of the Doug Gotlive Show on Fox Sports Radio. Boom
of America, Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. I hope
you're having a good day. I'll be ready. Football's here.
(00:43):
We got reaction to the NBA last night. What a
what what a game? The double overtime shooting, shot making
Raptor Celtics was out of this world. I mean out
of this world. That's how good it was. Uh and
Raptors force of Game seven. I will find out who
(01:03):
has any sort of juice left in the tank after
last night. What what a incredible night of of basketball
and incredible uh second half a fourth quarter? I mean
see me second overtime of shot making. Brandon Weeden, former
NFL quarterback, former Texans Quarterback's gonna be our guest. Texans
opened up the NFL season in mirror hours, can not wait?
(01:26):
Can't wait? Um, I can't wait to see what the
NFL season has in store for us. Because as much
as we could say, like well we should have seen
last year coming right with the Chiefs who were one
off side penalty away from going to the Super Bowl,
that's usually not the way it works. Of course, the
last time we saw the Texans they were up twenty
four nothing to the very same Chiefs from the packed
(01:48):
house in Arrowhead. It won't be a packed house obviously tonight.
And like the Chiefs did in every playoff game in
the Super Bowl, that came from behind and stomped him.
Get to that in a moment. Todd Ferman from Lock
It In on FS one, we'll get his take on
the bets tonight. By the way, how did we do
Ramo's Do you remember how we did in our in
our betting segment from last night? Because I believe, and
(02:11):
you tell me if I'm wrong, and buyer can attest
to this, I believe I had all but one pick
correct right, that would be my by my estimation, Um,
I had, I think right, we had the over under
in Well, it's actually not true because we both had
the we had the old I had the over and
Clippers nuggets. I missed the over under. I hit the
(02:33):
over on the Raptors Celtics, right, I had the Clipper
I went to an oh, and you guys both picked
against me. So that's all I know. I took the
Raptors and I took the Clippers. Big take the Raptors
into the Clippers. Big, Well, they want my nine, but
they did click cover were the right? Sorry for the
(02:56):
Raptors favorites? No, there were two and a half. One
are dogs. Yeah, and the Clippers were like seven half
point favorites by eleven, so I was one in three.
Delete this from the podcast. Hey John, how about how
Dan Buyer did I get to the Lakers are five
point favorites? You want to get that picked out now,
(03:18):
right right now for you? If you, if you would Buyer,
give you the Lakers. I like the Lakers too. I'll
take the Lakers as well. Over under is to eighteen
and a half, I go under. Yeah, I'd go under
as well. Uh, I'm gonna go under as well. What's
the over under on female staffers in Daniel houses? Uh?
(03:41):
Hotel room? Is that? I mean she's supposed to be
checking in for coronavirus. Crely, there are many ways to
check for coronavirus, right, I mean, I don't mind the
story at all. You know, did he actually break protocol?
Like that is very much a gray area. Well, I
didn't invite her inside the bubble. She was inside the bubble,
(04:04):
and you know, if she's testing, then you would think
she's been tested. This is you know, it's like a
conjugal visit. I don't know. So that's a great That's
that's like an all timer story, right, that's one of
those where we're gonna sit there and go shame, shame, shame.
Then Daniel House walks in the locker room and obviously
that the teammates to be upset that he wasn't there.
(04:26):
They needed shooting. But they're like, all, I mean, I
gotta like this, gotta give me something there right there? Alright, alright, um,
all right, more on that to come. Uh. This is
the nug Got Leave Show on Fox Sports Radio where
I give you terrible picks apparently, although my picks last
year we're outstanding for football. Will give you our picks
with with Todd Ferman a little bit later on tonight.
You know, there there is. Do you guys know the
(04:48):
expression heavy is the head that wears the crown? Do
you know that one? You know that one? Right? Ramos, Ramos,
I know, buyer is a big shake. Um. Did you
know that it's not heavy as the head? That that's
not actually the quote? No? Yeah, um, it's from King
(05:10):
Henry the the what the fourth uh? He wrote, deny
it to a king? Then happy, low, lie down. Uneasy
lies the head that wears the crown. So everybody says
heavy is the head that wears the crown, but it's
actually uneasy. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. Um.
(05:34):
The line, as I read earlier today, is poetic and dramatic.
