Evangelist Jeff Kent and the Shadyside Church of Christ present a weekly lesson to help and encourage listeners in their daily walk with Christ and spread the Gospel. We are non-denominational and all lessons are taken directly from the scriptures.
We have all grown up believing in family and church traditions, legends and such like which have become "truth" for us. Many of these beliefs are not true at all. The Sadducees learned a hard lesson when they posed a question to Jesus whose answer to them included these words: "You are mistaken, not understanding the scriptures..." How well do we read and understand the scriptures?
With all of the shootings, fraud, drug overdosing, political divisiveness, etc. in the news, it's often difficult to think there's anything good in the world. We can't allow ourselves to be distracted by all the evil (one of the devil's tactics), but to develop a heart and eye to look for what is beautiful and good. God has set a lot of beauty in His world if we but look for it.

In our "throw away" society where people get new smart phones more often than a new pair of shoes, and ballplayers change teams when the wind changes direction, too many people are led to think they are replaceable also. But God has a different take on things. He knows and loves each and every person and wants each one to enjoy eternal life with Him. No one can be replaced.
Sometimes our problems in life seem overwhelming and insurmountable. Goliath of the Philistines was such a problem for Saul and Israel. They cowered in fear at this nine foot war machine. But David, the shepherd lad, had the answer. It was found in his heart, in his long-practiced skills, and in his God.
We know this is one of the things which Jesus said while being crucified. We might just explain this by saying that Jesus did what He was sent by His Father to do. This of course is true, but when we look at everything which Jesus accomplished and fulfilled in His life and death, we are again in awe of God and the purposes which He achieved in His Son Jesus Christ.
In the first century, people from both Jewish and pagan religious backgrounds were being added to this new church of Christ followers. In their former religions, they had traditions which they observed. The question became, then, what do we do in our new faith? Jesus and the apostles (by the Holy Spirit) passed down the "traditions" to the early church, and we still have them to follow today.
Over the years, kings, countries and individuals have claimed that God is on their side in some conflict or struggle. We see this all through history, and even in the events of today. Does God choose sides in these kinds of situations? Does God remain neutral in conflicts? Just how does this work?
James and John made a request of Jesus that they could sit in places of honor on either side of Him in the kingdom. Jesus had to set them straight about how to become "great." He said if you wanted to be great or be first in His kingdom you had to become a servant to all, just as He was. So what are some things we can do to become servants and become great in the kingdom? They might surprise you.
When our clothes get dirty and smelly we put them in the laundry basket and eventually into the wash machine to get clean. When a Christian sins, how does she get those sin stains removed? Only one thing can remove sin and that's the blood of Christ. So if we don't remain in the faith and bring our sins to Jesus for removal, will we be cleansed of those sins?
Because of the fierce competition in today's world, people want recognition for their accomplishments. Every person and every company is seen to promote themselves. The Lord is not averse to honoring people, but He does so for reasons different from the world, and He does it in a very different way.
Acts of evil and violence seem to be escalating in our world. Countries and individuals are taking lives for the most selfish of reasons and without remorse. What is the source of all of this? What should be the church's response? What can an individual Christian do?
Most of us dream (drool?) about what we would do if we won one of those multi-million dollar lotteries. New house and vehicles? Pay off all debts and loans? World travel? Maybe even do some good for those in need? But Jesus spoke of "true riches." And Paul writes of "the unfathomable riches of Christ." What are these? And how much are they worth?
Are you saved? Can you know for sure? Scholars and believers of all stripes have debated this over the years. To be sure of one's salvation, it must be based on something which cannot fail under any circumstances and will always be available. What would that be? Do you have it?
From the beginning, work has been a part of God's plan. Scripture records about creation: "By the seventh day God completed His work which He had done." Adam was given the task of tending the Garden. Even Jesus was a carpenter. So, work is part of human life, and is seen by God as necessary and important. How we do our work matters to God.
"The Thief on the Cross" #2 - Last time we heard Jesus make a promise to the one thief crucified beside Him, that he would be in Paradise that day with Jesus. Some folks today try to draw the conclusion from this that since this thief was not baptized then people today do not need to be baptized either. Two things make this position illogical and untenable. First, when correctly understood, scripture will never contrad...
One of the robbers crucified along with Jesus admitted his guilt and asked Jesus to remember him when He came into His kingdom. Jesus told him that he would be with Him in Paradise on that day. This event continues to be a point of controversy. What can we make of this? Is Jesus establishing another way to be saved without the need for being baptized? What else did this man NOT do which is taught elsewhere in scripture? Let&a...
After He was raised from the dead, Jesus told His disciples to go proclaim the gospel - this good news - to all creation. That Somebody came back from the dead and now promises eternal life to all those who will follow Him is incredibly great news! Why do His followers have so much trouble sharing it?
Jesus said "It is more blessed to give than to receive." In our very materialistic and self-centered world, even Christians have a hard time with this statement. Of course it's true, and we must find the blessedness in learning to give as God has given to us. Not only material possessions are in view, but skills, time, smiles, prayers, et al. And God even offers a special blessing for those who give freely.
Every Christian needs to engage in their own personal Bible reading and study. In order to help us in that pursuit, the Holy Spirit has provided in the word itself some key basics for profitable study. If we use these guidelines, we will keep ourselves from misinterpreting scripture and wandering too far to the right or to the left of the truth of God's word.
Last time, we observed that the devil is the master of lies and deception, opposing the word of truth and making counterfeit Christians. The devil met his match in the Son of God as Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil and provide His people with the weaponry to fight him off. The devil's final end may surprise you.

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
