that as well, because we takegood care of you here. On Later
with Moe Kelly. Also later,we're going to talk about the Orange County
(01:23):
uber driver who shot a suspect allegedlyassaulting a woman. What the hell is
going on? Uber drivers are carryingand they're shooting people having nothing to do
with their car. We'll talk aboutthat and San Diego Padre has been banned
from baseball for life for betting. And if you haven't been paying attention,
(01:46):
this sports betting issue has permeated allprofessional sports and it's getting more and more
out of hand. We've got thoughtson that. And California teachers are using
AI to get this grade papers. That's just one step away from removing teachers
from the classroom all together, becausewell, if they're grading papers, next,
(02:07):
they'll be teaching classes. And youmight have heard Mark Runner talk about
this during the news break yesterday. We didn't have a chance to get to
it. X formerly known as Twitternow formally has allowed X rated content on
X, which is kind of redundant. But it's almost like, have you
ever been to Okay, sorry Kenna, I'm sorry you're in the studio to
(02:29):
hear this, but have you everbeen to a strip club and you just
want to like, hurry up andget to the good part. I don't
need the strip teas, just goahead and get there. Did you know
when he got on Twitter and ElonMusk had purchased X or Twitter, you
knew it was like, Okay, this is the strip teas we know it's
going to be porn Central at onepoint, just hurry up and get there.
You saw you had the porn botswho are liking all of your tweets
(02:51):
and everything. It's like, justryp and get there. You know you
are priming the pump for more porn. Well, it's officially happened. Porn
is on X. I would say, well, it's always been there legally,
but it's being endorsed by Elon Muskcriming the pump. Oh you caught
that right, nice. I wasn'tgonna get a rim shot. So,
(03:12):
oh well, advertisers this, Well, since you're on the mic, mark
yes, mom. First, Iwould like to say that there will not
be any rain this weekend, butthere's supposed to be a heat wave.
Do you know anything about it?Oh that was refreshing, Thank you for
(03:32):
that. Yeah, it's uh it'sgonna be uh over one hundred in the
I e n av Well, Iwon't be here, thank goodness. Maybe
Twallo will be here. You're neededhere? Where you're going at? Where
do you think you're going? I'mgoing out of town on Friday. I
told you I have a funeral Ihave to go to. So this weekend
I will not be here in thesweltering heat, which means you're not going
(03:54):
to the movie with us Friday, which I've already told you. What else
are you getting out of with thisexcuse? Isn't that enough? It's okay,
you'd make a lows you witness onthe stand? This cross examinations over
the difference between you and me isI am not going to be a witness
on a stand knock on wood foranything or anyone. I have no desire.
(04:15):
It's early. No, no,it isn't. I'm on the other
side of fifty. So we're gettinglater in the game. I don't know
twala Am I going to be awitness on the stand anytime soon? Committed
no crimes? Okay, I'm wantingto speak about right now, all right,
and good evening to little Robin.Robin, you're running the show again
today. How you doing? Areyou doing good? All right? And
(04:38):
there's a rumor out there that youare an uber driver as well. I
am. Okay. So when wecome back on the other side of this
break, we're not going to breakyet. But on the other side,
when we get into that oc uberdriver who shot a suspect allegedly assaulting a
woman, I would love to getyour thoughts on that, So get ready,
I'm going to be coming to youin just a moment. We have
(04:59):
a huge, huge show. We'regiving away tickets, tickets tickets for I
Forgot. We're giving away the ticketstomorrow for Disney's A Little Mermaid, and
another pair of tickets for Super Freak, the Rick James Show. We're giving
away so many tickets. I can'tkeep it straight anymore. It's just so
many, so many. And Tulaknows as we just got another promotion that
(05:21):
we're going to be doing before theend of the month, connected to Lamarado
Theater. Yes, so much goodstuff. It puts a MPM to Shane.
Oh, and there's a little roomwe're going around that Mark Runner's birthday
might be around soon. Oh boy, here we go. Is today your
birthday? Mark? No, itis not. Is it tomorrow? Yes,
(05:43):
it's tomorrow. Mom, Okay,we're all here. Yes, yeah,
it's still not too late for meto get somebody to fill in.
