Two lifelong Houston sports guys named AdamTalking Your Teams series Adam Clinton and Adam
Wexler are d A team A team? You know what that music means.
We continue our program as it washeading into the five o'clock hour, a

(00:24):
little bit different than most of thetime during the week. We will have
time to talk quite a bit offootball. It is night one of the
NFL Draft. I took the libertiesof taking the Texans. Hey, it's
draft day graphic that they sent outon their social media today. Copy that
over and send it out myself witha little asterisk attached to it that said
Panthers, Browns and Texans do notcurrently hold a pick in tonight's first round,

(00:46):
but we shall see. So yes, some football conversation is on the
horizon in regards to both the Texans. Wait and see as they old picks
forty two to fifty nine and eightysix tomorrow. Another six selections coming after
that. But Trader Nick will almostassuredly make several, probably four to five
moves between now and Sunday, andwe'll see what that all turns into.

(01:08):
But we'll have some names for you. I will give you another name of
who the Texans might just pick atforty two, and we do want to
continue some of the conversation about yourHouston Astros, who dropped to seven and
nineteen with their three to one losstoday to the Chicago Cubs. Scored in
the first and did not score again. Cubs got all their runs off of
Rafael Montero and Brian Abreu. Monterotagged for two of those runs with the

(01:32):
runners he left on base for AbralloObreo giving up the two run homer after
a bloop fielder's choice brought home thetying run. The two run homer,
there's the difference in the game. Our last caller, noted manager Joe Spotta,
has received earned asked for politely hisfirst ejection. It was a monumental
day, one thousand hits for AlexBregman and Joe Spota's first toss, so

(01:56):
he was ejected and provided his teamthree whole outsworth of I've just fired you
up because he got ejected between theend of the eighth inning and the top
of the ninth inning. Talking tohome plate on Pire, who did not
have a good day today. Hemissed some calls in the strike zone.
He missed many more out of thestrike zone, and I think it both
sides were not very happy with it. You know, Alex Bregman had two

(02:19):
hits, like we mentioned, healso had two strikeouts, both of which
had pitches he did not believe werein the zone, but the un played
on Pire did. Joe Spotted didcomment after the game on the first ever
ejection of his managerial career. Ijust, you know, did not agree
with his strike zone codect throughout thewhole game. Yeah. I thought there
was some you know, pitches didn'tgo our way, and I just didn't

(02:44):
agree with him. But did youkind of choose that moment right there?
I just got tired of watching him? Yeah, so did we? So
didn't we? What he's meant tosay? Yeah, as I got tired
of watching the umpire do his jobpoorly. I was tired of watching that,
so I wanted to let him know. But his direct quote was I

(03:04):
got tired of watching. So ifyou want to add in after that,
whatever you think he meant, Iwas tired of watching today's game, tired
of watchings. I mean, it'sI know what everyone's thinking. So it's
out there for you if you wantit. But well they're from Alex Bregman,
justin Verlander a little bit over thecourse of the next hour as well.
Verlander again some good and bad fromhis start, and Bregman in that
two hole, which is in myopinion, where he's likely to stay for

(03:27):
an extended period of time unless wesee a massive over again. He is
not hitting well. Alvarez is nothitting well, Tucker's not hitting well.
It's a team thing, and that'show you Again, they could be twelve
and fourteen and we'd be saying, man, this team really needs to get
it together. But some part oftheir team would be going all right.
If there were twelve and fourteen,no part of their team is going right.

(03:47):
And that's how you managed to findyourself twelve games under five hundred.
Half of the series you've played, you've not won a game in. You've
been swept in half of the seriesthat you've played. Those are worst team
in baseball, all type of things. So worst start for the franchise since
nineteen sixty nine? What were youdoing back in nineteen sixty nine? Wex

(04:08):
the people that made me have met, but I was not on the horizon.
What's their anniversary? What year Ibelieve that was the year they were
married. Wow, but I wasn'tthe first one to pop out anyway,
And even though twenty thirteen happened.Shout out to Seth. His most recent

(04:28):
text was you think Trader Nick triesto get into round one? Think we
might even trade back. We needa DV with the first pick. Seth,
this is for you. We're onlyabout five plus months away from the
Texans. Believe me, it's gonnasave the city and make Houston sports great
again. Don't worry. The lastone was about the sad sack astros.
He's in on it all. Ilove Seth. Yes, I don't even

