Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time to bring in our good buddy, Chandler Roam of
the Athletic. I can't imagine that we have anything to
talk about with this guy the day after the trade deadline.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
All right, first thing out of the gate.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
You're just your overall general assessment of what did go
down and maybe on some of the things that didn't
go down involving the astros.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
I think I think they did what they had to do.
Speaker 4 (00:23):
They had to get a stabilizing starter to put in
their rotation. And you say Kakushi was depending on how
you view jad Clarity with either the first or second
best guy out there available. It was a seller's market.
It was a market that was not conducive for the
astro the team that doesn't have a ton in their
farm system, and it was a difficult one to navigate
(00:44):
and it was going to be.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
A difficult price to pay. And that's what happened. You know,
they did.
Speaker 4 (00:51):
They were in on Flarity, as you know I reported
all along and as was kind of came.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Out yesterday that they were in on.
Speaker 4 (00:57):
Him, But I think Yusse Kakuchu was was higher on
their board. I think he was their top target. He's
who they wanted and they went out and donned. I
know the return is infuriating for a lot of the fans,
but I'm not here to tell you it wasn't an overpay.
It was like it's just by volume alone, it does
(01:22):
look like an overpay, but I'm not sure the reaction
is as should have been.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
As fierce to the package. You know, Will Wagner, to
be quite honest, was blocked here.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
He doesn't really have a great defensive position, and the
defensive positions he plays the best are locked up here
for a while. Joey Loberfido certainly could turn into a
nice player, but kind of profiles as a fourth outfielder
type with a lot of swing and miss in his game.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
But can certainly get better.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
And I think Jake Bloss is the one that that
if you're the aster or you're going to look at
this five or ten years down the road, you want
to see what his career looks like, because I think
he's probably the best prospect he gave up in that deal.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
I think part of it too, was they had already
started Jake Bloss's service time clock.
Speaker 4 (02:15):
He you know, twenty three year old with eight starts
above a ball and they've already started his service time clock.
They used an option year on him, so that decree
that you know that that depressed his value a little bit,
to be honest with you, So I don't think it
was this egregious overpay that everyone is claiming it was.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
It was a lot, It was a steep price.
Speaker 4 (02:39):
It was more than I thought they were going to
have to give up, especially for Kokuchi.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
But I think.
Speaker 4 (02:45):
Some some nuance and some rational thought is needed to
discuss the whole thing.
Speaker 5 (02:50):
Curious because I would agree with you based on the
way they went about it, and you just said it
the same a. Why what made Kokuchi their target? What
is it about his arsenal, his pitches, his I mean,
I don't want to say track record because I don't
think there's much on it that suggests otherwise. You know,
there are advanced numbers that might suggest certain things. But
(03:10):
I guess the simplest question is what I initially said,
Why was he their top target from the starting pitching pool?
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Good stuff?
Speaker 4 (03:18):
I mean, he can be up to ninety seven to
ninety eight from the left side. There's a ton of
pitches can miss bats when he's when he's on, is
still had the best strikeout rate of his career. Isn't
walking anybody either. You look at the underlying peripherals, you
look at the FIP is about a run running a
half lower than the era you look. You know, everyone's
(03:39):
talking about the six eight seven era. In his past
twelve starts, well, he's gotten around a fourth fifth in
that timeframe, So you think that there is some regression
to a meme coming. He's not an ace, but as
we talked about all along, the Ashers never needed to
get an ace. He if And I think they have
faith in their pitching develop and they're pitching infrastructure that
(04:01):
they can find some usage things. They think his mechanics
are great, And you say, Kakuchi said the same thing today.
He said he feels like his mechanics. It's never been
a problem. You know, he talked about he's left too
many pitches over the middle of the plate. He said
some of that has common situations where he was trying
to limit damage and not let run score laden games.
(04:24):
I think the astors think that they can find some
usage patterns with him throwing certain pitches different places, throwing
certain pitches more, throwing certain pitches less.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
That will help him out, And I also, quite frankly,
you have to.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Look at the roster he was just on. The Blue
Jays have one of the worst bulltens in baseball. Their
whole team is I mean, they just sold off the
whole team. But the team that was there was not
giving off great vibes as if it was a fun
and happy time going on over there. So I don't
know how much that contributed to it as well. I
haven't looked it up yet, but I'd be curious to
know of the runs yseay Ka Kuchi allowed in Toronto,
(04:59):
how many were scored after he left the game, and
like baseball's worst bullpen came in and allows him inherited
runners to score. Again, that's not that's not like defending
the numbers. Numbers are what they are, and one thing
is for sure, And I wrote this the night of
the deadline, the night that they made the trade.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
He is under the.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
That's pressure to come up here and perform. And then again,
it doesn't have to be a sub to era. I'm
sure they'd love it if it was that. But given
the package that they gave up and given the public
perception of this trade, he is under a ton of
pressure to come up here and fishwell, and you know,
to make to make it stay a little bit less.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
I guess from a public outside perception.
Speaker 5 (05:42):
You guys had a chance to talk to him a
little bit earlier at the ballpark.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
What what did you say have to say?
Speaker 4 (05:49):
His English? Joe Spott actually said this today too. His
English is very good. He's spoke in Japanese today but
didn't need our questions translated for him.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
We got a little bit of a side session with him,
just to introduce ourselves, and it seem.
Speaker 4 (06:03):
Like a very nice, very affable guy was already you know,
chatting up in the clubhouse when we got in the clubhouse.
