La científica panameña Betzi Pérez-Ortega lleva años estudiando las hormonas del estrés y las comunicaciones entre los delfines de Bocas del Toro, para saber si la presencia de los botes de turismo los afecta. La pandemia por COVID-19 y las restricciones de movimiento en 2020 le presentaron una oportunidad única: la de entender lo que sucedería con esos delfines sin botes de turismo alrededor. En 2022, con el turismo reactivado, Betzi hace otra expedición a Bocas del Toro junto a la científica colombiana Dalia Barragán Barrera, que investiga la relación genética entre los delfines y los efectos de los contaminantes ambientales sobre ellos. Por medio de los llamados de los delfines y con muestras de sus hormonas, podrán estudiar las diferencias en sus niveles de estrés antes, durante y después de la pandemia.