(04:49):
think about the last time they did. It's to me the three years of
futility, intentional futility that Josel Tuvewas a part of, the Jeff Luno
and Jim Crane were a part ofof. If I just go back to
there, if this product I wason purpose and this is worse. I
know. Not on purpose, that'sthe thing, and I uh, Look,

(05:09):
we're gonna talk to h to JeffBlum tomorrow obviously from Mexico. By
the way, she is gonna beSo what how did how did you leave
it with the one drink per segment. Do you want me to tell you
exactly what he texted me when itcame because it is an off day,
so don't blame don't blame him.I'll be ready Taco's e servesa. But

(05:31):
they do have they have planned someevents around being down in Mexico City.
Actually part of the Astros and Rockiescontingent for the Astros, the Shooting Stars
and some others are already there andthey've done some things. They'll do some
more tomorrow and then it's time forbaseball. And Major League Baseball has set
up this you know, Mexico CitySeries clearly long before this season played.

(05:53):
I think they had a pretty goodidea of what they were doing when they
chose these two teams uh to makethe trip to Mexico City. Just thirty
teams in Major League Baseball, theMarlins and White Sox are the only two
teams worse than these two teams thatare heading down to Mexico City. It
combined thirteen and thirty eight record. What an ambassadorship for the game that the
majors are sending down in Mexico regardlesswho they send. Yeah, the fans

(06:15):
will see a team that wins anda team that loses. It never changes.
Well, I hope that it's theAstros doing the winning because it's been
a minute. Certainly do I Likewe said, We've got a bunch of
things to get to. But Iknow a lot of you want to discuss
the topic at hands, so wewill continue with that as we roll through
this first portion of the second hourof the program. Seven one three,
two one two five seven ninety brandand you are next up. What do

(06:36):
you got for us Astros? Whatabout them? We need to stop losing
to the Cubs. Mission accomplished. They don't have to anymore. They won't
play them again this year. Good. I'm excited, so we could play

(06:57):
the Carla Milwaukee's Saturday. Okay, sounds like it sounds like he's pretty excitable.
Guy. Let's get Andy in here. What's going on? Andy?
Back here on the A team wexand ac here with you. Andy.
What you got? Yeah? Igot a bunch stuff talking about I'm just
gonna say, get this series beforethis game today, Breckman was night.

(07:19):
If you if you take a brayWho out of the lineup, Breckman was
ninth and slugging ninth, and opseighth, and on base percent ninth and
average and ninth and RBIs tied witha guy who had fifty three at bats
less than him. Katerina, Now, we were told that Alvarez batting in

(07:42):
the second was because you want yourbest hitter in the second hole, So
why do you reward Reckman. You'renot rewarding him a second hole. That's
not a reward. It's the samething that Dusty did many, many,
many times over the last four years. And I think it's a smart move.
You're putting your hitter who you needto stop struggling, who's got a

(08:03):
history of not struggling. You needhim to get better, and in their
mind, the best way to dothat is put somebody behind him that is
going to give him pitches to see. And in this case, you're actually
putting two hitters behind him. Hewas hitting behind both Tucker and Alvarez.
Now he's hitting in front of bothof them. And the assumption is just
like it was for pain you whenhe was in the two hole, is

(08:24):
he doesn't have to fish for pitches. He has a good enough eye and
that really hasn't been his problem. But if they don't throw him pitches to
hit, he'll just walk and he'llbe on first and he'll provide a runner
on base for Alvarez, then presumablyTucker, but mostly you're hoping he will
get pitches over the plate and he'llstart finding a way to get himself out
of it. Is absolutely not areward, but they don't think that batting

(08:46):
him fourth versus six or sixth versuseighth is going to get him out of
this slump that he's in. AndI tend to agree. I don't know
that this will work, but Idon't have an issue with the reasoning to
go on, I guess, soall right, we will take a quick
time out right here. We willcome right back. We'll get you caught
up on well everything we haven't gottento like we usually do this time of

(09:09):
day. But that's pretty much everything, since we're in an abbreviated version of

that, I want to tell you, guys about what you can guarantee will

(10:39):
It is the eighteen here on SportsTalk seven ninety Astros lose three to
one. They are swept in Chicago. I'm seeing a lot of creativity with
regards to the Jo Aspata ejection, his first as Astros manager. Again,
I know there's a lot of peopleout there that feel very strongly about him
one way or the other. Iwould say to them the same thing I

