Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Sports Boom, What Up America, Doug gott
Leaves show, Fox Sports Radio coming to you a live
and direct from the City of Angels. Hopefully you are well.
We got day baseball taking place in Apparently Niquill works
for Steven Strasburg. The embarrassing story coming out of d C,
(00:23):
but Strasburg getting a chance to write his own kind
of personal wrong. We'll get to that upcoming. But so
much to discuss, Absolutely a ton to discuss in regards
to UH to Major League Baseball, and I actually want
to relate it to what's going on with the New
York Giants. That because John Farrell was relieved of his
(00:45):
duties today as manager of the Boston Red Sox. Now
in regards to UM. In regards to Farrell, I mean,
John Farrell. You know, there's two jobs that you have
if you're a if you're a manager, right, it's like
two different things. One is you gotta win in the
regular season and get to the postseason. Then we started
(01:07):
kind of and that's managing the egos, managing your lineup,
fighting through injuries, all of these things farall of course
came over or came back to Boston. After being a
pitching coach of course, was the manager of the Toronto
Blue Jays. But so much of what took place, so
(01:31):
much of what took place, is because it's really really
hard to be promoted from essentially within. And I know
he came back from Toronto, but John Farrell's persona is
the way in which he carried himself. The things in
which he did as pitching coach didn't work as manager,
(01:53):
which is kind of similar to what's happening with Ben
McAdoo and the New York Giants. Ben McAdoo, of course, remember,
came over for a year with from the Green Bay Packers,
was the offensive coordinator and helped kind of resurrect the
career of Eli Manning after he led the league and interceptions.
They tried to implement the offense that that Aaron Rodgers used,
(02:17):
and even though McAdoo had never really called plays with
Aaron Rodgers, it was, Hey, if that offense can do
for Aaron Rodgers, why can't an offense do the same
for Eli Manning. So, um McAdoo is coaching a team
that's oh and five and like likely to be O
and six. Not only they lose Odell Beckham Jr. Earlier today,
(02:41):
earlier this week, for the last weekend for the year
with a broken ankle. But did they go on the
road to Denver. That's an almost unwinnable game. They have
no healthy wide receivers and dominic rodgers. Commardy left the team,
suspended from the team. Walked away from the team because
he wasn't playing well. He didn't like playing the slot,
(03:03):
didn't like how he's being handled. They get into an
argument during the game and it carries over into the week.
I'm not saying this is even the Peter principal, right.
Peter principle, of course, is when you're promoted above the
level of your aptitude. I'm saying I think it's hard
to be promoted as a coordinator within the same organization
(03:26):
in which you were a coordinator. Like Kyle Shanahan's doing
a nice job in San Francisco, Sean McVeigh is doing
a nice job with the Rams. Those guys are both
coordinators last year. But there are coordinators with different franchises
and like, look, there's there's there's a couple of different
levels to it. I mean, I think the first level
is like Dirk Cutter was the coordinator with the Tampay
(03:48):
Buccaneers got promoted to being a head coach, and that's
had some mixed reviews. Part of the problem with being
that coordinator is, no matter how much you want to
talk about defense, if you're an offensive guy, they still
look at you as a d offensive as an offensive guy.
I didn't really care about us. He doesn't really know
about us. He's only pretending to. But the biggest issue
is the biggest issue is you have to go from
(04:12):
being good cop to being bad cop. That's really hard
to do. It's easy to go from being good cop
all the time to being bad cop if you're not
in the same precinct. It's hard to do it within
the same precinct. It's hard to completely change a persona,
and that persona has to change if you want to
be a head coach. Here's Ben McAdoo earlier today on
(04:34):
Dominick Roger's COMMARTI RC came in yesterday, we had a
conversation that was personal. Upstairs, came in today, decided to leave.
We will suspend. Is this something that came out of nowhere?
Came up a conversation yesterday and he came in to
the drolling this morning the side of relief, and we
will put amongst the swampson have anything, can do it
happening Sunday. That's all I have for the writing how long.
(04:56):
That's all I have for you right now. That's all
I have for you right now. So look, I think
that that mcadoo's trying to be a tougher guy, trying
to trying to admit, administer justice for the team, trying
to show some resiliency. He's got a mess on his hands.
And like, I don't blame him, even if, even if
(05:19):
the defensive coaches are wrong for how they're handling Dominick
Rogers Commarty, the fact is that like, hey, right now, dude,
we just don't have time for you to be to
be complaining. We just don't. We have no healthy wide receivers, none,
we're starting to figure out a running game. Our offensive
line has been a disaster. We have to go on
the road to Denver. Were like, we have so many
(05:39):
issues that if you're gonna be the sticky wheel, we
can't give you all the grease. You've gotta just be gone.
So I don't even know, and I don't think any
of us understand, um fully, whose side of the argument
we should be on and even with that said, you
should be on the Giants management and coaches side of
the argument because of all the other the stuff going on.
(06:04):
But the bigger issue is in relation to John Farrell, who,
of course uh managed the Boston Red Sox to not one,
but two divisional crowns. Excuse me, a regular season divisional crowns.
I think the hardest part was he was seen as
the pitching coach John Farrell, and it's really hard to
(06:27):
be seen as pitching coach John Farrell into manager John Farrell.
Ben McAdoo is seen as offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo. It's
hard for him to be seen as head coach Ben McAdoo.
Like within one year of being head coach, Ben McAdoo
went from a bowl haircut literally looked like somebody put
a cereal bowl on his head where he cut his
hair too. Now it's like slick back, like no, i
(06:50):
I'm a new guy this year, Like, no, you're not
the same guy as opposed to. Had Ben McAdoo gone
out and taken any other job in the league, any
other job in the league, he might be viewed differently.
I mean, you guys, remember good fellas, right, remember Joe
(07:14):
Pesci's character go ahead music, Well you had your hand up.
Are you referring to when they walk into the bar,
and is it Billy Batts. Yeah, he gets out of
jail and they have the big welcome home party, and
Billy Batts has given Joe Pesci a really hard time because, yeah,
exactly when Joe Pesci back in the day used to
(07:36):
be known as the shoe shiner, but he had raised
the ranks since he was in prison. And then the
they basically jumped in because he wouldn't stop running his
mouth and they killed him. Yeah, they killed him right
by the way, who do you remember who the actor was?
That's that's got Romo's You gotta get that right. The
Paul Sorvino wasn't it? Uh? Uh? Wasn't it Frank Frank Vincent.
(08:04):
It could have been Frank Vincent. You don't think Frank Vincent.
I think, yeah, I think Frank Frank Vincent played Billy Betts. Anyway,
goods shine backs, and and that's how people treat people
who are It's very very difficult. It's a little different
when it's college basketball. When it's college football, um, because
(08:26):
you can bring in new guys who did come to
play for you. But during that first year, I mean,
look what coach O was going through. Right he was
at l s U. He had been a head coach before,
at Old Miss, he had been an interim head coach before.
But he's still coach. Oh, Coacho is a good guy coach. Coach.
When you're a head coach, you can't be the good guy.
(08:49):
Sometimes you've gotta be bad guy. Sometimes you gotta play
bad cop. My view of why John Farrell because John
Ferrell didn't lose the game, lose his job because of
his tactics, because of adjustments he made or did not make. No, no, no, no, no,
not at all. John Farrell lost his gig because players
(09:10):
didn't like him. They just didn't like him. And right now,
the Giants they have personnel issues that are going to
keep them from beating beating the Denver Broncos. But when
Dominic Rodgers Commardy walks out on you and you start
to lose the locker room, Mets players don't like you,
and best guesses it's because that move. In basketball, they
(09:33):
call it the eighteen months, the furthest eighteen inches. You
can ever move from assistant to head coach. It's a
lot harder. It's a lot harder to make that move.
Um when it's within the same organization. It just is
(09:53):
and it should be the opposite, right, And maybe sometimes
it is because you're like, oh, that guy is destined
for big things and maybe in our b and this
is like you know, you're the filling guy and filling
guy like I've I've been filling guy for different radio
shows here but previously, and you work with people enough
and like, but it's different in positions where you're an executive.
(10:14):
It just is because they see you, even though it
should be champion. Hey rose through the ranks of When
you've got a bunch of men in a room, the
head coach has to be the bad guys. Sometimes the
assistant coach, a lot of times the good guy. Sometimes
the opposite. Sometimes the the assistant coach of the h
in are the bad guys and the head coach is
a good guy. But to completely change roles from good
(10:37):
cop to bad cop or bad cop to good cop
right before their eyes, that's a hard thing to do.
Case in point, what happened with the Red Sox. Case
in point, what's happening with the New York Giants. All
of Famer Anthony Munos joins the show. Up coming next,
I'll ask him about about the Bengals, his former team.
(11:00):
People have declared Marvin lewis done, but they change coordinators
and all of a sudden they have new life. What
should realistic expectations of that Bengals team? B Plus, I
got to ask him about this. Ben Rothsberger at least
hinted about retirement. Was it a search for somebody to
(11:21):
give him a compliment or was it legitimate and that's
why he's played poorly. We'll talk with the Hall of
Famer up coming next. But first, if you saw are
my Facebook live yesterday, not only did I take it
to the gun show? Sorry about that, I was. I
didn't know we're gonna do Facebook live, but I took
you guys to the gun show. In addition, today were like, wow,
(11:42):
you look fresh, You look rested. Yes, I do, because
I'm sleeping on a Casper mattress, and frankly you should too.
Casper's two two high tech films are much better than
those old, overpriced matches I used to use. It comes
in this how they do that size box, which is
just the small box, you pop it open, and also
you're like, Wow, there's a whole mattress in there. Superior
(12:02):
quality in not just the packaging, but in how the
mattress is actually made. Sleeping on the mattress is the
best way to try it, right. I don't just take
my word for it. I'm gonna let you try it
for free for a hundred nights risk free, go to

(12:46):
to today. Uh, I have found the perfect college football
parallel to USA soccer um and like, look, obviously the
TV side over at Fox Sports, Fox Sports one, that
one's tongue more than a little bit last night with
Team USA being eliminated from the World Cup next year
in Russia, Yeah, we're not in it. It is. There
(13:10):
is a little bit of a little bit of selection
Sunday to it, right, Well, we're arguing selection Sunday. A
lot of times we argue about these last teams in
that they weren't going to the final four anyway. And
I know there have been teams go from the first four.
One team go for the first four to the final four,
got it, but like it wasn't like we were going
to the final four. So it was just a matter
(13:32):
of what round would we get out of the group stage.
And so we don't have to pretend to really care
about soccer. And I understand soccer. Guy, You're like, no, no no,
I I care about soccer. Like, good for you, congratulations.
I speak to the millions and millions and millions who
(13:52):
really liked the World Cup. Let's say that that, well,
I would like to see Team USA and it's like
the only sporting events to which were not the favorite
that's kind of cool to be the underdog, but we're
kind of the only ones that are really gonna miss it.
Miss us. Um let's wow. You talk about a valuable resource.
(14:15):
All the discussion in the early weeks of the NFL season.
Sure we talked about star players, a lot of discussions
about offensive line play, and who better to help us
with it than the Hall of Famer Anthony Muonios. He
joins as part of the Built for Tough Offensive Line
in the week that recognizes the NFL's toughest old lines
and who are in the trenches every game making sure
(14:38):
the work gets done just like the new two eighteen
four d F one fifty and the winners announced every
Tuesday afternoon at NFL dot com. Slash Ford Anthony Moon
Joe's joins us on the doug at Lip Show. Who
won Week five? Eagles? Did they really four e It's
(14:58):
interesting because they weren't playing well to start the year,
were they, Anthony? You know what, it's look a little
bit and uh, you know, we look at and first
of all, thanks for having me and I appreciate the
opportunity to talk about the big guys. Uh, you know,
usually were talking quarterbacks and talking man teams and defensive
pass rushers. But it's great to talk about a whole
unit and not been thrilled. This is uh, you know,
(15:20):
the built for the tough offensive line of the week,
as you mentioned, having a chance not just to recognize one,
but as you said, the whole offensive line. And yeah,
I mean it's one of those things where you know,
and it doesn't surprise me when you're talented, you have
a lot of talent on the offensive line that it's
gonna takes a little bit. Um. I think that's just
part of the game. Now. It's just my humble opinion
(15:41):
with you know, the way training camps are run, the
lack of not a whole lot of playing time in
the preseason and you're not seeing things you know full
speed like once you hit regular season, and to me,
it takes a little bit of time. But like I said,
when you know, when you have guys like you know
Peters and you know a new skiing Kelsey and they
(16:01):
won't have Lane Johnson this week, but uh, you know,
it's not gonna take a whole lot of time to
come together. And uh, you know the Eagles, uh you know,
have done a great job you watch Kansas City's offensive line,
you know, the Jaguars. I mean, it would have thought
that Jaguars. Don't mean it played pretty well, you know,
the last couple of weeks. But yeah, it's exciting to
be able to watch and to watch him as a
(16:23):
group because it takes a group, it takes cohesiveness, it
takes togetherness, it takes knowing each other, and uh, you know,
especially in the day of free agency, that's one unit
that you need to really, I believe, play together for
a few years and get to know each other and uh,
you know, it's a movement. It's kind of tough, and
it's rare if you did. Guys that are you know,
(16:44):
together for quite a while. One of the one of
the interesting offensive lines that struggled during the season that
does appear to be performing better. He's your former team,
the Cincinnati Bengals. Of course, they lost Andrew Whitworth, who's
kind of re established the offensive line with the with
the l a Rams. Uh give me is it is
it simply that they're scheming to get the get rid
of the ball quicker so the offensive line doesn't have
(17:06):
to block as long or they are have they improved,
are they just playing better, better football, and that's why
the Bengals offense has protected any Dalton better. I think
it's a combination of the boat and boat. And you
mentioned Andrew with with him and the guy is still performing. Uh.