I knows I might need to goon a Spencer Tracy style bender tomorrow.
Starting in the daytime. I willcall all the KFI anchors and say no,
do not let Mark Ronner switch shiftswith you. What's better on a
(06:03):
birthday than a little good old fashionedday drinking? Huh? I mean I
don't know. Yeah, I couldmake a list, but we don't have
enough time. A short list growingup for me? It rhymed with X.
Yeah, that's all you need iton your birthday? Does that really
(06:24):
rhyme? Can you rhyme with aletter? Can you? Yeah? Did
it also rhyme with schminter course?Absolutely? Okay? Thank you always want
clarification. Sminter course is a word. It is today as of right now.
Yeah, of course the FCC itis, or at least one we
(06:47):
don't get fined for. So whenwe come back, let's get into that
Orange County Ubert driver who shot asuspect allegedly assaulting a woman. It seems
that Uber drivers are now carrying Wehave Bernard Gets driving for Uber. If
you don't get that reference, googleit. It might be before your time.
It's Later with mo Kelly. Can'tI am six forty. We are
alive everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. You're listening to Later with Mo Kelly on
(07:13):
demand from KFI AM six forty.Let's go down to Orange County for a
moment. The man was hospitalized afterbeing shot by a ride share driver Uber
specifically, who allegedly witnessed this manassaulting a woman and took matters into his
own hands. There's not a lotof information as far as the type of
(07:34):
attack, the severity of it,or even the degree of injury to the
woman in question. Not a lotof information, but here's what we do
now. Last night, around sevento fifty pm, an Uber driver was
dropping off a passenger in the seventyone hundred block of Custra Way in the
city of Stanton, if you happento know where that is, when this
(07:56):
Uber driver, according to him,saw a man assaulting a woman nearby.
It says assaulting, doesn't give anyspecifics. This is from the Orange County
Sheriff's Office. The man assaulting thewoman, only identified as a twenty year
old, sustained a gunshot wound andwas taken to the hospital in critical but
(08:18):
stable condition. He's still alive. The Sheriff's office said. The ride share
driver remained at the scene and calleddispatch to report the shooting. I don't
know whether this Uber driver had aconcealed carry permit. I do not know.
I don't know if he was drivingwith the gun already loaded, as
(08:41):
opposed to having the ammunition separate fromit, like in the trunk or something
like that. I don't know thatinformation. I do know that the woman
who was assaulted was treated at thescene for her injuries sustained during the assault,
but it does not say that shewent to the hospital. I don't
know what was happening when this Uberdriver approached, don't know the severity of
(09:09):
the assault, but I have alot of questions. In fact, if
you've watched or heard the news coveredsurrounding this, there is a likelihood that
this Uber driver shooter could face chargesa number of charges for the reasons that
I've kind of outlined, proportionality ofresponse, whether the law allows you to
(09:31):
protect someone else in that fashion, whether she was in grave danger, or
whether it was just something else.Did he shoot the guy in the back?
I don't know. I don't know. Those are things I don't know.
I do know that driving for Ubercan be dangerous, without a doubt
it can be. We've talked aboutthese stories about Uber drivers being attacked,
(09:56):
but that is not this, Thatis not what happened here. The Uber
driver's safety was not in question here. He was not in danger. Some
may call him a good Samaritan.I don't know, because there's too many
missing variables here. I don't knowwhether he was actually defending her or just
(10:18):
took an opportunity to shoot someone thealleged to sailant. As I said earlier,
he is alive. He's in criticalbut stable condition in the hospital.
We will learn more. But Iam curious Little Robin, and I mean
that respectfully to differentiate between you andBig Robin the boss here. I am
curious, Robin, what you mighthave gleaned from the story, something that
(10:41):
may have jumped out at you assomeone who drives for Uber. Well,
since I actually do it like afterthe show most of the time, So
after like ten, I go outuntil like three or four o'clock in the
morning. Woof Yeah, And Icarry a taser and by per spray.
