
you know, nuclear power plants, and then they will be sighted all over
the United States. They won't betrying to ship power thousands of miles across
country on those power lines because notonly are they one, they were built

(20:14):
in the nineteen sixties and they're reallyquite adequated, and the cables are very
old and not as effective as theyused to be. But they're also if
you go on the internet, doyou look for who's attacking the power grid?
The FBI investigates attacks on those towers. Well two and fifty three hundred

(20:37):
attacks a year on the towers allover the country. People are trying to
destroy the stupid things. The secessionistsor the anarchists to the northwest had vowed
to bring down the grid by destroyingpowers a couple of years towers a couple
of years ago. The whole grididea is Achilles heel of the United States

(21:02):
our system, because yeah, there'stens of thousands of these towers all over
the United States right now. Inmy opinion, though once once we came
off the high lines, you knowwhere we got all these wooden poles running
down along roads and all this kindof stuff. One of the things that

(21:22):
would help tremendously would have been ifwe buried the lines instead of having everything
overhead. And I know it createsa whole new set of issues, but
you don't have everything going down everytime you have a little storm come in.
And that's that's what we're dealing withnow. Is it just can't handle
it. Yeah, And with that, I hate to do it to you,

(21:45):
Bob, I gotta let you go. We're up against the break for
news, traffic, and weather hereon seven forty khr h. We'll be
back with more Texas Home improvements sevenone three, two one two five eight
seven four. Let's talk about concordwindow film. You know, one of
the things that could have helped alot of people when the power was out

(22:06):
would have been having concord window filmon their windows because it blocks a lot
of the heat build up that weget coming in through our windows. It
blocks up to ninety nine percent ofthe UV rays which produces the heat inside
because it heats up the floors andfurniture and different things like that, and

(22:26):
it can reduce the glare. Itcan also give you privacy by keeping neighbors
from being able to look because ConcordWindow Film has window film that goes from
you know, just a dark, dark film that you can't see through,
to one that's so light you can'teven tell it's there. Look, if
you're wanting some window film to helpwith your energy bills, to give you

(22:47):
the privacy you're looking for, youneed to take a look at Concord Window
Film at eight eight eight two zerosix one four one three. That's eight
eight eight two zero six one fourone three A daughter five. Tell you
before you your I'll come back yousee. Welcome back to Texas Home Improvement

(23:27):
seven one three two one two fiveeight seven four. Let's head out to
Katie and Joe. Welcome to sevenforty k t r H. How can
I help you? Yes, Ijust had a question about my AC drain
that goes to the plumbing. Itseems like it's getting clod quite quite often

(23:51):
now, and when I had someonecome out and do it check up,
they kind of told me Dave theywould like to blow it out, but
since it's hard pipe, they saidthey would install some type of sleeve.
I guess they would cut the pipeand put this flexible sleeve on there where

(24:11):
they could access it by removing thesleeve. Are you familiar with what he's
talking about? Not exactly sure whathe's talking about. It is common that
there is an access riser that comesoff of the drain pipe, and yes,

(24:33):
you can. Then they have basicallya gun that they can put on
there that uses a CO two cartridge. Pull the trigger and it blasts out
the air. And it also thengives you a spot where you can periodically
dump something in there to keep themolds and funguses and all that stuff from
growing again. Right, I guesswhere he was talking about putting the sleeve

(24:56):
was see trains into the bathroom Zincwhich is close by walk underneast where it
goes into the the pipe and it'slocated right there by the p trap of
of one one of my local sposetand and that's where he said they they

(25:18):
normally would, you know, cutthe pipe and put that sleeve on where
where it's removable, and then theywould kind of include a dourney from there,
like compressed there or I guess whateverthey're going to use. So he's
he's looking at blowing it backwards then, right right, Yeah, Truthfully,

(25:38):
I'm not familiar with doing it thatway. Everything I've always seen and done
has been blow it forward. Okay, blow it from from where that pipe,
from the top of the bleach andstuff. But it helps a little
bit lately, but but I knowthis is still dripping. So yeah,

(26:00):
kind of one because he said anyplumber would would know what I'm talking about,
but I haven't really found one thatthat kind of knows. Yeah,
and I have both a plumbing andan HVAC company, and I'm not sure
what he's talking about. So whatwould you recommend? Just you mentioned the