I'd say he's still one of the top five tackles
in the league. I mean, the guy just keeps on going.
I think he's thirty five years old and uh, and
(17:27):
having another actors to another excellent start. But you would
not only lose him, but Kevin Zeisler, the right guard
who signed the big contract with the with the Cleveland Browns.
And then you get two tackles that basically have not
played a whole lot during their third year. Uh. You
know way he and Fisher, and you had Clint Bowling,
who's the veteran I think it's seven eight years um.
(17:48):
And then the right guard. You know you have started
out with Trey Hopkins. He gets banged up, you go
t J. Johnson. But I think it's a combination of
playing better plus schemes. I mean, you know, with the
offenses now, you can't sit back I don't care who
you are, you can't sit back there at the deep
drop and expect to have all day to throw the
football because of what the defenses are doing. So they're
throwing the quick ones, but they still go down fill.
(18:10):
I mean Sunday you saw a J hit Uh Dalton
hit a J on a long path, you know, seventy
plush yards, So that took some time. So the young
guys are playing better. Uh, they're you know, helping them out,
scheming better. So I think with all that being said,
I think it takes all of it. It takes you
playing better, it takes it the offensive coordinator and the
(18:31):
game plan. You know, maybe you help this guy you
slide that way, you chip here, you you know, maybe
you keep another guy into to protect. So that's what's
going on. And uh, it was obvious that, you know,
a Buffalo Bill's defense that uh, you know, been pretty shat.
I talked to Jake Fisher Saturday morning. I happened to
be at walk To, which is rare. I had some
people that I took there to to observe, and I
(18:53):
asked him and said, so, tell me about the Buffalo
Bill's defense. He said, he's been here thirty three years.
He said, probably one of the most disciplined defense is
that he is facing the time here, so they're pretty
good coming in and for them to throw the ball
the way they did, uh what they did? They take
on the Steelers this week they started to stretch where
they play four of their next five on the road,
culminating against the Bronco is probably the most difficult game.
(19:15):
But the Steelers are interesting because, um here they sit
at three and two a top the same division, and
yet it's like the the least happy three and two
team on Earth. Right the quarterback throws five picks. That's
after the week after Antonio Brown throws a fit. Levy
on Bell wants a new contract like you know nobody,
And of course there's the the flag thing going back
(19:38):
a couple of weeks ago as well. Let me ask
you about Roethlisberger. My take on it was, look, I
I just kind of think Ben's one of these guys
loves a good compliment, right, everybody knows it. And last
year when he said, you know, I don't know, I'm
gonna have to review whether or not I want to
retire or not, that that's one of those more he
wants people to want. Everybody wants to be wanted. He
want to be wanted. Back that that was my takeaway.
(20:01):
A lot of NFL guys have said, no, that's not
what it is. It's that he really thought about retiring.
And yet this is what happens when you think about
Once you think about it, you are retired. You're a
retired Hall of Fame player. What's your take on Ben
roethlisberger struggles. Well, you know, a lot of times it
is the quarterback. You know, I've not been privy to
watch every one of the games. Of course, I was
(20:21):
watching the highlights, uh, you know, Paul Brown Stadium because
we were now at the Bengals game and watching the
pics and the you know, pick picks and stuff. So
I've yet to watch him in person. You know. We
do have the bye week coming up and then we
have to steal as the twenty seconds, um, so I
will watch more. And you know, for me, it's the
longer I watched the game. I mean, there's you know,
(20:41):
the guys are talented, but I love watching the body
of the language. I love watching how they interact, how
they used to how they're still doing it. And to me,
that says a lot about Okay, where are you as
far as steel the love for this game and really
wanting to lay it all on the line. And and
you know, I can watch that in and I love
watching that way, and not only while it on the field,
(21:03):
but in the sideline. And so I'm really curious to
hear or to see after hearing what he said, to
see him in live accident and see what's going on there.
Stug out Live show, Fox Sport Traded. That's the voice
of Anthony Munio is joining us in behalf of the
Built for Tough offensive Line in the week. This week
it's the Philadelphia Eagles. Um there. There's been a lot
(21:23):
of discussions about Carson Wentz and his evolution as a quarterback.
Having played in front of some really talented quarterbacks, when
do you know, when do you know, like, uh, we
saw the Bears debut, uh, Mitch Robinsky money and he
was okay. But like, look, golf was bad last year.
You give him a good offensive line this year, give
him a better play caller, better batist, still position, and
(21:44):
he appears to be a competent quarterback. Like having having
been in those huddles, been in those meeting rooms, been
in the locker room, when do you know if you
have a dude, well, you know, I was really fortunate.
I got here as a rookie and we had a
quarterback that has been around already for aven years. I
got to play for him another four he was an
m v P in his thirties, led us to a
(22:05):
Super Bowl. Kenny Anderson one of the most accurate quarterbacks, uh,
you know they ever played the game. I firmly believe
he should be in the Hall of Fame with what
he did for sixteen years. So he was already in
the league and I got in that huddle and I'm thinking,
I'm I'm playing with Kenny Anderson, man, and he's throwing
to Isaac Curtis and you know, all these touchdowns. But
the next guy, when he stepped in the huddle as
(22:28):
a rookie, I know myself. It was my fifth year
and I've been to a Super Bowl and I played,
you know, for Kenny Anderston. I said, this guy is ready.
I mean he might have had a big arm and
overthrown some guys early on, but Boomers Siason stepped into
our huddle at a rookie and I was like, oh, baby,
I love this guy. I want to go to battle
(22:50):
with this guy, and I want to, you know, play
with this guy because the passion, the knowledge, uh, you know,
the preparation. So I was fortunately the two quarterbacks I
played for, one was this pablished. I knew he was
already there. And then the next one man he stepped
into the huddle as a second round picked and said,
you know what I feel, I should have been a
first round. I wasn't. I'm a second round. But now
(23:11):
I'm starting, and I'm going to take the reins and
this is my offense. And we knew as veteran lineman
that he was the leader of our offense. So you
know right away, You just you just know, and then
and then and then the play has to has to follow,
and then the play happens because you know, you you're
learning a lot man. You know, n C double a
(23:31):
college football and NFL, two different cats. But the play comes,
but it's how are you gonna handle the huddle? How
how are you gonna command that respect? Are you or
aren't you? Are you guys gonna know that you're in
there for the long haul, that you you might not
have the physical knowledge yet, but it's gonna come, but
the mental is there. And I knew right away it
(23:51):
should it should happen right away, especially with these quarterbacks
that have played hopefully they've played to three years in
the college game, and there you being that guy, you know,
so hopefully they are not intimidated by guys that are,
you know, to to four to six eight years older
than them. They're the guy they were drafted to be
the guy, so hopefully they know that, and you want
(24:12):
to see that. Anthony, great stuff, man, Thanks so much
for joining us. All right, thank you very much, have
a great day. All right. That's Anthony Moonios, the Hall
of Famer, joining us, telling us that the Philadelphia Eagles
offense line second straight week the offensive line of the
week built by Ford f one fifty. I'll tell you
why Texas A and M and USA soccer the same thing.
(24:33):
But first let's get a kind of an update of
what's going on. I'm seeing the tart being taken off
the field at Grigly. So much mold in that city, right,
is that that what it is? Stand by the mold
in that city. There's a lot of great things about Chicago,
and sure there may be some downsides, but I think
Dusty Baker was a little maybe out of his element,
kind of crazy for a guy who managed to the
(24:54):
city to say that mold is a big problem in Chicago.
Never heard that one before. Well he's making an excuse
for Strassburg. Oh yeah, so tell me if I'm wrong,
if I got the story wrong. Right, Like yesterday before
the rain, before the rain, the rain out, he went
to Strasburg, was like, hey, do you want to pitch?
They're like, nah, I'm not feeling good. And so when
that story came out, they they asked him about it.
(25:15):
They're like, well, yeah, there's a little bit of something
going through the team. It might have been from the
change in temperature. It might have been from the mold
of all the moistures that that that about, right, yes,
But what was interesting was that Strasburg through yesterday. So
then they also used that as an excuse why they
were sticking with Tanner Rourke. But he didn't but he
actually didn't throw. He threw on Monday. So so yeah,
(25:38):
so it was a it was a they made up
a lot of stuff. I have no idea what the
truth is out of the Washington Nationals. There was just
a lot of stuff going on yesterday because even after
the rain delay. Dusty Baker said that Tanner Rourke was
going to be this guy. Steven Strasburg is going to
start today against Jake Kerry had a first pitch coming
(25:58):
up just after the top of the hour. In Game
four's the Covers are up to one of the best
of five series. Yankees An Indians wrap up their series
tonight with their Game five in Cleveland eight o'clock Eastern time.
It's Corey Kluger had home for the Tribe against the
Inky cc Sabathia John Ferrell lot of a job. The
Red Sox today fired their skipper after five seasons and
included a World Series title and three division titles, but
(26:19):
also two last place finishes and two early exits from
baseball's postseason. The Giants have suspended cornerback Dominic Rodgers. Crimarti
reports say DRC got into a heated exchange with that
coach Ben McAdoo yesterday at DRC decided to leave the team.
Today Giants are rolling five. They're in Denver on Sunday
night to face the Broncos Minnesota Timberwolves. A guard Andrew
(26:40):
Wiggins have a great on a five year extension worth
one hundred and forty eight million dollars, so Doug Wiggins
a guy who is going to get paid. Joel and Beat,
a part of that same draft class, got his extension
a couple of days ago, and now Andrew Wiggins locked
up with the Timberwolves. So did you watch fire? You're
watching USA soccer? Uh? Do you watch any of the
(27:01):
match at all? Um? I was with you pretty much
the whole time of what I watched back to the TV,
So I don't know. Yeah, No, I didn't really watch it. Yeah,
you know, I did not not into it. Now would
you have gotten into it if it was World Cup? Yeah? No,
definitely I wanted them to win. I'm not as invested
in it as other people. I just I ended up
sitting where I was because of where the chairs were.
(27:24):
So that probably tells you on how important it was
for me where I wasn't, you know, trying to angle.
I would turn around and get an update. But I
will say this not to sit on the fence about this.
I thought it was a foregone conclusion that they were
just going to win. Yeah. I think we all. I
think we all kind of did. Yeah. I actually like
there's so many these copa thinger thinger jiggers, and you're like,
I just just we're not already in. I kind of
(27:47):
think that's one of those deals to where you just thought,
we get the invitation the mail right right, like oh
d U s a because we we did were super
arrogant like that, like we just assume that are always
part of the party, and in all honesty, they kind
of should rig it, so we're part of the party.
It's really amazing that FIFA, in all of FIFA's brilliance
(28:09):
and genius, right um, in like how much they've been
on the take to begin with for who gets to
host this thing, and the fact is we still there's
an outside shot we may get it in in five
years anyway. I know it's supposed to go to Qatar, cutter,
but you know, let's see how that thing plays out, right.
(28:32):
So um, it's just interesting to me that how an
organization that has been so rife with so many scandals,
like not smart enough to understand it's really good for
business to have Team USA involved. Yes, yes, Why can't
they have like a free pass like one team I
(28:52):
think the host host countries. Okay, okay, how about a
second free pass for the United States. I'm I'm with
you again. We're that arrogant. We were like, dude, why
wouldn't you want us? We're awesome. You're like, you're not
that awesome. That's why we're like Texas A and M football.
So look, here's the positi here's the plus side for
(29:12):
Texas and M football. Unbelievably passionate fan base. Now it's
not it's not a fan base doesn't span the country
in terms of like, if you didn't go to A
and M, you're not really an A and M fan.
Whereas if you didn't go to Ohio State, you didn't
go to Michigan, and you didn't go to sc or
you didn't go to Oklahoma where you didn't go to Texas,
(29:36):
but you you kind of from around there, or fell
in love with Vince Young and it didn't go to Georgia,
but you were born in the state of Georgia, You're
you're dog. A and M doesn't have that, but A
and M has. Their fan base is ridiculously passionate, ridiculously passionate,
and in terms of location, they're the closest Power five
(30:00):
Conference school to the city of Houston, which is a
well spring for football talent. They've had talented teams in
the past. They've had some successful teams in the past.
They're incredibly well funded, right, great facilities, and yet if
you look at Texas A and M football's records for
(30:24):
the most part over the thirty thirty years of modern
day history, they're like conference play. They are. And it's
not for lack of trying with different coaches. They had
Jeane Stalin's who went on to win a national championship
at at Alabama. UH. Jackie Cheryl was probably their most success.
(30:44):
They had RC Slocum, who, of course said had one
undefeated season which they finished ranked eighth in the country.
But since that's in the last is that twenty one years?
