soak it all in. We hityou with the good and then we
hit you with the bad, sowe can probably go ahead and skip the
good, bad and the ugly lateron. Everything I think that could have
gone wrong went wrong in order forthe Astros to find their way to having

zero wins heading into the second seriesof the season. Three games that obviously
were very close, one game thatcertainly was not for starting pitchers that all
things considered, in their opening startsof the season, we're certainly capable of
earning wins in them. We thoughtframbers would be the worst, and honestly
it probably was. Back to backstarts from Javier and Brown where neither gave

up earned runs. JP Frantz wasbad lucked to the tune of three runs
allowed before he stepped aside during thatsixth inning, and then their bullpens said,
how about some BP Yankees, Aloss for Presley, a loss for
a Brew, A loss for haterall in the opening weekend of the season,

all at the hands of the JuanSoto led New York Yankees. Well,
that guy's been a choed since hewas in Washington, so nothing's really
changed. I mean, he wentout to San Diego for a spell and
now he's wearing pen stripes or willbe. We heard that a million times
over the weekend. Well he'll betrackromantics, Yeah, basically because they were
just plain gray. Right. Well, that's the Wexler side of the situation.

I like it. That's being veryaccurate. Well, you know if
it was a national broadcast on Saturday, Well, it was a national broadcast
on Friday too, if you hadApple. But you could have your cake
and eat it too if you hadApple. That's true, that's true.
But Saturday when they were on Fox, it's not. I'm not I'm easing
my way into the week. There'sa lot of rage built up here,

as many of you know that followme on social media. I just like
I was. You know, youheard me on Friday, came into the
auxiliary booth that Michael k was notusing that night for our show Friday,
talked to Blummer on the phone hada nice broadcast. Opening Day was great.
They came up a little short.Baseball is here, absolutely, and

you know, I it sucked,but oh and twos and two as four
game series. You know whatever,it's gonna be fine. Saturday happens.
Saturday was the rather lop side ofaffair after Hunter Brown left, and it
got lopsided very quickly for the samereasons it got lot you know, it
got out of hand the last twonights. Just this one was a little
bit more pronounced. And it wasat that point where I really began to

channel my inner Rob Reiner when inWolf of Wall Street he got interrupted watching
the equalizer, and I just itwas at that point, and I even
texted somebody. I said, well, I'm like, it's it's it's gotten
to the point where it's gotten outof hand, and now my family,
God, please tell me something inthe theater. As the Astros game become

became unraveled on Saturday to the pointwhere and again this is this is the
night before Easter. There's joyous occasionsin the morning with the little One,
the lily, blasphemy, what Iasked to read Easter and Juan Soto this
weekend probably probably. I mean,my little guys five and I'm trying to

hold it together. And he's gotEaster eggs to hunt in the morning,
and we're going over to Constellation Feelto do it and it's gonna be a
great And I absolutely now he didn'treally understand what was going on. I
closed the door, Like Teresa comesin to ask me a question, and
she sees the score and she knowswhat the score was not, you know,

two minutes before that, and shejust knows. You just see it.
Slowly closes the door, walks away. I hear them out in the
kitchen, and I just lost it. I'm just like, are we really
doing this? Are we really talkingabout a situation where you spent ninety five
million on a closer you can't evenget to and then when you do finally

get to him, he loses thegame too. So that's where I was
at. Yeah, I've calmed downnow a little bit. Yeah, not
Jess Reege's I Yeah, George Springer'sback. Welcome back, George. I'm
sure he'll hit five bombs off ofthis bullpen that sucks. It's just incredible
to me that you you feel Andagain, I'm gonna do this. I'm

don't care. Jeff Bagwell absolutely sucksas a general manager. Really, yes,
really, because the two guys thathe was in charge of signing are

about your stupid postseason home runs.They didn't win a World Series with you

me is that, for the majorityof your tenure here, making nineteen and

every game, thank god, becauseif he did, that'd be a giant

games into the season. They gota good lineup. They're probably not this

bad, and the Yankees probably aren'tthis good. It doesn't do any It
doesn't do me any good. Afterwhat I said, it was death by
a thousand cuts this weekend. Youhad a lead in every single game.
You got a lead in every game. Wex you didn't that is that not