(26:23):
gun that they would just shoot,Yeah, that's typically all they do is
they blow it out with CO twoand then flush the line out, and
periodically you have to put bleach init or another chemical for the molds and
stuff to keep them from growing back. The problem most people run into is

(26:45):
it just doesn't get done often enoughto keep it from coming back. Oh.
You just at this time of year, we're running typically fifteen gallons a
day through that pipe. Sure.So. Uh. You know, I
have started seeing advertising for a newproduct that automatically injects something into the pipe,

(27:12):
uh, in order to keep itclean and so you don't have to
go up in the attic any longerto you know, shoot it with a
bleach or anything like that. Ihave not looked at the product yet,
have not seen how it works.I I just saw some advertising on it.
Uh. It is something that Low'sand Home Depot both are carrying.

(27:36):
And when I get some time,I've I figured on looking into it.
Okay, do you do you knowthe name of it? I do not.
Oh, okay, okay, I'llI might just check with them or
or maybe put a little bit morebleached specific clears up, yeah before calling
back out or whatever. Okay,do all right, thank you, you

(28:00):
take care too, buddy. Andagain our number seven one three two one
two five eight seven four. We'regoing to head down to Alvin and Norah.
How can I help you today?Yes, we've been running a little
generator fifty five hundred blots puts inback and forth between an air conditioning unit,

(28:22):
refrigerators and the well. And justwant to know the proper procedure we're
getting close to getting our our electricityturned back on. And we had some
friends who said that they're capacitors andtheir air conditioners blue and they's like dirty
electricity. So what is the propersafest procedure for getting off the little generator

(28:45):
and back on the electricity. Pullthe plug on everything that you have plugged
into the walls right now. Uhyou know, TVs, the refrigerators,
anything that you're have plugged into thewall, even though you're not because anything
you got plugged in the generator rightnow is already unplugged from the wall.

(29:06):
But unplug everything else on your HVACsystem, shut the breakers off, h
so that after the power comes up, let it be up for a little
bit before you turn the breakers backon and start plugging everything back into the
walls. Okay, so physically unpluggingeverything as well as have all the breakers

(29:29):
off. Yep, Okay, thankyou very much, appreciate it. And
then like I said, before youplug everything back in on your outlets,
you can go ahead and start turningthe breakers on on the HVAC system,
have it shut off, let theace, let the power run for a
little bit to make sure you've gotgood power staying clean, staying up.

(29:52):
Then you can go ahead and turnthe breakers back on for the HVAC system.
Okay, great, And if youwould mention about whole house generators,
I think we're done with this littlegenerator. Okay, what would you like
to know? I just heard abouthouse burning and friends with and I thought

(30:15):
that they were, like, youknow, super marvelous and looking into getting
them. But it's like, whywould it cause a house fire? Whole
house generator? It should not have, okay, any more than any more
than having just regular electricity running tothe house. Okay, all right,
so they are basically safe if putin correctly, then yes, ma'am.

(30:38):
Yeah, thank you too much toput them in correctly. The way they
should go is there there is aswitch that goes in that their power will
switch from the landline to the generatorpower and then it just ties straight into
the breaker panel and powers a housejust like it would if it was on
the regular landline. When the powercomes back on, that switch will flip

(31:03):
it back over to the landline andthen shut the generator down. Okay,
well, sounds like magic, andI want to get something. Thank you
so much. You're welcome. Takecare thank you, bye bye again.

(31:26):
Seven one three two one two fiveeight seven four. That's seven one three
two one two five eight seven four. Yeah. The key thing and a
lot of people are learning this isunplug and shut everything off. Now,
you obviously you've got to have somethingon to know when the power comes back
on, So leave a light onthat's in an obvious spot that when the

(31:48):
power grid comes back up, yousee it. But then you can start
turning breakers back on the HVAC one. You know't let let everything get going
good before you throw that switch.I know, the first thing we want
to do is get that air conditionerrunning. But if you want to maintain
it right, give it just alittle time. And I'm not talking hours,

(32:12):
I'm just saying, you know, give it probably fifteen twenty minutes.
Make sure the power is going tostay up and that it's running like it
should before you start throwing that breaker. Now, if you're needing an air
conditioning system, take a look atAmerican Standard air now. They are nationally