Twenty one years, they've had exactly one excuse me to
double digit win season. They've had RC Slogan, they had
(31:05):
Dennis French and Dennis FRENCHI only one everywhere. He was
step really consistently at Texas A and M. Mike Sherman
came back from the NFL. He did win nine games
one year. How even Kevin Sumlin had a I think
he went undefeated at at Houston and Kevin Sumlan has
(31:26):
had one double digit They had two really good years
and so but hey, if you ask A and M
folks are like, we're one of the best, you know,
one best football programs in the country. Like you're asking me,
was like, start listing your top ten college football programs
s CE, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, Florida, Georgia. I mean, look,
I think text I think Tennessee gets way too much
(31:48):
discussion because there's I think there will be a lot
of players from the state of Tennessee because Nashville is
the biggest. Uh has had some of the most growth
of any city in the country. But right now it's not.
It's not the air. Tennessee gets a lot more discussed
than it should. But Oklahoma. I mean you kind of
go around the country and start in Florida State. You'd
(32:11):
even put Miami ahead of Texas and m in terms
of perception, national perception, Penn State, Stanford. But you asked
Texas m be like, Oh, we're that's us. That's that's
the US men's national team. We've never gotten to the
final four, have we We've never really broken through yet.
(32:32):
We have all the resources, we should have the best,
we should have the best of the best. The truth
is we don't. It's just like tech sa A M
rarely gets the best kids from the state of Texas. Right,
those kids go national or those kids go to Texas,
they get Texas M kids. They've done better with Kevin
someone just like pu Pula sitches better than maybe any
(32:53):
player we've ever had. But we've never had the best
athletes in the United States not to play soccer. Those
guys all play. Ask yourself in your high school, the
best athletes in your high school what sport they play?
Football or basketball, maybe baseball. I can't think of any
high school that I know of which the best high
(33:14):
school athletes. Just the best kids in your high school
play soccer. So I think there's a lot of tech,
say and M, which our expectations are through the roof.
And yet the fact is, you look historically and this
is kind of who we are. And because of our
arrogance and because look, we ran off Jurgen Klinsman because
(33:34):
he wanted to play young dudes, most of whom did
not grow up playing in the United States. And though
those young dudes maybe hadn't come through yet, it was
a long term play. There's a long term play. Well,
I guess we didn't trust the process, went back to
the old dudes yesterday that didn't work. Trinidad not the problem.
Tobago was. Tobago is a problem surrounded by big water,
(33:59):
huge huge water. I mean, do we lost the Trinidad
and Tobaggo, which is akin to LSU losing to who
they loosed to two weeks ago? The lost Detroit similar
and only if coach O was Bruce arians right. Come out? Well,
you know with Tigers with Tigers, with Tigers. With True Car,
you can find out what other people in the area
(34:20):
paid for the same car you're looking for new or
use visit True Car to enjoy more confident car buying experience.
The Browns have found their quarterback in the future. Real
news are fake news. By out next what True Car,
you can find out what other people in your area
paid for the same car you're looking for new or
used visit True Car to enjoy more confident car buying experience.
Doug Gotlim Show, Fox Sports Radio Golden State Warriors said
(34:43):
something which is uh well true which has people all
screwed up about it. Truth hurts. Truth hurts, and it's
not just because of their success against a certain player,
but at the way in which the league is in
fact moving we'll get to all of that upcoming. First,
(35:04):
Let's play game. Okay, this is game time on the
Doug gott Leave Show. All right, dude in Brow, what
do you got from me? My friend? Today on the
sum day, we had news fake news. All right, let's
see where we go with this. Real news are fake news, Doug.
(35:26):
The Browns are going back to de Shaan Kaiser as
their starter for week six after he was benched in
week five. That's real news. Wait wait, wait, going back
to him, Yes no, no, no, no, he's uh sorry,
he's he's gonna be on the bench. They're gonna start
Kevin Hodn. They're so yeah, no, I wanted to do
(35:47):
that because our drops are they're real and they're spectacular.
Or that's fake news and this one is no no, okay,
yes there we are. You are fake news. That's can
we just start this over again, you know, let's just
uh yeah, you're right, it is fake news. Kevin Hogan
is going to be the starter for the Browns in
week six against the Texans. See Doug, what happens is
(36:09):
sometimes I jumped the gun and tell you if you're
right or wrong, but I've got to wait for either
Terry Hatcher or Donald Trump, and so I was waiting
for them and it is fake news. The Deshan Kaiser
experiment now will include a benching in mid season in Cleveland. Um, yes,
it will include a Benji mid seasons. Yes, yes, correct, correct,
(36:31):
Just curious that Kevin Hogan is the guy that they
want to evaluate now, like Deshaun Kaiser was your second
round pick and you're likely going to pick at the
top five next year when I get all the information
you can, maybe it's just you Jackson wanting to try
to win a game. That I think he wants to
try and win a game. But I also think that, like,
look if Kevin Hogan is playing better played Kevin Hogan,
see how you know? Just like there's a reason that
(36:53):
Kaiser had slipped away Kaisers and let's see how Kaiser
handles adversity. Sure, but there is no way that you're
going into April choosing Sam Donald or Kevin Hogan. Why
because the Browns have done this for so long of
just making mistakes when they've got it. Heck, they traded
out of they could have taken Deshaun Watson instead of
they do the deal with the Texans, No question, but
(37:14):
would would this again? This This is the question that
it's like people like, well, they should have traded they
should have taken um, what's named Philadelphia. I my Carson
Carson Wentz, Like well, Carston Wentz would have gotten destroyed
last year behind that offensive line. Right, So, whoever's quarterback
is not gonna do well, let's see who does better?
Like this, I know we operate an assumption to Deshaun
(37:36):
Watson has to be the guy because he played an
other dame. He's the second round pick, and we thought
he'd be a first round pick. But like r G
three was the first round, picking Kirk Cousins was the
fourth round, picking Kirk Cousins is better. So sometimes the
coach who is the quarterback whisperer, who's the offensive coordinator
who becomes a head coach, wants to win a game
because he thinks one of the quarterbacks actually better, so
(37:57):
he's allowing him to take some first team ups. What
do they have to lose? They've already lost the first
five games. Uh, right now, to Shaun Watson may need
to stop and look and see how how everything else
is done. I don't disagree with this at all. I
am I'm completely opposite. I don't get it at all.
But that's the Browns for you. Real news are fake news.
(38:18):
It was reported yesterday that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had
a sprained a C joint and is non throwing shoulder.
A day later, Brady was back at practice and Doug
is good to go for Sunday's game against the Jets.
Real news are fake news. Real news, they're real and
they're spectac Yeah, nothing to worry about at all, Patriots fans.
Tom Brady did have that m r I yesterday. It
(38:40):
is a sprained a C joint, but back practicing today
and yes, should go for week six. M almost But yeah.
The big thing here with with Brady though, is um
how he recovers from injuries at this age? Right does it?
It doesn't affect him long term. Let's we'll see the
forty Niners take on the Redskins on Sunday. Real news
(39:00):
are fake news, forty Niners said. Coach Kyle Shanahan said
that when he was an assistant on the Redskins in twelve,
the team plan on taking r G three with their
first pick, and then with their fourth round pick, they
were going to take Russell Wilson. That was the original plan,
is that real news are fake news there and the spectacular. Yeah,
that's what Shannahan actually said today. So Kirk Cousins wasn't
(39:22):
even option A in that fourth round. Russell Wilson, of course,
was taken to the third round by the Seahawks in twenties.
Shall also be pointed out, though, that that Shanahan was
somebody who has been a proponent of Cousins since he
was with the Skins. Matter of fact, when he was
nearly named the head coach of the New York Jets,
his game plan was to bring Kirk Cousins with him.
Real news are fake news, Doug. A Florida man tried
(39:43):
to drive through a flooded swamp with his Toyota Corolla
instead of just driving a few blocks around that swamp.
That sounds like real news, you are fake No, the
man actually tried to jump a twenty ft canal. So
so it was did he say, hey, hey, I saw
this on dukes have is there a road outsigned? He
may have said it, because witnesses say he actually got
(40:05):
out of his car, surveyed the distance, and then backed
up and tried to make the twenty ft jump. Um,
He's okay the Corolla total. This is game time on
the Duck Gottlieb Show. M Uh see, I saw this
one Florida man sets himself on fire after the Dallas
(40:27):
Cowboys lost. Why do all these stories come out of Florida?
Why is it Florida. One thing is Florida's like a confluence. Right,
there's the Miami is not really the South, but the
rest of the state is kind of the South. Uh.
There's a lot of stuff going on in Florida. The
Nationals and Cubs about to start Game four in fifteen minutes.
It's bizarre how we got to having Steven Strassburg start.
(40:49):
We'll get there next. What up? It's Duck Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. So Steven Strasburg is uh about to
take the ump? I would take the bump for the
Washington Nationals. Is the highest paid player for the Nats.
Of course, we know Bryce Harper soon, at least not
(41:10):
this off season, next off season gonna want to get paid,
whether he's stays in d C or goes elsewhere. Kind
of seems like right field has taken in New York,
so it doesn't feel like New York will be a destination,
but maybe Chicago, maybe l A, maybe Boston will obviously
be others who who want the slugging superstar. But Strassburg
(41:31):
apparently had initially passed on pitching today because he hadn't
been feeling well, and Dusty Baker, Dusty Baker Catt was, well,
you know, he's been under the weather. It might be
the mold this time of year, meaning it's look, it's cold,
it's yucky, it's moist, it's October. I just I can't
(41:59):
possibly fathom somebody going to a guy who purports himself
to be an ace, the guy who's agent has told
the world he's one of the great pictures in baseball
and going like thanks, no, thanks not, I'll give it
a try and see what I got skip and look
if the flu is really bothered me, come get me. No,
(42:24):
not not feeling it. So they were gonna go with Trevor.
Trevor who who right, Like, if I told you to
name the Washington Nationals starters, I'm like, hey, named the
Washington Nationals starting pictures, you'd go, I know Max Turser,
(42:49):
I know Steven Strasburg, and then Geo Ginzastin, who's the
fourth Tanner Wark Rourke is their fourth starter. Tanner who
Tanner Rourke Uh? Tanner Rourke been in the league for
four years kind of innings eater grinder Uh didn't have
(43:11):
a great year four point six seven e r A.
But he's their fourth best starter. Like somebody comes to
you and says, hey, do you want to take the
ball or not? Like suser can go in game five?
Can you go in game four? Nah? Why? Now he's
(43:31):
gonna pitch And apparently he's feeling up to it, right,
but I I kind of think he got guilted into
doing it. That's just an awful look. And and for
a for a starting pitcher. Look, my my experience has
always been has always been that no matter how bad
(43:53):
I'm feeling, when I play a sport, I feel better.
Right when I'm feeling sick, I go work out, opens
up the cap hlarious, you feel better? Correct now? In
baseball kind of like in basketball, because everybody touching, everybody
can touch the ball, you do run the risk of
dudes getting sick. And like, if you're really feeling if
you really have the flu, the one thing you are
concerned about is will everybody else get the flu? Plus
(44:16):
you know you can now go to your mouth with
blowing your hands to get warm all that. Like, I'm
not a germaphoe, but I do know how germs are passed.
And it's not like you can not You can go
out there to second base, or you're a catcher and
you could sit there and you can have that that
pure l. Right, hold on, hold on, time out. I
need some pure l. Just put them on second base.
(44:37):
Nobody's getting here anyway. Strasburg is dealing right. Just pure
l is an elite, a foreign substance to put on
a baseball. Well, what a bad look for Stephen Strasburg.
What a bad look coming off a ten strikeout performance
against the Cubs where you gave up only three hits
to earned runs. That's a bad look. The great news
(45:01):
is that he is in fact pitching, and then he'll
be able to eliminate any of this. But just the
excuse of the ads the mold. You don't think Cubbs
fans will be wearing masks to to to? Uh? Do
you make fun of the mold comment? Do you what
are you gonna say? Music? Do you think this is
one of those stories that only becomes a big deal
(45:23):
based off of like the way media covers teams in
today's day and age. I'm just surprised this isn't a
bigger story. Like right now we're covering the uh, the
fact that Dallas Cowboys had a meeting with Jerry Jones,
like we haven't really been talking about, but I'm sure
lots of other people are telling they had a meeting
players only meeting with Jerry Jones, and the players haven't
(45:47):
said what it's in regards to UH and oh yeah,
by the way, I will point this out in Jerry
Jones defense, he didn't say if you kneel before the flag,
you will be suspended or you won't play. He said
if you're is respectful to the flag. There's a very
fine distinction in that, very fine distinction in that. But
(46:07):
nonetheless we're covering that like that's not even a sports story,
Like that's a politics and almost almost pop culture story
more than anything else. This is an actual sports story.
Stephen Strossper is the number one overall pick. Remember they
chose to not pitch him in the playoffs a couple
of years ago because they were worried about his pitch count.
Then the next year he comes back and he has
(46:27):
to have Tommy John surgery and then he's not fully
back and he signs a long term extension with the team.
The team has never gotten out of the division around
of the playoffs, in spite of the fact they have
an immense amount of talent and high salaries, like this
is a big and they're in Chicago and fighting off
elimination in a rainy, sloggy, yucky day, to which if
(46:49):
you're an ace, if you're a stud, you go a skip.
Give me the ball. I like every picture, and you
ever know, they're like you can't even ask them if
they want the ball, Like you have to manage them.
