Speaker 1 (00:00):
Pleasure to welcome Omaha Police Deputy Chiefs three Steve servant
in the program, Steve, good morning, Thank you, good morning
for your time. Are I hear you're going to the
airport authority?

Speaker 2 (00:09):
I am.

Speaker 3 (00:09):
I am happy for many years, nearly twenty seven nearly
twenty seven years. Last week will be my last, my
last day. Well we have, uh, congratulations on them. What
I assume you will be a successful move. I think
I wish we had happier news to talk about. But man,
this shock the community over the weekend, a murder, suicide
and a parking lot of stokes out in West Omahan.

(00:30):
And it turns out we find out we knew that
we're young people and the police believed that the guy
shot the girl and then shot himself, and then the
identities released yesterday young girl familiar North.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Hi.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
What can you tell us about the investigation regarding what
was happening here? What what led up to this?

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Well?

Speaker 3 (00:51):
Again, thank you for having me you first of all
or or serious heartfilled condolences go out to the family,
friends and loved one of Zara Sebinski, interest and Donner,
the two young individuals involved in this horrifically tragic incident.
This was this was an intentional act and you know,

(01:12):
there's there's no danger to the public other than we
see this occurring as a result of of a domestic relationship,
a partnership. They had dated, They had dated for quite
some time. They had dated and recently fairly recently had

(01:32):
had broken up. Zara had put an end to the relationship,
and uh, we believe that she she began dating another
individual and the suspect intentionally sought her out at her
place of employment and was waiting for her in the

(01:53):
parking lot. She worked there, She did, She did work
there at Stokes. She was a hostess, I believe, and
was working the shift there Friday evening. The suspect had
gone to the parking lot there on West Dodge and
was was, we believe it was waiting for her to

(02:16):
toward the end of her shift and when that, when
that occurred, he approached her and tragically shot her and
then turned the gun on himself.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Apparently persuaded her to get in the car. And or
was there was that her car? Do we know she was?
She was in in her car, her car, she was
and so she was in the drivers she was was Lord, well,
you know, we speculate when you hear something like this
that was probably a dating or relationship with some kind
but good heavens, it was what do we know about

(02:47):
this young man?

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Well?

Speaker 3 (02:49):
There, you know, our investigators are doing deep dives, as
they always do. Our homicide investigative Unit is conducting the
the investigation in this case, and they'll do a very
thorough comprehensive review and and and dig deep into both
individuals histories.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
He had Wow, it was from the area. He'd lived
with some other family members outside.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Of Omaha and then had moved back to the area
before they had started dating.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
It just hurts. It hurts everybody this, it does.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
I don't know. I don't know. You're a father, I am.
I am too, Rosie, I don't know that I. The
parents were able to relase the very heartfelt statement and
classing statement that they I don't know I by cut yeah,
you know.

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah, it's tragic. I mean, it's it's something that no
parent ever wants to deal with for sure. UH and
it strikes to the heart of everyone in the community.
Two young people with you know, their lives, full lives
ahead of them and and UH ended tragically, way too soon.
You know, we see this happen a lot intotic situations.

(04:02):
Oftentimes they end or can end in very violent, tragic manners.
So it's just it's a reminder to be aware. If
you're not comfortable about something or something's wrong, do everything
you can to get out of a situation or stay
away from a situation that could turn violent or tragic.
H Listen, Listen to your loved ones, Listen to your kids,

(04:25):
be involved in their lives, know what's going on as
best you can.

Speaker 1 (04:28):
Will there be will there Steve, Will there be more
specifics released as investigation on Folles relative that there will
be how I was done exactly?

Speaker 3 (04:38):
There will be, Yes, there will. These are homicide investigators.
They are experts at what they do, and they conduct
deep dives and they find out a lot of the
details because we want to know. Everyone wants to know
what exactly happened, or try to figure out as best
we can what happened and try to prevent these things
from occurring in the future as well.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Anybody who's been through at any point in their life
a bad breakup understands that you go little goofy along
the way. But but then you hear these cases like
this one and domestic murders that pop up in the
news where they just completely lose.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Yeah, yeah, it's very true.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
You know, there's we're looking into the aspect there could
be some behavior health elements involved in this. And again
also you know, any gun owner, we just want to
remind any and every gun owner to be as responsible
as possible. Always know about where your firearms are having
controlled and bucked up, prevent access as best you can.

(05:32):
And you know, hindsight is always twenty twenty. We look
at all the cues that we could have possibly prevented
something like this, but it's hard to do if someone
is intentional on committing.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
What you want.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
You wonder and maybe her family knows, but you wonder
if she if she was concerned about something like this happening.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
But what do you do? I mean, he hasn't committed
a crime. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 4 (05:54):
In a society that values freedom and individual personal liberties,
this is a hard one. The police respect responsibility is tall.
You know, I can't prevent something from happening unless there
is a legal avenue to do so, and in our country,
you can own a firearm. I still believe that parents
of a minor person still must bear responsibility for the

(06:17):
behavior of their kids. And if there are weapons in
the house and those weapons are not you know, impossible
to get to Mount Kilimanjaro, that's got to be to
some degree. I think the responsibility of the parents, well
he was his parents weren't here right back here from yeah,
there are these circumstances are a little bit different from that,

(06:38):
but it's it's a hard one.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
Man.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
This was a relatives gun. It was a relative firearm,
and so we just again we want to remind everyone
to be as careful and cautious and protective of firearms
as you can be. Absolutely, try to prevent access. And again,
hindsight is always twenty twenty. It is difficult to prevent
something like this. Someone is intentional on committing an act

(07:01):
like this, a tragedy.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
Deputy Chief seremony, before you run, I want to put
you on the spot here, but do you believe this
Chief Smater Sheriff Handsome Flat will be will be resolved
in a positive way for the community, because that's what's important.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Absolutely, we have two leaders from the community that worked
in this community a long time, and there's a long
history of collaborative efforts uh, successful efforts. You know, just
open communication and collaboration is the key, and I think
this will be resolved and move forward into positive man.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Thanks for coming in. I really appreciate it. Thank you
for having me. I actually my flight is delayed. I'll
contact you.

Speaker 4 (07:38):
I'm gonna do everything I can to help you. You
got to do something about those guys driving those vans.
You know they packed those vans looking for bigger tips. Meanwhile,
I miss my flight.
