(00:23):
Welcome back to the AFC Donskas,it's great to have you with us
as we kick off a brand new Scottish Premiership season and
Grey Mackay and after a summer of transfer activity, pre season
friendlies and anticipation, it's finally time to get back to
business. Since the last pre season
episode the squad has been shaping up, the new signings
have had their first taste of action in red and the excitement
(00:43):
is building for what promises tobe another eventful campaign.
I'll be taking a look back at the final pre season March
against Ipswich Town, catching up on all the latest news from
the club and previewing what's ahead of us as the Dons get set
for their opening fixtures and of course that all important
Europa League draw and the opening game of the season
against Hearts. Whether you're listening on the
way to the match or tuning in from afar, we've got you covered
(01:05):
with all the latest updates, analysis and reaction as
Aberdeen aims to make their markthis season.
So settle in, because the new Premiership campaign starts here
and there's plenty to talk about.
(02:36):
Hello and welcome to the AFC DosGus.
We're going to get straight intoit as it's a busy 1 today.
So the Friday before last we faced Ipswich Town at Pittodrie
in our final pre season friendly.
Adam, Benny and now McGann previewed the game and Yam
Italian gave his thoughts ahead of the match.
This time Ipswich Town visited Pittodrie we had one of the most
famous games that this stadium has ever seen.
(02:57):
Sir Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen running out three one victors,
42IN aggregate as they knocked out Sir Bobby Robson's UEFA Cup
holders in that very competition.
But today it's all about the modern day heroes as Aberdeen's
Scottish Cup winners return to Pittodrie for the first time
since that famous afternoon at Hampden Park.
And I'm delighted to say I'm joined now by former Dons winger
(03:19):
and Red TV Co commentator Niall. And now just what are you
looking forward to about this match tonight?
I. Think it's just a freshness
smelling the grass. I think it's a shame on a new
look Aberdeen, Aberdeen team is how how they're going to prepare
going forward. Obviously a big season ahead
coming off the back of a a huge, huge cup success in the Scottish
Cup. They're coming up against a good
opposition. I think even coming off the back
(03:40):
of the Fulham game as well. So these are the type of games
the players will want to be involved with regarding sort of
going forward, of course, the season because because you're in
Europe, because you're playing at a very good level against
good opposition, These are the games that the players want to
be playing against. How different are these games on
pre season when you've got, you know, the week season starting
in just over a week's time? They're always difficult but
like anything, whether you're winning them or losing them,
(04:01):
it's just freaking out there, working on your match fitness
more, working on your match sharpness and manager getting
across his ideas obviously for the season ahead and what he
wants to achieve going forward. So good games and especially at
home, obviously thousands of fans come out in their numbers
as well. It's always nice.
Thank you so much for your time. You can hear more from now
McGinn on Red TV. Our live coverage starts at 7:15
this evening. Well Jimmy, we're approaching
(04:23):
the end of pre season. What you hoping to get out of
tonight's match against Steps Which?
I think like, first of all, it'snice to play here again, The
Pittodrie, it was some weeks agonow.
And then of course in front of our fans, that's the first
thing. The other thing is the things we
have worked on during the summer, how we want to be more
more better as a team, maybe a little bit more intense in some
(04:46):
parts of the game and also how we defend and how we attacking.
So the things we work on the thelast weeks now.
So that's what we want to see today.
Obviously tonight's match is a friendly but it's special for a
couple of reasons to the supporters.
The first being the history in this fixture, in particular the
European history. But also this is the first
chance that the fans at Patoji will get to see their team as
(05:07):
Scottish Cup winners return home.
Just how special a night you think it's going to be for the
supporters and do you think the players can can tap into that?
It's always special to play hereso I think it's going to be a
good atmosphere and then enjoy the game and see our our players
go out there again and and fighting Faberin.
Just in more general terms, whathave you made of pre season so
(05:27):
far and how productive do you think it's been?