That was the whole thing with with Pedro Martinez and
Grady Little, Right is he hit the hundred pitch mark
Grady Little, He's shaking everybody's hands. He put on the jacket.
(47:11):
Then Grady Little said, do you have anything left? And
every dude if worth his solids, like yeah, I can
go another. Ain't sure I'm gonna attend in it. It's
like guys with the woman. I go again, I'm fine,
by right, that's a guy. It's a guy thing. And
for Strassburg to go like, nah, I'm not feeling good
(47:33):
kind of moldy, like what so, I don't think it's
because of how this I do. I think it's because
how the stories like, yes, look, if you said he's
violently ill, it's coming out both ends. People like whoa, Okay, Okay,
he's been getting i VS. That's part of the stories
that he's been getting i VS. He had flu. Why
(47:55):
can't anybody just have the flu? He had flu like symptoms.
Why can anybody just go like he's got the flu um?
I also just mean from the perspective of like it
seems like I would say, maybe like before Twitter social media,
where you kind of just had like maybe one or
two beat writers per team, this would be the type
of thing where like Dusty Baker goes to Strassburg like, hey,
(48:17):
how are you feeling. He's like, man, I've been rough
the past couple of days, And then Dusty Baker is like,
all right, well, let's just see how it goes. Instead,
everything gets leaked and there's so many people after this information.
It's like, Okay, he's not good. Now the manager doesn't
know if he can pitch. Okay, I think he's better.
Oh he pitched yesterday. Oh he didn't pitch like the
way all the information just gets leaked in real time,
it makes it seem like it's a complete debacle instead
(48:40):
of just like a holding pattern. No, it's a it's
a debacle. And and look, part of it could have
been helped by Dusty. But I also think that there's
a chance that Dusty knew exactly what he was saying
when he said, hey, look, he ain't been feeling that good.
And maybe it's the mold, you know, where he puts
the pressure on, Like, are you kidding me? Is that
is that really why you're you're not gonna take them
(49:01):
out today? I look, I don't know. Trey Turner hasn't
gotten a hit yet. He gets on base, everything changes.
Bryce Harper did hit the massive home run, but he's
hitting one sixties seven. Daniel Murphy's not hitting. They're not hitting.
The every big thing is they ain't hit. They got
all these dudes, Murphy, Zimmerman, Harper, Worth, Trey Turner. Trey
(49:21):
Turner gets on and he's going against Jake Carrietta, who
hasn't been great this year. But if you go back
to the previous years, total stud and a guy who
traditionally gets better as the year goes on. So I'm
fast that, yes, that would always be, that would be
my default. And like, look, Strassburg, I do think that
(49:41):
players know themselves best, like if you have an on
his conversation. So some of this is and how the
how it all came out, But Dusty said like he
wouldn't field good. We went to him and they didn't
want and he didn't want to go, and they're like, well,
on second thought, he does want to go. I just
I don't under stand in the makeup of I don't
(50:01):
I have a tough time with that one. Um. I
think we're more used to pictures always wanting to not
just pitch but also stay out there. Yeah, Like, I
know you'll probably remember this since we're both Angel fans.
Like when Matt Harvey Matt Harvey two years ago, right
was that two years ago in the in the World
series where Matt Harvey wanted the ball on short rest.
(50:25):
I wanted to stay out there. You know, I'm the
Dark Knight and he just didn't have it when he
stayed out there. What are you gonna say? I was
gonna say, as both of us are Angel fans. John
Lackey used to always have this problem with Mike Sosha,
and they would like he would that's who lack is,
right exactly. Yeah, but it was like never wanted to
come out of the game ever got bases loaded. Yeah. No,
(50:47):
of course I like coming out of games at all.
And one of the reasons that I I was so
screwed up in college was because my college coach would
take me out when I missed shots. So in my mind,
like coming out of a game was the worst thing
on so I just wouldn't shoot. I could be petrified
to shoot because I just that's the only way I
could come out of a game as if I missed
a shot, Whereas my teammates were like, dude, we can't
(51:10):
win without you. Just if he takes you out of
puts you back in, keep walking, don't look at him,
keep walking. Gotta play it all right, So that things
underway at Wrigley Field. Have a rain field day, Arietta
against Strasburg, Game four, Cubs win and the Gnats would
be eliminated. Trade Turner with a week little flyball caught
(51:32):
by second base out in right field to start the game,
so he continues to be hitless in this season. Tom
Berducci joins the show next. I'll ask him about that
Strasburg story, and nobody knows more about the insides of baseball.
It's like, is this who Strasburg is? Is he one
of those everything has to be right? Or to Dusty
blow this thing up by by making a big deal
(51:54):
And what happens in the Gnats don't win again again? Plus,
is it's your Joe Girardi's last stand they lose? Is
he done? Verducci joins us next. But first, life insurance

I thought this was an interesting story. Um Isaiah Thomas
is baffled why he was dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Boston is going to be all love, he told Sports Illustrated.
(53:41):
I might not ever talk to Danny Danny again. That
might not happen. I'll talk to everybody else, but what
he did, knowing everything I went through. You don't do that, bro,
That's not right. I'm not saying f you. But every
team in this situation comes out a year or two
later and says we made a mistake. That's what they'll
say to None of this made any sense. It doesn't
(54:05):
make any sense. I'm still asking what the hell happened.
It's a trade you make in NBA two K, it's
not a trade you make in real life. Um, Boston
is gonna be good. They've got really good players and
a great coach, but takes more than talent. They lost
the heart and soul. So I I just like, look,
it's pretty obvious that Isaiah Thomas is like took it
(54:26):
really personal and it's really just business. Okay. Uh my
my agent actually has has a great saying for this.
And any time that you think of things and you say, well, wait,
as a human being, who WHOA these are not your friends, right?
(54:47):
They're just not. They They over your house all the time,
they help raise your kids, say they part of your
life on a daily basis. I like, they're not people.
Some of these people people that make these decisions they
have they have their own family, they have their own friends.
It is business. You can have a very cordial business relationship,
(55:10):
but that's just business. And I don't think it's an
NBA two K trade. I think the reality is that, uh,
they probably maxed out what they could get out of
that current group. And he's not wrong. They know they
lost their heart and soul. They know they lost kind
of the guts of that team. And it wasn't just
with him, Like he wasn't the only piece that they
(55:32):
lost in their various trades from last year. Like let's
let's not let's not forget that last year's Boston Celtics
were comprised completely differently. They lost Avery Bradley, who was
their best on ball defender. They lost Jay Crowder, they
lost Kelly oh lennok Um. So they have eleven new pieces.
(55:54):
They know what they were doing. But they had held
on and held on and held onto all these picks
with the idea that they would only use them if
it's something special. And I felt like Kyrie Irving was
that something special. Plus I say, Thoma's gonna get paid
and he's coming off a hip injury and playing Games
three in Games four, Like I understand the pain that
(56:15):
comes with leaving a place to which you felt like
you should have been. Uh, you should have felt more
at home. I get that. But NBA players they talk
about it all the time when they sign a contract man,
this is business. It ain't personal, right, and then a
move is made that is in fact for business and
(56:37):
they take it personally. They're not gonna talk to Danny Ainge. Okay.
Um I saw this other story though, from the NBA.
NBA season is today Wednesday? Some reason I got my days? Screw?
Do you ever do that? We're like, what day of
the week? Is it? No idea? I don't know. Um.
(57:02):
I saw this one though that I thought was really
interesting that the Golden State Warriors have said that Russell
Westbrooks style is one that's easy to guard. Now here's
what Here's what happens, right, is that when you read
these quotes, you're like, oh, it's so easy to guard.
But that's because they just outscore you. Or you read
(57:26):
it and you think this is uh, this is Kevin
Durant telling people, you know, then fighting back for Kevin Durant. Um.
This comes from The Low Post, which is Zach Lows
Weekly podcast. Jack McCallum's new book, The Golden Days Late
Jerry West Lakers, Steps, Warriors and California Dreamers who reinvented basketball,
(57:49):
about the Warriors, a bunch of anonymous Warriors talking about
Russell Westbrook and how they don't fear Russ, how Kevin
Durant left partly because of us, How russ Is playing
style is so easy for them to fad and like
cake to them. I mean, how easy would that be? Uh,
this is my boy, Ryan Russilo. We have to worry
(58:09):
about one guy. I've talked to the Warriors about this
kind of stuff. Zach Loos said. What's in Jack's book
is what they say if you asked them about Russ
Now he shot sent from me on the arc, even
though he shot on threes. Uh in games outside of
(58:33):
against the Warriors. I don't think it's as much just
about guarding one guy as guarding the ball that stops right.
The San Antonio Spurs were probably the first to really
embrace the idea of having a ball movement offense. They
also embraced the three point shot, driving, kicking, driving, kicking,
(58:55):
constantly moving the ball from side to side. That is
the hardest thing to guard. There's a reason that the
NBA has so many teams have gone away from the
old days of ISO ball. Now there still is uh.
The Calves still use it. And the Calves were fairly
(59:16):
easy to defend in terms of the lack of ball movement.
The problem was they had Kyrie Irving. The problem was
they had Lebron James. If you helped Lebron James, he's
so big, strong and could and the good enough past,
you could find guys and they surrounded him with shooters.
So against. The flaw to the Calves was they built
the perfect offense around Lebron James right. Put shooters all
(59:38):
around Lebron. If you double him, he finds him. If
you don't, he scores. The flow of the Cavs was
that those guys that could really shoot couldn't play defense
at all. The flaw to the Golden to the Oklahoma
City Thunder was not only did you not have ball movement,
so you had some of that is so stuff, but
(59:59):
you had guys. He didn't have to guard defensively. You
could just pack it in and guard Russell Westbrook with
two guys, card Kevin Durant with two guys, sometimes with
three guys and Dare and Andre Robertson to shoot the basketball. Um.
I think what's most amazing about it is how so
(01:00:21):
many NBA guys seems so tough right and yet emotionally,
when somebody says something about them that they don't like,
they react in such defensive fashion. Same thing happened James Harden.
Kevin McHale said done. Thinks he's a great player, thinks
Chris Paul will be really good for him, but doesn't
(01:00:42):
think he's a leader. James Harden lost his mind. So look,
we've had Harden loses his mind. I'm sure Russell Westbrook
will lose his mind. And Isaiah Thomas loses his mind
because he was traded. He doesn't want to talk to
Danny Ainge. Let me quickly go to Dan Buyer at
you in update and uh, Tom Verducci is gonna join us.
(01:01:03):
We'll get you ready for Yankees Indians. Does Joe Girardi
have to win to keep his job? It's been ugly
in the Bronx. Is there going to be in Cleveland
to night? Corey Kluber got blown up in game and
game game two? Uh, quickly though, what's going on that
knats Clubs game not much so far, zero zero bottom
of the first inning. It's game for Steven Strassburg is
(01:01:24):
on the mound for the Nationals. Cubs having Jake Arietta
on the hill. A foggy, overcast day with some precipitation falling,
but not enough to make anything stop in Game four.
Of course, this was supposed to play. He played yesterday,
but the game postponed until today. Yankees and Indians playing
at eightiestern time tonight. C C Sabathia going up against
Corey Kluber. Winner gets the Astros and the Alcs. Houston
(01:01:47):
has set the start of their rotation for the American
League Championship Series. Dallas Kaiko goes in Game one. That's
out Friday. Justin Verlander will pitch in Game two for Houston.
The John Farrell era in Boston is over. Red Sox
today fired Farrell after five seasons after some thought processes.
To me, I thought that it was the appropriate time
to make a change for the betterment of the organization
and move forward. And for me, I think at this
(01:02:10):
point sometimes change can be better, and that's why we've
decided to move forward with the change. And that's Red
Socks president, Dave don Browski, and Doug before you talked
with Tom Verducci about the playoffs and the Ferrell move. Today,
the New York Giants has spending corner Dominique Rodgers Cromarty.
Kevin Hogan named the brown starting quarterback for Sunday's game
against the Houston Texans. And Cowboys players did meet with
(01:02:31):
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones today after Jones said that he
would bench the players if they disrespected the anthem. Nozy
Gilliat or Dak Prescott have made available to the media
today in Dallas after that meeting with the Cowboys owner.
All right, thanks Dan. Tonight on Fox Sports One, Game
five a l DS Yankees Indians number Indians row best
record in the American League last year went to games
(01:02:52):
seven on Fox in the World Series, and the Yankees
are in fact the Yankees. That game starts at seven
thirty Eastern time, and you'll hear the voice of time
and see the face of Tom Verducci patrolling the sidelines.
Tom joins us on the Doug Gatlin Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. Uh is Girardi managing for his job tonight?
That's a good question. I don't know whether he wants
(01:03:14):
to come back or whether he will be invited back,
but obviously a lot will depend on win or lose tonight. Um.
You know, I actually think Doug that when the ball
gets the first pitch is thrown by Kluber tonight, there
is more pressure not on the Yankees or Girardi, but
on the Cleveland Indians, tremendous amount of pressure. This is
a team that set up their rotation at Corey Kluber
pitching this game on his normal risk. The entire rotation
(01:03:37):
of the series was set up around that. Uh, the
hundred wins of the regular season, the twenty two game
winning streak home field, last year's World Series. Everything is
riding on this game for for Cleveland, and I think
the Yankees in the position and I think they've actually
rallied behind Joe Girardi after that team to fiasco that
the Yankees have the momentum going forward in the Indians
are just trying to hang on and avoid will be
(01:04:00):
a really crushing loss for this organization given their season
this year, their pitcher on the mound, and their season
last year. Yeah, I'm like, what what happened to Andrew Miller?
