Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Weekend Sport podcast with Jason Vine
from New Stalks EDB. They say you can't beat it
on a good day, but a storm is brewing in
the Capitol. The Springbok fans have arrived in force, loud, proud.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
And draped in green and gold.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
But this is All Blacks territory and tonight the Black
Wave will rise. Two rugby superpowers, one historic rivalry. But
before we hit the sky Stadium and braced for All
blacksby South Africa, we're live on Wellington's waterfront where the
passion is flowing at Shared twenty two, unpacking the analysis,

(00:48):
the emotion and the build up.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
It's Weekend Sport.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
With Jason Vine on your home of sport, New Stalks EDB.

Speaker 3 (00:57):
Yes today you're to get afternoon Welcome into Weekend Sport
on News Talks Edbay. Saturday, September thirteen. We're hit till
three at Shed twenty two on Wellington's water Run, soaking
up all the pregame atmosphere ahead of the Rugby Championship
Test between the All Blacks and the spring Box at
sky Stadium tonight, kickoff at five past seven. Over the
next couple of hours, we'll break it down. Former South
African coach heineke Meier's on the show today. Rugby World

(01:19):
Cup winning All Black Corey Jane Gonna pop an after one.
Former Springbok and now TV rugby analyst with Supersport, Hanyanni
Shimangi gives us his views. We'll talk warriors and black
ferns as well and take lots of your calls, and
also get the views of some of the fans who
are packing in here to SHD twenty two, many of
them actually in springbox gear.

Speaker 4 (01:39):
It has to be set. We'll get their view but
later on as well.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
But what a delight to open the show with another
Rugby World Cup winner, thirteen test former All Black swinger
twenty fifteen World Cup winner six tries in the tournament,
including one in the final against Australia near him Ilness Gudder.

Speaker 5 (01:54):
Great to see you, mate, Cheers very na, thanks for
having me. Just listening to the boys you got lined
up coming on after me. I guess I won't set
the bar two too high for them, but no, I'm
sure they'll roll in and get some good But it's
awesome to be here. It's yeah, a lot of Springbok jerseys.
I've just seen my mate toes before, did a bit
of a wander through town early doors. My daughter loves

(02:16):
getting on the cable car, so I thought I will
get out there bright and early to miss all the
Russian I thought I was, you know, and Joe Bug
or something with all the green and gold jerseys on
the cable car and rolling around Lenton. So it's awesome,
buzz yeah, really excited for tonight and here it's going
to be a good one.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
Yeah test match in the city. It's great, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
You can soak up the day and ride the cable
car see some fans.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
Now you're involved in coaching at the moment.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
In fact, the reason we had you leading off was
because of your star power obviously, but also because you've
got to get out to Kilbernie to coach the Pornikee
under eighty five. So you're in the quarterfinals with the
national comp. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (02:53):
So Pornakee boys have been going alright, had a couple
of wins in the first rounds of this eighty five
knockout comp. So we've got new Plumouth old boys at
Kilbernie Park. So while you're listening if you're not too
much in the next sort of forty five minutes, keep.

Speaker 6 (03:08):
The radio going.

Speaker 5 (03:09):
But in terms of viewing things, you come down skillburn
there and watch our boys have run around. Yeah, they
trend pretty well this week and obviously at this knockout
stage anything can happen. So yeah, really pumped for that
and probably set the tone hopefully for a few good
results coming forward later on over the next twelve hours,
then eighty.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
Five kilogram division some kind of growing, hasn't it, And
we saw a new Zealand team go to Sri Lanka.
I think it was earlier this year. The national comps
really exciting. I think the final the curtain raiser to
the bleacht like Cup game in Auckland in a couple
of weeks.

Speaker 4 (03:39):
What sort of rugby is it there?

Speaker 3 (03:41):
Do you find that there are a least big hit,
some more silky back line moves or is there still
some physicality involved.

Speaker 5 (03:47):
I think it's a nice mix of both, Like you'd
probably think, you know, if you're if you're the lighter
weight players running around and it has some pretty expensive rugby.
I know, probably my own bias way of wanting to
player I try and encourage the boys to push passes
and express themselves. But I guess it's interesting one and product.

(04:07):
What I didn't appreciate was around the set piece. So
when you've got you know, under eighty five kg players
packing down into scrums, it's almost like the older bit,
more experienced guys that know the technique and know how
to pack down and you can't kind of put you know,
a back that's sort of been playing Crimson into the
front run and put them into the deep end. So yeah,

(04:31):
sort of kids for everyone. If there's guys that you know,
hoe in around the set piece, you know they they're
pretty handy assets as well as yeah, guys that can
fling the ball around and use them at a piece
out wide.

Speaker 3 (04:42):
All right, Well, all the best of this afternoon. We'll
be looking at for that result in a couple of hours.
All Black South Africa famous rivalry normally pretty tight apart
from Albany twenty seventeen All Blacks fifty seven South Africa.

Speaker 7 (04:56):
Nil.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
You were part of that team. Couple of tries for
you that night? What went so well for the All
Blacks that night at Albany?

Speaker 5 (05:05):
Yeah, it feels like a few games go now when
you talk about results, and just I guess how South
Africa had been in it over the past few years.
Obviously you know back to backbor Cut winning champs, but
I think reflecting back to twenty seventeen, it almost felt
like one of those games everything just clicked in our
physicality and I've heard that sort of touched on in

(05:27):
the media this week from some of the All Blacks
and All Blacks camp around getting that physicality right and
so yeah, that like in terms of winning collisions, dominating
each sort of ball carry, tackles, the bounce of the ball,
we sort of played at a pace where maybe we
took them by surprise. So we really I think that's

(05:48):
a couple of tries We've got kind of a full
length one.

Speaker 8 (05:50):
I think Brody.

Speaker 5 (05:51):
Brittallic ran in a counter attack off Reex's break, So
it's almost like the boys were just up with the
intensity and then we just matched it through you know,
our collisions, skill execution. Yeah, one of those games where
things just came off. Yeah, that was probably a good
game to be a part of.

Speaker 3 (06:10):
I enjoyed it, yeah, bet Bet, and you kept going
as well, because it wasn't as though it was forty
a half time. I was thirty one or something, so
equal points in both halves, and the bench came on that.
Cody Taylor got the last try off the bench. The
iconic try though, your first one. When you've intercepted it,
you're off fifty meter run bodies there, you give it
to him and then he's given that little flick pass
behind him back to you and you're running for the try.

(06:32):
What pictures are you seeing in moments like that? Is
it really just instinctive when you're playing alongside a guy
like that and everything's just in sync.

Speaker 9 (06:40):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (06:40):
I think even sort of prior to that, in that
defensive line, I think I was defending in outside Sonny
Bill and knowing that he likes to get up and
put pressure on the defensive sorry on the attacking players,
and I think I might have been one of their
loose forwards, so I kind of just pictured or anticipated
that he wouldn't be able to throw like a big
cutout pass, and I'd get into that space and that

(07:02):
next attack outside of him, Yeah, picked it off, got
run down.

Speaker 10 (07:08):
Why.

Speaker 5 (07:08):
I think it was Skokasar, one of the wingers who's
absolutely rapid saw body out the right on my right side,
and I thought give it to him, he'll he'll.

Speaker 11 (07:15):
Run it in from here.

Speaker 5 (07:17):
And I've kind of probably made me feel a little
bit better the fact that not only did I get
run down, bear's got got chased down as well. And
there was just one of those moments I'm see body
coming back in. Yeah, just quite instinctive, all reactive to going, Oh,
he could probably flick one out here and then he
just lets it go out the right hand, out the back,

(07:38):
and then he was a bit easier running than in
twenty meters as opposed to I think an eighty odd
where where the run first started.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
Yeah, brilliance of another one in the second half out wide.
A lot of talk this week about about the aerial
battle high kicks. What was your strategy for dealing with
high kicks as a defender?

Speaker 5 (07:57):
First of all, Ah, as much as I've planned and trained,
that probably wasn't my my wrong area. Even just thinking
back to the game and the semi final at the
World Cup we played South Africa. Brian Habana was my
opposing winger and he just had a sukefield day. I

(08:18):
think it was the prayer was the nine and they
just kept peppering me with with box kinks. I think
the strategy was to just swap, just go now you're out,
Chuck Bender. Ben Smith moved moved to the right wing
to cover Scutter's sort of lack of and in his
aerial game. But just yeah, seeing as how much of
a weapon is in today's game, just thinking of South

(08:41):
Africa's sort of technics over the last few years and
that sort of came into play last week. Ethan Hooker
their their winger. He's a big unit, so I think
that will be a good test, you know, him and
Will Jordan or testing Damion and body at the back
putting at appreciated their Cheslin Kolby he's probably run a
similar size to me, but he's one of the bravest,

(09:04):
you know, toughest wingers going around. And here Heat backs
himself in the air too, So yeah, there'll be a
good area, good challenge I think on both teams and how.

Speaker 3 (09:13):
They use their aero game.

Speaker 12 (09:14):
Tonight.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
You only dayboot for the All Blacks a month before
the twenty fifteen Rugby World Cup two tries on Daboo.
By the way, similar in twenty nineteen, George Bridge and
sever reached the starting wingers at the back end of
that tournament that only daybooed in the year before the tournament.
How much of that wing spot is about kind of
being the hot hand in the year or so before
a World Cup.

Speaker 5 (09:37):
Yeah, I think a lot of it comes down to form,
I guess, and you look through form over the Super
Rugby season and I think for me personally being in
those outside back or wingers, a lot of it's about
confidence and just backing yourself and you kind of don't
you can't afford to sort of second guess or you know,

(09:57):
sort of be very bit doubtful about what your decisions are.

Speaker 11 (10:00):
And so I guess if.

Speaker 5 (10:02):
People are bringing that confidence in that form from Super Ragby,
that sort of just net surely he translates into the
All Blacks if not goes to another level, which which
is usually the case. A Yeah, segueing into Bonfa and
Leory Carter, I think he's probably been one of the
form wingers over the last couple of years. So yeah,
pump to see to see him go tonight. I remember

(10:24):
him coming into the Hurricanes as sort of a wider
training group plan. He was, Oh, he was unreal, just
the seventh background. I think he'd gone or been involved
with the New Zealand sevens team probably coming in with
us strong physical but someone that backs him stuff and
you had to do that in seven so I'm I'm
sure he'll do that tonight, and yeah, make the most

(10:45):
of that opportunity, all.

Speaker 3 (10:46):
Right, you got to go to be a coach in
a minute. But you reckon they'll win again tonight, AB.

Speaker 5 (10:50):
One hundred percent. Yeah, Yeah, I'm hoping. Yeah, I know
that I'll win. I just hope it's a good game.
Like looking at obviously I won't come in too much
on the forwards, but both back lines are pretty exciting
South Africa. I think, Yeah, russis named I think maybe
sixth or quite a few changes to that back line,
and with audue respect to the Crells and Thelende's and Pollards,
like the class players who you know you just look

(11:13):
at their rakb CV and what they've achieved. It's almost
like seeing how this new group with Sasha and Moody
Dami influence there.

Speaker 12 (11:21):
Twelve.

Speaker 5 (11:21):
He's at a time I love watching him, So yeah'd
be awesome game. I know that AB's will win. I
just wanted to sort of one of those exciting chuck
the ball around obviously not too many mistakes were people
are executing their skills but putting their talent on the space.

Speaker 3 (11:36):
Good Man, he great to see you make great to
catch up. I feel like we could talk for hours,
but as I say, you got to get to Kilbernie Park.

Speaker 4 (11:41):
Will look forward to the result in a few hours.

Speaker 6 (11:43):
Mate.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
But thanks for stopping and.

Speaker 11 (11:44):
I appreciate it.

Speaker 10 (11:45):
Grey, thanks for having me.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
It's near here. Milner Scatter joining us to lead us
off today from Shed twenty two in or Wellington. It
is coming up nineteen minutes past mid day.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
We're back in a second.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
By from Shed twenty two in Wellington.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
It's Weekend Sport with Jason Pine and GJ. Gardner Holmes,
New zealand'sposed trusted home builder News Talks.

Speaker 3 (12:07):
News Talks have been in Weekend Sport twelve twenty two,
coming to you live from Shed twenty two in Wellington
today head of this test match tonight at Sky Stadium.
See the beauty of broadcast days like this is that
people who you normally only get the chance to talk
to on the phone actually take the time and the
effort to come down and say gooday now. Regular listeners
to the show will have enjoyed the contributions of Shankxy

(12:33):
on the phone.

Speaker 4 (12:33):
Usually great to meet you mate, How are you good?

Speaker 6 (12:36):
Thanks mate?

Speaker 13 (12:36):
Yeah, yeah, this is an absolute pleasure to jump on
the first time jumping on live in any type of
broadcast like this.

Speaker 6 (12:43):
Yes, so fantastic.

Speaker 4 (12:45):
Always enjoy your contributions.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Like I said, I'm not you probably might know this,
but we have a phone system where the names of
people flash up. Some names we ignore. We never ignore you.
I always say to any of my producer, Shanks, he's
calling me, better get his views. How are you feeling
about tonight off the back of last week when I
think there was so much preacher on the All.

Speaker 4 (13:01):
Blacks last week? How do you think tonight will go?

Speaker 14 (13:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 13 (13:06):
One, I mean look, I think they obviously, you know
they were able to use that sort of Eden Park
who do to get a bit of a bit of
momentum back and a bit of a monkey off their
back in terms of those four rows four losses in
a row with the Springboks obviously and now now yeah
back down here where they kind of need to sort
out another little who do don't they with and when
they kind of did last year? But South Africa have

(13:27):
had the wood on us down in Wellington. Men, we've
had so that record. We need to we need to
up a bit. But I think they're going to come
out with a good performance. I'm really interested to see
how that young South African team goes. Like everyone like
just a lot of use and excitement. So I think
it's going to be great. Hopefully where this stays stays good.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
Yeah, I'm actually looking forward as well. And we'll talk
about this afternoon. Seeing Leroy Carter. I think there's been
a bit of a clamor for his inclusion. He's only
a really wider training group. But Emann another was injury Rica,
you only had a few goes. What are you what
are you hoping expecting to see from from Leroy Carter's
this evening?

Speaker 13 (14:01):
Oh look, I mean I really hope you obviously a
young guy on debut, that he is going to get
a bit of an aerial bombardment.

Speaker 11 (14:08):
You just love to see him come.

Speaker 13 (14:09):
Through that well and be able to, yeah, get some
ball and space and and hopefully they're able to play
a bit more expensive. I mean, you'd expect that for
the style of the team that the Springboks have chosen.
And yeah, just just obviously hope that he can, you know,
try on David would be lovely for him.

Speaker 11 (14:26):
Ive been a massive friend.

Speaker 13 (14:27):
Through through Super Rugby and so I think a lot
of people have been calling him for him to get
a run.

Speaker 11 (14:31):
So yeah for the thought to.

Speaker 4 (14:32):
It, and I didn't realize that.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
Maybe I did realize it obviously nearhim Millner Scutter, we
just had on as coaching the pornicky underady fives has
also got a coaching roll out of pornicky. You're a
pornicky man as well.

Speaker 13 (14:43):
Yeah, so I'm the on the chair at the club
and so having someone like Nere he's just been amazing
just to probably just to get to know him as
a mate really because he has such a such a
good fella and.

Speaker 3 (14:55):
Just even listening to him break down the game tonight. Man,
he's got he's got some smarts.

Speaker 15 (15:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 13 (15:00):
So he's been a real asset for us.

Speaker 16 (15:02):
He loves it.

Speaker 13 (15:03):
He gets involved from on our little nursery perniky pup's
grade right through the juniors up into the premier team
and he's still you know, down here chipping away with
our eighty five's while he's doing is with Wellington. So yeah, yeah,
and then last night we had the dinner. We had
a couple of the guests I think that you've got on.
We had Shimmy. We also had Matt Pearce, all arranged

(15:27):
through our great Nisbo who's a made of yours obviously,
So yeah, a couple of really good assets. So we're
really lucky with that.