(11:03):
would say to the people who aredancing in the streets because I told you
so about Dusty Baker. Neither oneof these guys would be able to win
right now with the way this teamis playing, pitching, hitting, and
all points in between. Doesn't matterwho the manager is right now, it's
on the players. And if youthink that Dusty would have been doing any
better right now, you look asdumb as the people who are you know,

(11:26):
were saying last year they couldn't waitfor Joe Aspota And you want to
dance on that grave that whatever youwant to call it, it's it's so
far. Is there some responsibility onJoe, Sure, but it's so far.
It's like a bray you. It'sso far removed from the top of
the list right now in my opinion, and I'm assuming you agree with me.
Wex that. I just it's untilfurther notice. I'm like, like,

(11:50):
if he makes a stupid mistake orbut like we were talking earlier,
for example, would you have putMontero back out there? And you brought
up the fact that, well,if you do in that situation, you're
doing it. You know, yourun the risk of having to replace him
in the middle of the inning andthen having to replace that guy in the
middle of the inning. And that'sexactly how it unfolded today. But God

(12:13):
forbid, a major league reliever hasto get up and down. And I
know it's I mean, I'm sayingit like it's sarcastic, but they literally
try to avoid it because they thinkit makes it easier. And I'm sure
the statistics prove that it's correct. He threw nine pitches to get out of
the fifth inning that Verlander began. He was great, So sending him back
out there to throw probably you know, another sixteen to eighteen pitches and maybe

(12:35):
get out of the next inning andthen a Brave pitches the seventh, and
Presley pitches the eighth, and Haterpitches the ninth, and your one nothing
lead holds up. Because that's whatBraker. This season was supposed to be,
like, didn't we all tell youit took a bray you how many
pitches to turn that one nothing insurmountablelead into a three to one deficit.

(12:56):
A bray you the latest example ofsomeone who was either good to great a
year ago and certainly before that, and is nowhere near what the back of
his jersey says right now. Myopinion, he was one of the five
best relievers in baseball last year.I really believe it. You don't have
to be a closer to be thebest reliever in baseball. He was pitching

(13:18):
in high leverage situations. He wasbasically unhittable. He would go months in
succession without allowing runs. And Iasked, you know, we had Chandler
Roman. Obviously throughout the spring trainingand again through the season. I don't
think it's obvious by any means, but there was almost certainly going to be
some regression. He didn't have togo this far to prove there was going
to be regression because he's he's he'snot unusable, because he's been good enough

(13:43):
somehow, then even giving up fourhome runs and having another game where it's
very winnable until he got there, and it happened in his first game of
the season against the Yankees. Also, his era is not everything. His
era is significantly better than both Presleyand Haters. They have all had way
too many issues to Again, it'sit's there's no one thing. If it

(14:07):
was one thing, they'd be agame or two under, they'd be three
or four games under. They'd havebeen swept once or twice. It is
everything. Name an area of thisteam that's been going well, and you
can't do it. It's why there'sseven and nineteen. Carl is next here
on the eighteen. What's going on? Carl? Hey, guys, appreciate
if you indulge me a little bit. Let me make a comment about Burlander

(14:28):
and just something about the from adiehard fan perspective. I'll start with Verlander.
If I'm justin Verlander, I don'twant to have any astro relief hitcher
coming in for me with inherited runnerson base. I was hoping, I
was excited when to see how hegot out of that no crooked number in

(14:48):
the first inning thing today. Hopefullyhe was going to try to show the
young guys that you can you canpitch out of trouble now from from the
From a fan perspective, I'm adie hard, diehard Astro fan. I
think they're going to come back. But the worst I think. I've told
you this before, but my wifewas an actress out in Hollywood back in

(15:09):
the seventies and eighties, and andso she was always surprised that people coming
up to her like the celebrity celebritychasers. Well, she doesn't understand sports
fans. And he knows now tostay away from me after these after the
Astros lose, the worst thing thatcan happen to a to Ah for a

(15:33):
team perspective about fans is for themto lose that emotional involvement that we all
get keyed up about. I knowI should not get so amped up,
both positive and negative after these games, but when you start being when when
the fans start being apathetic. AndI'm not an apathetic fan, but I'm
becoming that way watching this crap intothe bed every single night that they play.

