Speaker 1 (00:00):
Last twenty four to forty eight hours or so, we've
been talking a lot on the Houston Astros and what
has been going on. Obviously Kyle Tucker getting traded just
almost a week ago last Friday, and then the news
of the Astros interested in Nolan Arnado, and a lot
of us were kind of at Tenna's up going. Wait,
you don't want to resound Alex Bregman, but you're interested
in and aging Nolan Aronado. So I figured let's head
(00:22):
up to Saint Louis and get some intel on what's
going on with the latest after the news came out
that he blocked a trade, Let's talk to Tanner hendrickson
one on one ESPN in Saint Louis. He is on
Twitter at t Bone one on one ESPN. Tanner. Welcome
in man, appreciate you joining us. Take me through this
deal that came out in the past twenty four hours
(00:44):
of the Astros of Cardinals seemingly had a deal in
place for Nolan Arnado, but the reports said he wasn't
going to trade his note trade cause to Houston. What
have you heard on this?
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yeah, well, first off, thanks for having me, guys, but
you know, Nolan Arnado is the guy that the Saint
Louis Cardinals are looking to ship out. They want to
shed his salary off of their books as they are
going through a reset, and they want to open up
their base for some for a young player and either
Nolan Gorman or Brendan Donovan to get them those six
hundred plate appearances that would be blocked by Nolan Arnatto.
(01:16):
And based on everything that we're here and here in
saying Louis Cardinals had a deal that seemed to be
finalized to send him to Houston. My understanding was originally
in the offseason when the Cardinals present baseball operations talked
with Nolan Arnado and John Mozay. Look, he was told
that Nolan Arnatto would be open minded to a move
to the Houston Astros. But then it sounds like since
Alex Bregman, it sounds like the Astros won't be signing him,
(01:39):
since they've pivoted to Arnado in the trade of Kyle Tucker.
It seems to think that Nolan Arnado has changed his
mind on the Astros. And I can't help but wonder myself, guys,
I wonder if he is hearing some chatter of somebody
else potentially being involved, whether that be out on the
West coast or on the East coast. But Arnatto definitely
wants to go to a contender, and I think he
may have changed his mind on the Astros being just
that well.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
And I almost wonder because then the news comes out
that it says he's still the door is still open.
Therefore a move, and we see that from multiple reporters,
So I almost wonder, is this like a pride thing?
Did they did the Astros and the Cardinals gms get
together and decide, okay, we got a deal here and
(02:20):
nowhere along the way anybody reached out and said anything
to Nolan And then they come out and they got
a deal in place. And then they go to him
and go, hey, you're trading you, and he almost in defiance,
steps up and goes, well, oh wait, I didn't approve that.
Like in other words, it almost feels like Tanner that
they didn't come to him first and say hey, we
might trade you to Houston. It feels like maybe if
they'd ha done that, maybe this trader would have went down.
(02:42):
But what do you make of that where the reports
are coming out saying this deal is not all the
way dead and the door still could be open. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:49):
It's interesting because I've never heard of a player that
has this kind of control of his destiny in terms
of having a no trade clause, deny going to someplace,
but yet the door remain open. And the Saints Blue
is the hockey team here in Saint Louis, tried this
with one of their defensemen to trade him to the
Philadelphia He rejected the note trade and then boom, it
(03:09):
was over. There was no other conversation of it happening.
I've never seen that in any other sport, and I
think the Cardinals have been working closely with him. John
Osaylock spoke openly at the winter meetings, the Cardinals President
of Baseball Operations, of Hey, we're looking or we are
hoping to help Nolan Arnao facilitate a trade. He even
talked with his agent, and his agent was open and
honest about it. So it would be odd if the
(03:31):
Cardinals weren't communicating with Nolan r. And my guess is
is the Cardinals thought early on in this process that okay,
Nolan gave us permission earlier this offseason to explore talks
with the Houston Astros. They got this deal done in place,
and then they went to him, and for whatever reason,
something has changed and he does not want to go there.
I think in his heart of hearts, he still wants
(03:52):
to be an La Dodger, but I don't know if
the Dodgers have that much interest in him.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
Yeah, it's funny too, because what was this quote? He said,
the time is right, like the timing brothery not asking
you to come in for spring training today, like you
still got all offseason and do whatever the hell you want.