It describes the responsibilities of a king, which creates troubles
for him. Throughout the play, we learned that Shakespeare portrayed
the king is a very weak leader who feared that
history could repeat itself. He felt pressured to rule his kingdom,
which is interesting because the chiefs, if you look on
(05:56):
their Twitter, I though't the chief's kingdom? Right? Doesn't that
what they're they're uh? Their hashtag is and this is
all the property of Patrick Mahomes. He is widely regarded
as the best player in the sport, the best quarterback
in the sport, and uneasy lies the head that wears
the crown. There's different challenges when you're the super Bowl champion,
(06:21):
you know, when you haven't won one and you're the
Chiefs for so long were um, I don't want to
say they want to laughing stock in the league. Is
the laughing stock of the league, doesn't have a great
fan support, doesn't get to the playoffs, and doesn't choke
away big leads in the NFL. But there there were.
It was a certain amount of snickering with the Chiefs
for a long long time. And and the reason behind
(06:43):
that snickering was because the Chiefs always found a way
to give it away, right they just did. They always
found a way to lose those playoff games. It's actually
the opposite of what happened last year. Previous years they
would get a big lead and then get super conservative.
(07:04):
Now they get come from behind and they you know,
let's just let Pat Mahomes get back there and sling
it and they make these ferocious comebacks. So they weren't
the laughing stock of the league, but they fit into
a little, nice, little tidy box as the team that
was always really good, great fans and would always gag
in the first game they played at home in the playoffs.
(07:25):
That's who they were. Now they're the kings of the
NFL world, and Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
Every issue is magnified. Every loss is made into what's
wrong with the team. Every interception is widely discussed and
and punctured and and you try and figure out how
that happened. How do you fix it? If they don't
(07:48):
have a great running game. It's man, they really missed
Damian Williams, who you know might not be as good
as the l s U kid, right, but the fact
is he's more experienced. Every butchered offensive line play, you
start to wonder, hey, would we be better if our
starting guard hadn't decided to opt out the season because
(08:09):
he's a doctor. All of these things. Oh the defense
that we paid Chris Jones all this money. If he
doesn't get home to the quarterback, doesn't wreck have it
every day? That that is that that is spending that
has run a muck. It's just different when you're the champion.
It's just different. You're treated differently until you win it,
(08:33):
you're still seen as, yeah, let me know when they
win it. Now you win it, and the expectations are raised,
and so much of how we judge people, how we
judge teams, is based upon the expectations, not what they
actually do. It's like I was having this discussion with
Ryan Music, who's our Steam producer, and he was pointing
(08:54):
out the stats for Paul George, and he was talking
about how Paul George he's had these He's really been
terrible in the plays, Like wait, Paul George is really good,
you know, in the deciding game of the last playoff
series and in their previous game. He was not good
last night. And his point is, and it's a good one.
Wouldn't you rather have Paul George at twenty four a night.
(09:16):
Just chock him up for twenty four night than thirty
five one night, fifteen the next night. You don't want
that inconsistency. But the reason we have such um strong
feelings about Paul George and his productivity is not because
of Paul george in productivity. It's because of the expectations,
where the expectations are created based upon the nickname he
(09:38):
gave himself playoff p where the expectations are created because
of the trade and how that changed the league, or
the fact that he was in Indie that got the
Eastern Conference finals, couldn't close and Indy wasn't good enough
for whatever it is, our expectations are what changes our
perception of how good a player Paul George is, because
without any question, he's a top in the league. But
(10:01):
does he live up to his contract? Well, that's the expectations,
and so that's what changes tonight. Only three times since
two thousand has the preseason favorite won the Super Bowl.
Twice that was the Patriots once that was the Colts.
Could have happen again. Yes, has any Reid produced UH
teams that are consistently solid, Absolutely, But any Read has
(10:23):
never won a super Bowl. He doesn't know how to
handle it. Pat Mahomes has never won a super Bowl.
Let's see if he knows how to handle it. The kids,
the Chiefs have never seen postseason success in forty eight
years or so. How will they handle it? That's really
the story of this season. Yes, there's the what is
Brady to do? Yes? Is what do the Patriots look
like without Brady? Yes, there is the Lamar Jackson last
(10:46):
year's m v P, but can't want a playoff game?
Can't you throw the football outside the numbers? Can they
play from behind? All those things? The Green Bay Packers
who got to the UNFC Championship game, but many people
don't believe they added enough weaponry for Aaron Rodd. There's
all these are legit questions, but the number one question
is you got the best player, the best quarterback in football,
combined with one of the elite coaches in the history
(11:07):
of the sport, with what's normally a great home field advantage. Obviously,
right now during pandemic, that's not included. Can you live
up to the now crazy lofty, almost unattainable expectations. Be
sure to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app Doug
(11:30):
Gottlieb Show Box Sports Radio. You know, I think it's
kind of interesting that you know, we're gonna we're gonna
watch tonight and we're gonna say, hey, it's the Cancer
Chiefs who could have gone to the Super Bowl two
years ago did go to the Super Bowl in one
(11:50):
Super Bowl last year against the Houston Texas, like they're
the undercar, they're the they're the least. They're the JV
to the varsity, which is the Cancer Chiefs. And I
think it's interesting because I may be crazy, I think
that I think the Houston Texans is very damn good.