(36:27):
Home Improvement. How can I helpyou? Well? Actually, before the
hurricane, I had a very smallleak two story health in a down over
a downstairs picture window, and Iwent up in the attic and right above
this and the second story attic hada place where two valleys meet towards the

(36:53):
towards the gutter. I noticed whatlooks like rotten wood right at the edge.
Yeah, I mean it's it's it'swhat the roof sits on, right,
it's that that board. And uhso I got a guy out who's

(37:16):
done some work for me in thepast. He's a remodeler and does a
good job. But I got itthere, and this house has a concrete
tile roof system, and uh youknow, he said he could do it,
but I just got a little nervousthinking that he could get up there

(37:37):
on a second floor roof and dealwith these concrete tiles, which I don't
think are very common. I didn'tbuild a house, right, And is
there you know you mentioned that Guardianplace and something else is there? Would
you recommend somebody a little more professionalto work on a concrete tile roof?

(37:58):
Yes, I would you need aregular roofer who has done that, and
I know Guardian Roof Systems has,so you definitely I would recommend calling them
on something like that because the waythose are put on. You know,
there's there's gonna be a furrying stripup there. It'll have a little hook.
It'll hang over that furrying strip, and then there's a nail in the

(38:22):
top to hold it in place. And if you start prying on them too
much, they just crack and break, especially if they've been up there any
amount of time. Yeah, twentyyears. So yeah, that's what I'm
nervous about. So give and youcan give them a call at to eight

(39:14):
Hey, Jim, you were justtalking about pouring chlorox down the drain for
the air conditioners, and he hadsaid that sometimes we needed to do it
more often, but you didn't sayhow more often to do it? I
do. I do that in myattic about once a month. Once a

(39:34):
month is the heavy side, andyou should it should stay working well if
you're doing it once a month.Okay, cool, all right, that's
all I add. That's all Iasked. You know, a lot of
people try to do it just liketwice a year when the ac tech comes
out, and sometimes it needs itmore often than that, like quarterly or
monthly. Okay, well I haveit. I give my dog, you

(40:01):
know, flea medicine on the firstof the month, and I put clorox
down the I actually put a puta little yeah when I did, cut
my pipe up there and and puta little a tea joint in there so
I could, you know, andwith a little cap on it, so

(40:22):
I can take that cap off andpour it down right there and works great.
So dogs just don't just don't mixup the dog's medicine with the with
the floor ox now, but bothget down on the first of the month.
There you go, there you go, all right, thank you sir.

Jim. How can I help youtoday? Hi Jim, thanks for taking
my call, my pleasure. SoI had a hole put in my roof
during the hurricane. But this reallyisn't a roofing question. Okay. Because

(49:49):
of that, I had water comeinto my house and do damage to an
old fashioned hardwood floor. And byold fashioned, I mean the planks are
about two inches wide in the rateof pecon. Is there any like time
replacement for a floor like that that'sstill available? Well, when you say

(50:10):
it damaged it, what did itdo to it? So at the scenes
between the planks, they're lifted upand separated a bit where the water was.
Okay, I want you to callWoodland's water restoration. Okay at two
eight one, five, seven, six, eight, four five nine.

(50:37):
And you know, I don't knowhow long they can sit like that before
it becomes too big an issue forit to be corrected. But we're still
only days in and a lot oftimes when wood floors get water on them,
they can be saved if it's addressedquick enough with proper drying techniques and

(50:58):
Woodland's water restoration that's something they specializein doing. Well. If they need
power, I don't have that yet, generators will help, and you know'
let them look at it, becauseyou know, the first thing I'm going
to be able to tell you iscan it be saved? And then if
it can't be saved, they'll they'llbe able to refer you to people because

(51:21):
they go through and restore places likethis, and so they'll be able to
line you out with somebody who canrestore it as well. So if it
does need to be replaced, isthere anybody who's still doing that kind of
work? Oh yes, ma'am.You can even still go into floor in
the core and buy oak floors thatare unfinished and put them in like that.

