You're listening to Later with Moe Kellyon demand from KFI AM six forty and
it's Friday Nights with Natica de laCruz. Natica, It's good to see
you. It is so good tosee you. It seems like I haven't
seen you in forever, but herewe are. We are back together again.
And while you were gone, Igot to discover some new places in
Southern California that I haven't been, and I took a nice drive to the

(00:24):
Santa Barbara Zoo out in Santa Barbara, where adventure awaits. The Santa Barbara
Zoo is nestled in thirty lush acresoverlooking the beautiful, stunning Pacific Ocean and
the Santa Ynez Mountains. The SantaBarbara Zoo is probably one of the most
beautiful places you'll ever see, andthey have these amazing animals. It's a

(00:44):
vibrant world of exploration, learning andexcitement. The Santa Barbara Zoo is home
of over five hundred animals from aroundthe globe, and it offers captivating glimpses
into the life of creatures large andsmall. From the majestic Missa giraffes that
grace the African savannah to the playfulantics of the endangered amoral leopards. Every

(01:07):
visit promises a new adventure. Youcould wander through the beautifully landscape habitats and
encounter species like the California conder, the Western Lowland gorillas who looks like my
uncle, and adorable humble penguins. And trust me, I wanted to bring
one home, but unfortunately my tubisn't big enough, and I don't have
a pool, and I don't havea big backyard, so that I couldn't

(01:32):
bring one home. Okay, sothe zoo is just I mean, the
zoo isn't just about observing animals,It's about getting close and personal with them.
You could also feed the giraffe.I got to feed the giraffe for
a few bucks. You could givethem a lettuce and feel the excitement as
it gently plucks the food from yourhand. You could also watch the delight

(01:53):
of children's faces as they ride thezoo train, which I highly suggest,
which travels through the grounds over uniqueviews of the exhibits. And don't miss
the barnyard where the kids can petfriendly goats and sheep. Mahat. It
really is a lot of fun foradults and children, and as an adult,

(02:13):
I felt like a kid, butyou know, like at the end
of the day, I'm still anadult. But like I said, the
train ride is definitely a must. The Santa Barbara Zoo is committed to conservation
and education, making an ideal destinationfor curious minds engage in interactive exhibits that
highlights the zoo efforts to protect endangeredspecies and habitats, excuse me participants,

(02:37):
enhands on educational programs designed to inspirea love and a wildlife and a nature
world in a natural world. TheZoo's involvement in various breeding programs and also
wildlife rehabilitation efforts demonstrates its dedication topreserving biodiversity, and they are very strong
and adamant on that. The excitementdoesn't stop at the animal exhibits though.

(03:00):
The Santa Barbara Zoo also hosts avariety of special events throughout the year that
promise fun for the whole family, like, for example, during the holidays,
they have what's called the Zoo Lights, and that is during the holiday
season, and they also have whatthey call Zubru, a beer festival,
which I thought that was a prettycreative name, so there's always something to

(03:21):
do at the Santa Barbara Zoo.And with its breathtaking coastal views and beautifully
manicured gardens, the Santa Barbara Zoois a feast for the census. So
stroll around the grounds and you couldjust feel the tranquility, the peace,
and you could even feel the oceanbreeze. The scenic backdrop provides the perfect

(03:43):
setting for an enjoyable day out. It's a place where joy meets discovery and
where every corner brings you face toface with the wonders of the natural world.
So pack your SPF, pack yourgood sense of humor, pack some
good shoes and take a stroll tothe Santa Barbara Zoo where the wild things
are waiting for you. It isopen daily nine thirty am to five pm,

(04:09):
rain or shine. It's located atfive hundred Ninos Drive in Santa Barbara
and it's easy accessible and offers ampleparking. Tickets can also be purchased online
or you could also purchase them atthe gate, and they do have special
rates for children's, seniors and groups. Prices range from like fifteen to twenty

(04:30):
five dollars and also affordable. Yeah, it is, it's not that bad.
The train ride was I'm maybe fivesix bucks, I can't remember.
And also don't forget to stop bythe zoo gift shop. They have some
unique souvenirs that will definitely remind youof your wild adventure. So for more
information, you could log onto wwwdot sbzoo dot org. That's sbzoo dot

(04:53):
org. And it really is probablyone of the most beautiful zoos I've been
to. I've been to many.I've been to the Bronx who have been
to the La Zoo, but thisone is just very clean, and the
fact that it's near the beach,I think that's what makes it so special,
since Santa Barbara's not right around thecorner for a lot of us.