(15:56):
Now, whether they get things goingin Mexico at eighty seven hundred feet
down there with a little you know, Corp's light plus, we'll see how
things go. But you know thingswill turn around. But god, it's
so hard to deal with this. But anyway, I love these guys.
I'm not going to bail on them. But it's you know, it's since

(16:19):
as you know, it's frustrating towatch. All right, that's it,
You got it, no question aboutit. Ironically enough, though, to
your one main point about bringing inrelievers, that that job got done.
Montaro came in with a pair ofrunners on and got them out of trouble
without any run scoring, and that'swhy they held the lead. It was
the following inning where he, Monteroand a bray You unfortunately were unable to

(16:40):
hold the lead keep it tied. They fell behind. Verlander probably did show
them something in that first inning, and then over the course of getting them
to the fifth inning, he gota lot of swings and missus. Today
they also fouled off twenty three ofhis pitches, which is the main reason
why he did not get through fiveinnings today. He did not have It
wasn't at every batter thing, becausehe clearly put a bunch of guys away,

(17:03):
But it was kind of a strugglefor him. It was a little
bit like just an outing where theywere just being super patient and he was
trying to paint the corners. Oncehe got his curveball spin going midway through
the first inning, he was fineand he really was only in trouble one
more time and that was his finalinning. But a lot of foul ball
is gonna run your pitch count up. It's kind of the same thing the
Astros did to Nears, which theyreally didn't do to the starting pitcher,

(17:26):
and I thought they absolutely should have. There are a lot of pitchers that
comes through in this series that Ithought were throwing a lot of hittable strikes,
a lot of hittable pitches, andthe Astros just were not taking advantage
of it at all. Okay,Kevin, it's your turn here on the
A team, and I hope whatit says you're gonna say will prove to
be true. What's the solution forthe Astros? All right, guys,

(17:48):
this is coming from a place oflove. I'm a longtime Houston Astros fan.
I own four season tickets, spentover forty grand for this just this
year, and seeing tickets, Ithink we're caddling these guys way too much.
I think we are giving them waytoo many nuts in the dugout some

(18:11):
flower seeds, the fast sale seeds, pe nuts, and obviously you can
handle that. Geeze, dude, who's screening the calls today? Dan just
hanging up? Geez, Let's getScott in here. What's going on?
Scott? Well, I'll try tofollow that Tana show. What I wanted

(18:40):
to talk about real quick is Ithink this started this with the Astros started
last year and and I want you, guys, if you could I know
you're you're probably up against it,but if you could talk that out a
little bit, and if you lookabout last year, last year was not

(19:00):
easy, right, if we allremember, and I think it came down
to we had to win the lastgame of the season. I think last
year, and what I'm getting atis they had to press all last year
just to get that done right, and then they fell short, right,
I mean, they didn't burn throughthe playoffs, they weren't gangbusters, and

(19:22):
they ended up falling short. AndTucker was very bad in the playoffs last
year. Now this year, we'renot even a month in the season and
we're already behind the eight ball.Don't you think this year is going to
be just as bad from a stressorperspective as last year. So the question

(19:45):
is is this did this already happen? Are we just now realizing that,
you know, the Titanic broke andit's it's already halfway sunk. And I
don't think it's that. I kindof see where you're coming from. With
how things went. They won fiveout of six last year to win the
division. The idea that they weregoing to miss the playoffs wasn't really at

(20:07):
the forefront because it seemed very likely. It wasn't a given because of where
Seattle was, but very likely ifthey just took care of business, they'd
at least make the playoffs. Butby doing what they did and winning the
division, they made their run tothe CS that much easier. They only
needed to beat one team three outof five, and that team was Minnesota,
who we all know stinks in theplayoffs, especially against Houston and everybody.

(20:29):
And they handled their business very, very easily against the Twins, winning
three of those four. Getting theseseries against Texas, which clearly was going
to begin at home, and theywere also up three games to two in
that series headed home didn't work out. I'm not a big carryover or they
couldn't get it done last year, and there's some hangover from it, and
I'm especially not big on it whenwe're talking about this team. This team's

(20:52):
literally kind of done at all.You had a twenty nine and thirty one
regular season during the COVID year, and then big bang boom, you're in
Game seven of the LCS a coupleweeks later. The only place they've been,
no matter what's transpired, are thefirst one to sixty two, seven
consecutive years. They figured out howto win enough games to get them into
the League Championship Series. Four timesthey've won enough games to get to the

(21:14):
World Series. This group, asa core, it's always been a little
bit different, different pitchers at timesand different other people. As a member
of those cores, they have figuredout what it takes to not only win
then, but have a season thatfollows it that puts them in the very
very same position. This is different, clearly. I don't think there's carry.
I know Dana Brown mentioned it.All the extra pitches guys have thrown,