Like I know, it was the knee right that that
that he struggled with location because of the knee. And
the numbers are still very good this year, and he
only gave He's only given up two hits, but one
(01:04:21):
was a home run. But there doesn't seem to be
the same fear factor of Andrew Miller this year as
opposed to last year. I'm wrong to think that. Uh No,
I think you're right. I think that misplaced fastball to
Greg Bird. Really think that that the mirror of Andrew Miller,
that he could come in and just the world would
stop every time he got to the mound, whether there
was a righty or lefty. Now you're in a situation
(01:04:42):
where it's not just Bird taking him out, but the
fact that there's a matchup mid to late game with
Judge and or Sanchez at the plate. Frank ConA has
shown he's gonna go with Joe Smith over Miller, and
those guys are hitless in their careers against Joe Smith.
So I get it. So it's some days that protects
Miller from those three inning or two inning out things,
(01:05:03):
but in other ways it tells you that, yeah, he's
not exactly the same beast. Listen, I still think he's
the best for releaf pitcher in baseball. You will see
him tonight at some point. Um. But yeah, because of
that knee injury. Although he told me he thought he
threw the ball really well the other night. There was
really one bad pitch, but he said he's still great.
Why won't Why won't Girardi use Holiday instead? He's us
(01:05:24):
Headley who does not have a hit in the series. Yeah,
and now it's the point where Matt has just been
on the bench too long. He's not gonna play, and
um Ellsbury's going at d H to night. Uh yeah,
you knew coming in without a left handed starter there
weren't going to be alive at bats for Holiday. And
then when Miller came in the game one, I think
it was when Bird was up. He stayed with Bird
(01:05:45):
against Miller, actually left HEAs have slightly better chance against Miller.
So now all of days at the point where he's
got so much rossdom him. He's a guy with a
bigger swing. I don't know how useful he is Yankees
at this point. I thought coming in he would play
a role because I think he hits good pitching. He's
in big spots. Uh, He's a threat to hit the
ball out of the park against good relief sitching. But
now I just wonder how useful he can be without
(01:06:08):
without playing time. Yeah, it's crazy. What's It's really crazy?
What's happened? He started out with such a bang in
New York and so well respected by guys like Judge,
but then he had that allergic reaction and then he
never really recovered from it and just had a disastrous
second half of the season. Tom Verducci joining us from
Fox Sports. Fox Sports One's coverage of Yankees Indians starts
tonight at seven thirty Eastern time on Fox Sports one.
(01:06:31):
Um Red Sox make a change where John Farrell, who
had been their pitching coach, left, goes to Toronto, comes
back as their manager, wins the division two different times.
He is ousked. It was it. It simply wasn't liked
wasn't well liked enough in the clubhouse. Well, you know,
Dave Nembrowski, the president, really left it up to everybody's
guesswork by saying that it really matter how much far
(01:06:52):
he went in the postseason, that they were gonna make
a change. What was it that would make them run
out the guy the only manager in Red Sox Street
to went back to back division titles. Uh. Yeah, I
think that was part of it. I think that was
the only thing that David Price incident with the media
had way too much shelf life, and it should have
had he didn't stop that in the bud. Uh to me,
(01:07:13):
I think I'll go back to David Ortiz. This is
more fallout from not having David Ortiz there because that
team could not hit the ball on the ballpark, which
you have to do in today's game, last in the
league and home runs. They weren't an exciting team to
watch because of that. And I say that they do
have individual exciting players, but nobody with the personality or
firepower David Ortiz or local TV ratings were way down
(01:07:35):
some of the biggest drops this year. Uh, that's not
on David and browns on John Farrell. That's on the
way they put this team together. It's a big hole
without Ortiz. So and don't forget, Dombrowski did not hire
John Farrell, so he didn't have anything invested in hiring him.
So you know, probably it'll be Alex Cora or Brad Alsmus.
Those would be My guess is obviously. Nebraski hired Ausmus
(01:07:56):
in Detroit. He's familiar with him. He's a New England guy.
But they gotta find himself a power hitter in that lineup.
Good young players, but not enough power. Let's let's go
over to the Nationals. We're watching them. It's zero zero
in the top of the second inning. Is uh, looks
like that's Jason Worth on the bench not up at that.
It's so hard to tell with everybody having a beard
and long hair, who's actually up on you when you're
(01:08:17):
watching from a distance. Um, all right, help me with
this Strassburg thing. Right like he was under the weather.
So he said no thanks on Game four, and then
after it came out he said, okay, I guess I'll
pitch in game four. Is this is this on Dusty
for letting the cat out of the bag or that
that became very public and became very very weird before
the game started in Strasbourg was on the hill. Yeah,
(01:08:39):
I agree with you. This is on the entire organization
and they have been kings of drama. They don't handle
these things well. You know, Dusty goes out there. First
of all, he either was a mistaken or didn't know
the day that Strasburg actually threw his bullpen. He was
wrong about that. Then twenty four hours before the game,
he rules out Strasburg because he's ill, when everybody can
see Strasburg on the field that day. Now, all right,
(01:09:01):
you may be ill, but if you were that incapacitated,
you wouldn't be on the field to be ruled out
for an elimination game when you're on normal rest. None
of it added up, And now here they turn around
and say, oh, yeah, we are giving him the ball.
So there's been a lot of drama around this team
postseason's past. We all know about their history not being
able to win big games. The bottom line is they've
got the right guy of the mount. He had to
(01:09:22):
start this game, There's no doubt about it. The way
they arrived at that he I thought was embarrassing and
mishandled from top down. Um. I kind of feel like
the understated story of the postseason so far was the
Dodgers dominance and sweeping of the Diamonbacks. Considering how well
the Diamondbacks have played against him, Like I know that,
(01:09:42):
you know, Like we'll believe it when we see it.
When they finally get to the World Series. They gets
past the Cubs to get past the nets. But like, look,
people were freaking out in l A about having to
play the Diamondbacks, and the Dodgers moved on without some
you know, like the Kershaw gave up four home runs,
but they had a big enough lead, like they did
shrink in the spotlight of playing the Diamondbacks. Am I
(01:10:02):
wrong to think that all this other drama has taken
away from the Dodgers actually taking care of business. Yeah,
that in the late night starting times where that you know,
people on the East Coast aren't plugged into it. But
you're right, they were dominant against the team that has
handled them. Now, don't forget that was during that three
or four week period there where the Dodgers are scuffling,
and I called it the most overrated, over analyzed losing
(01:10:25):
streak that I've ever seen. That was a team up
by about twenty one games, like having a huge lead
in the fourth quarter, it just you know, emptying the
bench and you know, garbage time basically. And they got
it together at the end of the year. But the
way they played against the diving Backs, to me was
so impressive. Number One, I thought divers through the ball
great and number two, the way that their line up
just completely wore out Granky and the Arizona pitchers was unbelievable.
(01:10:50):
The GM Parhan Tahiti said it was the greatest display
of grinding out a fact that he's ever seen. I
don't know if it's ninety eight Yankees or oh for
Red Sox quality, but it was impressive to see a
team that's known for being you know, let's face at
glamor boys in l A to have that blue collar,
grinded out mentality. I mean, that was great playoff baseball
(01:11:10):
that they played. So I'm with you, man, I think
they're the team to beat in the National League, where
the Cubs or Washington the Dodgers are gonna be a
really tough out. Who would they rather play. It's a
good question. I think maybe they want to play the
Cubs to get another shot at them after last year.
I think the Nationals when they're pitching starting pitching is on,
(01:11:31):
They've got a chance to beat you with starting pitching.
I wouldn't say that about the Cubs right now, because
unless they're an area of being something of a question mark,
so uh to me, I would always go look at
the team that has the lesser of the starting pitching.
And maybe I'm disrespecting the Cubs more than I should,
but I think that much when the National starters are
(01:11:52):
on their handful, I tend to agree that you mentioned
grinding out of bats. You mentioned that you have to
hit the ball to the ballpark. I've told people all
season long that if you haven't paying attention to baseball,
everybody's changed their approach. And though the home run numbers
are historic now, I've ever seen this many home runs
in a Major League Baseball season. The games are longer
and the lulls are longer as well. I mean, it's
(01:12:12):
it can be boring four hours and you're just waiting
for somebody to hit it out of the park. Um.
I know it's an issue within circle Major League Baseball circles.
How do you think they fix it, how do you
think they address it. That's a great question, Doug, and
I think you're absolutely dead on that. The game now
has been about home runs and relief pitching. You're seeing
that in the postseason. It gets exacerbated now because every
(01:12:34):
pitch is so important. Last year, for instance, in the postseason,
teams that didn't hit a home run, went three and
twenty two. So those old days, and we talked about,
you know, grinding out at bats, bumping the guy over,
playing small ball. Forget it. You're not gonna get four
or five hits together against pitching in today's game. You
gonna try to hit the ball on the ballpark and
change the game there. So waiting for those moments, you're
(01:12:54):
gonna see a ton of strikeouts and long at bats.
I think next year we have to sit see pitch
clocks and a limit on visits to the mound. I
know postseason is different, so maybe you can change the
rule slightly for postseason play to allow a little more
time in between pitches. But we have to move the
games along. This is the only entertainment industry that is
giving our society less action over a greater period of time.
(01:13:18):
That's the inverse of everything else that's happening in our
world today. Baseball needs to address that. Not just for
next year, but if you want this next generation of
fans to do your fans twenty years from now, you
better change the game a little bit. I tend to
agree with you. My my two ideas are you gotta
move to some of those fences back to where they
where they were before you try to generate the more
home runs. And when you have relief pictures, I'm sorry,
(01:13:42):
but you have you have a um. You have a
mound out there in the in the uh in the bullpen.
If you check in your pitching, I don't need to
wait for you to to to warm up. No other
sport has you warm up on the hold on, I'm
not loose yet. I gotta get loose first. Can you
imagine that NFL you changed quarterbacks and they stopped the
game for the guy to throw a couple of passes
(01:14:04):
to his wide receivers to warm up. Or NBA the
guy comes off the bench and he gets, you know,
two minutes to warm up. Come on. They do it,
and they do it in between innings too, maybe one
or two pitches. But we don't need to give these
guys eight pitches up that they've been warming up fifteen minutes.
Good question, Tommy, do a great job to look forward
to the cover side. That's Fox Sports one seven thirty
Eastern Time, Yankees Indians. A winner, winner goes on, loser
(01:14:29):
goes home. Thanks so much, tom you go do Chris
Carter called out Ben Roethlisberger. I'll tell you what he said.

with him. Next, what True Car? You can find out

a ball uh as close to a home run as
(01:15:14):
you will see at wrigley Field, only wind blowing in
at Wrigley Field. Have you guys been to Wrigley Field? Ramos,
you've been there, Ramos, you're pressing buttons. I'm sorry I
broke your concentration there, John, I have been there, not
for a game, but just on the outside of Rigley
Field because it wasn't baseball season, so we couldn't go in.
But yes, I have been to I guess that county.
(01:15:37):
I guess I think yeah, I mean yeah by letter
of the yeah, spirit of the new that's like, have
you ever been to uh Minnesota? Like, well, you know,
I had a layover at the airport, Like, well, that's
technically you're in the state of Minnesota. But right, like
(01:16:01):
you stop in Salt Lake on Delta, that's not really
going to visit the state of Utah. But I was
actually outside of this, like literally outside of the stadium,
Like I walked around the stadium, right, but that's not
going into Wrigley for a game, No, Doug, I have not.
I got one step closer. Is this any better? I
bought tickets and was going to the Cubs game at
(01:16:24):
Wrigley and then it got rained out, so that I
just hung out at Wrigleyville the whole time. Wait, he
got rained out, so he just got drunk. That's the
most Cubs story ever. That's that's but I at least
had tickets to go, so I was a little bit
closer to going than John Ramos. Exact, you had the
intentions to goe intentions to go. First day of our honeymoon.
(01:16:46):
I went to to Wrigley. No, I've always We had
a couple of days we're supposed to fly to Italy
for the first team I was playing with, and um
we went to Chicago and went to a Cubs game.
That's when Sammy was big Knrif Jr. Played against him,
he's playing for this and Sunny Reds is Sunday Night baseball.
And Sammy threw us a ball. Although there's a little
six year old girl that has signed up, like a
(01:17:07):
couple of seats down, say it's my six birthday. We
throw me a ball, And I was like, I can't
be the guy that holds onto the balls. It's like,
here you go, a little kid, a little kid. Um.
So yeah, I've been to regularly several times. We used
to have a one of my previous stops. We used
to do a a yearly like with all of our
(01:17:27):
all of our clients who would do UM a night
at Wrigley where we would watch the game from one
of the rooftops. It was great, but the game does
go on. You know. I don't even pay attention. That wind.