(05:15):
I noticed that you said it closedat five pm. I don't remember as
far as when the La Zoo wouldclose, but five pm seems a little
bit early. Did that impact yourday when you were there, Well,
I went early in the morning, but I know they they have the animals.
I talked to someone that worked thereand I was kind of curious about

(05:35):
that too, But they have themon a set schedule of when to eat
and when to sleep. Oh okay, that makes sense, but I never
really thought about that. As faras visitors, Oh yeah, visitors,
Well, I will say, likeI said, they are open nine thirty
to nine thirty am to five pm, rain or shine. But you know,

(05:56):
if you want to go, evenif it's on a Saturday, they're
open every single day. I said, just that you go there early.
And also one thing is, likeI said, bring your SPF because it
could be hot over here in youknow, Bourbon, because we're in Bourbon,
right La. But it could beovercast. In Santa Barbara. When
I went, it was a littleovercast, So I did have a sweater

(06:16):
and I did wear sunscreen forty fivebecause even on a cloudy day you could
still burn. And remember, likeI said, it's very very close to
the beach. I always remembered goingto the La Zoo as a child,
multiple occasions. It's a big dealgoing to petting zoo, that kind of
thing. But I wonder about zoosand kids today. Did you see a

(06:40):
lot of kids? Was it wellattended by young people? Were they and
were they on their phones because evenyoung children have phones. No, I
don't think I saw a child witha phone. I also saw that a
lot of kids were very much engagingand they were quick to want to pet

(07:01):
or feed as I mentioned earlier, and also during certain times of the day
in the middle there's this beautiful grassarea. It's kind of like a platform,
and they have someone who speaks aboutyou know, whether it's a bird
or you know, a certain animal, and kids are very much engaging,
you know, and and you learna lot. And it's a really it's

(07:26):
it's it's it's a beautiful zoo andit's clean. I've never seen such a
clean, beautiful zoo in my life. I mean, I've experienced the La
Zoo before, but it's different becauseyou kind of hike up and it's in
like nearby Griffith Park. But thiswas just you feel like you were just
out. Honestly, it didn't feellike you were in a zoo. It

(07:47):
felt like you were out some somesort of animal kingdom, some sort of
jungle or something like a preserve.Yes, but beautiful, just very very
clean, and the animals are justamazing. And like I said, for
a few bucks, you could feedyou could feed the goats, and you
could feed the giraffe, and youcould take that train. That train ride
is really really nice, and it'sjust a nice sometimes it's nice to get

(08:09):
away from from from LA, youknow, and go near the beach area
and just you know, kind ofindulge and just feel a little bit of
peace and serenity. And that's kindof what I was looking for too.
I took my car and went andI said, wherever my car takes me,
that's where I'm going. And thenI saw the sign as I was
driving on the one on one andI was like, huh, let me

(08:31):
see what this is about. AndI was like, Okay, it's affordable.
I could God. Yeah, weall have to make those decisions along
the way. Yeah, because youknow, groceries are expensive, so is
food. When we come back,we'll have more with not A Caadela Cruz
as far as Friday Nights with Nautakaand also her Hidden Gym. So keep
it right here. You're listening toLater with Moe Kelly on demand from KFI

(08:52):
AM six forty, and we continuewith Friday Nights with Naicadella Cruz and her
Hidden Gym. Thank you, Moe. Today's hidden is probably my youngest hidden
gem. Her name is Tina Ramirezand she has always loved the ocean.
Growing up in Santa Monica, thebeach was her sanctuary, a place of
endless waves and the salty breeze thatfelt like home. So when her high

(09:13):
school announced a community service project toclean up the local beaches, Tina didn't
hesitate to sign up. On abright Saturday morning, armed with gloves and
trash bags, Tina joined a groupof volunteers at the Santa Monica Pier.
The beach was bustling with joggers, families, and surfers, but Tina's focus

(09:33):
was on the bits of plastic anddebris scattered along the shoreline. With determination
in her eyes, she knelt downand started to pick up trash piece by
piece. As she worked, Tinacouldn't help but reflect on how much the
beach meant to her and to everyonein the community, and even myself.