That's right. This is what happenswhen I'm multitasking with a child in
Easter and I can't even enjoy itbecause the Astros suck on opening weekend for
four straight days. This would havebeen bad enough if it was a three
game series, but no, wegot to hear about the Yankees and how
they're gonna go to the World Seriesnow because they swept the Astros in Houston

the first four games of the season. That was my favorite part their World
series. They had maybe a littlesaving grace for you, the Nationals,
the Yaki to Yakers, not theWashingtons. They were talking about the Yankees
Astros pondering this very important thought fromyesterday's game, basically saying this, and
I'm paraphrasing, is Aaron Judge soawful that they should have intentionally walked Wan

Soto in the ninth inning to getto him? And I put out some
of the offals and some of thegoods the numbers from this weekend's four game
series. Aaron Judge was totally invisible. The Astros owned him again, and
yet they couldn't win a single gamebecause the guy at the end of the
lineup we haven't mentioned, but youheard in the highlights Cabrera was killing them

and the guy in front of AaronJudge, who might see a few gooder
pitches if because of the presence ofJudge, But I don't know about that.
I think Guan Soto is what JuanSoto is. And the good news
is I don't know that there isany You don't have to see this team
but one more series. I don'teven think people realized what four wins by

the Yankees did. If it mightnot matter at any point, but it
certainly could come into play. LateSeptember, the Yankees just won the season
series against the Astros by winning fourof seven games in the first four opportunities,
the opportunity to whisk it all away, start all over again, do

Jays. But among the topics wewill not be discussing. What's the shortest

was absolutely jam packed, would havebeen more packed if not for the injury

for Jamal shed on Friday night.I don't think there's any question they beat
Duke. I guess it's a littleunfair to say what would happen against NC
State, But boy would that havebeen fun. Yesterday four days of golf
over at the Houston Open, theTexas Children's Houston Open, a memorial Park
golf cars, and it basically camedown to the very last, somewhat lengthy

putt of Scotti Scheffler. All hehad to do was tap it in a
very makeable putt and they would haveneeded extra holes to determine who the twenty
twenty four champion was. But hemissed and that essentially ended the tournament.
Roughnecks couldn't even get a win intheir first game over Rice Stadium yesterday,
and the winning streak for yours HoustonRockets came to a close last night at

Toyota Center at the hands of oneof the teams in Texas. We despise
they both are there, but thisone happened to be Antonio. All that
on our plates for another eleven segmentsof excellence. Here on a Monday edition

Sports Talk seven ninety. I can'tsay what I was calling this weekend on
an FCUC regulated station. Well,let's just put it this way, if
you were a Houston sports fan,with the exception of and again, even
the win the Rockets got on Fridaynight, they had to like it was

the worst first quarter they probably playedthe entire season. Thirteen points. Yeah,
they just could not put the ballin the basket. They were super
sloppy, but they only allowed twentythree. Yeah, yeesh, suck Except
for John Collins, who had acareer game. I don't understand why people
have that issue. Like, he'sa really good player. It's a total
waste of his time to be inUtah. It's I can't believe they kept
him. That's the whole reason toget players like that. But when you
stink, you move them because they'regood. But of like, the Jazz

had like zero threes except for JohnCollins. Me and Colin Sexton are their
two good players, and they scoredall their points. Yeah, Jordan Clarkson
was out obviously. The guy namedLaurie was out too, and he dropped
fifty on the Rockets last year,so you figure, okay, And I
honestly think the Rockets showed up andthought they were just going to roll over
and die because the Rockets were basicallyon the floor in the building. Even

when they came back in the secondquarter, their utah wouldn't go away.
It's three quarters and to get everythingthey had out of him and get away
with a one point win. Andthis was fresh off the win. They
had an OKC and for all intentsand purposes, it was a four point
win. They had a garbage threepointer with point three remaining. I didn't
count. Rockets had to throw itin after I know, I know.
And if you had somehow screwed thatup, if you threw it at your

