Speaker 1 (00:01):
You're listening to Fox Sports of America Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio coming to you the beautiful, sunny, red
hot City of Angels, home of lebron Manny Machado and
for at least the next six years, Todd Gurley, The

(00:23):
Rams are girly men for more money then Levian bell
Is said to make. Will discuss upcoming in the show.
Plus a j Hinge, manager of the defending champs, Your
Houston Astros who have been lambasting fools, just smacking fools around.
I got a bunch of things I want to get to.

(00:44):
How did they fix justin VERLANDA? How do they do it?
How they fix justin Verlinda? Plus I want to talk
to about the challenges of trying to do it a
second time. No, fellas, I'm not talking about that a
second time, although there are similar challenges a second time around. Uh.
Kevin Love gets paid today? What's that mean for the Calves?

(01:05):
I got some and his canter is gonna join us
in studio. How all of a sudden he made nice
with Colin Cowherd, Brian Scalabrini. We think we'll join us,
although we don't know who was supposed to join US yesterday.
He's big scale and Connor Barrowin, who signed a new
contract with the Gyan Connor Barrowin, who, of course has
made a kind of mercurial run around the National Football

(01:27):
League Eagles most uh it was Houston Eagles Rams. And
now he goes back to the NFC East. We'll find
out if he still carries that awful Houston Texans letterman
jacket from back in the day when they were playing
good and then they haven't been the same since. We
got a lot to get to today. I want to
start with this though. College football is around the corner,

(01:50):
and college football does it right, I mean right right
out of the shoot unbelievable games. Have you guys spent
any time and looking at the opening slate of college
football games? Can? I? Can? I wet your appetite? And
by the way, I didn't know this until I misspelled
it on Twitter and got chastised for it years ago,

(02:12):
But wet your appetite is not spelled w e T.
It is not. It is what your appetite w h
e T right, so you almost pronounce it like you do.
Um uh, what's the family guy? F family episode? Whip
cool whip, cool whip. Right, it's what your appetite, dude,

(02:37):
college football does it right, don't believe me? All right,
here you go, this is awesome. You're opening weekend of
college football Oregon State, Ohio State, Uh, Texas, Maryland. Remember
last year Maryland went into Texas and smacked him around
Old Miss Texas Tech, Florida Atlantic, Lane Kiffen taken on

(03:01):
Oklahoma Um. And then you start to get to some
of the premier games. Washington taking on Auburn that's at
Mercedes ben Stadium, Tennessee taken on West Virginia. You're welcome,
and dude, you get it gets even better U c
l A. Cincinnati's okay, but you also have No Tree

(03:22):
Dame playing host to Michigan first weekend of the season,
Miami l s U Virginia Tech, Florida State. It's awesome.
They're just like, hey, let's get awesome teams with awesome programs,
really interesting stories, coaches, new players that you've never heard of,
and stop with the players reserved to be paid, because
I'll make the easiest case, you know. And this kind

(03:45):
of goes in a theme with what we're talking about,
which is I can guarantee that outside of your own
football program, you cannot name ten college football players as
of right now, can't name ten. You might take away
your own school and you can't name ten. I challenge
you to do so that are currently playing in college football.

(04:06):
So if you want to tell me that the player's
likeness and image matter, you tell me. Do you have
any idea who plays for Miami? Can you name a dude?
Can you name a guy? Do you know who l
s u s quarterback is? Virginia Tech, Florida State DeAndre
Francoire No Floria State. But that's because he got hurt
last year. So one of the biggest lies you've ever

(04:30):
been told is that college football players name and likeness matter.
They don't. The jersey matters, the logo matters, the coach matters,
the stadium matters, the fight song matters more than a
player does. Now you come to fall in love with
the player because you tune in to see the team
and the logos play against one another. But the players

(04:53):
don't matter. But this goes in line with so many
things you've been lied about in your life. Uh, there's
a guy whose road toned who you celebrate the appearance
of in the end of December. I'm not going to
mention his name because some of you have kids in
the car. But that's the first lie you've you're told
when you're just a baby. Not the only lie, but

(05:14):
it's the first. You want to know. The biggest lie
you're told in sports is that if we were to
expand the college football playoff, it would diminish the value
of the regular season. Went right, it would diminish the
value of the regular season. If that were true, if

(05:34):
people liked the fact college football's regular season more so
than any other regular season, why are the numbers more
than double when the NFL plays in the exact same
time of year the very next day, in the exact
same sport. You can tell me that it's because they're
better players. I'll buy into that. You can tell me

(05:56):
it's because of fantasy football. I'll buy some of that.
But has forever been true that an NFL rating almost
always doubles and sometimes triples that of the best college
football rating of the day, And the NFL that's twelve
teams in their playoffs. There's only thirty two teams in
the sport. You have been lied to, my friends, Now

(06:19):
that does not mean that I believe every team belongs
in but using college basketball as a parallel to college football, hey,
college basketball's regular season has become almost irrelevant. That's what
would happen to college football, right, That's what people say.
And that is a low hanging fruit, very neanderthal, very

(06:40):
easy argument for us to grab onto, because we go
college equals college perfect. The problem though, is that it's
not really accurate. Right. College basketball has been greatly diminished
because players are only there for a split second, one
and done. We don't know any of the players. Forget

(07:02):
about coaching movement. We've got player moves. There's also almost
three times as many teams in college basketball. It's a
Division one teams in college football. There's three hundred and
fifty two Division one teams in college basketball. It's just
too many teams, just too many games and will be
out by the way. And this is hurt college football.
With these super conferences being put together, we sometimes lacked

(07:24):
the rivalry games we used to. Arizona and U c
l A one of the great rivalries in the West Coast.
They only play each other many times one time of year.
The league championships don't matter anymore because you don't play
everyone twice, because you don't have eight and ten team
leagues the way you used to. Also, college basketball continues
to compete up against college football on the same campus

(07:47):
for the first two months of the season, which is death.
I love the sport, I've covered the sport nationally for
fifteen years, I've played in the sport. But the idea
that let's start our year during the prime time of
baseball and NFL and college football on the same campus
for the same money, for the same fans. And oh yeah,
by the way, every game now for college basketball, like football,

(08:09):
is on TV. And what used to be special about
college basketball is getting people in a small bandbox building.
The buildings are bigger, and yet it's more expensive to
go there, and you're competing for the same fans that
their attention is turned to back to football, same fans,
same dollar. It doesn't go nearly as far. There's a

(08:32):
one and done, there's player movement, there's no rivalries anymore.
All of these things contribute to college basketball having a
very having a relatively irrelevant regular season comparison to that
of college football. The truth is, the absolute truth is
if you want to make college football's regular season matter,

(08:53):
because right now it mostly does not. That's actually the
biggest lie. It's the counter to it. Every game manners,
no doesn't. Once you lose your third game, your season
is over. Your season is over. And if you play
if you think you're not going to have a great team,
and so you soften your schedule and you play an

(09:13):
easy nonconference schedule and you lose one game, many of
these teams season is over. Let alone too. The only
way a to win team can get into a college
football playoff is by winning their winning their side of
the division, and then winning their league championship. So for
the most part, you get down to the most important
part of the season, you get into late October early November,

(09:37):
and three quarters of the teams games don't actually matter.
It's counter to what you've always been told. And so
in this in this effort to expand the college football playoff,
which should and likely will happen, mostly because there's just
too much money for it not to do. So, you
have all kinds of issues that you're going up against.
Right you got the bowls and they want to stay relevant.

(10:02):
You've got the conference championship games, which some want to
eliminate which one they do oftentimes settle who is the
true conference champion because teams don't always play each other
in the same league, especially some of the best teams,
you gotta play at least play each other once and
then sometimes in the Big twelve, now they play each
other twice, which we din we already beat you, we
gotta beat you again. But more importantly, it makes conferences

(10:26):
the schools that don't participate a lot of money. The
idea of changing the conferences, making super conferences seems like
a great idea, But somebody's gonna get left out. And
if they get left out, their congressmen may bring it
up that, hey, there's a tax shelter here for all
these college football programs. Why are we allowing them not
to pay taxes? And that may bring the whole system down.

(10:50):
There are a lot of stuff there, a lot of stuff.
But the truth is that if you simply expand to
eight teams, and you make five or even six teams,
and you make the five of conference champions champions automatically
gain access to a college football playoff, you've done the
opposite of what they told you it would do. You

(11:11):
have made the regular season, the conference season, which anyone
who's ever played in college knows. We were told that's
the most important thing. When your league beat for our tribal,
the rest, Hey, we'd like to win the rest of
our games too, you'd make the regular season more relevant.
But of the lies that you've been told when you
were growing up, and there's lots of them, lots of

(11:32):
things you were allied to, right, I remember when you're like, hey,
you can be anything you want when you grew up,
like now you can. Your mom's five to your dad's
five six both a road tun You're not gonna play
in the NBA. It's just not happening. Hey, Bud, your
i Q is not good enough for you to be
an asked Astronauts are super smart and super studious. Just
because you want to go to space doesn't mean it's

(11:54):
gonna happen for you. There's economic barriers. There's barriers based
upon the sex, barrieres based upon regionality, barries based upon language.
It's all said, different sorts of barriers. It doesn't mean
you shouldn't dream big and try and have your kid,
try and be better than what you are. But you
were told young age like you can do anything you want,

(12:14):
not really, not really. You can be a success at something,
but not anything you want. Let's be honest, there's like
one percent of one percent that can ever play a
skill position, a speed athletic position in the National Football
League because you're just not born with the natural gifts.
You didn't win the genetic lottery. Sorry, same thing in

(12:37):
the NBA. Like, if you're not going to be six
ft or taller, hell, six ft two, six ft three
or taller, you should probably pick a different sport. The
numbers are against you, no matter how much you love it.
But you lied to all the time. We were lied
to about the dangers of certain drugs that were then
illegal and then not illegal, certain drugs that were legal. Alright,

(13:01):
Like remember the beer commercials where everybody's good looking, everybody's
having a good time. Have you ever been to it?
You ever been to a shady bar at happy hour?
Nobody's particularly good looking, they're not having a great time,
and they're simply trying to drink all their sorrows away. Right,
So you've been lied to your whole life. But in sports,
the number one lie you were told was that expanding

(13:24):
the college football player for simply having a playoff would
make the regular season irrelevant, like college basketball, like the NHL,
like the NBA. It could you know, we got a
sixty four team playoff on a teams, but no one
is proposting that, and that will never happen. But if
you validate conference champions, grant them automatic admission admission to

(13:51):
a college football playoff. And there is a lot of
other stuff. Too many games for the teams that play
that extra game, and and can the can a young
college body stand up to sixteen games and be standing
at the end of the year. A lot of things
that go into it, But the idea that it makes
the season, the regular season irrelevant is the opposite of

(14:12):
the actual truth. You've been lied to. We just want
to be honest with you. We've all had a bad
day in the golf course. Sadly, it's not always easy
to find a fix for your golf game, but it
is easy to find a fix for your check engine light.

Get in the zone Auto Zone all right. From UH

(14:36):
from football to baseball, A J. Hinch is the skipper
of the Houston Astros. To this point, they have not
made a move on the trade market. But remember last
year it wasn't until the waiver wired deadline that they
acquired Justin Verlander. I want to ask them about if
they'll be active on that market. Seems like there is

(14:57):
a need there. I want to ask them how they
ex Justin for Lander and then the challenges to try
and to do it a second time when you've already
climbed Mount kilimajaro A j hints joins us up coming
next brought to you by Progressive Insurance. We'll compare rates
for you so you get a great deal even if

(15:18):
it's not with us saving you time and money. Now
that's Progressive Call or click today. M Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. UM, I was taked a long time
ago in this business, a long time ago, in this
business that wins and losses due in fact matter. Much
like though when we look at pictures records, you don't

(15:41):
you look at whip. You look at the r a
more so you look at wins and losses. When you
look at a baseball team, especially now once you get
you know, more than a hundred games in look at
their run differential to see how good they really are,
how good they really are, and the team would the
best run differential in baseball. Remember this is with the

(16:04):
Red Sox, who are seventy one and thirty one, winners
of eight of their last ten. Uh. This is with
the New York Yankees, who have an absolute mash mashers,
you know, the New Bronx Bombers. The Houston Astros have
scored one hundred and eighty eight runs more than their opponents.