(09:54):
It was a place for relaxation, for play, and for connecting with nature.
Each cigarette butt and b cap shecollected felt like a little small victory,
a step towards preserving this precious environment. Throughout the day, Tina bonded
with other volunteers, sharing stories andlaughter admits in their shared mission. Together,

(10:15):
they combed the sands, making anoticeable difference as they filled bag after
bag with litter. As the sunslowly began to set, casting a golden
glow over the Pacific, Tina stoodback and surveyed the beach with a sense
of pride. It wasn't just aboutcleaning up trash. It's about protecting something
they all cherished. With a renewedappreciation for the ocean and a commitment to

(10:39):
environment, Tina knew that this wouldn'tbe her last day of volunteering. The
beach had given her so much, and now she was giving back while i
with a smile, Tina Ramirez leftthe beach knowing that her efforts, alongside
those of her fellow volunteers from Healedthe Bay, had made a difference,

(11:01):
one piece of trash at a time. Healthebay dot Org is a prominent environmental
nonprofit organization based in Santa Monica dedicatedto protecting coastal waters and watersheds of southern
California. Founded in nineteen eighty five, Heal the Bay has become a leading
advocate for clean waters initiative initiatives, coasting preservation, and environmental education. The

(11:28):
organization's mission centers around ensuring the healthand sustainability of marine and freshwater ecosystems throughout
research, education, community outreach, and advocacy. One of Heal of the
Healed the Bay's primary focuses is waterquality monitoring and advocacy. They actively monitor

(11:50):
water quality at beaches throughout southern California, providing the public with up to date
information on pollution levels and BA conditions. This data is crucial for informing beachgoers,
policymakers, and community members about environmentalhealth risks at the importance of conservation

(12:11):
efforts. In addition to their monitoringefforts, Heal the Bay engages in extensive
community outreach and education programs. AsI mentioned earlier, they offer educational programs
for schools and community groups, teachingabout marine biology, pollution prevention, and
sustainable practices. These programs aim toinspire environmental stewardship and empower individuals to take

(12:39):
action to protect local waterways and coastalhabitats. We have all been to the
beach at one time or another, and trust me, this is the season
to go to the beach, andyou know it is just it's nice to
go to the beach and see aclean beach and know that one person at
a time can make a difference. For more information how you could get involved

(13:03):
or donate, please visit Healthebay dotorg. And that's h e A L
T h E b A dot org. This if I could just jump in
for one second. This is verytimely because we have been talking all week
about how dirty La County beaches havebeen for the duration of this summer,

(13:28):
and how the beach warnings had goneout where we weren't supposed to swim in
them, we weren't supposed to doanything in the water. And to know
that someone is actively caring and goingabove and beyond what the county is doing
is encouraging, honestly. Right well, you know, here's the thing is
that there is there is There isa big body of water. We live

(13:54):
by a big body of water, and the beach and the sand goes on
for days, and even if it'sone mile of a clean beach, it
is such a big difference, youknow what I mean. And it is
so nice to see, it isso nice to see even even one part
that is no seaweed, no,no bottle caps, no, no,

(14:16):
no, no, no soda cans, no bottle of water. It's so
nice to see that, and it'sso nice to have no organization that is
is making a difference, Like yousay, one piece of trash at a
time, you know. But Idon't think the beach the beaches can here
in southern California can all be cleanedon one day unless there was about three

(14:37):
million people that went out and volunteered. But and it still may not be
enough, and it still may notbe enough. But I tell you that
I'm I'm so glad that this younglady, Tina Ramiriez. I want to
say thank you for letting me shadowyou and for being my youngest Hidden Gem
and Go class of twenty twenty five. Yes, I wish I was wired

(15:01):
a little bit differently. When Iwas seventeen, I wasn't thinking about the
world on any levels, thinking aboutme and what I need to do,
yes, and what I was tryingto do either that night, that weekend,
or you know, my immediate future. I couldn't even concede. I
know it's a little bit different becausewe do have the Internet, we have
a degree of a wherewithal an understandingof our world beyond just our immediate circumstances.

