(00:28):
Minnesota at the Keeper's Heart Distillery. And man we are
We're gonna do some whiskey tasting after the show and
after my after my team's performance last night and kind
a really really tragic injury. We're gonna need it. We're
gonna need it. Welcome in Hope. You're doing great. Think
you enjoyed the show, And if you haven't done it yet,
(00:51):
download our podcast which follows this show as well. Just
type in Doug Gottlieb Show. Wherever you get this ever
yet podcast you can get one. Last night was Thursday
Night foot ball and once again the Patriots look like
the Patriots. What's the difference. I'll tell you in a second.
The Patriots won eight straight games. They're nine to two.
They currently hold the best record in the NFL. How
(01:11):
did this happen? How does this happen? I have a
belief system, and how it happened? I remember, like again,
they're not playing a great schedule. You know. The wins
are over the Dolphins, the Panthers, the Bills win is
a big one, the Saints, the Titans, the Browns, the Falcons,
the Buccaneers, and the Jets. Okay, Buccaneers and Bill's only
(01:36):
two playoff teams likely out of that group. Bill's definitely
a playoff team. Buccaneers maybe, but probably. Hey, the rest
is you're playing a last place schedule or close to
last place schedule. Goes close to the last place team.
But I think there's a couple of different parts to
it which I can relate to as a coach when
we're dealing with the Portalay, Mike Brabele rebuilt his entire defense.
(01:58):
Eight starters were free agents last year. So what does
that mean? Okay, so he used his time. First, he
was a coach, so he knew his guys, he knew
who he wanted to bring in, and when he came in,
he brought his guys for his system. And it was
plug and play. And it took him a little bit
early in the season when they lost two out of three,
but they slowly kind of figured it out. And then
(02:20):
it's all different. When you have a quarterback, quarterback, point guard,
doesn't matter. You got to go one. He had a
year of seasoning, a year to figure it out, surround
him with a good team, and all of a sudden,
now the Patriots are back. Here's Mike Brabile, head coach,
talking about Drake May.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
After the game, and we have high expectations for Drake.
He has high expectations for himself. Phil continue to improve
and know that he'll stay humble through this all. And
you know again, and as far as the performance tonight,
I thought it was, you know again, in first view,
you know, pretty good. He was good enough to win,
and he took care of the football man.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
And again, so some of it is he's had a
year seasoning. A lot of it is they did a
great job of evaluating, and you get a little bit lucky, right,
you get it a little bit lucky. So much of it. Look,
would I love to say it's about coaching competency. It is,
and he's a more than competent Mike Rable is an
(03:21):
excellent coach, But a lot of it is when you
got the quarterback right, everything becomes easier. You track every
one of these teams that are doing well, and the
quarterback is a gigantic factor as to why it's really
(03:42):
really hard to win if you don't have quality quarterback play. Now,
you got to put things in place. You got to
rebuild the offensive line. They gotta have some weapons around him.
But look at the teams that are playing well, look
at the teams that are playing poorly, and there is
one common denominator quarterback. Correct, here's Drake May, the quarterback,
talking about his weapons.
Speaker 3 (04:02):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
Now that trust was built up. Uh, you know, probably
when I was in middle school, when he was playing
in the league. It's it was long ago. You know,
guys like him and Hunter and Mac. You know, you
trust those guys for what they've done in this league.
And I just tried to give him chances. And you know,
Steph and you know, you break a couple of tackles
getting in zone, but you know those guys are great
for us tonight.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
Yeah, Stefan Diggs nine catches, Hey mac Hollis who likes
to get dressed up as a bunch of stuff. Hunter
Henry of course been around for a minute among the
weapons that he has, and they're giving him, they're getting
him time to throw. But Stefan Diggs being the go
to guy, and obviously Stefan Diggs is one of those
guys like AJ Brown. If he doesn't get the ball,
(04:43):
he's gonna complain. And if he complains then then it
ruins your team. But yeah, Vrabel's done a great job.
I think the best thing they've done is with the
defense and bringing over players and understanding exactly what they needed,
when they needed how they needed it, and doing a
good job of evaluating, building rebuilding this defense. But Drake
(05:06):
may coming into his own. You have to give the
front office credit. You gotta give Vrabel credit for putting
enough pieces around him. They ran the football just enough.
When you get the quarterback right, the rest of it
is a lot easier. When you get the point guard right,
the rest of it is a lot easier, a lot easier.
(05:28):
Matter of fact, let's get to our Tyraq play of
the day. For forty years, Tyrek has been helping customers
find the right tires for how what where they drive
ship fast and free and back by free road as
protection with convenient installation options like mobile tire Inslation tyrek
dot com the way tire buying should be. Here's our
tyrack play today, care of ninety eight point five, the
Sports Hub and the Patriots Radio Network.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
Snapped to me, looks to his left, he pumps, he throws.
Speaker 6 (05:49):
Touchdown Patriots and who caught it?
Speaker 7 (05:52):
Trivia Henderson ha trient for the rookie Travon Henderson, who
of course three touchdowns, two rushing that one receiving.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
And it's our ti Raq play of the Day, buyer.
There's a lot that goes into the success and the
turnaround of the Patriots. Obviously, I think their ability to
get that defense up and running pretty smoothly is a
big part. Don't get me wrong. The soft schedule doesn't
hurt either. And then Drake May's emergence and the way
(06:28):
in which they and and look, this is part of
it is recruiting and signing in free agents. It's all
it is. There's a hit rate, it's not one hundred percent.
