Speaker 1 (00:01):
Fox Sports a big boom after the All Star Game
starts the second half of the Major League Baseball season. Wow,
that was the That was bigger. That boom was bigger
than what we saw last night in Miami. Uh. The
the fireworks few and far between in the Midsummer Classic. Um,
maybe a Midsummer night's dream or nightmare to some depending

(00:22):
on how much you love the game of baseball. Last
that was a tough watch, Jonas a difficult one for
the All Star Game. By the way, I wouldn't normally
say it's a b k R edition. No John Ramos today.
F that guy John Ramo's taking advantage of his nine
weeks of vacation that he's got here at Fox Sports Radio.

(00:46):
So we've got a tag team effort of Joel Elliott
and Sam Kinsley is gonna be um hanging out with
us and executive producer today is Eric Robertson. We're gonna
have a lot of fun, but probably more fun than
what we had during the ten indings of last night's
All Star Game in Miami. Yeah, you know, I uh
I love Fox Dan, I really do. And um, that
was brutal. That was brutal to watch, all Right, and

(01:10):
I think Fox did everything within their power to try
and spice that game up, and it was just not
a good baseball game. The selfie Nelson Cruise taken, the
selfie with Joe West was was so ridicoud. That's that's
when I officially turned the game off. I said, that'll, that'll,
that's gonna go ahead. That I will see. Uh, I

(01:33):
just did you wait through the at bat to at
least see how Nelson Cruz fared in? Then at I
did the worst thing I could have possibly done, And
I saw the reactions to it on Twitter, and I
saw some people doing like the I'm laughing so hard,
I'm crying emoji, and I immediately just said that those
people don't have a comedic bone in their body. I
cannot associate myself with this event any longer. And I

(01:54):
went ahead and I just disengaged. I put up a
crying emoji because they were tears of pain watching that
specific that happened last. What I wanted to see was
that Joe West. What Joe West should have done is
if there was a ball that was right down the middle,
should have just called it a ball and tried to
favor Nelson Cruz But the the fact is that became

(02:18):
the most memorable moments of the All Star Game last night.
And I think that's not a reflection on how maybe
lame the idea was to take a selfie, but I
just maybe what the All Star Game now is. Fox
did try their darnist as you said, interviews of players
as they're going to the plates. Okay, so between batters
box and the on deck circle, Ken Rosenthal sitting there

(02:42):
hanging out doing interviews. You had Alex Rodriguez going out
to Zach Cozart and Nolan Arronado doing interviews. During half innings.
You had Bryce Harper miked up in right field having
a full interview during play. So like you're trying to
figure out, what else can we do this wise up
this game or to make this more appealing, and the

(03:04):
old saying of it is what it is. That's what
I think the All Star Game is. You can't You
can only do so much to spice it up, because
in the end, Jonas, it's a baseball game that doesn't
count with players who are maybe near the end of
the game, top players in Major League basement. Yeah, and
also it should have never counted. It should have never

(03:27):
met home field, but I think not having the home
field aspect to it and having that impact the World
Series did take away from the game a little bit.
It did like it did feel like it was well.
I mean, who cares, you know, And I get why
it should never be that, but I think I'm done
with All Star games. I think I'm done with them,
and I think every single All Star Game should be
played at the end of the season. What so you

(03:49):
think like the middle of the season, like why this
was so the n b A and everybody, NHL, the NFL,
the NFL is onto something. The NFL does it the
right way. The Pro Bowls atrocious too. I'm not trying
to defend the NFL, even though I get accused of
doing that way too much. The NF the Pro Bowls
absolutely atrocious. But it should always be done at the

(04:09):
end of the season because this whole First of all,
when you're growing up, you're never told, hey, just eat
half of your dinner, then we'll have dessert and then
you eat the other half. What No, you wait until
the end of your dinner and then you celebrate or
do it. I'm I'm I like to earn things, so
I like to feel like I've earned it before I
accept it. It's halfway through the year and these guys

(04:32):
are out, Hey selfies, look at me, everybody's buddies. No,
wait till the end of the season. If you don't
want to participate, you don't want to participate, but just
give these guys a week off in the middle of
the year, make that the break, and then you have
the All Star Game at the end. It's it's totally
ridiculous to all of a sudden, it's Friday and again,
and it's like they were just friends four days ago.
Now they're enemies. Tune in seven Pacific times. What the

(04:55):
hell is that? Would you? So? What? What would that
at least change? Would it? Would it change the fact
that our expectations too high for expecting this to be
that entertaining in July, where at least it was at
the end of the year. We know what we would
be getting. Why are we rewarding half? Like that's what
I understand. Why do you reward half? You know what

(05:19):
I mean? Like? Like, what is this like? Oh man,
this guy was great for three months. Yeah, I get
that aspect of it. I I just I look at
it and I understand like with the NFL, like there's
there's no way you can do it because first of all,
the NFL season is way too short. Yeah you know,
like yeah, week seven goes around. I'm still excited for

(05:40):
the pomously he'd throw a pro. But like everybody knows this,
the worst week during the NFL season is when your
favorite team is on a bye week. It's terrible. It's
it's an awful feeling because you're you're looking around going
I can't get like at least fantasy football. And for
you degenerate gamblers out there, Dan, I know you're a
big gambler. For you guys out there, like you can

(06:00):
find something every single week, but when your team's on
a by, that sucks. Man. The only thing worse than
Week seventeen in my mind are the six team by
weeks in the NFL. Okay, like when six teams are
on by when you just know that there's not Like
when you're scrolling down for your live scores and Fantasy
football and like the scroll goes like a half an

(06:21):
inch and you're like, wait, that's all that there is
and you look at your bench, it's completely fold because
everybody's on a buy says Byes. So you couldn't do
that in the NFL. This is what I think. I
would be the guy, if you want to compare it
to dinner, I would be the guy who always tells
the uh, the server, you know what, we're stuffed from
our meal, no dessert. Because I get to the end

(06:42):
of the year and I'm like, Okay, I don't need
to see any more of of of basketball or football
like I've I've had my fill of it. So I
I don't mind baseball in that sense. I just think
we have to accept what it is. And I'm not
sure that any change that they do with the game
Jonas will make a differ. For instance, the reason because
the reason of that is because we saw the home

(07:05):
run derby on Monday night and the ratings were the
highest since two thousand nine. They were the second highest
since nine and for the first time. Really, I think
you see the stars come out to play when you
see Aaron Judge. What do you want to see Aaron
Judge do? That's all he did on Monday last night.

(07:25):
He had three at bats. I was interested to see
how you would fare against Max Scherzer, and then to
be honest, I wasn't sure when he would come up again,
because you don't know on how the game's gonna play out,
but that first at bat you want to see. But
on Monday night, I got to see a heck of
a lot of them on Monday Night. Even though gian
Carlos Stanton lost, his at bat was shirley entertaining when
he was going up against Gary Sanchez. When you have

(07:47):
those stars taking parts, Cody Bellinger was even somewhat of
a draw. When you have them taking part in that
sort of festivity, I think it's great. I think of
Major League Baseball really wanted to up it, and I
know teams would be dead against this, just like a
lot of them arerow the slam duncottes. They have their
guys participate. Is to have the pictures start to throw
the fastest pitch. I would love to see you all

(08:08):
this chatman try to go in there clock one oh five,
one oh six, to do something kind of like they're
doing the slap shot in the in the NHL All
Star weekend. Those are the sort of things that I
think that that a baseball weekend would need. But the
All Star Game you can only do so much, and
it is what it is. I almost fell asleep in
the ninth inning of a won one game last night.
Oh yeah, I don't even know if I got that far,
to be honest with you, it just it became bad.

(08:31):
It became background noise. I just and here's the other thing.
And I tweeted this out last night for all fourteen
people to follow me. I think, if you're gonna send
Alex Rodriguez out there and he's gonna go and interview
guys on the on the infield, how he didn't get
his shoes dirty blows my mind. But that's another point altogether.
But if you're gonna send Alex Marve or Alex Marvez,
Alex Rodriguez out there to to interview these guys on

(08:53):
the infield, could at least pass a breathalyzer around. Let's
see who got South Beach the night before. Let's let's
turn this into the spectacle it is. It no longer counts,
So what are we doing? I mean, I would use
every prop possible, beer bonds, breath alyzers. Um, you know,
see which guy can you know, do the the move

(09:14):
where he spins on his the bat around? See who
can walk to the straightest afterwards? Turn this into a carnival.
It was basically was played in a carnival. That one
of the worst design stadiums I've ever seen in my life.
None of the none of that stadium makes any sense whatsoever.
You're in South Beach, it's closed, and you've got weird
stuff behind the outfield wall. That just doesn't make any

(09:34):
sense whatsoever. But I digress. I just think if if
let's acknowledge that yes, this is an exhibition, it no
longer counts. I mean, Fox did as much as they
possibly could, but I just think, why are we having
it in the middle of the season, Like, have it
at the end. Do what the NFL does. I just
think it makes more sense. Same with the n b
A and the NHL. The NHL All Star Game and

(09:55):
the skills competition is an embarrassment. If I got invited
to be in the nh else skills competition, I'd retire
from the sport. That it's the worst. I thought that
the the slap shot, the hardest shot was something that
was interesting, That's that's cool. But when I saw a
guy walk out with like a flag and a hat
on and like two sticks, and he was like, oh,

(10:16):
I'm gonna take the goalie and it's just, man, what
are we doing here? Like, have some class. I've been
able to cover a couple of All Star games in
some pretty unique spots, including New York City, and I
could tell you that after a home run derby on
Monday night, there were about five players left in the
locker room and then included Justin Morena and Josh Hamilton
who had to stay because everybody left to go out

(10:38):
and party. The same thing when they arrive on Sunday night,
everybody goes out to party, and then on Tuesday night,
everybody also goes out to party. So people are leaving Miami.
The players are leaving Miami today or have left today
to go and start their All Star break. But they
have got three nights of pure celebration on South Beach
and all around South Florida. So that's what that's what
really really draws the players to the I mean, and

(11:00):
I just think if you, if you ask a lot
of these players, they'll never Most of these guys will
never say this publicly because they don't want to get
a bad rap and they don't want to be ostracized
by people around Major League Baseball. So they can't be
a part of the vote. So and so in next
time campaign that nerd fest that went on last week.
But if you ask a lot of these guys, hey,
would you rather go play in the All Star Game

(11:22):
or would you rather just have a week off? I'd
rather have a week off, like they don't. They're not
they don't really care about playing. It's an honor, but
let's do it at the end of the year. I
just I think, you know, wait until the end of
the year. It makes more sun Give him a medal
and they'll be happy or more booze uh. He's stand Buyer.
I'm Jonas knocks in for Doug Gottlieb. Here Fox Sports Radio.
You can also listen on the I Heart Radio app,

(11:43):

same car you're looking for, new or used. Visit True

can get Dan on Twitter. By the way, Dan Buyer
on Fox eight seven seven six three six nine is

(12:04):
the phone number but up next, it's one of the
most popular events all year in sports. Our guest is
going to tell you how it may look much different
next year. Find out what we mean next here on
Fox Sports Radio. It's the Dug Gottlip Show on Fox
Sports Radio. He's Jonas Knocks. I'm Dan Buyer, glad that
you're hanging out. It is not technically officially the middle

(12:28):
of summer, but we feel it's that way. During the
All Star break, fresh off the heels of the Midsummer Classic,
and I used that very leniently, Jonas, very lenient way
of classic mel Anton and of the of serious x M,
massive TV baseball analyst joins us, Hey, Mel, how happy
Midsummer Classic and vacation time. How you doing? You're doing

(12:48):
well on the most boring sports day of the year.
I thought it was the last night, Mel. I gotta
be honest, it was why can't they bring back home
field advantage and put some games? Put some life into
the worst day at the year for gamblers. Me, don't
forget that those are important people. You're a baseball guy,
and I know that baseball guys love baseball, but I
saw a lot of baseball guys saying last night that

(13:11):
it was a tough watch. What were your that What
were your thoughts on the All Star Game, how it
was presented, what we got. Sure it was a close game,
but overall, how did your view last night's game? Boy?
It was really boring. Lots of strikeouts and you never
know what to expect from a baseball standpoint. I thought
it was a snapshot of the season. A lot of
home runs, a lot of strikeouts, you know that type

(13:33):
of stuff. Not a lot of action. But uh, from
a baseball standpoint, was a little boring. From an entertainment standpoint.
With the new broadcast technique interviewing Nelson Cruz and the
Hall of Fame ceremony first pitched ceremony before the game, Boy,
that was that was really something that that they pulled

(13:53):
that off very well with Rod Cruel and one Marischell
and all those guys. Uh So, Mel, I'm gonna put
you in charte major League Baseball, all right, So because
I because we thought that Fox did as as as
good a job as it could possibly do, trying to
trying to incorporate, you know, in game stuff, you know
some you know the things that you just mentioned, if
you could do one thing to improve the All Star

(14:16):
Game next year? What do you do? I make the
starters the starters throw three innings. I think it's a
little bit unfair when a starter like Max Scherz or
Christie can come out for just one or two innings
and just throw the throw the daylights out of the
ball and go from there. I think the game has
gotten to the point where managers are too worried about

(14:37):
getting everybody in as opposed to just playing a game.
It would have been fun to see Max shars to
go all the way through the National League lineup at
least once and then maybe even twice. But you know
those days are long gone, and it's more about getting
everybody in. It's more about marketing and all that. But
that's what I would do. I'd make the starters pitch
at least three innings. Mel Anson and joining us here

(14:59):
on fox Board Radio, He's Jonas Knocks. I'm Dan Buyer
in for Doug Gottlieb. What about there was always talking
about moving it to Wednesday to allow guys who pitched
on Sunday. Would that solve anything? Mel? If we did
see Clayton Krusha all last night, or if we did
see Corey Klueber, No, I think if no, I don't
think so. I mean, I understand why those guys don't