(51:43):
So yeah, that stuff is stillavailable, okay, because you know,
most of what I've seen in storesis just the you know, laminate
flooring and the peril. Do youknow why that is? Why is that
we're all too darn cheap to buythe good floors like you got. All

(52:04):
Right, thank you very much,You're welcome. You take care alrighty bye
bye again our number seven one threetwo one two five eight seven four head
up to a Taska Ceda, Sandy. What can I do for hi?
There? Thanks for taking my call? I hear, y'all Advertising Guardian Roofing

(52:30):
Systems. I called there and Ihave a different number, and I wasn't
too sure if two companies could havethe same name, or can I have
the phone number that you suggesting youcan two eight one four zero seven seven

(52:54):
two eight zero seven No seven toeight zero eight zero Okay, Okay,
Now my issue was and probably stillis when it rains, and of course
I didn't hear it during the hurricanebecause all the wind blowing. But I

(53:17):
hear a drip in the chimney, okay, and there's no water coming in,
but it's it's kind of annoying,and I wanted to make sure nothing's
going on there if I need whatdo they call it the flashing redone rather,
yeah, some flashing, or itmay need on the top. If
it's a brick chimney, it mayhave mortar up there that needs to be

(53:40):
redone, or a chimney cap.Okay. Now, this company that I
called, uh, it was GuardianRoofing, and he went ahead and told
me that he could check out myroof within an hour. I don't know
if they have a drone or what, but he's He called me back in

(54:01):
an hour and said my rooftiles lookedgood. And uh, it's normal to
hear that. Is that not right? I would get somebody to look at
it, Okay. So, likeI said, I thought I was calling
the company that y'all recommended, butwell, you know, and it bring

(54:24):
this is an opportunitytunity for me tobring this up. You don't hear me
a lot of times put out companies'web addresses, because when we Google and
we look up companies online, allthese darn fly by nights try to copy
names. Okay, and that's thereadon. Now we's referring by go to

(54:45):
my website thhipro dot com. Allthese guys you hear me doing spots for
are there and you'll get the rightnumbers that way. Okay. So I
got the number two eight one, four zero seven seven eight Z. Yes,
ma'am, and I thank you somuch. You're welcome. You take

(55:05):
care you do. Bye, Yeah, I will tell you. Even up
in the Dallas market there's one company'swho's gets you enough, who's out using
the name Texas Home Improvement. We'vehad to put some season assists notices out
and stuff like that. So uh, it just drives me nuts on the

(55:27):
search engine stuff. All right,Charlie in friends would welcome to seven forty
KGRH. How can I help you? Well, first, thank you for
your program and we get your newsletterevery week and appreciate all that, and
glad you're there. I have actuallytwo things to question you about or talk
to you about. Okay. Thefirst the first ord is I have been

(55:52):
thinking about as a result of somethingthat happened, order a whole house surge
protector any thought on that, andwe have we have three aces y'all take
care of all our air pnditioning inthe house, leveling and stuff, and
three a cs and a lot ofother appliances around the whole house. Surge

(56:16):
protectors are becoming more and more popularas our power grid becomes a bigger and
bigger problem because we do get surgeson the grid that tear up refrigerators and
you know, different motors like thatand are not that expensive. I don't
know if you've looked into them yet, but uh, if you'll call right

(56:37):
Touch Electrical, they can hook youup with one. They're not, like
I said, they're not that ungodlyexpensive, but boy, it's it's sure
a lot cheaper than insurance, deductiblesand stuff, okay, And they can
just cook it into your whole system, get off your house, all your
appliances, and never say yep okay. And my third thing also is kind

(57:01):
of tied in with that. Abouta month ago, we had a five
hour power outage during the middle ofthe day and then when the power came
back home, we thought all wasfine. The next day our refrigerator was
freezing up everything on both sides. We called Choice Home warranty that we have.

(57:22):
They sent a young man out.He spent about five for ten minutes
and then called the company and theyimmediately came back and said it was caused
by a surge not covered there.Next day or two we called the manufacturer
of the refrigerator and said we likea closer check. So none of our

(57:45):
other We had two other refrigerators anda freezer, and none of them seemed
to have a problem. Right,So the gentleman, the manufacturer's rep,
came out, spent about thirty minutesand said, no, no evidence of
all of the service problem, justmisdiagnosed. So they I'm sure so they

(58:08):
could get a deny it. Well, we sent a copy of all his
all his information and everything to him. They well, and it said sent
twice. We tried. They didn'trespond or didn't say they didn't get it,