(21:37):
the extra games and innings, it'sI don't know. I'm not really
into believing that that's a reason whythey've had the injuries or have had slow
starts or can't throw it the waythey need to. I mean they played
eleven games extra last year. Theyear before they played thirteen extra games.
That means most of your pitchers, like Franber Valdez, he threw three times
in the postseason when they won theWorld Series two years ago, those three

(22:02):
games, those twenty some odd innings. I know he's a heavy inning picture,
but the same thing with anybody elseyou want to mention. I just
I know it's accumulation, but I'mnot none of this stuff carried over.
If anything carried over, they wouldn'tbe seven to nineteen. Well, you
know, I'll tell you what. We'll We'll take a quick time out because
they're just getting nuts. There's ananalogy I want to make when we come
back about that carryover aspect. Idon't think it's necessarily well, well,

(22:27):
i'll explain, you can react,we can figure out what everybody else thinks
about it when we come back.It is the a team here on Sports
Talk seven ninety. I'll tell you. I'll tell you what's a pain other
than having a team have its worststart since nineteen sixty nine. Is you
thinking that the best option to getrid of your joint pain is surgery and
downtime and drugs, when all you'vegot to do is call seven one three

to one, three nine one, three fifty five. Did you listen to
every game on any device with ourfree iHeartRadio apps? Sports Talk seven ninety
Home of your Rockets. Wow.With the forty second pick in the NFL

(24:18):
Draft, the Houston Texans select MikePaul, junior defensive tackle Ohio State.
For those of you listening here onthe A team on Sports Talk seven ninety,
we've made a little bit of atransition now to the nuttiness of the
NFL Draft. This is what Ithink the Texans might do at forty two.

(24:44):
Keep in mind, I know TraderNick is who he is, so
I've been giving you names all week. This is name number four. I'm
not even necessarily married to them atforty two, but a player that in
between thirty five and sixty four Icertainly think it could happen. They have
forty two, so I'm gonna tellyou it's forty two, even though I
think that's a bit of a reach. If they sit at forty two and

(25:07):
sit at fifty nine, I don'tthink my call Junior is a player they're
getting at fifty nine, because Ithink there will be a run on defensive
tackles, just like there's gonna bea run on corners, and having given
you two names of corners already thisweek, I couldn't very well give you
a third. Couple other players orhonorable mentions will save them all for tomorrow's
show. I'll give you six morenames, one who I think goes at

(25:30):
forty two, and the other fivecould end up being Texans before the end
of the night Friday night. Buton Mike Call, Junior, Yep,
he went to Ohio State, bigprogram, lots of football, lots of
winning football, clearly something that thisscouting staff, led by Nick Cassario,

(25:53):
puts a lot of stock in.I Again, I'm trying to pick players
I think they'll like. I don'tnecessarily have to like them, but I
think that they have to, andmaybe I'll be right maybe I'll be wrong,
but just to think about that name, I think he shows the quickness
they're looking for in their interior alignmentin terms of getting into or pushing the

(26:15):
linemen back or beating them and straightup getting into the backfield. I think
they want their players to do morethan just hold their spot and eat up
blockers. And I think that's alittle bit of who they had last year
versus who they might run with thisyear. So guy with long arms,
most of his other measurables aren't eyepopping in one direction or the other.
He's not super huge, he's notsuper small. He doesn't have tiny hands,

(26:37):
or he doesn't have an unbelievable wingspan. His numbers are all fine,
and among the players I've suggested,he actually falls on the opposite side.
Finally, in age, he's notyet twenty one. Mostly the other players
I've suggested so far this week arethree four five year college guys twenty two,
twenty three, twenty four years oldat some point during this up coming

(27:00):
season. So somewhere in the again, I've got him here at forty two.
I'm readily acknowledging I think that mightbe a touch early, but maybe
this is an opportunity for Nick tolook at the board at thirty eight,
thirty nine, forty forty one andsay, man, there are ten players
that I love and three specifically. So when a team that has forty six

(27:22):
or forty nine or fifty two calls, well, luckily we've already had some
preliminary conversations that I can pull thetrigger on a deal and make the fans
wait a little bit longer before Ifinally make a selection in this year's twenty
twenty four NFL draft. Um notto take away from the topic at hand,
which is the earlier of the picksfor Friday Night for the Texans,