(15:19):
why they can't pitch it and you all start a
game if they pitch on Sunday, But there would always
be something else. You can't get everybody in on the
roster that you want to. Yes, it would have been
fun to see Klilberg and Kershaw, but if you move
the All Star Game to Wednesday, that means so probably
played games on Monday, and I'll be the same issue. No,
I was saying that, Uh, for me personally, I don't
know why we we reward half and I know this

(15:41):
is something that will never take place, but why not
have it at the end of the season. And I
say that understanding that it'll never happen, and it will
there will be no possibility of that ever, you know,
taking place. But for these guys, if it's at the
midway point of the year, do you think if you
were to pull ten Major League Baseball players aside and say, hey,
would you rather to the All Star Game or would
you rather just get a week off right now? What

(16:04):
would they prefer? Oh, that's a great question. I think
if you've been around a while. I think he's been
the nine or ten All Star Games, or five or
six or whatever. If you've been to a few, you
probably wouldn't mind having the week off. But if you're
a young kid like Hearon Judge or Miguel Sino, uh,
it's just the opposite. But I think overall, I think, yeah,

(16:25):
there are a few players that would like a little
time off whatever. But I think for the most part,
if you did a scientific poll, a poll that was legitimate,
you'd find that players want to go to the All
Star Game. And if you played at the end of
the season, you have to wait till the end of
the World Series, and then you'd have everybody out of shape.
This is really the only time to play it. Mel
Anton in a serious x MMOV insider with this yere

(16:47):
on Fox Sports Radio Damn Buyer Jonas Knox in for
Doug Gottlieb. All right, mel what are what is Monday
night for these players like at the All Star location,
specifically South Beach? Uh? How later these guys going. How
many of those guys last night we're still feeling the
effects of South Beach before that game. Well, that's a
good question, and you know, there's a lot of parties,

(17:09):
a lot of things to see, a lot of things
to do. But I think the number one piece of
advice managers give to their players to before they go
is be careful and get some rest. And the fact
that Jeff could fly on either Sunday night or Monday morning, um,
you know, makes it a little tough. I think they
can be reasonable. I think you can have a fun
time and party and still get plenty of sleep. But

(17:30):
but it's always a challenge, and I'm sure it's always
a temptation of question about it. Mel Anton and joining
us here on Fox Sports Radio talking about the All
Star Break, is major League Baseball? They hit on something
with the home run derby on Monday Night. Ratings were
some of the best that ESPN saw in twenty years.
Do you see major League Baseball stepping in and trying
to make sure that Aaron Judge and gian Carlos Stanton

(17:53):
and those guys participate maybe year after year or are
they gonna maybe face a problem Not to narrow your answer,
but I mean could just be something where maybe Aaron
Judge doesn't want to compete. How is Baseball gonna handle it?
Because they did at least strike gold on Monday, and
it seemed with the Derby. I think there's always players
that want to be in in the home run Derby.
There might be a couple of I mean Bryce Harper

(18:13):
took this year off, he didn't want to be in it,
but he wants to be in it next year. I
think he had all those young stars, but you didn't
have Mike Trout, Fryce Harper. There's plenty of players to
do it. I mean, you only have to find eight
and uh yeah, there might be some years where Aaron
Judge is I don't want to do it, but I
don't think that's gonna happen in a while. I don't
think there's gonna be an issue, particularly when you saw
the excitement, the excitement unfold on Monday night. It really

(18:37):
is something. The way you have those time sessions that
was brilliant. Uh you know, the speeded along, pick up
the pace a little bit, you had some excitement, some
clock watching. It was really good. But I don't think
there's ever gonna be a problem. There might be a
year where a big star says I don't want to participate,
but there'll always be plenty of young hitters to go in.
You know, I thought it was interesting on Monday when

(18:58):
uh Stanton ends up losing and not advancing. It loses
to to Gary Sanchez. We had heard for so many
years that like eat Yer, oh would be Barry Bonds
has said that each year O would win a home
run derby. I would love to see seven Bombers and
whoever the number one seed is just to get the
guy who you know, like bringing a scooter Jeannette, you know,

(19:19):
why not after his home run? Like I think those
are the sort of things as well that would be
intriguing to have sort of a David and Goliath. I mean,
the home run derby was great as it is, but
I even think that there's more that they can do
to to have fun with it. Jonas and I were
talking earlier. I even suggested, I know teams wouldn't go
for this. They have pictures to see you all this
Chapman to see where he could clock, you know, a
hundred and five miles per hour. I think all of

(19:41):
those things are baseball's benefits. So when instead of looking
at the game to get better, maybe even try to
improve you even more so on Monday, could that be
the route baseball goes to. Yeah, I think I think
they've made big improvements because a few years ago the
home run derby was as boring as you can get.
Everybody was asking when is this ever gonna end? One
is just ever gonna end? They've made huge improvements now.

(20:03):
I think what you're saying, having a Scooter Janet or
Nitro Suzuki there, if it's the right David and Goliath
type player, I think it could work. But boy, it's
pretty hard to top what happened Monday night. But I
think your idea is intriguing because what would happen if
Scooter Jeannette came to Miami and got on a roll.
I don't know. It could be exciting, it could be

(20:23):
really exciting. Or my my feeling is it might be
a little bit too gimmicky because it was pretty hard
to beat what happened Monday night. Um, the last one
for me before before we let you go here. So
second half of the season, what's the biggest name on
the trade block? And if you had to put money down,
who gets dealt? Oh, that's a great question. I think

(20:45):
I think Garrett Cole is going to be one of
the no I'll say you know, I'll say Garret Cole
has got a good chance to be traded. There's teams
that needs that need pitching. Um, the Pirates need prospects,
and I think Derek Cole at Pittsburgh Pirates has got
a good chance to go. Uh that that would be
number one. Number two would be Justin Berlander that Detroit Tigers,
and three would be over in Santana. But Garret Cole

(21:07):
might be the biggest name. He's got, he's cheap, he's good,
he's proven, and teams that are in the race have
prospects to make a deal. So I think Pittsburgh could
really look good um and make a deal. I think
they're gonna be all right. They're sitting all right. These
our friends where that. You can find him on Twitter
at mel Anton and of course baseball analysts for sirius

(21:28):
XM and Massive TV. Mel thanks so much. Enjoy these
couple of days off and uh get back at it Friday.
All right, Thanks guys. Great, great to talk to Mountain
busy guy baseball now with kind of the the free
agency of NBA, winding down baseball in the in the
forefront and uh Mel shetting some good light on on
what we what we had and what we missed last night,

(21:50):
and don't be such a stranger, mel jeez, come around.
He was a busy guy on Fox Sports Radio. Mel
Is mell is available. I love his insights and uh,
it's it's great to talk to him. He's I talked
h Mel on Sunday. I'd talked to him more than
my wife. I think, yeah, I love that was awesome.

(22:12):
But I'm just waiting for the text from Cindy Cats
are our associate producer who will be probably bothered by that.
So um but but nonetheless, he is Dan Buyer. I
am Jonas Knox. This is Fox Sports Radio. We are
in for Doug Gottlieber. You can also listen to the
show all throughout on the I Heart Radio app and
on Sirius XM channel eighty three. You can get me
on Twitter at the Jonas Knox up next though, one

(22:36):
of the all time greats is feuding with his former organization.
It's an NFL story, that's right. The NFL is back
sixties seconds from now. First, though, let's find out it's trending.
He's Jonas Knox, I'm Dan Buyer, not a b k R.
Isues today because there is no are John Romill sitting out?
So Sam kinseley a k a Iowa Sam as you

(22:56):
call him on on the weekend overnights and he's the
pastor Sam thirty on Twitter in for John. Eric Roberts
our executive producer today in for Ryan Music. But we
are having fun. Thanks to mel Antonin for joining us
here on Fox Sports Radio. You can also hear mel
on Sirius x Amma on Masson TV and also on
this same show. Is he comes up in forty minutes again? No,

(23:18):
I'm just kidding. Just mel is a busy guy with
us here at Fox Sports Radio, just having some fun.
You know, he's having some fun in Italy. Calvin Johnson Okay,
the retired NFL wide receiver Calvin Johnson is in Italy
because of the Italian Bowl. Okay, okay, just now, Eric
and Sam I want to bring you guys in on this.

(23:41):
If if you had to guess, okay, just off the
top of your head, what version of the Italian Bowl
it is? Like? Is this the first Italian Bowl? Is
this Italian Bowl too? What would you guys guess? Uh?
What Italian Bowl? Do you think this is? Go? Ahead, Eric,
I'm gonna go fi okay, Italian Bowl five. Yeah, Sam,

(24:02):
I want to say this a little trick question. I'm
gonna say this is like Italian Bowl seven. It's just
it isn't because Sam's from Iowa. So the closest he's
been to Italy as Domino. That's right, that's right, Italian
Bowl seven. Yes, Sam knows about that. I've had about

(24:24):
thirty seven bowls at Italian Bowl Insider. Who do you like?
Could you like? Do you like Rome in this one?
Never mind? Who cares? Calvin Johnson is going to be
a presenter for the football championship game of the Italian
Bowl thirty seven, So he's doing some media in doing
something I think I said media, media talking, doing a

(24:45):
lot of stuff matter news conference in Italy, Okay. And
his situation with the Detroit Lions apparently is still being
talked about. On why he retired with Detroit, we had
heard a lot of different theories. We do that there
was some questions about the signing bonus this for Calvin
Johnson on why he retired from the NFL and said
goodbye to the Detroit Lions. I actually went out to

(25:07):
work with the Raiders not long ago, and I got
to see Marshawn. We actually came into the league together,
you know. So he's in a great situation. Just if
I was to keep playing out to play in Detroit,
he just wasn't for me. If it's anymore. That's everybody's
goal when it comes to the league is to win
a Super Bowl. You know that as the ultimate goal,
and I mean no more. I wanted to win it,
and Arcas I just didn't see that OFFICI. So he

(25:28):
didn't see the opportunity in Detroit. And the question was
about Marshall Lynch retiring and coming back to the Raiders,
and didn't see that opportunity and opportunity in Detroit. So
Calvin Johnson decided to retire. Man, this is not the
first time that he's had some public comments not happy
with his departure from Detroit. There was the issue with
having to give back the signing bonus when he wanted

(25:49):
to work out as his contractual um situation. I think
it was we were talking about this before the show
to where it was three hundred thousand dollars he had
to initially get back, but it got bumped. It was
first reported as three because it was ten of the
signing yes, and he got a three point two million
dollar bonus. Now what we heard was that he actually
gave back more of about a million, but on the

(26:11):
flip side of that, he kept two point two million
dollars of that signing bonus. So it's just here's here's
my and and I've talked about this before. The Lions
are the same organization who also went after Barry Sanders
after he walked away to get their money back and
to the point to where he had to make payments,

(26:32):
you know, like monthly installments. It's like if you get
out of your if you sign a year lease and
you get out of your lease, you've got to like
you can't afford it. And for those you have to
have been in that situation, me and Charleston, South Carolina,
and you can't afford to pay the remainder of the
lease off because you lost your job because the station
closed down. Um, and you gotta sell your couches so
you can get back into U haul. If if if

(26:53):
you were in that situation, you have to work out
a payment plan. And Barry Sanders one of the all
time grades in the history of that organism nation who
was all that organization had for years, and to develop
a payment plan to give them their money back, and
then they turn around they do the same thing to
Calvin Johnson. It's like, I get that, it's part of
the contractual agreement. I get it, But doesn't it look

(27:16):
sort of petty from an organ from an organizational standpoint
that you've got this guy who has been so good
for your organization, never been in trouble, played his ass off,
was all you had for so long, and you're sweating
him over what a couple hundred thousand dollars. Listen, he
signed a contract. That's the biggest thing. I actually side
with the Lions on this. I think that Calvin Johnson

(27:38):
is completely in the wrong. If you couldn't see that
the Lions weren't going anywhere for a while, then why
are you signing new contracts with them when they gave
him a hundred and thirty two million dollar deal to
make him the highest paid receiver in the NFL. He
wasn't complaining at that time. I just I don't know
why we are we are all of a sudden hearing
all of this. Calvin Johnson was banged up. Wouldn't this

(28:00):
during his later years in Detroit always had Wednesday, Thursday,
and Friday off. The Lions did as much to get
him ready to play. The fact this is that the
Lions actually made the playoffs last year without Calvin Johnson.
I think this just sounds like a lot of sour grapes.
And I actually sided with the Lions on this, and
that's why I brought up the signing bonus part of it.
It wasn't like, hey, you're gonna pay us back all

(28:20):
of it. He's still got two point two million dollars
on a deal that he had to give back a
million when heck years back he signed the hundred and
thirty two million dollar deal. It was I know, it's
a big deal, a million, three twenty, but but the
fact is he still got two million of that signing
bonus and still Harbor's resentment over the Lions because he
didn't feel like they could win there, well, they were

(28:41):
better without him. It sounds like sour grapes to me.
But I will say this though, Dan, and I just
want to give you the heads up if I ever
go to that liquor store up the road from here
at Fox Sports Radio and uh, you know the liquor
store where the prices changed all the time, just depending
on whose work and Um, and if I go there
and I buy you like one of those small pringles
contain inners, sour cream and onion, and I bring it

(29:02):
back to you, I don't expect you to pay me back.
I'm just doing that out of the goodness to my heart.
So I am not the Detroit Lions, and I want
to haggle you for that in demand that you give
me back part of the pringles. If you didn't if
you didn't see through the end of the show, if
you didn't work the entire three hours with me, I
wouldn't ask for part of the pringles back. I can
just assure you that, well, thank you. I appreciate that

(29:23):
you wouldn't throw me under the bus like Kelvin Johnson
is doing now. I will say this, it is not
just me that is defending Calvin Johnson. One of the
all time great in Lions history, has also backed up
Calvin Johnson with some comments, Um, dan or are you
familiar with the great quarterback play of one dan Orlovski.