Speaker 11 (15:36):
And so now just.

Speaker 13 (15:37):
Looking for a great, great afternoon of footy now and
then carrying on into the game.

Speaker 3 (15:40):
Brilliant and you're your fan here three got your three
three daughters and.

Speaker 4 (15:45):
The extremely well behaved. I have to say, well they
went like.

Speaker 13 (15:49):
That earlier this morning. We were a tearing our here out.
But mate, yeah, no, they are a rugby nerd like me.
Listen to the radio a lot of the time hearing
you every Saturday Sunday afternoon. You're up there with Taylor
Swift and in terms of what they hear on the radio, mate,
so yeah, yeah, you're a bit of a celebrity they
found I'll be showing up. But they were a bit
starstruck when we said we're going in to see Piney amazing.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
Well, I'm sure when they meet Taylor Swift I will
be long for gotten. Shecks is good to see you mate,
thanks for stopping and this was unexpected.

Speaker 4 (16:19):
You just came to say hi and I chucked you
on the mic. But good to see you, mate.

Speaker 3 (16:21):
I hope, I hope the day goes well and well
first of all, ponikee when the under eighty five quarter
and the game goes well tonight, make good to see you.

Speaker 13 (16:28):
No absolute pleaser, Piney, thank you very much.

Speaker 4 (16:30):
No, thank you for stopping and mate, there you go.
That's how we do it.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
If you want to pop in you're in the Wellington region.
We're here at Shed twenty two on Wellington's waterfront until
at three o'clock this afternoon. Corey Jane's our guest after one.
Can't wait to ask him about the aerial battle nehim
on the scudder was saying earlier that he was never
really that great under the high ball, and look, look,
I think he probably under sells himself a bit, but
one of the best under the high ball, Corey Jane.

(16:55):
So what are the techniques and the strategies to use
when you're getting that aerial bombardment? Also wort to find
out from Corey what is the story with the box kick,
because so many of our listeners have said you know why,
why do teams box kick? What is the point of it?
What is the tactic? What is the strategy? So Corey
Jane can answer those questions. Our lines are open though,

(17:16):
oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty. Let's talk a bit
about this game tonight, anything at all that that jumps
out at you. I've got a couple of thoughts about it.
But lines are open now, oh eight hundred eighty ten eighty.
Heineken Maia going to join us before one o'clock, but
keen to take a few calls now on this game.
You don't have to be in the Wellington region. You
can be in the Wellington region if you like. You

(17:36):
can be anywhere at all, but happy to take your
call seea Shanksy happy to take your call on eight
hundred eighty ten eighty nine two ninety two. If you
would prefer to send a text just on the Warriors.
We will touch on the Warriors after two o'clock this afternoon.
We haven't forgotten about the other big game tonight, go
Media Stadium, Warriors v Panthers in Week one of the

(17:57):
NRL Finals.

Speaker 4 (17:58):
Don't worry, we haven't forgot about that.

Speaker 3 (17:59):
Rich Agar, assistant coach of the team going to join
us after two, and we can take some calls on
that as well. But as far as this of the
show is concerned, it's rugby. We want to talk. So
what do you make of the changes? In particular, Leroy
Carter is a really interesting proposition for me. He's long
been regarded, well, that's probably wrong. He has this year

(18:21):
been regarded as one of the form wingers in the competition.

Speaker 4 (18:25):
They talk about his pace.

Speaker 3 (18:26):
They talk about how quick he is when it comes
to you know, obviously both on offense and defense as well,
if those are the right phrases to use for a
rugby game. So quick, they talk about his quickness over
forty meters and then once it gets ahead of steam up,
then you ain't stopping the guy. He wasn't in the

(18:47):
initial All Black squad. He was called in for the
Argentina trip as injury cover and was still outside the
actual squad. But IMMANI narded we're getting the rib injury
last week very early on. I mean, his his loss
is Leroy Carter's gain, really, and you have to there
to take these opportunities. And I look at others like

(19:12):
Kyle Preston, for example, Kyle Preston was the fifth choice half.

Speaker 4 (19:18):
Back at the start of the year.

Speaker 3 (19:20):
I think it's fair to say, and here he was
last weekend at Eden Park, running out in the biggest
test match outside of a World Cup for years and
giving a pretty good account of himself. When it comes
to those wing positions, it really is the hot hand
going into World Cups. You fast forward two years and
it's quite difficult to imagine Severe Reese going to the

(19:43):
next World Cup. It doesn't feel likely, does it. And
you talk about I talked to nehiml a scutter. He
debuted a month before that. Twenty fifteen Rugby World Cup
went over there, six tries in the tournament, one of
the stars of the tournament and a Rugby World Cup winner,
including a try in the final. And ahead of twenty nineteen,

(20:05):
it was sever Reese and George Bridge then who came
in and took those wing spots. It is the hot
hand at the time. Look Rico Jouanni, I'm sure we'll
still be a big part of the All Blacks in
the next couple of years, but you just wonder what
his role to play will be as we move forward.
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten, eighty ninety two, ninety two,

(20:26):
if you would like to correspond via text or face
to face, sheared twenty two on Wellington's waterfront.

Speaker 17 (20:32):
Hello, Phil, I get a piney.

Speaker 12 (20:35):
How are you very good?

Speaker 3 (20:37):
Thank you?

Speaker 18 (20:37):
Phil?

Speaker 15 (20:38):
I can't make it face to face there down in Wellington,
and she had twenty two. I'm still in christ Rich here.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
Well, look, I'm more than happy to take your call
on the phone. Phil. What are you thinking about tonight?

Speaker 15 (20:51):
Well, it's going to be interesting. Just before I get
into that, it's interesting with Jannie, Like you say, what's
going to happen with his future? How they've been sort
of marked I was going to say marking around with him,
but how they've been kind of putting them here and
then putting them there and there. Now he's out, So yeah,
it's going to be interesting to see what happens here.
I'm looking forward to seeing this guy Carter go on

(21:15):
the wing because they reckon. He's the fastest man around
in New Zealand at the moment, so looking forward to
seeing his speed and just how he goes. I don't
I think he's not that under the high but I'm
not sure though. But that's another good thing that the
box I'm looking forward to you saying getting Corey Jana
on to have a talk about the box kicking, because

(21:36):
I'm in the camp that I just don't like the
box kick at all. And remember last weekend when I
was listening to them talking afterwards, was on the Breakdown
about Justin Marshall saying that he was kind of concerned
about a couple that areas too where and he's a halfback.

(21:56):
We're about thirty meters out from their line. And Christy,
who I think had a great game last week, was
one of the players. They had a great game, But
a couple of times done that box kick about thirty
out when you'd be thinking it's a fifty to fifty
yet a back, surely you'd be better to keep it
in hand and get it out amongst the backs, as
they say, as the old Clark George Clark, I was
the guy who made that Fred Dak songs that haven't forgot.

Speaker 3 (22:18):
So yeah, feed the backs, Yeah, feed the backs indeed. Yeah,
And yeah, I think we've talked about it a lot
on the show. You and I have a lot of
other listeners that have wondered about the tactic and why
it's used, I mean, it must be considered effective. Well,
otherwise they wouldn't do it. You think last week there
were I think there were seventy kicks in play last week,

(22:40):
and that isn't just box kicks, but kicks and play
during that game last week. But I would calculate that
probably thirty to forty would have been box kicks.

Speaker 4 (22:49):
That's a heck of a lot of box kicking.

Speaker 3 (22:51):
So it's clearly a strategy which must have some some
method or some idea behind why they do it. Otherwise
they wouldn't do it.

Speaker 19 (23:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 15 (23:00):
Yeah, well that's part of the big mystery for me.
In that twote, It'll be interesting to hear what Corey
James says because I'm thinking, like you've just said, they
persist with it so much, and the coaches seem to
be happy for them to persist with it as well.
There must be some real benefit they see from But
I'd like to explain to me, you know, it was
a bit of a lame and not being an expert

(23:21):
on the old strategy of it all, but yeah, there
must be something with it because they stick with it.
But I'm looking that game last week, there was so
many great performs and then oddly enough, the ironic thing
is we did do well with the aerial game in
the box kicking last week, and a lot better than
we have one bit.

Speaker 3 (23:40):
Yeah better, yeah better, I think better.

Speaker 4 (23:42):
Yeah it was, it was better.

Speaker 3 (23:45):
It wasn't still I don't think it was anywhere there
where they wanted it to be filled. But it was
definitely better. And let's see how they go tonight. Hey,
good to chat to you mate. Better move. Oh eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty is our number. Heinnek am
I going to be on the show in the next
little while as well. He was All Black's coach, not
All Blacks coach, Spreebots coach between twenty twelve and twenty fifteen.
He guided South Africa to the twenty fifteen Rugby World Cup,

(24:08):
where of course they came up against the All Blacks
and the semi final, going down narrowly twenty points to eighteen.
I wonder if that still sort of sticks in his
crawl a little, but that was his last game as
as spring Box coach in that three year tenure. Always
been a very astute observer of the game, heineke Meyer.
After one o'clock Corey Jane, but plenty of time for
your calls, oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty ninety

(24:31):
two ninety two. If you would prefer to send a text,
We'll try and get a couple of South African fans
who have gathered here as well to have a yarn
to us on site too. But lines are open. Spere
one there if you want to jump on. It's twenty
six away from one on Weekend Sport.

Speaker 1 (24:46):
Counting down to All Blacks v South Africa on your
home of Sport. It's Weekend Sports lad from Shed twenty
two in Wellington with Jason Pine and GJ. Gardner Holmes,
New Zealand's most trusted home builder, News Talk said be it's.

Speaker 3 (25:02):
Our twelve thirty seven news Talk to be at Shed
twenty two, Greexys afternoon. Jason, I don't know if I'm
drawing a long bow regarding Leroy Carter, but he reminds
me of an old all Black. I'm sure you'll remember
this name from way back, and if he's half as
good as this player, he'll be awesome. That player is Grant, Betty.
Do you see the similarities?

Speaker 4 (25:19):
Ask Greg? I do Greg? In terms of stature?

Speaker 3 (25:22):
The stature of Grant Batty and Leroy Carter very similar,
different eras obviously, but Grant Betty a winger of of
iconic status. I think it will be fit to say
just a nuggety, quite small but stocky guy. I do
see the similarities. I don't think you're drawing along bow
at all, Mark, Hi, mate.

Speaker 10 (25:46):
Hey Piney in another pub?

Speaker 6 (25:47):
Are you?

Speaker 3 (25:48):
I'm at another pub, yeah, another city, another pub. I'll
makes you a little bit. I don't quite know what
I'm going to do next week when there's no All
Blacks test and I've got to return to the to
the sterility, sterility of the ZB studio.

Speaker 10 (26:00):
Mate. Yeah, it'll be tough on you. I don't know
how you coach. I think Rafi threw his toys out
of the cot last week after the lost. I don't
think he's had a lost like he had last week
for a very long time, you know. And I think
the naming of the team on Monday, and it's complete

(26:22):
wiping out of his experienced players that he's always been
able to rely on has been a bit of a
knee jet reaction. And I think he gives our back's
quite a bit of an opportunity.

Speaker 3 (26:33):
You know, it's an interesting point. He's got rid of
was I got rid of? He's dropped a lot of experience,
Mark hasn't he you know, there's a and I guess
the flip side will be he gets exuberance, but he
does also lose a lot of experience. Pollard, Kleel, deal
Ende all dropped out of the side.

Speaker 7 (26:52):
Yeah, and on the All Blacks, I think Razor had
given Rico, you know, the chance last week before the game,
he'd sort of sort of almost intimated that it was
his last chance.

Speaker 10 (27:05):
And to me, yeah, Rico hasn't done that well on
the wing, and I think probably Carda, you know, given
super rugby you know form, has probably deserved a spot.
But it's not always a six guaranteed success, is there.
I mean I don't think, you know, when Britz went
to that left wing at the World Cup, I thought
that was a bit of a failure. I think that,

(27:27):
you know, people thought as super rugby form would equate
to like, you know, World Cup form, which I don't
think it did in the end. And yeah, I guess
time will tell with Karda, but yeah.

Speaker 3 (27:39):
Yeah, I think you know you're right. Leroy Carter has
earned his chance. He had a terrific Super Rugby season
with the Chiefs, so when all the way to the
final obviously didn't win it, but in those wide positions
and in particular on the wings, I just think, yeah,
if you're playing well in the season or so before
a World Cup, you put yourself in the picture. And look,

(27:59):
Leroy Carter is not a young guy. There's not twenty one.
He's twenty six, twenty seven, I think, and they often
talk about wingers once they reached twenty seven being almost discarded.
But look if he I really am very very interested
to see how he goes on debut tonight. I get
the feeling he'll be as energetic and enthusiastic as he
has been in Super Rugby and look, I wish him
all the best. Ibe as an absolute storm yep.

Speaker 10 (28:21):
I think I think we could be on on on
the song for a good win to know what's the weather?
Light down here? I'm coming down? What's it lightly? Is
it raining or is it.

Speaker 4 (28:32):
It's not raining?

Speaker 12 (28:33):
Going to be But wouldn't he yeah.

Speaker 3 (28:35):
Well yeah, I mean well you'll know if you've ever
visited Wellington Marketsley.

Speaker 4 (28:38):
The obbit of it's not gale force, nothing like that.

Speaker 3 (28:41):
As we were arriving at year twenty two, I could
sort of I could sense like a bit of a
bit of a a skiffle, a zephyr of a breeze,
but nothing which is going to really affect things too much.
I've checked the forecast. It's meant to die down tonight.
I don't think the conditions are going to play a part.
Mark you might want to bring a jacket. Other than that,
you should be fine, mate.

Speaker 10 (29:00):
One last thing up the wires.

Speaker 3 (29:02):
Up the wars, indeed, mark up the wars, indeed from
six o'clock this evening. Can't wait for that. Just a thought,
says Hamish on the box kick. They always say they're contestable,
but do you think they could be a bit of
a last resort sort of thing and a mission of defeat.
Almost the forwards are struggling to make the game line.
The backs have run out of ideas for line breaks.
We know our backline have been struggling a bit lately,

(29:24):
so a contestable kick might be the best option.

Speaker 4 (29:27):
When they're out of ideas. Hamish, interesting point.

Speaker 3 (29:30):
I think if you ask the coaches they wouldn't say
that it's a last resort. But look, when you've tried
other things and they're not working. Yeah, look it's an
option which they can go to and have often, and
not just the All Blacks the spring Box that last
week as well. I think the difference is the spring
Box believe that their box kicks, that they'll can test

(29:53):
the box kick a lot more effectively and therefore have
a better chance probably of winning it back. Anyway, We'll
see how they go tonight eighteen away from one.

Speaker 20 (30:03):
Back for Preston turn a candy and to the dance
and the All Blacks staff end the Fortress twenty four
seventeen and at all time chess match between these two nations.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
Yeah, that was a week ago at Eden Park. We
go again tonight at sky Stadium. Heineke Meyer is one
of the most celebrated rugby coaches in South African history.
He was the first South African coach to win Super
Rugby with the Balls in two thousand and seven. He
was Springbox coach from twenty twelve to twenty fifteen, guiding
South Africa to third place at the twenty fifteen Rugby
World Cup. Heinek am I joins us on the show Heinika.

(30:42):
Great to get your expertise across New Zealand. Let's go
back a week. What did you make of the spring
Box performance at Eden Park last weekend?

Speaker 17 (30:50):
Yeah?

Speaker 12 (30:50):
Thanks, firstly, just thank you for having me.