I mean, look, the play that they made in the
off season, the personnel that they've brought in. There is
(12:13):
a very high risk factor for injury. That's it's inarguable,
inarguable that they're just it's a risky proposition what they're
throwing out there in terms of injury. And their first
three games are a beast to Kansas City Ravens at
home to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Stop if you heard this
for but Brandon Cooks is questionable tonight, right, But they
(12:37):
do have David Johnston. David Johnson and Duke Johnson no relation.
And David Johnson is a guy when he was right,
when he was healthy again, you have to go back
a couple of years ago, three years ago, in fact,
he was one of the most dominant players in the league.
(12:59):
Eighty catches is hundred, twenty targets, nine yards rushing the football.
You go to two thousand nineteen he had almost in
sixteen he had almost with a terrible team, a terrible
offensive line, almost had a thousand yards rushing, did have
fifty receptions and that was you know, Josh Rosen just
the worst team in football last year again banged up,
(13:22):
only only thirteen games, did have thirty six catches. How
old do you think? How old you David Johnson is
twenty years old. He's not over the hill, he's at
that top of the hill. But one of those guys
that when healthy, when right, is a hell of a
football player. And then he's supported by Duke Johnson was
a really good, just good solid running back. Will Fuller
(13:44):
went healthy. You heard Brandon weed and say earlier today,
best route runner on that team, Brandon Cooks and Randall Cobb,
Darren Fells plus their offensive line of sall, here's Daniel
Jeremiah on the Texans that wasn't effective line that forever
was just awful. And now it's you know, I think
a lot of people are saying, you know, this is
(14:06):
this is the best offensive line that the Shawn's played
behind this coming season, and I think almost to me,
it almost undersells it. That's like you're saying that's the
best of the worst. I think this offensive line, if
they stay healthy talent wise, is one of the you know,
seven to ten best offensive lines in football, which is
gonna be fun to watch. I'm actually excited about the
U some texts. I think they're gonna better and people think.
(14:28):
I don't know, it's if it's what people think or
what people say on radio shows and you know, and
when they're and when they're they're gambling or whatever. I
don't know, because I do think that people think they're
pretty good. I just think they're They think they're good,
and Deshaun Watson is awesome, but they're not great. But
if you think there's anything less than really good, yeah,
I don't think you're I don't think you're you're being
(14:52):
honest or you're just holding the collapse against the the
collapse against the Chiefs last year, still against them this year.
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Um, did you guys
see this? This story out of out of New York
Josh Bellamy, who was arrested this morning and charged with
(15:14):
wire fraud, bank fraud, and more for his alleged role
in a scheme to file fraudulent lawn applications seeking more
than twenty four million in P P P loans. He
was got yesterday. Oh, I got the Jets, only the Jets.
Oh Uh. Todd ferban joins us. His TV show is
(15:36):
called lock It In. Um, it's so good that they
got Clay Travis on there. Who uh Clay's first pick
college pick of the year was he was all over
the Naval Academy. Who got beat? What was it? Todd?
Fifty to three at the by U. It was definitely ugly.
I can't pick on Clay too much for that dog,
because I had maybe in the first half, and you
and I might have gone out there and done a
(15:57):
better job defending by US rushing at to act. But
I'm not quite sure what Clay is gonna do. He
all he's basically done is Harley MB favorites up to
this point. I'm gonna get a lot more competitive when
we get into the Eastern and Western Conference final. Yes, yes, yes, yes,
it will. Um. All right, let's start with kind of
overall futures. We talked to NFL m v P earlier
in the show. I know Lamar Jackson is the favorite,
(16:19):
but I can't I can't remember the last time an
NFL MVP repeated, Um, if you were looking at that,
at that future's line, who do you like to win
NFL m v P? So for me, I think a
good place to start is out in the Pacific Northwest.
And it's not really going way off the beaten path.
But all off season we've heard about Russell Wilson. Don't
what he's accomplished, and the fact that he's never gained
(16:41):
one m v P vote during his illustrious career. Seven
of one, of course, isn't going to bankrupt the books
by any stretch of the imagination. But if I was
looking at that trio of quarterbacks, he'd be a guy
that I would keep my eye on there. If you
want to go a little bit further down the list,
I know some people have talked at great lengths about
Matt Ryan with this Falcons offense and the emergence of
Calvin Ridley as a bonafied one a opposite Julio Jones.