That wind is the wind is real there. It is
in the spring and in the fall like that is
totally different than the sun when everybody just drinking beer
(01:17:49):
hanging out. Now that that wind gets m Dan, have
you you've been Reguley, haven't you are, Wisconsin guy? But yeah,
well since I haven't been there since I redid it. Yeah,
it's probably been ten years now. I've mostly sat in
the bleachers when I was there. I've I've sat behind
(01:18:10):
first base a couple of times, but I've mostly been
to the bleachers. The bleachers are totally redone now completely redone. Um.
Bullpens are crazy too with the screens now. Yeah, it's
weird because because the bullpens forever, we're right there next
to you know, third right beyond thro on first base
and so much part of play. And now they're gone.
And I'll be honest with you, up until the playoffs,
(01:18:31):
I didn't know that. I didn't know that. I just
didn't like I watched Cubs gaff and not like every game,
and I didn't pay attention to like, hey, what happened
to the And then they explained it's like, oh now
they have the video cameras as well. It looks like
they're pitching in a garage, which but again, like to me.
That's the I'm okay. It's like I told Tom Ferducci,
(01:18:52):
like all right, like you have a warm up area,
Like hitters don't get a chance to warm up. They
come out, they don't go. I got to go hold on, Like,
can you throw a couple of me? Take a couple
of All right, go ahead. Why do pictures get a
chance to they walk? Jason Hayward, why are you walking?
Jason Hayward got a hole in his wing. I guess
that you got two out you get to the picture. Yeah,
(01:19:14):
let's find out. Now they would only slightly better. He
does have good numbers against Strassburg. That that's one reason why.
But only slightly better than a picture in terms of
a hitter. Uh uh. Chris Carter said this in regards
to Ben Roethlisberger. Ben's a cry Ben's an attention seeker.
He's been this way for a long time. People with
his injuries. Now, Ben, you just talked about the deep ball.
(01:19:36):
Another thing that Ben does a special is by time
in the pocket. Now, Ben is a warrior. He will
sit in there and get hit. But also after the game,
Ben will let you know how many injuries he's got. Oh,
they had to shoot me up for this one. Oh,
I didn't think I was gonna be able to play.
Now we've been covering being really close for a long time,
so this is something that we know. This is not new.
(01:19:58):
This locker room they do how a problem. I don't
believe it's with the quarterback and what he said. They
got a number of problems because their money. They paid
the wide receiver. All right, he's the highest paid wide receiver.
He's done what he wanted to do on the field.
Off the field the Facebook live video, tail Bell has
been a high performer. He hadn't got paid. The quarterback
(01:20:20):
talked about quitting last year, so those are real issues.
Tom Brady is saying I want to play five more
years because wife says he should quit. Ben said last year,
I'm thinking about quitting. So don't come back and tell
me I'm one of the greatest ever one day and
another day you're thinking about quitting. You need to be
more consistent or not say anything at all. But look,
(01:20:41):
it's kind of what what I said, which he said
attention seeker. I just think that he's one of those
guys that, uh, he wants to be told he's good enough,
he's smart, enough and gosh darned people like him. He's
searched for a compliment guy, And that's what the fox said.
Say all right, so first and third and uh, first
(01:21:05):
and third and two out Strasburg trying to get out
of the second inning. What will the fox say? What?
What do the fox say? Is brought to you by
True Car. You can find out what other people in
area paid for the same car you're looking for, new
or used. Visit True Car to enjoy a more confident
car buying experience. Uh, you know, it's interesting. There's been
(01:21:28):
so there's been so much discussion about some of his
off the field stuff. Panthers starting to use Christian McCaffrey.
Have you seen that? Right? Um? I didn't think Jared
Goff was great, but Cooper Cup should have caught the
game winner. There's like on field stuff that is getting missed.
We'll cover it with I from Salam. He's going to
join us in studio next hour. But coming up next
(01:21:51):
the n c A is doing something but it isn't
anything and will it make any sort of difference. We'll
discuss it on the Dug Gottlieb Show Fox Sports Radio.
What up? It's not got leave show Fox Sports Radio. Um,
we're not phonies on this show, not phonies at all.
(01:22:12):
And because of it, Um, it's okay for us to
tell you, like, I'm not a soccer fan like a
US soccer I'm not like a crazy US soccer fan. Um.
I'm sad that they lost yesterday, but I can't tell
you that I I thought. I didn't think it was
gonna be a good idea to replace Jurgen Klinsmann before
the World Cup, right, the whole thing was, Hey, so
(01:22:36):
the entire reason for his existence in US soccer was
the two thou eighteen World Cup. And they're like two
thousand and seventeen close enough. We don't like the way
it's going, and I in some levels I think they
reap what they saw, right, So um, but I mean
I'm bummed. I want to see US soccer do well.
I want to see it, but I can't. I'm gonna
(01:22:57):
tell you right now, I don't think it a are
they it affects the World Cup in anyway, there's like
nobody the World Cups, Like, oh, Americans aren't coming now.
The're probably hurt. There a tendant slightly not raven a
little bit. It's a World Cup. It's it's the opposite
of the Olympics. The Olympics need us have to have
(01:23:17):
us the Olympics every every eight years. The Olympics should
be in the United States because we're all about the well,
we'll we'll put somebody in every sport and we go
in a tenant and it's still kind of a cool
thing to us. And we have the infrastructure to have
already have these stadiums. We've already wasted all the all
the money that all these municipalities have to waste in
(01:23:38):
order to build up like we've already wasted that education
not that important, Global warming, not that pertinent sports teams important.
We have the state in the infrastructure to support um
all these different games. The Olympics were important, World Cup
we're not really that important. That's a weird one. Tray
(01:24:04):
Turner got a hit. That's breaking news. That's his first
of the postseason. He got a double, a wild pitch,
he's he's at third base. That means with no outs,
he's going to score. I guarantee very few things, but
trade Turner at third base with no outs, that cat's
gonna score. UM. And I don't like the way Ariet
has been throwing. He's walked a runner in the first
(01:24:25):
two innings and gave it, gave up a lace double
by trade Turner. This signals to me that he's not
sharp alright, More on baseball to come. I'm excited about
tonight's Indians Yankees game. Right Like you have c C. Sabathia,
a former Indian who pitched well, like they actually switched.
(01:24:47):
C C pitched well. Corey Kluber was terrible in game one.
And then you have the bullpens, the two best bullpens
in the American League going at it, and that should
be great, great, and the winner gets the Houston Astros,
who can really hit. But I don't don't think anybody
out in the seventh, eighth, or ninth like these other teams.
(01:25:08):
So more on that to come. Plus uh from Salam's
gonna join us in studio any I'll ask him about
what he's seen from Deshaun Watson is a former Houston Texan,
among other things, what he's seen from Shaun Watson? Is
he in fact as good or is it just a
early on you can get away with kind of a
college offense. Plus the national anthem controversy continues. The Dallas
(01:25:33):
Cowboys had a meeting today. Nobody knows what was said.
Jerry Jones has said guys have to not disrespect the flag.
Does that mean they can't kneel? Some believe that kneeling
is not disrespectful, that sitting is disrespectful. We'll get to that.
So we're waiting to for the next shoe to drop
in regards to this FBI investigation into college basketball assistant
(01:25:55):
coaches and head coaches and pay for players and taking
money from agents or shoe companies and giving it to
people either get a player or to deliver a player
to an agent, et cetera, and such. You guys know
this story right My modern Oklahoma State had their records
subpoenaed from their coaching staff going back to two thousand fourteen. UM,
(01:26:15):
I'm gonna tell you right now that's not good news.
That's just not You may be able to have what's
Mark Cubans deal, it's uh, what's his text deal that
where it erases things cyberdust. I mean, maybe you guys
are smart enough to do cyberdust or do what's app.
You know, got things that are encrypted that you can't
(01:26:36):
look up. But I would guess that there's some old school,
old fashioned texting that's gone on, and probably some emails
and some phone calls. There's probably some not good stuff there,
not good stuff there. But as we wait to see
if there's any other big name head coaches like Rick
Pettino that lose their job, the n c A is
(01:26:58):
not sitting on their hands per se. In the wake
of that FBI investigation, four assistant coaches six others associated
with basketball were arrested. They've decided to form a committee
because that's what you do. Your former committee, Condoleeza Rice
I respected gonna head it up. Here's the names of
the people on the committee. USA Basketball Chairman, General Martin Dempsey,
(01:27:21):
Grant Hill, David Robinson, Jeremy Foley, Mike Montgomery, John Thompson,
the Third Gene Smith, Jeff hathaway Um, the president of
Notre Dame John Jenkins, President of Georgia Tech Bud Peterson,
and former White House Council Katherine Rummler, and the president
(01:27:44):
of the a A you Association of American Universities, Mary
Sue Coleman. The commission will present recommendations on legislation, policy
and structural changes on the boards for action April one. Now,
Mike Montgomery coached at Cow and it stands for my
brother was as assistant for six years ago five years
(01:28:04):
of Cow. John Thompson just got fired to George Georgetown.
Those guys and Jeremy Folly knows generally the way things work.
He just retired at at Florida, And I think Gene
Smith and Jeff Hathaway. Hathaway was at Yukon for a
long time. But it does feel like that you need
guys a little bit more in the node. And then
(01:28:24):
it does it's like, let's just go get guys that
are figureheads, guys that you could connect to. Maybe they
know what's going on. And but I mean, if you
really want to fix things, don't you get somebody who's
running grassroots basketball organization. Don't you get somebody who was
recently a player who was recruited and offered money. Don't
(01:28:46):
you get I don't know, an AU coach. Don't you
get an agent? Aren't those the people? So I do
think the n c A they this does make sense. Hey,
let's let's try and we got a problem. Let's try
and identify the problem. Let's try and make some suggestions.
These are people that have come into contact with people
who have have have run a foul with the n
(01:29:09):
c A law. But there's no real bad boys here.
I mean there's and there's no offering up of hey,
this is what we used to do. Like, do I
think John Thompson got some help from David Falk, probably
from help from Nike? Probably? Do I think that he's
(01:29:29):
for gonna one second, go like, here's how we got players.
And I was at Georgetown. We call up Nike and
we go, hey, we need to get such and such
and so and so. You gotta get somebody who already
has a sullied reputation. Like I It's always interesting to
me when you have like a um, what's it called
Joeja snitch? Al Right, look, yeah, joe hoa smitch, has
(01:29:52):
got a criminal record. He may may he may snitch
in order to get his sentence reduced. But the joe
has snitch, she was actually in the jail house. The
guys who have the best info are the guys that
have pulled off the capers in the past. Those are
the people that should be on the committee if you
really want to get to the meat of it. Guys
(01:30:15):
with nothing to lose, whereas all these people have great
sterling reputations that they would have to lose if they
sold out themselves. I told you that Arita wasn't sharp.
He walked walk Spryce Harper. But that's the second time
they walked Harper. So they're being very careful with Harper,
very careful. First and third, one out right, Jason, we're
(01:30:39):
struck out now. One out, didn't it? I won't see
if trade turn doesn't get home. E from salam joins us.
All right, Jerry Jones met with his players today. Jerry
Jones yesterday said you won't disrespect the flight, But does
that mean that you can't kneel but for the flag?
(01:31:02):
And at what point did you go, hey, this is
it's not not evolving, not evolving. Do we move on?
But but if you move on, then does Trump win?
And the real thing is you've got competitive men who
don't want to let somebody else win that they don't like.
Is it's just a very very complicated. We'll get the
voice of a former pro bowler get his thoughts on
(01:31:26):
how NFL players should deal with the NFL's evolution of
their flag policy up coming next. But first, you already
know how much I love Dollar Shaved Clubs razors, right,
love them. Did you know there's so much more offered
by d SC razors, body cleanser, hair group, you know,
whether it's palm aide or you're a clay guy, you're
(01:31:48):
a gel guy. You know. They also have butt wipes.
They're called one wipe Charlie. They're amazing, I mean amazing,
right like think of you're seeing baby wipes, but think
of I always wish they had them for adults. They
do DSc as you covered from head to tell and
even the spots in between. And right now you can
try it for free in order to get their starter
(01:32:09):
set for just five dollars. That's a travel size shave
butter that's like shaving cream, only better and leaves your
face or your legs if you shave your legs and
a woman silky smooth. The body cleanser, the butt wipes,
and the month of their best razor. After that, replacement
cartridge ship for just a few bucks a month. The
starter set is five dollars today exclusively a Dollar Shave
Club dot com slash gottli. So you go to Dollar
(01:32:31):
Shave Club dot com slash golli gotlei be spelled g
O T T l I E B five Bucks shave butter,
body cleanser, butt wipes, and a month their best razor.
It's Dollar Shave Club dot com slash Gottli. Here's the
select quote difference. Most companies give you one option, one policy,
one rate, but select Quote gives you options, lots of options.
I want you to give select quote called eight hundred
(01:32:52):
eight eight one four four six six, or go to
select quote dot Com today for a totally free personal quote.
Doug Gotlum Show, Fox Sports Radio. This was a good
song when I was out, and I'm gonna think a
year wise. Uh, I was gonna go nine seven, all right,
that's from Salam. He would know that was his uh uh,
(01:33:12):
you know he's he's kind of an older soul. That
was when ninety six was when he was in uh,
when he was in college. Good time, Good time. Even
Salam joined us in suiting here, Doug Gottlieb Show. Okay,
so I know you've been paying attention to not just
the NFL, but also kind of the inner workings of
these protests, and like the it started to die down.
