Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, this is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Heres in
the Bonus with Doug Gottlieb.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
What Up Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
In the Bonus Fox Sports Radio, iHeartRadio, APT.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Welcome to the show. Do But oh so.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
I thought this was this was this was interesting right
that the that Aj Brown continues to be the focal
point of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
And we'll talk about this.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
A little bit later on in the in the pod,
but it's always interesting to me how I don't have
sympathy for guys that are bad teammates, but sometimes you
pay special attention to those guys. You're like, you know,
(01:04):
he's got a point, right, He's he's he's kind of
got a point. I think about this with politics all
the time. There are people that I don't like in politics,
and then they make a point. You're like, you know,
I don't like that guy or his political lightnings, but
he's kind of got a point, right right. And my
point about Aj Brown is I went to the Eagles
(01:27):
game against the Green Bay Packers, and legitimately I had
and when you're during the game, you don't really and
Lambo's got all the different they have two gigantic jumbotrons.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
They have stats, they have stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
But I mean this in all honesty, I had no
idea if he was playing or not playing, because he
was not a part of the game in terms of
any sort of statistical like did he catch a pass?
I couldn't have told you. I had to go back
after the game and go, oh, he caught two balls
for thirteen yards.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
And my general.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Reaction to the wide receiver is the one that will
play for you a little bit later on in the
pod where Dan Patrick's like, dude, you're making thirty million dollars,
you're winning games, stfu and go play. I get it,
but it is weird to have what I think anybody
would have said was a gigantic Monday night football game.
And I don't know if he was used as decoy.
(02:34):
I just know that he wasn't really a huge part
of the game plan. And it wasn't like the Packers
were openly doubling him and leaving other guys open.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
It was literally a product of.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
He's just one of the guys, which is weird because
if he's just one of the guys, why is he
paid so much? Why is it such a big deal?
I don't think he is just one of the guys.
This is my way of saying, Yeah, I think A J.
Brown he handles it poorly. I think he's obnoxious. I
think he's annoying. I think eventually he'll get run out
(03:07):
of Philadelphia, much like he was running out of Tennessee.
But I also kind of see his point. Maybe it
makes me feel like Chris Rock. Remember, like, I ain't
saying I would have killed it by an a stand, right,
Remember when he said that, Like, I'm not saying I
would have gone to the media. I would not have
reacted the way he wrecked. But if you watch the
Eagles play, you go to an Eagles game and you're like, wait,
(03:30):
they never seemingly never find a way to get him
the ball. And what was it the Dolphins that they
lost to where they force fed him the ball? They
tried to get him the ball earlier this year, right,
and that was kind of a disaster. Maybe it's the
Broncos game. Broncos game right that looked bad where they're
like force feeding the ball. There's a balance between forcing
(03:52):
the ball there like Dante Culpepper used to do to
Randy Moss and make him a big part of the
game plan, and it does feel like the Eagles have
no real use for him other than to be a
cog in what they do offensively. And that defies a
lot of logic to me, because, again, by NFL's accounts,
(04:16):
he's really, really talented.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
He's a tremendous wide receiver.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Why don't she get him the damn ball. This is
not my Maya Kopa saying I was wrong. AJ Brown
should shut up and play whatever. But having watched the
Eagles play in person, and I've watched them play on
TV a bunch, I can tell you that he does
kind of have a point that they don't actually use him,
and he's kind of good at what he does.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Let's Get Them with the Fox Says and now.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Every of this time in the Bonus Podcast to play
for your portion of previous show Fox Sports Radio. Fox
Sports here's Dan Patrick talking about the Eagles teen pervent
a wide receiver AJ Brown.
Speaker 4 (05:04):
By the way, this Eagle situation, I just don't get
it with Aj Brown don't. I don't know why he's upset,
Like you're winning. You can get numbers, you can go
get numbers, Go play, go play with Cleveland. They'll throw
you the ball fifteen times. Do you want that? Or
(05:25):
do you want to play in a structured offense that
maybe you're not going to get as many targets, but
you're going to win. And last I looked, isn't he
getting paid like thirty million dollars? This isn't about a paycheck.
It's it feels like being selfish and in this you know,
in a sport like football, you can't have it. I
(05:48):
get it. Wide receivers have been this way for the
last fifty years, but that doesn't mean we have to
tolerate it. And do I think he'll be on the
team next year? Probably not. Can they win what they
have won without him last year?
Speaker 3 (06:01):
No?