(27:45):
I am seeing increasingly with that fiftyninth pick, and again I don't know,
maybe they won't have it. Ihave no idea what Nick Cassio is
going to do. You seem tobecause you keep picking that ninety pick.
No way, there's a zero percent. I would even say, I've said
it four and a half. Ithink already, and I think I'll take
the over on the number of tradesthat he'll end up making. I mean,
he's made three eight nine. Heloves the maneuvering he has. I

(28:11):
said the word I keep using isconvicted. He and his staff go into
these drafts very convicted about who theywant and what they want to get accomplished,
and when it's time to pull thetrigger, he didn't really have any
issue doing it. So do youthink he's trading up in the second I
don't know. It's a matter ofif there's a you know, when that
run inevitably happens, and the twopositions I think they happen to need most,

(28:33):
I think other than wide receiver, because I don't think they need that.
They're absolutely loaded to it at thespots they are. And that's why
when Jim Naggie was on with usyesterday he said the same thing. There's
going to be two runs on corners. One will happen tonight when five go
off the board, probably in thetop twenty five or top twenty eight,
and that might mean a sixth couldsneak into the first round. But if

(28:56):
that doesn't happen and the those fivego off tonight, run probably in the
first six seven to eight picks ofround number two starting on Friday night,
which again is right before the Texansare going to be on the clock.
And I think there's another I thinkthere's eight corners that might go in the
second round, and it kind ofdepends where it starts and who they like
as to what they might do.The other position that I think there's gonna

(29:18):
be a similar run on, justa little smaller number of players. I
think there's probably two defensive tackles thatgo in the first round, Newton much
later and Murphy much earlier, andthen there's probably five or six guys.
Hall is in this group, Fiskis in the group, Mason Smith's in
the group, Chris Jenkins in thegroup that are probably off the board in
the neighborhood of when their second secondround pick comes around. I think Devant

(29:40):
Andre Sweat is probably after that, not in that group. The reason I
bring that up the fifty ninth pickagain, if they have it or not,
is in addition to defensive tackles,a lot of mocks I've looked at
have them taking again what I mentioned, I think it was yesterday, the
day before interior offensive lineman, inthis case Brandon Coleman out of TCU at

(30:04):
the guard position. So I'm justcurious as much as anybody about what Nick
does or doesn't do and how thatpertains to you know what positions we're talking
about, absolutely anything in the secondary. And then, like I said,
interior offensive lineman, which you aren'tas I don't think as adamant about.

(30:26):
Even Nakey said that, yes, sir, Couleman's a little bit different in
that it would have to be veryspecific to the team. What is it
that they think he is. Ithink he has positional flexibility, Probably is
not an interior alignment. Probably isa tackle, but I don't know that
for sure. I don't know howthey view it. I don't know how
everybody else views it. Last yearhe split time between left tackle and left

(30:48):
guard. The two seasons prior,he played left tackle and left guard.
He also has been out of highschool since twenty eighteen, so six years
since he played high school football. When they get into month two of this
next season, he'll be twenty fouryears old, a much older player.
Kid from Denton and went to TCUafter community college. He projects prop to

(31:12):
me probably early fifty ninth pick.I think that might be a bit early
for him. I'll tell you now, the player I'm going to give tomorrow
at forty two plays interior offensive line. Is it not the guy that I
just mentioned him. Okay, interestingbecause like I said, I'll be the
first offensive lineman all I'll be thefirst offensive guy all week on. I
don't know if Coleman is an interiorline and like I said, I think

(31:33):
he might be projected as an NFLtackle. And yes, it will be
the first offensive player I've suggested theywill. I think this draft might be.
If they end up, let's saythey draft nine players, it'll still
probably be four and five one wayor the other, probably leaning towards defense,
maybe six and three. But they'renot going to ignore the offense.
They're going to draft a running back. I think they're gonna draft a tight
end, and I think they're gonnadraft a ligneman. I'm not sure if

(31:56):
they get to a fourth offensive playerand then where they would have that play.
You usually can accommodate it an undraftedfree agency if you don't address it,
because there will be new wide receiversbrought in from this draft class just
might not necessarily be a drafted player. I mean, you ended up getting
Xavier Hutchinson late in the draft, and they could easily do something like that.
And for all I know, maybethere's ten players they're drafting. I