(11:03):
Are you allowed to at this point? I honestly don't know, but you're
gonna do it anyway, Yeah, because it's Los Angeles and I'm a woman
driving at night. So I'm like, yeah, no, thank you,
I will take the chances. Isit standard now that most, if not
all Uber drivers have some sort ofcabin camera to get video of the person
(11:31):
getting in the car. At leastI think they're starting to come out with
it. I do have one fromthem in my car. Oh okay,
so they do provide them. Okay, See, I didn't know that that's
something new. Have you ever hada situation where you were genuinely concerned for
your safety. There's been a coupleof times where I get like really drunk
(11:54):
men that like profusely hit on meonce they know that I am a woman,
and it's really creepy, and oneof them almost like touched my arm
and thankfully we were literally at hisplace at this point. But for the
most of most of the time, you are driving that late grave graveyard shift
(12:18):
at least from ten thirty or sountil it's the wee hours of the morning.
Yeah. What about do you havelike a cadre of friends or other
fellow Uber drivers that you may inexchange information with. No, I do
not. They don't provide any ofthat kind of stuff, So you're really
out there by yourself. You don'thave any type of support group other than
(12:43):
just Uber. Yeah, I know. Have you have you heard anything from
anyone else as far as best practices. It's like, hey, Uber doesn't
recommend this, but you know youalways keep a crowbar under your seat or
something like that. Has anyone madeany type of recommendation to you talked about
having taser and pepper spray, butanything else that people use or you've heard
(13:07):
other drivers using. Honestly, no, because for the most part, I
think I've only gotten many Uber driverswhen I take Uber myself as a customer.
Uh huh, So I don't reallyhear them like talk about it,
And usually I always get the peoplethat don't want to talk at all,
(13:28):
so I just listen to music.Yeah, I don't like to talk to
Uber drivers. You need Yeah, this is just a transaction. You know.
I don't want you to start askingquestions about my life, and I
don't want to ask about yours.Yes, I'm going to tip you,
you know, I'm generous in thatway, but I don't want to have
a conversation because I don't want toreveal more information than just where I'm going.
(13:50):
But going back to the story,Uber said that they removed the driver's
access to the app pending and investigation. What does that usually? I mean,
do you know of any other driverwho's been suspended or put on a
holding pattern like that. No,I've actually never met anybody. No,
do they tell you specifically, orI should say, do they tell you
(14:13):
in a contractual sense what you canor cannot carry as a weapon or any
weapon at all. They might havelike fine prints, you know, like
the terms that you have to agreeto that are like twenty pages long.
It probably buried in there somewhere.Yeah, probably buried somewhere in there.
(14:35):
I think maybe when you get terminated, it's almost like door Dash, like
they just close your account completely andjust say like you're you're not allowed to
have another account. Are these connectedin any way, because I know a
lot of Uber drivers will do doorDash and what have you. Are they
connected, to the best of yourknowledge? No, I don't think so.
I mean, I know Uber eats. I'm sorry Uber Eats, That's
(14:56):
what I meant. Yeah, soif you get shut down as an Uber
driver, you would lose your Ubereats access as well, correct? Yeah,
okay, Yeah. I was justwondering because it's how long have you
been driving all told? Uh total? Maybe like a year? Has it
changed it all as far as expectationsor requirements of drivers in any way.
(15:20):
The only thing that has changed reallyas their earnings. I've noticed, like
I sometimes like if the person isreally open and they tell me like how
much they paid for it, andthen I tell them how much I get.
It's anywhere between like forty percent andlike sixty percent that Uber takes.
(15:43):
Does it change during surge pricing thatpercentage? Do you think? Honestly,
I don't think so. That's actuallyenlightening because they probably keep it in pretty
opaque That's the only word I canthink of, where you don't get to
see how much or what cut you'regetting of that fare. Yeah, they
(16:03):
don't, and it just in arandom amount just sort of shows up in
your account for that fair. Yeah. Yeah, it will show up like
do you want to accept this? And it will be like five seconds or
something. Oh you got to decidein five seconds? Yeah, just after
you it's like complete the fair.Well, it's sometimes it's during like the
ride before and it's like, oh, do you want to take this?