(15:26):
But we're not all wired the sameway to care about something greater than
us or something that's completely unrelated tous. The beach is not us.
It may be in our neighborhood, but it's not something that I don't know.
I don't know that everyone thinks inthose terms, especially at that young
age. I know I did not. Well, I have to say something,
you know. And here's the otherthing. At least when I was
in high school back in the latenineteen hundreds, you know, we didn't

(15:50):
have, you know, sign upand volunteer for this, or sign up
and volunteer from that, And wedidn't have to do a community service,
you know what I mean. Nowadaysin high school, even when my she
graduated in class of twenty twenty two, she had to do community services and
she just had to get she hadto get it signed from the director and
they had to put a stamp orsomething saying that she did so many hours.

(16:12):
So the fact the fact that, and I do believe if I'm correct,
they do require it from many ofthe schools here in Los Angeles,
and so we didn't have those options. And now there is more awareness,
and yes, she is a beachgoer, of course. But when you have
someone going, hey, these arethe places you could volunteer, pick one

(16:33):
of the ten and then you know, give your time. Then I think
that's when you kind of have thatspark that I fell in love with something
and I want to keep on doingthis. That's good that schools are being
active in the creation of not onlygood students, but good citizens, right,
And that's something I don't think anyonecan really argue with or complain with.

(16:53):
We need more good citizens out there. It's nice to have some good
students, but we need some goodcitizens and some good people who are i'll
say social minded, who care aboutsomeone or something other than just themselves in
this me eye uh, you know, selfie society that we live in today.
So side note, Mo, wouldyou and I be friends in high

(17:14):
school? We went to the samehigh school. Look, if we went
to the same high school, I'lltell you this right now. I'm quite
sure you're pretty popular with the guysin high school. I was. I
was a band geek, so probablynot. You probably weren't. Check.
Were you one of those women whodated the athletes? Yeah that's what I
thought. Yeah, Uh huh,you were no, we probably would not

(17:37):
be in the same social group.I plead the fifth. But I will
say this. I was friends witheveryone from different color, from different sizes.
I even had a good friend thatwasn't special. Edge of your best
friends were nerds. Trying to tellme no, But but I'm saying I
was. I was popular and Iwas cool. But I loved all people,
and I still love all people. If you're good to me, I'm

(17:59):
good to you. That's not allpeople loved me. Not a people love
the nerds. Not all people lovedthe people in band I touched. It
was nerdy. I was geeky.I was awkward. Look at me now,
I'm nerdy, geeky, you know, awkward. The more things change,
the more they stayed the same. When we come back, we have
the Runner Report with none other thanMark Ronner, so keep it right here.

(18:33):
Culture Report with Mark Ronner forty islater with Kelly, but coming up
right now is the Run Report withthe Mark Ronner. Long Legs is a
serial killer suspense horror movie that seemedto slip under the radar. Come out

(18:57):
of nowhere, just kind of appeared. It's got Nick Cage is the bad
guy, but He's not really featuredin any of the ads or commercials or
the poster. Here's a bit ofthe trailer. Is it scary being a
lady FBI agent? Yeah, takea nice long look. Aletta was left

(19:19):
with the bodies signed one word.I saw these troyes up out of the

(19:40):
sea with seven heads and ten horns, and on his horns he wore ten
crowns. Johnny Chad was written ablasphemous name. Why aren't you telling me?
Okay and kill again. I knowyou're not afraid of a little bit

(20:06):
of dark, because you are thedark. Okay, you're scared yet?
Are you scared? It stars MicahMonroe, you might remember from another unsettling
little horror movie from a few yearsback called It Follows. She plays an
FBI agent with some sort of nottoo well defined psychic ability, and she's

(20:26):
on the case of a serial killerwho kills families with children pretty gruesomely,
but who doesn't seem to be doingit himself. Blair Underwood, where's that
guy been? It's her FBI supervisor. This is like one of those Quentin
Tarantino rediscoveries kind of inspired casting here, he's the older boss mentor figure.
Alicia Witt plays the agent's mom,and on a in personal note, it's