I think we work really hard. The staff, the players,
everybody around the club, everybody want to make a good
season this year, so it's a lot of work, even behind, you know,
like behind the doors and everybody's contributed so much
so I'm really happy. I'll have everybody's pushing
(05:47):
each other and it's a good atmosphere and a good spirit.
Couple of new signings in the the starting 11 tonight.
What can we expect from from those guys and we can be expect
some some more minutes from someof the other signings who are on
the bench this evening as well. Yeah, we're going to make some
changes in in half time and thenlater on in the game.
So it's a lot of progression. I think some players is taking
steps forward and also Fletcher Boyd is making a really good
(06:10):
preseason and we're going to getsome videos today also.
So it's good to see all these young guys coming through, but
also the new sign is to show them for the first time for at
home at Petadri. Thanks for saying good luck.
Thank you so much. Aberdeen returned to Pittodrie
for our final preseason friendly, taking on Ipswich
time. The dawn started brightly with
early chances for Keskin and an Ashish, but it was Ipswich who
(06:32):
took the lead midway through thefirst half, Philogene finishing
from close range after a high press.
Hurst doubled their advantage before the break, reacting
quickest to a rebound in the second-half.
Milanovic and Clarkson both wentclose for Aberdeen ebbs which
strike again, Philogy netting a second to make it 3 nil.
The Dons did pull one back late on, with Ambrose scoring just
moments after coming on, but Ipswich held on for A31 win.
(06:56):
Jimmy, can we just start by getting your overall thoughts on
tonight's match? I think like these games we are
playing now against Fuller Manips, which is like the games
we want to play in the preparation for the season.
The intensity is high, the quality is high in the opponent
and we have some parts that we are doing really well with
today. But then also of course some of
the goals today we want to do better, but it's also a way to
(07:19):
grow as a team and improve ourselves.
So I think the games give us what we want, how which kind of
decision making intensity and when this when the games go
quick and also some good things that we we show today also now
in our attacking and the playerswho come in, in the second-half
also bring in energy and and we can use the whole squad and it's
(07:40):
going to be important this season that everybody's
contributing. So it was good to see everybody
was did some good things. Then we have still have things
we have to adjust for of course,But but for me and for the team,
these games against full land issues, it's really good to see
which level we want to push thisteam and and get better and
(08:00):
better. What sort of things do you think
the players can take from and learn from these matches against
Ipswich and the film? You know, especially with
European games coming coming up very soon as well.
And it's just the small details when, when you get punished
really hard, if you miss something, then then they are so
quick to, to use it against you. And, and the balance of the team
when we if we miss something, they are, they have this quality
(08:23):
and this speed to, to, to hurt the team and arrive to scoring
chance. And if you that's why this if
you try to building up all all the time to be the concentration
to be really clear what we want to do.
It's got a number of positives to take from tonight as well.
What do you think your team got right?
I think some they start again really well and they have some
good combinations and the way wefind a way to the goal and also
(08:47):
some parts in our structure. And and so I think in both parts
we have moments that were were quite good and then some parts
that we that we get these learning points when when we
miss and, and how they punish us.
There's a chance for a number ofthe new shinings as well to play
in front of the Pittodrie crowd for the first time.
How important do you think tonight was as an experience for
those guys? You see the numbers of people
(09:08):
who are here today. It was a friendly game and so
many showing up and the atmosphere is creating.
I think the new, new players understand what this club and
this team means for the city andour fans and that we are.
We have to always give everything for for them and I
think that's a good togethernessout there again today and that's
(09:33):
what we have to use this season. It's going to be important
during the whole season. It's going to be many
competitions we're going to playand many games and now we start
the season with this incredible atmosphere.
It was today in in in, so I think they enjoy it a lot.