(16:24):
Here's the comparison. They're sixties six and thirty six. The
Red Sox have a better record at seventy one and
thirty one, but they've only outscored their opponents by a
hundred and sixty nine runs. In other words, throw out
some of the actual wins and losses, those the one
run games they end up shading to the side of
the better team. Run differential proves your dominance or level

(16:47):
of skill, your level of success, and the Astros are
the best team in baseball. Don't get it twisted, but
that shouldn't be a surprise. They won the World Series
last year, of course, with the help of the addition
of Justin Verlander. Their managers A. J. Hinch's kind of
have to spend some time this year on the Doug
Gottlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. A J. Do you
do you agree generally with that philosophy that run differential

(17:10):
is a better sign, a better tailtale sign of how
good a team is in comparison to their actual win
loss record. Yeah, I mean a little bit. I think
I think our run difference those you know, kind of
an overall snapshot of the season. You know, we've been
extremely dominant on the mound. We can score. Um, you know,
the wins and losses are ultimately what matter. It doesn't

(17:31):
you know, you want to have the winds and the
law and and and avoid the losses. That um, when
you're looking at at at comparison across the league, there's
so much that that can be taken away from so
many different numbers nowadays run differentials. Certainly, if you're good
at run scoring and good at run prevention, the wins
are gonna be there for you. And um, you know,
obviously we've done very well so far, and and it

(17:53):
and it and it proves that we have a good team.
So UM, I'm not sure how much that helps you
when you go head to head with ball center in
New York or Cleveland, or the surging Oakland A's and
stuff like that that are on our schedule. But but
I think it helps. It helps describe a little bit
of how the season has gone thus far for teams. Um, okay,
what what about the fact that teams are hitting two

(18:15):
eleven against you? And and for people who by batting
average against and and here's your like, is that good?
It's the best in baseball. It's not just the best
in baseball by you know, a percentage point or two.
The Dodgers are people hitting two thirty six, They have
the second best. Like it's that's by a mile. Um,
it's really remarkable what your staff is able to consistently do.

(18:38):
And like, look, the ball flies out of your ballpark.
That is not an easy ballpark to pitch in, as
are some of the ballparks you guys playing. How have
you been able to have the staff be so consistent
through the year. Well, our starters, I mean, and not
to put it all on them, but we had three
of our five starters maybe all star key, a fourth
in Dallas Kaikol who's probably pitched as well as anybody
in the last month, and a and an a former

(19:00):
Cyon Award winners. So we we roll out a starting
pitcher who's dominant it's hard to hit, that doesn't give
up a ton of hits every single night, and we
use five starters to date. UM, that shows you've been healthy,
they've been consistent. Um, they all haven't been perfect for
the entire season. It's usually when if somebody is is
having a rough time getting deeper in the game, the

(19:21):
other guys are picking up the slack. So you know
when we're when in the names like Burlander and Cole
and kaikol And and mccullors and Morton. Um, you know
mccullors and Morton both finished big playoff games last year.
Kaikos want to cion Garrett Cole has been tremendous edition
that we traded for uh this offseason. And then Justin
Verlander is right up in the in the in the

(19:42):
in the A l C. A young conversation. So when
you do that and and and have that kind of
starting pitching, UM, you know, you're asking your bullpen to
come in and get you know, six to eight outs
to night. UH your limit hits there and all of
a sudden you look up and you're like man our
steps pretty tough to hit. How did you guys fix Burlander?
You know, I don't know if it's fixed him as

(20:02):
much as just encourage them to be the best version
of himself. This his high fastball. You know. I think
it's as pitchers age, they get a little bit concerned
about how they used to pitch. You know, when you're
young and you have your tank, it's pretty easy to
pitch with your strength. As you age, you might try
to adjust a little bit too soon. And we got

(20:23):
him back to being himself using the high forcing fastball.
Both of his breaking balls are very effective. A lot
of people don't know. One of his best pitches as
a young pitcher was his change up. Who's incorporated that
a little bit more? But um, you know, this guy
is a little bit of of of a different animal
when it comes to how he how he's aging, how
he's able to hold his stuff. Um, he gets better

(20:44):
as the game goes on. He's a tremendous finisher. Um.
But like with all of our pictures, I think, if, if,
if we can just get the best version of themselves
to them to use their stuff correctly in the right
areas of the side zone. Against the right type hitters.
You know, that's matchup baseball. That's the way they we
scout now, and it's the way that we we acquire
our information to the to the pitching staff. So j

(21:05):
V took ticket to heart and has been tremendous. And
and and the proofs in the numbers. Yeah, but wasn't wasn't.
Don't you guys use these high speed cameras, these super
expensive high speed cameras from different angles of the park
to which he was able to pick up some of
the different some of the things that he had changed
that he wanted to fix when he first got there. Sure,
now we use technology as much as anybody in baseball.

(21:26):
And they were you know, I joke with the All
Star team last week, like were they used the masters?
We try everything, We'll try anything. And and when you
have players that are open, uh to any sorts of information,
I'm I'm I'm very impressed with the way that Garrick
Cole's come over and jumped into our culture. And justin
Verlanders as intellectually curious as any picture in baseball, And

(21:46):
and and Dallas Kaiko has grown up in this system,
born and bred in this in this organization has known
nothing but that Charlie Morton comes off of an injury
season Untiladelphia comes over immediately jumps on board with some
some pitch use and stuff like that. So it takes
players to, you know, to buy into what we're doing
and what our analysts are studying and what our coaches

(22:06):
are preaching and and it's a true team effort. But um,
without the player participations, just information. Uh. You look, the
the one issue that I think people are going to
point to is the bullpen. You know, Giles is head
an up and down year. Um and and obviously that
came to ahead a couple of weeks ago or a
week and a half ago or so. Um. Can can

(22:27):
we can we expect? I mean, look at the front
office has done everything in its power last year, took
to the waiver wire to get j V. Is there
an expectation that there could be an addition made before
this season runs runs its course? Maybe? You know, maybe?
I think I think in some ways it has to
fit your overall philosophy and it has to fit you know,
the the day to day that we're trying to accomplish.

(22:47):
Me we're built for one sixty two right now? We
have a good bullpen who's who's pitched very well this season.
And I think sometimes we point to some of the
losses or some of the the only time you notice
a bullpen is when they when they don't do their
part and you end up blowing a few leads or
blowing a few saves. And you know, there's a lot
of talk of how how things were put together last season,
but um, I don't know. I mean, I think it's

(23:08):
it's always possible. I think any team that's in playoff
contention is can probably be linked to every reliever in baseball,
because that's that's the easiest thing to add. And and
people always feel like they can upgrade their bullpen. Um
if there's a viable option that Jeff Fields is an
upgrade Lune our general manager, then we'll do it. If not,
we'll go with the group that we have. And and
what people need to remember is that is similar to

(23:30):
how we did it last year. The playoffs often pushed
one or two of your starters uh into the into
the bullpen. And if that's the case, I just rattled
off the starting the starters that are hard to hit
and have low e r A we able to make
the All Star team, and and that might be the
addition that needed down the bullpen to to get to
your twenty stuff it out. Plus yeah, my boy Joe Smith,
who of course is the Yankee killer right last year

(23:51):
just Sanchez and and Judge couldn't couldn't hit him. You
could always you always call m smitty to come in
and get some some right easy, no doubt and no doubt.
He comes from the funky angle everything in baseball. He's
a great clubhouse guy. We signed them, um to really
be this this sort of ready killer. He actually left
these out this easy, that the back door slider and
you can pitch up in the zone with a little

(24:11):
side arm stuff. So um again, I think I think
there's always this plotation having to have the fine roles.
It's anything that we've learned in the last calendar year,
even dating back to two dozen fift team when I
first started here. There's a lot of different ways to
get to your twenty seven outs. And and while everyone
wants to Mariana Rivera and the Trevor Hoffman and the

(24:31):
and the you're all the Chapmans of the world that
are that are that are shut down ninth inning guys you.
You know, there's there's there's trigger points through the through
the game that you're gonna need. Somebody's got to get
the outs in the seven. Somebody gotta get out in
the six. Joe Smith, Kris Davinski. He had to run
down who's pitching terrific in our ninth inning? Right now? Um?
Those are those are guys that can get out against

(24:52):
these teams. Um. Is it as enjoyable this year as
it was last year? Yes, Well, it was a there
was there was there was there was a breath, there
was a well the series is hard to top in
the in the regular season, but nothing like but the
but the process of it, now, last year it was
still you know three years ago you got there. The

(25:13):
next year it was like right, and there's changes made obviously,
so last year youear building towards it, but you know,
trying to do it again. And so is it it's
as fun this year as it was last year? Yeah?
I think the I think there's a couple of different observations.
Number one is I'm so proud of our players for
for taking the message in spring training about owning up

(25:34):
to the fact that no one's no one's repeated since
I think it was in two thousand when the Yankees.
For the years since the team has been able to
go back to back, and that's what that's what our
goal is, and the players absorbed it. We haven't. We
haven't had any sort of hangover, any sort of dragging,
or any sort of sort of diva status that can
come with winning or success. And I had got great
examples in josel Today and George Springer and Alex Bregman

(25:57):
is having a coming out party in Major League Baseball
now and Carlos Korea when we get him back, will
be a nice boost. These I got names throughout the
whole team that have have showed up ready to play
every day. The interesting part that I've learned about winning
he is the standard that's said that there's no room
for failure. Right. You lose two games in a row
as as the defending world champions, and people are asking

(26:18):
a lot more question about what's wrong. And and I
think we're a game or two off of our pace
for last season. We're thirty games over five. I love
the fact in two thift we wanted to win ninety games,
we wanted to to win the division. We end up
making the playoffs for the first time in ten years
and in four short years. You know, the It makes
me smile to know that the standards are so high
that when if you lose a series or you lose

(26:39):
back to back games, there's there's that sense of of, hey,
we need to win this both inside the clubhouse and
from our fan base. And that's that, to me, is
the winning franchise. I don't think there's any doubt in it. Um,
how do you solve how do you solve baseball's issues
with um? With the shift? You know you just said
how you're talking about how like you guys use analytics,

(27:01):
you guys use high speed cameras. You guys use any
possible legal means to be better. And if the numbers say, hey,
this guy is a dead pull hitter and they're not
trying to lay down a butt, they're not trying to
hit what what? Why should baseball be dumber instead of
being smarter? And and go away from the shift. I
don't think the hit I don't think you should go

(27:22):
away from the shift. I don't think I need to
fix the shift. I think the hitters need to fix
the shift. If the hitters adjust, the game will adjust.
But if you refuse to play the game line to line,
and you're gonna get teams like us and teams like
around me, the Cubs, the Royals, the the the Indians,
aggressive teams that will play into the shift. I mean
virtually all teams shift now because the hitters aren't making

(27:44):
the adjustment to play the game. If they play the game,
then we have to shift back. And we have. There's
a number of hitters that we shifted in the past
that we don't shift anymore because they've they played the game.
So I mean, we considdle with the rules and we
can make it a layup drill. And when when a
guy wants to pull pull as the ball and pull
the ball into the four hole, I don't think that's
what our sports about either. It should be hard to

(28:04):
get on base. And I understand fans want to see
more hits and they love the homer in the way
that that that baseball has grown. But um, if if
people want to fix the ship, we gotta fix the hitters.
How do we how do we fix the hitters? How
do we fix the hitters from hitting you know, home run,
strikeout or walk? I mean, like we we had ten
home run, like like even your even the World Series
last year with the ball is flying out of the ballpark. Uh,

(28:26):
some of it, I'm sure is has to be a
little bit of the baseball. Some of it is the parks,
Uh you know, some miss the bats. Some of it's
the players in their strength, but a lot of it
is also their swing plan and how that's changed. How
do we how do we put the ball in play more? Sure? Well,
if one would be if we compensate contact a little
bit differently than we than we have in the past.
I mean the ops numbers are are are sky high.

(28:48):
And what drives ops or walks and Homer's I mean,
that's that's those are two statistics that are immense now
in in the in the financial structure for players in it.
And and you know they're obviously it's hard to compensate
a single to the other the other side or um,
you know, I don't know if that's the complete answer,
but um, you know, I think for for us to
simply put fielders where there's dead grass like old school

(29:10):
in the outfield, or where there's you know, you're not
allowed to have an off offside short stoff has to
play Traditionally where short stop is um I think then
we should stop. So we should start telling the NFL
they can't blitz. We can't do full core press. In
the NBA, we can't. You know, you can't put any
pressure on during a tennis match. You can't shoot for
birdies and golf. I mean, we're it's up to the
to the to the to the teams. If it's valuable

(29:32):
enough to win games by playing the game in a
different way, then that's what we have to combat. But
we we reward walks and homers at an all time high.
It's it's going to continue. It is fair though to
point out that like it look in basketball, they've evolved
the rules, right, they change the hand check rules. You
can play zone. Albeit the zone rules are a little
bit different than the traditional zone. Right in in football,

(29:54):
there are a certain number of guys you have to
have in the line of scrimmage. Like so there are
rules that I agree with you, like like at this
reports says the guy's dead pool hit her and he
refuses to lay down a bunch or to hit the
other way, then you know, make him make a change.
But there there is the idea of the kind of
watchability factor I go to baseball games, and there are
there are big lolls in between it. Um, I just

(30:14):
there there are rules have been put in place by
other sports to make it a little bit more matchable. Right,
But we're but we're I mean the configuration of where
you play your defense in the NFL or what you
do on the basketball court is is a little bit different.
I think. I think for me, if it's the if
the if the home run in the in the walk's
changed the mentality of what winning baseball is all about,

(30:34):
then does it matter where Jose l two they is
standing tonight when Carlos Gonzalez is up to bed We're
playing the Rockies tonight and he plays in short right
field and that and that's all Carlos Gonzalez wants to do,
Then then I'm defending the sport. I mean, if they
put the rules in play for us to have to
play like an offside rule and you want to draw
a line behind second base, then roll of by by it.
But um, as long as the hour, my job as

(30:56):
the managers to put our players in a position where
the outs are made the out and made to the
pull side. For a tremendous amount of players nowadays, um,
and they don't want to concede the homer, and they
want they don't want the single, then I'm not going
to defend it. And and so it will be up
to baseball to make some sort of radical move if
that's what is best for the sport. I'm not convinced
it is. Well, hope you had a great off day.
You got too in Denver, then the rival against Texas,

(31:19):
then you go to Seattle, very game team who's playing
good baseball. And then you get you know, the Dodgers,
they get what they would consider a rematch now adding
Manny Machado. So obviously some tough games here in the
middle of the season before you get to the stretch. Run.
Really appreciate your time, Amazed by your team's consistency coming
off the World Series win, and wish you nothing but
health and luck the rest of the way. Thanks for
joining us, You guys appreciate me having all right, that's

(32:01):
bring in Dan Buyer find out what else is going
on in the world sports. J H was great, by
the way, absolutely great, and Doug, you wished him great health.
You could also wish great health to Gary Sanchez. The
Yankees have placed the catcher on the ten day to
sabled list with a groin strain. Even more intriguing following
last night's affair when he ran slow down the baseline

(32:23):
making the final out against the Raves. Some city wasn't hustling.
Sanchez admitted he could have done a better job running
last night. Now it's been revealed that he's dealing with
a groin strain, something he dealt with in the first
half of the season. Gary Sanchez going to the ten
day DL. Marlins beat the Braves earlier in day Baseball
nine three. And by the way, Austin Roman has been
been the better catcher, been a better player, uh than Sanchez.