Speaker 21 (30:54):
Obviously you love your country, love the All Blacks and
at epic battles, so thanks for being on your show.

Speaker 12 (30:59):
Yeah. I thought it was an unbelievable test match. I
was glued to my seat. I always knew it's going
to be.

Speaker 21 (31:05):
Very very difficult world because especially with New Zident losing
against Argentina and with the Iden Park record. But I
thought it was a brilliant, brilliant test match. I thought
this didn't really played well. I think with the old game.
Change for me was that when you didn't got to eat,
it's always going to be difficult for Africa to chase.

Speaker 12 (31:22):
They're not a good chasing team.

Speaker 21 (31:24):
And I just thought the All Blacks want the small battles.

Speaker 12 (31:28):
I am, you.

Speaker 21 (31:30):
Know, every small battle, especially in the Rain. I thought
this Zilaan did really well and uh you know, put
pressions in Africa on the in the lineouts, but it
all came down to taking opportunities and it's always gonna
be difficult if you fought in zero down, especially away
from home and chasing in those wet conditions. So I
thought it was an awesome taste match. So Africa thats
well to come back, but I wasn't. I was involved.

Speaker 2 (31:52):
You know.

Speaker 21 (31:53):
I watched the previous two Test matches in South Africa
where the All Blacks was also aid and in South
Africa came back with their bench. I thought this this
time around. The New Zealand's show a lot of more composure.
But what a great Test match and believable Test match.

Speaker 3 (32:06):
Yeah, and the best thing is we get another one,
hopefully as good tonight. Interesting you mentioned the bench because
Resci Erasmus went with a five to three bench split
at Eden Park. He's done the same again tonight. Did
you think he might have gone six to two given
how effective the bomb squad tactic was in the in
the Rugby Championship in Johannesburg and Cape Town last year.

Speaker 21 (32:28):
Yeah, I think it's worked for them. I think with
the seven one and its too bigger risk away from
home and especially in New Zealand, our first six two
can work for them, and especially I think if the
game is speak obviously doesn't suit sou Africa showed against
Australia where they opened up the game and played unbelievable
rag mey and then in Australia came back and beat us.
But you know it just also I think he's got

(32:50):
so much respect for New Zealand because if you're not
covered everywhere, the cident can take you, you know, take
you apart.

Speaker 12 (32:55):
But I also think he sees the backers impact.

Speaker 21 (32:58):
So this week's going to be a total, total different game.
I still think they've got a good forward back, but
very exciting back, so it's going to be a hell
of exciting game.

Speaker 3 (33:06):
Do you expected them to be more expensive because it
was a type battle as you would have seen last
weekend oft eating Park. Do you expect both teams to
perhaps at least attempt to be a bit more expensive.

Speaker 21 (33:18):
Yeah, I know I probably old school, but I think
before I answer you there, I think it's going to
come down to three things. I think it's going to
come down firstly to the scrum battle, and.

Speaker 12 (33:27):
Then second is going to come down to the aerial battle.

Speaker 21 (33:29):
You know, there's islands straggled the first fifteen minutes and
then they scored two great trials and then to Africa
tea chase and then they couldn't just kick the ball
in the air and contest. So I think there's lin's
done well of their team, you know, especially the back
three for the area battle. And I think where these
games are one and lost is in the last twenty
minutes when the impact players comes on. I think South

(33:51):
Africa had a huge luxury, you know, in the way back,
especially the two previous Test matches when they won in
South Africa, where the bench they brought up was brilliant,
very very much experienced guys that could play, that could
start in any Test match. You know, that guys on
the bench of sixty seventy test matches US learned that
young guys on the bench and still finding their feet suddenly,

(34:12):
So Africa also has now more inexperienced guys on the
bench and it doesn't fight it as you know, as
they used to. So I think the last twenty minutes,
when the fresh legs comes on, that's going to be
a big difference. And I think the big chance of
the AFFG is going to be I mean, I think
Tony Brown's been brilliant. You know, they're moving in the
right direction, playing more expansive. But the big question mark

(34:33):
for me is going to be when they played like
that against Australia.

Speaker 12 (34:36):
They were valeted and then.

Speaker 21 (34:38):
Suddenly when they got tired, makes you know, mistakes and
three turners crossed them three three tries in Australia came back.
So it's going to be a fine line between you know,
trying to be expansive and these guys can score tries.
They're very, very exciting and good forwards. But again if
they the one thing I've learned against the Zilian if
you make mistakes, they're going to punish you.

Speaker 12 (34:57):
So it's going to be a fine balance. But I
still think.

Speaker 21 (34:59):
It's all going to be about, you know, set piece
and pressure and suffocate.

Speaker 3 (35:03):
Yeah, those those areas you mentioned fascinating to make. The
scrum and the and the aerial part of the game.
I mean you would have seen the South African scrum,
you know, when that tight hit on New Zealand's ball
which indirectly led to a try. The aerial battle, I
think most of us thought South Africa had the better
of that. Do you expect them to bomb away again
tonight in Wellington? I mean it might be a little

(35:23):
bit windy. So do you think they'll employ some of
the tactics.

Speaker 21 (35:28):
Yeah, I think it's I think they will, but I
think it will be stupid. If they picked this exciting
back line and they just want to play a tactical game,
then they probably would have gone with Polo and and
and Villian guys that's more used to that, and the
nine that's that's a good box kicker, like a fuff.
I think that they're gonna, you know, take a chance,
play more expansive rugby, but they will always stick to

(35:50):
their DNA, you know, so they will. There will there
will always be aerial battle. I mean that's part of
the new game. But I think they're going to take
more chances because they feel that you have to score
tries against New Zealand. You're not just going to defend.
They're not just going to outmuscle them. And one thing
I'm been very impressed, you know, I follow New Zealand
in epic battles. I've been really impressed. Are they improved

(36:12):
in their forwards. The big thing that I think they've
done right is South Africa. If they scram well, more
well pressure and suffocate, they win games. Suddenly, newsileents stopping
the malls and I thought this linscrame well by that
one scram. So I think they've done great work with
their forwards, you know, duffing them up, scramming well, puting
pressure on the set piece.

Speaker 12 (36:33):
So suddenly South Africa is a very very strong team.

Speaker 21 (36:35):
They win the set piece battle and then they'd force
you into mistakes. But suddenly news Leents is really improved
in their forwards, and you know, I've been really impressed
with their scrammaging battle as well lately. And I know
one scram was a bad scram, but all over, I
think they've done great work with their forwards.

Speaker 3 (36:52):
We're right in the middle of a World Cup cycle.
We're two years since the last one and two years
away from the next one. How much evolution in terms
of players and playing style do you expect from the
spring Box between now now in the next Rugby World Cup.

Speaker 21 (37:10):
Yeah, I think they're in a difficult cycle because a
lot of those guys that won two World Cups. You know,
I don't want to take credit, but I picked most
of those guys at twenty one two and the All
Blacks had a brilliant team. I remember we last against
two points, but most of those All Black teams that
handed test matches and they were legends of the game.

Speaker 12 (37:27):
And now that's you know, it changes.

Speaker 21 (37:30):
They got older and rebuilding and South Africa is now
where the All Blacks who were when I used to coach.
But now also, you know, do you keep these guys
for another two years and they're all going to be
thirty five and you know, probably over their best or
do you do you start pushing the youngsters And I
think it's going to be a combination. But it's going
to be interesting times. You know, I think he has

(37:52):
to give youngsters a chance. But against you know, I
respect All Blacks so much. Every test match against them
is a battle, especially away from home.

Speaker 12 (38:00):
So in the one sense, it's good giving guys a chance.

Speaker 21 (38:02):
On the other side, you want to pick your best
team because you have to be at your beast if
you want to beat the all So this is going
to be a very interesting test match.

Speaker 3 (38:09):
I knew it's a me epic battles with the mess
coach that narrow semi final loss at the Rugby World
Cup in twenty fifteen, does that still sting a little bit?
Do you still think about that that game?

Speaker 21 (38:23):
Listen every game against New Zealand sting, we had epic battles,
and myself and Steve, you know, we tried to bring
back the mutual respect and I think it was great.
We had beers afterwards, and I think we both both
old schooled and believe in the ethics of the game,
so it was great battles. I think, you know, that
was one of the best teams that ever played the game.
And you know, the last few games, I think we

(38:47):
won one by two points, lost one by two, lost
that one by three. So I always felt we closed
the gap. But so much respect for that team. And
obviously every game where you present your country, you don't win.
But I always knew that you have to be at
your best, and that was epic battles. You know, I
really really thought that was an amazing team and just
such honor. You know, I always stood, you know, on

(39:10):
the sidelines facing the half gut, not the want to
be on TV.

Speaker 12 (39:13):
Actually I've got so much respect, and you know, I
wanted to be there and experience that. So I was
so blessed, you.

Speaker 21 (39:19):
Know, to coach against them not easy. I would like
to prefer to to coach against easy New Zealand teams,
but you don't get easy New zealin teams. But yeah,
we had epic battles and the good friends a lot
of those guys, and so much respect, you know, between
the two countries, and I think that's great for the game.

Speaker 3 (39:35):
Absolutely, and that respect continues between the players, the coaches
and the fans as well. At won't surprise you'll learn
there were there were thousands of South African fans there
last week mixing with the All Blacks fans. The vibe
was fantastic and we're hoping for more of the same tonight.
Haniker has been great to get the chance to chat.
Thanks for being so generous with your time this afternoon.

Speaker 21 (39:54):
No, thank you so much. And yeah, I actually hope
these battles can keep on going. And like you said,
you know, it's such a great to few of the
best countries in the world playing against each other, but
afterwards being friends, and I think that's what tract is
all about. And we're looking forward to a great dismatch.
I think there's gonna be a crack off a game
and I can't wait. Different you know, different things are
upening with both sides, the zillions on the apps, so

(40:15):
that it has got huge challenges, but it's going to
be It's going to be small, small margins and I
just hope we get a great, great deskmatch and keep
the friendship and keep the battles going.

Speaker 3 (40:25):
Yeah, I'm sure we will, Haneker, I'm sure we will.
Thanks again for your time, Henick, am I there, one
of the most celebrated rugby coaches in South African history
and spring box coach between twenty twelve and twenty fifteen.
We can sport coming to your life from Shed twenty
two on Wellington's waterfront, seven Away from One Back in
a Moment.

Speaker 1 (40:43):
Live from Shed twenty two and Wellington ahead of the
Old Blacks v. South Africa. We can sport with Jason
Pine and G. J. Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted
home builder on your Home of Sports used Talk.

Speaker 3 (40:56):
Sivy four Away from One at Shed twenty two, Dave
says Kila Parney, although we live an upper hutbah, too
cold for this soul fowler to hit them to SHD
twenty two for record at all. I'm wondering if Rassi
is not bringing out a bomb squad so opposition teams
can't work out the best way to defend it before
the next World Cups. Smart move if that is his strategy,
go the abs, Thanks Dave. Oh you've also said the

(41:18):
wars and to draw in the Australian Argentina game. Thanks Dave,
appreciate your text. More calls after one more on site
talkback as well. Number of South African fans I think
quite keen to have a chat to us Corey Jane
also after one o'clock, in particular the best strategy to
deal with the aerial battle.

Speaker 2 (41:39):
Bringing you the build up, the Blacks, the battle.

Speaker 20 (41:42):
Captain of Stating Bard.

Speaker 2 (41:45):
And the banter.

Speaker 1 (41:47):
Right as we count down to the Old Blacks v
South Africa. It's Weekend Sport with Jason save Pine Why
from Shed twenty two and Wellington on your home of
Sport News Talks.

Speaker 3 (42:00):
Heb Yes, indeed, welcome back into the show Weekend Sport
on News Talks. HEB coming to your live from Wellington's
water Front Shed twenty two to be precise, ahead of
this epic test match tonight. We're an epic test match
at Eton Park a week ago. Let's hope for similar
scenes tonight at sky Stadium. Although I'm sure the two
gentlemen said opposite me would be hoping for a different result.

(42:22):
I've got Mike and Gary. Gary, you were at Eden
Park last week. You're still getting over it.

Speaker 22 (42:28):
Definitely. It was heartbreaking. The atmosphere was absolutely incredible. But
it was a close game, not the result we wanted.
But what can I say? Rugby's rugby and the best
team won on the name.

Speaker 3 (42:40):
Well, someone said to me last week it was a
South African fan actually, that both of these teams can
play their best and still lose to the other because
they are aren't they, Mike, the two best teams going around.
What chance do you give you boys to make it
one apiece tonight?

Speaker 8 (42:55):
Definitely not more than fifty to fifty.

Speaker 23 (42:59):
Yeah, I think the box had a big change, big
changes in the tide.

Speaker 8 (43:03):
So let's see.

Speaker 23 (43:05):
I think it's just a bit of experimentation going on
here by Rassi.

Speaker 8 (43:09):
So there. I think New Zeeland probably edge it, all.

Speaker 4 (43:13):
Right, we'll see what happens.

Speaker 3 (43:14):
Fortunately, no, and I'm look at look, it's very magnan.
But look, I think most New Zealand rugby fans would
say this is a coin flop between these two sides.
It was last week. I think it will be again
tonight before we get into the game. You've you've flying
in for the game.

Speaker 6 (43:30):
Yes, we did it, We did.

Speaker 22 (43:32):
Fuji came in Auckland, got a camp event, went down
to the South Island in Wellington tonight, back to Auckland
tomorrow in Australia on Monday.

Speaker 3 (43:41):
Amazing.

Speaker 4 (43:41):
What a tour.

Speaker 22 (43:42):
Yeah, it's amazing pies in New Zealand. Amazing people Radby
mad love the country.

Speaker 4 (43:49):
Amazing pies, the.

Speaker 6 (43:50):
Best pies that have ever had in Marlow Well.

Speaker 3 (43:53):
Actually one of your countrymen, Matt Peace, who does the
Super Sport rugby commentary, he loves the peanuts slams. Have
you had a chance to try those mics a peanuts
It's just basically a put of chocolate with a bunch
of peanuts in it. Really, because the name would suggest
I think you'd like them.

Speaker 6 (44:07):
Give it a best definitely.

Speaker 3 (44:11):
So you went Do you say you went down to
the South on as well? So you got on the
beery went down south were give us it down south?

Speaker 23 (44:17):
We went down to Queenstown, spent a couple of nights there,
then across the christ Church amazing. We went over the
mountains between the two, coming back up and We went
through a little snowstorm there.

Speaker 8 (44:28):
It was wonderful. You've ever seen it before, driven in
it before?

Speaker 3 (44:33):
You obviously arrived safely, So have you done most of
the driving, Gary, all of them, all.

Speaker 4 (44:37):
Of the driving.

Speaker 22 (44:38):
Mike was having a looking out. They enjoying this city.
I didn't drive you.

Speaker 4 (44:43):
I think he's got the better end.

Speaker 6 (44:44):
Of the well. I just hope tonight there's no rain.

Speaker 22 (44:47):
I think it'll be running Rugby, good, tackling hard rugby.
I knew at Eden Park once the rain started that
our chances were very slimming.

Speaker 6 (44:56):
Is in and in the rain on their home ground.

Speaker 3 (44:58):
It was the rain wasn't even forecast. It was meant
to be a clear, dry night. And then if you
know him being there, the heavens just open with about
five minutes gone, and it actually really affected things, didn't it.

Speaker 23 (45:09):
Yeah, our guys are not too good in the wet.
I think maybe the answer are a bit cold. It's
quite chilly.

Speaker 3 (45:17):
Well, well, it.

Speaker 4 (45:20):
Does have a reputation of being a little bit windy.

Speaker 3 (45:23):
It is. I'm just having a look at the forecast
for what it's worth, and there's no rain in it,
but it will be a bit blustery. Have you visited
sky Stadium before, No, it's the first time. So what
you'll notice when you're in there is it the wind
tends to swirl around a lot. You look at the
two corner flags and they'll be heading in different directions.
It's it's it's it's got its own little ecosystem in there.