(29:44):
Dan Arlovski has spoken and he's in support of a
Calvin Johnson says he was a great teammate, as classy
as it gets. And uh and Dan Orlovski is also
supporting Calvin Johnson. Oh he's also weighed in. Okay, all
right back, Yeah, good to hear from Dan Arlovsky, who
is the only man in NFL history to think that
the end zones were twelve yards and not ten of

(30:06):
the safety Yeah, listen, Calvin Johnson signed his deal, okay
with Detroit. And if you didn't want, if you weren't
sure about the future of the Lions or what could
be happening in their future, then don't sign that deal.
Don't sign that long of a contract. He got like
sixty million dollars up front on the deal anyway, So

(30:26):
when you're signing a hundred and thirty two million dollar contract,
I mean when you sign it, you sign it. And
so he had to understand it wasn't like the Lions
had a great track record record previously okay as well
when he was there, of great success. So what did
he expect for the Lions to do to mortgage their
future and build a huge winter while they went in?

(30:47):
Ron and Matthew Stafford And guess what. Matthew Stafford had
arguably his best year without Calvin Johnson. This is this
is just it's we didn't hear a lot from Calvin
Johnson when he was in the Least Bazaar. I will
say that all of a sudden, now he's got this
big ripe against him, Like, man, couldn't you have like
spoken out about this so we would have had something
to talk about. And actually you have something interesting in
regards to the Lions during your career to talk about

(31:09):
instead of them going on in sixteen. I mean, help
us out, man, in any situation, whether it be chips
as you said, of buying chips or going out and
doing work. If somebody gives you money to do something
and gives you a bonus because of what you did
and then they don't fulfill that, yeah, if you don't
give a portion of that back or you just keep

(31:30):
the money for yourself, it seems a little odd to me.
So why Calvin Johnson would think that he's entitled to
the bonus and then now wants to to throw the
Lions under the bus and saying that they didn't put
a winner around him. They won this past season without him,
maybe not to the levels and maybe the Detroit snuck
into the playoffs. But the fact is that they got
into the playoffs, and there were some that felt that
Matthew Stafford was an m VP candidate for about half

(31:52):
the year, and Matthew Stafford's on the verge of becoming
the highest paid quarterback in the National Football League and
maybe the highest baid player in the NFL without Calvin
john Do you hear I saw somewhere Calvin Johnson's finger
is shrinking? Did you see that? Because he had the
nerve damage on his finger that was one of the
bad injuries, and they said that his finger is shrinking,
like he's not able to gain back full strength on
his finger. So we're talking about one of the great

(32:13):
receivers in our generation and the guy is going to
have a big toe on his hand in about two months.
Like what the hell is that they told him that
they wouldn't they wouldn't release I wonder what kind of
gloves you'd have to have a JPP collection, Like Calvin
count to ten for me if you when when Calvin

(32:34):
Johnson said in that interview, which you didn't hear there,
he said that they would not release him, Yeah, because
you know why, because you would have counted x amount
against their salary cap. Okay, so it ended up like
where did he want to go? He wants to form
a big three with Kevin Durant and Steph Curry. Go
right ahead, all right, there it is uh Dann Buyer
Jonah sknocks in for Doug Gottlievier Fox Sports Radio. By

(32:56):
the way, I want to let you know that we

we received a text message from our boss, Scott Shapiro,
who said, if we want, mel Antony is available for
the next segment, Kelvin a quick bit of ball on

(33:17):
Kelvin Johnson. He said the definition of insanity would be
continuing to play for the Lions, who never compete for
a Super Bowl, so banging has head weekend and week out,
and even though they wouldn't be competing, that's why he retired.
That's insanity there. Melanton will tell you what he thinks
that about forty minutes alright, So Lions Nation, rise up.
You can get Dan on Twitter at Dan Buyer on Fox.

(33:38):
That is at Dan Buyer on Fox. Up next, though
we do have important information. It's very inappropriate, but you
need to hear it. Find out what it is next

Ramos today. Doug still in Israel hanging out winning basketball
games for t USA, and we're winning because we're having

(34:02):
a good time here on sports Radio, no doubt about it.
And even though there's no John Ramos, we still have
a lot of fun with Sam Kinsley or technical producer.
Eric Roberts from Liking for Ryan Music is our executive
and Melian and then Aaron Torres comes in in about
an hour or so, and then after that more Melanton
in here on sports Radio. You know what I want
more of? I want more of Steve to say, Yeah,

(34:24):
so let's let's bring in see Steve as we dive
into Gottlieb sack today, let's reach into Godlys Sack. I'm
glad that Doug can trust you with this sack of goodies. Steve.
We'll see what kind of game we're playing, gents. This afternoon,
Sam on the board, can we reach in what exactly

(34:46):
guessing game today? You, sab As? It relates to today's
news and guys. Of course, this is not an accident.
During All Star Break, Forbes comes out with its list
this morning, the World's fifty Most Valuable Sports Team List
Week Baby Love List, Week of the Top fifty. And

(35:08):
this is just out today for sen Guess the number
of NFL teams in Forbes Top fifty. Okay, well, I
I know for sure, Jonas, the Cowboys have to be
in there. Okay, that's a given. Okay, that's one. How
long is this gonna No? No, I just we're you know,
we're just the Patriots have got to be in there

(35:30):
as well. Yeah. Long, it's going to go Houston Oilers,
they are Patriots. Um, I am going to see, you
know what, I'm going how many NFL teams in the
Forbes Top fifty. I'm going to say nine. Nope, not close.

(35:52):
It's twenty nine NFL teams out of the top fifty.
Franchise I said twenty nine. What's wrongly, as a matter
of fact, if your franchise is not worth at least
one point seven five billion dollars you don't even make
the list anymore, which means there are another thirty six
sports franchises around the world that are worth at least

(36:15):
a billion that did not make the top fifty men?
And how many do you think I thought he was
gonna be doing this segment? Actually, can you name one
of the three NFL teams that did not make the
cut for Forbes Top fifty? How about the Los Angeles
Chargers and no one, that's a nope, it's the Bengals,

(36:37):
the Detroit Lions and the Buffalo Bill Detroit. You cheap asses,
start stop haggling your legends over their signing bonuses. Do
the Raiders make it they had to use all the
Nevada's money? Yeah, it's that TV money. In the NFL.
There are only eight MLB clubs, seven from the NBA,
seven from European soccer in the top Are you saying

(36:59):
that a pay too many bills? That's a real pun there.
Stadium something might have to do with this. How many
NHL teams made the Top fifty Forbes list. Let's go
to mel Antonin for the answer. Um, let's let's say zero. Okay,

(37:22):
U NHL team I'm gonna say there's more w NBA
teams on this list in NHL teams. Okay, I'm gonna
say none. No NHL on the list, No NASCAR teams,
No Formula one teams either Formula one God Okay, so,

(37:46):
by the way, Formula one is major League go kart
racing at this point. Yes, guess who is number one
on Forbes Most valuable franchise in the Barcelona I'm gonna
go Real, I'm gonna go Manchester United. No, it's the
Dallas Cowboys for the second year. The New York Yankis.

(38:07):
That's crazy. The New York Yankees at number two. It
used to be Real Madrid for three straight years. The
Cowboys overtook him. Last year. It's Cowboys Yankees one to
then Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Final question, what
franchise doubled in value in the last year. It is
now in the top twenty in the world. Oh, it's

(38:29):
got to be a team that moved. It's got to
be the Rams. I'm gonna say the Cubs. One of you.
It was the l A Rams St. Louis literally a
hundred percent more in value, while teams like the Lakers
and the Dodgers went up about ten percent in value,
rams worth nearly three billion dollars. Teams that are worth

(38:54):
three bill are in the top ten of all franchises
in the world. How could they leave St? Louis? Could
they do it? Are you kidding me? You mean mel
anton In your thought? Anyway? Will be back in an
hour and a half with more on US soccer And
it's odd that was Scott leave Sack. He is Dan Buyer.

(39:19):
I'm Jonas Knox in for Doug Gottlieb. Mel Antonin might
be joining us next year on FSR a B k
M edition of The Doug gott Leave Show. Buyer Knox
and mel uh No Johnny Ramos today, but you've got
Sam Kinsley technical producer, Eric Robertson for Ryan Music is
our executive producer, and Steve di Seger also hanging with

(39:41):
us this afternoon. The All Star break is it's really
the All Star break, Jonas, because the break continues. The
All Star game was last night home run Derby on Monday,
but the break will continue on until Friday when games
actually resumed. Now you've got a couple of days to
sit back and relax and uh just kick up the
feet and really not worry about anything in the world
of sports except maybe a summer league tournament. Hell yeah, man,

(40:04):
that's what the degenerate gamblers are doing. Either that or
you're going into the summer league lines. Oh yeah, I
had no idea. Yeah, I mean, I mean, that's what
I hear. I mean, I hear. There's even some live
bets from a couple of friends of mine who've told
me all the games are just like the Marquee games.
I believe all the games. I'm almost positive all the

(40:27):
games have have betting on And again, this is all
here saying, Okay, I've heard some stuff that there's you
know that it is out there, But I mean as
opposed to and I know we're gonna get to this
later on, as opposed to what the alternatives are tonight
on television and sports. Good God, give me the summer league.
Oh I can Oh man, I can't wait. Some league

(40:48):
makes me feel fun. Oh you know that song, Summer Breeze.
Get that one, Sammy, You lock it up if you
just sing it as summer league. That's that. That's how
I get through some of the But a big tournament
to wrap things up in Las Vegas. That really puts
an end to the NBA, who will then take a
three week break and get back at it. And about
as training camp start, October is when the season will

(41:11):
begin in the NBA. Yeah and so, and I saw
a stat that it's the earliest that the NBA has
started that season in in a long time. And that's
because they are trying to get away from the back
to backs. They've lessened the preseason and if you extend
the calendar even more um as they did, they did
it on the front end instead of doing it on

(41:32):
the back end, where you could extend the finals into
late June. They still want the finals to end it
around mid June. So the only way to do it
is to yes moving into October earlier. On October, dear
m b A, why don't you just start the season
on Christmas? I mean, come on, man, the first two
months of the NBA season, nobody gives a crap. It's
in the middle of football, like, nobody cares, nobody, nobody came. Yeah.

(41:55):
The problem is, though, is I just think it's advertising
in TV, so once you get out, once you get
into the summer, it's just not as beneficial for them
TV wise and money wise. That's the only reason that
I can think of, and that their ratings wouldn't be
as high if they wanted to extend it into June
into July, and heck, take it up to August one,
or however you want to do it. I just don't

(42:16):
think it would be I just don't think that numbers there.
Oh no, listen, it doesn't make any sense whatsoever, and
they'd lose money doing it. But this is purely for
selfish reasons, because I'm looking for stuff to talk about
during the summer, and I got news for you. Uh.
You know, Calvin Johnson's feud with the Lions doesn't really
carry for four hours on the weekend over, although he

(42:36):
is being kind of a whiny baby about it. I mean, listen,
I could change my take completely by the time Friday
Night gets here, all right, I'm willing to do that, Okay,
There there's nothing wrong with with going in reverse. Last
night's All Star game at great festivities beforehand near the
end of the game, there there were very few fireworks.
There was one on the top of the tenth inning

(42:57):
from one Robinson Canoe, who had a solo home run
for the American League, and because of that just ended
up winning the m v p UM. Then the questions, right,
how do you fix the All Star Game? How do
you try to make things better than they were last night?
Last year's All Star Game on Fox was the lowest
rated All Star game ever. I'm curious to see what
last nights. There were a lot of empty seats in
Miami as well, and not just at the end of

(43:18):
the game. I saw a follol ball in the second
inning and you saw rows of blue seats. It just
sounds like a sporting him at Miami. Yeah, yeah, like
what else would you expect the parade? Did you see
the pictures of the All Star red carpet parade that
they had. Yeah, it's a tough spot to be in
certain cities, like really embrace it and really bring it out.
Miami was like, ah, well, we'll pass on it. We'll

(43:41):
do it the next time the All Star Game comes around.
But those were just some of the issues that the
All Star Game. I think that Miami's a nice spot
for the players to go. They'd love to go, but
as you said, fan wise, it just doesn't it doesn't
draw the appeal. You're gonna see a much different story
next year. When it's in d C, especially with Bryce
Harper in the in the home run derby, that is
going to be electric. I think you're gonna have a

(44:02):
much better atmosphere. Yeah, and um, I also listen for
the players. They go there, they tear it up, they
party a little bit. Um. The home run derby was
really really fun. But I do really think that not
having home field advantage matter did take a little of
the spice out of it. And it shouldn't matter, and

(44:23):
I was saying that it should not matter whatsover, but
it did take a spice, a little spice out of it.
And we were talking about it. Fox did everything they
possibly could. I mean, they had Alex Rodriguez on the
infield at one point, they were talking to players while
they were in the outfield at another time. So they
tried to spice it up as much as they could.
But unfortunately, as you mentioned earlier in the show, it
is what it is. I can't wait until next year

(44:44):
when Ken Rosenthal runs the bases with a runner. Oh yeah,
that would be great. That would That's how you can
really spice it up. They'll do that in the Nation's Capital. Um.
Speaking of spicing it up, the All Star Game, UM
probably needed at the Home Run Derby not as much.
I don't know if you know this, Jonas, but early
on the show, we spoke with mel Anton in a
serious XM and Massive TV. Where have I heard that
name covering major League Baseball? We asked him if major