(16:26):
But for the most part, likeI say yes, even though like it
could be like three or four dollarsjust because they do percentage. So if
you keep saying no. Oh,then they'll keep track of that. Mm
hmm. Is it worth it stillfor you? Sometimes? Like I try
(16:48):
to just mostly do it on likeFriday, Saturday, and Sunday just because
everyone is usually pretty drunk, andI get like anywhere between like twenty five
and thirty. Do you get bettertips from the drunk folks? Yeah?
Oh okay, but you also getmore aggressive. Yeah. And you can
(17:11):
also now say no, like youcan just drop them off in the middle
of nowhere if you don't feel safe. Oh that's good. Yeah, that's
good. You don't have to acuallyknows if they're going to actually get out
of the car. Well, youknow, but but you don't have to
deposit them anywhere if you feel unsafe. No, you don't, okay.
Is there any guidance which is givento you before we go to break?
(17:33):
Any guidance given to you what todo if someone comes up to your car
who is not your fair? So, Hey, I gotta go. I'm
an emergency. Can you just driveme somewhere? What do they tell you
about people who are not the specificfair? Usually you don't actually know until
they get into the car. I'vehad that happen several times where the person
(17:56):
thinks it's a taxi for some reasonand they just get in the car and
I'm like, this seems weird,Like what is the name? You can
see the person's face, like ifI know, you can. If I
don't question Uber know, all youget is literally a name. That's strange.
(18:18):
Yeah, I don't know why.When I was in Chicago, I
had to upload my driver license StateI D because they've had issues and they
make it it's now they it's mandatoryfor riders to upload their ID, but
I don't know if it actually makesit to the driver. No, it
doesn't. Yeah, it's it's weirdbecause they make you upload pictures of you,
(18:44):
but they don't give it to theUber driver. They just give you
a name, like a general locationof where they're at. So that's why
I'm saying, like, sometimes youdon't even know that it's the wrong person
until you like something seems off andare already in your car. Oh that's
that's very dangerous. Yeah, LikeI actually had to like because this guy
(19:06):
was like acting a little weird withhis friend and I was like, what's
the name? And he tried tolook like at my phone, but I
have like a privacy phone, soyou have to look at a certain angle.
And he tried, and I waslike, yeah, this is not
a taxi, Like I don't knowwhere you are seeing that I have a
(19:27):
taxi on my car. Yeah,I couldn't be uber driver because the first
person who tries to do that,I'm escalating. We're gonna have a problem.
Yeah, thankfully, he like hewas fine and he just got out
with his friend. And then there'sanother time where this guy flagged me down
and stopped right in front of mycar. Well, see, I didn't
(19:52):
know I was in you know, like in danger really because you know,
he was a he was a gayguy. He seemed very like stable.
He was fine. So I waslike, what, like, are you
okay? Like is there's something wrong? But it seemed like, you know,
he was running out into the streetbecause you know, he was being
chased or something. And I waslike, okay, that's weird. And
(20:18):
then he was like when I toldhim, I was like, no,
like I it's not a taxi,Like I literally can't just take you.
Well, I'm glad that you're stillhere and you're safe. Next time hit
him run him down. It's laterwith mo Kelly caf I AM six forty
one Live Everywhere on the iHeartRadio app. You're listening to Later with Moe Kelly
on demand from KFI AM six fortyIt's Later with mo Kelly Live Everywhere the
(20:42):
iHeartRadio app. And a few monthsago, I think it was around March
or so, I had this conversationwith a regular commentator, Jackie Ray.
We went beyond the box score andwe made this bet that there would be
a major gambling schedule scandal within thenext three hundred and sixty five days.
A week later, less than aweek, actually, the scandal with Shohe
(21:03):
Otani's former interpreter broke, and Ithink it was a window into what was
going to becoming big picture across allsports, because if you had been paying
attention, this is just the latestissue, I should say, one of
the latest issues, not the onlyissue. Show Hey. Otani's former interpreter,
(21:23):
Epeid Mitsuhara, has admitted to thetheft of seventeen million dollars. I
still don't know how they did thatwithout Otani's knowledge, and he pleaded guilty
to two charges bank fraud and subscribingto a false tax return which says to
me that he was a financial advisor, not just an interpreter. He was
serving as some sort of an accountant. Sentencing is scheduled for October twenty fifth.