Some of it it's about evaluations. But Drake May, a
guy who people thought was the number one prospect, then
fell a little bit, then raised, and the Patriots got him.
Turns out to be right now the best prospect in
(06:49):
two years ago.
Speaker 8 (06:49):
Strappt Yeah, Drake May is the biggest deal for me.
And I love their wins is you pointed out that
they have, especially the one in Buffalo, the one that
they had in Tampa, and so I'm not going to
hold their other wins against them. They are against kind
of the bottom of the National Football League, and one
of their losses was against the Steelers in a game
(07:10):
where they turned the ball over five times. They lost
by a touchdown in that game, and then the other
loss is the one to the Raiders. So I think
that they've at least proven with those road wins in
the games that they the game that they lost to
the Steelers, it's like, all right, if you just don't
turn the ball over five times and turn it over
at the goal line, maybe that's a win for them,
and they're even better and have the best record in
(07:31):
the National Football League. But to me, it's all about
Drake May. And it's funny because it's the draft class
of twenty twenty four that we will continue to be
talking about like we did I don't know, nineteen eighty three,
like we do of the Sam Darnold, Baker Mayfield, Josh Allen,
Lamar Jackson draft class like those. It's those classes that
(07:52):
stand out. So when I see like Drake May have success,
this may be completely unfair, but I go to the
point of Ryan Poles of the Chicago Bears pointing out
the fact in the film room because he so wanted
to draft Caleb Williams, which was fine, it was absolutely fine,
(08:12):
but it makes me laugh to think of here was
a guy who was poking holes in Drake May, trying
to convince others that they needed Caleb Williams to be
their quarterback, which again I think a lot of people thought,
and Drake May shining like he did, moves well in
the pocket. I was just really really impressed with how
Drake May's come along in the two years.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Yeah, and last year it was Jade Daniels was the guy, right,
he had an unbelievable breakthrough season and there was some
regression this year. Obviously the elbow injury now is going
to help that regression. Caleb Williams is playing better. I
think the point you made is a really good one.
And again, let me just personalize it, hey, because when
you're trying to evaluate players. Oftentimes you have to do
(08:54):
it on film. Okay, I was able to recruit a
couple of kids in person. Stil you get them and
it can be different. You know, I have a player
every one of my staff and I had remember I
had changed out three assistants for three new assistants. All
six assistants were like, we got to get this guy.
(09:16):
And to date, he not playing very well. And you know,
I don't know if we missed. I don't know yet.
It's still too early. But the point is it is
a in evaluations and inexact science. And I saw him
in person. I'm like, man, for our level, this is
really really good. And so I can tell you and like, honestly,
the Patriots, if you ask them honestly, would you have
(09:39):
taken Jane Daniels ahead of him? Would you have taken
Kayleb Williams ahead of him? Right? Well, what if the
Bears drafted drafted Drake May. What if the Commander's still
drafted Jayane Williams, would you have drafted Kayla Williams? What
would everything look like? It's such an I mean the
Chargers have this with Justin Herbert. Yeah, the Dolphins took Tua,
but had Tua and Herbert both been there, And you know,
(10:01):
Telasco does join us every week. We can ask him
next week he'll answer the question. But if he answered
it honestly, they probably would have taken to a even
with all their concerns. So there is a bit of
a luck factor. Guys do get better, guys do get worse,
Guys getting some interesting situations and you know, going through
two different coaching staffs, all those things are interesting. But
(10:21):
you're right. I mean, Drake May and that quarterback class,
like Caleb Williams, it's so up and down. We still
don't know where that settles. Yeah, Daniels was so good
in year one and it's been so wonky in year two.
We still don't know. Drake May as of now is
playing the best football. We'll see if he ends up
becoming the best quarterback.
Speaker 8 (10:41):
Yeah, the Daniels portion of it, you're hoping that he
can stay healthy. But I also think that there's something
to Cliff Kingsbury and making sure that Jayden Daniels didn't
plateau after his rookie season, because there was some question
as well, like in Arizona with Kyler Murray and where
the Cardinals were, and now that he's not there anymore
in Kyler Murray kind of is the same guy or
(11:03):
maybe worse than before. Maybe it's not all on Kingsbury's plate. However,
that is something that they're gonna have to prove in
Washington in years to come.
Speaker 6 (11:11):
This is the best of the Doug gott Leeb Show

Okay, okay, I will get you a bottle, and then
at some point we need to share this bottle.
Speaker 5 (13:10):

Speaker 5 (13:16):
I'll ven mill you will you? Yeah, maybe half of it.
Speaker 1 (13:20):
You don't need to Venmo me, I got it. I'm
good for it. I'm good for it. But you know,
wait until we're gonna do a little tasting after this.
It's not Gollip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. It
is a Friday, a football Friday, and we're getting into November.
It's weird though we have some big games, but Dan,
you and I talked about this, like November fifteenth, usually
(13:41):
huge games in college football, a ton of them, and
it feels like there's three or four Is that fair?
Three or four really big ones?