own rim and they tipped it in, that's the only way it would be
real. Because of Derek Fisher.Yeah no, but yesterday's game, I
don't know, there was definitely somethingthey could do, and not that we're
going to go too detailed into.It's pretty simple, take the ball out
of his hands. Maybe at somepoint, well here's the problem. Amy
Udoka decided this was the way we'regonna play it, and as things continued,
they never you know, went Theonly time they double teamed Luca was

the fourth quarter. The only quarterhe didn't score in also the only quarter
he should not have been playing in, but he did. Uh clearly trying
to get fifty. I couldn't tellif he was trying to get fifty or
trying to get the triple double He'sgonna get passing the ball. Now here's
how I knew. Uh, Well, Kyrie kept taking all of his shots
of making them. Kyrie was good. He was for the second half.
He sucked in the first half,but he didn't do anything. But in
half he just kind of hung outand watched Luca do. Look at thirty

two points in the first half.He hit five of seven from long range.
He had I believe eight rebounds thatwas in the He had five of
seven eight boards for assists in thefirst quarter. Yeah, he had a
an entire game's worth in the firsthalf, like an elite NBA player stat
line at halftime, and I'm like, this is not good. I mean,

you knew he was good, youknew he could do this, But
here is the problem. And Itold you this. I believe after the
game, you and Alvin and Iwere briefly talking about this last night.
It was clear from the tip thatwas botched because they threw it to Dallas.
I've never understood we are in twentytwenty four, why can't we get
Wi Fi that works in that building, And why can't we get an NBA

official to not throw the ball upwhen he's the most unathletic human on the
entire floor to two guys that aretwice his size. And that's the best
way that we can figure out howto fairly get the ball up for grabs.
On the opening tip, I likewhen we point out sports in game
problems and then we follow up witha solution. The ball should be dropped

exactly from the sky at Toyota Centercurrently they have a jumbo Tron. It
should be outfitted with a ball holster. Every holds onto the ball until it's
time for it to be dropped anddown it comes. Now, technically it's
going to fall in the same spotevery time, isn't it just the time
your jump? I mean, I'mnot even like and you know you think
it'll hurt their hands coming from usuallysixty feet up above them. Well,

I looked at Adrian Chavalia next tome, the Spanish. Now, I
said, did no one else seethat? Like? The ball went rogue
towards the MAVs player? I can'tit was it, Daniel, what's the
graphers? The guy who jumps centerfor the starting lineup. It basically looked
like the official lobbed it to hishead. It's funny because on well,
not funny, but it happens thisway. Players get called for fouls on

the jump every once in a while. It happened. And yeah, some
of the rockets for jumping into theguy holding an arm not being in the
proper position. Even guys around thecircle you need to move. But it's
okay for an official to be awfulat it, right, Well, it's
okay for an NBA did it wrong. Let's do it again. How about

right then and there the game wasover? The curtains for the Rockets,

When Amen Thompson was given Jalen Green'sfoul for number two and he went to
the bench because, believe it ornot, And I'm not saying that he
would have stopped him. I'm notsaying the game would have gone any better.
The Luca stopper. Well, thefirst two times they matched up one

on one, Amen Thompson's length andathleticism made him miss his shots. And
Amen Thompson was clearly you could tellthat was emy Udoka's plan. Put this
huge, long, athletic big ontheir best player and take your chances.
And it was working for the mostpart until he went to the bench,
went to the bench less than threeminutes into the game. Well, if

you look at the replay, though, this is my problem with this,
it was clear from every angle youwatch Jalen Green hit him on the shoulder.
You could actually see his skin move. So it was on the Rockets
because they didn't challenge. Well,yeah, I mean why not, No,
why not on the team? Theyshouldn't have to waste their challenges to

fix obvious calls. But the problemis that that's that is the problem.
They shouldn't have to NBA teams,well, they'd have to deal with the
dregs of society that are NBA officials. I had little to do with the
outcome of the game. In myopinion, that certainly was a play that
could swing things. Help. No, it did not help. The Rockets
didn't help themselves either. They couldn'thit a shot, they couldn't stop Luca,