(21:48):
He faces a maximum sentence of thirtyyears in federal prison on the bank
fraud charge in three years on thetax return charge. And while discussing Johel
Tani, his interpreter, he paidMasuhara. I was saying, there's gonna
be more, and there have beenmore, but if you haven't been paying
attention, they were more even previousto this time, but they weren't as
(22:12):
big. Let me give you anexample. Back in twenty nineteen, Arizona
cornerback Josh Shaw suspended for gambling onan NFL game while on injured reserve.
In twenty twenty two, Atlanta widereceiver Calvin Ridley suspended for the entire season
for gambling on NFL games. Jetswide receiver coach Miles Austin suspended for a
(22:34):
year for betting on non NFL sportslast year. Twenty twenty three, Detroit
wide receiver Quintez Cephas, Detroit safetyCJ. Moore, and Washington defensive end
Shaka Tony suspended indefinitely for betting onNFL games in the twenty twenty two season.
Detroit wide receiver Jamison Williams and widereceiver Stanley Berryhill suspended six games each
(22:59):
for gambling. Indianapolis Colts cornerback IsaiahRodgers, senior defensive end Rashad Berry,
defensive tackle Demetrius Taylor suspended indefinitely.Tennessee right tackle Nicholas Pettitt Frere suspended six
games for betting while at an NFLfacility as a rookie. That's how you
mess off a career. Denver defensiven eeoma Awa Zurike suspended in definitely for
(23:26):
betting on league games during the twentytwo twenty twenty two season while a rookie
and in the NBA. This year, John tay Porter banned for life for
gambling on his own NBA games,And that had nothing to do with the
news which broke today in Major LeagueBaseball, where the Padres Tukupita Marcano has
(23:48):
been banned for life for baseball betsand others also punished. Today's San Diego
Padres infielder Marcano permanently banned for violatingthe league's gambling Marconnell's band was accompanied by
a one year suspension for four otherplayers Oakland Athletics reliever Michael Kelly, Minor
league players Jay Groom, Padres Organization, Jose Rodriguez Philadelphia Phillies infielder and Andrew
(24:15):
Saalfrank of the Arizona Diamondbacks, apitcher. Get this. Under Major League
Baseball's rules, personnel are allowed topartake in sports gambling, provided that it
is legal in their jurisdiction and theydo not bet on baseball or softball.
Each player violated the second part.Nobody is appealing this suspension, But talk
(24:41):
about if you're going to do somethingwhich may ruin your career. In your
career, be a little smarter aboutthis. Listen to this mark. Evidently
these players were making bets on baseballon a sports betting app, use their
real names and bank accounts. Youknow, as a reporter, I have
(25:04):
covered some ballplayers. Whatever their othertalents may be, not all of them
are the smartest guys on earth,And so the sports betting app reported it
to Major League Baseball. Hey,it seems a little odd that these pro
players are betting on baseball using ourapp. You may want to look into
(25:30):
this. Here's the thing. There'ssuch a short list of stuff you can't
do in certain professions that really justmake the world your oyster. You got
a great life, just a smallnumber of things you can't do. And
yet and baseball, they're saying youcan bet on any sport provided it's not
a diamond sport, a baseball orsoftball. Just leave those two alone.
(25:56):
Why because you obviously have inside informationas a player in Major League Baseball,
you have access to team injuries.Thinks of that. All you got to
do is not bet on baseball andsoftball. But not only do you do
that, you use your real nameand your real bank account. It wasn't
(26:18):
even like you asked, Hey,Keanu, can you like go make this
bet for me. I'll give youthe money, but I needed to go
through your bank account, and ifanything we win, I'll give you money
for taxes. That would have madesome sense, just a little bit of
sense. It's still you know, you're not putting yourself into clear but at
least it doesn't tied directly back toyou, which goes to why none of
(26:40):
them are is appealing their suspension. It's really just another form of professional Darwinism.