Speaker 8 (13:49):
Well, yeah, there's I think there's there's a couple of
things at play number one. It used to be, especially
for the Big Ten, the Big Ten would wrap up
the week before Thanksgiving. Then when you go to a
nine game schedule when you have conference expansion, they've been
wrapping up this Saturday after Thanksgiving. But this should have been,
you know, leading up to a big week. I also
(14:11):
think that there are a few more marquee games that
we would have gotten that we wouldn't have gotten because
of college expansion, specifically this Texas Georgia game that's coming
up on Tomorrow night in Athens. So while there are
expectations that we would have these monstrous showdowns. I do
think that some changes in college football at least have
(14:33):
allowed some of these to still remain at this point.
Speaker 1 (14:36):
Yes, I'll also point out, and again I'm that guy
that's going to say, one of the things that has
hurt a lot of these games is you've had a
coaching change, and you know, because of the coaching change,
and I know they've tried to change the rule, but
guys were allowed to get in the portal, you've lost
a couple of those players. They've kind of ruded, you know,
they become kind of rudderless ships. So like Florida Ole Miss. Obviously,
(15:02):
if the records were the same, even if they hadn't fired,
Florida hadn't fired their coach. But now when you fired
your coach, you lose a sense of purpose. Like Florida
ain't beating Ole Miss.
Speaker 8 (15:14):
No, Florida Ole Miss is only intriguing because of the
Layton Kiffen angle and the rumors, sure whether they're real or.
Speaker 5 (15:20):
Not, he Kentucky laid waste to Florida last week.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
Yeah, and Kentucky, you know, like he's fighting for his
job or the perception of him fighting for his job.
So there's not a ton of them, but there are
a lot of games where it feels like if they
hadn't been ad a coaching change, how much more competitive
would this game be? You know, and I think the
world the word is a lot, a lot more competitive.
(15:45):
Like you know, Oklahoma State Kansas State, it was been
a good rivalry. Kansas State obviously disappointing her. Oklhama State
really disappointing here. But had Mike Gundy not been fired,
what would their record be? Would hass Hani their quarterback?
Would he be coming back trying to play? I don't know.
Speaker 8 (15:59):
So to branch this out, this is if you'll just
give me a few seconds here to remember earlier on
the season when kirkirb Street was complaining about the college
football schedule in a way and I think he was saying,
and please correct me if I'm wrong, but it was
too bad that all these great games are happening at
the same time, that maybe one Marquee game is playing
(16:23):
on one network and then another Marquee games playing on
another network, specifically at night. Do you guys remember that conversation?
Speaker 5 (16:30):
I have the sound here, Okay, let's give it a listen.
Speaker 10 (16:33):
It's another example of why we need eventually a commissioner's office,
like the NFL has a commissioner's office, right, And there
are a lot of different layers to what that office
could do. Obviously in this nil and portal era and
the realignment era, I think the biggest thing that I
(16:54):
think sometimes as a guy who eats and breathes college football,
there are some weeks in college football or it's just
there might be one good game, and there are other
weeks like this week. You could argue this is the
greatest weekend of the entire year. Starting Friday night there's
good games, yeah, and then from game day and then
after game day noon eastern all the way. If you're
(17:16):
crazy like me, you'll watch BYU in Colorado at ten
fifteen they start, and that'll go to whatever one in
the morning, and you're thinking, man, why wouldn't we have
somebody instead of the Big ten in their own silo,
the SEC and their silo, the Big twelve and the ACC.
Wouldn't it be great if we had a commissioner's office
(17:37):
to just kind of like, let's spread some of these
games out.
Speaker 8 (17:41):
And so, Doug, is that kind of the point that
you're looking at this week and yeah, we got Texas
Georgia as the game, but maybe there's not as much
would you be along with what Herb Street said in that, I.
Speaker 1 (17:53):
Know, because I don't think there's a way to pre
plan for it, right, I agree? Yep. You know LSU
and arc and SAW is supposed to be a rivalry game,
right Arkansas? Is that a disappointing year? Fired their head
coach Bob Petrino hasn't been able to fix it and
so and LSU fired their head coach, right, So there.
I don't know what LSU's record would have been had
(18:14):
they not fired Brian Kelly, but I think I think
it would have been a completely different game had they not,
you know they.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
And I think it would be.
Speaker 8 (18:24):
I think it would just be really difficult to lay
that out, especially with conferences and their own needs. However,
and this is my point, especially with the talk of
the Big Ten and private equity and a grant of
rights that goes another twenty years, and sure is it
good for is it good for an Ohio state to
do this? Are USC and Michigan right and not wanting
(18:44):
to sign on to this sort of agreement? If we
had college football, like we all actually feared we would
get that week in the college football that we fear
is basically a forty school college football world, right, So
we would in that world, we actually would get what
Kirk kurb Street is talking about. But I don't know
(19:07):
if we necessarily want that, because there would be good games,
you know. You know how come I know that because
they see what the NFL does with thirty two teams.
There's a great game every single week in the National
Football League. Some weeks there's three or four of them.
We have one hundred and thirty schools. We really have
eighty schools that are relevant maybe if you want to
(19:28):
say in the Power for and how it's laid out,
but seventy to eighty schools, and that's just really tough
to do with all of those schools. So my point
being is, from what you're saying of what is maybe
kind of a downer week in college football, the only
way that we can cure something like that and do
something that Kirk kurb Street wants would be something that
nobody wants in college football, And that's like a forty
(19:50):
to fifty school.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
League, right, which is kind of what we already have, right,
We have it without having.