Speaker 24 (45:41):
Yeah.

Speaker 8 (45:41):
A bit tough for the kickers well.

Speaker 3 (45:43):
And the receivers and we know, I mean the aerial
the aerial assault. Do you expects how they were going
to do that again tonight?

Speaker 22 (45:48):
Not with the winds probably, but if the winds I
wouldn't say so. I say keep born in and and
just go forward.

Speaker 11 (45:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (45:55):
Well, this team of yours is one of the last
last couple of or it's one of the last two
World Cups. Yes, I just had to have a quick
count in my head. Where do you think they are
at the moment? As we're right in the middle of
a World Cup cycle for twenty twenty.

Speaker 22 (46:08):
Seven, I personally think Russia, now the chances are winning
this championship is a bit slim. I'd start bringing the
youngsters like Sessa Mangozulu, all the youngsters in now for
the next two years, because two years goes very quickly.
I would start concentrating on the young black coming in
and vally ar all the old guys now let them

(46:29):
go excuse postures, but I'd concentrate the youngsters, forget about
this championship and look for the next two years to
be the first country to win it three times.

Speaker 4 (46:38):
Yes, you would be. You've got the maths right there
as well.

Speaker 18 (46:42):
You would be.

Speaker 3 (46:44):
But Mike, there are some really experienced guys shook out,
Andre Pollard, Jesse Kleiel, Damian del Endo, Willie LaRue even
see Kalisi. These guys have been around for a long time.
I don't I don't know. You can't chuck them all out.
Can you still need that base of experience for a
World Cup?

Speaker 23 (46:58):
Well, they've been facing him in a few see the
Locks say they're bringing in the younger guys also brought
back a cup like lu at the Yaka him coming back,
he's injury prone.

Speaker 8 (47:10):
I don't know.

Speaker 23 (47:10):
They need to get the new blood in there and
get it blooded and get some experience. And there's no
better experience than playing the All Blacks.

Speaker 4 (47:18):
I was going to ask about the All Blacks.

Speaker 3 (47:20):
Are they still the South African Rugby fans like yourself
still regard the All Blacks as the biggest challenge in rugby.

Speaker 6 (47:26):
No, absolutely, definitely.

Speaker 8 (47:28):
Are we straight the last World Cup?

Speaker 23 (47:30):
I don't know, but one point one point us going
for three weeks in a row there with one points.

Speaker 3 (47:37):
I was going to say, your heart rates would have been,
would have been through the roof, last work.

Speaker 23 (47:40):
Finished after every game. Can't happen again, and it did
and again.

Speaker 3 (47:46):
Well we won one in twenty eleven by one point
in France, and I don't think people have recovered from
them yet either.

Speaker 8 (47:52):
But stressful.

Speaker 18 (47:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 22 (47:53):
Well, as this So African supporter, the best rugby player
ever is Richard McCall just played for the wrong country.

Speaker 4 (48:02):
Well we're pretty poleased he was born here.

Speaker 6 (48:04):
Yeah, and he's even So Africa as well respected.

Speaker 25 (48:07):
Man.

Speaker 22 (48:07):
I mean I remember the likes of zinzen Brook back
in the day, you know. So we've been going with
New Zealand rugby for a very long time, the.

Speaker 8 (48:16):
Two classic teams as far as I'm concerned.

Speaker 3 (48:18):
And yeah, I noticed too in Auckland and again today.
It just feels as though there's a real respect among
the fans as well. I mean there's no yes, we
bent it with one another. But it's all I think
it's it's based on a foundation of respect us.

Speaker 8 (48:32):
Yeah, yeah, make a long way.

Speaker 22 (48:34):
Even after lost lost Saturday, walking out the stadium, guys
are given you high five, shaking your hand. You know,
there was no animosity. It was actually not good to news,
but it wasn't they. I'd rather lose against New Zealand
than anybody else.

Speaker 3 (48:47):
Yeah, with the same.

Speaker 4 (48:49):
If we're going to lose to anybody, rather be you
blokes than England or Australia.

Speaker 6 (48:56):
The worst.

Speaker 3 (48:56):
Yeah they are. Hey, guys, great to see you. Thanks
for stopping in for a for a chat. We'll get you.

Speaker 4 (49:00):
We'll get you a b OF voucher.

Speaker 3 (49:01):
Although you're seeing you're on your way already. Mike, sounds
like you carry on from the camper vanmate.

Speaker 23 (49:05):
Absolutely where they go.

Speaker 3 (49:09):
The best win, yeah, May the best team win tonight.
May it be an epic battle. Good on you guys.
That's Mike and Gary joining us from Shed twenty two.
Great to have some South African fans with us as
we look towards another We hope epic test match tonight.
News talks it'd be and weekend Sport one fifteen. Let's
bring it now one of our great test wingers.

Speaker 2 (49:29):
As Jimmy cown he gets it.

Speaker 16 (49:31):
Word to Jane, I want a big four tier Cory
Tame season.

Speaker 2 (49:35):
Yes, he goes, He's got teams. Cory Jane back to
his best.

Speaker 3 (49:43):
And his best was very, very good. Fifty three test,
fifty five game, former All Blacks winger, eighteen tries and
those fifty three tests at twenty eleven Rugby World Cup
winning Our assistant coach at the Hurricanes, Corey Jane is
with us.

Speaker 4 (49:56):
Corey, can we start with the.

Speaker 3 (49:58):
Aerial game because it's been such a talking point, not
just in this little period of the Rugby Championship but
right across the year. Really a master of diffusing those
aerial bombs. So what are the key parts of being
good under the high ball defensively to start with?

Speaker 11 (50:17):
Yeah, it's an awesome talking point, isn't it.

Speaker 25 (50:20):
Look we were we had mcburne teaching us back in
the days, and let's come back to where it kind
of was back when when I played in they had
the contest in the air and it went away from
it a bit. You know, we're able to block. Now
we've come back into it again. So the importance of
technique is is back. We lost it there for a

(50:42):
little bit because you were able to shield for them.
So you have to be better with your technique, and
by that I mean being square into the into the collision.
You're allowed to protect yourself of your knee jumping up
and being nice and square, and guys should be able
to back themselves to catch the ball. I think there's
too many guys jumping in the air and turning their bodies,

(51:04):
turning their hips, and most teams that are chasing are
just jumping to try to whack the ball back. They're
actually not trying to catch the ball. And so you've
got to be a bit more square and you jump
and a bit earlier to.

Speaker 11 (51:19):
Try to win the ball, especially when they're kicking it
to you.

Speaker 3 (51:22):
So in other words, as you jump up, you should
basically be facing the goalpost at the other end or
facing the other end square on yep.

Speaker 11 (51:30):
And you do that not only to.

Speaker 25 (51:33):
Be stronger to catch the ball, because with your knee
up and you're in a strong position, but it's also
it protects yourself as well, because if you don't jump square,
if your knees square and you get hit as the
collisions happen.

Speaker 11 (51:46):
You're in a stronger position.

Speaker 25 (51:47):
If you turn your body and your knees a little
bit sidewards and you get hit, you could fall on
the back of your head. You can flip over the guy.
So it's also a little bit of safety for the
catcher to get back to a better technique. And again,
most people have lost it because you're able to block
for them, so you could cheat the technique a little
bit more.

Speaker 11 (52:07):
But yeah, that's the.

Speaker 25 (52:09):
That's the most that's the better way to catch it
and the safest way.

Speaker 3 (52:12):
And they say keep the one that keep your eye
on the ball, which I'm sure is important too, But
how how tempting is it to have aw we look
at who's at who's sort of closing in on you
from an opposition point of view.

Speaker 25 (52:23):
Nah, you be honest, men, You know that they're coming
and you can feel them when you're watching the ball anyway,
and you do you should do your homework, you know,
I know, I know when I played a long long
time ago, you knew which wingers you were, you were
who was chasing, and how they like to attack the ball,
and so.

Speaker 11 (52:42):
You do all that anyway, and you know it's it's
cool getting up in the air.

Speaker 25 (52:46):
Rugby has changed now, and it's funny when you when
I hear people talk about catching high balls and wingers
need to help the fullbacks and all that. Back when
I played, there was one fullback and wingers were in
the backfield. Now days, you know, the last six seven years,
there's two fullbacks, your fullbacks in the backfield and your
tens or in the backfield. So wingers don't catch high

(53:08):
balls anymore. It's your fifteen and it's your ten catching
high balls. So when they say that wingers need to
help Will Jordan and in the backfield catching high balls,
they don't do it.

Speaker 11 (53:18):
It's just the system and the game's change.

Speaker 25 (53:21):
It's more on your ten and you're fifteen to be
better at at.

Speaker 11 (53:24):
Catching techniques than it is wingers these days.

Speaker 3 (53:27):
I remember, though, that Rugby World Cup semi final in
twenty eleven. You knew Australia were going to kick all night.
You Israel, Dad, Richard Kahui diffused everything. I remember all
three of you being under the high ball, you know,
quite regularly that night or as my memory failed me.

Speaker 25 (53:42):
We know we had a mindset that whole World Cup
to be one hundred percent and so we put a
lot of work into catching eyeballs and I know the
guys do now again, but you know, like technique becomes
a massive part of it. And we didn't know that
Ozzie were going to put heaps of high balls up
because we've actually done an all right job during the

(54:02):
whole World Cup.

Speaker 11 (54:04):
Where they just keep putting them up, and.

Speaker 25 (54:06):
You know, we had a we had a focus to
diffuse them and you know we managed to do that.

Speaker 11 (54:12):
But yeah, like the games come back where the box.

Speaker 25 (54:16):
Kick is is massive again and you know it's it's
going to be there, and I don't know if it's
exactly what usually World Rugby wanted to speed the game
up because everyone's setting up box kicks now. But the
contact in the air, the collision, you know, it's back,
and I don't mind it because I, again I made
a living of catching those things.

Speaker 11 (54:36):
I actually enjoy seeing guys contest in the air.

Speaker 3 (54:40):
What about from attacking point of view, though, Cory, A
lot of people are mystified by the box cack. When
you're in possession, obviously you've got the ball you kick
at In general terms, what is the what is the
idea behind box kicking?

Speaker 11 (54:54):
Well, it's hard to catch now, you know, like it
used to be.

Speaker 25 (54:58):
You know, you put the the defensive team under pressure.
You can isolate guys in the backfield that probably not
the best at catching, and nowadays it's just such a
well last year or so, it's such an area where
its so contested and you know, most teams aren't catching them,

(55:18):
and so there's fifty fifties on the ground and the
ball can go anywhere and you can get a knock
on so you can get a set piece and I
think the All Blacks will try and play a little
bit more tonight. I don't think they'll want to continue
to go into the box kicks and play the I
guess the way that South Africa have played the game.

(55:39):
But it's just a great way to not.

Speaker 11 (55:42):
Put yourself under pressure. You know, if you're playing with the.

Speaker 25 (55:45):
Ball and you're going eighteen fifteen phases and you're not
making any inroads into the defense, you can put yourself
under pressure.

Speaker 11 (55:53):
And so you see at international.

Speaker 25 (55:55):
Level playoff football, the box kicking or the kicking can
take a little bit of pressure off off your attack,
can put pressure back onto the catching team and then
you can put them under pressure with your defense.

Speaker 11 (56:07):
So it's a massive part.

Speaker 25 (56:10):
In the game, and it's only going to grow with this,
you know the way that's it's gone now for the
collision work.

Speaker 4 (56:15):
Great insight, mate, great insight. I just want to ask
you about a.

Speaker 3 (56:18):
Couple of players who you've had a lot to do
with with the Hurricanes. Billy Propped is the first one.
He's been giving a decent crack in the thirteen jersey
this year for the All Blacks. Tonight will be his
sixth test of the seven this year. How do you
reckon he's going for the All Blacks at thirteen?

Speaker 25 (56:31):
Yeah, I don't think he's gone as bad as some
people have said. Obviously he's not, you know, his Test
minus rugby. He's not standing out like like I guess
he does with the Hurricanes. But if your watchers game properly,
and what he does for the Canes is his energy
and effort and to always be an option and to
always be in the right place and to always clean

(56:51):
up passes that have gone to ground or kicks or
make reads on defense like that was a big part
of it, and he's doing it now for the All Blacks.
I think a little bit of maybe guys inside him.
Geordie a couple of times have has made some interesting
reads which has put pressure on which put pressure on Billy.

(57:14):
But also did there Anton when he got the yellow card.
That was Jordie's fault from jamming in. And then the
wingers just where they're positioned, can can help or can
make it harder on midfielders because that's where the pressure
point is both attack and d and so so a
couple of the scrum options when he's got beaten, especially
against France, wasn't his fault. It was the wingers been

(57:38):
being too deep in that one, so they didn't help him.
So look, he's he's got to be better because the
pressures on him.

Speaker 11 (57:44):
But he hasn't been as bad as as some people
have made out in Wiles.

Speaker 4 (57:50):
And Reuben Love is the other one.

Speaker 3 (57:51):
He gets an opportunity off the bench tonight, just a
second test of the year, third overall. I guess he
just has to be patient, does he. We all know
what a good player rig is, but in a stacked backfield,
does he just have to be a bit patient?

Speaker 6 (58:04):
Yeah, he does, and.

Speaker 25 (58:04):
He's just got to take his opportunities, you know, Will
Jordan's at four big. You got McKenzie, who's I think
is you know, just as good at the back, and
he's awesome at catching high balls.

Speaker 11 (58:15):
And I think Ruben's.

Speaker 25 (58:16):
Best attribute is going to be high balls. You know,
he's quite good off off both legs jumping.

Speaker 11 (58:22):
We're not if you if you watch Will Jordan's.

Speaker 25 (58:25):
And McKenzie's and guys like that, they can only jump
off one one side of the you know, one leg,
where Reuben can actually jump off both.

Speaker 11 (58:32):
So he suited around the whole field. So that's his
best attribute.

Speaker 25 (58:36):
And if the kest coming, he gets an opportunity, you know,
he's just got to take it. And but yeah, you're
gonna have to be patient. Everyone knows, and and rugby
or in sports and any team, if you've got quality
guys in front of you, you know, you can't expect
to just say, coach, drop them and let me ever go.
You've got to, you know, continue to train well, and
when you do good opportunities, you've got to you've got

(58:58):
to perform. So then the coaches start thinking, I can
pay this guy, you reckon, we'll win again tonight.

Speaker 3 (59:05):
Yeah, I think I think so.

Speaker 25 (59:06):
I hope, So I'm going to be there I'm taking
my youngest, my youngest daughter to her first All Black game, so.

Speaker 11 (59:14):
Yeah, I hope.

Speaker 25 (59:14):
So I think, you know, like I said, the Allbacks
might throw it around a little bit more than what they.

Speaker 11 (59:20):
Did South Africa.

Speaker 25 (59:23):
I don't have to be so predictable as they were
to start the game, you know, same kind of line
out strike to throw them all and got picked the.

Speaker 11 (59:32):
Part and they started bad and they worked their way
back into it.

Speaker 25 (59:36):
So I reckon it is going to be an unbelievable
test match and what a cool place to be in
at the Capitol.

Speaker 3 (59:42):
Absolutely right, great to chat as always. Corey enjoyed the game, mate,
Thanks for your time.

Speaker 11 (59:46):
Here's Bonny, good on you mate.

Speaker 3 (59:48):
That is Cory Jane, assistant coach with the Hurricanes these
days and former All Blacks winger of course Rugby World
Cup winner. He knows a lot about the game of rugby,
you can tell just by listening to him. Corey Jane
has always been a guy who's been a bit of
a joker. I think he's always great in media situations,
was when he was playing, but always sort of considered
as as you know, a bit of a joker, a

(01:00:11):
guy who was going to bring everybody together with a
laugh and you know, a clever line. But he has
a deep rugby knowledge. It's obvious just from listening to him.
In the detail he went into there about how as
you catch the high ball, why you do box kicks?
What we should be looking for when we look at
the way Billy Proctor is playing for the All Blacks
at the moment?