(17:04):
I'm not quite sure I want to sign off there,
but I would look at Father Time in the form
of Philip Rivers playing behind a fortress like offensive line
in Indianapolis, a level of familiarity with Nick Seriani and
Frank Reich from his time as a member of the Chargers,
and I think that would be a flyer that I
would take for a team that I really believe can
win eleven and twelve games and ultimately become division champions.
(17:24):
That was one of my picks. That's one of my picks.
My first pick was Aaron Rodgers um I also had
Christie McCaffrey. How difficult do you think will be for
running back to win m VP? I think it's extremely
difficult because if McCaffrey wasn't seriously considered last year, you
have to wonder what he's gonna have to do this
season to try and get over the hump. You figure
(17:45):
that he's got to put together at least two thousand
yards of all purpose offense. He's got to get close
to his touchdown output of a season ago. And it
just feels like in this day and age that it's
so difficult for any skilled position player to even be
considered above a co her back Now fifty to one,
it's not like you're taking a shot with one of
the co favorites up there. So if you're gonna put
a few bucks down and you think that ultimately this
(18:07):
Carolina offense with Teddy Bridgewater under the leadership with Joe Brady,
will give Christian adequate touches, then it makes sense. But
I'm just so reluctant to take any positional player outside
of the quarterback. Why why not? The love for Pat Mahomes, Well,
I think it's more about price, honestly, Doug. When you
look at Fox beat, he's priced a less than four
to one. This is a guy who doesn't compete against
(18:28):
the rest of the NFL. He competes against himself every
single season. And we saw his touchdown numbers regressed last
year a little bit. Of course, he missed two games.
We know that he has a ton of weapons around him,
and I think that's why Clyde Edwards Hilaire is the
front runner to be Rookie of the Year from an
offensive standpoint. But I just wonder if Mahomes goes out
there and he were to throw for let's call it,
(18:49):
five thousand yards and forty touchdowns, if he'll get compared
to a season way back in two thousand eighteen, and
ultimately to go, hey, look, this is about narrative, It's
about spin. We want to go in a different direction.
Just hard to back an m VP candidate at price
less than four to one. Top uh Todd Firman joining
US and Fox bet Live. It's Doug Gotlib show here
on Fox Sports Radio. UM, help me out with the
(19:11):
KNCI Chiefs tonight, what are the what are the numbers? Tonight?
As the Texans going a team? They led twenty four
nothing and then got curb stomped by really boat race
more Tony, what are the numbers? And tonight's in gims
the line and over under Yeah, number has held pretty
steady all off season from one these prices were first
put on the board. You look at Kansas City at
nine nine and a half point favorite total in this
(19:33):
game has come down and touch for a peak of
fifty five and a half to fifty three. Looks like
there could be a little bit of weather in the forecast,
about a thirty percent chance of rain at Arrowhead. And
when you dive into this game, I think the real
question you have to ask, can the Texans figure out
what they did wrong over three quarters and replicate how
they started that playoff game. I'm not a believer in
the Texans this year at all. I don't think Deshaun
(19:55):
Watton can possibly get better when you lose your most
reliable third down weapon in DeAndre how Pupkin when it's
third and six and third and seven, is he gonna
have that same report with Randall Cobb, with Kenny Stills,
and with Brandon Cooks out there. I look at the
Texans defensively in this secondary was an absolute disaster last season,
finishing towards the bottom of the barrel of the twenty
ninth ring pass defense. They allowed three plus passing yards
(20:17):
in six games. Only the Arizona Cardinals did that more frequently.
I really believe that Kansas City and raising their banner,
there will be no letdown tonight. And you know me
long enough that I don't advocate for lane more than
a touchdown often. Uh hit the way defending Super Bowl
champions have performed in Week one, five and one straight up,
four one and one against the spread the last six times,
with an average margin of victory of north and twelve points.
(20:39):
That's the voice of Todd Ferman Fox UH Fox bet
Live is the TV shower boy Clay Travis among others
on that show. What do you think about the Texans?
I think this is a team trying to figure out
its identity. I love the fact that they committed to
Deshaun Walton with that mega millions type deal, but you
look at some of the weaponry around him. Sure, you
(21:01):
have a little bit more depth and receiver now, but
you have no true number one. I think they're running
game is going to be a little bit of a
disaster as well, when you consider that Cliff Kingsbury avoided
running David Johnson at all last year. They get Kenyan
Drake and suddenly the Cardinals become one of the more
dynamic rushing attacks in the league. And I look at
this team defensively, linebacker position that's been devalued. But the
(21:23):
Houston Texans have gone against analytics. They have two guys
on their roster and Dak Cunningham and Bernardrick McKinney that
they've committed to. They can't cover running backs out of
the backfield. They're not good in their back seven. And
I think if you're talking about a team poised to
go for making the playoffs to struggling to win seven games,
the Houston Texans ultimately become the poster child for that
m So you're down in the text I was just
(21:43):
singing their praises. I think offensive line is pretty good.