Speaker 4 (06:02):
Can they win without him moving forward? Well we'll probably
find out. But I just I don't understand.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Yeah, it's it's a really interesting it's actually an interesting
situation when you go to an Eagles game. And I
say this as a bit of a humble brag because
they did go to Monday night football, so I understand
actually a little bit more just because like they don't
look for him at all. There is there is no
(06:32):
sense of, hey, we got to get the ball. He's
one of our best players, Like say, Kwon Barkley is
not having a great year. And I understand that DeVante
Smith made the gigantic touchdown reception, but it doesn't feel
in any way like they're using such a good weapon. Now,
(06:53):
maybe it's because their quarterbacks not good enough to get
in the ball. I'm not really sure. I don't think
I think their offensivene is pretty good good, so I
don't think it's that they can't protect the quarterback to
get the ball to one their wide receivers. But as
much as I completely agree with Dan, this is what
wide receiver has been doing forever and you don't have
to accept it. And they did win a Super Bowl,
he is getting paid a lot of money. I will
(07:14):
tell you when you go to an Eagles game, it
is it was conspicuously absent the amount of energy put
towards getting the football to aj Brown, who I think,
by anybody's estimation, he is one of their elite players
and one of the elite wide receivers in the league.
(07:35):
Here's Rob Parker talking about Aaron Glenn being combative with
the Jets reporters.
Speaker 5 (07:39):
Total ridiculousness.
Speaker 6 (07:40):
Seriously, he doesn't deserve to be a head coach.
Speaker 5 (07:43):
He doesn't get it.
Speaker 6 (07:44):
I'm dead serious.
Speaker 5 (07:44):
I know you are.
Speaker 6 (07:45):
I'm dead serious. Can I The rich he's talking about
is Rich samean he who's covered the Jets for thirty
five forty Like, seriously, I'm known rich to mean, he
breaks stories, he writes for ESPN. He's been covering the
Jets for almost four decades. He's he's highly regarded and
plugged into the organization. Okay, he's been there that long.
(08:08):
So this whole notion that he's mad with that, go
go talk get Rich and find out what's going on. Dude,
that's inside your house. He has sources, he's been around.
Wait long, you've been there for forty minutes and he's
been there for forty years. Come on, man, answer the
damn questions. Who's your starting quarterback? And what are your injuries?
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Really?
Speaker 6 (08:31):
Yeah, it reminds me of like you're not, Like he's
not mature enough to be a head coach, like a
big baby. I'm dead shit if I'm an owner watching
that this is the guy I want to represent the organization.
Answer the damn questions they're asking you. The press is
there to bring up rich Sarmini.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Are you serious? Uh?
Speaker 3 (08:54):
Look, I I do think that he's handling it really poorly.
I'm talking about Aaron Glenn handling it very poorly, and
I don't think anybody would argue otherwise. I think he's
handling it poorly. No one would argue otherwise, but I
But again, this is one of those deals where it's
not about rich Semane. And if anything, if his desire
(09:15):
is to undercut the credibility of rich Semani, he's gonna
have the opposite of the intended effect.
Speaker 2 (09:20):
Right. He's telling us.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
That rich Sarmani knows what's going on in the organization
because in the absence of leadership at what is it
from American President, people listen to whoever's yelling the loudest, right,
and in this case, it's the media yelling the loudest
because they don't understand why is he Why will he
just not tell us what's really going on? What is
(09:44):
the point here? I'm not exactly sure. I don't want
to make it about rich Semenie. I just make it
about a coach who is If you can't deal with
the media in New York, you can't work in New York. Right,
it's I tell this story all the time about the
Cubs and Moist's Salou. Right, my buddy boog Shambi he
(10:05):
had he got together with Moist's Saloo after he left
the Marlins and went to the Cubs first season. He
was like a lot of day games. Like, yeah, if
you can't do a lot of day games, you can't.
You don't like day games, probably shouldn't play for the Cubs.
Nobody plays more day games. So I'm not really sure
exactly what Aaron Gleden thought he was getting into, but
(10:25):
I'm stunned that he doesn't realize what he's actually getting into.
Hold on, here's Colin Cowhert talking about the Lakers defense.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Guys that Luca guarded.
Speaker 7 (10:40):
Last night, Thunder players went eight for ten from the floor.
Ruey Austen reeves much better on offense than defense. DeAndre
Ayton allergic to defense. Gabe Vincent when he plays, gives
you effort, but he's small, who can he guard? So
the only open lane in all of LA is usually
at Laker games. The reality is, if you go look
(11:01):
at the last five NBA champions, only Denver was considered
sort of average defensively. But the truth is they weren't
Aaron Gordon elite defensively, elite athlete length, KCP, Bruce Brown.
Speaker 4 (11:13):
They were eighth in defense.
Speaker 7 (11:15):
May not have been as good as the Celtics or
OKAC last year, but they were a very very good
defensive team. OKC is missing two starters last night. What
does it matter?