(32:45):
Remember two years ago, Sanchez set the world on fire.
It was nineteen home runs in like forty six games
or so, and now he's being clowned. Pretty fun, pretty
happily so on on Twitter for his slow jaunt to
first base. Rams running Todd Gurley got a four year
contract extension that I'll pay him forty five million dollars
guaranteed sixty million dollars over the length of the deal.

(33:07):
NFL Network says Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones won't report
to camp on Thursday. He wants a new contract. And
Kevin Love's got a new deal. Cavalier send the forward
to a four year extension worth one hundred and twenty
million dollars. Doug, Kevin Love loves Cleveland or loves getting paid.
Doug got them show rolls on Fox Sports Radio. Todd
Gurley just got paid. You heard that Kevin Love just

(33:28):
got paid? But is Todd Gurley a top four running
back in the NFL? We'll discuss next. Car shopping can

Doug got Lip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Doug gotlam Shure

(33:54):
here on Fox Sports Radio. Uh, and his Cander is
gonna join us in studio. Third hour or second next hour, right,
Brian scal Brandy Connor borrowin still to come. Let's get
caught up on a game. This is game time side
on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Dan Buyer. What's the game today, Doug?

(34:17):
The game today is alright. Todd Gurley's in the news.
He's got a four year contract extension. We're at the
reported sixty million dollars million dollars guaranteed. Doug ranked the
top three running backs in the National Football League now
that girlies. Maybe it doesn't change with girlies contract. But
who are the top three running backs in the NFL?

(34:40):
Two young guys the top? I like younger rather than older. Um,
I'm torn between Zeke and Todd Gurley. I'm gonna go
with Todd Gurley. I do think Zeke Elliott, by all accounts,
is better pass protection, which is like the third element
that not enough people talk about, right everybody about running
it and catching it. People are talking enough about us pro.

(35:00):
He's great and pass pro, but I'm gonna go with
Todd Gurley. I think, um, he's probably better at feel like,
he's better at catching it out of the backfield. He's
a terrific runner. He may not be the runner, the
power runner of of Ezeki Elliott, but I'll go Todd
Gurley one Ezeke Elliott too. I'll put Levy on Bell three.
Remember we're still there's still David Johnson, who's incredible, he

(35:22):
has been hurt past two years. Leonard four Nette, who's
just more of a just a hammer. Say, Kwan Barkley
might be a little bit overrated because of how much
better he is than others that are drafted this year,
but in terms of his all around skill set, Kareem
Hunt Alvin Kamarow is great at catching it. Probably not
in every down back, but an unbelievable versatile weapon. Melvin

(35:45):
Gordon didn't mention love him for the Chargers, But I'll
go with Gurley, Zeke Lean one to three. Al Right.
There was other contract news in the sports world today,
This from the NBA as Kevin Love got a four
year extension to stay with the Cavaliers. So Doug and
Ring next season rank the top three most important Cavaliers. Yes,
for nineteen season. I'll go with Colin Sexton their first

(36:09):
round pick um because remember he's basically placing Kyrie and
a little bit of Lebron. I think it's gonna be
a transition year for me. He's not a great shooter,
he's not a great pastor. He's incredible defender and incredible athlete.
He'll score something, He'll learn a bunch, They'll learn absolutely
a bunch. I'll go sex in one love too, and
I'll go to Tristan Thompson three. I think they're gonna

(36:30):
change the way they play. They gotta get more out
of Tristan Thompson if they want to be modestly successful.
You know, for as much of a changeover, it is
a lot of the faces we've got to know and love,
I guess are staying around. Sure, I mean they look
they're putting themselves in position, uh for when those deals
expire to have some calp space to be able to
kind of move some things around. But right now they're

(36:52):
in a little bit of cap hill. Now. There was
a report out of China saying that a team in
the Chinese Basketball Association was offering Dwyane Wade a three
your contract, which would make him the highest paid player
in that league. Doug, Remember hears the lenewear Chinese shoes.
Does he wear Chinese shoes? Yeah, there's some apparel deal. Yeah. Yeah.
And so China wants to the a team in the

(37:14):
Chinese Basketball Association wants to bring him over to play
with your international experience playing and coaching and even just
dealing with international basketball. Ranked the top three countries outside
of the United States to play pro basketball in what
just to get paid to live? Put it all together, yeah,

(37:35):
decipher it out like it is the money so much
better in China that it's worth going there as opposed
to Spain or something. Well, you know, money can be
obscene in China and in Turkey as well. Now Russia,
I can, I would go. I'd still go Spain one.
Italy is not what it used to be financially, but

(37:56):
it's still Italy, right, Like, would you like to play
bad basketball and live in Italy? Like, yeah, I can
do that. Yeah that's good, high level, good enough. I'll
go Spain one, Italy two, and then uh, frankly, I'll
go Russia three. Um. The teams at the top are

(38:16):
very competitive financially if you can be in Moscow or
be in St. Petersburg. Uh, those are the first world
parts of the country, and you get paid a hundred
all bills American hun dollar bills used to be Greece.
Greece because of the finances. I wouldn't. Greece is a
great place to live, but you get half as much
as you're told you're gonna get. I would go away

(38:37):
from Greece. We'll go Spain, Italy, Greece. No, Lithuania. Duania
is amazing. The top teams Lutovas, Ritas and jall Gris
are incredible. But no, not what the Ball brothers were. Finally, Doug,
rank your top three summer vacations that you've taken in
your life. I'm not really a summer vacation guy, to
be honest. Like we didn't we we would go back

(38:57):
east to visit my my in law, I'll my family,
my parents, families. But if I had to do like
we just got back from Maine, my kids go to
camp in Maine. I freaking love Maine. It is amazing.
There's ice cream shops everywhere. Um. I understand the weather
is not always like that, but the weather is incredible
this time of year. I go main one, main one
stay cation too. That's because I live where everybody else

(39:19):
wants to come vacation. And we spent a good week
and a half. My wife and I like laying out
in the back on the back pool, be like, why
are we going anywhere else? This is the best, Oh,
I guess. According to MS on The Duck Godly Show,
I haven't been to Jackson Hall. I've heard great things.
I want to go to Croatia, but I've never been.
It was in Israel last summer. It's incredible. I think

(39:41):
you meant Stateside. I'll put Tahoe three. What about you?
I love a now you know, going out east. Love
a trip to Boston. So the Northeast where we made
it up to Maine. Uh, nice d C trip. And
I always love the Southeast, Love Georgia, South Carolina, to
love it all too hot, too hot in the summer,
too hot, um spring in d C. I I love
d C. But it's spring in d C and in

(40:01):
New York and fall in d C. In New York
better summer in Maine. Summer in Boston is in fact better.
A little patience can go a long way also little
perspective why Michigan should do nothing sitting wait next in
the Doug Gotlip Show, What Updug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio,
Coming to you from beautiful sunny southern California. All the

(40:24):
pack twelve coaches are in town. I know the restaurant
they're gonna be dining at. You might want to crash,
Not because I want to hang, kind of because I
want to hang like Chip Kelly and Todd Hilton's good
dude as well, good Southern dude, West Kentucky dude. More
than anything, I like when other people pick up the tab.

(40:45):
My wife and I we had a good run going, Ramos,
good run going. We had five straight dinners where somebody
else picked up the tab and I went to the card.
Every time I even took out the card, We're like, no, no, no, no,
I insist whatever, Like are you if we were like
keeping the tracker like there's four, a row, five and
a row? Yes? Uh Ryan Music. Were any of those

(41:07):
dinners making you nervous that they would call your bluff
and you would actually have to pick up the tab? Yes,
yes there was. There was one to which I was like, damn.
And then I took my mom out to dinner, which
is like the most expensive of them, and it was
just plays take place in my hometown of Orange, California,
and place Orange Hill Restaurant, little pricy, great view of
all of Soca of Orange County. You can actually see

(41:29):
all this in California clear day, all the way out
to Catalina and whatever, downtown l A, almost into the valley.
Uh but I mean, like, you know your you take
your mom out to dinner, Like, what are you gonna
gonna do? Right? Plus when we're out of town, she
watches my dog, takes care of the little things, and
she's my mom. So uh but yes, there were some
like please don't please, don't take to please, please don't

(41:52):
run my card. Please don't run my card. Anyway, let's
just complete nutter honesty. Who you follow is as important
as who you work for many times in the job.
Um so I've occupied what it was three to six

(42:12):
East coast time, twelve to three West coast time now
for six years. And if you go back to when
I was doing four to seven, which is uh one
to four West coast time, we're talking a good ten

(42:32):
years now, ten years. You got your boy and there
was when I was at the CBS portraying we were
not on satellite radio. Happy to be on sate satellite radio.
But if you wanted to find me, you could find me.
But there's this still is the look. So three to
six East, four to sixties whatever, four to seven, I've

(42:54):
been around this to this time's lot so um. But
part of what I was able to do the first
place that was was it was a revolving door. You know,
they always had a bunch of different shows. They could
never get somebody to stabilize it. So I was We
did great in sales there and it took them a

(43:16):
long time to get anywhere near the number which we
were hitting sales wise after I left. And the reason
was simply consistency. Like I like to think that we
give you, hey, what's the sports topics of the day,
talk about them, give your opinion, and give you good
We had E. J. Hinchon last hour. I thought that
was a really interesting baseball discussion. And his cancer is
gonna join us. Balian Scalabriniuh. We even have Connor Barrowiner

(43:38):
just signed with the Giants. Like we try and get
great guests, give you good, strong opinions hit as many
topics keep it. We don't get kind of stuck in
what you call survey radio, what's the best college football
game of the fall? Watching to call eight seven seven
nine odd Fox, Like we want to be better than that, right,

(43:58):
want to be better than that, But I do. I'm understand.
I understand that what I followed initially when I was
the ESPN Radio made it really easy for me to
go like, hey, you should pay me more. You know,
I look at the numbers now versus what we were
was previous there, knowing that they kind of had a
revolving door. They're kind of a turnstyle there. When I
got to CBS Sports Traded, we started from scratch, so

(44:20):
of course you're up a million percent of a million
percent versus nothing, but then you're you're competing against yourself
in subsequent years, and we did better coming here. I
know the man who preceded me, this has kind of
been a little bit of revolving door time slot. But
the guy proceded me like there was some good, there
was some bad, But I also knew that if you
could just consistently deliver on the sports topics of today,

(44:42):
and our numbers are way up in comparison to what
they were previously. I benefiting from who precedes you is
a big thing, a big thing. Um. And I think
in you know, when Colin left, like they've seen kind
of the opposite of it. Right, he was doing so

(45:03):
well that anyone who came in would struggle in comparison,
struggle because he was doing so well. Like, yeah, everybody says,
I want that time slot, I want to replace him, Like, Okay,
you gotta live up to all of what they've been
able to do. Really impressive. Um. I look at Michigan,
and I listened to a lot of the plaver of

(45:27):
fans of Michigan. I listened to some of the rhetoric
of people who are on local and national radio and
on TV saying that Jim Harbas. I heard Clay Travis
say Jim Harba was like with the most most over
hyped coach in the history of college football. And I
don't think people take into account not just who preceded

(45:48):
him and what was left to him, because it wasn't
all bad. But I do think that people don't really
understand all of the other things at play and what
leads you to be success. Here's a report. Do we
know who asked this question? It's actually a very fair question,
and it's actually a very professionally asked question. Right. It

(46:11):
wasn't a hot seat question. It wasn't a do you
have to how many games you have to win and
not get fired questions? Here was a question Big Ten
meeting day. Jim Harbaugh did not offer up a great
answer with what I thought was a really fair and
honest question. Take a listen. He came into an arbor
with perhaps the most hype of any coach in the

(46:32):
history of the Big Ten, maybe in all of college football.
A few years later, you're got a third place, third
place in fourth place finish, and you're one in five
against Michigan State and Ohio State. What do you have
to do this year to demonstrate to the Michigan community
that you are on the path to achieving what they
hired you to achieve. Well, the improvement will lead to

(46:55):
successful lead to championships, which is a very bland answer her. Okay, Now,
part of the lure to Jim Harbaugh was not just
that he would get after recruiting, which he has obviously
this year was not as good a year. Not just that, uh,

(47:17):
that he had had success success elsewhere, because so too
had Brady Hoke and Rich Rodriguez who preceded him. But
he was a Michigan man, a former Michigan coach who
totally got it, understood what it took. And I find
the rewriting of history from Michigan fans from other Big
Ten fans to be laughable and embarrassing. Brady Hoke was

(47:41):
a bad football coach. He was not a good football
coach when he's there. Brady Hoke is a by all accounts,
a great dude, and he had done a good job
at Ball State in San Diego State before he got
to Michigan. But he took over Michigan and his first
year they went eleven. And to remember it, Rodriguez was hated.