Speaker 8 (19:57):
It well, and you may feel that way, but I
feel that there's still independence with the SEC and the
Big Ten. And honestly, when you look at the schedule,
like the SEC is carrying a lot of the weight
of the good matchup, especially Oklahoma Alabama another one on
the slate there. But if you had the top six
(20:18):
schools from the Big Ten, if you had the top
ten schools from the SEC, and you ended up expanding
that way, that's the type of college football that Kirk
kurb Street would want that I think people would want
if they wanted great college football games every week. Otherwise,
this is kind of what we're going to get again.
Speaker 1 (20:35):
I truly believe though, if you look at it and
you were to take away the records, take away the records, right,
Virginia Tech Florida State. Historically that should be a great game.
Now Britain Tech has been very good in five years
or so. Florida State it's been two years since they
(20:56):
were undefeated. But yeah, then they have mishmash ones where
because of the new Big Ten, Ucla, Ohio State, Perdue,
Washington right where Washington in November should be playing Oregon
or Oregon State. Some you know, some sort of obviously,
you know, with some sort of proximity rival and that's
what the new that's what you're talking about with the
(21:16):
new league and so many teams and it can be
hard to manage.
Speaker 8 (21:20):
Yeah, I actually think that the expansion has helped the
schedule a little bit. I do think, because we wouldn't
get Oklahoma Alabama, we wouldn't get Texas Georgia. Like the
addition of Oklahoma and Texas. But those two teams and
already a jam packed SEC. And well, you and I
may differ on like what happens with the top of
the conference. I understand that the SEC is deeper in
(21:41):
terms of competition than the Big Ten is. The Big
Ten's bottom just does not have the gravitas, if you will,
that the other that the SEC does, at least with
their bad teams. Like we still kind of give a
crap about some of their bad teams. Sure we do,
we do.
Speaker 1 (21:58):
It's the Gottlieb Show. It's Fox Sports, right, it's also
a Friday here on the Doug Gottlieb Show. For forty years,
Tyre's been helping customers find the right tires for how,
what and where they drive ship fast and freeing back
by free roadst protection with the convenience slation options like
Bubble Tire Slation, tyrit dot Com the way tire buying
should be. You know it is Friday. We do make
our picks in something we call the Gambler. Kill the music.
(22:22):
So the Gambler is based like this. Everybody has one pick.
Cortiation Stewart has to have two. It's one that you
feel so confident in You're willing to tell all your friends, Hey,
you may screw up the rest of the weekend. This
is your pick. Let's start with Jason Stewart for the
Jason Karlay.
Speaker 9 (22:39):
I'll take it from here, Doug, I'll take it from here.
My Jay's two team parlay starts. You got a race
to the bed in window. These are the two games
this evening closest to the time right now, Oregon hosts Minnesota.
They're giving twenty five and a half currently, and I'm
going to take Oregon and I need to pair it
with one other team to make the Jay's two team parlay. Now.
(23:00):
I don't know if you guys been watching the wine
in the Louisville game, but money has been pouring in
on the Cardinals. I'm going to take the Cardinals, who
are it looks like they are giving two points at
home as opposed to getting six points. They're giving two
points at home to Clemson. Just a quick membo to Clemson.
Kevin Mack is not walking through that door tonight Louisville
(23:21):
to Oregon and thank me on Monday.
Speaker 1 (23:26):
Gam you got to learn plea right, okay, damn byer Doug.
Speaker 8 (23:33):
Last week the National Football League taught me a lesson.
When Las Vegas is trying to tell you something, just
go with it. I don't have a lot of confidence
in JJ McCarthy as the Vikings quarterback. They just lost
to the Ravens at home. Jjccarthy's played about two quarters
of good football this season. One of those quarters actually
happened in Week one in Chicago, where the Bears dominated
(23:54):
the Vikings for three quarters, yet Minnesota rallied for a win. Well,
those two teams playing where you are right now in
Minneapolis on Sunday, Doug, and Minnesota is a two and
a half point favorite against these red hot, come from
behind good Mojoe Bears. They're trying to tell me something.
I'm taking the Vikings minus two and a half. I
(24:17):
have no reason why. I think there'd be every reason
to go with Chicago. But they're saying Minnesota minus two
and a half. Give me the Vikings minus two and
a half at home against the Bears.
Speaker 1 (24:28):
I'm gonna go NFL as well. The Denver Broncos have
become like maligned because their offense has struggled. Right, you
got Bo Nicks in his second years. The starter has
just been okay, struggling turning the football over.
Speaker 8 (24:45):
Probably not gonna have JK Dobbins this weekend.
Speaker 1 (24:47):
Yeah, not gonna have JK Dobbins stop me Herds before JK.
Dobbins is hurt. But he does get hurt. But they're
a three and a half point dog at home against
Kansas City Chiefs now again. I don't know what the
magic elixir is with Andy Reid off of bye week,
but the Andy Reid off a bye week thing is
a real thing. It's a real thing. Now. Back to
(25:12):
back road games are hard, but they had a week off.
I'm taking the Chiefs come hell or high water. Andy
Reid off off of bye game. I think he's lost
a one game ever in the history of his life
off of bye game as a head coach, So gonna
take the Chiefs and gonna lay the points. You're welcome, Sammy.