Speaker 5 (11:25):
I SGA can get.
Speaker 7 (11:26):
The thirty with his eyes closed. They can score in
the paint. They had almost fifty points in the paint.
Why because DeAndre doesn't like defense. So this is not
a criticism, it is a reality. It is a lineup,
a Laker lineup that is heavily offensive leaning, massive duplication,
Austin Reeves. When Lebron gets back Luca, they all need
(11:47):
the ball in their hands.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Yep.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
They get an awesome offensive team, they have a terrible
defensive team. And I think anybody who pays attention to
the NBA knows that won't win big. That's what the
Fox says say.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Let's find out who what's annoying Jason Stewart.
Speaker 1 (12:18):
And now it's your annoying, Hey, Doug.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
The story of the week has been the firing of
Nico Harrison and the reasons why it happened, who was
involved in the decision, and the reaction of those around
the decision. WUCA was asked about it last night. Jason
Kidd was asked about it yesterday.
Speaker 8 (12:43):
We can only hope that we don't have to go
through that again because it was a little disrespectful because
the guys are playing hard and they're trying to win,
and so what that chant during one more shooting free
throws is very respectful, but understanding that they got their
(13:04):
point across the fans, but we have to move forward.
I understanding the healing process for the fans, but these
guys are playing hard. Ever since the trade. These guys
have given everything.
Speaker 5 (13:18):
So over the last three days, I've just watched the
way this has been covered and heard the opinions and whatnot.
I think the original wave of reaction was bullshit. Why
would you fire him?
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Now?
Speaker 5 (13:32):
Nico Harrison was just following orders. This is bull crap
and everything else. But the more I think about it,
the more you listen to Jason Kidd right there, this
was becoming a distraction for players at home games. The
franchise listened to the fans, And I know that's kind
of been used as a pejorative this week, like you
(13:53):
fire a guy because fans complained. It's like, yeah, yeah,
if you're showing up to games and your players are
uncomfort or you're not getting a home court advantage because
of this massive distraction that the ownership and GM caused,
then I guess you have to get rid of that
that part that might have caused all this distraction and
(14:14):
led to this record or whatever their their problems are.
It's like to me, it's I guess that's annoying that
like that the actual fans deciding or leading to a
decision has been used as a pejorative. But don't shouldn't
all businesses listen to their consumers.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
That's a really hard call. It's a it's actually a
massive topic that's worthy of discussion.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Let's have it here. We had some on the radio show.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
Yeah, but are those same fans, where would those same
fans be three years down the road if Luca continued
to not get in shape and he was getting hurt
and he was making three.
Speaker 2 (14:57):
Hundred million, That's that's the question.
Speaker 3 (15:00):
It's almost like you're saving them from saving uh, saving
them from themselves. You know that what they like now
is Luca, But will they like that in in a
couple of years. I don't know again that that that's
my my whole thought with it. It's like, I don't
really care. I don't think you concern yourself with your
fans because at the end of the day, fans only
(15:22):
care about winning.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
And that's my issue with it.
Speaker 5 (15:28):
Okay, yeah, we talked about it on then Wrong. No, No,
I mean it just sounds weird that you're saying it.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
Does It does sound right.
Speaker 3 (15:37):
It's like the customer is always right, and the customer
clearly didn't want the trade. But but there's the contradiction
of it, which is, if you listen to the customer, right,
what is that? What's the old If you listen to
the customer, you're gonna if you listen to fans, you're
gonna be one soon enough?
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Is that? What?
Speaker 8 (15:54):
What?
Speaker 3 (15:55):
Who was it? Jerry Sloan? Uh, famously said right, if
you listen to the fans, you'll be one. Soon, you'll
be sitting.
Speaker 2 (16:01):
Next to them. So yeah, I think it's a hard one.
I think you are right.
Speaker 3 (16:05):
Customer is technically always right in business, in sports, we
haven't done that because fans they don't know what they
don't know.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
That's that's the other part to it.
Speaker 5 (16:14):
Yeah, no, I think it's That's why this story I
think has had legs. It's an interesting one. We haven't
really seen many examples of this, but anyways, So the
thing that annoys me about this next thing is bone
Knicks hasn't played well of late, and I guess he's
been the subject of criticism on social media, and bon
(16:35):
Nicks had this to say about listening to social media.
Speaker 9 (16:38):
We make this entertainment business a lot bigger than what
it is, and we forget that. You know, everybody's just
out here having a good time, having fun, doing the
best they can. But for me, it's it's quite simple.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
Really.
Speaker 9 (16:50):
I dot all my social media. I don't even have it,
so unless somebody says it to my face, I don't
really hear it. And nobody's ever bold enough to say
it to your face. So really, I don't. I don't
get on social media.