(01:33:35):
Then Trump calls players s O B S all the
players getting mad. Then there's bigger protests than it's like
it's going away, and then he kind of doubles down
on it, and then Jerry Jones comes out and says like, hey,
you can't disrespect the flag. The commissioner sends a letter
to all the teams saying, you know that they that
(01:33:56):
they would like to encourage players that basically want players
to stand um. And then the Cowboys have a players
only meeting. Everybody comes out and nobody talks to the media.
So what's gonna happen this weekend? Uh, you're on the
you're on the You're you're on the inside. You're like
the former player. Somebody's had to his text. You tell
you what everybody's gonna do. I would love to see.
(01:34:16):
I don't know what everybody's gonna do, because when you're
dealing with the Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones, pretty much
anyone in that organization, they do what he asks. Period.
That's just how that that's how he's run it, that's
how he's always run it um now, but he's always
taking care of players in the past, right, isn't that
his thing? Like would if you just just buy in
(01:34:38):
be a cowboy. I'll take care of when you're done.
I get it. But that leads to a false sense
of security. And what I mean by that is he's
known as a player's owner, right everybody from from from
the greats, you know, everybody says he's a great guy,
do anything for you except go to bad So if
(01:35:01):
he had, if he was, if he had guys on
that team who legitimately can't went to him and say, hey, look,
I'm in favor of the protests. And I don't know
if this has happened or not. Um, I've done all
my research and nowhere can I find a taking a
knee during the national anthem is a sign of disrespect
(01:35:22):
to the flag or the country. I feel strongly about
the issues that I'm protesting that are happening in the community,
so on and so forth, Jerry, I don't want to
disrespect you, your brand or any of this, but this
is important to me now in my eyes, A player's
(01:35:43):
owner says, Look, I get it, Okay, I understand what
you're saying. I understand what you're coming from. So what
I'm gonna do is I'm gonna hold a press conference,
all right, And I would like you to be there,
all right, and I want to directly talk about the
issue that you're protesting. Okay, I want to talk about it,
and then I want to come try to come up
(01:36:03):
with solutions, whether that's starting a foundation, are donating money
to uh, you know, a cause awareness. I want to
do that. That's the owner that's in it for the players.
It should be pointed out this is essentially what Roger
Goodell said though yesterday in his in his letter, his
letter said like, look, we want to we want to
(01:36:25):
forward this, okay, we we we want these issues to
be important, we want to draw attention to them. We're
just and I'd like, look, I think there's a reality
to it. We're all aware. If you're not aware now
of why players originally we're protesting, then you don't want
to be aware, right, And then you don't want to
be aware. You don't want so that mission has actually
in many ways been accomplished. And now if it's like
(01:36:46):
your genitor's protesting, the fact that you don't you think
you think that the president has has saber rattled with you, right,
and so now it's you're not you're kind of you're
protesting the anti protest. What about the idea of Jerry
Jones going like, look, I got it. Okay, I'm with you.
We did that. We did we all took a knee together,
which we did that. I was not a fan of that. Okay,
(01:37:08):
we we all did that together. But I'm getting calls
from all these sponsors guys, and I cook, this is
a business, and when when when a high percentage of
your fans wants you to stop kneeling for the flag,
we have to listen to our consumer. This is kind
of business. One oh one. The customer is always right. Um,
So I'm gonna I'm gonna ask you as men, or
(01:37:30):
tell you as as the leader of this company, this
is what the right thing for our company is to do.
But you have to give him something else? Why So
you have to. But we gotta remember he's he's for
the players. He's a players owner. So if the majority
of your players fell a certain way about something, you,
being that guy who's through the history of the Dallas
(01:37:51):
Cowboys been a player's owner, you just say that and
then walk out of the room and you just leave
the player. I think there's I'm like, look, there's a
warmth to Jerry Um but I like, look, the idea
of even a press conference, like, I'm not really sure
all that what that truly the fact doesn't matter, is
he and after this whole Donald Trump thing went down
(01:38:14):
and he came out and kneeled before that the national
anthems locked arms. Donald Trump and him had a conversation
shortly after that all of my players will stand for
the national anthem. To me, that doesn't resonate right. It
doesn't sit right at all, because now one of your friends,
(01:38:37):
who's the leader of the free world, shows this pleasure
and something that players are doing. He calls you on
the phone, talks to you about it, and then gives
you kudos over Twitter. That's classy way to go, Jerry Jones.
A kneeling and then standing for the national anthem. So
and then now you come out and say, nobody knels
for the national anthem. I'm not. I'm not. I'm not.
(01:39:00):
I'm not feeling that. That's not that's not okay with me.
And as if I was on that team, it wouldn't.
I understand. It feels like a setup. But it also
I'm also telling you, like there's a good amount of
people in the enough people like look, the president knows
this is like his only winning issue right now, right, No,
but it's he's like, look, I got a winner here.
I'm just gonna keep don't pay attention to North Korea,
(01:39:22):
don't pay attention to Puerto Rico, don't pay attention to anything,
the healthcare thing, all that stuff. It's not working people.
But you know, right, it's it's it's well, he's a
reality show star, so this is this is a reality show. Correct,
So he's all in on this, correct, And and but
he's this is a this is a winner for them.
(01:39:42):
And I'm sure Jerry probably has looked at the numbers,
looked at the RECHA. Now, look, my thing is they're
not losing money like that. I don't want people to
well that's always been that's always been My thing is
like people can say, I don't like you to kneel
before the fly, But then Cowboy games, aren't you gonna
watchat of course the Cowboys, packers you're gonna watch, like, yeah,
gonna watch. Sponsors are gonna pull out, They'll say, Mobile
(01:40:03):
whoever their sponsors are, they're gonna be like, you know what,
We're not gonna be No, it's not gonna happen. No one,
but no one ever calls corporations bluff like that. They
just don't. This would be a great time to do
it when when it's a message. What about the Cowboys
in terms of their play on the field, I thought
Doc played really, really as well as I've seen him
played this season. On the other hand, you combined all
(01:40:24):
of this still the questions about what happens with zeke
um some some dysfunction in terms of their play calling
uh in previous weeks, and it just feels like this
something ain't right with the Cowboys. It's not. And people
always say distractions are you know, well, we can do
with distractions. Once we get on the field, all that
(01:40:45):
goes away. Well it doesn't. That's that's evident. You know.
You come out and begin the season. We didn't know
who that was running the ball. I didn't I didn't
know if that was Ezekiel Elliott. And the offensive line
wasn't the offensive line that they were last year. Things
just weren't together. And when you spend your entire offseason
talking about off the field issues with a player, a
prominent player in your offense, then it affects you, right
(01:41:09):
because it's easy to say, yeah, when I get on
that field, everything changes. But it doesn't because you haven't
given enough attention to the things that made you successful
last year. Because you're fielding questions about Zeke is he
gonna play? We don't play. He didn't play some of
the preseason games because they didn't know. So when you
mess the timing up, it carries over and we're seeing
(01:41:31):
that in teams are going to feast off of that.
Teams don't, they don't care. Aaron Rodgers comes back and
leads them on an incredible touchdown drive and uh and
just it breaks the hearty game. Now, look, I have
said I understand that Tom Brady is more accomplished. I
think Aaron Rodgers is the best I've ever seen play quarterback.
That's a consensus, though a lot of people think. What
(01:41:53):
they do is what they say is they say, look,
he's the I've heard Shannon Sharp say this. I've said
a lot of people he's the best throw of a
football I've ever seen, which allows them to to say like, like,
he may throw it better, but Brady, his leadership is
clutchness is act there just something that basically saying like, look,
i'd like to believe that, but Brady has one more.
Brady has also had Belichick correct, So that's like Tom
(01:42:16):
Brady may not have been Tom Brady without Belichick. I
can tell you that. Okay. So so you said it's
a consensus. Is that your belief that Aaron Rodgers the
best you see? Because if you say, right now you
take Aaron Rodgers in his prime or Tom Brady and
his prime Rodgers, you have to because he brings more
to the table a right He's he has an ability
like when his offensive line is failing, which has had before,
(01:42:37):
when he has no receivers to throw to, which we've
been down that road, when they have absolutely no running
game whatsoever. We've been down that road, and your defense
is in the sharp as it it normally is. We've
been down that road with Aaron. He still finds a
way to be successful, have winning seasons and make it
to the playoffs. And that's tough to do period. And
(01:42:58):
as a as a former offensive line man, I'm in
the hotel with Aaron Rodgers. I respect, not that don't
respect Tom Brady or anything that he does. He's a
tremendous quarterback, but Aaron Rodgers just brings something extra to
the table and I dig that. I like that. Apram
Saloon Johnny as quickly, let's get you an update. UM.
(01:43:19):
I want to get to Ben Roethlisberger and what we
make of all of his different statements. I do want
to talk a little bit about the Patriots when that
Steph Gilmore is that is it can't get right in
that defense. And I want to talk about these young quarterbacks,
the second year quarterbacks. Everybody's talking about first though, Dan Buyer,
don't give me the update on Nationals. Nationals foot one
(01:43:40):
across to the top of the third inning. They were
able to get that run across thanks to a Chicago
Cubs air courtesy of Addison Russell. It was a storyline
in Game three with the errors in the Cubs. Chicago
was able to survive it. But right now the Nationals
lead the Cubs one nothing. In the top of the
fourth thinning, Steven Strasburg again the Game four starter four
the Nationals so far has struck out five and three
(01:44:03):
innings of work. He actually just struck out the side
in the bottom half of the third. Cubs trying to
close out the series with the win, Nationals trying to
force a Game five there's a Game five in the
American League tonight, Yankees in India today to Black Eastern Time,
and the Tribe will have Edwin and Karnassi own back
he returns after spreading his ankle in Game one at
c C Samathia against Corey Kluberg. John Farrell won't be
back with the Red Sox fired today after five seasons
(01:44:25):
as their skipper after some thought processes. To me, I
thought that it was the appropriate time to make a
change for the betterment of the organization and move forward.
And for me, I think at this point sometimes change
can be better and that's why we've decided to move
forward with the change now. Was Red Sox president Dave
don Browski, relieving Farrell of his duties after the Red
(01:44:46):
Sox were eliminated from the first round of the postseason.
The last two seasons, Timberwolves a guard Andrew Wiggins, have
agreed on a five year extended worth one and forty
eight million dollars. And in the NFL, Kevin Hogan named
the Brown starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Houston
Texans and the New York Giants today, suspending Dominique Rodgers,
cro Marty after he went a wall after a conversation
(01:45:07):
yesterday with Ben McAdoo, reports saying it was a heated exchange.
There was also reported guys that DRC was not happy
with his role, or at least the role that he
could be playing in the future, wanting to play maybe
outside instead of inside. A lot of drama when you're
all in five. That's where the Giants are right now?
Did you even salum things? Dan Um? Do you hear
my trade proposal? What was everybody's picking up on it now?
(01:45:29):
But I'm gonna take credit for it because I suggested, like,
Giants aren't going anywhere. Um, they're own five. They're going
to Denver. That's gonna be O N six. They have
no wide receivers at all. They're gonna have They did
draft Davis web so they at least do have a
potential quarterback there. Why not trade Elie to to the Jaguars?
Are right? The Jags are a quarterback away from being
a team that could play second weekend in the playoffs.
(01:45:50):
What do you get the first round draft pick? I
don't think you get a first form second, yeah, second
or third? You know, I mean, and I mean and
and as you know, when you go somewhere, you have
to have somebody who swears by you. And Tom Coffin
runs an organization and he doesn't have to be great.
They had Leonard four net um and they have decent
wide receivers. They had a very good defense. I don't
(01:46:11):
think the Manning family would let that go down. But
why because it's Jacksonville. Because it's Jacksonville, I promise you.
But wait, Peyton was in Indianapolis. Right, that's a difference.
That's a that's a difference. But that's not like a
major market. It's not going down. It's not a major market.
But it's it has lineage, it has his history, right,
(01:46:33):
has a history of winning. The guy running at the
organization one super bowls there, so you go into and
then they had the number one defense on the planet Earth.
So an aging Manning who came off a few neck surgeries,
whose arm was pretty much bubble gum can get to
a place with weapons all over the place and a
(01:46:55):
stout defense and he can just pretty much you know, well,
then it's this would give him a great running game.
It would be to me, to you, it makes perfect sense.
But egos and all of that, I don't. I don't
know if they would go from the number one market
in the world to the market that they are trying
to move to London. That's it's a it's a it's
(01:47:15):
a great point from Salon joining us on the Doug
Gotlip Show. All right, Ben Rothsburg comes out, He's like, hey, man,
maybe I ain't got anymore then, and then he's like, well,
I woke up and I knew I was I was awesome.
Um do you want my opinion? You wanted do you
want to go first? First? All right? So what I
said was Ben's one of these searching for a compliment guys. Right,
he's always overlooked. Right, Oh man, you know I'm I'm
(01:47:38):
so banged up. Ben, You're okay, you know it's so tough.
I might retire. Guys in this offseason, like, oh please, Ben,
don't retire. Hey, I might just not be good enough. Now, Ben,
You're still good enough. It's us, it's not you. That's
what it feels like to me. You play in this league,
you know dudes like you know Roethlisberger. What do you think? Um?