Speaker 3 (25:30):
Let's look at Wisconsin at number two Indiana beajors a
noon Eastern time on Big ten Network. Now you look
at the mindset of each of these teams. Wisconsin broke
a six game losing streak, finally getting a win. Get
taking some heat off of Luke Fickle. They beat the
ranked of Washington Huskies last week thirteen to ten. Maybe
(25:51):
they're feeling a little loose. They come into Bloomington as
twenty eight and a half point underdogs. And then you
look at Indiana coming off that last second VIC on
the road at Penn State, twenty eight and a half
four touchdown favorite are the Hoosiers?
Speaker 5 (26:05):
I like the uh.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
I'm gonna take the Wisconsin Badgers with the points. I
think it'll be a blowout. They'll lose decisively, but not
by more than not by twenty and a half or more.
So give me the Badgers with the points.
Speaker 1 (26:17):
Wow, you're taking the Badgers at Indiana. I take out
their first big win, the biggest win of the year.
Speaker 8 (26:24):
If you told me the over under was forty three
and a half, I would have thought that's total yards
for Wisconsin that like truly, I.
Speaker 3 (26:31):
Just think, man, I just twenty Are you telling me
that the Boosiers are gonna win by four touchdowns or more?
Speaker 1 (26:38):
Yeah?
Speaker 9 (26:38):
I think we need to qualify this by saying, hey,
Google e Moogli, I don't know if Sam's gotten again.
We're picked right this sw So I think you kind
of qualify that by saying I'm typically wrong here.
Speaker 5 (26:47):
I am.
Speaker 3 (26:47):
I've been prefacing most of my picks with don't listen
to me. I'm like the crazy guy to the bridge.
Speaker 1 (26:52):
One, two, three, four five. They won five of their
ten games by more than four touchdow downs.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
I know, I know again, and I know you're coming
to Bend State and you're maybe forty eight twenty four
will be.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
A thing you make. You may be right, you may
be right. And Wisconsin did switch quarterbacks last week.
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Got them a whole thirteen points, right right, they were
thirteen points.
Speaker 5 (27:17):
I might be crazy.
Speaker 1 (27:19):
This is This is what they scored during their losing
streak previous to that game. Fourteen ten ten zero zero
zero seven zero thirteen.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
Yeah, I know, I know, I just fort twenty eight.
All right, Well we'll see. Well, we said we'll see.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
I don't think it's extas nos. I think it's Jimmy
and Jill. Well, that is re singler. So let's sing no, Wow, No.
Speaker 5 (27:48):
When hold ssconsin will fight?
Speaker 1 (27:50):
No? When to walk wait, go back? When to run?
You never down? Old money sitting.
Speaker 6 (28:08):

Speaker 1 (28:19):
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show Fox Sports Radio. So I
want to get to brock perty and whether or not
he's the right, right, right choice. I like this. If
you're listening on radio, why it's gonna be mad? Yes,
you gotta be mad. That's clever, it's clever. Mark Dominic
in a second. Okay, So Dan, I'm sorry I was wrong.
(28:46):
I'm stupid, you're smart. I'm uh, I'm ugly, you're good looking.
This is my way of apologizing. Okay. Uh. Last night
in our game, are lost to Saint Thomas. Early on
in the first half. We have a player, uh, Dontrell Hewlett,
(29:07):
who's a point guard and had been trending towards starting
and he was trying to get back defensively planted his foot.
He may have jumped and landed on the foot. I
still don't know what happened. Uh, But there was a
time out called because of injury, and I was about
(29:27):
to yell at him for what I thought was getting
out of the way of the charge when he fell down,
and then I looked at his leg, his foot, and
I realized why he had gone down. It was a
cam scatterboo type of injury. Oh geez, And uh, I
just saw the foot be in the wrong direction, and
(29:50):
a couple of my players looked like they were going
to vomit, and one was about to start crying. And
you know, we we gathered him and we sat him down,
We calmed it down, we just talked about the game
and then went over to check done him. And then
I saw it an open wound fracture. And you guys
know that I talk about this all the time. There's
three types of people, right, I don't want to see it,
(30:11):
don't show it to me. I'll just see it once
so everybody knows what we're talking about and can't watch
it enough. And I've always been type three. And my
my logic behind it is like I just I don't
know I've my my ex wife gave berth and like
one of the most fascinating experiences of my life is
when I saw her take them take my babies from
(30:33):
her stomach in a C section, right two different times.
The first time, you know, we were so freaked out.
The babies came early. I saw a little bit, but
when my son came, like I watched the entire surgery.
I was like fascinated by I'm sitting there with popcorn.
This is amazing. And I always think, Okay, well guy,
everybody recovers, right, they'll be fine. Uh yeah, my opinion
(30:54):
changed last night. I mean, I still I have it
on I have the photo on my phone, but I
have it because I have to share it when allowed
to with the doctors. Doctor Alan Shamrock, who's our ankle
and foot specialists with the Packers, helps us as well
thanks to him at Prevea, you know where he's been
kind of communicating. But I will tell you that.
Speaker 8 (31:16):
Holy cow, that's awful.