(48:01):
Rich Rodriguez came over from West Virginia, tried to run
a completely different style, completely different system. Lloyd Carr stabbed
him the back fifty times over, and Rich Rodriguez did
nothing to endear himself to Lloyd Carr. Yeah, the old
longtime head coach that didn't want to retire, that was
retired probably a little bit before he wanted to be.

(48:22):
And Rich Rodriguez, it was not a Michigan dude who
hired bad defensive coordinators, tried to run the really cute
three three five defense and it never worked. Rich rog
win three and nine, five and seven, seven and six.
Brady Hoak went eleven and to his first year eight
and five, seven and six, five and seven, never put
on a headset, didn't coach offense, didn't coach defense, just

(48:43):
kind of recruited. The team was sort of a mess.
Hardball won twenty games his first two years. Last year
obviously was a disappointment, not just with the eight and
five record in the fourth place finished, but the fact is, uh,
they lost the Back Bowl as well. But what's curiously

(49:05):
absent is all of the other kind of mitigating factors, right,
mitigating factors, like I understand where I was previously both
of those two stops. There wasn't competition from Fox Sports.
Fox Sports Radio didn't have Dan Patrick, Colin Calherd, Clay Travis,

(49:28):
and me. So yeah, it's going to be harder for
those people to compete with the numbers that we had there,
not just because I don't think they're as good as
we are, not just on air, but in terms of
production and leadership and management. But also they're competing against
a much more difficult opponent. That's what's happened at Michigan.

(49:51):
When Brady Hope was first at Michigan, Ohio State was
going through a coaching change. Remember Jim Trussell was fired
because of the helied about the goal pants and what
he knew in Terrell Prior, etcetera, etcetera. Penn State was
going through the end of Joe Paterno, and of course
all the ugliness with the Cherry Sandusky thing that was
during Brady Hoax. Run there, go back and look Michigan State,

(50:20):
who had had never in the modern era of football,
been consistently you had Mark D'Antonio was. He's a good coach,
he runs a good program. He's produced a lot of
NFL caliber running backs and quarterbacks. The fact is the reason,
the big reason that Michigan State was able to win
was Penn State was down and Michigan was down, and

(50:41):
Ohio State went through a coaching change. Now hardball walks
in and Penn State was up and running because of
Bill O'Brien and then James Franklin and all the talent
that they had. Michigan State was has been outstanding in
terms of their town. And of course they've taken a
dive here these past couple of years. Why because Penn

(51:03):
State and Michigan are just better and Ohio State has
been a down and program in the league. The opponents
are tougher, the schedule has been unrelenting, and until now
hardball hasn't had an the lead caliber quarterback. You've got
Shaye Patterson now. And if you think that doesn't matter,

(51:27):
simply look at what happened when he was at Stanford
four eight, five and seven, eight and five, twelve and one.
Who's the quarterback when he's twelve and one? I mean
l Josh Johnson. I think it was a kid's name.
He's a backup quarterback um in the NFL when he's
at San Diego. Once he got him, he started winning
San Diego. You need a quarterback, you need time, but

(51:47):
you also need the perspective of what did you inherit
and who were they playing against as opposed to who
you're playing against now. The Big Ten has gone from
a laughing stock league. In big boy football, it was
thick legged and slow and archaic in nature. They had
to evolve, so you know what they did they threw

(52:08):
a ton of money and coaches. They went out and
got the best of the best of the best. And
Wisconsin is good, Nebraska is gonna be good with Scott Frost.
Penn's State is damn good. Michigan State is damn good.
Hello the Northwestern Everybody thinks Pat fri Cheryl is good,

(52:29):
but he's competing against the big tennis a hard deal.
So I'm not telling you that you can't have reasonably
high expectations with hardball. But if not for the Fluke
lost to Michigan State, the Flukey lost to Ohio State
two years ago, the idea of being was it one
in five against Michigan State in Ohio State, that goes

(52:50):
kind of out the window. The league finishes disappointing, but
not the end of the world. Two years ago they
lost what was it, three games by four points total?
Come on, we're doing here. And if you're Michigan and
you think that it's a coaching problem, it's a hardball problem.

(53:12):
Here's my question to you, who is more proven than hardball?
Who wanted San Diego at Stanford with the San Francisco
for n Who is it? Who's the guy who if
you're going to fire Hardball and pay him um team
millions of dollars to not coach at his alma mater.
Who's going to be better? Who is a more sure

(53:34):
fire bet that's going to take that job. My guess
is that a lot of the palaver about Hardball underachieving
comes frankly from Big Ten fans, not of Michigan, because
they know it's not a matter of if, it's a
matter of when they get that quarterback thing figured out
and they start winning lots and lots and lots of games,

(53:59):
not if, but when. And to the Michigan fans who
suddenly have great expectations, they too forget exactly like Lloyd Carr,
great coach, right, awesome coach won a national title and
won a national title? What year was that? That was nine?
I think, right, two thousands of the bull game. Sure

(54:25):
was the coach for eight more years, nine more years,
double digitson wins only three more times. Rich Rodriguez, Brady
Hoke combined, they were there for seven years, double digitson
win one times, been there three years, he's won double
digits twice. That'll be fine, message board dude, that's become

(54:51):
Twitter dude, that's become streamer on the radio. Call in, dude,
take a breath. Big ten is really good. It's really hard.
They finally got in their quarterback. Who you follow and
who they're competing against is as important as anything else.
We've all had a bad day in the golf course. Sadly,
it's not always easy to find the way to fix

(55:12):
your golf game. But it's easy to check your engine
light at auto zone. The free Auto Zone Fixed Finder
tool will find the likely issues, saving you money down
the road getting the zone Auto Zone And as cantor
of the Knicks joins the show, I'll ask him how
close he was to opting out and what this has
been like to play with Russ, to play with Zinger

(55:33):
and to be the focal point of so much NBA discussion,
And as cantor in studio next, broadcasting live car shopping
can be confusing with terms like dealer price, list price,
an invoice price. True Car shows what other people paid
for the car you want, so you can recognize a
good price when you're ready to buy a new or
use car. Visit True Car and they enjoy more confident

(55:54):
car buying experience. Well, I've Doug otlip show a Fox
Sports Radio and uh super happy to have Ennis Cantor
of the New York Knicks. Still love the New York
Knicks joining us in in studio. There's a ton of
things I want to get to, um Man. You want
to start at the start, all right, Look, you didn't

(56:15):
ever get a chance to play in Kentucky never, Okay,
but you you were playing overseas, and look I kind
of knew the deal. Like I covered college bass, We've
done so for fifteen years, and most people thought you
would ever play there just because of how the n
A would view your your eligibility. You want to come
clean where you really you're you're pro before you're playing Kentucky. Right,

(56:38):
let me, I'll make it clear, man. And I don't
think I ever said set up to any media before.
I think that's the first time I'm saying it here.
I had an IQ deal, you know what. I had
a ni QD in overseas when I was what deal?
Nike deal? Oh yeah, a Nike deal. Yeah, of course
I was sixteen years old, but I didn't know. I
didn't know the rules. That's the thing. I had an
IQ deal. I took some money with expenses. You know,

(57:00):
it's normal because you started getting paid when you're like
fourteen fifteen years old in Europe. It's normal. And then, uh,
you know, I try to come here. They offered me
a lot of money in Turkey. Ye say to stay
six years. It was a very very good money. By
the way, speaking of Nike, we're both we're we're shoe
brothers because we both have the fly Knit, the fly
Knit air Force air Force ones. And then, uh, you know,

(57:21):
I turned on million dollars to just come here to
play college basketball. So you know, I can go to school,
learn a language, learn another culture, and play basketball the
same time and enter the draft as well as I can. Well,
when they said you cannot play college basketball permanently ever, yeah,
it just broke my heart. I see. I here's the thing.
I knew that you had had the Nike deal, and

(57:43):
I knew that you'd gotten some sort of payments. But
I also think that there should be some I agree,
like there should be the ability for even guys who
are paid profession to play overseas to come and play
in college. It makes college basketball better and it would
increase your readiness for the NBA. That's what I'm saying, man,
because like all the people want to come to play
college basketball and go to school same time. Well get

(58:03):
the education same time. But when he said, oh, you know,
I'm sorry, we sorry, we cannot let you play, it
just it just it was so frustrating for me because
turning down all the all the money to just come
and go to play and see a basketball like no,
I just come home. All right, So and it's cancer.
You're only twenty six years old. Let's let's let's go
to this offseason or the season ends, ok and you

(58:26):
have a decision to make. And there were some reports,
oh he's opting out, and then I you took the
Twitter like trying to make a decision here relaxed, Um,
was there a time in which you had decided to
opt out? I promised to the last day. I didn't know.
I didn't know if I was gonna. I made my
decision the last day. Okay, but okay, season ends. In

(58:49):
your mind, you're thinking I'm gonna opt out. I even
told her the media, I think I'm thinking about opting out.
And then uh, you know, when the and then like
the after the draft, all the people were saying, but like, man,
you know, the summer is not good, the money is
not there, whatever, and I wanted to I didn't. Of course,
everybody cares about money, but I wanted to stay in
New York and sign a long term contract with me.

(59:12):
But I think they really try to get like a
big free agent next year. They said they want to
get to next year. They want to day. So that's
why I like, you know what, I just like play
a more year and then see how it goes. What
did your agent tell you was out there for you?
Realistically out there for you had you decided to opt out.
They actually know it was actually the money was terrible.
And then he gave me some you know, five teams.

(59:34):
You know, of course I think I was actually everybody
with the bucks thing whatever. So you gave me, give
me some few teams. But I was like, you know what,
I think right now the best place for me to
just play one more year and then go from there. Okay,
So so the Knicks are in this interesting position. You
got prezingis coming back at some point. We think this
year there has been talking about them shelving him, getting

(59:55):
him to resign, and and look the Knicks have also
this year. You guys, position yourself for a draft pick.
Kevin knots an the Kentucky kid. Well, I think it's
gonna be fantastic. He's only eighteen years old, play well
in the summer league. He does play some four. I
know you think he's a three. He plays some four.
Which is the liberty of your spot. Um, what's it
like to play on a team to which most people

(01:00:17):
think you're trying to lose? Like, how do you how
do you games going on? Like is that in your
mind at all? Actually? No, man, because like I remember
the GM, the GM of the Knicks was texting us
and mhmm, you're having a meeting with us every before
the game and saying, hey, we are trying to win. Yes,
I'm not where. There had to be games which you're

(01:00:37):
playing well. And then it's in the fourth course close game,
like you're coming out you're like, whoa wait what so
so the GM can say we're trying to win, but
based upon who they play at the end of the
game media I was like, Hey, they pay me to
go out there and win. They're not paying me to lose.
So that's not I came from winning culture Oklahoma City. Yes,

(01:00:58):
there's no way I'll go out there, we'll get a
drafting and there's that, so we lose. No, I'm going
out there to play my hardest play on the person
and try to win. That's it, and nobody can change
my going out And even this year, I don't care
how good the team, how bad the team is. I'm
trying to win every game and it's Cancer New York.
Next joining us to Gatlip show Fox Sports Trading before
we get to Oklahoma City, you're first in Utah and

(01:01:20):
right before you were trading you started to kind of
make your make your mark there. Um, what's your impression
of why Utah? Even though they've they've made some moves
that they've seemingly gotten better there has become kind of
a is that, Quinn? What is it? What is it
that's allowed them to take I've seen with Dennis Lindsay,
he's an amazing gym and we do you know Queenn,
he's ever very very he was there was one of

(01:01:41):
the you know, the top three coaches this year. But
I think with that with them too, I think did
the whole organization, we went through the next level and
I think, you know, they they've been doing an amazing job,
you know, building the players. You know, I think Utah
was maybe three times better before I was there. When

(01:02:03):
I was there, Um, okay, what about Hayward. There's a
lot of people who have There are people now who like, look,
Gordon Hayward's okay, if the boss the self is gonna move,
somebody move Hayward. I was like, look, and I know
he wasn't an All Star when you play with him,
but he has improved every year. He wasn't All Stars
last year before he became a free and signed with
the Celtics. For people who don't have never played with

(01:02:24):
Gordon Hayward, don't know him. What about his game has
allowed him to he was an All Star in the
West and get him to where he should be All
Star in the East as well. I mean one thing
about golf. Start amazing teammates, making everybody better, else better
around him. And you know if they just I mean,
he's he's a good guy on the court off the court,
and people are saying, oh, just this guy that I

(01:02:45):
think that did have a really good team to adjation,
just go go for him because they got Tatum, they
got you know, the Jaylon Brown, Jaylon Brown, they got
Gordon Award. They have an amazing team. I think I
wouldn't trade anybody, man, They'll be tough decision. No, okay,
So you get to Oklahoma City. What was that like
when they had you have k D, you got Russ?

