President Donald Trump’s administration said it will soon resume collections on defaulted student loans for the first time in five years. The office of Federal Student Aid may start taking funds out of borrowers' tax refunds, Social Security benefits and — eventually — paychecks.

The Department of Education says borrowers in default should start making monthly payments or enroll in an income-driven repayment plan.

MPR News host Angela Davis and her guests talk about how the change could affect millions of borrowers.

Guests:

  • Chris Farrell is a senior economics contributor for MPR News and Marketplace.
  • Brittany Tweed is the director of financial aid for Metro State University.