I think this started a few years ago, but it
(01:48:00):
really after at the end of the last season when
he was really like, with all of these offensive weapons now,
I mean they are loaded. He said, I don't know,
maybe I'll do something else, right, And of course yeah,
he wanted them to be like we need you and
and all of that. But once you start feeling and
saying those type of things, then you're really having conversations
(01:48:23):
about it. So your body, once you bring that into
existence and you speak that into your existence, your body
starts phecy. Your your body literally starts working towards that
direction and new balance, all white, new balances, polo shirt
(01:48:44):
tucked in with. So what happens is, especially at the
quarterback position, it's very difficult to be halfway in, halfway out,
all right, And for him to make a statement after
the worst game he's ever had in his life, maybe
I don't have it anymore. Then that's crossed his mind.
(01:49:05):
And whenever it crosses your mind at that level of player,
then it's pretty much he he wants out. And I
don't think I think it's a disconnect between him and Tomlin.
We've we've heard his criticism about Mike Tomlin, and I
don't think he has the patients with the younger players,
(01:49:27):
you know, I just don't think he wants to be
a dad in in the locker room. I don't think
he wants to call out guys that don't do that,
don't video in the locker room after what what are
you doing? Like to me as an older player, that
would drive me crazy, And I don't think he wants
to put up with it. He's like, well, look at
all the other things which he's thought about and some
(01:49:48):
of the things he's done in the off season, being
with the family, doing other things like this could be
life outside of football. I'll give you one. I'll bet
he watches Romo and goes I can do that. I
can do that and anything. You wanna pay me four
million dollars a year to sit and talk about football
and not get hit and wouldn't even win anything. Seriously, right,
(01:50:10):
I'm it has to have crossed his mind. And like
I said, it starts if he was in love with
the head coach, if they were on the same page,
we wouldn't be having this conversation. But he's not. He's
been critical. He's been critical of the stars on the
team and that defense is not doing them any favors. Right,
bing can have a view. He used to have a
bad game and the defense can pull him out of it.
(01:50:32):
We don't. We don't see that anymore, so now more
pressures on him. He threw two pixes back to back.
I mean, that's crazy, and you gotta remember he was
at an elite level. But when it goes, it goes,
it goes, it goes, goes. Fat Jake Delane, what what happened?
He went to his Super Bowl and then all of
a sudden he couldn't stop throwing to the wrong team.
(01:50:54):
It happened. It happened to match hup. Okay show, Yeah,
it was like, oh you again. It just couldn't He
couldn't stop the former Pro Bowl offensive lineman Format Shop
Eve from Salam joining Stu Gotlib show, Fox Sports Radio.
We have a we have a bunt? Was that Strasburg bunting?
And we have a picture bunt? Everybody said, don't bunt
(01:51:15):
like I don't know better than what we've seen Strasburg
when swings the bat. Okay, so um, we with the
older generation that we talked about, Eli about ben Uh,
Philip Rivers has had some ups and downs. So they
got the big, big win. But those guys are by
the time is winning that battle he always does. You
have these second year quarterbacks, we got Dak get Carson Wentz,
(01:51:35):
you got Jared Golf, one two three for their career
as of today? Who would you take? Who would I
take first? I would go with wins first. Why um
number one? His ability to come into the league last
year on fire means a lot, right, and do it
(01:52:00):
in a way where they lost all of their offensive
weapons gone. They were shipped all over the league, right
in an offense that you know he was getting used
to come from, come from a small school, big stage.
That showed a lot to me. Everybody's not plugging in play,
(01:52:21):
So I can I can respect that. Now you fast
forward to this year and he's only improved, He's he's
improved in everywhere. Imagine. And you gotta remember he does
not have an offensive line like the Dallas Cowboys had.
He does not. He did not have a running game
like the Dallas Cowboys. It's easy to hide the quarterback
behind a great offensive line in a running game. I
(01:52:42):
mean it really is. And then moving forward, if you
look at and I was very critical of of Golf
last year, but I knew it wasn't his fault, you know,
being in a situation where Jeff Fisher is about to,
you know, destroy another young quarterback's rudiment ridiculous, right, So
(01:53:07):
people were like, he's a bus I said, hey, look
all right, yeah, he's making mistakes, but like I said,
everybody is not plugging and play. What I saw from
him in the preseason leading up to this this season
was remarkable progress. And I went on record on on
my show and said the Rams will be a playoff
(01:53:29):
team this year because I saw him making decisions in
the pocket. I saw him checking the ball down. I
saw him commanding the huddle. That's important for me and
I always say it because I'm an offensive lineman. I
need a quarterback to come in and command the huddle.
Don't come in and and call a play with the
question mark at the end of it, right, like, let
us know, get us to the line, read the defense,
(01:53:51):
make the check. You need that in this league. And
he's showing that tough, tough loss last week through a
perfect pass Cooper Cup. I mean, he did everything he
was supposed to do. Those are valuable lessons. So I
take went I like golf, and I take that now
and look and I'm gonna look, I don't have a
(01:54:11):
problem with Dak. I just know that the offensive line
has been as good this year as it was last year.
Running game hasn't been a lot of pressure on his shoulders,
so you see a few cracks, all right. They were
locked in up front last year big time. It made
it easy for him. And yes, he is dynamic and
he brings another dimension to the game. But you know,
(01:54:34):
I really like Carson Wentz. I think I would actually
agree with those rankings whole hardly. Evenm Salon, you can
hear on weekends on Fox Sports Radio, two time pro
bowler with the Houston Texans. Thanks so much for joining us, um,
even though hopefully joined us every week. Great news for
one major League baseball team the playoffs right now. I'll
share that with you up coming next Doug Otlivi show
(01:54:55):
Fox Sports Radio. Dr Robert three three three says you
should have eat from sala them on every week. He
brings refreshing perspective to the show. Good We're gonna have
them on every week, so thanks, We thought so too, um.
John Lester is throwing in the bullpen for the Cubbies
as Jake Arietta does get out of a bases loaded
jam in the God, I have to be that guy. Now.
(01:55:18):
Is it is this because my eyes are bad or
I know it's the fourth inning. But I had to
put on my glasses because I brought my shoes and
my glasses, so I have them. Do you know that's
do you know what that's from? Ramo's I brought my
shoes and my glasses, so I have them. I brought
my shoes and my glasses, so I have them. Nothing.
Zero music, There's no way he knows. What about Dan Buyer?
(01:55:39):
Dan Buyer? Do you know? No, you don't remember jerky boys.
You guys never got jerky boys. I heard of them,
but Frank riz out nothing nothing, man. You guys need
to uh, jerky boys used to be I'm trying to
think with jerky boys, I know it was you In
(01:56:00):
the Southwest and the South they had There's a guy,
roy D Mercer. This is roy D Mercer and he
used to prank call people um. But on the East
and West coast it was the jerky boys. Jerky boys. Well,
there's the first Contraris slides head first in the first
base and the ball hits him in the shoe, so
(01:56:22):
he gets second base and you're not supposed to slide
head first, and he's not to slide in the first base.
All right. Anyway, let's get to the press, the press.
(01:56:43):
Who I might be able to hook you guys up
with something True Cars brought to you by the press.
The press is brought you by True Car. You can
find out what other people in the area paid for
the same car you're looking for, new or used as
a true card, and enjoy more confident car buying experience.
The Calgary Flames taken on the l A Kings. Anybody
want to go? I tickets? When is it tonight? I
(01:57:04):
have soccer practice tonight. Oh man, I know, like I
don't even like hockey, but I'm like pretty tickets that
are probably pretty close to the ice. What do you think,
Yarramir Yager playing tonight for the Calgary Flames. Yes, really, yes,
I honestly had no idea. Uh see, my wife can
(01:57:25):
get a sitter. I'm gonna go. Like we've never been
to a hockey game. I've been one. All what you
got there? Did? Um? Just a quick note that John
Morossi passed along on Twitter and I think it's apropos
for this NAT's Cubs game. The Nationals were ahead or
tied during the seventh inning of games that eliminated them
in the two thousand twelve, two thousand fourteen, and two
(01:57:45):
thousand sixteen Division Series. So if they continue to hold
this lead, maybe it's bad news for the Nationals because
leads haven't been good to them and there are other
eliminating games in the past. Jake Carrietta, by the five
walks so far, did get out of that. Basically, he
ain't sharp. He is not and and look, one of
the things that I've I like listening and learning. Learn
(01:58:08):
a lot from Dan Buyer about Seahawks and brewers and stuff,
and uh learn a lot from uh my boy John
Romins about movies. I'm not really sure if I learned
anything from Ryan Music. But um, what I've learned from
all of my baseball friends is that when these guys
get tired, it's not like I told you. It's not
like RBI baseball, where you go from like ninety five
(01:58:29):
to like throw an eighty three mile pus when you're
not right, when you get tired, it's the accuracy that's
when you start walking, dudes. And that's what's happened with
Arieta Indians. We'll put Corey Kluber on the mill tonight
against C. C. Sabathia and the Yankees. Game five starts
at eight o'clock Eastern Town, with the Tribe getting Edwit
and Karnarcione back from that ankle injury. Is he's expected
(01:58:51):
to be in the lineup tonight. Who do I like?
I like the Indians. I just I can't see Corey
Kluber pitching is poorly nor can I see H. C. C.
Sabathia pitching as well in in consecutive games. I can't
believe that. I'm gonna say this. I don't I don't
have a dog in the fight. But if the Yankees win,
(01:59:12):
I'm afraid that the Yankees would just get swept by
the Astros and it would be no series. And I
almost kind of want a competitive ALCS with the Indians
and Astros. Does that make any sense? Yeah, I get it.
You look, you want, you want great baseball? Great baseball
is Game six, Game seven. My issue with the Astros is,
I just don't think they're bull I don't think they're
bullpens any good. And I think you win with bullpens.
(01:59:34):
On the other hand, and I think what you're getting
at is that's great. The Yankees bullpens great, but they're
starting pitching is putrid against that incredible lineup that the
Astros are gonna throw out there as suppose the Indians
and a good starting pitching and a tremendous bullpen to
go with it, as well as enough enough offense. The
Astros did it outs Dallas Kakula Justin Verlander will start
the first two games in the Championship Series. Not not
(01:59:55):
surprising there at all, and maybe not surprising to get
Boston is the Red Jocks did fire Job Farrell as
their skipper today after five seasons. Yeah. What I've been
told is that they loved him as the pitching coach.
He just struggled and lost. They lost the locker room,
and that's a weird locker room. Plus, remember Dave Dombrowski
didn't hire him. Dave Dombrowski came over from the Detroit Tigers.
(02:00:18):
That's why Brad Ostomus, who didn't do well as the
Tigers skipper, is one of He and Alex Cora are
the two most likely replacements for John Farrell. Calves forward
Lebron James, still dealing with a sprained ankle. He's gonna
miss their preseason finale on Friday, and Tyron Louther, head coach,
said that, you know, I'm not sure if he's gonna
(02:00:40):
be able to play that season opener Tuesday against the
Boston Celtics. Coach lu said against the Celtics opening opening
United of the NBA. Yeah, that that will go That
will go over really well the Commissioner's office. Right, the
timber Wolves at guard Andrew Wiggins, I agree that a
(02:01:00):
five year extension worth one and forty eight million dollars. Nope,
no player option, by the way, for the fifth year
of the deal. Um, no player option. Well, like, look, now,
let's see if the Timberloves can actually win games. You know,
they have a tremendously talented big guy, you have two
outstanding wings, You've changed point guards, you've changed coaches. Let's
(02:01:21):
see if they can actually win and get in the playoffs.
On paper, they should be a playoff team. But games
aren't played on paper. They played inside television sets. Adrian
Peters should met the media today a member of the
Arizona Cardinals. He's gonna wear number twenty three, Doug. That's
because Justin Bethel of the corner. Where is number twenty eight?
Apparently they couldn't come up with a deal. But how
about this deal? While Adrian Peterson plays for the Cardinals,
(02:01:42):
he's staying in Larry Fitzgerald's guest house. I like that, Yeah,
I like that. I'm guessing it's a pretty sick guesthouse, right, Yes,
you're like a guest house. It's like one room. Like no,
I think it's house guest house. It is fascinating how
many running backs we went through this yesterday. How many
running backs have gone to retire there? Right? Uh, Edrian James,
(02:02:03):
Garrison Hurst, Emmett Smith, Emmett Smith, and now Adrian Peterson.
And yes, we'll be wearing number twenty three, which is
apparently a number that he wanted to use earlier in
his career, but he had to buy out the Jersey numbers,
so he just stayed with number twenty eight. Now he
gets number twenty three backing out there and pressed that
was the press. It's interesting in the twenty three. Obviously
Jordan's number is not a big football number, but twenty
(02:02:26):
eight also is not. The thirty two was all thirty
two and thirty three were always running back numbers, right,
twenty nine was Eric Dickerson, twenty was Barry Standards right,
thirty two was O J. Thirty three was Tony Tony
Dorset right, Yes, those are the numbers. Thirty four was
Walter Payton. The only twenty eight I could think of
(02:02:47):
aside from Peterson was Marshall Falk, Marshall and old Shaw.
Running back Kurt Warner, Kurt Warner, the other Kurt Warner Warner, Yes, yes,
want to see who wins the night. I'm gonna say
the Indians win tonight because they're the Indians and they're
at home. This is the Doug Gottlier Show, Fox Sports
Radio