(58:28):
and our calls were basically unanswered andwe would send a matter alder to
their headquarters. Anyway, what recoursedo you think I might have or that
that Choice hole we think is justtaking advantage of us. Sure, and
did all this happen this week?Or was this we've been fighting We've been

(58:52):
thinking about this for about a month, okay, and found out you know
they are they are in New Yorkheadquarters. So it's not a uh but
you know, like you do itlocally, sure somebody, Oh, but
it is because they're doing business inTexas. They got to they got to

(59:13):
take care of business in Texas. So now I'm not an attorney, but
the course of actions you have obviouslyyou can have an attorney send a notice
on this, or you can filein small claims. And the deal with
small claims is as a corporation, you have to show up with an attorney.

(59:37):
You can't just go in there anddo it yourself. And it will
be cheaper for them to take careof your problem than to send an attorney.
Oh okay, because it was abouta two thousand dollars for free,
you're ready. We were to replaceit, but it was a little more
expensive. And honestly, I'm giveyou the With do West air Conditioning,

(01:00:02):
we do some work for uh,some of the home warranty companies, and
I will tell you the way theyoperate is if you they have a threshold.
This this is the number. Theywant every call to be within X
dollars, and if you have toomany calls that run over it, then

(01:00:27):
they'll drop you from being going outon calls. So they're trying to drive
the companies who are going out thereto deny claims. So I don't know
how long we're going to make itwith them, but we're there right now.
But I'm not with choice. OkI want to had one call a
year or two ago and that waslined. We did not we did not

(01:00:51):
try to fight that at all.So that's that's the only thing. Yeah.
One other things, there is ain Texas you can write a letter
of com point to the governing bodythat governs. They do have to be
Do you know anything about that?I don't know if they're right. Are
they running through the for insurance theboard for insurance? If I think it's

(01:01:15):
under the homeowners or board or something? Okay, if that's the case,
Yeah, if if you'll contact thestate has basically a licensing bureau that handles
all the different licensings in the inTexas. They will connect you and take
the the complaint. Okay, yeah, because they just stowed along in this

(01:01:40):
and now UH don't know here, you know, more mass or anything and
calling back when somebody else claims specialistand we never get to call back.
Yep, Texas Board of Licensing, that's that. That's who. That's who
you need to contact. Okay, thank you so much for all your good

(01:02:02):
information. We'll look into that furgeprotection even though that was about the case
according to the sure okay, okay, Well, and like I said,
you can call the right Touch Electricalon that and then their number is two
eight one six four five five fivetwo six okay, one of the just

(01:02:24):
class. I think to you,it's the folks are so well, tell
aby it wusham. Well, youknow your father and I have worked together
for years and anyway, I surehope they're well. I have not talked
to him anytime recently. Charlie, you used to the survey in we went

(01:02:45):
off shore. Yeah, I knowwho you are. Then, okay,
we did directional work offshore yep.Yeah, yeah, the directional surveying off
shore there and you probably just saidhi to him yourself because he listens like
clockwork. Uh. Well, Idon't have his phone number. I'm gonna

(01:03:05):
have to try to find that again. I've lost track of that. But
anyway, I'll tell you what,Charlie. I'm gonna put you on hold,
and I'm getting ready to take abreak, and I will have David,
my producer here, give you hisphone number. I'll give it to
David in just a second while I'mon break. Okay, can he text

(01:03:27):
him to me? Perhaps? Iprobably, so that you know what,
I've got your phone number, Iwill have Dad call you. Great.
Okay, well, either the littlemessage of this or a forty three year
old home hardline phone and every okay, so what work. I will thank

(01:03:49):
you so much about talking about don'tturn all your all your everything all at

Home Improvement with Jim Dutton. Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvement.