Speaker 18 (01:00:31):
Was this?

Speaker 3 (01:00:32):
Says on text, Please make Corey Jane the next All
Blacks coach. Well, you know he's in that Hurricane system.
He's in charge of defense at Hurricanes HQ. And I'll
tell you what, he's clearly built up a very impressive
breadth of rugby knowledge. Great to have Corey Jane on
the show. Marsi's Piney. You're probably going to join me
at AA after the rugby seat. With all these pup stops, Mars,

(01:00:55):
I've only got one more after this, Unfortunately, only more
one more home test after this, one back up in
Auckland in the back end of September. Not quite sure
where we'll rock up that day, but we'll keep you posted.
A bit of advice to Mike our South African found
on text. If you don't like the weather in New Zealand.

Speaker 6 (01:01:13):
Just wait for.

Speaker 3 (01:01:15):
Wait for five minutes.

Speaker 4 (01:01:17):
Yeah that's Auckland, that wasn't it.

Speaker 3 (01:01:18):
If you don't know whether in Auckland, just wait five minutes,
it'll be completely different. Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty,
want to open the lines for some calls. Anything you
heard from Corey, Jane there, anything that's been percolating around
in your head ahead of this Test match. Just heard
news that unconfirmed that George Bauer has been pulled out
of the Otago site for their game this afternoon and.

Speaker 4 (01:01:40):
Has been flowing to Wellington as cover.

Speaker 3 (01:01:42):
So I don't think that means there's any changes coming
necessary or I don't I don't know this to be true.
But Ethan DeGroot and Tyrell Lomax are set to start
tonight with to Mighty Williams and Fletcher Nuwell coming off
the bench. The other props in the squad pussly or
Tossy and Olie Norris. So yeah, George Bauer, we're just

(01:02:03):
getting that news through has been pulled out of the
Otago side today, flying up to Wellington to provide cover.
So we'll keep keep ears on that one for you
and if we find anything else out then we'll we'll
let you know. One twenty eight News Talks hed B.
Let's talk from Rugby. Any thoughts you have on the game.
We're going to transition across the Warriors after two o'clock,
but your chance to talk rugby between now and two

(01:02:25):
oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty Back at the
moment as we broadcast live from Shed twenty two on
Wellington's waterfront.

Speaker 2 (01:02:34):

He's a bloody living legend mate.

Speaker 3 (01:03:10):

Speaker 3 (01:03:25):

Speaker 4 (01:03:27):
How many you got here?

Speaker 26 (01:03:28):
Pretty much got twelve on the road A social club

so the boss has contributed. We're staying at the cambridge
around the corner. It's obviously accommodation in pub and one
we shall be grouping there about two pm checking and
then it saw us all on from there made and
then we'll be walking to the game, the big game.
But we've got another big one on soon. I think
Battle of the Bass indeed.

Speaker 3 (01:03:49):
Bettle of the Base, Hawk's Bay, Bay of plenty up
and tod longer. How do you reckon? You make pipes
are traveling?

Speaker 18 (01:03:55):
I think we were right.

Speaker 26 (01:03:56):
It sort of depends how a ford peck front up
we've got all the names there. We must sing, Oh
he's our first five today. But mcclutchy's stepping in. There
is Harry God God frees out, is negla injury?

Speaker 3 (01:04:09):
Yeah he's a player. I like him.

Speaker 26 (01:04:12):
He is. Dan Sullivan's been going well at fullback. But yeah,
bay planey, they've got a solid pack mate led by
Kurt Eckland. And to just spends how we run up
I think and Parson's place. I get it last week, mate,
See we're in all the chance. But I tell you
what now, meg Pie, the Hawkeye is going to fly
up there and lay a big bay of plenty steamer
right on their parade.

Speaker 3 (01:04:30):
Mate, that's my prediction.

Speaker 27 (01:04:33):
I love it.

Speaker 4 (01:04:34):
I'm glad I got you guys on. I love the
provincial rivalry that comes with some things like this.

Speaker 3 (01:04:38):
Have you been to sky Stadium much, Christian? Is this
a sort of an annual pilgrimage to a testment?

Speaker 16 (01:04:43):
Came up last year for our work social club came
up last year and there was all blacks us Australia yep.
Got away with a good win that day yep. And
then this year the boss here, look, let's go up
for the Springbox game. Let's get the spring box a
good run for the money, and let's get into and
fucking really test them.

Speaker 4 (01:04:58):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's it's a.

Speaker 3 (01:05:00):
It's a. I mean sky Stadium hasn't been the happiest
hunting ground for the All Blacks.

Speaker 4 (01:05:05):
I mean the win last year against Australia.

Speaker 3 (01:05:08):
Before that, I think four or five without a Win's
uch's gutsy to come here, you know, really you could
have gone to Auckland where we.

Speaker 4 (01:05:14):
We never lose.

Speaker 16 (01:05:15):
Yeah, well, let's just beat the curse in let's come
away with the win. I think. Ay, So as long
as the boys get and go hard and they can
do it, I think so.

Speaker 4 (01:05:22):
Yeah, I agree.

Speaker 3 (01:05:23):
I look, I think last week was a bit of
pressure off, right, you know, I mean they've lost last week.
Entirely different game tonight, Right, what do you what are
you expecting? It's going to be a bit windy, that
won't surprise you. What are you expecting tonight?

Speaker 26 (01:05:33):
I'm expecting. I'm expecting an All Black one. I think
Racey's you know, he's he's robbed the dice. But then again,
his young guys, if they stand up, anything can happen.
I wish we could slot Creole into thirteen for us.
I think that it'll be lights out for those guys then.
But yeah, I'm really keen to see Carter on the wing.
And I think Rays has made some fold decisions, but

(01:05:54):
they're probably due. Just wish we had Caleb Clark Beck
as well. I think he would have been a great addition,
you know. But no, I think I think it's all on.

Speaker 6 (01:06:01):
Mate.

Speaker 3 (01:06:01):
What a spectacle. Oh, I agree, and like we it's
it is the best rivalry, isn't. We can say you
were like playing against Australia, But I don't know. We've
had to let us like up for too long now.
I mean, they probably will be more competitive, but there's
just something different is and they're about the spring box.
I just love it when they come to town. They
bring their fans. You know, it's always going to be
about all right.

Speaker 26 (01:06:20):
Oh, there's nothing like it made. And there's so many
of them here. It's just amazing. We went into going
to and they're just everywhere and they're all in good spirits,
you know, his name, negative stuff around.

Speaker 3 (01:06:28):
So let's just get into a game on. I say, mate,
came on, have you stayed at the Cambridge before.

Speaker 6 (01:06:33):
Yeah, we love the cane.

Speaker 3 (01:06:35):
It's a cracker and it's absolute. It's like, well, I
was going to say it's the center of the universe
this weekend. It probably is with you blokes there. Oh,
I will say Pioneer year.

Speaker 26 (01:06:44):
Last year we were there and for the as Christa said,
for the Aussie game. And who who spoke David Campese
and Dave Loverage. You know, I asked Campo, mate, what
was the difference between you and all these modern day wingers?
He said it was preparation. Roger and Michael Lyina helped
me with that ease. I couldn't be bothered going down
after ours, but he dragged me along. So that was
really interesting to hear.

Speaker 3 (01:07:03):
You know, he's had some interesting things to say about Joe.

Speaker 4 (01:07:06):
Listen, he he.

Speaker 12 (01:07:07):
Just hates to me.

Speaker 6 (01:07:09):
Yeah, that's a.

Speaker 3 (01:07:10):
Strong one.

Speaker 6 (01:07:12):
To argue.

Speaker 4 (01:07:13):
Yeah, but then you look what Joe Schmitt's done.

Speaker 3 (01:07:15):
You know, they went over to Ellis Park and came
back from what twenty two to win that. They beat
Argentina last week. What I loved about that game they
had the chance to draw it at the end, had
a shot at goal would have been a drawer. We'll
take the win.

Speaker 2 (01:07:26):
I reckon.

Speaker 3 (01:07:27):
I mean, I'm not saying they're going to win the
Bledder Slow Cup Christian, but they're better than they used
to be out Bay.

Speaker 26 (01:07:32):
Yeah, let's start Wonder's made and Campanese to maybe get
on here and apologize about it.

Speaker 3 (01:07:38):
Boys, It's been so good to see you. We've got
a couple of drinks aboutchers for it. Unless we've already
given them to you, We've probably got some more for you.
Thanks for stopping and great to see you. Enjoy the
rest of your stay. Thanks, love you mate, Get on
your voice cover of cople of Fantastic all lax fans
from Hawks Bay, Kristin and Roger joining us. If you
are in the area Shared twenty two. It's on Wellington's waterfront.
We would love to see you. Please feel free to

(01:07:59):
pop in and say gooday or give us a yell
on the phone.

Speaker 4 (01:08:02):
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty helloeen.

Speaker 14 (01:08:06):
H.

Speaker 27 (01:08:07):
Hey you going today?

Speaker 3 (01:08:08):
I'm doing very well today and I'm at I'm at
another I'm at another pub, so it seems to be
working out well for me.

Speaker 27 (01:08:15):
I know I he that person before, see he must
be very alcohol done and I'm just so sure about
that because of your job. But of course today it's
the battle of the bays and numbers that those two
people on police that come down from Hawk's Bay and
Orange the thing. I can't travel. I'm on a wheel yours,

(01:08:38):
I think, but I haven't said that, you know. I
just love it and my possession today is the base
is going to win and come back to the bay.
Don't forgive the sorrow for us year and they give
us a.

Speaker 18 (01:08:54):
Hide they have been.

Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
He gave you a hiding last year? Did that that's
slipped my memory? Did they give you a bit of
a tech club?

Speaker 1 (01:09:02):
Oh?

Speaker 27 (01:09:03):
I took club. Wouldn't be the woods for I want to.

Speaker 3 (01:09:08):
Ah, good Manny, and well you've got a couple of
your Hawks bay. Faithful heir, I'm flying the flag. Great
to hear from you too, mate. Enjoy that game, enjoy
the all black stest tonight. Thanks for taking the time
to call and really really appreciate it, um Mecca, says
Piney Corey Jane's explanation of the box keck spot on.
I keep explaining to my wife every game he goes
to bed at half time that they don't know how

(01:09:30):
to diffuse them.

Speaker 4 (01:09:30):
God on your maca you look.

Speaker 3 (01:09:31):
I think that's probably one of the most insightful bits
of rugby analysis we've had for ages. Having having Corey
Jane on the show, we do have time for a
couple more course, here John on the line. He seems
to have dropped off. We might try and get John back. Oh,
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty h Phil says, what
a great chat with Corey Jane. I loved listening to him.
A guy who really knows what he's talking about. Brilliant.

(01:09:52):
He may even have changed my view on box kicking,
but only a little. And feed the backs, says Phil.
Feed the backs, driving and enjoying Piney. What about the
World Cup game tonight, Yes, don't you worry. We are
different getting onto the World Cup game tonight. The Black
Ferns up against South Africa. Stacy Walker is on the
show with us after two o'clock, So after two we're

(01:10:15):
going to pivot. We know there's lots of sport on,
we know that there's lots to cover off, so Warriors.
After two we're going to talk to rich Hagar, the
assistant coach of the Warriors, headed the game against Penrith
and I and then Stacy Walker out of the black
ferns as well. Don't forget also your chance to win
when we play a sporting chance in around an hour

(01:10:37):
or so from now. This is where we give you
the chance to have a punt with a one hundred
and fifty dollars bonus bet from the tab. We've given
you three options, or we will give our lucky caller
three options. They choose whichever one they want and if
it comes in then they claim the winnings. Oh, eight
hundred and eighty ten eighty As always as our number
twenty one away from two, we'll take a break. Come

(01:10:58):
back heat across the Tasman where there's plenty of sport
happening as well, including the second Rugby Championship Test between
Argentina and the Wallaby this afternoon. Adam Peacock, our Ossie correspondent,
going to stopping after this.

Speaker 2 (01:11:13):
Counting down to Ald Lakes v South Africa on your
home of Sport.

Speaker 1 (01:11:18):
It's weekend Sport Late from Shed twenty two in Wellington
with Jason five and GJ. Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most
trusted home builder, News Talk said, be.

Speaker 3 (01:11:28):
Starting to get quite packed here at Shed twenty two.
We're here until three o'clock this afternoon. Our build up
to the test this evening starts at six here on
news Talk, said b kickoff is at five past seven,
and just a reminder that if you want to hang
around after the game, we are going to take some
calls after full time tonight. We did it last week
at Edon Park. It seemed to go okay. We had

(01:11:49):
a lot of people calling in wanting to give their
instant reaction to the game, so we will do that
again tonight. So at the completion of the match and
once Elliott Smith and Ross Bond have wrapped up their
tactical analysis, then we will open the lines between then,
which is likely to be what around quarter past twenty
pasts through until ten o'clock.

Speaker 4 (01:12:08):
Will take some instant reaction.

Speaker 3 (01:12:11):
So if you go into the game and a driving
home afterwards, provided your hands free or a passenger in
the car, you might want to give us a yell.
But yeah, instant reaction after the game tonight here on
news Talk, said BTE Peter says, piney, can you stop
mentioning the wind in every second conversation you have? There
was wind and rain last week, but it was hardly mentioned. Yeah,

(01:12:33):
thanks Pete. Pete says I'd like to be there for
a beer. Pete, if you'd come down, I would have
bought you a beer. When I say, when I said
I would have bought it for you, I would have
given you one on our tab.

Speaker 4 (01:12:43):
Oh eight one hundred and eighty ten eighty is our number.

Speaker 3 (01:12:45):
Australian correspondent Adam Peacock is with us and before we
get the chance to watch the All Black South Africa
Mark two tonight, it's episode two of Australia against Argentina
in Sydney. The Wallaby's getting home very late in the
first game in Townsville last weekend, and we've got another
afternoon kickoff in your hometown this afternoon.

Speaker 28 (01:13:05):
Yeah, hello at the throwback in Sydney. We always used
to play our Wallabies tests on our Saturday afternoon three o'clock.
They used to clear the decks for club rugby and
get it all done and play the game in the sego.
It was always so there's a throwback, but it's a
modern age convenience throwback because they want to avoid the.

Speaker 19 (01:13:28):
NRL Finals so they chucked it on at two pm. Now,
if you told me forty eight hours ago. This is
going to be a great occasion everything. I would have
doubted you because the pitch was flooded actually because we've
got one hundred mills on Thursday and alliances just their drainage.
You shot, but we've worken up to two successive days
including today. It's just brilliant sunshine. So I personally cannot

(01:13:48):
wait to see the app. Personally the atmosphere there because
it seems there's a lot of art Atinian backpackers in
Sydney and past only here they made a football like atmosphere.
It was like a river plate like a juniors game.
So this is going to be the same.

Speaker 3 (01:14:01):
It's going to be epic, Yeah, absolutely, and similarly here
of course, as you know with sad break and rugby
fans when they get the chance to face the All Blacks.
As I say, the Wallabies got there with a late
decision not to kick for goal and take the drawer
last week, but the more courageous decision to go for
the try which paid off. I get the feeling that
would have been met with a lot of positive acclaim.

(01:14:22):
Wouldn't it the chance to you know, to take the
draw or go for the win and you go for
the win.

Speaker 19 (01:14:26):
Correct, Yes, I remember, and you'd remember it too, fine,
it was. I remember watching it during the last World
Cup in guitar at the Football World.