(01:03:06):
What was that locker room like? As my first time
playing it with superstars? First time? Because I get in
the locker room there, Katie and Dot locker room Ross
in Dot locker room, we got a surgeons Stephen. I'm like, okay,
this is like what the real tim feels like. So
I mean I get in there by this this sad thing.
It killed me because that year Russ got hurt, Katie

(01:03:26):
got hurt, Stephen got hurt, and we missed the playoffs
by helf game by one by one one. Anthony Davis
three point shot, crazy shot. That's the only That's the
only three he made all seasons. Anthony Davis made a
three that year. It wasn't it was like twenty year.
I might have been middle almost middle of the season. Anyway,
he made the last second three to beat Oklahoma City

(01:03:47):
in Oklahoma City was his only three he made the
entire season, and that ended up keeping you out of
playoffs and that. Remember that was the year Katy miss
fifty one games with broken broken Broken, Broken, broken foot.
But what was the dynamics like with k D. And
it's good man, because playing players like k D Ross
or like you know, the superstars like him or even
like KP like these people, those those superstar will take

(01:04:10):
you to the next level because you cannot relax around him,
you know, especially with ross Man, because you could. For him,
it's not a game, it's a war every night. And uh,
you know, people try to do everything to win the game.
And then when when you see May he's a superstar,
he's going that hard. I was like, you know what
I think? Um, what went wrong when you guys dropped three? One? Oh? Man?

(01:04:33):
Well that's serious. We can never forget. The playoff series
are seven games you can never forget. I think we
relax a little bit. And I remember after the game,
almost everybody was crying. I was crying because we got
we got the fun we had the ring game. Game
six was the game six was the one play was
crazy and and Kadi was awful. Katie forced it. He looked,

(01:04:57):
he looked, how much how much of it look In
watching that series between Stephen and Andre Andre robertson the
fact that they couldn't shoot. It was like three on five, right, Like,
basically Golden State was putting two guys in the zone
and doubling k d and helping on Russ every time
they drove, and and you didn't get a lot of run, right, yes, yeah,

(01:05:20):
and and everybody said, well he can't. Well but no,
everybody's point out your defense. But you guys needed actually
more offense in order to in order to keep up
with them. Um, how much of the frustration that led
Katie to leaving was that series. Every time he put
the ball on the deck, there were two guys on him.
It was it was tough, man, because like like you said,

(01:05:41):
I mean they were doubling Kadi, they were doubling you know,
the ross and everything. But I think and then later
will be trying to and then search, and then later
I think we try to if you doubt that's what
we were up by three one and then like game five,
he's like, okay, you know, even if you lose this game,
you gotta go back home and the game, right, But
that's why we lost the game. She's been almost like

(01:06:02):
it was impossible to almost get a game like that
that Clay Thompson game six. It's as good as anyone's
ever shot them all I can I can remember. Okay,
So where were were you when you found out Katie
was leaving and gold to Golden State. I was actually
on the airport, check my phone? What what aport c
I can't even remember my airport, but I checked my
phone on Twitter and say, oh, you know my next chapter.

(01:06:25):
I'm like, are you kidding? So what were the texts
like between teammates? Actually? First whatever it is, nobody texted
each other like I texted, you know what not many
people know this man. I texted KD that in that airport,
I texted Kate is a man, good luck and this
and that he hit back. He did hit me back
to yes, and you just say we got we got

(01:06:48):
no problem between me and you were good, thank you
something like that. And then like later on that I
learned that he didn't text. He didn't say it anybody.
That's because you were like more more than thine were
like family, are like brothers. And then it's not why,
it's it's how he did it. You know. I didn't
say nobody in nothing, and then I was nobody was

(01:07:10):
expecting to join him to because they just wont seven
or three games. They don't need no help. And then
when I heard that, it was killed me in my heart.
That come on, we're like brothers. So first time you
saw Russ after it, what did he say? We actually
because it was a very awkward and very weird moment,
so we did not talk about it at all. We

(01:07:32):
did not say nothing. It was like, you know what,
you go from there, We're gonna keep moving forward. And
then just just chip everybody his first time back in
Oklahoma City. Everybody had the cupcakes. You guys were talking
a ton of trash, you in person, you in particular,
we're talking trash. What were you saying? We are? I
think they're gonna fight away Russell Westbrook And then actually

(01:07:54):
didn't play that game because I freaking broke my arm
funding a chair. But uh think I think that game
I was like I never seen even I played Western
Conference Finals, I did not see any game like this
that that that the whole gene was blown out. It
was amazing. Yeah, it was like a college atmosphere, that's
the thing. So I played Oklahoma State and what people

(01:08:14):
now know in the NBA about Oklahoma City and the
Thunder like that's what the fans were back then about
Oklahoma State basketball. It's only major sport. They love it.
And then with the Thunder that they you know, the
city and Thunder goes like saying, taking through the other level,
it's good. So so it's interesting though. I remember when
it happened last off season. We talked to you on
the radio, which is you know, Oklahoma City was all

(01:08:35):
about loyalty and then you end up getting sent to
the New York Knicks. Was it a phone call? Did
you get it from your agent? It was weird. I
was actually doing a basketball camp for orphans, and then
my manager assistant of all the things, like I'm actually
working with orphans, and then my manager like brought me
the phone. I was like, hey, you need to take this.

(01:08:56):
I'm like, hey, man, no, I'm middle of the camp.
I was taking later that No, no, no, it's important.
I put the phone on my ears, like what and
then you know, my you know, my you guy said
it was not. San Francy was one of my age
and one of my managers. He said, he don't look
too happy. You just got traded to things, because then

(01:09:16):
he knows I love a lot. I love New York
a lot a lot of people. You know, I've known
a lot a lot of people there. I'm like, oh
my god, I look at my phone. I look at
my phone. There's all this takes oldest mis calls alldes
like Twitter to say things whatever notifications. I'm like, oh
my god, I think I really did get traded and
this cancer join us New York Next Gallup show Fox
Sports Radio. So you go from a championship caliber team,

(01:09:40):
you go from playing with the m v P so
professionally like, look, you want to win, but now you
get to go to a team where you're in New York,
where you could be more comfortable. There are people to
speak your language, you cook the food that you grew
up on. You can feel more comfortable, right, incredibly diverse city,
and you get to start so so like it's like,
look do I want to do I want to win more? Yeah,
but I also want to play and play more. I

(01:10:01):
don't think enough people ask about things like that. What's
that like to know you're competing on a team that's
not gonna win a championship, but you're going to get
to explore more and explain your game one. It's so
tough to focus for every night because I remember month
of February last year, we only won one game. The
whole month, We've just been one game, and then every

(01:10:21):
night the locker room was so frustrating and so bad.
I'm like, come on, man, we need to that. The
episode was terrible. It was like it was dead. And
then I was like, you know what we gotta I didn't.
I mean I learned better in a cay see. We
need to keep moving forward with you need to keep fighting.
And then we try to fight, but like we lost KP,
we lost Team Hart of it for like nineteen games.

(01:10:43):
It was so hard because like I knew, I knew
what were capable of doing, and then we just couldn't
do it. It It was so frustrating, and then the fans
will started to bing us. I'm like, oh my god,
this is getting worse. What do you think about Lebron
going to l A. Well, okay, uh, I think, well
he lost so many finalsst six finals. Last thing you

(01:11:04):
just that's is like the last whatever years in his career.
He just wanted to game here, build this brand more.
It's l A you know. But one thing, man, this
is Kobe is a Magic So I'll say he just
joined the Kobe's Magic. Yeah. I mean, like, look, im,
I grew up here and it was Magic's team and
then they were bad for a couple of years, and
then you know, with Shaq and Kobe, and even Shaq

(01:11:26):
and Kobe, they couldn't win and it became shat Kobe's team,
and then it was Kobe's team. Like I kind of
think that's a little bit overplay. It becomes if you win,
they embraced you, and he's gonna win. I just I wonder.
I feel like most people in the league think the
Warriors got one more year in him and then guys
started to go their separate way. Is that is that
a fair statement? It is a fair spiritment. I think so.

(01:11:47):
But I think with the Lebron think, let me ask
you this, do you think he can deal with Maggie
Lance and busy and wrong? I think so. And I'll
tell you why. I think they're coming off the bench.
I think they're all one year deals and I think
if they don't buy in that, they're gone. As you know, like,
look is different when the dude walks in and he's
got you know, if it's mellow, and he's got no

(01:12:08):
trade clause. You're making twenty seven million, and there's a
lot of hoops to have to go through. Like there's
guys have. It's a different way in which a guy
is treated as opposed to Hey, dude, if you don't
buy into what Lebron and what what we're doing, then
we'll get rid of you. It's fine, We got rid
of a whole team of guy's. Last is fair. It
is fair, but at about perfection professionalism. They got a

(01:12:29):
lot of characters personal but Jr. Was a huge character
before you play with him. That's true, that's true, that's true.
How are you gonna deal with LaVar bull? I think again,
you need to buy in or you're gone. Dude. We'll
find another that's play. But I think his dad puts

(01:12:51):
so much pressure on him that every guard or every
player in the league want to just bring him on
that if his dad leave him alone a little bit,
and I think you know he's going to do it,
do his thing. He's every really towns a players, skilled player,
but his dad just talks too much and just put
so much pressure on him. Do you have insider information
on who's going to join the next next year. Actually

(01:13:14):
I do warrant, but I can tell what I tell.
But it is one of the superstars, does it? Does
his name ride with Smarrie Loving. I can't talk about him,
but his name Ryan was Smimly Letler. Oh my god.
I think next year we're gonna get for sure one
or two superstars. But I think that's what I think. Nick,

(01:13:37):
the Knicks focus on two thousand nineteen. Last thing and
most important thing we've had you on before, obviously the
government of Turkey. I don't agree with with the leadership
and some of the things politically. Can you go home?
Are you allowed to go home? Uh? To go visit
your friends and family? Surely not? Man, still not. That's
still struggling because I mean I can't go. The sad

(01:13:58):
thing is even my family cannot go because you know,
they took their passport, they cannot travel here. I try to,
you know, just bring him back here, bring him to America,
but they said, no, you can't leave the country. Because
every time then I say something there you know, we
can't put them, put your guys in jail, and just
trying to sell the very sad man crazy stuff. Listen,
love what you do on social media more than anything.

(01:14:20):
Can't how much I appreciate coming. Yeah, and we can't
wait to see you working out with hoodie mellow. What
do you're gonna work out together? Let's let's let's get
you damn buy or find out? What else going on sports?
What about Devin Currant in the Knicks uniform? How about
that one? I don't know maybe maybe. By the way,
there are now nine lottery picks on the New York

(01:14:42):
Knicks and as cantor as a new teammate, they send
Noah von Ley today, So yes, it is back up.
Eight is enough. Nine is plenty in New York. Other
New York news to pass along, this time in Major
League Baseball, Yankees place catcher Gary Sanchez on the tandity
with a growing strain. Back to hoops w The Cavaliers
gave forward Kevin Love a four your extension worth one
and twenty million dollars. Leve will make four million dollars

(01:15:05):
next season and then the four year extension will kick in.
Speaking of four year extensions, Todd Gurley got one from
the Rams Is. The running back is reportedly set to
make forty five million dollars guaranteed as part of this
new extension. The total value of the deal is worth
sixty million dollars as Gurly is now under contract through
the twenty three season. NFL Network says Falcon's wide receiver

(01:15:27):
Julio Jones won't report to training camp on Thursday because
he wants a new contract. And though Sam Donald that
Jets camp didn't report with the other rookies because because
the quarterback still doesn't have a contract. Doug back to you,
all right, thanks Dan, Doug Otli Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Does Jimmy Garoppolo have confidence or is he arrogant? We'll
discuss next. Online shopping can be confusing, Well not anymore.

