Speaker 1 (00:00):
Two naked guys running around talking gibberish, authentic frontier jibbery.
And yesterday and I got a heads up from Douglas
County Sheriff Aaron Hans and there have been a couple
of arrests made in connection with that case. And the
sheriff joins us this morning, Aaron, good morning, Good morning. Okay. Now,
so there's this outfit you describe as a storefront basically

(00:22):
very close to the Douglas County Sheriff's office up there,
one hundred and fifty six the maple called Green Star
Glass and Goodies. And you say they're selling stuff they
shouldn't be selling. Flash it out for us here.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Yeah, I actually can look at my office window Candy
Corner from the intersection, see see the front of the storefront. So,
just like you said, a little bit of background. On
Easter weekend, we had two separate cases out out and
unincorporated Douglas County where two adult males were found naked
running around, one in their neighborhood, one in their house.

(00:57):
His wife had called him in and they were they
were speaking gibbers, who were speaking in tongues. I mean,
they were just whacked out of their mind quite frankly.
And so in one case, one of the individuals tried
to disarm a deputy that could have ended up with
a very badly, very bad, deadly outcome, Thank god it did.

(01:17):
In the other case, the individual had to be hospitalized
and threatened to kill people in his neighborhood. And so
in both cases you know that that wasn't their intent
to do that. But both individuals advice. They had bought
products from local vape stores. One of those purchases led

(01:38):
us back to that Green Star Glass and goodies, and
it would appear that the goodies in that store are
illegal silicon hallucinogenic mushrooms, which are illegal both in the
federal and state level.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
Okay, and these were, as far as these two men knew,
purchase legally supposedly, right or do you think.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
They thought they they thought.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
They did, or do you think the word gets out
their word gets out? You can get the good stuff
here well.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
And as a matter of fact, this store was handing
out flyers. We have a copy of the flyer in
which they say introducing legal mushrooms. These mushrooms are completely legal.
They contain no psilocybin, no silicon. Well, that's a lie,

(02:32):
and these individuals thought they were purchasing something that was
safe and legal. But you know, this is a real
consumer protection issue because again, look, people make adult choices,
you know, I know everybody, there's some folks that like
to second guests. You know, if we're just trying to
harsh people's buzz, someone could have lost their life here
and someone was hospitalized here for days. And so we've

(02:53):
got to stand up for consumers and innocent people and
make sure we're enforcing the laws.

Speaker 1 (02:57):
So we know that one of these two that substance there,
what about the other one? Any idea?

Speaker 2 (03:03):
We're still investigating that. You know, I really think that
this is a glimpse behind the curtain. What I'm finding
is that this is just a dirty, dirty industry in general.
It seems like when you give this industry an inch,
they'll take ten miles. And what was really disgusting about
this storefront is they're not only selling Delta products, THHC products,
and they're selling these illegal mushroom products, but they also

(03:26):
sell candy and skateboards and skateboard apparels. And talking to
the businesses that share that strip Mall storefront, they say
that every day after high school letout. There's West View
High Schools just north of there one hundred and fifty six,
and they see high school kids coming and going. We've

(03:48):
actually received more tips from people that saw the story
saying I see kids in their buying. One lady got
ahold of us last night and said my son bought
the same thing and he had a terrible reaction to it.
So this investigation is going to continue.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
What will be the next step with the two defenders,
Ryan McCollum and Ross Plumb And if they are convicted,
what will their penalty or what could their penalty be.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Well, they're facing a class two felony, a Class two
felony that's for possession with intent to distribute a controlled
substance and that is a minimum of one year in
prison a maximum of fifty and obviously they will be
entitled to due process going through the criminal justice system.
But we're not going to stop here. The tips are

(04:34):
rolling in. We're finding more of these babe shops that
are selling products. We work very closely with un MC
and our partners in the Omah Police Department and in
the DEA and the US Attorney's Office in the AG's office.
We're going to focus in on these businesses, and we're
going to take appropriate enforcement action when we can, because again,

(04:56):
look at people are like, oh, we but if we
tax this product, we could make the tax money from it. Okay, great?
How much did it cost this individual to be in
the hospital for two three days and he was delirious
almost the entire time. And how much would it cost
if if a wife would have lost her husband that
day because he ingested something he thought was safe and

(05:17):
legal and in fact it was poisoned in the schedule
won their cut?

Speaker 1 (05:20):
Well, you know the other thing is you see these
vape shops and these can have it all products marketed
in these stores all over town. What's the effort? I mean,
you can't possibly check them all all the time. So
what is the answer if you want if you want
to enforce this and avoid somebody getting a hold of
something that might kill him.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Well, I think I think the state government and the
federal governments are going to have to look at it extreme, uh,
you know, investing in regulating these businesses. I'll give you
an example in the case of this this latest vape shop,
all this product came direct from California. Yeah, okay, directly
from California, no testing. When it arrived here locally, no

(06:04):
one knew what was in it. And so look, if
we want to have these businesses and make them accessible
to the public, we're going to have to talk about
investing in some extreme regulation or we're going to have
to really focus on the enforcement piece. Because we've already
have enough traffic fatalities in this county. We had a
record traffic fatality account last year. Can you imagine as

(06:28):
these magic mushrooms start to really hit the market, if
they do what our traffic fatality rates could explode? You
not to mention our violent crime rates and behavioral health challenges.

Speaker 1 (06:39):
Indeed, Sheriff, thanks, I always good to have you on.
Thanks Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson here on kfab's morning