(32:17):
don't think so. I actually thinkthey're gonna draft less than the nine and
a half today, I think so. I think it's gonna end up being
lower because of all the other thingshe's already done, all the other players
that have spots on the team. There's only so many other spots truly available
for players you're gonna draft. Theyhave the money obviously for their draft pool,
but just a thought. All right, we will commiserate one more segment

(32:38):
about the Astros and call it aThursday in anticipation of Round one of the
NFL Draft to night, and thenwe'll have one more show between now and
when the Texans start adding players viathe draft coming up tomorrow night. And
a good place to watch all thatas well as Astros games, because eventually
they will start winning again, wepromise, I think. But whatever happens,

(33:00):
you want to go to Tom's WatchBar. And we had a caller
earlier talking about the fact that they'regoing to be heading down there. It's
great place, shocking anything but truthful. It was Tom in Downtown who made
that phone call, and so ifhe went to if you did not know
this, Tom's Watch Bar is theUltimate Downtown sports Bar. So if Tom

(33:21):
and Downtown went to Tom's Watch BarDowntown at Carolina and Polk, it would
be double the Tom. If Iwere him, just speaking for myself,
I would probably walk in and givethem the don't you know who I am?
I'm Tom in Downtown and also mywatch bar. Since you're on this
show, that means dad jokes areallowed it Tom Tom. Yep, you
can free shuttle to and from Astroshome games when you're out there Tom's Watch

(33:43):
Bar. All you have to doto take advantage of that is park in
the Green Streak garage, get thatticket Validay when you enjoy what you got
going on at Tom's, and thenhop on their free shuttle too and from
the game. Means you get toenjoy Tom's Watch Bar both before and after.
Obviously when they're on the road youcan road you can enjoy them all
throughout the even but on those gameswe were just talking about. With the
free shuttle available those home dates, they're also offering you buy one, get

(34:06):
one drink specials. Where is Tom'sWatch Bar Downtown's ultimate sports bar. It's
a twelve oh one Caroline That isCaroline and Polk right there on the corner.
As mentioned, parking the Green StreakGarage, get your ticket validated for
your parking, and they'll show youto and from the ball game. Take
advantage of everything they've got to offerat Tom's watch Bar. The eight team

(34:28):
continues on your phone. Listen toSports Talk seven ninety on any device with
our free iHeartRadio ramp. All right, we got a few more minutes with
you, and it's our last chance. Even though it's not very Texans related,
because it does not impact them tootremendously other than there's a lot of
players they have absolutely no interest inthat are going to go off the board

(34:52):
very very quickly in this draft,so quick little exercise. You could not
pay me enough to be downtown Detroitright now for anything, let alone the
NFL Draft. Is that the questionyou had, No, it's not a
caution about that, it's about thedraft itself. I'm more sportsy than hey,
this is cool for Detroit, eventhough it is. The Bears are
not fooling anybody with what Ryan Poleswould not acknowledge yesterday. They will be

(35:14):
taking Caleb Williams with the first pick. On a scale of zero to one
hundred, on a confidence level, how confident are you Jaden Daniels is going
number two to the commanders? What'sthe scale? Zero to one hundred,
the regular old scale? What couldbe one to ten? I'll say,
you know what, I'll say seventyseven percent. Yeah, I think that's

(35:38):
probably where a lot of people are, not quite eighty. There's a few
people, not very many, buta few people think Jayden Daniels' future is
actually bright enough to say the Bearsshould be considering him at number one,
but not enough, and the Bearsare not in that camp. We'll put
Daniels. To keep it simple,Commanders, take Daniels at two, and
that's two for two quarterbacks off theboard. How confident are you that the

(36:00):
third pick in the draft will bea quarterback? That's the Patriots? Right?
It is? Now about that.I'll give you my answer in just
a second. That's why I askedit in that manner. But remember earlier
during the show, during the break, you and I were discussing draft coverage
tonight, and you mentioned that BillBelichick is going to be on with the
Pat McAfee version of tonight's NFL Draftcoverage. Yep, he tweeted it as

(36:24):
much about forty five minutes ago andsaid, we've got Bill Belichick, let
me let me do it like him. We got Bill Belichick breaking down every
single draft pick this evening tonight isgoing to be magical. And I'm thinking
to myself, I can't help butthink that they would trade out of that
pick if he was still in charge, not take a quarterback at number three

(36:44):
and do something wild that because youdon't have Tom Brady doesn't wind up looking
as genius as it used to.Well, trading out of three is a
very real possibility. I think hewould definitely entertain, maybe even more than
the current group is, because youdon't have to draft this uorderback at three.
Right. If you think McCaffrey's betterand you know he's not going to
get drafted at three or four orfive, well then you do trade back.