Speaker 1 (31:19):
Like I've experienced a lot of things, I've seen a
lot of stuff. That was a lot and just update
for anybody who saw it or doesn't care about it. Whatever,
he had surgery. They closed the wound thankfully. Yeah, they
they got the leg back in place, and I again,
(31:39):
he's gonna play basketball again, I believe. But regardless of that,
we're just concerned about infection right now because that's what
happens with those open wounds, and we're just all our
prayers are with him and his family. The doctors in
Saint Paul have been amazing, but a Holy cow is
not ready for that, damn. So do any of those
(32:01):
videos or photos that I sent you guys on group text.
My bad won't be doing that in the future. This
is the new empathetic Doug Gottlieb understanding that that's a lot,
especially when you see it in person.
Speaker 8 (32:17):
Yeah, just to never it's never been my thing. I
I don't know if it started with Joe Thaisman. I
think that's when it when it did where it just was,
you know, you see that as a young kid and
there's no Yeah, just it's always been difficult for me
to see those things. I hope your player fully recovers
Dontrelle was that his name? Yes, Yeah, best wishes to him.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Yeah, he's a great kid, and you know he was
all loopy on on pain meds and he was trying
to get back on defense. You told me not to jump,
and I jumped like dontrell I. So don't don't care
about any mistakes you made right now. I just want
you to feel better. Oh that was rough. Stut Gottlieb
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. I'll ask you, Dan Byer,
(33:00):
if you were Kyle Shanahan, would you start rock Perty
for the Niners?
Speaker 5 (33:05):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Yes, Yeah. The way it works is like, look, in
addition to uh, in addition to the fact that rock
Purty has done nothing wrong other than MS games because
of injury, and we know that. You know, Mac Jones
has always been the apple of the eye. It's once
you give him that contract, it's his job unless he absolutely,
positively completely butchers it. There's just that that's that's the
(33:32):
way it works, is that they get right a first
refusal if you will. And and the other part is
it kills leadership. You know, if you're brock Purty, you
have to be the unquestioned leader of the offense. And
if there's any hesitation between when you put him in
when you don't put him in, and if he's healthy,
(33:52):
a healthy, healthy, ready to go, that that kills his leadership. Well,
let me ask Mark Domink. Maybe he has a different opinion. Okay,
he's been a GM in the NFL, he's where the
NFL for twenty five years. He joins us here on
Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. I know you
don't want to say the guy who makes the most
money has to get, has to have right a first refusal,
(34:13):
but that is how it works, especially with brock Perty.
And it's not like it's not like, you know, he's
been replaced and Whalley pipped to that extent.
Speaker 11 (34:24):
Yeah, No, I think you're absolutely right, and I think
it's a couple of different things, right. I Mean a
big point of this is Rock Perty has for the
most part, for Kyle Shanahan, John Lynch has been a winner,
and so you know, I know that you know, twenty
twenty four wasn't ideal and this year hasn't been great.
I don't think he's been himself, but he absolutely deserves
to be the first one out of the tunnel and
be on that field. I actually, Doug, I look at
(34:45):
it when you when you kind of look at the
NFC just in general, right, and you start to already
start to put the picture together of you know, what's
the standings, like, what's the conference look like? In the NFC?
To me, the one team that's on the outside looking
in that still feels like they should be at the
top seven in the playoffs all the San Francisco forty
nine ers, and I think I would put Rock Pretty
in because I think they've got to just catch the
(35:06):
Chicago Bears, and I think the front of the seven
will all already be set. I don't think that the
Vikings are going to make a run. I don't think
Dallas will. I don't think Washington can. It's really coming
down to the Kenda Bears. Hold on, I think the
forty nine ers with Rock Pretty can.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, Mark Dominic is our guest. Mark.
The Patriots turnaround was on full display yesterday. I'm interested
in Rock, not Rock Perty. Sorry, in Drake May. Where
did you have him evaluated in last year's NFL draft?
Speaker 11 (35:39):
Yeah? It was tight, you know for me with Drake May,
I probably wasn't quite as high, but I mean I
liked him better than you know, the bow Nicks. I
liked him better than the Michael Pennix Because I'm just
not a huge as me. Though I love Steve Young,
I'm just not a huge left tended quarterback fan for
the way the ball spins for everybody, and so that's
kind of a little bit different. But that's you know,
it doesn't mean you're not going to take one. You know.
(36:01):
I was kind of more JJ McCarthy in that realm
of like, you know, six through ten or six through
twelve is where I thought Drake May is. But he's
clearly proven me wrong. You know, the athletes there that
we get to see in terms of him running the football,
but the decision making getting the ball out, you know
making you know, I think the biggest thing with Drake
May is even games last last last night, when you
watch a younger quarterback be able to throw the ball
(36:23):
the way he can and end up close to three
hundred yards and and you know completing you know, almost
nine percent of his passes in yardsbur attempt at this
point in season. Those are great times when you realize
that your number two wide receiver is your tight end,
Like you really don't have a ton of ton of
weapons on the offensive side still at the receiver room
or the tight end room, and so when you get
to have a year where you're going to hopefully put
(36:44):
those in. That's pretty exciting. Well, and again, Josh McDaniels
is developing another quarterback and they're consistently putting thirty points
on the board every week. And with that, you should
win when you've got a Rabel defense.
Speaker 1 (36:55):
Stull Gottlieb Show here on on Fox Sports Radio. Obviously,
the Jets are going to have to rebuild. They sold
off as many pieces as they can. What what what's
your belief that this coaching staff is the right staff
for the rebuild.