Speaker 5 (17:03):
Now that I think that sounds right. I think it
sounds like something maybe a leader would say, but I
would even I would even say this. I think it
would even be more mature to admit that you hear
the criticism and you find the constructiveness in it. In
other words, I'm not talking about your trolls on Twitter
and Instagram calling you an asshole or whatever. I'm talking
(17:24):
about like voices like Kurt Warner or whoever that are
actually analyzing your play and pointing out things you're doing wrong.
There's constructiveness to take from those. So I think as
much as it sounds like it's a cool thing to
say I just ignore social media, which I don't think
anybody believes, you could also be like, yeah, you know what,
(17:44):
I hear the constructiveness in this criticism and I'm working
to fix it every day.
Speaker 3 (17:51):
Yeah again, I actually agree with you in the messaging.
I think that's the that's the end now the if, right,
it's the the and not the if. You know you
don't say I don't listen to Christy whatever. What you
say is what people don't know is I love feedback
(18:12):
from people who are in the industry, my coaches, anybody
who's played quarterback those ones. Yeah, I listened to you know,
I think that's what he's saying. But you're right the
delineation between it where the I'm gonna be a uh,
it comes across, and I think the way it lands
with you tell me if I'm wrong Jason, which is
(18:32):
he's gonna be an Ostrich to just stick.
Speaker 2 (18:34):
His head in the sand.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Meanwhile, if you have your head up and you just
don't listen to the idiots, there's actually some good stuff
out there.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
Correct. So earlier in the week Tuesday, we brought up
Bob Iger's appearance on The Manning Cast. The Manning Cast,
it looks like to me and you and I know
the business. I think Disney went to the Mannings and said,
we're going to give you Eiger. You need to put
Iger on, but you can't ask him about this big controversy.
(19:06):
And Disney, we pay you a lot of money and
you're just going to do it. And they followed orders.
But the there was criticism afterwards towards Eiger, towards the
Mannings for Iger like a missed opportunity, Like we're not
saying Eiger needs to go into details about the negotiation
(19:26):
and put all the blame on on Google. But he
could have extended some compassion towards the people that are
missing out on his product, and and it was a
failed opportunity. So yesterday to three days after the fact,
after getting the shit storm all week from critics, he
actually said that that I you know that I do
(19:48):
care about the people that are consuming our product. I
just think it's three days too late. And he kind
of just gave into criticism as opposed to offering it up.
Speaker 3 (19:58):
Yep, totally agree with you. You know, you can't have
compassion after the fact. It just doesn't work. Nobody but
nobody believes it.
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Right.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
That's that's your greater point is like compassion three days
later is not compassion that somebody told you you landed
without compassion. So now you're trying to clean it up.
Speaker 5 (20:18):
So Iger, the bone Knicks comments and the Nico Harrison
firing by the fans.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
I'm gonna go with.
Speaker 3 (20:32):
I'm gonna go with the Bob Eiger thing just because
it's so fake, so forth, so obvious, and and and
you know those positions when you're running a fortune five
five hundred company, there in many ways, you know there
are in many ways they're figurehead positions. And the thing
(20:52):
about it is you can be far more compassionate on
on TV than you are in person, Like you don't
actually have to be compassionate. His lack of compassion on
any level is kind of alarming, you know, and for
that that's annoying.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
Why are we doing this?
Speaker 4 (21:13):
I do.
Speaker 5 (21:17):
Because we can, all right, So we have a new
person in this, uh, Doug Christie, And almost no listeners
are gonna care about this, but it matters to me.
I saw Doug Christie play college ball at Pepperdine against
my cal State Flortes and Titans, So you got that.
Doug Christie is pissed off at the way that his kings,
(21:39):
he's the head coach of the Sacramona Kings, are representing
the king's jersey.
Speaker 2 (21:44):
Put on a jersey, represent it properly.
Speaker 5 (21:47):
These people need to come into the turnstiles and they
need to be proud when they leave.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Here about the product that they see.
Speaker 4 (21:53):
Now fucking embarrassed.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
So good, so good.
Speaker 3 (22:00):
I think he went on to say, I could do
better than I could play hard and I'm fifty five
years old. Doug Christy has looked the exact same since
he's thirty now. Some of it is he keeps himself
in great shait, some of it is he went bald early.
But whatever it is, it's amazing. Keep doing what you're doing.
Why can play for you? Because we can't. That's it
for the Inner Motives podcast. Check at the radio show
every day three to five. E's from Too Pacific, Fox
(22:21):
Sports Radio, iHeartRadio app I'm Doug Gotleig