Speaker 29 (01:14:35):
Cup twenty twenty two England, New Zealand Eddie Jones England's
there was a draw full time when and Eddie just
kicked it out and kicked the drawp.

Speaker 2 (01:14:47):
We don't do that.

Speaker 19 (01:14:48):
We don't do that the Southern Hemisphere. We don't do
any Jones anymore either.

Speaker 10 (01:14:53):
Everything that happened.

Speaker 19 (01:14:54):
But no, it's it is. You like to say it's
the Australian way, but it's like, come on, you're there
to win a game. And if you've got the opportunity
to win a game and go win it and a
draw would have like we're all walking away at home
in a game like this, you walk away, Is it
any different feeling like a lost? Probably not, so you
win the game. But obviously there's a lot to consider

(01:15:15):
and try and work out why there was the clos escape.
The fair reason why is Arseni and Argentina is a
damn good side. So yeah, we'll see. I've got a
feeling it's going to be a similar kind of margin
this afternoon Argentina will find away and they'll be lifted
by their away home crowd, if you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (01:15:31):
And two o'clock your time, four o'clock for us leading
into the Test match tonight. But as you say, the
reason it's an early kickoff is to avoid NRL finals. Well,
there's one game on this side of the ditch about
four o'clock your time, Warriors Panthers then Sharks Roosters to
follow the storm getting the job done against the Bulldogs
last night. What chance do you give our Warriors at
home to the Penrith Panthers A bit later on.

Speaker 19 (01:15:54):
Everyone over here is saying, oh, will penrithy been in
this great run? They'll win, but they're without their hooker.
And I don't care what you say the thirty thousand people.
I think it is there at home for Auckland yep,
for the wires. That plays a part. Jones, Fisher Harris.
You know he loves his former teammates, but he desperately

(01:16:16):
wants to beat them. So yeah, I'm just not totally
discounting the Warriors Penrits deservedly fair. What I do want
to know, Piney is maybe your listeners might know any
fireworks displays out hotel last night.

Speaker 3 (01:16:30):
Well, maybe they'll call, and I haven't heard of any
this morning or into the early afternoon. We'll get anybody
in that vicinity to let us know. He is similar
to when the All Whites went to Peru to try
and qualify for the World Cup back in twenty seventeen
and at a fireworks display outside their hotel.

Speaker 19 (01:16:48):
I'd be disappointed if there wasn't one.

Speaker 3 (01:16:50):
All right, we'll see if we can get the intel
on that. Hey, just speaking of football. Actually, in the
All White Soccer use played the Soccer Ashes over the
last week, Game two in Auckland on Tuesday night, and
the soccer Roos were worthy winners. Gee catching the eye
a couple of young guns Motor and Story baron Kunda
high excitement. I'm sure about these two and what they
might produce in a soccer Rooge jersey from here.

Speaker 19 (01:17:13):
Yeah, Tony Probavis doesn't just throw kids in and it's
happened a few times. Happened in this camp as well
with Noah Bodiche and Adrian Segacicchi. He gets them in
and he basically you're in the you're in the squad,
but you don't play for the first kind of time
you're in the squad, and yeah, nessar's kind of intriguing
relationship with national team coaches who have left him out

(01:17:34):
or not picked him or said he's not good enough
for the.

Speaker 2 (01:17:37):
He's good enough.

Speaker 19 (01:17:38):
He's he's our closest thing to anyone that's going to
get sold for forty million pounds from the Championship to
the Premier League. Stay for Watford at the moment, but
you guys are laced with Premier League talent and obviously
our closer bond isn't even closer now that Chris Wood
is going to be managed by Dogwin yep. But we'll
get to that. But yeah, it's just exciting because these

(01:17:58):
guys have gone over got their grounding in the A
League and now taking that I think I've talked about
it before. They take that first, they overseas like a
lot of your or and then they get they go
up the ladder like Jordy Pass has not up the
ladder to final. So now they've got the chance to
show it on the international serves. I just hope that
the tactics allow these players to show everyone what they
can do, because they can be unbelievably damaging in the

(01:18:20):
final third.

Speaker 3 (01:18:20):
Indeed, And yeah, let's finish with Ange pasta cooglu a
new gig Nottingham Forest including Chris Wood. Quite a nice
tasty first up assignment after the Emirates to pace Arsenal tonight.

Speaker 4 (01:18:31):
And what's the reaction being to Ange picking up a
new gig.

Speaker 29 (01:18:35):
Oh?

Speaker 19 (01:18:35):
Here in Australia, were just pump. We're over the moon
that he gets another shot. I get the skepticism over
in the UK that is this guy the right fifty
finished seventeen and that's been the narrative more than the
last guy. He coached a title winning side in the
Europa League in Tottenham. It's more about I finished seventeenth
in the Premier League, which I find odd because one

(01:18:58):
didn't go without the other. But yeah, we're absolutely pumps.
And we're doing a coverage on stands board over here
tonight on the party. What a day of sport Union
A finals, regul League finals. We've got Davis Cup over
here in town. You've got that the Premier League to
end things off, and you've got a World Athletic champions
You've started as well as enough to look at. But

(01:19:21):
all eyes will be fixed on ands tonight because it'll
happen when everything's pretty much done.

Speaker 6 (01:19:26):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (01:19:27):
These are the weekends that sports fans absolutely love. Great
to get your view on it, mate. We'll catch up
again same time next Satura. I hope you get some
sleep at some stage.

Speaker 19 (01:19:35):
Overrated, Thanks mate, over.

Speaker 3 (01:19:38):
Rated indeed, thanks mane that and be got our Australian
correspondent on the radio with us around this time every
Saturday afternoon. It really is a sports lover's buffet. Over
the next twelve hours or so, we've got quite a
bit of live sport actually to update you on in
terms of far Apartmer Cup and Bunning's in BC. Also,

(01:19:59):
they're just about to get underway at the World Trek
and Field Champs in Tokyo and qualifying for the men's
shot put that is just about to start. We've got
a couple of competitors, Tom Walsh and also Nick Palmer
are involved in qualifying. One fifty five New Zealand Times
was it about three minutes away from qualifying getting under

(01:20:20):
way and then the final if one or both make
it just after midnight tonight, just checking on what you
have to do. Twenty one thirty five or the best
twelve inside the best twelve. So you've got to throw
twenty one to thirty five or be inside the top twelve.
Nick Palmer has never thrown twenty one to thirty five.
His best is twenty meters thirty two. Tom Walstough has

(01:20:44):
a personal best of twenty two meters ninety so he
is well on track. We hope anyway to qualify automatically.
We'll wait and see and we'll keep our eyes peeled
for you on the Track and Field Champs. This afternoon
eight to two News Talk seb.

Speaker 1 (01:21:00):
Flave from Shiit twenty two and Wellington ahead of the
All Blacks v. South Africa. We can store with Jason
Pine and GJ. Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted home
builder on your home of sports used Talk.

Speaker 4 (01:21:13):
Senvy just gone five to two.

Speaker 3 (01:21:16):
Theresa says on text Pine he don't forget sale GP
second day overnight as well, where handily sitting in second
after the first day's racing. Must says, don't forget the
black ferns. I haven't forgotten the black ferns. Must absolutely not.
Stacy Waka is our guest after two o'clock ahead of
their quarterfinal against South Africa tonight just on the sale GP.

(01:21:37):
New Zealand ended the day in second place on the
leader board. This is in France. Four fleet races fifth, first,
third and fifth, one point behind opening day leaders Great Britain.
So we will watch with interest how they go. I mean, basically,
I'm not sure that where If you he didn't want
to sleep, you wouldn't have to. If you are a

(01:21:58):
sports fan, you could basically go from now right through
the nights. I'm looking very much forward to seeing how
Chris Wood and Nottingham forestco against Arsenal tonight. That comes
underwight eleven thirty New Zealand time, so it'll be another
case of double screening one and we'll have that. What
have the Black Ferns against South Africa at midnight? Earlier
on in the evening of course six o'clock Warriors the

(01:22:20):
Panthers underway at six and then all Blacks against South
Africa from seven. Speaking of the Warriors, how they're shaping
up ahead of tonight. Assistant coach Rich Agar is with
us straight after two o'clock and Warriors fans keen to
read your pulse as well. Can you beat the Panthers.

Speaker 1 (01:22:37):
Tonight they say you can't beat it on a good day,
but a storm is brewing in the capitol. The spring
Dog fans have arrived in force, loud, proud and draped
in green and gold. But this is all Black's territory,
and tonight the black wave will rise. Two rugby superpowers.

(01:23:02):
One is stary rivalry. Before we had to skuys Daddy
and braced for All Blacks y South Africa. We're live
on Wellington's Quaterfront where the passion is flowing at shar
twenty two, unpacking the analysis, the emotion and the build
up its weekend sports with Jason Pine on your home
of Sport News Talks ENV.

Speaker 4 (01:23:25):
Two o seven. Welcome into the show, Welcome back to
the show.

Speaker 3 (01:23:27):
We've been here. It's midday. Another hour of this and
then we'll hand over to Tim Beverett's for the weekend collective.

Speaker 4 (01:23:33):
We're back at.

Speaker 3 (01:23:34):
Six with build up to a five past seven kickoff,
full match commentary with Elliott Smith and Ross Bond and
then postmatch talk back through until ten. Looking forward very
much to that. We're going to pivot away this hour
from the rugby bit. Happy to take your calls on
anything Royce says, don't forget the Warriors. Heaven't forgotten the Warriors. Royce.

(01:23:56):
Rich Agar, assistant coach, standing by the chat to us
as we speak. Catherine says, piney, don't forget the golf.
We've got three playing at Wentworth. Hadn't forgotten the golf.
Goalfither Catherine, And yes, I was keeping eyes on Kazuma Kabori,
Daniel Hillier and Ryan Fox, all of who have made
the cut.

Speaker 4 (01:24:16):
Kazuma Kabori is in a tie.

Speaker 3 (01:24:17):
For sixteenth at six under the cards, six shots off
the lead, so he will definitely make the cut. He
squeezed in, in fact, more than squeezed and he bolted.
And Daniel Hillier should an even pass second round four
under for the tournament after a four under opening round.
He is in a tie for thirty fifth, and Ryan Fox,
who won this tournament last year, has snuck in the

(01:24:39):
cut is two under. Ryan Fox is at two under
after a three under round today to be two under
for the tournament. So all three Kiwis will play the weekend.
So thank you for your reminders. That's a good thing
about the show. If you do look like you're going
to forget something, then somebody will remind you which I love?
Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty is our number

(01:25:00):
nine nine two on text, rich Agar is I say
standing bye, Stacy Waka out of the Black Ferns as
well their quarter final tonight against Austria against South Africa.

Speaker 4 (01:25:11):
Just after midnight New Zealand time.

Speaker 3 (01:25:13):
Looking forward to seeing how they go after an unbeaten
run through Paul play. But as we always do at
around about this time, which is nine past two on
weekend sport, we like to bring you up to date
with some of the other things you may well have missed.
Let's start with the NFL. The Green Bay Packers have
improved to two wins from two, an impressive victory over

(01:25:35):
the Washington Commanders twenty seven eighteen.

Speaker 30 (01:25:40):
From the eighth to the outside night often touchdown tuber
Cram Slamba leap and it's a two posssion game again.

Speaker 3 (01:25:53):
Two cyclings Love Welter and Belgian sprinting star Jasper Phillipson
has added another win to his already very impressive resume.

Speaker 31 (01:26:03):
It's a really hard finish Phillipson. Now start to go
yaster Phillipson straight down.

Speaker 3 (01:26:09):
The barrier line.

Speaker 31 (01:26:10):
Pedison alongside him, but it's gonna be yaster. Phillipson three
wins in this year as well to fifty six win
of his career.

Speaker 3 (01:26:19):
Dane Jonas Binger Guard stays in the red jersey with
only two stages to go close to the home. In
the NPC. North Harbor's misery continues, falling by just a
solitary points to wake uttle last.

Speaker 20 (01:26:31):
Night, tolakee, lolakee, Oh beautiful lovel rather the back here
we go in the left dead corner.

Speaker 3 (01:26:37):
Robertson can he get the ball down?

Speaker 24 (01:26:39):
He's got the ball down and Waika to score a

Speaker 3 (01:28:48):
As we've just heard the Melbourne Storm through to a
preliminary final with a win over the Cannery Bulldogs last night.
The two elimination finals are tonight, starting of course six
o'clock Go Media Stadium as the Warriors take on the
Panthers water game. In prospect, we're very much looking forward
to Warriors assistant coach rich A Garas with us reach.

(01:29:11):
Thanks for taking the time on match day. How's the
week been? Have you intentionally tried to keep the week
the same as a regular season week or is that
really not possible with a knockout game at the end
of it.

Speaker 17 (01:29:24):
Yeah, good question, Jason, and thanks for having me on mate. Look,
I think there's no doubt we've we've kept the same
structure of the week, if you like, but it certainly
feels different energy and a different intensity about it. Obviously
we're in do our day football. We've had a couple
of guys coming back into training. We got all reviewed

(01:29:48):
done pretty much while we were in Manly. We worked
through the night so we could sort of put that
game to bed and as soon as we got on
the bus out of there, you know, all the focus
for us has been about this week and yeah, we've
looked pretty dialed in in training.

Speaker 3 (01:30:03):
There are guys in your team who have played finals football,
Sam quite a bit, none more so recently than, of
course James Fisher Hara who won the comp the last
four years with Penroth. How big he has influence been
in your team as you prepare this week, probably.

Speaker 17 (01:30:18):
Same as it has been all year. You know, I
think it's been widely I guess documented and said in
interviews about the type of leader that fishes. You know,
he doesn't get phased. He leads by his actions. I
think there's a great deal of comfort for the guys
around him that haven't played finals football to look around

(01:30:39):
and see him there and know that you know he's
been there, done it, won the T shirt and said
nothing just nothing phases James, and well he's been. He's
been an outstanding leader for us this year and it's
you know, we're in a position where we are now
that you know, he takes a lot of credit for

(01:31:00):
I guess the connection in the team. It's quite ironic.
I guess that we're coming up again again Penrith and
you know he's almost got the chance and the opportunity,
like we all have, hopefully to try and end that dynasty.

Speaker 3 (01:31:13):
So you come into the finals off the back of
consecutive losses, narrow losses, but losses none the less. How
do you make up for any lack of momentum as
you come into a must win match.

Speaker 17 (01:31:24):
Probably that it's just a new competition that we're in
due or die football. I certainly think home advantage and
our fans can play a big part of that. I
think it's a game that you know, we've got to
make sure that we start well and bring the crowd
into it. But yeah, I just think it's a new competition.
I think regardless of whether we would we would have

(01:31:45):
won all offs at the weekend, it wouldn't really have
affected our league position. Of course we would have liked
to win, but more importantly, I think we would have
liked to have come in on a little bit better performance.
But we said, I think, you know, we've got a
shot in the arm with a couple of guys coming
back into the team, important players in important positions.

Speaker 3 (01:32:03):
Yeah, and I'd like to ask about one of those
jacks and four calls back from his three game suspension.

Speaker 4 (01:32:09):
How big a boast to say to you?

Speaker 17 (01:32:11):
Well, big, I think, I think you know, when you're
talking about experience, and jack O can sort of go
a little bit unherlded. I think he's one of them
players that people will notice him when he makes mistakes,
but people won't notice him when he's doing sixteen sixty
five minutes straight as a front roller and you know,
churning the work right out that he does. But it's
just that experience too, I think when when obviously miss

(01:32:34):
Barnett got injured, to lose fish like we have a
couple of times, and then to lose Jackson, it's tremendous
experience for our young guys. But at the same time,
you know, you look at our packs sometimes and it
does lack you know, it certainly does lack experience, tetl
standards in very good stead moving forward down the track.