Speaker 11 (37:14):
I just I think it will be. I would not
be one and done with Aaron Glenn. I just I
wouldn't do that. I just don't think that that's going
to really help anything at all. And I think I'm
just going to, you know, bite my tongue and believe
that I'm getting Dan Campbell Junior and that it's just
going to take a little time. And Dan Campbell probably
came in with a little bit better you know, situation
at quarterback for sure, but also, uh, some pieces were there.
(37:36):
I mean, the Jets now that Garrett Wilson's going to
I are and I know it's three to four weeks
or four weeks. I just don't think I put Garrett
Wilson back on the football field this year. And there's
just no point. And they're battling the Titans right now
for the number one pick in the draft, and so
I think you stick with this staff. I think you
stick with this plan. Obviously, you know, coach Glenn I
(37:56):
soon bought into trading Sauce Gardner Quinn Williams, and so
because he's bought into those things, I feel like you've
got to you know, he's thinking long term. I think
you can't have to think long term with him. And
does that mean you know, four or five years now,
but it doesn't mean two or at least three. Yes,
I think you do. And I think Jets Man's just
got to understand that that's just the way it should be,
because that's the only way to really kind of start
to build a culture.
Speaker 1 (38:18):
Agree with you, So, Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox
Sports Radio, Building a culture is is really is is everything. Okay,
let's let's scatter around the league a little bit. Uh,
Brian Dable getting fired? What were your thoughts of why
they did it? Now?
Speaker 11 (38:37):
No, I didn't love it. Uh, you know, just because
I felt like, you know, what's the rush in terms
of what they've got to get done? Why do they
feel like they need to hurry up and and and
and like go of a coach when you've got time,
like there's time here to kind of sit back and
kind of see how the season folds for a few
more weeks. He's obviously, you know, got to stop Jackson.
You know, Jackson dart from you know, launching them with
(38:58):
his head in every run. But at least here was
oat with Jackson dark like that's why you had him there.
I thought, so to turn around and give it to
myke Cafka, uh and to say, look, we're going to
move on. Maybe there was some rumblings on the inside
of the organization that was a little bit more uh
loud than I guess I would have thought. And so
I my thunking is that I don't love it. I
(39:20):
would have waited probably until like the last month and
just until December if I was going to do it.
You're already, Doug. You know how this works in the
coaching world that the GM has already got a list
in his in his in his desk of who he's
going to you know, start to interview and who he's
going to start to move forward with. I guess the
only right thing here to say is if they knew
they were going to do it, and they're going to
keep Joe Shane, which they said they're going to, then
(39:40):
if you're going to peel the band aid off, go ahead.
But the only thing it gets me pause is if
Kapka comes in and does okay, does he automatically get
do they do they do the search they way they
could or should. I'm not rooting against Kafka. I think
he's a smart, young, you know, former quarterback. But I
thought it was a month too early.
Speaker 1 (39:59):
Uh got show here on Fox Sports Radio that is
the voice of Mark Dominic. He joins, us, I agree,
month too early? Like what what is the point? I mean?
I guess they want to give Kafka a good a
good run here, But yeah, it just strikes me as
odd in terms of in terms of the timing, Like
if you think Kafrika can be the head coach and
(40:20):
he's coached with you, he can still be the head coach,
Like that's not doesn't really change when you're running an
organization as a as an interim. Denver's eight and two.
They welcome in Kansas City, but they really struggled offensively,
really struggled. How fixable is the quarterback situation there?
Speaker 11 (40:41):
I think it is fixable. I mean, you know, this
is a team that's over the last couple of weeks,
has certainly struggled. I mean it was you know, you
don't ever want to see only ten points against the Raiders.
You feel like that's a huge mistake. But if you
just take a couple and I know you've got Monti Kiffin,
our defensive coordinator in Tampa for years, we would always
have Monday morning meetings after games, and you know, it
would be like what went right, what went wrong? And
(41:01):
mine if even always if we just want to give
it up that one ad R pass play, we'd have
had much better statistics and the coach done you, Risley,
But MANI we gave up that play, right. And so
you know, if you if you look at the Denver Broncos,
they put forty points on the board, they put thirty
points on the board. It's there. I think it can
be there. I think the running game is the thing
that's really been hard for them to kind of, you know,
(41:22):
really find the consistency. Even though you know, obviously Dobbins
has carried the ball over one hundred fifty times, I
still feel confident. I think bow Knicks has played well.
I think you're looking for him to take strides as
the season goes along towards the end of the season.
He did that last year, and I think he'll do
that this year. You know, this is a good time
for them to have a buy they come out, They've
got some road games, but they've got some winnable games
(41:44):
on this schedule of the next month with Washington, the
Raiders again in Jaguars. I think it's going to put
them in position where they're going to make the postseason.
I don't see them as being a jugger not in
the postseason. But you know, this offense I think will
come back and be more than twenty to twenty eight
point squading team. And I think you'll see that right
when they come out of the Spy. It's a good
time for them after they get this Chiefs games out
of the way.
Speaker 1 (42:04):
Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, why
were the Packers so conservative offensively against the Eagles?
Speaker 11 (42:15):
Yeah, I think they didn't want to beat themselves, Doug.