(01:15:52):
With True Price from True Car. Now you can know
the exact price you'll pay for your next car. So
visit Truecar and enjoy more confident car buying experience. Doug
Gotlap Show, Fox Sports Radio. And it's cantor and that's
that's how you win the meeting. That's one of those

(01:16:12):
deals to which I tell people this all the time.
When I talked to college teams and proteins alike, and
they asked it, like, well, what what should we tell
our guys? Like, you know, you just tell your guys,
really really simple. If you just have him in the
off season, go out do an interview like it buys
you so much good will. I mean, first, she's a
good dude anyway, Uh, super likable human being. But even

(01:16:32):
if he wasn't, when you're willing to have a conversation,
sit in chat, you know, before and after a segment
of radio or television, you end up almost getting a
past like it was anything ever in the future. Just
so smart, just such a smart guy. Anyway, that was
a great conversation. If you missed any of it, downloaded
Doug Gotlip Show podcast available daily on iTunes wherever you
collect your your iTunes you every day end the Dug

(01:16:57):
Got leaves. Shall we play you a portion of a
previous show on Fox Sports Radio or Fox Sports One.
Here was Shannon Sharp earlier today on Jimmy G's article
in Bleacher Report. A lot of guys that backed up
other great players feel that they're better than the starter.
I remember hearing Brady said that when he stepped in,
he felt that he was better than Drew Bled. So
when he first got to New England that Drew Bled

(01:17:19):
so obviously was not as accomplished as Tom Brady is
when Jimmy Garoppolo arrived in New England. But he was
the first hundred million dollar quarterback, so obviously the Patriots
thought a lot of Drew to give him that kind
of compensation. This is the way you have to think.
You don't think Steve Young thought he was better than
Joe Montano's doubt, no doubt whatsoever, even after four Super

(01:17:40):
Bowls MVP, he felt he was better. Completely agree, completely
great And And maybe it's me with a sports mentality,
or maybe this is just me being honest. But anybody
who thinks that Garoppolo thinking he's better than Brady is
somehow a problem or somehow different than anybody. I told
Con Cowardice at his couch today and I was like, look,
give me Ramos Music Buyer and your staff put this

(01:18:04):
show on Fox Sports one on Fox Sports Radio the
three hours previous to mine, support us, give us ads
an ad campaign, and I think we do pretty good. Hey,
That's that's the nature of being a competitor. And anyone
who doesn't have that competitive gene probably not an athlete.
Probably not an athlete. Um, all right, take away from

(01:18:30):
an his cant interview Ryan Music go I'm very curious
to know who this alleged superstar that is heavily considering
the Knicks next offseason. UM. I tend to think it
is Kyrie, that's what all the reports say, But he
didn't show much of a reaction to anyone, and he

(01:18:51):
seemed to allude that it would be someone else, which
only makes me think that it could be maybe Clay Thompson. Uh. Look,
there's a there's a ton of potential free agent, potential
free agents, uh next season? All right, just look out
potential NBA free agents in two thousand nineteen and you're

(01:19:12):
just blown away by the by the vast number. Though, um,
I mean it might be too soon to look it up,
but there actually is a list. Bleacher Report has Kemba
Walkers from New York that would make a ton of sense.
I don't know if you consider Kemba Walker a superstar.
Remember the Celtics. Everybody's talking about the Celtics and what

(01:19:33):
you do with the young players. Al Horford will be
a free agent, Chris Middleton will be a free agent.
That might not do it for you. I mentioned Kemba
Walker will be a free agent. Clay Thompson, You mentioned
Kevin Durant, Jimmy Butler will be a free agent. Um
Draymond Green will be a free agent that year as well.
So there are a lot of other dudes. Christophs Prezingis

(01:19:54):
could well be a free agent as he's a New
York Nick. The likelihood is like, we'll just see if
he signs him plays. I also think it's comical. I've
looked at somebody's listening, got like Kyrie Irving ranked like
the fourth best. Carl Towns, who's from New Jersey, will
be a free agent. Uh do we? Men? Did mention
Kawhi letter don't we? Yeah? And KD So not everyone

(01:20:19):
wants to be a title contender every single season. I
know that the goal to sports, golden sports is to
win at sports like I love the statistical data that
supports various players being great, but the ones that that
we You play a sport to win it, right, You
play cards to win that hand, you play whatever, play
video games to win it. But not every team is

(01:20:42):
in it to win a title. I'll explain next in
the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. You know, we started the show talking
about how the thing how you're there are things that

(01:21:06):
you've been lied to about your entire life, right, and
even sometimes when you know them to be false, So
you know them to be falsehoods, you still because it
has been beaten into you. It's really hard to get over.

(01:21:26):
I have. I'll give you an example. I have a friend,
I have some friends, I have a daughter who deals
with anxiety, and um, we got into discussion about about
marijuana and about how and I didn't even know this.
There's two different parts, two different active drugs in marijuana. Right,

(01:21:48):
There's one that's th HC, right, you guys familiar with
t HC. Right, And then there's another one which is
a non what was it called, Um, it's a non
and uh uh and not not hallucigenic uh in in marijuana.

(01:22:08):
And and that one right, there's two chemicals, two chemicals,
and that one has actually been found. It's called c
b D. It's a cannabien doyle or whatever it's called. Honestly, like, look,
I'm I would love to sit here and tell you
like I knew, but I didn't know. But cb D

(01:22:30):
has actually been shown to help decrease a lot of
the of the issues that kids have adults have with anxiety. Like, look,
when you have a child and they have severe anxiety,
they get medicated a really young age. But there are
people that will not even consider c b D even

(01:22:51):
if it's a non hallucigetic, because for their life it's
been poundered in them that weed is bad. Beer is fine. Right. Well,
in sports, one of the things that we're told is
that everybody's everybody's trying to win. Hey, we're just trying
to win championship. And we're told that players, though they

(01:23:13):
want to get paid, they also all want to win
a championship. Kevin Love today signed a contract extension with
the Cleveland Cavaliers. Now do I think Kevin Love is
a bad player. I do not. I think he's a
very good player. Uh. In many ways, he was slightly
overrated before he got to the Calves, and some of

(01:23:33):
that he was the best player on bad teams. Some
of it is that the league has changed and that
true power forwards are no longer in vogue. And some
of it is that, uh, that his skills in the
post have diminished so that even when he gets a
mismatch now and teams playing small, he can't take advantage

(01:23:53):
of that said, Kevin Love signs a four year extension
hundred and twenty million dollars, and anybody would say, good
for Kevin Love. That's five years he's remaining on his
the overall a hundred and forty five million dollars. But
you can't tell me for a second that Kevin Love
believes he's gonna compete for or win a championship in Cleveland,

(01:24:15):
nor the Keevan Cleveland Cavaliers making deals, making moves that's
gonna allow them to compete for or win a championship
in the near term future. Not every team, the lie
that you've been told your entire life is not every
team is trying to win championship, right. The Calves are
just trying to stabilize themselves. They got Colin Sexton, they

(01:24:37):
got Kevin Love. They're probably gonna tank at some point
mid season, get another draft pick, clear out cap space
with some of these guys that they have, and then
try and make another run in two or three or
four years. Let's bring in Brian Scalabrini, check him in
the Big Three out Friday in Toronto. Uh, They'll be
checking out all all the new places to stay for

(01:24:58):
Kauahi Leonard. That's eight pm Eastern time on Fox Sports One,
which obviously everybody feels good for Kevin Love getting paid, right,
who's gonna hate on a guy for getting a hundred
forty five or five years? But what do you think
it means for Kevin Love? Like he got his championship.
Now it's just collect checks. What do you want him
to do? I don't know, weight not sign trying to

(01:25:20):
determine his own future. All right, hold on, I didn't
say I didn't like I'm I'm I'm not saying I
would do it. I'm saying, is that a is that
a possible option? There? Well, I mean we we like
destroyed Kevin Durant for chasing a championship, and now we're
not I didn't I'm not looking. I'm not destroying a guy,

(01:25:41):
but I'm I'm stating it is what it is. Right.
It's simply like, hey, I can make a ton of
money here. I don't have to move. I can have
my own team. There's only thirty of them and I
got my own team. Like, all right, cool? I mean,
as long as we don't say I'm here to win
a championship, because that's not really a possibility, let alone
even a likelihood. Well, I mean, like, well, what teams
are to Winter Championships this year? You tell me, I

(01:26:02):
would say there's probably four or five in the East
that compete for the Eastern Conference title. There's one obviously
in the West, and then there's a couple of other
chasers in the West that have a shot. Right, I'm
not like, I don't I'm not taking it. Sounds like
you're taking a hot take here, and I'm not sure
I'm following if I have an opportunity like Kevin Love, Like,

(01:26:23):
why does he want to enter into free agency? He
can sign an extension off his deal, he can get
financial security forever. I don't understand why he wouldn't take
the deal. It to me, it's not even a question
of should he have should I think it's a good
deal for the Calves. He didn't. He it's like eight
million off of what he could have totally made. And
you're probably gonna put up unbelievable numbers this year because

(01:26:45):
Lebron is gone. How good is he? In truth? So, so,
you remember when Chris Bosh went to Miami and everyone
was kind of like just in boss left Left, and
right now like and now, let's but but Lebron on that.
Then they gave Chris Bosh million dollars. I think Chris
Bosh is a good player. Centers that can rebound or

(01:27:06):
power forwards that can rebound and shoot three, they're not
They're hard to come by, and so Kevin Love is
one of the best at that. Now does he have weaknesses, Yeah,
he's weaknesses against the Golden State Warriors, But I don't
think his weaknesses are as bad as what people think
when if you were to watch him against every team
in the NBA, and I think he'll have a better
year than he did last year. I don't think there's

(01:27:27):
any questions. Statistically he will. By the way, at the
end of his contract, okay, his career earnings will be
two hundred and sixty five point six million dollars. Yeah,
that's what's up. Good for him so much? That is
so much a ring. And so he has a ring.
He has two hundred sixty five you know what I mean,

(01:27:48):
Like he has the high I think I don't know
if he has or had. It's always interesting he had
to Hollywood girlfriends so he could get the guy's living
a charm like he's on Banana republic commercials. He's good,
he's on Banana Republican. I honestly didn't know that. Brian
Scalabrini joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. What do
you think about the Kauai in Toronto thing? Like, I mean,

(01:28:10):
in all honesty, it feels like an upgrade over to
mar de Rosen, but it's it's a severe gamble in
terms of long the long term thing. In the short term,
does it work? Biggest if of all time? If he's healthy,
if he's the quiet Leonard that we remember, then Toronto
is an elite team in the Eastern Conference. But if

(01:28:31):
he's not, then is the worst trade ever? Right, get
rid of a guy? Now you gotta blow everything up.
I'm not gonna go worst trade ever, but you know,
it's just the biggest IF I've ever seen because he
is arguably one of the greatest two way players to
ever play the game. When when he's right, and is
he right? Because he played in San Antonio and didn't

(01:28:51):
have to deal with the media because there they just
don't make you do things and they're gonna be okay
in Toronto. In Toronto, I don't know there's a lot
of big question mark, but if everything is perfect, Toronto
was a really good team. I can't say that they're
the best team in the East, but if they somehow
some way had home court advantage against the Celtics would

(01:29:11):
be really interesting to watch those two teams go out there.
There's a there's a lot of discussion about the Celtics
and some of which I think misses the mark. Brian
Scalabrini joined us in the Doug Gotlip Show. Check them
out Friday, eight pm Eastern tom on FS one. The
Big Three continues on They'll be Live in Toronto. Big
Three has been awesome this year. I want to get
to that in a second. Um. I feel like between
people forgetting how how versatile and how frankly good Gordon

(01:29:35):
Hayward is and people just assuming that Kyrie Irving wants
to leave, it's I think there's some sort of diminishing
of do they got a really good, really deep, really
diverse roster that I think, Look, would the Warriors be
the favorite shore But it's if they were to get
against the Warriors with a year or the year and

(01:29:57):
a half two years to play together, I know they
none of them really played a together because they didn't
have Hayward this year. Like, I think that's the second
best team in the NBA, and I don't think it's
really all that close. Am I crazy? No? I draw
on that too, and I'm might and I give him
like a puncher's chance of beating the Warriors, just because
there has to be like a residual effect of all
these times going to the finals, all the attention, all

(01:30:17):
the media being the Warriors, who, frankly, in my opinion,
are kind of locked in and understand how to beat
the Calvs. But going into a Celtics series, do they
know how to beat the Celtics? Now? Are they a
better team? Yeah? But the Celtics do have a chance
if they were to make it to the finals to
beat the Warriors. Just not. I think they have a
better chance in Cleveland did this year? Yeah? I would,

(01:30:38):
I would agree with I would agree with that. Um, okay,
let's let's get to the Lakers. What's your first split?
Your thoughts on the roster that they've now constructed. God man,
it looks like no pun intended, but maybe pun intended.
It looks like it's gonna be a train wreck. But
Brown is meeting with Hollywood executive and not meeting with

(01:30:59):
this coach. They're signing all the guys who like have
this function around him. I don't put Rondo in that
category because I know Rondo and I Thinque like he
could kind of make it work a little bit. But Stevenson,
Develle McGee, Michael Beasley, like, how are those guys, Like,
how do they fit in with Lebron? We've seen Lebron
play all these years. You want to do in the

(01:31:20):
with Lebron? You gotta make shots and make uh and
and play defense. Like those guys are like all guys
that need to ball in their hands. So I don't know,
Like this year, I don't know how the Lakers are
gonna do. I I it wouldn't shock me if all
the good teams out with It would not shock me
if they're not a playoff team. Now I will give
you that answer. We'll have this conversation again after I

(01:31:42):
watch them playing the preseason, But it wouldn't shock me
if they're not the guys I do like I do
like Kuzma, I'm not like really that high on Brandon Ingram.
Everyone talks about him being good, so he must be good.
But this Laker team is so interesting it's gonna be.
It should be. Remember when they did the association back
in the day where they follow the team around. This
should be the team they do the association with. That's

(01:32:04):
that's a that's a really really good called. I mean,
you could executive produce that. Think if nobody else wants
to ley Brian Scalabrini joined us, I I do. Look,
you've been in NBA locker rooms. I have not, okay,
but I do know enough NBA guys to think that.
Let me just this hypothesis and you tell me if
there's any sort of facts to it. Which is is
it different with lance Um? Is it different with bees?