(01:07:08):
We're gonna head straight to Kingwood.Tom. This is Jim. How can
I help you? Hey, Jim, Yeah, thanks for taking my call.
I got a question about the issuein my attic. I had it
sprayed with that cellulight spray that theyshoot in there, and they didn't do
over the garage. They say youdon't have to do that because it's not

(01:07:30):
part of the heated and cool house. Correct. I pulled my hot cars
in there and that it's all opento the rest of the house. So
I was thinking of putting some kindof a partition or something there just and
maybe have it so it can breathea little bit, but not wide open.
What do you think about that?Throw a radiant barrier up there if

(01:07:53):
you're concerned with it. But theproblem with putting insulation in an unheated and
uncooled area is the insulation will holdthe temperature, it doesn't release it.
You know that the the insulation isreally a buffer zone between the hot and
cold areas, and if your airconditioner is going, the insulation will tend

(01:08:17):
to keep the heat from coming intothe living space. If it's thick enough.
When there's no air conditioning going, the whole insulation will heat up.
So now when the sun goes downand everything else is cooling off, that
insulation is still releasing the heat andkeeping that garage hotter longer. But if

(01:08:38):
you'll just do you think that airin that attic is going that hot air
from that garage is sliding over intothe rest of the house. It does,
but it's not hurting anything because that'swhat the insulation is there for,
and the attic has ventilation to letthe hot air out, So it's really
not going to make a difference inthe temperature in the attic. It wouldn't

(01:09:00):
make it there. Okay, ohthat was my question. We're a wife
and I we talk about it,and it's called chymp. See what he
so you answer my question? Okay, who won? You were the wife?
I think, uh, well,we were both undecided on that one.

Here's Jim Dutton on Texas Home Improvement. Hey, welcome back to Texas Home

(01:10:31):
Improvements, your total home improvement source. When we left, I was talking
with Tom in Kingwood and Tom,sorry about that, Oh, no problem,
uh. I just had a quickquestion about the Sarge protector. You
mentioned a couple of calls previous tomine. Yeah, and I do have
one of those I had a newpower panel on that circu brighter panel put

(01:10:53):
on a few years back, andthey didn't stall that. Do you think
it's you feel it's necessary to stillgo ahead and pull the circle breakers on
my AC unit because of the surgewith the power coming back on in Kingwood.
I would. And it's not asmuch just a surge as it can
be. Not enough power that itstarts me, you know, burning stuff

(01:11:18):
up? Yeah, too low avolts. Okay, sounds good. I
appreciate it. Enjoy your show, you bet, take care, Thank you,
thank you, bye bye, andlet's see here, Warren. Welcome
to Texas Home Improvement. How canI help you? Oh, I'm just

(01:11:41):
fine. I just have a questionbecause I had talked to you. I
had some landing blanket at one timeand somebody offered me way too much for
me to keep it, so Isold it. But I'm now here in
Gonzales County, and what I've done, I've run about eight hundred foot of

(01:12:01):
PBC Entrant quarreline to where my houseis. But I have a problem,
and you have a plumbing company. My issue is is that all of the
fittings are failing. Yeah, Idon't care they came from China or made
in America or where. But they'reconstantly failing it. It's teas, it's

(01:12:27):
it's nineties, it's forty fives,it's male female, you know, couplings
and all that, and they're failing. And the worst part about it is
I've buried it down two feet inblack lamp, black dumboat. Okay,
I'm just wondering there was there somethingwrong in two thousand or twenty twenty one

(01:12:50):
or twenty twenty two when I putit in with the manufacturing those those products,
not that I've ever heard of.But when you say they're failing,
is it the joint itself is breaking? Or are the pipes coming apart from
the joints they're breaking at the pointsor or or they're you know, they're

(01:13:15):
just cracking inside and then leaking.Because I had a ninety leak that I
didn't find for I guess a longtime because it's down two feet in that
gumbo, and you know, itdidn't show up on top until all of
a sudden we had a you know, a water spout now the ground and

(01:13:38):
apparently it was about seven hundred dollarsworth of water that went through that mm
and uh, you know, I'mjust curious as if there were some issues,
you know, because when I builtmy first house, there were a
lot of problems with galvanized right,so, but no, I had not
heard of any issues with the withthe the manufacturing of PVC parts. Yeah.

(01:14:06):
And I you know, the thepipe itself, because I laid the
bell pipe you know, inch ofwater going in my house. Yeah,
that hadn't given a problem. Butwherever I had to put a t or
you know, for a false atyou know, every couple hundred feet it,

(01:14:27):
I mean, everything that's been beenthere is is has failed at one
at one point or another. Yeah, And I can't him. I am
just blue in the face and tiredof digging stuff back up that I put
in that I thought I put itin, right. You know. The
only thing I can think of isthat the solvents that we use put it

(01:14:54):
together or the actual product. Wellyeah, and the solving is why I
was asking, you know, isit the joints blowing apart or if it's
the fitting itself cracking, Because ifyou're telling me that it's the joints blowing
apart, then I would be questioning, Uh, primer and glue. But

(01:15:15):
if if it's the fitting itself cracking, that's going to be something else.
Something either we got too bullish withit, putting them in or something along
that line. But I have notheard of anybody having these kind of issues.
Well, I'm on what they whatthey call Fayette County Water Systems.