and the few times it looked likethey might be putting a run together,
the MAVs answered with one of theirown. If you think I'm bringing
this up because I don't want totalk about the disaster that was the Astros,
you are absolutely right. In segmenttwo of our show, yeah absolutely,
we really. Obviously we haven't justgone full guns blazing on the things
we would like to see done differently, because that's what matters now. It
doesn't matter what they did over thefirst four games matters. What can be

done over the next one fifty eightstarting tonight one fifty eight. They've got
one hundred and fifty eight games tomake up for this deficit they now face
at zero to four in a divisionwhere not even the A's are winless,
just them. The only team thatis also winless is the terrible White Sox,

catchers were very good offensively, eighthits, Yeah, I'm so glad,
and I'm definitely gonna thank Dusty Baker, which we'll get to him by the
way, because he's ways way toomuch on my timeline this weekend for my
taste. But I love that DustyBaker told us all, yeah, you'll
thank me. The city will thankme for not playing him. He was
awesome this weekend. No, hedidn't drive in runs like everyone else in

the lineup, which he should have. I'm saying. When when it was
time for you know, clutch geneto activate, pretty much nobody did it,
or they were robbed or other stupidthings happened. But yaner Diez is
going to be fine and should havebeen playing wait more than he did last

Well, I think the winless WhiteSox, the winless Astros, the
winless Mets, the winless Marlins.Boy, those are the only four teams
that emerge from Thursday through Sunday withouta dove, and fifty percent of those

teams are paying a lot of moneyto not have a win. Mets did
pair down their payroll a little bitafter they decided to not pay to rehab.

forward for Houston. If it isreal to push the panic button, if
there are signs of something much morenegative than just well, hey, they
lost four games. If I wouldhave told you that the Astros are gonna
have a four game losing streak intwenty twenty four, you'd have said,

have is a five gamer coming?Is an eight gamer coming? Is more

If you weren't aware of that,if you didn't know about last year,
if all that happened they just theylost four games. I mean,
check, it didn't seem like theygot shut out four straight days. They
couldn't. I mean, now,granted, they had almost no pop because

after Jake Myers took Nestor Cortes deepin the second of the thirty six innings
that they played, they didn't hitanother home run. But I don't think
anything that I saw this week andwas ah, the stupid batters eye nonsense
needs to be brought back up again, which, by the way, is
unchanged, looks the same as itdid when they altered it last year.
I don't really think that has anythingto do with it. I don't know

if they don't feel good about comingup to bat in the bottom of the
ninth, they certainly acted like theyfeel fine, considering a runner was thrown
out after a three hit ninth inningat home plate, which would have tied
the game. The next day,they had multiple opportunities, with all three
of the hitters that came up almostdoing the job. I know this,
Altuve hit one down the line thatno name third baseman snagel, and then

Tucker sliced one to what looked likeAndrew bennettendi out there in left field.
And the game was over. Dome a favor because I know you know
this number right off the top ofyour head because you're a numbers guy.
How many men did they leave onbase over the four game weekend? Well,
I actually think usually you know,the box score left on base versus
the individual players left on base sometimesthey actually, I think there's a lot

of value in that other number thatteam fouls versus fouls in the NBA.
Not quite, but why can't benoteworthy when someone goes over for four and
they came up with runners on secondand third ones, and they came with
the bases loaded once they came upwith runners on you know, first and
seid it adds up and for theteam you could only lead three runners left
three runners on base per inning.The batting average runners in scoring position was

poor, clearly, uh but severalyou know, one hit for sure,
the hit that Tucker got to notto drive in du Bond. That was
a hit with a runner and scoringbecause the ninth inning of a one run
game they sent him. I don'teven disagree with the send. I also
don't disagree with the call. Ithink they got it right on the field
and after review Unfortunately, they justnot only didn't score that run. The

very next batter is your clean uphitter. It's Alex Bregman, and he
hit a ball well over ninety fiveexit velo and right to the shortstop.
And are we done with Jordan battingin the two hole yet? That's that's
the next thing, Okay. Now, I'd actually like to address that,
okay. And I was talking tosomebody last night about it in between ball
bouncing through nets. Yeah, somethinglike that. I as we talked about

it over the course of spring training. Initially you had, you know,
Tucker and Bregman and Alvarez batting ina little different order than they ended up
going into the season with because hedid not have Tucker immediately behind him throughout,
but decided to go that way.Altuve, Alvarez, Tucker, Bregman,
So essentially everybody but Altuve is kindof batting in an unfamiliar place.