Obviously their defense wasn't great. They do have Deshaun Watson,
and I'm with you, I'm not having a number one,
but that could be a that could be a good thing,
couldn't it for you know, so you don't steer down
one guy. Yeah, I think it helps a little bit.
But the real question, and you know, the guys that
they're lying on a gamer acres, whether it's Will Fuller
or Brandon Cook, either one of them is showing a
ton of durability. And I think if you take one
(22:05):
of those guys out of the mix, Randall Cobb is
a nice slot receiver as a third or fourth weapon.
And I just just don't have a ton of confidence
in Kenny still stepping uprising to the occasion because we
saw Will Fuller put up gaudy numbers opposite DeAndre Hockey.
But when you have a couple of guys that are
burners and not truly elite route runners, it's gonna put
a lot more pressure on Watson He's had to deal
with over his first couple of seasons. I'm currently conducting
(22:26):
a fantasy draft with my son we got thirty seconds.
Let me tell you who's available. Michael Thomas, Clyde, Clyde Edwards, Hilaire,
um Kenyan Drake, Nick Chubble. Let me see here, howpause,
let me see if there's any good quarterbacks available real quickly? Oh,
Lamar Jacksons, availab, I'm gonna Lamar Lamar Jackson, Pat Mahomes.
Who would you go? Uh? You know what, honestly, you're
you're got early in the draft that you can't go quarterback.
(22:47):
Now you gotta wait for Dac to be available in
the fourth round. I think you gotta go Michael Thomas
or Clyde Edwards, Hilaire here m I go? Oh uh okay,
I took law Jackson. That's what I wanted. That's what
I want to do. I'm trying. You're trying to do
both at once. It is really really hard. So uh,
that's that's that's what well that would do? I think
(23:08):
I may have taken Who did it take for me?
This is so hard? Okay anyway, um okay, So if
you if you look historic, the historic data is one
of the things that you guys in Vegas follow the most. Okay,
Kansas City should have gotten to the super Bowl two
years ago. Do get the Super Bowl and win, But
we've also seen the team that loses in the Super Bowl,
(23:29):
with the exception of the Patriots, really struggled the next year.
What does Vegas think about the Niners. Well, for as
far as odds to win the Super Bowl, you're talking
about the Niners, this third favorites, behind only the Chiefs
and Ravens. It's a number that I would stay away from,
like the plague, given the fact that this was a
team that had struggles moving to football consistently before they
got Emmanuel Sanders in the Fiddle of the year. They're
(23:51):
going to face a schedule of opposing run defenses that's
a lot stouter than what they did last year. And
when you look at the receiving corps early on, Deebo,
Samuel and in and I you already banged up. You know.
Jimmy Garoppolo, I think he can erase some of the
doubt given the way he played over the last nine
minutes in the Super Bowl, and be a better, more
dynamic downfield thrower. But I think the defense takes a
step back. And when I look top to bottom, I
(24:13):
don't think there's a division more competitive in the NFL
than the NFC West. I'd be more likely dugged about
the forty nine to miss the playoffs than I would
be to bet them to win the NFC MM to
miss the playoffs. Okay, so if they missed the playoffs,
are you you bigger on a lot of people are
big on Arizona? What about the Rams? You know, like
the Rams yesterday signed the biggest contract we've ever seen
(24:35):
to a cornerback. But you know so many people pointing out, like, look,
the quarterback is what holds him back? They change running backs? Um,
where where are you in the NFC West? In regards
to Arizona and the Rams? I think the Rams can
be better how than what a lot of people think.
They actually overachieved as far as better as we're concerned
last year. I know they finished with a winning record,
missed the playoffs, but they were ten five and one
(24:57):
against the number with Sean McVeigh. The biggest concern I
have for the Rams isn't what they're going to do
on an offensive side, although they wouldn't need a bona
fide number one running back to emerge. It's more some
of the losses defensively, and we can start with Wade
phillips Um basically leaving and you bring in a unproven
defensive coordinator, Brandon Staley to kind of take over. In
that regard, you lose a couple of guys in Nickel
(25:19):
Rogie Coleman is one of the more underrated slot corners,
Cory Littleton one of the best linebackers and coverage, while
Jalen Ramdy is the lead as a position and illustrated
by the contract. The Rams field that same way. I
just have more question about the defensive side of the
ball in a division that's got some high powered offenses
that can put up crooked numbers. I think the Rams
nine and seven is probably the ceiling for this team,
(25:40):
and I actually have them pegged second in the division
behind the Seattle Sea. All right, last thing, I know,
you gotta run Todd from in Fox Pet Fox Pet Live. Uh.