(45:05):
League Baseball is going to to try to push and
continue these stars to be in the Home Run Derby
because of the great success they at least had Monday Night.
I think there's always players that want to be in
in the Home Run Derby. There might be a couple
of I mean Bryce Harper took this year off, he
didn't want to be in it, but he wants to
be in it next year. I think he had all
those young stars, but you didn't have Mike Trout, Fryce Harper.
There's plenty of players to do it. I mean, you

(45:27):
only have to find eight and uh yeah, there might
be some years HL Aaron Judges, I don't want to
do it, but I don't think that's gonna happen in
a while. I don't think there's gonna be an issue,
particularly when you saw the excitement, the excitement unfold on
Monday Night. It really is something the way you have
those time sessions. That was brilliant. Uh, you know, to
speed it along, pick up the paste a little bit,

(45:48):
you had some excitement, some clock watching. It was really good.
But I don't think there's ever gonna be a problem.
There might be a year where a big star says,
I don't want to participate, but there'll always be plenty
of young hitters to go. That would be a best
case scenario for Major League Baseball because it's a problem
that the NBA has. Doug even talked about it on
the show yesterday of getting the stars to compete in
like the All Star Saturday Night. Sure, you get in

(46:09):
the in the three point shoot out, you'll see a
Clay Thompson and Steph Curry has participated in the past.
But if you can get Aaron Judge and John Carlos
Stanton and Bryce Harper in every year, or at least
maybe every other year for some of them, you're going
to have a very very good product that people are
gonna want to see. Yeah, and I think that I
know that baseball it's all about all you want to
promote these young players. You want to get him on

(46:31):
this on this big stage, and all that I just
I wonder if people how many people really took that
game serious last night. I know that it was an
exhibition game and I got all that, but how many
people made that a point to where I got to
tune in to watch the All Star Game. I don't
think many, and I don't think that. I don't even
think that the players and even in previous years, care

(46:51):
as much. At the end of the game, managers may
manage to win the game, but but realistically it's an exhibition.
And the reason I go back to I'm not even
sure how how much people care is because when the
All Star Game was in Minnesota, one of the great
moments was when Glenn Perkins and Kurt Suzuki were the
finishing battery in front of the home crowd, and the

(47:13):
Twins fans loved it because it was their guys. There
was no way that Twins were going to the World Series,
but that at least brought excitement, that brought something to see,
and that got the fans in it. Even with home
field advantage on the line during that time, I don't
think that it was it was a matter of man
of the al can really close this down. They're going
to get home field advantage. I even think that. I

(47:33):
think it was just only the way that the the
managers managed the game made a difference. I the guys
who were out by the fourth inning. I don't think
Carrie I came up with an idea though, how to
make the home run dere be more interesting? Daan Right, Okay,
I'm giving up on the All Star Game. Even if
even though it was it was a great event on Monday,

(47:53):
you still see some room for improvement. Here's what you do.
You set up some things. Know how you watch a
like a wrestling event, and every time there's a table
on the outside, you know somebody's going through the table.
So it's like, oh man, who when is this going
to be used? When is this prop going to be
used in the w w E. Here's what you do

(48:15):
at the home run derby. Just randomly, you put up
objects that are easily exploded when made contact with by
baseballs in the outfield that have never been there before.
But you sell it as we've installed new lights into
the stadium just to make sure that the lighting is
proper for some of these players, knowing that it's purely

(48:38):
a prop. It's a table and professional wrestling and The
idea is you want somebody's baseball to go through those lights.
It makes it a bigger spectacle. Put props out there.
Let's turn it into miniature golf. You want to have
a wind meal and a clown's mouth, have that as
well too. You may as well. Let's let's add some
props in, some exploding devices, and let's make this thing

(48:59):
a fun carnival type at What about this is Aaron
Judge just thinks he won the home run derby. All
of a sudden, high road goes off and Bryce Harper
walks out from the center field wall ends up saying like, oh,
it's not until you get this belt, So I'm into it.
Entrance music, you name it or uh. Aaron Judge thinks
that he's hit the final home run to win it all,

(49:22):
and a wall drops and it knocks down the baseball
and it turns out no, no, no, that wasn't a
home run. Like let's turn this in, like, let's let's
make this I'm serious, like have exploding lights, like you know,
you know, move some stuff in. They doctor the baseballs
for these for these home run derby's. They've talked about
how they use different balls for the home run Derby

(49:43):
and Fenway when Mark McGuire was was launching balls to
Maine and everyone, Oh my god, this is so impressive,
and Chris Berman was running out of cities nearby to
say where the ball ended. And they admitted afterwards that
they that the baseballs were they did something different to
the balls to where they would, you know, go farther
than a normal baseball would. So we're gonna do that.

(50:03):
I mean, we're like set up props, set up exploding tables, lights,
you name it, all around the stadium. I think it
would be better. I thought Fox was gonna bring out
LaVar ball in the eighth inning to make it a
little bit more interesting. And I was talking about pulling
out all the stops. You know, why not how about this?
How about one of the balls that the guy hits,

(50:26):
like like every ten baseballs that the guy hits is like, um,
is like a it explodes, but it's not like a
like an explosive device. But the ball will explode and
and it will shoot powder up into your face. So
that that way, when the ball doesn't go out of
the park, and one of those kids wants to show
off in the outfield, like look at this snow cone

(50:47):
grab all of a sudden explodes in his face, and
and the kid looks like Ron Washington on a three
week bender, you know what I mean? Like, let's say,
let's let's let's everybody's accountable in this whole thing. Wait,
was that my Knox sound effect the explosion, because that
was the one I made for you. But it seems
like it was cut off, Like it just ends there,
I added, knocks Um Steven Seger. The TV ratings are

(51:10):
in for last night's Mid Summer Classic, at least the
overnight ratings. While the home run Derby got a five
point five, the All Star Game got a six point five.
Keep in mind last year. Last year, Yeah, last year
was six point four worst ever did not win the night.
Six point nine for NBC's lineup last night. But if
you look at the individual markets, of course, Miami was hosting.

(51:32):
The city of Miami was not even close to the
top ten in All Star Game ratings. Kansas City was
the highest rating Baseball City. So six point five ratings
are so I don't know what that translates to, like
ten million or so viewers. Oh, I thought that was
Michael Floyd's blood alcohol content yeah, can we get can
get the ratings. I'm sorry about that. I didn't known,
idiot oh Man. Thanks you for that information. M mel

(51:57):
Anton and will weigh in in in about twenty minutes.
I'm telling you there are four people who think this
joke is funny, and I don't care. I don't care.
There are there are three people laughing at this joke.
Three of the two of us are in studio and
the other ones on the fourth floor. Love mel Antony.

(52:17):
We just have used them a lot. We've leaved heavily
on mel It's awesome. By the way, he is Dan Buyer.

next though, Up next, though, there are NFL teams that
are trying to do something to help their fan base
in their franchise and they are going to fail miserably.
We'll tell you what that is next on fs ARE.
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show. Here on Fox Sports Radio.

(52:59):
I'm Dan Buyer. That is Jonas Knocks. We are sitting
in for Doug today. Feel free to hit us up
on Twitter. I'm at Dan Buyer, Rod Fox, and you
can get Jonas at the Jonas Knocks No. B k.
Our audition is Johnny Romos is out, as is our
executive producer, Ryan Music. So hey, that's all right. We've
got the tag team of Eric Roberts and Sam Kinsley
sitting in at Steve to Sega also hanging out. Steve

(53:20):
will have the press coming up in a little over
an hour, right after we catch up with mel anton
And of Syrios Xun and Massive TV to talk Major
League Baseball. By the way, I got another idea for
the home run derby. How about every fifth baseball is
wrapped in a hundred dollar bill. Okay, that would be

(53:41):
exciting to see what the fans do. Yes, yes, but
it's but it's got to be a hundred dollar bill
from a stripper, you know, grime on it. You know
what I mean? I truly think if you put ten
million dollars in in a just a big swimming pool, okay,
not with water, but just throw it out the outfield,
the winning team gets it. But the only way you

(54:03):
get it is if you are still in uniform. Okay,
so players wouldn't be allowed to leave, and if you're
on the winning team, you get that money. Imagine how
crazy that could be for ten million dollars and money
seems to be brought up, but heck, if you've got
twenty guys and they're winning a half a mill just
for winning the All Star Game, I think that would

(54:23):
at least draw some interest. I do think, though, man
start throwing some props in there, all right, seriously, Like, like,
what makes the ending of the Natural? What makes that movie?
It's the lights exploding, the baseball hitting the lights and
it explained. I never mind the fact the movie's overrated,
but the lights exploding at the end of it make
that movie. It's one of the iconic scenes and sports movies.

(54:46):
So if that's the case, why wouldn't you set up
something and just say, oh, we're we're tinkering with some things,
you know, we're uh, and no, don't give me the whole. Well,
we don't want to add props. You've got bricks and
ivy still on a wall in Wrigley, and you had
a second pitchers mound in Houston in that stadium during
live play for years. So I don't want to hear

(55:06):
about we don't we don't want props in our stadiums.
And and the flagpole was there as well. Yeah, And
and baseball see only sport where you can doctor your stadium,
which I love, which I go issue with it. You've
got a sandbox at Peco in San Diego. It's amazing.
I love the different ways that you can you know,

(55:26):
you can spice stuff well, and and even with the
fences as well, short fortune lys, because you've got some
you know, right handed hinting power hitters. Absolutely sneak went
around the pole in right field if you got a
left us leading off, Absolutely, that's what I I do
like that aspect of it. And you know, like you mentioned,
are all this chapman see how fast he could actually
throw right before the home runder? But that would kind

(55:48):
of be your appetizer. How fast does are all this
chapman throw right handed? That's what I want to see
all right right, because because I would be willing to
bet he could throw at least eight right hand. Speaking
of throwing, the NFL is going to be on our
minds very very soon, if it's if it isn't already,
now that the All Star Game has come and gone,

(56:09):
the NFL is on the minds of some in the NFL,
including the New York Jets in their fans at least,
and a lot of the poor teams in the NFL
maybe looking ahead to the draft class next spring that
could be one of the best we've ever seen in
the National Football League selection process. One of those that
could possibly enter, and I say possibly as USC quarterback

(56:30):
Sam Donald. It's about a week ago jonas At a
report first popped up that sources close to Donald said
it wasn't a given that he would enter the draft
after this upcoming season at USC, You'll be a redshirt sophomore,
but he would be eligible to enter the draft, that
he may stick around for a couple of seasons in
l A. Now. Donald was making the rounds and joined
the Doug Gottlieb Show yesterday here on Fox Sports Radio.

(56:51):
When Doug was in to talk about the prospects of
teams wanting him to enter the draft because they'd like
to take him first overall, and really Jonas that led
to the talk of tanking in teams, trying to tank
for Sam Donald. This was the USC quarterback yesterday with Doug.
I think the simplest answer that I can come up with,
and it's kind of cliche, but you can only control.

(57:11):
You can control, you know, if I have a bad
year this year, you know, knock on wood, or if
I have a great year, We're just gonna see what
happens from there. You know, I need to be able
to talk to my family, talk to you know, all
of my coaches, and so it's it's definitely gonna be
a process. But right now, I mean, we're just focused
on fall camp and we just got a bunch of
new freshmen, So right now we're just focused on getting
them integrated with our team. Say, I'm also telling others that, yeah,

(57:34):
don't tank for him next year. He also, by the way,
should get straight. The knock on wood is only like
when you have, you know, good things, So you would say, like,
you know, you you kind of said like, hopefully I
don't have a bad year, knock on wood. Well, I
would have a good year, knock out. I wouldn't draft
him for that reason alone, not knowing one of the
most tired cliches used by people knock on wood. What

(57:54):
do you mean? Knock on wood? First of all, and
most of the time people aren't even knocking on wood. Okay,
come on, but never Nevertheless, so this whole tanking thing
is funny to me because let's say so Sam Donald
has a really good year, all right, and and the
Jets are projected to have an awful year. There's some
people that have said the Jets personnel wise, are the
worst NFL team in the last decade, and there's been

(58:18):
some stinking year, I mean, really really bad teams out there.
So if that's the case, how many wins does Sam
Donald give the Jets a year from now? Three? Four? Maximum? Absolutely? Maximum?
So so what and then if you put him in
that situation behind what's probably going to be an average

(58:42):
to below average offensive line and he's got no weapons there,
what's the point? Get him? Get him banged up and
beat up, like like David Carr back in the day
with the Houston Texans. Like I don't I don't understand
the idea of tanking for a quarterback when you're more
than a quarterback away from being good there there is
It's so easy to draw parallels jon us for what

(59:04):
we see in other places and and try to connect
it to the NFL. And you can't do that when
it comes to tanking. You can't form a big three
in the NFL and be fine. Free agency of the
National Football League is different than what you have in
the NBA. As you said, even if you bring in
Sam Donald next year, what is the best possible solution
for the Jets? Are best possible outcome that next year

(59:26):
considering how bad their roster is, You're saying three wins
and I'm saying that's generous. The the way to build
a winner in the NFL is through the front office
and through drafting and through scouting. That's how you do it.
You don't do it in free agency. It's not like
if the Jets land a franchise quarterback, whether it be
Donald or Josh Allen or Josh Rosen. It's not like

(59:48):
the Jets or all of a sudden going to be
a contender if they continue to put garbage around them.
And I know they're going through a rebuilding process, right now.
But if you don't bring in good enough players, they
aren't gonna be any good themselves. Schools. It's apples and
oranges for a cliche. This is the most apples and
oranges that you can get. We're trying to compare the
NBA and the NFL, and I get tanking in the

(01:00:10):
NBA and trying to land a guy where you're not
position specific. What about Okay, So the Browns were absolutely
awful this past year. Were the Browns tanking? Are they
tanking for a pass rusher and Myles Garrett? No? No,
And this this quarterback class is so rare and unique
that you're not going to be able to do this
year after year after year hoping to get the next

(01:00:31):
Joe Montana or the next Tom Brady. That's not going
to happen. And it's I just I hate the comparisons
to it because it is not the same. The Jets
bringing in Sam Donald, as you said, doesn't improve them
immediately right away from a one win team or maybe
a no win team to a seven win team, And
there's no guarantee over the next five years that they
will be any better if there is no sort of

(01:00:54):
talent around them. And it's just a huge misconception. So
when Sam Donald is saying, hey, don't ink for me,
he's actually right, and it's putting pressure on him that
he's unjust because if the team around him isn't somewhat competitive,
there's no way that they have any chance of winning.
And it's a numbers game. In the n b A,
you draft one, you know, superstar player, a guy that

(01:01:15):
changes your franchise. It's a numbers game. Well that's that's
one fifth that you're starting lineup. So that's at all times.
In the NFL, you draft a quarterback. If the other
twenty one starters are all bad, that's what four percent,
four or five percent of your of your starting lineup.
You don't have the same impact as you do in

(01:01:36):
the NBA. It's it's it's a numbers game. That's why
in the n b A, I get the idea of
certain teams tanking. I I understand that. I just I
don't and maybe I'm maybe I'm crazy, Maybe I'm not
as high on on some of these guys, you know,
whether it's Sam Donald or or Josh Allen or whatever.
I just I look at these guys and I go,
how how many wins more does that give you? Like?