If you believe in that stuff,and I think it's hard to not give
it at least a little credence.Players talk about it all the time,
being comfort in the comfort zone.And I mentioned that I was talking about
at the Rockets game, because specificallylast night was the twelfth consecutive game,
not for me, but for Calvin, where I'll ask him, all right,
Calvin, what are your keys tothe game, and he'll say,

if it ain't broke, don't fixit any run. He actually did run
the same set of keys to victoryfor the Rockets for twelve consecutive games,
and this is the first time theydid not win. So if what has
been working for the Astros in thepast, I mean, I'm not a
verse to change. I'm not averse to listening to numbers. I'm not
averse to trying new things. I'mnot trying averse to trying to take advantage

of it. But there's only liketwenty more at bats twenty five maybe thirty
more at bats for every spot inthe batting order over the course of an
entire season. A couple of AB'sa month, little less than one ab
a week is what you're getting extrafrom Alvarez by batting him second instead of
third, which I think is thereason for it. I don't have any

problem with batting the two lefties backto back, but knowing what Alex Bregman
is best at is not what thetwo guys batting in front of him now
are best at he's best at workingcounts and having a pretty good on base
percentage regardless of his batting average.Because he takes a lot of walks,
he forces Pictures to throw strikes,and then they're also forced to throw strikes
because look who's waiting. Alvarez andTucker Bregman should be batting second. That's

(24:27):
where he belongs in this lineup,both behind al Tuve and in front of
the other two. Then I wouldlean on the same thing I just ran
through for having Alvarez higher. Idon't want to bat him forth because that's
one fewer at bat ian. Whenyou take two spots in the order,
that does start to decrease the numberof opportunities. So yeah, Alvarez third
and Tucker fourth, Jose Abray shouldbe in the five holes zero times over

the next one hundred and fifty eightgames. And I hope that actually happens.
And the last thing about all that, I brought it up during camp
and it still holds true. JakeMyers homeward in his very first at bat.
Now, he didn't bat ninth everygame, but he didn't. He
didn't have a hit the rest ofthe weekend. Jerey mcpaina had a nice
enough start to the season when hewasn't hitting into double plays, he had
six hits. But you're turning thetop of your order into the meat of

your order. How many times agame with the eight and nine hole hitters
as your leadoff guys. It's awaste if they're never getting on base,
because then Alvarez is always batting withoutthe traffic right rather having bat in back
of two plus hitters. Was theyeah, which was the argument for why

you don't put him in that twohole. That is I'm glad you brought.
Not the reason they lost four timesthis weekend. No, there's a
there's a variety of reasons. Butsince we're on the subject that brings,
that's that's a good right reminder ofall of the things I want to go
ahead and check off the list fromlast year that I don't need to see.

release him tomorrow and I wouldn't careand no one else. We can't talk

Yet No nobody misses him Nobody becauseJoe Aspota lost his first four games
as manager for a variety of reasons, but hardly any of them were because
Joe Aspota made bad decisions. Didhe make some bad decisions? Of course,
Stop pitching the guys we were absolutelyfawning over and obrall you Presley and
Hater. Stop using them. Stopthrowing them out there. Joe, what

are you doing? Stop using yourbest relievers? Like who's saying that?
I mean nobody, nobody, Nobodymissed again everything he did, and it
happens to every manager, certainly everymanager has been through here the last ten
years, AJ, Dusty and nowJoe, even though it's only been four
games. Over those four games,he maybe made fifteen to twenty decisions.
After the lineup was put together andthey all work over and over and over

and over. Dusty Baker would havedone over the course of the four game
weekend that would have changed so much. It's a completely unnecessary topic. It's
complete cop out because you like you'remad. I get it, I'm mad.