One pick against the line that you love Week one
in the NFL, Washington Redskins. I'm gonna take our sorry,
the Washington football team, I'm gonna take down plus the
six against Philadelphia. Philadelphia is offensive line extremely banged up.
(26:01):
You're moving Jason Peters from right tackle the left tackle
skill position players are not sure we're gonna see from
Miles Sanders, no al Sean Jeffrey New Jalen reagor. Defensively,
I wouldn't be shocked if Javon Hargrey their big offseason
edition didn't play. And I really believe Washington could be
point spread. Darling's behind the strength of their front seven.
So give me Washington plus the six to put a
scar into Philadelphias, all right. I actually like the Dolphins
(26:23):
their plus six and a half in New England. Patriots
decimated by departures for Covid, whole new quarterback, no home
field advantage, right, and the Dolphins team that beat them
at the end of last year, and you still have
Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback and they've improved their overall talent.
That'd be my pick, Todd, great stuff. Love love Fox
BET Live. Thanks so much for joining us. Always a
pleasure catching up dog enjoy the games this weekend. Be
(26:44):
sure to catch the live edition of The Doug gott
Leap Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific.
Also love having Brian Billick back with us NFL network analysts.
Of course, uh if you need shoulder pads. If your
kids are ex tech shoulder pads are the absolute best
Taylor made to your and uh you know, or to yourself,
you want them. Coach Billy joins us here in the
(27:04):
Doug Oatland Show on Fox Sports Radio. First game of
the year without preseason games. Here, here's two explosive offenses.
What do you expect tonight in Kansas City? Well, that
will be interesting to see, you know, whether whether obviously
without the preseason games that I actually think the lack
(27:25):
of preseason games, I think coaches actually kind of like it.
I think they've been able to drill down in a
more specific teaching frame um and and without the distraction
of a preseason game, particularly to veteran teams, established teams
like that. So I think they're okay with that. I
think the players will be physically ready to go. There'll
be some inequities obviously, and some things happening like you
(27:46):
do typically, even when we have the preseason games. Early on,
you see a lot of receivers running just free because
the communication on the back end breaks down. You know,
I've always said people were saying, okay, what's the head
offens or defense? Well, offensively even though there's more to orchestrate.
If you make a mistake, okay, you putt, but you
make a mistake defensively, and let's break out the band
(28:06):
and bring on the PhD team because and we will
see that at some point. I don't know if we
will the night, but certainly this weekend, guys running down
the field just naked free, no one even in the
frame because there's been a miscommunication or breakdown on the defense.
So we could see a little of that. But I
think physically, I think the players will will we'll pick
right up, and I think you could be pretty good. Um,
(28:27):
Brian billic our guests on the doug Atlive Show on
Fox Sports Tradeio, you are somebody who the depth of
your preparation and of your knowledge just incredible, incredible as
a coach, I mean unbelievable as a coach. Um, I'm
I'm wondering, I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the
job that we've seen Bill O'Brien do. People were very
(28:48):
critical of what he got in return, when you know,
when he's made some of these trades, especially for DeAndre Hopkins.
Now the dust is settled and he signed Laremy Tuns
when he signed Deshaun Watson and see what his decisions
are to put around Deshaun Watson. What are your thoughts
on the job that he's done. Well, we'll see, we'll
find out, because yeah, there have been a lot of changes,
(29:10):
and that's true of every team. Uh. And you don't
just lose it DeAndre Hopkins and go Okay, well we'll
just plug in the next man. They'll work that way.
They've got a capable receiving corps. I like the receiving corp.
There's a lot of versatility in it, which I always say,
I'd like my starting receiver corps to be like a
basketball team. You know, I don't I don't want all
point guards. I don't want all big men. They're not
(29:31):
a particularly big group, but they are do have speed,
and I think there's plenty of options for Deshaun Watson.
So yeah, I think they got a chance to be
pretty good. They're gonna want to run the ball obviously
as a part of it as well. Um And so yeah,
now how much of a loss and not having that
dominant one, we'll we'll we'll see what kind of effect
it has, and ultimately, yeah, Bill O'Brien is going to
(29:55):
be one accountable because he wears all the hats. Right now,
when you want the Super Bowl with the avn's people
forget that you guys had to tear it down because
of salary cap stuff. Right, Um, what are those challenges
like though the next year when you carry the banner
of being Super Bowl champs? You know, I always said,
people always said, well, it's so hard to repeat it's
a super Bowl champ. No, it's hard to win a
(30:17):
super Bowl period, whether you're repeating or not. I mean,
the things that have to happen in the order and
the and the schedule, and and they're aware of that.