(01:01:58):
How how much better are you? Really? And I feel
terrible for Todd Bowles because this is a full blown rebuild.
This is stripped down to the bottom, every veteran gone.
We're gonna build from the floor up. The last team
to do that was the Bears after the Phil Emory experiment.
And the Bears won three games last year and they're
two years in. Would I would say this, I would

(01:02:19):
say this with the NFL and used good examples there.
I would argue though, that in the NFL the three
Wind Bears and the one Wind Browns are closer to
the Super Bowl champion Patriots than what the Brooklyn Nets
are to the Golden State Warriors. And so so in
the NFL, when you have that parody that you do,

(01:02:40):
you can make up ground quicker, I think in the
NFL than you would in the NBA if you don't
make colossal moronic moves in the National Football because it's
just a much more level and even playing field, I
think for for the teams in the NFL, and we
see more turnover in the standings where heck, we're talking
now about the Warriors. Maybe when the next three NBA titles.

(01:03:01):
I think it's I think it's different than the NFL,
where you get more of a chance, you know, to win.
So maybe taking again isn't that big of a deal,
or there's something that you shouldn't do because the ability
to turn things around maybe a little quicker than what
you would get in the NBA. He is Dan Buyer.
I'm Jonas Knocks in for Doug Gottlieb here Fox Sports Radio.
You can always listen on the I Heart Radio app,
as well as on Sirius XM channel eight three. Get

(01:03:24):
Dan on Twitter at Dan Buyer on Fox. But up
next Connor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather. We had a chance
to catch up with each of those individuals. You're going
to hear exclusive commentary from both of them just sixty
seconds from now. Don't go anywhere first, though, Let's find
out what's trending. Doug gotlim show here on Fox Sports Radio.

(01:03:46):
He's Jonas Knocks, I'm Dan Buyer, mel Anton and comes
up in ten. I thought this was mel Anton and
to be honest with you, having some fun. Mel is great.
We just have overworked him the last week here on
Fox Sports Radio. Moving on from baseball, to what happened yesterday.
The Mayweather McGregor World Tour UM had its first stop

(01:04:10):
in Los Angeles, Jonas, and it was quite a spectacle
as we heard from Connor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather on
the same stage for the first time leading up to
their fight in August twenty Yeah. Shout out to a
Fox Sports too for um just not bleeping out a
single thing. No, uh, this, letting it roll, letting it fly.

(01:04:31):
So you got everything that you wanted to or may
not have wanted to hear from those two guys. Is
they're going to be doing this all throughout the week.
I believe the next one in New York starts in
about an hour from now, so they'll you know, ratchet
it up a little bit. But the first one was,
you know, a lot of what you expected, guys, John
back and forth. I'm gonna do this to you, I'm
gonna do that to you. But it was They're a

(01:04:53):
really tough interview to get right now. You know a
lot of people have tried to pull some strings and
tried to catch up with Floyd Mayweather and Connor McGregor
and um, Dan, I I gotta give you credit. You
were able to do it. We've we we were able
to pull some strings that allowed the guys to do
a couple of a couple of different things with us,
not only with myself but with you and also with

(01:05:14):
John Ramos who wasn't here. But what was neat was
I was able to I was able to catch up
with Floyd Mayweather, okay, and I was telling him about
I got married a little over two months ago, and
we were just talking about, you know, what it's like
to be married and stuff like that, this kind of
you know, tell him what was going down on the ceremony.
Floyd Mayweather, you wouldn't believe this, Okay, did an impersonation

(01:05:37):
of my wife? Okay, Yeah, Floyd Mayweather. Okay, Because I
was telling him, like what was going on at the ceremony,
and because you know, they asked for the rings, and um,
like I listen, my first marriage, didn't know what was
going down to Lisa's first marriage. We're all kind of new.
So you know, I get the ring and I don't

(01:05:58):
say anything, but I told him, like what Lisa said, Okay,
because when I gave her the ring, she ended up
saying something. And Floyd Mayweather did an impersonation of my wife.
I don't, So that's what she said when I got married. Yeah,
so that was nice of Floyd Mayweather to actually say that. Again,
what what at Lisa say to me when we got married?
According to Floyd, I don't. So that's what happened at

(01:06:22):
the ceremony. That was That was really the you know,
so we were talking about a lot of different stuff married,
you know, relationships and stuff like that, just a lot
of different stuff we you know, we're talking more than marriage,
just even like dating, you know. And that uh, Connor McGregor.
So you know, Connor and I go way back. Um
and uh and and Connor and I were, you know,
he was kind of giving me a hard time and

(01:06:43):
you know, tell oh, you know, you you're not married
and you're not settled down and you don't really know
what you want or whatever. And I was like, okay, well,
you know, okay, Connor, you you tell me, do an
impression of me, Connor, since you know me so well,
since we go so far back, Connor McGregor, do do
an impression of me? What do I want in the
perfect guy? It's a little legs, his little car, his

(01:07:07):
little heads and you know, what and I got, he's right.
He's right. I want I want somebody whose feet dangle
off a curb when they sit down. That's what I want.
So he's right. He's absolutely spot on. So I I
wanted to get, you know, come back at him, but
I couldn't. He was spot on. You guys, you guys

(01:07:27):
talk to some football I didn't realize he was a
big football fan. That is true. So so check this out.
So Connor McGregor, obviously with them, you know, fighting in Vegas,
he had some thoughts on the Raiders. Is he a
big Raiders fan? I don't know. I thought I thought
that he was. Okay, again, I I thought that he was.

(01:07:47):
But um, apparently Connor McGregor has seen the great Al Davis,
the late great Alan Davis. He's seen him very recently.
Now I don't know how that is, because I don't
know if this is like a you know, Ted Williams
situation where he's in a block of ice somewhere in
the family's fighting over the body or whatnot. But he's
seen the Great Al Davis recently, and Connor McGregor, being

(01:08:09):
the savage he is, as he's staring at Al Davis
had this to say, is in a track suit? And
and and he did, he does, he did like to
wear a tracksuits. Al Davis was wearing a track Yeah,
he did, he did, he did. He did a lot,
He did a lot. I did. Really, Yeah, it's it's amazing.

(01:08:32):
It makes sense though, as you said, the fights in Vegas,
the raisers are coming. You know, nothing more rader than
Al Davis. What was Al Davis wearing a track a
track suit? I mean to me, you should never speak
to speak that way, you know about the deceased. But again,
Connor McGregor does his own thing, and it's a press
conference trying to rile people up, so I'm sure he

(01:08:54):
regrets it now. Well, speaking of the deceased, Um, as
those of you who know, listen to b k R
no that we lost a good one about six months ago,
and that is John Ramos's cat, Kitty Boo. Okay, Kitty
Boo was mauled by the neighbor's dog. Okay. And again
Floyd Floyd knows John Ramos. Okay, they they they have

(01:09:14):
they have a pass. You'll actually hear John Ramos in
Floyd's exchange coming up in a little bit. But um,
what ended up happening was Kitty Boo was mauled by
the neighbor's dog, and Jonas and I were going to um,
I guess uh, you know, share our thoughts and love
and and give our respects to John and Kitty Boo,
the cat that we lost. But we had we had

(01:09:35):
no idea on how to get to where they were
holding the services for Kitty Boo. So John Ramos, who
kind of was on edge, he was an emotional time essentially,
kind of went off on us and Floyd Maybewhether it
was with John at that time because he was telling
us Floyd Mayweather's impersonation of John Ramos telling us how
to get to Kitty booze memorial service. Now, which way
you want to go? Which way you want to go?

(01:09:57):
That's right? So that was John Ramos to us. That
was John Ramos to us as we were trying to
pay respects to his cat and we just didn't know
how to get there. And John got fed up and
ended up yes doing that. Here's why that's insulting to me,
all right, because we want to go pay our respects.
We want to show that we are friends of John,

(01:10:17):
you know, I mean we understand that it was a
tragedy that you know, the neighbor's dog ran into the
yard and then um, you know, bit down so hard
on John's cat that the air left the body, the
bones started crunching. Um, shout out Peter. And then and
then swung his head in the air, you know, like
like like a great white trying to get somebody out

(01:10:38):
of a shark cage. You know, he did that whole thing.
So all we wanted to do is pay our respects,
and that's that's the way. And John treats us like that,
just absolutely. Um, it's just appalla. But if there was
anybody to do it, it was Floyd because they have
a relationship. John's not here today, he's doing more work
on the Mayweather McGregor in New York. Yes because John
actually was at the press conference yesterday and I had

(01:10:59):
this to say to um, Floyd Mayweather, and you wouldn't
believe Floyd's response. This exchange between the one and the
only John Ramos in Floyd Mayweather yesterday, t Foon Chocobar.
I don't know what you said, but thank you. I
don't know what you're saying, but thank you. Like this,

(01:11:22):
that was John Ramos yesterday Weather was Applaus for John Romo.
That's what I'm talking about. That is good, the tough,
tough questions. That was what was the question again from
John Ramos yesterday? Fun chocobar. Okay, that's what it was. Yeah,
of course, yeah, just uh question. He couldn't even get

(01:11:42):
it out mel Anton and comes up in five. Yeah.
So it's just, you know, there's a lot of people who,
you know, use this week to take some time off,
a lot of people who look at you know, in
sports radio and say, oh, you know that this is
probably a good week to get away. But the fact
that John is grinding the way that he is um,
even though he stumbled that question and it's still you know,
on this world tour. He'll be in London, I'm sure

(01:12:03):
later this week. Um is incredible stuff. He does hard
work for us here at Fox Sports Radio. We appreciate it,
especially with a dead cat. Yes, Kitty by Floss. I
believe I thought Davis took it the worst of this segment.
Now it's Kitty Book. Uh, Dan Buyer, Jonas Knox in

(01:12:25):
for Doug Gottlieb here Fox Sports Radio eight seven, seven
ninety nine on Fox is the phone number. You can
also listen to the show on the I Heart radio
app serious x M channel eight three, and you can

Though some very controversial comments were heard earlier on Fox
Sports Radio. Wait till you hear what We've got for you.

(01:12:46):
That's next, Poon Chocobar Fox Sports Radio. It to the
Doug Gottlieb Show. Here on fs ARE He's Jonas Knocks.
I'm Dan buyer in for Doug today. Can always hit
us up on Twitter. I'm at Dan by on Fox
Jonas they can get you at j Want. I'll let
you know that today's show brought to you by True Car.
With True Card, you can find out with other people

(01:13:07):
in your area paid for the same car you're looking
for new or use visit True Car to enjoy a
more confident car buying experience. Just because Doug isn't here
today doesn't mean that we don't have the fund that
Doug has during the week. As right now, we like
to play the game, and now this is an opportunity

(01:13:28):
for us to check on what's happening elsewhere on Fox
Sports Radio and also on Fox Sports One. And it
was on un disputed on Fox Sports One that Skip Bayliss, Shannon,
and Joy we're all talking about the Los Angeles Lakers, okay,
Jonas the recent acquisition of the Lakers, Okay, leading them

(01:13:49):
back to prominence. Contavia's Calldwell, Pops, you know, one year
deal worth eighteen million dollars. Okay, so now you're starting
to take, at least for the season, a new look
Lakers team. Skip Bayless had his thoughts on these new
look Lakers. I can make a case just on paper
that the Lakers are still the worst team in the West,

(01:14:11):
the absolutely loaded West. And yet there's something about this
group because I'm rooting for Alonzo, so this is probably
heart overhead. There's something I like about the new makeup
of the Lakers with Brook Lopez, who can absolutely score
the basketball, Brandon Ingram is an emerging star. I like
Coldwell Pope. I'm not saying he's great, but he's pretty
good as the two of the shooting garden. And then

(01:14:33):
you've got Alonzo orchestrating, igniting the break. I worry about
that they might get off to a slow start, but
I think they will catch fire. They have some depth,
they have some spirit to them that I like so
early gut feeling, I think the Lakers are going to
be the surprised of the NBA next year and wind
up in the eight spot. All right, Well he started

(01:14:54):
off good, Skip Bayless, all right, but he clear because
clearly in the initial part of his cut it clearly
heless since the weekend overnights here at Fox Sports Radio,
because I made this point over the weekend, look at
the Western Conference, find me which teams the Lakers are
better than. Seriously, and I'm looking around and all I
got to show for it is maybe Dallas and maybe Phoenix.