I think that was the big concern, is like how
do we not beat ourselves in this game instead of
like let's go be aggressive. And I think coach Laflore
talked about that a little bit, and that's the way
I felt like. I felt they went in the game going, hey, look,
if we don't turn the ball over, we don't make mistakes,
we're gonna win this game. And instead it was too
conservative in my opinion, and that kind of cost him
the opportunity. I know, you know, Jordan Love didn't have
(42:37):
his best night by any stretch. You know the sacks
and you know the completion percentage. But I think that
was the main thing is I looked at it the day,
We're going to run the ball, we're gonna not make mistakes,
and we're gonna win this game. But instead what happened was,
you know, they they got sacks, Jordan Love had the fumble.
I think they had two fumbles they gave. Jacobs had
the fumble also, right, So I think it was that
it was playing too safe, too casual. I think the
(42:57):
Packers are good enough offense where they got to push
it and then know that Tucker Craft's not there, But
I feel confident with the with the still with Luke
Musgrave and the group they have, they can still push
the ball down the field. And I think you got
to see them do that.
Speaker 1 (43:10):
Okay, what about the Eagles, Like they won, AJ Brown
still upset and having been at the game, Like I understand,
like I'm a coach, right, Like I don't want to
hear any of any of complaining. We won the game
in Lambeau. But it doesn't take a blind man to
point out like they don't really utilize him. I don't really.
It's not like they're even using them as a decoy.
(43:32):
They're just kind of running offense and trying to win ugly,
which has worked for them. They won a Super Bowl,
but in another Super Bowl. I get it. Uh, but
he does have a little bit of a little bit
of a point. What are your thoughts on the lack
of utilization of AJ Brown?
Speaker 11 (43:47):
Yeah, you know, he's inactive against the Giants, comes back
and only sees three targets before that. You know, I
know he complained a little bit when he looked back.
You know, you're still averaging eight to nine targets a game.
And to me, yeah, do you want as a receiver,
would you like that fourteen or fifteenth Sure, But if
you're getting targeted consistently eight to ten times a game,
that should be what you're a chance to win a championship,
(44:08):
and you've got Smith on the other side, that should
be balanced that you were kind of looking for. I
expect them to look at AJ Brown this week and
see him more consistently in that way in terms of
you know, getting him the football, you know, making sure
that he's got the opportunity to see the ball come
to him at least eight to ten times. And I
would be shocked if they didn't. I think that that's
exactly what they'll want to do. I think we'll see
(44:28):
that against the Lions on Sunday night. And I think
that it's not because A. J. Brown's complaining, it's just
that I think that's what they want to be. They've
shown it early in the season. I think they'll show
it again. They came out of that game against the
Giants he didn't address They slow rolled in against you know,
the next week and three three targets. But this week,
I think you'll see the eight to ten targets like
we normally do.
Speaker 1 (44:47):
Stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, let's
let's talk some Steelers football, shall we. I mean, man
hammered by the Chargers, and the Chargers are so banged up, right,
so banged up. But more than anything, like Aaron Rodgers,
(45:08):
it's not trending in the way of being better. Can
they get this thing to a reasonable place like there,
look there, Mike Tomlin's the master of being you know,
nine and eight, right, nine and eight, just above five hundred.
But that's what it feels like. This team is getting
back towards and it was one that went all in.
(45:28):
Is there any fixing where they are on this trend?
Speaker 11 (45:32):
It's it's number one for I think Aaron Rodgers finding
that number two receiver when you watch that game, you
saw it, you know, the ball just ricochet and ot
receiver's hands that are wide open and they just can't
make the play. You know. Having Metcalfs one thing, but
having somebody else that can really compliment him is really
what's lacking in Pittsburgh. And yeah, that could have been
George Pickens and we'll see how that all plays out.
(45:53):
But I got to think Omar Kahn, Mike Tomlin this offseason.
That's got to be a number one important thing to do.
The second thing is, you know, I like Warren, it
just doesn't feel like he's really the They're using him
as the number one back, but just doesn't feel like
that's a typical Steelers type of running back as well,
and he's good to catch the ball back, so I
think he's a good player. But those are the two
(46:13):
things where I think offensally, but I think mainly it's
finding the number two outlet for him and if it's
not a running back. John new Smith I think played
himself for this contract, but I've never felt like he's
uber consistent across the board, and I think the Steelers
are seeing that, So I think that's really what it is.
You know, obviously the defense has been hot and cold,
and as they get to the quarterback that certainly changes everything.
(46:35):
And that's the other part is that I'm surprised where
the Steelers past rush is at this point of the season.
I would have expected it to be much stronger. I mean,
I know they've still got thirty two sacks, but I
really thought that you know what would be around ten already.
I thought her big would be at like eight or ten,
because I think he's a sending player that's going to
make a ton of money in free agency for somebody
if he can't stay in Pittsburgh. So I thought they'd
(46:55):
still be getting out the quarterback more. But I think
it comes down to Aaron Rodgers trusting the skill set
guys around him and making those plays against the Chargers
they did.
Speaker 1 (47:03):
Not us. That's the voice of reason, that's the voice
of of Mark Dominic spent over twenty years in the
NFL front office as forum general manager of the tamp
Bay Buccaneers and kind of have to join us on
a weekly basis. Mark you the best, enjoy the weekend.
We'll talk to you soon.
Speaker 11 (47:17):
So knock up those dopers, Coach, We'll do our best.