Kansas City is an outstanding football team and they involved
more probably the cream of the crop when it comes
to the a f C. But I'm sure and they're
very confident. I mean, the best thing they got going
for him is, particularly during the playoffs, they got behind
(30:38):
in every game and it was okay, we can handle that.
So now they've got that confidence in that pedigree of
no matter what happens early in the game, it's okay,
you know, we don't have to pay it because we've
been here before. We know how this works. So uh yeah,
they're going to carry that into it, and I'm sure
Andy Reid is confidence they are and they're talking about
multiple Super Bowls. Okay, that's cool. But now with the
(30:59):
c IS starting, I'm sure we will channel his Bill Belichick. Okay,
it's all about Houston and then next week it's all
about whoever's up next. It's it's just gonna be all
we're gonna talk about is who we're playing this week.
The Arizona cart is a lot of people like what
they're doing. Uh. They seem to figure out, you know,
how to block for uh for for Murray by the
(31:21):
end of the year. They seem to figure out with
Kenyan Drake how to run the football by the by
the end of the year. I just I wonder though,
kind of in the opposite, you know, it's not that
people didn't take him seriously before, but now there's at
least a discussion about Arizona being a playoff caliber football team.
What are the challenges for year two with Cliff Kingsbury
(31:41):
now that people have a little bit better sense of
what they're gonna do on offense, Yeah, and just that
the progression of it, then with the expanded playoff field. Yeah,
I think, like I said, I think the NFC is
wide open now. They're in a very tough division with
San Francisco and Seattle is going to be better. You
gotta figure l A is going to be back. But
I'm interested see what Kyler Murray does. Yeah, DeAndre Hopkins,
that's gonna open up a lot of a lot of
(32:03):
opportunities for Fitzgerald and Kirk and and uh the question
for me is and I think Kyler Murray will step
up fine. To me, it's going to be more about
the Cliff Kings very often. Is this is this the
running shoot of the two thousands up and down between
the thirties but then bogs down when you get in
the red zone? Or could indeed they finished it off
in the NFL and have have that that kind of
(32:25):
scheme and personnel to get that done. So but yeah,
I think they could very much be a fact. Brian
billig Our guest in the Doug Outlive show here on
Fox Sports Radio. Cam Newton's gonna get to start for
the Patriots. There were questions about the talent around Tom
Brady last year. Haven't really added to the town, If
or not they've lost some of it, and then all
(32:46):
of a sudden, now the defense has guys that have
opted out because of COVID. What when when you see
the Patriots this year, grantit's on paper, we haven't seen
how healthy Cam is. But what's your impression of the
likelihood of being competitive at the top of the APEC East? Oh?
I think they'll be competitive for no other reason. You know,
buffaloes playing well, But we don't know how good New
York is gonna be really good, how Miami is gonna
(33:08):
be So just the divisions itself says it's going to
be competitive. We knew Cam Newt was going to be
the quarterback all along. They'll run the ball well. New England,
certainly with Josh McDaniel and Bill Belichick, they're gonna they
are nothing if not adaptive to whatever it is there
they want to do in a given week. No team
has ever been more fluid from one week to the
next than New England. But that was under Tom Brady
(33:31):
with all of you know, juliet Eelman, who's a phenomenal receiver.
They don't have a dominant one, uh and that's certainly
a factor. Now Cam Newton's kind of used to that
he's not really had that dominant one, uh Steve Smith
for a while. But outside of that. But but it's
a combination with oh and they're going through a lot
of changes on defense. As you brought up, that's that's
(33:52):
the double wamy because before when they've had to do that,
they at least could lean on a Tom Brady as
that anchor and we'll go through our normal transition likely
normally do well. They have both ends of it right now. Yeah,
this is this is going to test them. A coach,
I'm I'm intrigued by by Daniel Jones. Here's a guy
(34:13):
who a lot of people couldn't believe that the Giants
took him. Then he had this unbelievable preseason. Then by
the time you got to start, he played well, then
kind of came back to earth. They continue to build
a better offensive line, They obviously have a really talented
running back behind him. But you've now gotten a whole
chat chance to see everything and talk to people in
the league. What are your expectations for Daniel Jones year
(34:33):
two with the Giants. Yeah, we'll see. I think there's
a reasonable expectation that he will take that next step.
I think having Jason Garrett now as the offensive coordinator,
I think Sae Kwon Barkley could have a Zethel Elliott
type year, like a two thousand seventeen and eighteen. He'll
be three plus carries, maybe sixties seventy plus receptions, which
would be huge. Uh. And and and that they're going
(34:57):
to anchor it that way, so uh yeah, I think
they can be better. I think Dallas can be better.