(01:15:20):
Maybe I will go and say this, this is what
stood out to me, to piggyback on what you were
saying when you watch them in the summer league. Okay,
at that time they were only missing Julius Randall and
Jordan Clarks. Okay, so like so there are summer league Yes,
that was a majority of what you were going to

(01:15:42):
get as a Laker team. Okay, So when you're not
beating the Clippers, who will probably only have Bryce Johnson
getting minutes from their summer league team when you aren't
meeting them, that becomes an issue. Okay, I understand that
there is a reason for optimism because there are new faces.
But as you said, when you take those faces and
match them up with the rest of the Western Conference,

(01:16:04):
it doesn't add up. I am have been on record,
you and I were here this this spring, and I said,
with Magic Johnson in the fold, I believe that the
Lakers will be a top three team in the West
in three years. But that doesn't mean next year. This
comes when Paul George comes to Los Angeles and maybe
Lebron James and those other pieces. So as much as

(01:16:24):
as you want to try to make this Lakers course
seem better, this is the same amount of expectations that
I thought that they had two years ago in D'Angelo
Russell came in. You thought that these things were going
to get better. They're no better than that. Can Savias called, well,
Pope's a three and D guy who doesn't shoot the
three that Well, now you're playing them eighteen million dollars
a year. I don't know how, like I don't know
how they shoot up. I mean considering the Minnesota Timberwolves

(01:16:46):
a year ago had Karl Anthony Towns, Andrew Wiggins and
other pieces and still were in the middle of the pack.
That didn't even make the playoffs in the Western Conference.
I don't know how in the world, all of a sudden,
the Lakers end up sneaking up on Pepe. I got
buried for this because people could were so outraged that
I would say this, But it's the truth. Think Think
about what a fall from grace. This is seven years

(01:17:07):
ago the Lakers were celebrating and dropping confetti from the
rafters after winning Game seven over their arch rival Boston Celtics.
Just seven years later, they have turned into Summer League
fanboys over over a point card who can't shoot. I mean,

(01:17:28):
like I I don't. It's unbelievable to me, like what
one of the great fan bases has turned into. And
im and I get that there's still you know, if
you're selling hope and and hey, it's an improvement. We
just want to have something to cheer for. I totally
understand it. And I hope Lonzo Ball does well because
he's good for what we do. He's good for business.
I mean, regardless of what we say and what our

(01:17:50):
feelings are. I hope that he does well because he
seems like a good kid. And and I I support
what his dad is doing. But let's just be honest here.
Almost every team in the Western Conference improved. How you
all of a sudden think that turns into playoff hope?
This season blows my mind. I think they're going to
be the worst team in the Western Conference. I'm serious.

(01:18:12):
What about the Oklahoma City Thunder? As Nick Wright weighed
in on their duo on The Herd earlier, aside from
Golden State, is there any team in the West where
sure has a better top two? Like? Are we sure
James Hart and Chris Paul at this phase in Chris
Paul's career are a better top two than Russell Welsbring
and Paul George. I'm sure San Antonio does not have

(01:18:33):
a better top two Kawhi Leonard and who is Danny
Green now? Their second best player at ant LA Marcus Aldridge.
Not with what we saw from in the postseason and
the basketball we only got five players on the court.
If you've got two of the twelve best in the
world on your team, you're in pretty damn good shape.
You're in good shape. Yeah, I mean, I I don't know.
I don't I wouldn't go as far as what Nick

(01:18:53):
is saying. It makes it fun. I mean, it's a
reason to come out and watch the games. It's not
like they've had issues with the didn't or anything before,
but at least it's a reason to come out and
watch games. Just be be honest as an Oklahoma City
Thunder fan, the reason that this move was made is
because it was a desperate attempt to try and sell
Russell Westbrook on a long term deal there. That's just

(01:19:13):
that's what it is. So I mean, I I don't
think if you pull people in Oklahoma City aside and said, hey,
would you bet your life savings on the Oklahoma City
Thunder being in the Western Conference Finals? Nobody would take
that bet. No. I'd also almost take Anthony Davis and
DeMarcus Cousins. They don't play well together. We don't know
how well those two are going to play together. Well,
I know who we play well with, Dan Oh, who's that?

(01:19:35):
Noll Antonin Absolutely, I'm glad to have you with us
talking NBA and what is happening in the summer, like
the Summer League tournament getting underway in Las Vegas. But
there was other things going on. Lakers are busy Signingcativious
Caldwell Pulp yesterday to a one year deal, and Jonas
slowly but surely, the NFL is on the horizon. It's

(01:19:58):
like when you look deep and you look across that
field that you're driving past right now, Okay, it looks
like maybe a storm is brewing. That storm is the
National Football League. Okay, it is coming up, it is rising.
I am more jacked for this season than any of
the seasons that I've you can remember in the last
couple of years. Well, especially with that crummy made up

(01:20:20):
event show coming up later tonight, just a reminder of
real sports coming up around the corner. Yes, absolutely. If
you hate the SPS, then this is the show for you. Guys.
Jonas hates them. I hate them. We'll tell you how
much we hate them coming up in about twenty minutes.
But first we go to Las Vegas to talk some
heck NBA basketball, even some college hoops if we want,

(01:20:42):
with our Fox Sports Radio in center Aaron Torres, Hey, Aaron,
gonna talk to you again. How are you good to
talk to you guys? You know, I'll tell you this.
Making my drive home from Vegas easier was just listening
to you guys on the Leader in Sports talking Antelope
Valley am Sports and enjoy the show. Yeah, well, we

(01:21:03):
we are happy. Who's a better fit for the Lakers
contas called wal Pulper the Pope, that's what we want
to know would fit better into this Lakers team. Wow wow, Yeah,
it was crazy because the Pope thing kind of happened late.
You know what's really interesting about that Pope thing. And
I gotta give credit to our buddy Colin Cowherd, who

(01:21:25):
is obviously our Fox Sports radio brother. You know, he
said this on his show last week. It's interesting the
structure of the deal, if I'm not mistaken, because I
was kind of out and about when it came about.
But it's a one year deal, and you know that
opens up that that gives you a good player for
next year and also keeps your flexibility going forward. So,
you know, Magic Johnson, it's I don't want to give

(01:21:47):
him too much credit, but everything he's done so far
looks smart and it is both kind of for the
president and the future. I like everything he's done so far.
Am I crazy to say? And when I say this
that the Lakers could be the worst team in the
Western Conference this season, They're improved, but with every team
in the Western Conference also improving for the most part.

(01:22:07):
How how crazy of a statement is that for me
to say the Lakers are the worst team in the
Western Conference this season. Oh man, that's a great point,
you know. And I hadn't really thought about that, and
and like, I'll just give you an example. I watched
the Kings the other night at Summer League. And I
know it's Summer League, and I know Ronzo wasn't playing
in that specific game. But you look at the Kings,
they've been terrible forever. They actually look like they're gonna

(01:22:28):
be an awesome team next year. Uh, the Sun should
be rapidly improved. And so you look across the board,
those kind of bottom dwelling teams that have been there
the last two, three, four years, that's just not going
to be the case anymore. You know, even even somebody
like Phoenix has an established star in Devin Booker. I'll
be I'll be honest, I hadn't really thought of it
until you mentioned that. But it doesn't seem inconceivable to

(01:22:51):
me that the Lakers will be the worst team in
the West. Of course, that runs counter to LaVar Ball,
who's guaranteed a playoff spot for them. So we'll see, uh,
you know, see where things fall. But it's an interesting point.
I hadn't really thought about. How about an old vlade
Mr Divach in Sacramento turning things around? There? Is he
getting some respect there in the summer league? People going Wow,
he might actually know a thing or two about this

(01:23:12):
whole executive game. It's amazing how many people I saw
wanting to shake hands and take pictures with them. And
I don't know if they're just old school fans or
what's the deal? Like like and I gotta be honest, guy,
So you guys know this. I wrote a book about
Kentucky basketball. I am a huge DeMarcus Cousins defender, but
it seems like he was the black cloud over that

(01:23:32):
organization and the second that he left, all of a
sudden everything has come up Kings. You know, it was
amazing to me. Uh, not only did the young guys
look really good. I was in the arena the night
of I think it was like a twenty eight point
comeback they had on the Lakers the other night. They
ended up winning the game, but they were now like
twenty eight and Frank Mason looked awesome and Justin Jackson
looked awesome, and the Aaron Fox wilk awesome. But the

(01:23:53):
cool part about the Kings was this Zach Grandolph, Vince Carter,
George Hill, they were all in the building supply warding
those young guys. I just think it's amazing. In a year. Uh,
it feels like there has been a complete culture change.
It's a place that veterans now want to go. You know,
granted their paying them a little bit more than anybody
else was, but still like like, but it's still pretty incredible.

(01:24:14):
And there was just a lot of positive energy energy
around that organization. And to your guys point, yeah, was
the out tost of the town last fe day. I
gotta be honest eron Torres joining us talking NBA and
and even college hoops if we want our insider here
on Fox Sports Radio. The fact is is that I
when Georgia was brought in and you drafted the aeron Fox,

(01:24:35):
it was kind of like, wait a second, why then,
why did you draft de Aaron Fox? And then all
of a sudden, now you've got the influx of the
veterans that you mentioned Zach Randolph and Vince Carter. Yeah,
you alluded to the DeMarcus cousins things. Why why didn't
it happen then? Why is it happening now? And which
direction are they? Is it a win now situation in Sacramento?

(01:24:55):
Is it just to bring in all these leaders to
help these guys. That's the one thing I'm just a
little confused about with what the Kings have done is
are they trying to win now in a conference that
is nearly impossible or were these guys just brought in
to help lift some of these younger guys that they
brought up? Which is it? Aaron, Yeah, it's an interesting point.
The one that was kind of confusing to me, uh,

(01:25:18):
was that Randolph just because you know, you overpay him,
he wasn't a starter for a good chunk last year
in Memphis. Um, George Hill kind of makes sense because
he can play on the ball, he can play off
the ball. And I think asking dearon Fox to kind of, um,
you know, be that guy be a point guard for
a t two games next season and lead a young
team I think would have been really tough. So I

(01:25:41):
I get your point, Dan, like I really do. I
think in this case, it was more of targeting the
right veterans. And I know that in years past back
Randolph you know, did have the most sparkling reputation, but
he really kind of uh you know, had a rebirth
in Memphis and was really kind of a pillar, for
lack of a better term, of that community. A guy
that really I think kind of quote unquote grew up

(01:26:01):
in Memphis, Vince Carter. You know, we remember him as insanity,
but he has kind of turned into this like sage
old veteran that I think, you know, the people that
I know in Memphis really thought that he had a
great locker room presence. So to me, look, I I
think that it's part uh you know, Look, I think
they want to win more and I think, by the way,
in their defense, it was asking a lot to have

(01:26:24):
Deer and Fox and Scalabisierre and guys like that lead
this team for ad two games. So I think it's
a short term kind of show these guys the ropes.
But make no mistake, Dear and the guys I mentioned
Dear and Fox, justin Jackson scalabis here, those guys are
the future of the franchise in the long term plan. Uh.
From people you talked to around the league that have
been covering the summer league, like you yourself, Who is

(01:26:46):
the most impressive out of this rookie class so far
and who's been the most disappointing? Sure, I mean, first off,
I mean, look, I think across the board, Jason Tatum
has been the best player. By the way, there was
only one person pre draft who was saying Jayson Tatum
was the best player in this draft. You're talking to
him right here, King. Yeah, so I was gonna I

(01:27:10):
was gonna say, I'm I'm a very humble guy. I'm
not the kind of guy that pats myself on the back.
But I totally nailed out. Yeah, humility is one of
my best traits, by the way. But anyways, um so
he's been awesome. I think the guy and in this
started even before Vegas that has surprised me the most
is Donovan Mitchell from Utah. And I was not high

(01:27:31):
and I I openly admit this. I was not high
on him pre draft. He just felt like a guy
that was an undersized combo guard, couldn't handle the point.
You know, he didn't look comfortable in that role at
Louisville last year. But this guy has dominated Summer League,
not only here in in in Vegas, but also uh
in Utah, he was phenomenal as well, and so to me,

(01:27:52):
you know, he was I would say, by far the
most surprising guy. Uh so far as far as disappointments,
the guy that I watched yesterday. And I hope I'm
wrong on this, but Lowry marking in from the bulls,
I mean, he just, you know, physically and athletically, I
just don't know that he matches up as well as
I thought he did. It's a small sample size, but

(01:28:13):
to me, you look at the way that Donovan Mitchell
has performed. You look at the way Jason Tatum has performed.
You look at Lonzo Ball having a triple w other night.
A lot of these top rookies have been able to
hold their own. Dear and fox another one. Lowry marking
in with the Bulls just does not look like, you know,
a guy that's gonna be ready to do major things
next year. And oh, by the way, that's the worst
case scenario because you traded an All Star in part

(01:28:34):
to get him. Didn't he go O for ten from three? Yeah?
He went from three. You canna be like, I could
shoot with my feet and make one of those. What's that? No?
I just he went over to I haven't seen like
that was. That was a big part of the reason.
And there were I heard some people talking before the
draft that you know, there's a lot of buzz around

(01:28:54):
marketing in. He's he's he's a big guy, he can
shoot from the outside, and then he goes over ten
in the Summer League from the three. Well, listen, this
is too much Nick's talk on your part, because the
idea that he was the next Porzingis was bonkers to
begin with him. That was the analogy that everyone was making.
And I think you know Phil much. That must have
been one of the workouts where Phil fell asleep because
if he thought he was Porzingis two point oh, he