(20:48):
weird to me to see Alicia Wittplaying a mom. Now, my god,
I feel old. There's also asatanic a cult angle to this story,
but it's not a full on devilor exorcist or deal. In fact,
I don't want to tell you toomuch about this movie, which can
be awkward in a movie review, because I think it's best to go into
this one cold and just strap in. What I will say is long legs

(21:11):
pardon me. It's very creepy anddisturbing. It's a bit of a slow
burn, but the atmosphere and thedread are really messed up and palpable from
the get go. It made mejump a few minutes into the movie,
and that doesn't happen too often. You might get some vibes of other movies
like Maybe Seven or Silence of theLambs. It made me think of a
terrific Japanese thriller that's stuck with meever since I saw it in nineteen ninety

(21:32):
seven called Cure by Kiyoshi Kirosawa.Seek that one out. But this isn't
really directly like any of those othermovies just vibes. Long Legs is its
own thing. It's worth seeing inthe theater if you're into disturbing stories that'll
make you feel like you started offlike say, watching a true crime show,
and then things spiraled into a horrorlike a carnival ride, and you
can't get off it until it's cometo a complete stop. It gets pretty

(21:55):
messed up. This is an original. It's not tongue in cheek at all.
It's not a remake or a sequel. If you take a first date
you don't know very well, youmay be back to swiping left and right
again pretty much immediately. Now let'stalk about Nick Cage. It's probably hard
to know what to do with himat this point because he's so well known
and his eccentricities and over the toppersona are so well known. I couldn't

(22:17):
stand the Renfield movie with him asDracula, but I loved Pig and I
loved Mandy, and I think thoseare both streaming on Hulu now. So
there's a couple more to add toyour lists if you've missed those. And
since we're talking about recent Cage, the Color Out of Space from an HP
Lovecraft story isn't bad either. Whenyou get to something meta like the Unbearable
Weight of Massive Talent, where Cagehimself is a character, I think you're

(22:38):
kind of in John Malkovich territory, and I don't know where you go from
there. You certainly don't disappear intoroles as an actor anymore. Well,
this is a good use of Cage. He is an exceptionally bizarre killer,
and that doesn't spoil a thing foryou. Here's the message from a promotional
phone number for the movie, witha recording from Cage in character John,

(23:11):
You'm he burns now. I firstlistened to that while the long suffering One

(23:34):
was in the room and didn't knowwhat it was, and the expressions on
her face were quite enjoyable. Thisis from IMDb. It says test audiences
praised Nicholas Cage's performance and mentioned thathe was so off putting that it could
potentially scare viewers off. Now that'squite a compliment. The perpetrator of all
this is a writer and director namedOsgood Perkins aka Oz Perkins. He's done

(23:56):
a handful of other spooky things, including The Black Coat's Daughter Gretel and Hansel
and I am the pretty thing thatlives in the house. He should probably
be on a law enforcement watch listof some sort, and I can't wait
to see what he does next. He's also an actor who's popped up in
Legally Blonde, in Nope, andother random and congruous things over the years.
Again, maybe an ankle monitor forhim something. Here's your pull quote

(24:18):
publicist long legs. No one's gonnaspread him for you after the movie,
but it will bother you for awhile. And just one more thing,
I'm a fan of watching other peoplewatch horror movies. My god, I'd
love to see this one again ifI could sit next to Tawala. I
don't think he's going to allow you. No, I don't think he is.
It's very worthwhile. And oh,I know that you're gonna be first

(24:41):
in line to see this. Iactually might, if only because I'm a
Nicholas Cage fan, not so muchof his singing, but his acting.
I admire the real strategic way they'rekind of keeping him hidden. It really
heightens the impact when you do seehim because we're also used to him.
I mean, we've grown up withhim. When you see him in this,

(25:02):
it's not what you expect, nomatter what you've heard me say here
tonight. It's hard to believe. But he's had like almost forty years in
the business on screen that we've seenhim. Yeah, we really have grown
up with him. And he's youngerthan I thought. I think he's only
fifty nine or sixty or something likethat. And he's been around since Valley
Girl, I think is eighty foureighty ish, Yes, somewhere around there.