So I don't know, I just find it very very
interesting that they said the deal is still not off
the table. And I did like from an Astro's perspective, it's,
you know, they're they're looking to not go as much
(04:17):
money on Alex Bregman or any many years. And it
was interesting the caveat here that the Cardinals were going
to eat up a good portion to this salary so
the Astros wouldn't have to pay him as much. But
let me ask you this, if the terry does still,
you know, eventually go down, what's Arnato been like as
a player there in Saint Louis. I did notice the
power numbers dipped a little bit this year, going for
(04:39):
twenty six plus home runs in three straight seasons, only
sixteen this year. He does turn thirty four years old
when the season begins next year. But what has he
been like as a player there?
Speaker 2 (04:50):
Yeah, for the Saint Louis Cardinals, he's been defensively, still
the gold Glove caliber guy that you were expecting when
the Cardinals acquired. And he's still an elite defensive third basement.
That is one thing that has not tailed off in
his game. But I mean you mentioned his power numbers,
and for the Saint Louis Cardinals over the last two seasons,
his his offensive power has been in decline. You know,
(05:10):
twenty twenty two when he was here at the Saint
Louis Cardinals, he has what he what I would call
the breakout year for him here in Saint Lois and
yere one in twenty twenty one, he comes here, has
to adjust as a fly ball hitter to where, hey,
the ball doesn't carry well here in Saint Looks. So
he makes that adjustment finish his third and MVP voting
and then twenty twenty three, weird year Cardinals weren't very good.
He was dealing with some injuries, so some of that
(05:32):
power dissipated. And I thought last year going into the season,
I thought for sure he'd have that bounce back year,
but he was He didn't look right at the plate,
slug below four hundred this year and was more of
just a contact singles hitter that hit two seventy two
that the Cardinals eventually had to move outside the top
five of their lineup for a stretch this season. So
if he ends up going to Houston, maybe that Crawford
(05:54):
box and left ends up helping him out just a
little bit with his power numbers. But I'm not gonna
lie guys his off. I don't know if it will
bounce back to where he would be a guy that
you look at and say, hey, we need you to
be a top five hitter in our lineup and we
need you to start slugging. I just don't think he's
that guy anymore at the play.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Yeah, that's the crazy part. It's like if you're gonna,
if you're the Astros and you're willing to go, you know,
bringing a guy this, this older who may be onto
the clock, like we just did this with Jose Brad
You Like, I don't you know maybe maybe start taking
a chance on guys who were in their upper thirties.
But again, like, if you're gonna do that, then stick
with Alex Bregman. Then like give him what he wants
to keep him and will rod or die with him.
(06:30):
At least he's a fan favorite and fans will forgive
him if he stinks. But last one for you, Tanner.
We're talking with Tanner Hendrickson. I want I want a
ESPN up there in Saint Louis. If Arnado doesn't end
up in Houston, what do you think ultimately happens with him.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Well, I don't think he's gonna be a Cardinal. I
do think that the Cardinals will work to make a
trade happen. My guess is it's gonna be somewhere out East.
You know, I think he wants to be a Dodger.
I just don't see the Dodgers moving away from x
bunt He at third base and making it happen for
Nolan Arnado. Padres has basically said, hey, we don't have
the money to go out and acquire in Nolan Arnado.
(07:07):
I think he either ends up as a Philadelphia Philly
or whichever East team it is that loses out on Bregman,
the Red Sox or Yankees. I think they will call,
but he will not be here in Saint Louis. The
Cardinals have made this kind of public that they want
to make this trade happen. It feels like they're going
through a breakup, but they just have to live in
the same apartment until the lease expires since they're both
their names are on it. So I can't see him
(07:29):
being here in Saint Louis this season. I think he
gets dealt and I think it's going to be on
the East Coast.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
It's gonna be fascinating to see what happens. And again,
still not completely off the table. He could be a
Houston astro. We shall see Tanner hendrickson one on one
ESPN in Saint Louis. Tayner, thanks so much for the time, man.
Really appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Yeah, thanks for having me, guys, I appreciate it.