(01:15:38):
Okay, there pressure at at youknow, my my meter out there is
eighty four bs. I okay, and you know I know that. You
know, you look on the pipeand it says it's good for you know,
one hundred three or whatever, right, hundred and eighty pounds is too

(01:16:00):
much? Should not be? Ididn't think so. Uh, but you
know, just just an issue likethat. Yeah, and that's been me
nuts because you know, I haveto constantly run around and not only that,
brass faucets are failing. I meanthey'll just out of nowhere start leaking

(01:16:26):
and you can't shut them. Yeah, you know, I'm just I'm at
withs D because I've I have flummy last three houses and I've never had
this issue. Yeah. Like Isaid, I've never heard of it.
So if you can, if youfind out what's causing it, let me
know. Yeah, I will, because if I can figure it out,

(01:16:48):
then I'll be I'll need to geta show or something. But okay,
Warren, you take care all right, Thank you boy. And let's see
here. Is it Parisia in MissouriCity? Yes, hygiene, this is

(01:17:15):
Parisia. How can I help you? Uh? I got a problem in
my refrigerator. Uh huh uh thatit was working fine, but after Hurricane
Beryl we had a power gone, and then after the power came back the
day before yesterday, the freeze stoppedworking. The lights are on, the

(01:17:35):
A founds are on, but thereis no cooling in the refrigerator. Yeah,
you're gonna end up calling a repairperson because more than likely there was
a surge. That's reading. Everythingneeds to be unplugged for when the power
comes back on then we can startplugging stuff back in. Oh, it

(01:17:58):
might have burned something up in thein the compressor. Oh okay, So
give a give a repair man acall and let them come out and take
a look at it. First.Do you know anyone who is good,
good, good in that one inMissouri City? No, like me are

(01:18:20):
in boundary of Mazolo City and SugarLane. So if somebody is in sugar
Lane. It's fine too. Yeah, yeah, I don't get into appliance
repair much, nor would appliance probablycould help you with it, though.
Okay, okay, okay, thankyou, thank you so much much.

like here's Jim Dotting on Texas HomeImprovement. Hey, welcome back to Texas

(01:22:08):
Home Improvement, your total home improvementsource. Let's jump straight back into our
calls. We'men I head to NorthwestHouston, Richard, This is Jim.
How can I help you? Hello, Jim, thank you for the picking
my call. I have a problemwith my washer. It's located in my

(01:22:30):
garage, my Washington dryer, andwhen it goes through the spin cycle,
it dispersed the water into the littlehole in the back by the wall,
and for some reason it comes backout and putting water all over my floor
in there, and I've been tryingto think of what I could do to

(01:22:50):
resolve that problem. Can you help? Okay, So you're talking about the
the discharge line on the washing machinegoes into the box in the wall that
feeds in and it's backing up upthrough that pipe. Correct, yes,
sir, Okay, you got asewer line plug. You're gonna need to

(01:23:15):
run a snake through the line,Okay. I had someone come before they
end up underneath might sink in thekitchen, as with some kind of snake
thing. I didn't realize that theywere connected. So would that need to
happen again? Probably so, becausewhat might have happened is that they got

(01:23:43):
stuff to move, but it mighthave blocked the tea that brings in from
the washing machine into the line. That goes out from the kitchen into the
main trunk lines and stuff. Okay, so it sounds like something. Definitely,
I can't do. My tell,if you had a snake, you

(01:24:05):
probably could, but in most casesyou're better off to let somebody come out,
especially how old the house is thisWell, I've been in it like
fifteen years, so I'm not sure. Okay, so it's not like a

(01:24:25):
fifty or sixty year old house, then no, okay, yeah, I
would. I would just get aplumber back out there, then let them
run the snake through that line, because you know, if it was grease
or something like that that blocked upthe line to begin with. When they
ran the snake through the first time, it can move it and push it

(01:24:48):
up into the washing machine line. And now it's blocking that one. Yeah,
because it seemed like it was workingat first, yep. But I
was really got confused when they wentunderneath the sink to let us snake.