(01:29:16):
was out of his mind. But you know, the thing
is is like, you know, I'm always defensive of like
one bad game, like I was obviously on air the
night that Lonzo made his debut, and you know, everyone
wants to take it as something meaningful, but when you
put up to three games where you just don't look
like you know, it's he just looks like a guy
out there. And so yeah, I just it's been a

(01:29:37):
weird week for marketing In. And he's young and he's
kind of a um, you know, I want to give
him the benefit of the doubt. He just did not
look good out there. Hearon Torres joining us here on
the Doug Gottlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. He's Jonas Knocks.
I'm Dan Buyer in for Doug. Final one for me, Aaron.
Since we're talking about bad teams, Jonas mentioned Phoenix a
little bit earlier. How does their core look, not even

(01:29:59):
just joh Jackson, but whether it be Chris and Bender.
How did Phoenix look when you got a chance to
if you got a chance to see him in Vegas? Yeah,
I mean, look, they're they're so young, but I look,
I think they're gonna put it together. They're basically what
we were saying about the Kings if the Kings didn't
add veterans. The thing that I like about them, And
and I'm gonna make a really bad parallel here, but

(01:30:20):
like when the Thunder first kind of came together and
it was Durant and Westbrook and Hard and they were
all in their early twenties and had almost like a
college field to them. Like I remember like reading stories
of like they would play Xbox together and all that stuff,
and That's kind of the vibe that I get from
Phoenix is that, Um, they're all young, they're all in

(01:30:41):
this together. I thought that it was really cool. Devin
Booker was was in Vegas basically the entire week, Tyler
Ulis was at the Games yesterday. Um, And that's the
vibe that I like about them is they seem to
know like, yeah, we're young, we're gonna take our lumps,
but we're in this together. So to me, they're a team. Look,
they're not gonna make the playoffs next year, but I
think they'll be improved and I think they like being

(01:31:02):
around each other, which a lot of times, as we
know in the n B, a uh is the most
important thing in the first step towards something that could
be good long term. I had somebody send me a
tweet and they showed a video of Paul George getting
cheered on when he arrived at the airport at Oklahoma City,
and they said, yeah, he's not going anywhere. And I'm
thinking to myself, are you out of your mind? You
think those fans cheering in the middle of July is

(01:31:24):
the reason he's going to say, No, I don't want
to live in l A f that. I'm good. Here,
give me a break. Oh come on, what do you
have against Oklahoma City, Jonas? It's amazing, It's lovely this
time of year right here by the way, never been
but no whatever, Uh no, look, I'm with you, man,
I mean, you know, and I thought it was interesting.
You know, Paul George said the right thing earlier this

(01:31:44):
week with Lee Jenkins of oh, you know, if we
make the Western Conference finals, orf we somehow upset the Warriors,
like you know, of course, I'd be silly to leave.
But at the end of the day, I don't think
and I don't know where you guys stand, and I
don't think the thunder are going to be substantially better
with Paul George. I don't think this puts them over
even Houston right now or San Antonio, let alone obviously

(01:32:06):
the Golden State Warriors. So to me, again, it goes
back to what I was saying earlier with the Lakers.
I think it's a best case scenario for the Lakers
because Paul George goes to a place where there's really
no threat of him winning enough to stay. I thought
if he ended up in Boston or Cleveland or uh,
you know, even Houston that maybe he wins enough to stay.
I just don't think it's gonna happen in Oklahoma City.

(01:32:27):
So God bless those nice souls that showed up at
the airport, But all their claps, I think we're pretty
much for nothing. It's kind of fitting because when he arrived,
it's going to be the same tarmact that he leaves
on a year he goes to his new team, Aaron Torres,
find him on Twitter at Aaron underscored Torres. We appreciate it.
Safe travels back to l A and uh enjoy the
rest of the week. All right, thank you, guys, appreciate it.

(01:32:48):
He is Dan Buyer. I am Jonas Knox and for
Doug gott Leev here Fox Sports Radio. You can always
listen to this show as always on the I Heart
Radio app eight seven seven ninety nine on foxes the
phone number, and you can get Dan on Twitter at
Dan Buyer on Fox. Up next, though, we are going
to do something for you. This is this is our
gift to you. We are going to save about two

(01:33:10):
hours of your life. At least two to three hours
of your life will be saved because of us. Don't
go anywhere we'll explain next year on FSR Box Sports Radio.
To Doug Gottlieb Show, No Doug today, I'm Dan Buyer.
That's Jonas Knocks. We are in for Doug. Johnny Ramos
off today, so no b k Our edition with Sam
Kinsey are technical producers here, Eric Roberts manning the ship
as our executive producer in for Ryan Music and having

(01:33:33):
some fun. All Star Game was the last night home run.
Derby was the night before and people are saying, uh, man,
it's nothing though, nothing to watch tonight, nothing to do,
And Jonas to them, I would say, you are absolutely correct, okay,
because the garbage. Hate is a very strong word, let
me put it that way. But there are very few

(01:33:53):
things in this world that I hate more than the SPS. Okay,
and I think you feel the same way. It's uh,
it's the worst thing ever done on TV. It is
this isn't this isn't a Fox versus the ESPN thing.
If one was hearing it, I'd rip it just the same. Yeah,
they're the Foxies. I think we'd have a problem with it. Okay,

(01:34:15):
but guess what they don't Okay, they don't think that
much of themselves to give out fake awards, okay, and
there's a lot a lot of things wrong with the SPS. Okay.
So for this segment that we are calling I Hate
the SPS, we not only will bring up what we
hate about the SPS, but also give you a preview

(01:34:36):
of what garbage you were going to see tonight. So
let's strike up the band Jonas because for my portion
of this, okay, I hate the categories. Okay, I think
that they are so dumb, they are so stupid. And
there are three categories that I hate the most. Okay,

(01:34:56):
and they may have added new ones, um, but the
this is what at least they used to be. Okay.
The first category that I hate Best game? Okay, the
reason why best game stinks? Who the heck do you
give the trophy to? Okay, everybody that was at the game.
Do you get into the losing team that lost whatever game?

(01:35:19):
That is? Hey, Alabama, come out up, you lost the Clemson.
Here's your sp for best Game. Good job. Nick Saban
gonna walk on stage if he wins. That Best Game
is so dumb. It's just yeah, it's you. You won't be.
You won't be when you watch the SPS. Nick Saban
good thing. You're a SEC media days. The best game

(01:35:39):
is dumb. Okay. The second sp award that I hate
the most is Best Male Golfer. Okay. The reason why
this one is awful, there are about twenty five other
honors that golfers would rather win. Okay, how about the Masters?
How about a US Open? How about an Open Championship?
Next week? Throwing a PG Championship. Maybe you're on a

(01:36:02):
Rider Cup team or a President's Cup team. How about
the fed X Cup. How about how about for you
non golf fans out obviously you know I'm a golf incid.
Scottish Open anybody, Yeah, Scottish Open, Yes, going on this
week at where that place? Yes, there it is Don
Donald Dune Donald Links Broadcast. Okay, the way, the the

(01:36:25):
the thought of best male golfer, like this is gonna
extend into the champions Tour, you know, like like, okay,
it was gonna be Dustin Johnson, but we gave it
to Bernard Longer instead, you know, like sorry that that
that was always what would inspire VJ. Singh was finishing
runner up. You know, Lebron didn't win m v P.
He's out to prove something VJ didn't win it. He's out,

(01:36:48):
he's he's gunning for Tiger Woods. Now final dumbast award
for me. Jonas goes to Outstanding Team. Okay, like not
winning a super Bowl would be good enough. Okay, you
need a look. These are our five Lombardi Trophies that
would we won here in New England. But over here
are our sps for best Team. I can't believe anybody

(01:37:09):
takes this seriousness. I, honest to God, cannot believe anybody
takes this serious. Like if a professional wrestler wore his belt,
that was like one of the old gags they pulled
um the Big Show When he first got into wrestling,
he won the championship belt and the older guys pulled
a prank on him and said, hey, as the champion,
you've got to wear that everywhere. And so he didn't

(01:37:30):
know any better, so he warred in the airport, he
wore when he would go out, and finally arrestler pulled
him aside and said, what are you doing? He goes,
they told me I had to wear it. He's all, No,
they're joking with you, Man's all. He's all, it's pro wrestling.
Why are you wearing that around Like that's that's what
this is the equivalent to, like, like you actually take
this serious? Like if somebody I want to know and

(01:37:52):
nobody there will be honest about this. I want to
know how many trophies they found in the garbage on
the way out, black one like you not even recycled
with no cover, just a bag with the not tied
sort fits um. By the way, this just in congratulations

(01:38:13):
to the San Francisco forty Niners. Well what happened? Yeah?
Oh they were named sports Humanitarian Team of these Yes,
congratulations on your atrocious season. But you have brought home
some hardware. Now, well, who will be accepting that? It
will be Chip Kelly? Will he accept the award? Jed

(01:38:35):
york I had to even pronounce print out, had to
write a release and John york I guess did on
how the forty Niners contributed to the community. That's that's
what bothers me the most about the SPS. And I've
got to be honest. I had to look up the
categories to make sure that they were still there because
I haven't watched it in about eleven years. I remember

(01:38:56):
watching I was in Chicago at Mike Gives restaurant on
Chestnut in downtown Chicago, and I was out there. I
forget why. I was probably like trying to get a
job in radio. It was like ten years ago, which
didn't work. By the way, that trip, that trip was
a waste of time. But I was sitting at the
bar having beers by myself, watching the SPS, and I

(01:39:19):
can I can tell you family tragedies included. That was
one of the lower moments of my last sitting in
a bar in Chicago by myself watching the SPS, going
what happened to me? Where did this all go wrong?
Best games coming up? Around drinks, best games coming out?

(01:39:42):
Here's what bothers me when when whoever's hosting, all of
a sudden they try and make him a comic monologue
is going to be brutal, absolutely brutal. And you know, people,
I'm sure we'll tweet about it and I'll see it,
you know, brush up on the timeline from from whatever.
But Peyton Manning is the host this year, and you're

(01:40:04):
gonna get some of the worst jokes you've ever heard.
I mean, and I say this, there's the whole show
is terrible. And I say this as somebody who's done
bad shows before. I've had some stinkers. Nothing comes close
to what you're gonna hear at the spis. It is
so Peyton Manning will come out there and he'll do
the old well an honor to be hosting here. I

(01:40:26):
got confused when I was leaving the airport. I thought
for sure, with me hosting, they would have held this
event at a little place called oh Maha, Oh hey,
Lebron almost didn't recognize you get a haircut or something.

(01:40:47):
Oh my god. And and like the previews for it
where they pan over to the crowd, and the crowd
they try and make it seem like they're laughing at
some joke. Oh my oh it is. It is the
worst they are gonna make it. It's gonna be the
worst night of Peyton Manning's life. This will be the
worst night of his life. And I know Jeffrey Gorman

(01:41:09):
who's on Steve Gorman Sports, He's a very good friend
of Peyton Manning. Jeffrey Gorman is listening right now. Send
your buddy Peyton a message and tell him to abort mission,
get the hell out of there. Don't be a part
of this disaster. He's gonna take part in later. I
wonder if they're going to deliver Papa John's pizzas tonight.
Will be so funny. Yes, that'll be coming Jonas. Look
it's Papa John. Or how about this? Or how about this?

(01:41:33):
Let me see this. Now it's time to find out
who the nominees are. God, it's just unbelievable. Man. Yeah,
Chicken parm is gonna be there tonight. I don't even
have to watch nothing to. Today's show is brought to

(01:41:54):
you by True Car. With True Car, you can find
out what other people in your area paid for the
same cary you're looking for new or us visit through
cards to enjoy a more confident car buying experience. He
is Dan Buyer. We're ever gonna be invited to the SPS.
Do you think after that? I'm not sure, Melba representative. Uh,
he is Dan Buyer. I'm Jonas Knocks in for Doug

(01:42:16):
Gottlieber Fox Sports Radio. You can always listen on the
I Heart Radio app and you can get me on
Twitter at the Jonas Knocks. I do want to let
you know that coming up next, we are going to
really get into some hot topics. A lot of people
out there are gonna say, well, you know, maybe there's
not a lot going on, but but believe it or not,
there are some major issues developing in the world of sports,

(01:42:37):
and they are just sixty seconds away from your ears.
First though, let's find out what's trending. It is The
Doug Gottlieb Show, and he is Jonas Knocks. I'm Dan
Buyer in for Doug. Hey, there is a pretty strong word. Okay,
but you gotta love something in order to hate it.
So I don't hate the SPS. I just think it's
the worst thing in the history of television. I do,
I do, but I do love Steve the Seger who

(01:42:59):
now joins is for one of our favorite parts of
the show here on Fox Sports Radio, on The Doug
Gottlieb Show, that would be the Press. The Press, We
bring Steven to give us an update on what's happening
in the world of sports. Some stuff maybe we touched
on earlier, some stuff we may have missed. What's the latest.

(01:43:20):
Good afternoon to you both gents. Again, of course we
mentioned there are a couple of NFL stories we mentioned
earlier in the show. The new Forbes list coming out,
if not just most valuable NFL franchises, but in all
the sports franchises in the world, the Dallas Cowboys are
the most valuable, according to them, over four billion dollars,
and the Yankees are number two. Another NFL story for you.