I think the NFC East is maybe the most competitive
division top to bottom. Philadelphia ought to be good if
they stay healthy. They've got competigree, but we'll see. I
think Dallas will be better with Mike McCarthy there and
Mike Nolan is the defensive coordinator. Uh. And I think
the Giants with Jason Garrett pulling the trigger there and
(35:18):
kind of formulating that kind of offense. Yeah, I think
they'll be better. Are they better enough? I don't know.
We'll see. But you're right. If you can anchor around
say Kwon Barkley, that certainly makes it a lot easier
for Daniel Jones to grow. Kevin Stefancy is coming up
from the Vikings. Uh in similar fashion when you came
up from the Vikings to the Ravens. But we we
if if what we saw last year is his plan
(35:40):
for Cleveland this year, that means they're gonna run the
football a ton and then eventually use that to run
kind of play action to those talented wide receivers. I
don't think anyone doubts that Cleveland has talent. But is
Stefanski the right guy or maybe as Baker Mayfield the
right guy for this all to work together? More of
the latter. Can he can he you know, embrace what
(36:02):
they're doing um and and he's at that make or
break point. You know, he showed tremendous signs first half
of the first year or the second half of the
first year. Then last year kind of came back and
you know, that aggressive gun slinger, this is who I am. Mentality,
that's fine, but not when you're throwing one to one
touchdown interception ratio. You gotta be two to one or
(36:23):
that's not gonna cut it. So a good running game
will certainly help that. There are times he looked very
very good. It's gonna come down to that, is Baker
Mayfield really the guy? And we'll see Brian Billick our
guests here on the Doug Outlives show on Fox Sports Radio. Okay,
the Ravens Lamar was incredible. Like we we have this
(36:43):
tendency as fans to think what a guy is when
he comes in the league, that's what he is. And
Lamar struggled with accuracy at times in college, and then
he he was very good as a rookie when he
replaced Flacco mid year. He was the league's MVP last year.
And obviously, uh, there's still are were some shortcomings in
the playoffs, not all his fault, but some are when
(37:03):
he turns the football over. UM, I'm often wondering, you know,
Candle League catch up to him for this reason. They're
they're still very unique in terms of what they do,
and you don't necessarily, I don't think you change your
defense for one team, one opponent per year. What's your
best guess on what the Ravens look like against defenses?
(37:25):
To now have a little bit better sense of what
Greg romans trying to do, I think they look darn good.
The continuity of both the players and the coaching staff
carry over from last year and and the question is
can you continue to run Lamar Jacks as much as
they do? And I think that will be a work
in progress. I think that's the thing that has they've
been brilliant about is they're all in and it's not
(37:47):
a problem until it's a problem until he gets that hit.
But I think privately, if if if Greg Roman and
John Harball were to make that deal with the devil
of Okay, well, we'll take just what he can, just
do what he did last year, We'll take it just
like that in New York. Second, you're talking better than
twelve yards rushing, a hundred seventy carries, thirty six touchdown passes.
(38:09):
Um in their perfect world, would they maybe take you
forty fifth year those runs and make them passes to
not to expose him and can you get better throwing
at the numbers outside because that's where the turnovers came from,
that's where the incompletions were. Yeah, I think they would
take that. But I think they're gonna build on and
they're gonna be pretty darn good. They've had a lot
of changes defensively, so that's going to be a challenge
(38:31):
as well. But yeah, I think dam in Kansas City
are clearly the favorites in the ANFC coach Um ex
tax shoulder pads for people who don't know about this
brand of pass what makes them special. Well, I'm very
proud of where we are with that protect. In seven years,
we've become the number one pad in the NFL. You know,
players didn't used to know even what pads they had.
(38:53):
Now they're now they're asking and demanding for Extech pads.
George Kittle, Say Kwan Barkley, Aaron Donald, Roll and extect
pads as is Oklahoma, Auburn, Notre Dame, Ohio State. In
seven short years, we've become the dominant pad in the market.
You know, it's the x r D technology which has
patented into to the x Tech pads and the fact
that now they're basically handcrafted pads to fit the player
(39:14):
based on age, level of play, position, injury history, height, weight,
shoulder measurements. No other pad does that. It's hundred percent
American made, so there's been no supply chain issues whatsoever.
And uh, you know, with a number one pad in
the NFL, like we said, uh, tops in college and
and and now high school players available through x tech
pads dot com. These are the paths that are young
(39:35):
people ought to be in. Coach great stuff, enjoy the season.
Can't wait to have you on again. You just the
amount of knowledge coming from you is uh, you know,
beyond anything that anyone could ever desire. Thanks so much
for joining us. Sounds good.