(01:32:27):
Is a difference with some of these guys when they're
on one year deals, not huge money deals, to which look,
if they don't buy in and behave and get along,
they can move them or they can just cut them
because they're they're saving their calory salary space for the
next year. Like, it's different when you're not making a
bunch of money in terms of how much you can
trash a locker room. Correct, So I don't I'm not

(01:32:47):
a big believer in like locker roofs like if you
have bad chemistry doesn't mean you can't be good, Like
like Shaq Kobe didn't get along there were phenomenal. Right,
So I'm not a chemistry guy. I'm just looking at
it from a basketball standpoint, Like the pieces don't fit
in my opinion, with Lebron being there, Yeah, yeah, because
he likes shooters around him, right, like he likes he

(01:33:09):
likes to get the ball. What if I what if
they're working? Theory is, hey, you roll him more into
the post, you know, and you play off of him,
and you allot you want guys that are versatile ball
handlers and defenders, and that's what they're trying to put around.
Maybe maybe I don't think any of I don't think
any of those guys are school starters anyway, Like I
think they're starters are our ball who's gonna shoot better? Uh,

(01:33:32):
couldn't shoot any worse? Right, our KCP? Maybe Josh Harper, KCP,
Kuzma and and then probably what Javel McGhee or Zoobotch.
I guess that becomes their starting five and Lebron. Okay,
all right, um, all right, interesting. I still think my
opinion it has like it's a volatile team that could

(01:33:55):
go sideways really quickly. And like I'm telling you this weird.
This is weird, Like Lebron not meeting Luke Walland is
a weird thing. But he did, he met with him,
He met with him in in in there. There's the
reports came out last or last week whatever that he
texted with Luke the whole time that he met with
him in Vegas, that that was that was a little
bit overblown. You think, so I don't know, I mean,

(01:34:15):
I don't, I don't, I mean, I don't know. It
just seems weird that Magic was at Lebron's house. No
one else was there, a like, no Luke. I just
think it's weird. I just I've never heard like a
big free agency where it's not like a bunch of
people showing up. And maybe maybe not a bunch of people,
maybe Magic and Luke wall In the head coach of
the team. But you know, I'm not trying to start

(01:34:36):
controversy or anything. I'm really know. You listen to listen,
s Lebron James is here and it's just Magic meeting
hum at his house. Scal You bring up a great point.
I mean, there's a reason that there's the Hampton five, right,
because those other four dudes went and showed up along
with the brain trust from Golden State to get Kevin Durant.
Like what you're saying makes complete and total sense. The
only thing I can offer up is no one else

(01:34:58):
was able to make a pitch, So there was obvious
like he Lebron probably just wander here from Magic and
that's it because he felt like Magic was in charge.
Like you know, Polinkt didn't get the call, Jeanie bustn't
get a call. It was just it is weird. But
Lebron is kind of weird, right, so we we we
we have to kind of take that with a grain
of Uh, does Carmelo make the make Houston better or worse?

(01:35:23):
I mean, they're worse without Trevor a Resa, but they're
better with Carmelo then without Carmelo. But if you want
to swap those two, I'm taking Trevor reason all day.
Are they legitimate contenders anymore? Considering and let's let's assume
that Capella comes back. Yeah, um yeah, I guess so. Yeah,

(01:35:45):
you can't do what you did last year not be
a contender. They it wasn't Maybe he was lighting in
a bottle. I'll tell you. I'll tell you two guys did,
Jake Tucker and Trevor Ariza. I mean, they played their
ass off when they were down the rest of the guys,
I thought, like state status quo. It was like the
level that p J. Tucker and Trevor Riza went to

(01:36:06):
was from a role player looking at like other role play.
Those guys were insane, insane how hard they played. And
I think that has a lot to do with them
doing like the over seven in a row. They just
played too hard. They hit the wall um real quick
on the Big three three headed Monster. Are they that
much better than everybody else? No? No, no, no, no, no,

(01:36:29):
especially Richard lewis out now. But what's amazing. The most
amazing thing going on in the world right now is
Makmo busting guys who are twenty years younger than the
it is. It is ridiculous that this forty nine year
old man is out there busting all of us. I
don't know, how does he not have a deal with

(01:36:51):
Ensure or like some like something a RP or something
like that. This guy should be on every commercial right
now because he's out there dominating at easy it's what's
maybe remember he led the country and scoring as a freshman,
and now now was it like, you know, twenty nine
years later, thirty years later, here he is dominating, like

(01:37:12):
literally dominating the Big Three with his scoring. It's insane
what he's been able to do. It's like it's it's
like Lebron playing eight two last year. Yeah, it looks
like just the same thing. If you told me Lebron
was gonna play eight two and be like, no way,
if you told me a forty nine year old man
was going to dominate the Big three in his own
way like Gate, Robinson is also really good, just some

(01:37:32):
other guys that are good, but in his own way,
I'd say, no way, no way, a forty nine year
old man. I was at the tryout. I mean, he
didn't miss his shot, but I'm thinking, you're forty nine,
how are you doing this? Um? How else? Coatino Mobile?
Coatino Mobile seems like he's he's only forty two, but
because because of the gray, he looks even older and
and he's busting people up. But it was like black

(01:37:54):
out there, right, But you know what, you know what
it is like he plays all the time l A.
He plays in the league, and he's got that smooth
game and he's not a small guy like one thing.
It's like, you know, we always say, well, you know,
small guys when they age, they don't age well except
for mock food. But Catino Movie, he's really strong, uses

(01:38:15):
his body well, he still gets a shot off. But yeah,
a lot of these guys are really good. I'm like,
I'm shocked how good everybody is. You know. I think
in a three on three games would be fun to
see then play a group of NBA players if you
not the best, obviously not the best, but a group
of NBA player I think these guys would beat them. Yeah,
because they're so so physical and just grown grown ass

(01:38:36):
men and they make and they make shots. Great stuff.
Can't wait. See you this stuff Friday Night from Toronto.
Enjoy the Triple. Talk to you soon. Brian Scalabrini joining us,
concusing me of a hot take. I didn't think that
take was all that hot. I think the take was
all that hot. The newest member of the the New York Giants,
Connor Barrow, when our guy, also another former Hooper, played
a little hoop at Cincinnati, does a lot of good

(01:38:57):
works in the off season. Why the g men, We'll
ask him he joins us. Next. Car shopping can be
confusing with terms like dealer price, Liz price, an invoice price.

you're ready to buy a new or used car. Visit

(01:39:24):
Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. We're told Connor Borrowin
will join us momentarily here newest member of the New
York Giants, a new father, uh, kind of back on
the East Coast. He's a Midwest boy. So like I
can't wait to catch up with Connor and get his

(01:39:45):
thoughts on his personal journey, his professional journey as well.
Here's what I wanna do. I want to get to
Dan buy or find out what's going on in the
world of sports, and then then we'll catch up with Connor,
hopefully on the back end then when he got sounds
like a plan. Doug Todd Gurley has got an extension
with the RAM four year extension where it's sixty million dollars.
According to reports, is the running back will get forty

(01:40:05):
five million dollars guaranteed. Rams now contend their attention to
try and get Aaron Donald under contract. Who's gonna be
a holdout in training camp. As for Girley, his average
hillery a fifty million dollars per season, highest for any
running back in the NFL. More contract news in the NFL,
and speaking of holdouts, the Falcons have one in Julio Jones.
The NFL Network says the wide receiver won't report to

(01:40:27):
training camp on Thursday because he wants a new deal.
Jones still has three years left on a five year
extension that he signed in twenty fifteen that was worth
seventy one million dollars. Bengals owner Mike Brown, telling ESPN
that the owners across the NFL have been told to
stay out of the anthem debate, says the league in
the union are on discussions and they've been told to
stand down as those talks continue on a new policy.

(01:40:47):
Yankees placed catcher Gary Sanchez on the ten d d
L with a groin strain. Sanchez ran slow down the
baseline and last night's lost to the race, making the
final out and admitted he could have done a better job.
Run Now he's on the ten D D L Martin's
hold hold on real quick. I want to get to
invest your report. I apologize that you've seen the video.

(01:41:07):
I saw the video. I know that a groin and
you pull a groin, it hurts. But he wasn't limping
and when he needed to he did speed up and
run and it wasn't a change of direction where if
your groins hurting you usually hurts you. So I guess, look,
and I want to believe that that's the reason he
wasn't hustling, But I've seen the video and I just

(01:41:30):
don't believe it. Do you believe that's the reason he
wasn't hustling? No, I believe that he gave up on
the play. That's so what did they do? No? No,
what do you mean? So? What did they do? Or
what do they do? So do you think do you
think this is a mini suspension They just don't want
it to be a suspension. Do you think it's groin
really is bothering him? What do you think? I think

(01:41:52):
they're doing sled of hand. I think they're trying to
misdirect and to say that was the reason and not
make a bigger issue than what it really is. Okay,
Marlin's beat the Braves nine to three. Cavinier sent forward
Kevin Love to a four year extent worth twenty million dollars.
The extension will kick in after next season, where he
set to make twenty four million dollars. That is the

(01:42:15):
latest stug otlip show here on Fox Sports Radio. Great stuff,
Dan Buyer, Yeah, I mean, like, look, I get you're
protecting the player. I do feel like that even if
he was hurt. Even if he was hurt, Um, that
is suspension worthy. And you don't have to do a lot.

(01:42:35):
You don't have to do a lot. You just you
suspend him for a game. You know, you just lay
it out there. Hey man, this is not not we're
looking for. You're gonna be catcher, especially of the the
best franchise in the history of the sport. You got
a house out to that ball. And you know, if
you're hurt, go see a trainer. No, if you're injured,

(01:42:56):
go see a trainer. If you're hurt, go and make
a play. Bad. There's just no way to describe it
other than it's just a bad look, just a really
really bad look. So um, but the Yankees are right
here in the thick of a Pennant race and they're
trying to not lose. Guys that said, I I don't

(01:43:20):
like the Tenda deal. I'm I believe that he probably
did end up hurting himself. There is some validity to that,
and maybe that's why he got up kind of slowly
and genially. But you're a catcher and he's had struggles defensively.
Remember all offseason he was That was one of the
things that getting rid of Girardi. Girardi struggle with him
at catcher, and Girardi is a former catcher. That was

(01:43:41):
a big issue for that team last year in the
World Series. Was he was so bad, I mean in
the playoffs he was so bad defensively. Do you keep
him back there? Do you put Roman back there and
make him into a d H so kind of a
fascinating Look, you know, Buyer, and I don't know how
busy you are. You brought up the Julio Jones deal.

(01:44:02):
We talked about this going back a week ago or
two weeks ago. Here's the problem with the Julio Jones thing. Look,
the Julio Jones thing is basically a reaction to two
different deals, two different deals. One, everybody's reacting to Sammy
Watkins contract, which was ridiculous, sixteen million dollars a year

(01:44:23):
to a guy who is the fourth best wide receiver,
fourth best wide receiver for the l A Rams last year. Secondly,
it's Julio jo and saying, look at how little I make.
But it's it. I just I'm just tired of being
lied to by these players, Like, oh, he's taking a

(01:44:43):
pay cut, Like dude, he got his when he negotiated
this contract. It was a huge up front the contract
where you got guaranteed money up front, knowing full well
that this was gonna happen. This is the most disingenuous
crap that NFL players do all the time, right, I mean,

(01:45:04):
look at the money he he he made early on
twenty in the early stage of this contract. He made
twenty two million dollars his first year. Like nobody ever
says like hey, In two thousand fifteen, at twenty six
years old, he made twenty two million dollars, which was
far and away the highest paid wide receiver in the
history of the National Football League and still would be.