(25:26):
He's been in so many things, and you do have to kind of
admire the way he reinvents himself.Even if I did admittedly hate Renfield,
they're not all going to be winners. No, I didn't like everything,
but I've seen just about everything ofhis and Renfield was not a great movie.
But that's okay. I can nameit, name any great actor,

(25:47):
and they've had some not so greatmovies. Yeah, absolutely, And it
takes I think it takes something toWe've we've talked before about how if you've
got actors who are either well knownor of limited reign, and I don't
think he's of limited range, yougot to find the right vehicle for them.
Like my favorite example is Steve McQueenbecause I love Steve McQueen. I

(26:07):
think he's the coolest man who everlived, but I don't think he was
a terrific actor. Same with ClintEastwood, and they put him to good
use in this. If you thinkthat phone call was creepy, you're going
to enjoy this movie. And therewere some younger people in the auditorium with
me, and I was kind ofkeeping an eye on them, but I
didn't want to keep too close ofan eye on them because apparently school's out

(26:27):
and they were sort of younger peopleand that would have been creepy. Oh
so you don't do creepy now.I try not to, you know,
unless there's good money involved. Okay, I'll try to remember that when we
come back. The new trailer hasdropped four Captain America, Brave, Brave,
New World, and everyone, genuinelyeveryone is talking about it. And

(26:51):
also we have to go back tothe very first name that movie called classic.
You made fun of me, Youthought I was out of my mind
because a movie I said was acult classic you said was not a cult
classic. Well I have the proofnow, the definitive proof that it is
a cult classic, and you willall have to apologize to me or not,

(27:12):
but I'll at least present the casefor it. You're listening to later
with Moe Kelly on Demand from KFIAM six forty. We'll go back to
the very first week of the show. The very first name that movie called
classic. One of the first clipswhich was chosen by someone was the movie

(27:33):
The Fish That Saved Pittsburgh. Ithad all these NBA stars of the day,
late nineteen seventies in the movie. It had all sorts of cameos,
people like Stockard Channing, Jonathan Winter's, big names, big names. And
I was ridiculed saying that's not amovie cult classic. I've never heard of

(27:56):
that. And I heard from callers, I heard from people on social media
saying that I had no idea whatI was talking about. And now today
I am vindicated. On a friend'sshow on KJLH one or two point three,
host Tammy Mack, who's been aguest on this show, she was

(28:21):
conducting an interview with the legendary DebbieAllen, the great choreographer, iconic actress,
dancer. You may know her fromFame and other projects, and in
the course of the conversation, TammyMack, the hostess show. Let Debbie
know that she's been a longtime fanof her. Well, let me just

(28:45):
play the audio and just go aheadand get my vindication. It was the
world that I was most interested in, and so that turned into everything.
And here I am. I rememberyou. This is my favorite. Everybody
remembers you from fame. Hey,sister, I remember you from The Fish
that Saved Pittsburgh. Tell me I'mnot a fan. Don't you dare?

(29:08):
Don't you dare? That is allthe way. At the beginning, I
stopped knocking around in those plastic pants, some set through pants. That movie.
I'm I put that a big chapterin my book. That's when I
met my husband Norman. And Imet him on that job. But every
basketball star in the world was inthat movie. Yeah, and I'm running
around in those plastic pants. Buthe was more than hot. He was

(29:30):
worse than hot. That's all Ican tell you. How did you pick
Norman out of all of those basketballplayers. I was trying not to pick
him. I thought he was soarrogant and all like that. But you
know what, he was his ownman. The moment I met him,
I liked him. And it tookus a couple of years before we got
together. When I came to LAI went to a Laker game and he
looked up. He said, whatare you doing here? I said,

(29:51):
well, I'm working here on theshow called Fame. He said, you've
been here. I said a coupleof months, and you just you haven't
called me. I'm like no.And it turned out it was like oil
and water that just exploded. Yeah. Yeah, and how many years now?
Forty years long? Ja, fortyyears later, I have been vindicated.

(30:12):
Thank you coming back, Thank you, Debbie Allen. The Fish that
Saved Pittsburgh is a veritable cult classic. Let me just say this real quick
before we get into Captain America.Kareem ab Duel Jabbarrow's in the movie,
Julius Irving, doctor j Jonathan Winters. I told you about Stockard Channing,
Flip Wilson, so many recognizable names, faces, stars. I think everyone

(30:36):
owes me an apology. I willapologize. I'll be the first to apologize