Just finally, you've got the opening game of the week season
just over a week away. Are you expecting or hoping to
(09:54):
to add to the squad in any way before that match against
Hearts? I think it always when the
window is open, it's open but wefocus on the place we have and
trying to prepare us and focus on the right things and prepare
us for the the first game of theleague and and take it from
there. All the latest transfer news the
AFC Don's Cars Transfer Centre. There's been more transfer
(10:19):
activity since we last spoke, more going out than coming in
though. Senegalese forward Papi Habib
Gay has completed a permanent move to Turkish Super League
side Kasun Pasha, with the Dawnsreceiving a significant though
and disclosed transfer fee thought to be around £850,000.
He joined the Dons last summer, spent time on loan in Norway and
returned to help Aberdeen win the Scottish cap, scoring six
(10:41):
goals in his first eight games of the season before injury
strike. He departs having made 36
appearances, scoring 8 goals andproviding 2 assists for the
Dons. Defender Richard Jensen has left
Aberdeen. The Finnish international joined
the Dons last August and made 41appearances in his first season
of Pataudry. Jensen, who spent match the last
season on loan in Denmark, now departs in search of regular
(11:03):
first team football. Alfie Bavage has sealed a lone
move to Scottish League One sideInverness Carly Thistle and to
the end of the season. The 19 year old striker, a
product of the Aberdeen youth Academy and the Scotland Under
19 international, made its firstteam debut in February 2023
against Motherwell. Savage, who spent time alone at
Kelty Hearts and Air United lastseason, returns to Inverness
(11:24):
after an impressive spell there earlier this year, netting six
goals and 10 appearances before injury.
Cat has ran short. He'll now reunite with fellow
Don Alfie Stewart, who also joined Cali Thistle on loan
earlier this summer as both looked to make an impact in
Liguan. One near Kami Wilson has left
Pataudry to join EFL Championship side Derby County.
The talented 18 year old, who hails from Kintore, first joined
(11:47):
the Dons Academy from West Egg Boys Club and was involved in
the advance centre programme under Jim Crawford.
Kami, who's also part of the side that clinched the Club
Academy Scotland Under 18 leaguetitle in the 2324 season.
After two impressive campaigns with the under eighteens, Kami
was rewarded with a new contractin June 2024, extending his stay
with Aberdeen and to the summer of 2026, his 18th birthday, he
(12:09):
joined Highland League club A Keith on loan for the
second-half of the season. Going out on loan is Sam McLean,
Tristan Steven and Oliver Green who have all joined Lost in
mouth in the Highland League fora season long loan at Grand Park
and then at the Transfer News. We've stepped up the pursuit of
Serbian Under 21 striker Marco Lazettek, tabling a fresh
proposal to AC Milan. Talks are ongoing between the
(12:31):
Dons and the Seti R club after an initial bid was rejected,
with a Milan keen to the coup asmuch as the €4,000,000 they paid
Red Star for Lazette back in 2022.
It's not the first time Aberdeenhave moved for the 21 year old
and approached when January ran out of time before the transfer
window closed. But with Lazette on the fringes
at San Siro, the Dons have reignited an interest in the
(12:51):
last week, hoping to bring the forward to Pittodrie.
And finally, Aberdeen Women havestrengthened the squad with the
signing of promising young defender ABI Tobin following her
departure from Rangers. The versatile 18 year old, who
can play at both centre back andWimbach, arrives at Cormac Park
after a stand out loan spell with Hamilton Aki's.
She played a crucial role in Aki's SWPL 2 title winning
(13:12):
campaign, featuring an all 28 league matches and earning the
club's Young Player of the Year award.
Abbey's impressive form also sawa rewarded at international
level, making our Scotland and their 19 debut earlier this year
against Croatia, sharing the pitch with Carrot Don Amy Black
More. Don's news straight after this
(13:36):
trauma, before my dad was dead. Turns out he just left us, so
we've got some questions. Morning, Lee.
What's that #32 we're throwing it out.
Yoghurt parts. They're going to bramping.
Don't know. My darling comes in Andy.
We're looking for Dom. We're his sons.
(13:57):
Rude. So we just break in.