(01:45:28):
Then he made thirteen and eleven and now it's ten
and a half this year, and then it would go
back up if he stays under this deal to twelve
and a half next year at eleven point five in
his final year. That was the deal he signed, totally
front loaded, totally front loaded. And yeah, the base salary

(01:45:48):
is only ten point five, but he also makes two
point two point five in in a signing bonus this year.
So the truth is his first year he made twenty
two ill. His second year he made thirteen a half mill.
His third year he made thirteen excuse me, fourteen mill.
So all they're doing is they're like, hey, look at

(01:46:09):
his base salary. Yeah, but he made a whole bunch
of bonuses and he made a bunch in the front end.
That was the deal he signed. If you don't like,
don't sign the deal that easy three years left. I'm
supposed to have sympathy for him. None, none, I'm not

(01:46:30):
wrong here, am I not at all? Not at all?
And considering the Falcons are a team where I know
he had to catch in Super Bowl fifty one, but
it was also a Super Bowl where he had four
catches the entire game. You saw what happened on fourth
pound last year, He's not as much of a red
zone threat, So even duck the value of it. How
many teams who are wanting to get back to the
super Bowl or to continue to climb or take that

(01:46:52):
bounce back step, or like we need to pay a
wide receiver more very rarely happens in the National Football
League that you're taking that that guy who you want
to take over your humping that guy be a wide
receiver that you're paying. And that's I just yeah, I
just I just don't like that when when people, you know,
agents and guys that leak information be like, oh, look
at his base salary, Like, yeah, how come we didn't

(01:47:14):
talk about how much money he made in the early
years of the contract or the guaranteed money. We're like,
we don't talk about any any of that deal. It
was a five year, seventy one million dollar contract. And
is he gonna make sixteen million dollars per year in
the last couple of years? Like no, but do the
do the math on what five years and seventy one
million dollars is? Uh? Was that? That's just and and

(01:47:39):
remember that was signed in two thousand fifteen, Like everyone's
contract they signed in two thousand fifteen in a professional
sports league, is going to be outshone by a contract
in two thousand and sixteen, even if it's an inferior player.
And oh yeah, by the way you make, you make
probably the point that no one is really willing to
make is Julio Jones twenty nine. There's a strong likelihood
that if his best years aren't behind him yet, there's

(01:48:02):
soon to be behind him. That's just the reality of
the sport. And nobody, nobody wants to own up to
the reality of the sport. That's the reality to him. Away, Yes, right, music,
you had your you wanted to share. Well, I just
think it's interesting because you see so many of these
different players are in so many different positions of like
what they want to do, where like Julio Jones gets

(01:48:25):
this long term contracts, but then, like you said, it
ends up not being exactly what he wants. So he
has the long term deal, but it's not the long
term deal that he wants. And then you have Levan
bell Is playing this franchise tag game because he can't
get the long term deal that he wants. And then
you have Todd Gurley signs this extension which makes him
have like a six year contract because it's adding on

(01:48:45):
a four year to his rookie deal. And then you
had the report that we talked about yesterday with Ian Rappaport,
and say Kwan Barkley gets his rookie deal, which is
fully guaranteed, and it's like all of these different players
all want different things and it's almost like there's no cohesion.
And then they're all just like, but we all want
fully guaranteed contracts, and so like, if you're the nfl

(01:49:07):
p A, by the way, by the way, Antonio Brown, okay,
and I want to get to this. Antonio Brown, Remember
signed a four year, sixteen million dollar contract last season.
Antonio Brown probably the best wide receiving to Lake right,
nineteen million dollars guaranteed a signed, Like that's commensurate with
the Julio Jones deal that was five seventy one signed
three years before that, two years before that. Anyway, go ahead, No,

(01:49:27):
I just mean like they all have different things that
they're asking or requiring, but they all try to make
it sound like, oh, we're all on the same page.
And so like that's why the nfl p A is
always putting this position. We're like, oh, they can't ever
get leverage over the NFL. Well, because you have everyone's
on different pages asking for different things, how are we
supposed to go to the negotiating table and say we

(01:49:48):
want these seventeen things and will actually never give anything
back to you? Yeah, I think I think that you
can make it a really good point. Um, this is
no different than where I work here, right, you know
it's been leaked. The Cowherd got a new deal. I
know Clay Travis. Congratulations to him, he got a new deal. Right,
So imagine if I said like, hey, we're up whatever percentage,

(01:50:12):
and I'm you know, I heard Clay just got a
new deal, and and Colin got a new deal, so
I wanted to deal like yeah, with their contracts were up,
so it doesn't matter. I have two years left to
my contract. I want a new contract in in what workplace?
Is that acceptable? In what work place? And and you

(01:50:33):
can say to me like, hey, but you know you
can cut those guys. I can be fired. Depending upon
the world wording of my contract. I can be fired
then come in and go like hey, you're not really
we don't want you anymore. And we would sit there
and go like, well, you owe me all this left
to my contract and then go well, we'll pay you
this amount and we'll let you go start working somewhere.

(01:50:55):
That's the way, Like, this is a job. You sign
a contract. Somebody else gets a big your contract or
different because they were in a different stage of their
contract whatever. You can't go back to your boss and
go like, dude, I know I got three years left,
but you know, and you might and they all Julio
Jones deal of like, well if you go back and

(01:51:15):
redo his deal, now, anybody who's got three years left
in their deal is gonna come knocking at your door. Hey,
you just gave Julio new deal with three years left?
What about me? So you could ask for it. I
do think that some of it is NFL players, Um,
guys like Julio Jones. They don't care if they missed
camp because they don't want to get hurt, you know.
I think Ryan's point of what he's talking about as well,

(01:51:37):
with different players at different positions, all wanting different things.
When I heard the Girly deal today, Doug and a
lot of people said, boy, Levian Bell is gonna be
a happy man. I thought the exact opposite. I thought,
Todd Gurley just set the ceiling because of age of
history of for a guy that wants seventeen million dollars
per year and Todd Gurley is getting fifteen. Like that's

(01:51:59):
how I look at it, Like we thought there was
this order like this works with quarterbacks, Aaron Rodgers will
get his, but all the other positions are different. With
Gurley getting his deal before Levian Bell, I actually think
that sets the ceiling for levi on Bell because I
don't think that there's any way that you can pay
him more than you just paid Todd Gurley, who's a
couple of years younger and doesn't have as much tread

(01:52:20):
on the tires as Leviyan though, right, let me reach
reading some Eric from Boise tweets in says love how
teams are free to cut players in the middle of
their deals all the time, but if player takes control,
you can't back them. The reality is NBA is influencing
in the NFL contracts Now, No they're not. It's a
different sport. It's a different contract, just like in Major
League Baseball is a different sport of different contract. It's

(01:52:41):
completely different. Stop being fooled because you want this is
what we do. This is what is the societal problem? Okay,
we always side with the player as opposed to the owner.
We always side to the players opposed to the n
c A. We always side with the players opposed the official.

(01:53:01):
Like we are so anti whoever is in charge. You
can't be like somebody has to be in charge. They're
not the same. NBA contracts NFL contracts are not and
should not be the same. Do you know why? Because
in the NFL, one hit and it's done, and even
more than that, maybe even not the one hit, the
Ryan Shay's here, Guys fade out. They fizzle out very

(01:53:23):
very quickly, whereas the NBA there's a lot more longevity.
It just is. And oh yeah, by the way, there's
more dates, you're playing more dates. There's fewer players, there's
bigger contracts. They're not the same. They wanted to be
the same, but they're not. Every NFL players say, most
of them, not all of them. Many of them are
are are frustrated that they can't play in the NBA

(01:53:43):
because they know it's a better gig. But more than anything,
you just you've been lied to this whole idea of
well you can't you can just cut a player let's
say the Atlanta Falcons. Let's just say that they want
to cut who O Jones. Okay, Julio Jones is twenty
nine years old. If they want to cut him, they

(01:54:06):
will owe him his signing bonus from the original contract,
which is five million dollars in cash at the time
and whenever other guaranteed money he is owed from the deal,
so probably neighborhood of five to ten million dollars. And
then you know what else happens if he was to
get cut, gets a new contract and in that contract,

(01:54:28):
you know what, you'd have guaranteed money in the signing bonus,
probably in the neighborhood of what his contract is now.
And then on top of that, he would have the
five to ten million dollars that he's owed from the
Atlanta Falcons that they would have to pay him by
cutting him. You've been lied to, You've been had. It's okay,

(01:54:50):
don't worry about it. The woe is me NFL player,
oh man, we don't have guess they have guaranteed contracts,
they absolutely have them. They have to balance out they
want and guarantees versus what they want in years and
and in totals. Let's it's how it works. That's that's
the sport. That's absolutely sport. A young NFL star missing

Sports Radio, m M all right, I'm gonna answer to

(01:55:38):
Eric's email because Eric's tweet, just because it is something
that a lot of people put out there. The NFL
generates twice the revenue and plays fewer games and assumes
more risk. How is it the players can't make the
same or more money in the NFL? Not following your logic.
There are more players, there are fifty three guys. Okay,
they split the revenue. All the revenue is split up

(01:55:59):
and thrown into the recap, and I think it's close
to a fifty fifty split there, just like it is
in the NBA. So the idea that, well, they're making
more money. Why are the players making more money? The
players are making more money for a fewer games. There
are games per game, they make a ton more money.
But there's fifty three players as opposed to fifteen an

(01:56:20):
NBA roster. Like oh, and the the risk that's assumed
first of all, like remember NFL teams have to put
out layout more money, cost more way to buy the
like everything costs more and you make more. But the
revenue that's brought in it is accurate. They bring in

(01:56:41):
more revenue for fewer games. That revenue is that just
like the basketball only revenue, the football revenue. It's all
split up. That's based upon what's collectively agreed upon. But
when there's fifty three guys, it gets split up differently
than fifteen guys. That's that's math. Um. We're not gonna

(01:57:01):
go to the press. I believe we're gonna go. Connor
Barrowing gonna join us. We're gonna do Conna tomorrow. What's
what's the story? What's the story? All right? Connor barrowin
joins us in the Doug Gottlieb Show. A newest New
York Giant, a new parent as well more exciting to
uh sign a new contract or to have the baby. Man,

(01:57:22):
the baby for sure, the baby for sure? Were you
in the delivery room? But but but I'm excited. I'm
excited to be back in the NFC. Somebody, I'm very
excited to be a giant. Um. But yeah, nothing compared
to the baby. My first baby was was amazing. Yeah,
I know, I've seen the pictures on I G taking
a shower, taking it to the Jersey shore. Uh, first tattoo.
I thought that was brave. You know, you know, a

(01:57:43):
couple months old through the first tattoo on the on
the kid, that's a really brave thing. Um. You know,
I thought the barbed wire was a little much too,
to be completely honest, but you know, I'm gonna grow
up and have probably has some guns. Like you were
you in the delivery room, I was, I was. I
was in there, and you know, before it happened, I
thought me and the nurse and the doctor would like

(01:58:05):
have a little team huddle and go over like what
my role was. None of that happened. I was just
sitting on my couch. Ten seconds later, the nurse was
like grabber leg and I was just kind of replicating
what the nurse was doing, and I was all in
and saw everything. It was truly the most amazing, incredible

(01:58:25):
thing I've ever seen. Congratulations to you. And your lovely bride.
Now moving back from from West Coast to East Coast.
Why the Giants, Well, it's a great situation for me.
I mean there are there are three four. Um. I
played with Bill McGovern, the linebacker coach um in Philadelphia
for three years. I had twenty five sacks with him

(01:58:46):
in those three years, So I feel really good about
playing with him. And you know, like I said, I'm
back in the NFC East, which I played with Philly
for four years. I think it's the most exciting division
in football. And I'm close to home. I live in Philly.
My brother lives in New York with his two kids.
I'm an East Coast guy. It's good to be back
on East Coast. But now you're you're losing. You're living losing, Wade.
What about relationships wise on that Giant staff? Are there

(01:59:08):
enough guys there that know you know you own up? Well?
I don't. What do you mean, like players that I
played with, like coaches like like coaches like it was
cool for you to come back and play for Wade
because he like he knew you, right, I mean, like
you has a great relationship back from Houston days, didn't you?
I mean I just I want I was yeah, yeah,
but you know it's still you know, it's it's still

(01:59:28):
always about playing ball. And I'm gonna show up tomorrow
and we're gonna start playing balling. All those coaches, Um,
they don't know me, they're getting they're gonna get to
know me quick and know what I'm good at and
what I can do and how I can help the team.
And I'm gonna be, you know, the same guy been
the last ten years. Yeah. No, it's it's pretty amazing
and like only one way to go up from last
year when everything went bad. I know it's it's it's

(01:59:50):
way too early yet, but what are your thoughts on
how to kind of especially the defense in that locker room.
The dudes were fighting on Twitter, dudes were fighting in
the media. Is there anything had been said in and
say hey, this year, guys, we're gonna we're gonna go
hush hush and just all get along and play football. Yeah,
I don't know. I mean, I'm I'm sure it's a
whole new year. It's a new head coach obviously wasn't

(02:00:11):
part of what happened last year. But um, you know,
I haven't even been to yet. I get there tomorrow, UM,
so we'll see what happens. But I'm excited. I know
they got a talented group on defense. UM. But like
every year, UM, you gotta come together. You gotta play
for each other every single week. You gotta get better,
you gotta stay healthy, all that kind of stuff. So
hopefully we have a good camper and get get the
seat and started off right. I also saw a part

(02:00:32):
of your workouts in the offseason, a lot of hoop
any true to the rumor you're gonna play in the
Big Three after you retire from the NFL. No, I said, though,
But I did play so much basketball, and I really
do feel great. You know, I had the off season
off sort of speak because I didn't it didn't find anywhere,
and it was great. I was with my family, but
I got back to playing basketball and it's really was

(02:00:53):
my my core training. And uh, you know, bastball gives
you that bounce, gives you that shake, especially if there's
a pass road from excited. All right, Ay Connor, congrats
in the baby, Congrats the new deal. Let's talk because
the season gets on the way. Thanks for joining us. Yep.