It sounds like George Springer gave some guys a little
bit of a scouting report on kind of what kind
of guy can Kucci is, So that helps a little bit.
But yeah, he just said he was excited to join
this ball club. Said, you know, he was pressed a
(06:24):
little bit on you know, why his numbers are what
they are, and I just kind of told you he
said he's leaving too many pitches over the plate.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
He said he thinks his mechanics are fine.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
He said he was interested to hear what the Astros
coaches and analysts had to say about what he could do,
and they're actually.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Having that meeting as we speak right now.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
They were going to do that during the VP today
because he's going to start on Friday, So there isn't
much in the way of what they've told him he
needs to do better, what they've told him he needs
to throw.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Less or throw more. I think we'll all find out
together on Friday and when he starts.
Speaker 4 (06:56):
Against the Rays and we can see kind of how
his pitch usage is, maybe.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
What he looks like.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
You know, you mentioned the pressure that he's under, and
I think we all recognize that, and of course the
team is you know, whether meaning to or not placing
that pressure on him just because of the situation.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
Do you think he knows that?
Speaker 1 (07:14):
Do you think he feels that or a little bit
of both, or do you think it's just business as
usual and you know he feels wanted because you know,
another team went out and came and got him.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Yeah. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
I don't know him well enough to you know, diagnose
or analyze that, but you know, I don't think he's dumb.
I think he understands that. You know, they they brought
him here to perform. They brought him here to help
get this team in the playoffs. And that's something that
he said to that. He said he was excited about
playing for a contending team, about getting trying to help
his team get to the playoffs. And I think too,
(07:46):
you know, we just talked about the bad vibes that
Blue Jays team had. I think getting into a clubhouse
where you know, it's a better just vibe, it's a
better mood. They're in contention, they're playing meeting full baseball,
you know, maybe that can give him a jolt, Maybe.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
They can give him some energy.
Speaker 4 (08:04):
I would assume he's aware of kind of why the
team acquired him, but I don't know yet whether the
pressure is going to be too much for him. But
I did find one thing interesting today. You know, he
talked about and I'm paraphrasing.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
A little bit here, but when he was when we.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
Were asking, you know, what had gone wrong in his
last twelve or thirteen starts, he did mention that, you know,
some of the time he kind of hinted that he
was overthrowing a little bit in pressure situations. In toimesury
I had guys on base he was maybe mis executing pitches,
maybe trying to do too much. Well, now he's in
a situation where every start is going to be a
(08:41):
pressure back situation, So you'd have to hope, if you're
the Astros, that he doesn't revert back.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
To that tough luck outing.
Speaker 1 (08:48):
I would say, in a lot of ways for Hunter Brown,
and part of that his own doing last night, because
the fielding that's usually just we take for granted was
just not there in a lot of senses. But you know,
I can't help and I said, this is the first
segment of the show today, I can't help but think
about how high and good the vibes were Saturday night
when Alex Bregman hit that walkoff homer, and just how
(09:09):
things have.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
Not unraveled since then.
Speaker 1 (09:11):
They finally lost ground to the Mariners, like just last night,
but it just feels like it was a very flat outing,
particularly last night for the team in general.
Speaker 3 (09:22):
Yeah, they didn't play well last night. That was probably
one of.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Their ugliest games in the year, just in terms of
they made three errors, they.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Didn't take mini quality at that they hit the balls
hard right at guys. But yeah, just that's one you
want to flush and it's easier said than done, especially.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
Now at this point in the season, when every game
carries a little bit more, meaning you can't.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Afford to have a lot of.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Thoms and the ashers used up. Maybe they're won last
night that they'll have for the rest of the year.
But yeah, I thought Hunter Brown was actually pretty good.
You know, the sacred of Michael A.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Taylor.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
He actually talking to Hunter about it after the game.
He didn't even think with that bad of a pitch.
He just thinks that he doubled up on it. He
thinks that Taylor saw a sinker in the pitch before,
thinks he was timed up and ready for and he
just beat him to the spot. So he thought maybe
if he went slider there or another pitch, maybe that
would have kept Taylor off of it.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
But you know, I think other than that, you look,
I think.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
They averaged like an eighty two mile an hour exit
of velocity off of them last night. A lot of
ground balls and just were hitting the right place. A
lot of bad luck that's going to happen, but you know,
I thought the stuff was really good.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
He was still up in ninety eight, ninety nine.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
I think he struck out six or seven guys, So
I'm I would not worry about what happened.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
To Hunter Brown last night. Was it was just.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
An off night, and certainly he didn't help himself like
you said that with that throwing era, which he kind
of said he should have just eaten that ball, not
even throwing it.
Speaker 5 (10:44):
Joe Spota said he'll make his astro's debut starting the
series that begins on Friday against the Rays. Caleb Ferguson
is available for work as early as tonight, so after
his first couple of appearances, we will ask you about
him next week during your visit with us here on
the eighteen. Chandler, always appreciate the time, thanks for the insight,
and looking forward to the pieces coming from you and
(11:05):
the Athletic in the coming days.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
We got through this whole interview with I'm talking about
Rockell Montaro.
Speaker 5 (11:10):
I'm sorry, what do you think about him being dfed?
You got five seconds inevitable.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
That's what we kind of talked about earlier. Chandler, you're
a wizard. Thank you so much. Yeah, we did it.