(01:32:55):
You know, all our young guys have had a fantastic
learning curve this year, you know, but at the end
of a long season in the playoffs like this, experience,
you know, experience does does really count for a lot.
So getting jack O back apart from his experience, but
in particular you know, the game time and the minutes

(01:33:16):
that he can play in the middle, you know, he's
a big plus for us.

Speaker 3 (01:33:21):
We're also guarded to see rock o'bierry injured again. Geez
had terrible luck this season, hasn't he? After just two
or three games back, k Caple has been named in
the centers. Why have you gone that way instead of
perhaps Chance Nichol Klukster who had a couple of games
there for you as well.

Speaker 17 (01:33:36):
Look, we think we've had some good performances with KP
in the center this year, and again, experience is one
that in a game like this, I think moving Charms
given the fact with Tayane is always you know, he's
always a really good option for us. But we just
like the way that Charms organizes his defensive line and

(01:33:59):
his capabilities and making some strong tackles on the you know,
certainly in tri line and try saving positions. He makes
a lot of tackles in the line, probably more than
any of the other fallback in the competition really and
is a really big body in that position and in
a game that you know, we probably feel, you know,
one of Penrish spense is there, I guess arm wrestle

(01:34:20):
ability and their ability to back you up down your
own ends. You know, chances is a guy that is
generally good for you know, a couple of hundred meters
a game and carries really strongly on the back end
of our set. So well, Cape He's played you know,
big games and high level games in that position. We
know you'll he'll lead our kick Chase you know, is
really comfortable having played there you know, many times before

(01:34:45):
and in some good wins for us this year. So yeah,
that's the way that we've gone.

Speaker 3 (01:34:49):
You mentioned the word unheralded before when actually had a
couple of guys who have played every game for you
this season. That's Marada, Neil Cordion, the second row in
Aaron Clark at Lock. They don't get a lot of headlines, Rich,
but how important are those two guys in terms of
the consistency they've brought to.

Speaker 12 (01:35:06):
You this year?

Speaker 17 (01:35:07):
Well, look, I think I start with Erin really, I
think Erin's been a super signing for us, he's a
player that when when we actually came up again, and
obviously it's been through the club and its systems before,
I think everybody knew he was terrific for Fella Eron
and you know, by his own admission, it didn't work
out for him first time around. He'd probably had to

(01:35:28):
take a few steps backward before he got the opportunity
to you know, become a you know, a genuine first grader.
And he did that via you know, via a couple
of clubs really, but I think it's when they'd come
up against them again Gold Coast, we felt, you know,
he always a player that played with a lot of punch.
He could read a book really well on on hitting

(01:35:48):
the advantage line and knowing what sort of lines to
run a powerful little thing, and being a former half back,
you know, a guy that got good hands as well.
I think for us, you know, I think people forget this.
We lost Saul Harrison and Dylan Locker right at the
start of the year. So the role that we envisaged
for errand uh, you know, expanded and expanded very quickly.

(01:36:12):
But I think his his home in New zial and
because his family around him is very settled. He's really
enjoyed his the club and his role at the club.
I think he's grown in confidence. I still think there's
a ceiling on his improvement, but yeah, he's been he's
been a terrific guy. We've probably overplayed him at times.
You know, he played eighty minutes last week and that's

(01:36:34):
just been cost the situation as has almost demanded it,
and we've we've had very little, very little alternatives to
spell him like we would at some point. But yeah,
I think erins Erin's not stop growing yet and there's
going to be more of him to come in as
worries shirt. Look, Maratha, I think there's been times this

(01:36:56):
year where we just need to get the ball in
Maratha's hands a little bit more. You know, he's he's
an absolute Sledgejammo when you give him an early ball,
and in situations where you know you need to create
more and some just finding Marata down the short side
or giving him an early ball and letting him try
and sort of run over the opposing halfback. It's proven

(01:37:18):
time and time again. You know, he's very dangerous close
to the opposition's line. You know, he can run really
strong inside shoulder lines and he's really good at fading
and changing his line late as well. And Marat as
a very low maintenance guy. Know, fuss about him. Just
ask him to do something and I will do it.

(01:37:38):
And you know, I think you forget when Marata is
a vastly experienced player. Now you know, he's played in
the Grand Pine and he's played Test football and he's
becoming a very senior leading voice within our you know,
within our group as well. He's not one of the
guys that is your classic. When he speaks, you best
listen to him. And yeah, we're we're a claimed that

(01:38:02):
always looks better the more reason the game.

Speaker 3 (01:38:05):
Well, Rich, what are you going to have to do
particularly well tonight to beat the Panthers?

Speaker 17 (01:38:10):
Yeah, that's a really good question. I think you know,
watching the Panthers play that they're the masters of the
long game, if you like, and playing the armrestle football,
and I think that's an area that you know, we're
going to have to be really really good in. I
feel I field, there's enough that we've seen throughout the

(01:38:30):
year to suggest there's some little chinks in there, if
you like. But the important thing for us is that
we trying to earn them. You know, we've we've got
to earn the right, I guess, to have a crack
in the right areas and that's where you know, that's
where the Planters really make work for it. I think
when it comes to big game football, they've probably got

(01:38:51):
two or three of the best big game players in
the competition, obviously Nathan Clear and Isaia, but doing Edwards
as a very very good player too. That's proven time
and time again on the big stage. You know, he
can put magnificent performances. So I think I think that
ability to get in those arm wrestles and come out

(01:39:13):
the other side and earn the right. But I also
think a big part of it for us, given we
know they'll being a good one, is our kicking game,
you know, is where we turn the ball over and
how we turn the ball over. We know we're gonna
have to be relatively mistake free, which is, you know,
something we're going to have to improve on the last
couple of weeks.

Speaker 10 (01:39:30):
But I think I think as we've got to, we've.

Speaker 17 (01:39:32):
Got a really clear plan. You know, we've trained well
around it this week, going out there and executing it
to a you know, to a very very high standard.
Is what's gonna you know, what's going to get us
this game.

Speaker 3 (01:39:46):
Thanks so much for your tour up against it on
match day, Rich all the beast and I made everybody's
behind you great Jason.

Speaker 17 (01:39:52):
I really appreciating mate.

Speaker 3 (01:39:53):
Now, good on your rich Rich. I got the assistant
coach of the Warriors just after six o'clock tonight. They'll
be on the way against the Panthers. Knockout football for
the Warriors. Look, I think I've said there's a number
of times on the show, if you'd offered sixth place
to Warriors fans at the start of the season, they
would have taken it. After that disastrous start in Vegas,

(01:40:14):
I think they would have bitten your hand off for it.
And here we are, sixth spot off the back of
thirteenth last season Finals football at GO Media Stadium packed
out this evening. I really think we can do it. Well,
I mean that's obvious we can do it. I really
think we will do it. Yes, they're coming off the
back of two losses, decide to aren't even in the

(01:40:36):
top eight for this season. But this Warrior's side, we
know what they can do on their night. I just
need tonight to be that night. How are you feeling?
Warriors fans? Happy to take a couple of calls or
your text predictions if you're too nervous to get on
the phone, Oh, eight hundred and eighty ten eighty ninety
two ninety two if you would prefer to send us

(01:40:58):
through a text, Just updating you on some live sport.
Great news from the World Track and Field Champs in
Tokyo where Tom Walsh has qualified automatically for tonight's shot
put final. You had to throw twenty one three five.
I think it was he threw twenty one seven four
Tom Walsh, so he has automatically qualified for the final.

Speaker 4 (01:41:18):
The other key we in the field is Nick Palmer.

Speaker 3 (01:41:22):
He has thrown twenty point one eight as his best
throw so far, so we'll keep eyes on him. But
Tom Walsh will definitely be in the final tonight. N
PC seven All now in the Battle of the Bays
in tod On It seven all Bay of Plenty and
Hawk's Bay.

Speaker 4 (01:41:37):
And just to quick check on weather conditions before we
go to the phones.

Speaker 3 (01:41:41):
Meant to be fine this evening in Wellington, norw Westerly
strong and exposed places at the moment it's gusting it
around twenty eight kilometers an hour. I mean that's not much,
is it? Certainly not for Walingtonians, not for Wellingtonians at all. Greg,
how are you feeling about tonight?

Speaker 17 (01:42:01):
Very nervous?

Speaker 3 (01:42:02):
Or the pause says everything? The pause that you took,
Greg before you answer the.

Speaker 9 (01:42:07):
Very nervous? And I once again had to compare the
game last night to what the Warriors have actually been
giving us in the last little while. I think both
of those teams that played last night with the Bold
rolled them easy, but then they probably would have rolled
a lot of teams easy as well. But we are

(01:42:28):
in the top eight. It was interesting to listen to
mister Agart talking. I could peel in his voice that
there was doubt when you were asking a few questions.
So that didn't sit too well with me. But I
just wanted to talk about Aaron Clark and Game Swisser Harris.

(01:42:52):
Now he he said about games Fecer Harris as being
you know, the leader, et cetera. Well, I would say
this year that Aaron Clark has probably played better than
James Fitzer Harris and also lead better than James Fisher Harris.
You know, that's a big call. But where I watched

(01:43:14):
the game and the workload that Aaron Clark does, and
I had my doubts at the beginning of a year
about Aaron. I think that James Fisher Harris meets the
lifts game. There has been, you know, times during the
year that I'll just say that he seemed to go missing. Yeah,

(01:43:37):
I've got my fingers and I toes my eyes crossed
for tonight because you're not a four time champion if
you're not a good team. So the Panthers have been
there for four years in a row. We we haven't,
so that big game experience is gonna see a lot

(01:44:02):
to get over for us. And I think the experience
of the Warriors, I said a couple of weeks back,
you know, not this year, but maybe next year.

Speaker 3 (01:44:12):
Yeah, all right, Greg, Hey, look, I don't mistake rich
Hagar's uh, you know, you picked up doubt there. I
think it's just an understated quality that he has. And
I think in the Warriors they never ride the highest
too high, of the low is too low. We as
fans do, of course, but they never do. Interesting about
Aaron Clark too, He's played every game, and I agree
he's been terrific. Greg, let's say for another big one

(01:44:32):
from him and from James Fisher Harris tonight. Jamie, are
you confident?

Speaker 32 (01:44:37):
Oh yeah, nervously confident. I mean I think portunly you'll
be at the stadium watching the Orbacks so so, I mean,
I'll try like it maybe the first half, but but yeah,
I think it's either going to be It can either
be a very close when for the Warriors or perhaps

(01:44:58):
a buy out to the Panthers's that's what's eving on
it anyway.

Speaker 3 (01:45:02):
Yeah, Jamie, I I feel like you're right. I think
if the Warrior is one, I can't see them winning
it going away. Having said that, though, mate, you know
what they're like when they when they get a roll
on and yes it's the Panther's a championship pedigree side,
but I don't think anybody stops the Warriors when they
really hit their straps, and we've seen that a few
times this season. I mean, i'd love to I'd love

(01:45:23):
to be like you, mate, down at the stadium tonight
watching when the All Blacks kick off and the Warriors
have a handy lead, because you and I will both
be checking obviously the score in the other game. But yeah,
I mate, enjoy enjoy the rugby tonight and keep your
eyes on the Warriors or your ears on it.

Speaker 6 (01:45:38):
Mate.

Speaker 3 (01:45:38):
I'll look out for you down at sky Stadium tonight.
Good to have you joining the show coming up two thirty.
You got to take a break then head into the
Black Ferns camp tonight they take on South Africa quarterfinal
of the Rugby World Cup.

Speaker 4 (01:45:51):
Stacey Waka going to join us after.

Speaker 1 (01:45:53):
This play from Shed twenty two in Wellington. It's Weekend
Sport with Jason Vine and GJ. Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's
most trusted home builder news dog.

Speaker 3 (01:46:05):
Senvy two thirty two on News Talks he'd beat trifecta tonight,
Piney Wars by four, All Blacks by three Black Ferns
by thirty. All right, we'll take that under advisement, Pony.
We my three sons and I religiously get together whenever
the Warriors are playing. We know the Aussies don't like
us and the refs can be biased, but we think
tonight is the night we love them. I love that text.

(01:46:28):
The Black Ferns meet South Africa in the quarterfinals of
the Rugby World Cup and exit tonight kickoff at midnight
New Zealand time. Let Dinger linking up on the outside,
Sirrenson McKee Jorjia Miller trying to get on the outside.

Speaker 12 (01:46:43):
Oh, Paul Bucket found.

Speaker 21 (01:46:45):
What have we just seen?

Speaker 17 (01:46:49):
What are the tries of.

Speaker 19 (01:46:50):
The world juff?

Speaker 3 (01:46:51):
Yeah, brilliant tried to wrap a forty nil win over
Ireland in the final Paul match. Black Ferns center Stacy
Waka is with us ahead of her milestone thirtieth test tonight. Stacy,
how happy of the players and coaching staff being with
your unbeaten run through pool play?

Speaker 33 (01:47:08):
Yeah, we're pretty sloked.

Speaker 24 (01:47:09):
There's a squad we've obviously built over these last three games.
Haven't put out the perfect so much yet, but we
have found some things that we can work on still,
which is exciting because we haven't really reached our peak
and there's definitely more potential in the squad.

Speaker 33 (01:47:23):
But have we all thought we've done so far? We
just we know we've more to gift.

Speaker 3 (01:47:27):
So in terms of those improvements and those growth areas,
anything in particular you've been focusing.

Speaker 24 (01:47:32):
On, Oh, I think for us, it's just execution of
our game plan at the right time in the game
and in the right parts.

Speaker 33 (01:47:40):
Of the field.

Speaker 24 (01:47:41):
Few little eras and penalties that I think the first
week we had like twenty five plus or something and
the end we're we sharpened that down to nine, only
nine against Island.

Speaker 33 (01:47:51):
So that was a massive growth area for us. And
we know that if we give those penalties.

Speaker 24 (01:47:57):
Away or we give silly eras away the other teams,
we let them into the game and you know, it
starts to become a chasing one instead of us kind
of being in control and full flow. So yeah, hopefully
little less of those in the next coming weeks and
then will be.

Speaker 18 (01:48:10):
Good to go.

Speaker 4 (01:48:11):
The game against Ireland forty nil.

Speaker 3 (01:48:13):
I think most people expected it to be, you know,
your toughest Paul game, but you really put on a
great performance. Were you as pleased with the nil as
you were with the forty that day?

Speaker 24 (01:48:23):
Yeah, Look, honestly, I think we're happy with the nil
more so than the forty. I think we could have
probably put a few more tries on the board in certain.

Speaker 33 (01:48:30):
Parts of the game, where like I said, we gave
way too many pettleties and we didn't have the ball
as such or as much in the second.

Speaker 24 (01:48:37):
Half, So yeah, pretty pleased with our defense. It's obviously
been alder on from the last two of the first
few POUL matches, so yeah, we'll keep grinding away at
that and hopefully we can give a few more donuts
to these next teams.

Speaker 3 (01:48:50):
How much do you expect the intensity to ramp up
now that we're at knockout time?

Speaker 33 (01:48:55):
Oh, it's nuts.

Speaker 24 (01:48:56):
It's going to ramp up, peeps, and one not only
is it lookout round, but to the pressure. South Africa
has never been in this position before, so they're excited.

Speaker 33 (01:49:05):
They've got a clarly nothing to lose.

Speaker 24 (01:49:07):
They're a really strong and physical team, so I expect
them to throw everything at us, which is fair enough.

Speaker 33 (01:49:14):
It's a big game in a big moment.

Speaker 24 (01:49:16):
But yeah, we've got some good plans up our sleeves,
so I can't wait to get out there and play.

Speaker 3 (01:49:21):
And I say that I've named a seven to one
bench split as well, Yeah, which I mean, man, it's
just like it's obviously something their men's team has done
to great effect as well in recent times. What do
you think that says about the way that they want
to play the game.