They you know, they're gonna landup where they belong. But also
in baseball, everyone knows the story, the cautionary tale of peoples. Everybody
knows. It's not like you're thefirst person you could say, no betting
(27:03):
on baseball. When did that happen? Don't get a bowl cut, don't
bet on your own sport. Andmaybe people who are listening right now didn't
quite catch it. There are twoplayers that I listed from the Philadelphia Phillies
organization who are suspended Pete Rose Phillies. I can't even feel bad for them
(27:30):
because it's not like they just wereyoung and they got caught up and they
didn't know better. If you playedbaseball, it's one of the things from
the professional players that I know andof dialogue with, they tell you specifically,
do not do this. It's almostlike freshman orientation. Do not do
this, or you are banned forlife. And they did it anyway,
and they use their real name,Sponge of Nobel laureates these guys. But
(27:55):
the larger point is sports betting isgoing to have to have what I would
call a come to Jesus meeting,or the sports leagues are gonna have to
have a come to Jesus meeting aboutthese sports betting organizations that they've aligned themselves,
be it DraftKings or fan Duel whereyou're in bed with them. They're
(28:15):
official sponsors a lot of these sportsleagues. You can't unring that bell,
but you're gonna lose more and moreplayers, or at least the ones who
are not superstars who said that greatloss, great great losses. Later with
mo Kelly caf I AM six fortywe're live everywhere on the iHeartRadio app.
We're going to talk about AI andteaching. When we come back. You're
(28:37):
listening to Later with Moe Kelly ondemand from KFI AM six forty. I
get it. When I was inschool, it's a lot different than the
way it is today. How kidslearn. It's very different today from all
that crazy math that they do andthe way that they have computers using the
(28:59):
internet. None of that was aroundwhen I was in school. And if
you're a parent with kids who arein grade school or middle school or even
high school, you probably are goingthrough the same thing. It's like,
gosh, it's really different now whenyou add AI into it. It's changing
not only how children learn, buthow teachers teach. California school districts are
(29:26):
signing more contracts for AI tools, from automated grading in San Diego to chatbots
in Central California, Los Angeles andthe Bay Area. English teachers say AI
tools can help them grade papers faster, get students more feedback, and improve
(29:47):
their learning experience. Teachers, accordingto this, use AI to do things
like personalized reading material, create lessonplans, and other tasks in order to
save time and reduce burnout. Nowthat I'm not going to argue, just
about every teacher I've known, includingmy parents, will go through periods of
(30:07):
burnout. Not enough hours in theday to grade exams, grade papers,
What have you prepared lesson plans forthe next day? There is a place
and this goes back to our conversationwith Tawala about the inevitability of AI.
But just because something's inevitable, justbecause something that's going to be adopted across
(30:29):
the board, it doesn't mean thatit doesn't come without negative aspects to it.
Mother and Son teachers Tobin and CherryShields utilize it at the high school
and collegiate level. Is going tomake our educational system more accurate, and
it's going to make it more interestingand more accessible and more creative, where
I think a lot of educators thinkit's going to do the hopp set Cherry,
(30:51):
an educator of thirty years, penningan opinion piece for Education Week titled
don't fan chat GBT use it asa teaching tool. I do think employers
in the future are going to beasking employees to work with AI. It's
just a lifescale that we are goingto have to perpetuate forward if we want
our students to be viable in theworkplace. My concern about chat GPT and
(31:18):
I dabble with it every once ina while to see the capability, see
how much is in its knowledge base. I may ask it about me,
or I'll ask it about real rudimentarythings, and it sounds like it's just
plagiarizing Wikipedia. It doesn't seem asif it has It can't discern between real
(31:41):
knowledge and just crowdsource knowledge. Itdoesn't seem that it can distinguish as far
as quality of sources for the information. That's what I don't think is ready
for prime time like that, AndI know people probably disagree with me,
But when you have teachers relying onchat GPT. That gives me pause.
It does, I don't. Oh. It's two things. One the quality
(32:07):
of the information that it has,and also you are basically allowing yourself to
be replaced. If you're going toentrust all of this, the grading of
papers and tests, personalizing reading material, creating lesson plans, Well, what
the hell do they need you for? Or does it it make it more
(32:27):
difficult the next time you're going toask for more money. I understand automation
is inevitable on some level when youtalk about certain jobs, but if you