(01:25:10):
So I was like, well,if it was a line from the sink
that was originally given a problem, that that wouldn't surprise me. And there's
typically if that's an outside wall, there's usually an access for uh getting into
run snakes through there because you don'tyou don't have access to run snakes from

(01:25:31):
everywhere. Okay, well I thinkthey were asking me about that. I
didn't know. Yeah, okay, okay, well, thank you sir.
Good luck with that, and we'regoing to go to my hometown Pasadena.

(01:25:57):
Greg. This is Jim. Howcan I help you? Hey, Jim,
thanks for taking my car. Iappreciate it. I love your show.
Thank you. I had a homebuilt in nineteen ninety eight, still
living in it had the original insulationblown in and it was never blown in
to spec. So I'm looking tokind of upgrade that, you know,

(01:26:23):
and get the right amount of insulationin there. But somebody told me that,
you know, no big deals anddoesn't really matter. You vacuum out
the old insulation. It's been inthere twenty four years. It was never
blown in up to spec. Ican even see the beams up there in
the roof, you know, ceiling. So I'm just wondering what are your

(01:26:46):
thoughts on that, Jim. Well, because if there's a reason to take
the old out, you can inthe attic, you know, like if
you got cellulose insulation, as itstarts aging, it'll start turning to dust.
But if you got say, fiberglassup there that was blown in,
it's gonna settle over time, andyou add more insulation over the top of

(01:27:09):
it. Uh, there's not areason to remove it unless rodentscott in it
and stuff like that. So unlessthere's a reason to remove it, just
go over it. Oh okay, okay, yeah, no, it is
the fiberglass blown in insulation. Andyou know, never had any issues with
molding or any kind of leaks inthe roof that you know would have uh

(01:27:31):
water down my insulation in there.Sure, okay, okay, So that's
gonna save me some money then, you know. And that's why you know,
I was calling to get your thoughtson that and uh new insulation over
the top of that, it's gonnawork just as well, then, yes,
sir, Okay, well wonderful. That sounds good. Well then that's
what I'm gonna do. I reallyappreciate it, Jim, Thank you so

(01:27:55):
much, sir. You bet takecare all right, thank you, And
we're gonna take a quick break hereon Texas Home Improvement. When we come
back. We got Rick, I'msorry, We've got Charles and then Rick

wood surface, and a lot ofpeople are going to be getting new fences.

and put some ready Seal on it. It can keep it looking gorgeous for
years. Because you know, allthese fences they turn gray as they age

(01:28:46):
and that's not real attractive. Butif you keep the ready Seal on there,
it'll keep it looking like new andyou don't have to apply it all
the time. I mean, I'vegot fences that I've reapply it every four
or five years to keep it lookinggood. You can as well. You

Home Improvement. Here's Jim Dutton.Hey, welcome back to Texas Home Improvement.
Charleson Dayton. How can I helpyou today? All right, nice
to speak to you. I aquick question. My addic's pretty hot and

(01:31:50):
I got a big covered porch.I was wondering if I put a fan
in it blowing up into the attic, if it helped addict cool off.
I have an no ridge fence, but I do have three electric fans put
that I put in the roof, but I never hooked them up the power.
No hook the fans up instead oftrying to blow air up into the

(01:32:13):
attic. Uh. You you'd neverwant to pressure ize the attic because that
can blow stuff into the house aswell. So you either use passive like
the ridge vents, or if you'regonna use a fan, you gotta be
sucking air out of the attic insteadof blowing air in. Okay, would

(01:32:38):
have instead of blown in then fromthat porch, how about blowing out into
the porch from the from the attic. It's gonna make the city underneath their
miserable. We never use it.Yeah, but no hook hook up the
hook up the attic fans instead. You know, because it's designed where air

(01:33:00):
comes in the bottom through the softedfence and goes out through the top.
You know that that that's the airmovement that you're looking for. Uh,
you know, just because you havethat opening there, I wouldn't be using
any type of fan in that area, all right. Uh. And what
that music means, I'm gonna haveto let you go because we are completely

(01:33:21):
out of time. Thanks for listeningtoday, everybody. I hope everybody went