(01:43:42):
The hottest Forbes are now brit Forbes of the spurs
man on fire. You watched him at Michigan State. He
was amazing, like he was a he was a stone
called killer. Okay, and now you see why these spartans
end up becoming acclimated in the NBA and becoming great successes.
So far in the summer leagu on fire. Looking down
the list Brin Forbes under four billion dollars. Uh. They

(01:44:06):
in the NFL, they split the TV revenue. Of course,
the news is out today because today was the day
the Green Bay Packers released their finances. This is how
we find out the NFL numbers. Nobody in the NFL
wants to release their finances, but the Packers have to
because they're publicly owned company. Today those numbers came out
and we find out if you add up all the

(01:44:28):
TV rights revenues, Fox, Direct TV, everybody, the NFL teams
are splitting a TV pie of seven point eight billion dollars.
In other words, per team, two hundred forty four million
dollars just in TV revenues nationally per club. I looked
it up. The salary cap a couple of years ago
was one hundred forty four million. So it is darn

(01:44:50):
near impossible not to turn a profit as an NFL
owner because you can pay for your entire payroll before
you ever sell a ticket thanks to all the TV money.
It's amazing the Green Bay Packers make that much money
and still they dressed their players and Mike and Ike boxes. Well,
it's unbelievable. Well, you guys don't realize. Growing up, you
guys don't know this. When the Packers actually lost money,

(01:45:13):
they were called the Red Bay Packers. But now that
they're making it, that is good. You're taking notes, Sam,
These are puns. This is yet another punny segment on
this show. Is over seventy million dollars as the profit
they turned apparently the Packers this past year. Onto What's
coming up tonight? I mentioned US men's soccer in the
Gold Cup. Are you aware that the US men's soccer

(01:45:35):
team is going to play an opponent called Martinique? Does
anyone know where Martinique is. Um yes, uh oh oh
Sam excuse me, Steve sam Kinsley, our technical producer, like
to get in on this one. I believe Martinique is
in the Caribbean. There's French speaking islands. I like how
you weren't sure even though you've been there. You know,

(01:45:57):
you said, I think it's theirs are there. I think
I was in the Dominican Republican but I'm not sure. No,
it's in the waters in between roughly Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
So yes, Caribbean, very small, lower population than any US state.
And that is the US opponent tonight. And it is
I found out today not only French speaking, that any

(01:46:18):
citizen of Martinique is considered a full right citizen of France.
They send people to the Congress of France like Hawaiians
send people to the House of Representatives. This is not,
by the way, a FIFA tournaments the Gold Cup. If
you're a soccer player who's ever good enough to be
in the World Cup, you would have to play for France.
Martinique is not in Okay, all right, okay, yesterday was

(01:46:41):
big Amazon sales day. What was the most popular products
sold on Amazon Prime Day. It was the one that
gets Alexa into your homes people with a little bit
of a discount down to thirty five bucks. Echo Dot
was the most animals on top products sold. They didn't
reveal exactly how many units though we're sold yesterday. It's

(01:47:04):
the thing that you set on the table and you
can ask it questions. Alexa tell me instead of actually
googling things. Yeah, it gives you a lot with voice,
it gives you a lot of information. The NBA with
plenty of changes today, gentlemen, your thoughts on them. They're
trying to improve the flow of the game. So they've reduced,

(01:47:25):
for example, the number of total time outs per game
fourteen total instead of eighteen total. In fact, fewer timeouts
in the last three minutes of a game as well,
only two time outs per team then instead of three.
And there's no more finely, no more difference between the
full time outs and the twenty second time outs. Those
twenties those actually lasted sixty seconds long. Yeah, and everybody

(01:47:48):
knew it. I never understood that. And there was like
two different signals to give a twenty or a full
like wasn't it shoulders twenty? And then the other one
was a full and now every and the fulls were
ninety seconds. Now every time them out in the NBA
will be seventy five seconds long. There's no twenties that,
none of that each team, And if there's an overtime,
you only get two time outs in overtime instead of three.

(01:48:09):
They're hoping for more flow, shorter total games. I also
heard that they're going to improve the quality of play
moving forward by eliminating the Eastern Conference. If anybody else
had seen that, they do say, by the way, that
whole hey, let's just see them one through sixteen is
probably a non starter because studies have shown how much
more travel would be involved, not only regular season, but
for playoff series. You'd have more three time zone UH

(01:48:33):
difference opponents, for example East versus West in first round.
Since that that's probably not going to the NBA board
did move the trade deadline. It's before the All Star
break now instead of after it and the least season opener.
Apparently the date is October seventeenth, much earlier than before.
We assume Golden State will be getting its rings October

(01:48:53):
the seventeen. The trade deadline is interesting because remember a
couple of years back, the NFL had there so early
in the season that they moved it because they wanted to.
They thought they would encourage teams to do more deals
in more of the middle of the season. This we
already kind of knew the playoffs set up by the
time that it ended up happening. So this is also
done to try to encourage more deals because there's a

(01:49:14):
little bit more of the season now to be played
than maybe everybody knowing how they're going to sort out.
When did the schedules come out game by game? When
does that normally happen with the NBA come out? I
don't know, and I don't think they have a full
show like the NFL next month. Actually, you know what
I actually think they do, which, of course most of
the country gets, of course fall into the forehead. What

(01:49:35):
am I thinking? Ran Locked you in the news today.
He will return to swimming competition this week. He has
a ten months suspension now over from Rio. He will
race tomorrow at USC where he trains. How many how
many people use the joke? Just percentage of people out there,
like in the world, Like, how many people percentage wise
do you think use the joke? Ryan Locked the almost

(01:49:58):
Scott locked up, are you in the monologue? Yeah, I
wouldn't be surprised that that that'll be Peyton mannings go too.
I'm sure the suspension was long enough by the way,
it kept him out of the recent US Nationals and
therefore he didn't qualify for the World Championships, but he
is back to competitive swimming. MLB is off until Friday night.

(01:50:18):
Houston Nutt in the news today. He sued Old Miss
today for defamation of character. The former Mississippi football coach
alleges the school violated his separation agreement from eleven with
a long running smear campaign. After the n c AS
notice of allegations and all these proposed violations against Old Miss,

(01:50:39):
he says Old MS has been said most of it's
because of Houston nut when actually it turned out most
of it was because of the current football coach. There,
you freeze the way to go pass the buck with
a normal name. By the way, a once coach freeze
coach Nut. Yeah, it's very bizarre. And finally, Wimbledon, with

(01:51:02):
the upsets today, we have an American man making the
final four of a Grand Slam for the first time
since Andy Roddick eight years ago. And you could say
the only reason American Sam Querry is in the Wimbledon
Semis is because the number one ranked player he beat,
Andy Murray, lost in five sets, because he's been bothered
by a hip injury this month and still tried to

(01:51:23):
get it out today. Novak Djokovic, the two seed, also
out because his withdrawal Andy Murray for now still keeps
the number one world ranking despite his loss today. But
Djokovic is out, has had an elbow injury for about
a year, may miss this year's US Open as well.
I will say this about tennis, and this is no joke.
The biggest story would be Venus Williams winning, considering that

(01:51:43):
she had over the last couple of weeks. And the
amazing thing is is Venus is one Wimbledon five times.
She only has seven Grand Slam championships, but she wins this,
it's eight. It puts her in the top ten to
do it without sister Serena and the bracket, and so
may think it's less, but she's thirty seven years and
with an autoimmune disease that's affected the endurance in an

(01:52:03):
endurance sports. She's playing tomorrow in the Semis tomorrow morning
against someone who's now a British citizen, so they're kind
of warming up to her. In Britain, they haven't, you know,
for all of this Wimbledon history, they've had very few
Brits in the last century make it to a Wimbledon final.
Number six seed Juanna Kanta born in Australia, representing Great
Britain now might make it to the final. Let me
ask you, yes, okay, you've got to. You've got two options.

(01:52:27):
You can either watch twenty four hours of Wimbledon NonStop
or twenty four hours of the SPS. Hey I like
or or the electric chair is not a fan of
the All England Club variety and tennis. It's a large field.
Who's gonna win best tennis? Wonder? Who is going to

(01:52:49):
win best racket? Oh, it's a racket. Thanks Steve Okay
out there and pressed the press. There was a back end. Uh.
He is Dan Buyer. I'm Jonas Knocks is his Fox
Sports radio filling in for Doug Gottlieb here. Why don't
you know? We are brought to you by True Car.
With True Car, you can find out what other people
in the area paid for the same car. You're looking

(01:53:10):
for newer used Visit True Car to enjoy a more
confident car buying experience. A living legend of this show,
a man who has become the most popular element of
sports talk radio for the last two to three hours.
He is going to join you and that's next the
Doug Gotlips Show here on Fox Sports Radio. No Doug today,

(01:53:31):
I'm Dan Buyer. That is Jonas Knox, Thanks for hanging
out with us. Baseball is All Star Game now a
thing of the past. But you know what we do
on the show, Jonas, We dig. We dig for information, uh,
to find out what's what's happening, maybe just right below
the service or what's happening really deep below the surface.
Last night we saw the All Star Game on Fox
in Miami, ratings up from a year ago. We'll just

(01:53:52):
leave it at that home run derby was pretty dandy
on Monday night. But that's not what the All Star
weekend is about. To the All Star festivities is about
out As you asked our baseball insider mel Anton, I
don't know if you've heard of them from serious x
M pass and TV earlier about the true meaning of
the All Star Game for the players and that's all
of the extracurricular activities that go on in festivities like this,

(01:54:16):
and you know, there's a lot of parties, a lot
of things to see, a lot of things to do.
But I think the number one piece of advice managers
give to their players to before they go is be
careful and get some rest. And the fact that Jeff
could fly on either Sunday night or Monday morning, um,
you know, makes it a little tough. I think they
can be reasonable. I think you can have a fun
time and party and still get plenty of sleep. But

(01:54:39):
but it's always a challenge, and I'm sure it's always
a temptation of question about it. I'm always surprised how many.
And it was good catching up with Mel. It had
been a while since we had a chance to speak
to him, so it was good. Yeah, hearing Mel on
Fox Sports radio airwaves again. But I'm always surprised the
guys that get to the All Star break and go
on vacation someplace. To me, isn't baseball about the grind.

(01:55:00):
You're always traveling, you're always in one hotel. If I
if I was finally got a week off in the
middle of a baseball season, I'm staying home. Yeah, like
going anywhere, I'm I'm always I'm always gone. I don't
understand going to like um Martinique or going to the Caribbean. Okay,
that's what you do in January. Okay, when you're a
baseball player and it's nice, you know what, go check

(01:55:22):
up the nice north Woods of Vermont. You know, see
what's happening in Canada. Heck, go to my neck of
the woods. Go to northern Wisconsin. Check that out for
him this week. You know what, get a little R
and R on a lake, do some canoeing. It's stuff
like that. Come at the Thousand Oaks. Yeah, go to
go to Mastros. It's right next to pet Boys for
some reason. The great thing about All Star Games when
I've gone, you go in and Monday is busy because

(01:55:44):
they have a press conference and then you've got the
you got BP and then it's home run Derby. But really,
on Tuesday, these guys don't have to be at the
ballpark until one or two o'clock, and so it is
on after the home run Deer. But that's where everybody
has gone from town or gone from the ballpark on
Monday night. And actually go on on Tuesday night, and
today's the day of recovery for or at least the

(01:56:05):
All Stars, especially in South Beach. I mean, just let
her rip um. Now, I do have a confirmation on
something new. We asked the question, by the way, coming
up about nine minutes from now eight or nine minutes
from now here on Fox Sports Radio Top of the Hour,
which is a radio term for six pm Eastern Time.
Steve Gorman Sports heard on many of these Fox Sports
Radio affiliates, but you can find it on the I

(01:56:26):
Heart Radio app. Jeffrey Gorman, who is the co host
on Steve Gorman Sports to the great Steve Gorman. Jeffrey
Gorman is a good friend of Peyton Mannings. Peyton Manning
has was given the very unfortunate news that he will
be hosting the SPS later the worst thing ever to
UH Grace a television set in the history of the world,

(01:56:48):
The SPS and UH and I asked the question after
us taking a battle axe to the entire show for
about ten minutes, Will we ever be invited? And I
do have it on authority in a private text message
from Jeffrey Gorman that that no, we will not be
invited it's not going to happen. Ever, Um I'll tell
you who else is not going to be invited. Calvin

(01:57:09):
Kelvin Johnson back to Detroit after he said this in
advance of the Italian Bowl that is taking place in
Italy about his former employer, the Detroit Lions. Just like
in basketball, you know, guys, you know they create, you know,
these super teams. But it's not quite like that in
football where I had the freedom just to go. I
was stuck in my contract with Detroit so and they

(01:57:31):
told me they will not release my contract so I
would have to come back to them. So I did
see a chance from the winning Super Bowl at the time,
and for the workout was putting in. You know, it
wasn't worth my time to keep on beating my head
against the wall and not going anywhere. Definition of insanity.
It was the Lions fault that he signed that long
term contract that bade him all that money. I mean, listen,

(01:57:52):
I think that the Detroit Lions are a very frugal
franchise and them haggling to were there great players in
the history of the franchise over what what in in
return his pocket change to these NFL franchises is pretty pathetic.
I just don't think that his argument holds any water.

(01:58:13):
Instead of Maga Trondy sounding like a mega dope, do
we gotta dump that? Can you say that on the air?
Very very okay? You can. You got Sam's approval. The
fact is, there's so much to rip on the Detroit Lions. Okay, Okay,
it's easy, it's low hanging fruits. But for once, I

(01:58:35):
actually side with the organization on this. He's the one
that became the highest paid receiver in NFL history, Okay,
and signing the contract because they wouldn't let him out
because the salary cap issues, or for the amount of
money that they owed him still allow him to keep
two thirds of his signing bonus when he retired. Yet
they were the problem. By the way, I do have
it on good authority. A player to watch in Lions

(01:58:58):
camp this year that a lot of people think is
going to make the team. Who's that? Jonas mell Antony. Wow,