(37:07):
Could you trade with the Giants,Could you trade with the Titans?
Could you trade with anybody to moveout of that spot. And maybe it's
not even limited to McCaffrey. Maybethe list goes up. Maybe they believe
Drake May is not valued by otherteams, and their intel is strong enough
that they feel like, well, this is the guy we want, and
we're not concerned about not drafting himand seeing him go somewhere else. We

(37:28):
know where the pocket is, wherehe needs to go, and where we
need to get back to after thisfirst trade, they need more talent.
They need to give jirod May alittle bit better chance to compete in the
division where the Bills are still theteam with Josh Allen, the Dolphins still
probably believe they should be better thanthey are and should have been more of
a force in the playoffs than theywere. And the other team gets Aaron

(37:49):
Rodgers back and new jerseys right sortof, which tells I have something about
that in just a second, whichtells me, by the way to answer
your question, I actually do thinkthe Paytriots will stay right there and take
a quarterback. I do too,and I think they're taking Drake May.
Okay, number four, How confidentare you that the first wide receiver is

(38:13):
Marvin Harrison June ninety nine point ninenine. It's a good answer. I
think Malik Nighbors is going to beabsolutely awesome in the NFL. I think
Roma Dunesda is going to be absolutelyawesome in the NFL. I wouldn't take
either one of them over Marson MarvinHarrison Junior, because I think the very
same thing about him. It's okayif they're not that far apart, it's
okay if they're all three very good, and they're all three going. I
don't think just in the top ten. I think they're going in the top

(38:35):
eight. So those are all ofthe next picks. At least. Let's
six guys off the board. Now, the seventh and eighth. Other players
that will go in the top eight. Quarterback Michigan national champion. No,
And I said McCaffrey. Obviously,I meant JJ McCarthy. You meant he's
going in the top eight. Ithink he's going eight. What all white

(38:58):
guys are the same? Now thereis a white McCaffrey and they'll draft and
a white McCarthy, and there's alsoa white McConkey, And yes, I
forgot about that, but only oneof them won the national title last year
and played for Jim Harbaugh. He'sgoing eight. I do believe there will
be a trade to get to eightfor the team that wants him. And
I like what other people are thinkingthat maybe that team is the one that

(39:20):
does not want to go into theseason with Sam Darnold at quarterback. That's
the Vikings. I think the Titanswill just play it simple and not make
it very difficult, and they'll takethe tackle that we all love. Yep.
And those are your top eight draftpicks. That's a pretty predictable outline
of things that come tonight, andin fact, no surprises in the first
eight picks. I'm gonna say itright now, Yeah, who gets them

(39:43):
and what other moves are made.I'm almost convinced that when we think there's
gonna be a bunch of trades, there ultimately are not. But I do
think there are going to be abunch of trades in this first round tonight,
and it's gonna be fun to watchunfold because of it going to be
a run on offensive tackles midway throughthe first round, going to be a
run on cornerbacks throughout most of thefirst round. And why I keep pointing
this out to last year's selection ofWill Anderson Junior. There probably are two

(40:07):
edge rushers. Maybe that's it thatgo in the first thirty two picks.
Maybe Chop Robinson makes it three, but Robinson, Jared Verse and Dallas Turner,
and I don't envision any of themeven having remotely the career that I
expect to Will Anderson Junior to have. I was just about to say,
like the trade anymore every day thatgoes by agree, And that's what I

(40:30):
was about to get at. We'regonna look back at the twenty twenty four
draft and be even more impressed withwhat the Texans did on Night one in
twenty twenty three. Last question forour Longhorns. How many of them will
be drafted tonight? Give me thetop five. You're probably capped at three,

(40:52):
Worthy, Mitchell, and Murphy.I think they all. I'm gonna
say two, I'm gonna say one. Really yes, but I think so
the first forty minutes of Thursday,of Friday night, Worthy and Mitchell go
okay, I think it's just justthe DT that goes tonight. So they're

(41:13):
the they're the Johnny Manziel's of thisdraft now actually late first round one.
How they're projected to go late first, early second. It's not anything outrageous.
Uh yeah, that's that's probably asafe bet. I'm just again,
it's it's kind of like and andby the way, another reminder, just
a little over five months until theTexans play game. Yeah, don't forget

(41:34):