Speaker 24 (01:49:36):
Yeah, well, I mean it's not rocket science to know
that their forward's dominant team. If you watch their last
three matches, they love picking and going at the right.
They love using their big, strong forwards to get them
go forward and momentum. And they obviously have trust in
their backs when they need to. But it's heavily dominated
in the forwards.

Speaker 33 (01:49:54):
So that's what they want to do, right.

Speaker 24 (01:49:55):
They want to try and go through us, keep going
through us, keep going through us, and then recycle that
was their seven to one split.

Speaker 33 (01:50:01):
But hey, when I stop that, we've practiced little week.
We've seen all the footage that we need to see.
And yeah, as you say, bring it.

Speaker 3 (01:50:08):
On, good stuff, and I mean all things being equal,
as you're saying, for them, nothing to lose really never
been this far.

Speaker 4 (01:50:13):
They could just throw the kitchen sink at it.

Speaker 3 (01:50:15):
Nothing to lose for them from your point of view,
all things being equal, stay, so you should beat South Africa.
So how do you avoid any possible complacency?

Speaker 18 (01:50:24):
Yeah?

Speaker 33 (01:50:25):
Look, I think we've talked about that the last three weeks.
We can't be complacent in any situation.

Speaker 24 (01:50:31):
Every team that plays against US almost grows another arm
and a leg because the black jersey is so sacred
or is so special.

Speaker 33 (01:50:38):
And I've got a few.

Speaker 24 (01:50:39):
Team teammates, sorry, players in that team who have played
against on the World seven series, and they said.

Speaker 33 (01:50:45):
You know, we've always been the nation that they've looked
up to that have inspired them to want to be better.
So it's easy for us to kind of look at
it like, oh, this is their first time.

Speaker 24 (01:50:56):
But then where we're all I suppose humble and excited
players who just want to be better and everything that
we do, and so we'll never stay complacent and what
we have or what we've done.

Speaker 33 (01:51:07):
We're always finding ways to be better. It's the fours,
that's the backs and everything in our skill sets.

Speaker 24 (01:51:12):
So I'm pretty confident that the girls will will find
their superpower this weekend.

Speaker 3 (01:51:17):
So for you personally, you've been out of the Black
Ferns since the last Rugby World Cup sevens and obviously
Rugby League as well. How did you transition so seamlessly
back into fifteens when you returned in May of this year.

Speaker 33 (01:51:31):
I wouldn't say it was a seamless transition.

Speaker 18 (01:51:34):
I think.

Speaker 33 (01:51:36):
I think I did that. It's a lot of work.
I never really had ambitions to be here at first.

Speaker 24 (01:51:44):
If you asked me three years ago, I thought, man,
that's me done of fifteens. But obviously jump out opportunities
when I can, but say no when.

Speaker 33 (01:51:53):
This year came around.

Speaker 24 (01:51:54):
And for me it's easy physically to kind of transition
because you know, I'm fit, fas strong, whatever you need
to be in condition. It's more than mental mindset around
understand and learning new game plans, working with combinations and
connections with different teammates.

Speaker 33 (01:52:11):
Who will you know, we all come from different.

Speaker 24 (01:52:13):
Regions, so coming together in this fifteen seat up for
a World Cup is quite hard. The detail in the
game plan from the coaches is obviously very different to
some movies from last World Cup, so you've had to
put in a brit work behind the scenes. So obviously
get up to speed or learn everything and see all
these different pictures because you play seven's just play to
the space.

Speaker 33 (01:52:33):
There's a game plan, but not really you just catch
past run and then that's it.

Speaker 12 (01:52:38):
I love that.

Speaker 4 (01:52:39):
I I just want to ask you for a couple
of your teammates.

Speaker 3 (01:52:40):
You got a couple of the youngsters who are catching
the eye, Georgia Miller and Braxton Sorenson McGee man.

Speaker 4 (01:52:47):
How much energy have those two in particular brought to
the to the fifteenth environment.

Speaker 33 (01:52:52):
Yeah, well, actually they're both completely different people. So Brexas's
energy is very different.

Speaker 24 (01:52:58):
She's a bit more mellow and shell You obviously see
more in her actions than you do with her kind
of persona Georgia Malo on the other hand, it's a
bit loud.

Speaker 33 (01:53:07):
And a bit out there. She's very comfortable in their
own skin, which I love. But we do have a
lot of banter with her. She doesn't seem like she's
only twenty one either. It's like she's been there forever.
But it's really cool, it's real refreshing, it's real exciting.

Speaker 24 (01:53:21):
I mean, I'm glad they're on our team because the
flair and the school that they bring to our team
is absolutely massive.

Speaker 33 (01:53:27):
So yeah, it's causing them flow flourish in every single
way doing their thing on the fields.

Speaker 24 (01:53:33):
Obviously, real natural talent really gift the players, And yeah,
I'm happy for them and the marks they have stamped
so far under your company.

Speaker 3 (01:53:41):
Indeed, and just to finish Dacy your third World Cup,
of course, how much guidance have you found yourself giving
to some of the younger players, some of the players
who are at their first one.

Speaker 33 (01:53:52):
Yeah, I think honestly, it still goes both ways.

Speaker 24 (01:53:55):
Like, yes, it's my third Rearl Carpan, this is my
thirtieth test. It's taken ten years, so a little bit
of a few years to get there.

Speaker 33 (01:54:03):
But the confidence in these girls.

Speaker 24 (01:54:05):
Young days, it's awesome, Like I'll share what I share,
but most of the time they really know, so.

Speaker 33 (01:54:11):
It's technically quite cool.

Speaker 24 (01:54:12):
And then they share things like me and I'm like, oh, yeah,
it's cool that you see it this way. So that's
probably the culture that we've brought and we've made here.
As you know, everyone's been confident in themselves. Everyone has
a voice. Everyone's here for a reason, So why do
the old younger ones have to listen to old ones
or other way around? You know, as long as we
can collaborate and work in ways together, it be beneficial

(01:54:36):
for the whole team.

Speaker 33 (01:54:36):
I definitely think that's how we work these days.

Speaker 3 (01:54:39):
Well over here, we're all stocking up on the coffee
Stacey for the next three All the best things please, yeah,
all the best thing in South Africa in the first instance.

Speaker 4 (01:54:48):
Thanks so much for taking the time for a chat,
no worries.

Speaker 33 (01:54:51):
Thank you, and thank you for your early mornings. I
know it's hard and tough, but how you will put
on a good show, so stay with us.

Speaker 3 (01:54:59):
I We'll stay with you. Don't you worry about that, Stacey?
Thanks indeed, Stacey Walker from the Black Ferns to hit
at their quarter final on the Rugby World Cup tonight
just after midnight. New Zealand. Time is when that one
kicks off against South Africa, eighteen and a half away
from three. Time to play a sporting chance with the
Tab gonna offer you the chance of three bets short
evens all long. You decide which one you want. We'll

(01:55:20):
place a one hundred and fifty dollars bonus bet on
your behalf if it comes home. The winnings minus the
initial one fifty are yours. You've got to be over
eighteen if you are and want to play, Oh eight
hundred eighty ten eighty.

Speaker 1 (01:55:35):
Counting down to All Blacks v South Africa on your
home of sports. It's weekend Sports Lay from Shed twenty
two in Wellington with Jason Pinne and GJ. Gardner Holmes,
New Zealand's most trusted home builder, News Talk said, b
It's time for a sporting chance thanks to Tab yes,

(01:55:56):
it is at two forty five.

Speaker 3 (01:55:58):
So I've got a one hundred and fifty dollars bonus
bet grants. I'm gonna give it to you, and then
you have to decide which of the three options you're
gonna bet on, A short, an even or a longs.

Speaker 4 (01:56:08):
That's pretty easy to understand.

Speaker 10 (01:56:10):
Is it?

Speaker 19 (01:56:12):
Yeah?

Speaker 12 (01:56:12):
I think so?

Speaker 3 (01:56:13):
Okay, cut the hesitation in your voice. The hesitation didn't
fill me with confidence. But okay, mate, I'll give you
the three options. You decide which one you're on you're want, okay, yep.
The short option, the All Black spring Box are my
main screen Tonight special. It's the All Blacks to win.
At a dollar fifty, you would collect seventy five dollars.

(01:56:36):
That's the short option. The evens, the evens the Warriors
Panthers are my main screen special. The Warrior is to win.
It's paying three dollars twenty. You would collect three hundred
and thirty dollars. If the Warriors win, that's your evens
and you're long. The Wallabies v. Pumas are my main

(01:56:59):
screen special. Poomers to win thirteen plus paying six to fifty.
Your winnings eight hundred and twenty five. So just to recap,
the All Blacks to beat the spring Box, you would
get seventy five dollars. The Warriors to beat the Panthers
you would get three hundred and thirty dollars. The Wallabies, sorry,
the Pumas to beat the Wallabies Argentina to win thirteen

(01:57:22):
plus you would collect eight hundred and twenty five. Which
one do you like, Grunt.

Speaker 18 (01:57:30):
Than I like the idea of the Pumas the Audies.

Speaker 3 (01:57:34):
You like the idea by thirty? It have to be
by thirteen plus.

Speaker 10 (01:57:38):
Of thirteen plus, yes, okay, Now I'll go with you
all blacks.

Speaker 6 (01:57:44):
I'll go this.

Speaker 4 (01:57:46):
Okay, you'll take the money.

Speaker 3 (01:57:48):
Well, I think that's they have to win obviously, all right,
so all Blacks to win, it's paying the dollar fifty. Yeah,
we placed the bet once we take away the one
fifty bonus bet. Still a nice tidy seventy five dollars
hitting your way.

Speaker 4 (01:57:59):
Grunt, awesome, thanks, Biny No, good on you mate, Thanks.

Speaker 3 (01:58:03):
For calling, and just stay there for a bit and
he's going to make sure he's got all your details
and we'll place the bet before you.

Speaker 4 (01:58:07):
Keep our fingers crossed. If you get a result.

Speaker 3 (01:58:09):
The winnings will be all yours. We'll do it again
next week thanks to our mates at the tab and
as always, please bet responsibly. We're coming towards the end
of our time here at Shed twenty two, but time
for one more interview and it's a great pleasure to
welcome into the show. Former Springbok Now TV Rugby analyst
with Supersport, Han Yanni Shimangi, Han Yanni, Let's look back

(01:58:33):
to last week.

Speaker 4 (01:58:34):
What did you make of the spring Box performance at
Eden Park.

Speaker 18 (01:58:37):
It's a team that will probably look at at the performance.
They created a lot.

Speaker 14 (01:58:41):
They had I think twelve or thirteen twenty two meter entries,
but they could just don't convert that pressure, so it
was sort of what I want to call it messy.
And when they got to the region, which was compounding areas,
it would be a missed line out to be you know,
they win the line up and the wall get dropped
in the kit going, then there'll be a knock on

(01:59:02):
or some pressure there. But the BWA Zealand did well
to disrupt the spring Box and probably seven points is
probably a fair reflection of the game really at the
end in.

Speaker 18 (01:59:10):
Terms of the new Zealand victory.

Speaker 14 (01:59:11):
Eden Park was always going to be a difficult place
to win, but to win, they need to put up
your best performance, and the spring Box was slightly all collor.

Speaker 4 (01:59:20):
How desperate then will they be to produce a big
reaction tonight?

Speaker 18 (01:59:25):
It'll be desperate.

Speaker 14 (01:59:25):
Look, it's a similar to you guys, every time you
put on the spring Box chers, every time they are not,
there is an expectation to deliver excellence in New Zealand.
It's the greatest library. It's it's a harder place to win,
and when you're especial, it's a it's you know, we
always remember the wins we have in New Zealand against
New Zealand. We informed the truck last year, but none
of them were in New Zealand. And the team will

(01:59:46):
be desperate together results here.

Speaker 3 (01:59:48):
Obviously a lot of hype around last weekend's game, and
there is tonight as well. But with the Eden Park record,
the undefeated record, all of the you know, the emotion
that was wrapped around last week, can you see the
spring Box getting up again in similar fashion for the
game tonight.

Speaker 14 (02:00:02):
Yeah, they'll get up and purely because also we we
take this quite a bit so there's a lot of
internal competition within the squad, which means guys will want
to perform and put the big foot forward and that
that's good for the spring books.

Speaker 18 (02:00:15):
But the reality is it's it's you know, it's a
Dorby game.

Speaker 14 (02:00:19):
It's it's a massive rivalry and don't get up for
they They've never not been up for it, you know.
And I don't think the gap between the two teams
is that big, to be honest with you. And there's
plenty of South Africans, as we said, stand here, I'm
watching the guys walking into the team bus and there's
loads of South Africans just taking pictures here, so they
understand what's required to understand that, you know, in front

(02:00:39):
of them, and it's something that they're always embrace.

Speaker 3 (02:00:42):
What have you made of the raft of changes Rassi
Erasthmus has made to the side for tonight.

Speaker 18 (02:00:48):
Well, they're good, they're good.

Speaker 14 (02:00:49):
Look, we have rotated a bitch, I mean, such a
fun working from Missoulia, played probably ten years Sea Games
last year and everyone thought he's going to get introduced
into the springball team.

Speaker 18 (02:00:57):
We weren't start against New Zealand and look what's happened.

Speaker 14 (02:01:00):
Now he started last year and he's probably the best
young africoming talent in the world. Rust and he says, yeah,
two Calen made the Springboks. I think there's a three
year old against Australia which we won. So it's as
much as it's a lot of changes. These guys have
been around the block and they know what to do.

Speaker 18 (02:01:18):
It's exciting. Was a infant book at.

Speaker 14 (02:01:20):
The New Zealanders wouldn't seen a lot about it, face
with the starts that they did, spared age groups to
ut So he's a very good player and if he's
given a little bit of space and he's staff is
a big way.

Speaker 3 (02:01:29):
Did you think that he might have gone in one
or both tests Russie with a six to two bench
split given how effective that was last year in both
Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Speaker 14 (02:01:39):
Yeah, some of the backs don't have a lot of minutes.
I think that's why he couldn't go with we went
five to three. But Chester Hazen can come in a
center and flame. So this week you can either look
at it as the five to three or a hybrid
sixth tree.

Speaker 18 (02:01:51):
So that's what he's done this week. Oh guess name
was a.

Speaker 14 (02:01:54):
Big one because as a lot he's quite a bigger
but a massive offload. It's almost like a basketball play
in terms of this fall floating game.

Speaker 18 (02:02:01):
They can get the pull away within context, so it's
going to be an exciting game.

Speaker 3 (02:02:05):
Do you think the spring Box will continue the aerial
assault they employed last weekend?

Speaker 18 (02:02:09):
I think the condition sort of detected that.

Speaker 14 (02:02:13):
I thought Christie kicked probably the most and he was good,
so you've got to adapt to the conditions.

Speaker 18 (02:02:18):
You could see that midfield area a lot of the
teams are kicking.

Speaker 14 (02:02:22):
I think what you might maybe see from both teams
as variation and kicking instead of kicking from nine, kicked
from ten, kick from twelve, kicked from fifteen, And try
to isolate someone from the VAC and us.

Speaker 3 (02:02:32):
That this is a very experienced South African side in
many areas, other areas it's not quite so experienced. How
many of the players involved in the spring Box squad
now do you expect to not be there in a
couple of years at the next Rugby World Cup.

Speaker 14 (02:02:48):
It's difficult to tell because you can't do you look
at the performance, not the age of the playing. So
if you look at a guy like what's there for
example two thousand and three, people see it's two old
two thousand and seven ended up winning the worlddown you know,
so I think what the chapter on months for spiders
listen it did you play well old enough?

Speaker 18 (02:03:07):
It actually does in.

Speaker 3 (02:03:09):
Yeah, good stuff, hen Yanni, how good to leave it there, mate,
Thanks for joining us. Han Yanni Shamangi, former Springbok and