Can I help you are? You sure you want to do this
now? Of course. 24 hours a week.
And gets the food over. Somebody knows?
Oh, you bought? My dad, we're coming for you.

(14:46):
before the start of the season on Monday, chief executive Alan
Barrow sang the praises of Yevitolin during his first full
season with the club. Jimmy is a a brilliant leader.
See, first and foremost footballmanager person, phenomenal
leader. I, I, I think so highly of him.
His style has has meant the clubhas had to adjust as well as
(15:09):
well because it's, you know, it's not your traditional UK
British style manager and that'sbeen good and that's been really
helpful protecting the journey we've been going on.
But he'll run better for the year he's just had as well
because we started off so spectacularly well.
We went through a really disappointing, frustrating dip.
But he'll have learned a lot in that period of time.
And that's certainly framed about things like recruitment
and how we play and some of the pragmatism that you might have
(15:31):
to have in some of the elements.Again, don't underestimate for a
foreign manager coming into Scotland how much of A learning
cover is for them. So a year down for him, a
successful year and a sense in terms of loving the Scottish
Cup, but he knows and is more motivated than anyone to
continue that journey forward and that means success in
Europe, that means continue to challenge in the league and that
(15:52):
means continuing to try and get to the last stages and winning
trophies. Claim Sheny was also about to
give his thoughts on last seasonof what lies ahead this coming
season. I think the the big thing for us
this season away from, from trophies and and silverware and
I think it's consistency for us Last year we we lacked
consistency. We were sort of opposite ends of
(16:13):
the scale. We would either very, very good
or, or very, very bad and there was no in between.
We started off like a house on fire.
We won however many games it wasat the start and then we went on
a horrendous run of not winning in about 14 games, which it's so
different ends of the the scale. We managed to get back on track,
(16:34):
we had some great results after that.
We go into the top six, we beat Hibs, we put us into the
position where we want to be fighting and then we lost the
last four games of the season. So it was so up and down and
then we go on to win the cup. So the inconsistency was was was
so bad for us last season so we want to change that.
We want to be more consistent throughout the season and if we
(16:58):
can do that then it'll be a goodseason again.
And the man himself, Yummy Talim, provided his thoughts
ahead to the match against Hearts yesterday.
I think I don't need to say so much.
I think that the players lived it and and feel it and and I
think this even before we win inthe cup, this togetherness we
have created with our fans and we have some hard times, as you
(17:21):
said last season, but the supporters were there and I
think that's the I hope that's agood journey.
We have to make this we have in mind.
We won't talk about this three years plan and then we have done
these three. We have to move on again, but we
haven't an imagination, you know, had where we want to be
after three years. And now we're in the second
(17:42):
season and we we still growing and and and try to improve every
season. So I think this electric
atmosphere and also this historical club there was, you
know, it's not so many times. Maybe a career can have these
emotions, but you always have tobe hunger to leave it again so
(18:02):
that the passion and the drive inside the club is of course
this coupling will help with that for sure.
And you can watch the interviewswith Alan Barrows and Graham
Shinny in full on red TV. So to the March then.
And Aberdeen's Tynecastle curse continues, now stretching to 24
games without a win in Gorgie after a frustrating 2 nil
(18:23):
defeat. The Hearts on the opening day of
the Premiership season. New sightings Adel Ashish,
Cassini, Yankee and Nicholas Milanovic were all haunted
debuts in a match played in wildblustery conditions courtesy of
the tail end of Storm Flores. The dawn started brightly with
Ashish firing wide early on but fell behind on 11 minutes when a
go mouse scramble ended in heartbreak claim Shinny
deflected into his own net. Hearts nearly made it 2 minutes
(18:46):
later but Milne's curling effortrattled the bar.
Yankee strike the post on 16 minutes in Aberdeen's best
chance of the first half. Just before the break, Hearts
thought they dabbled the lead through Shankland, only for VAR
to chalk it off for offside. Into the second-half the Dons
looked more dangerous. Yankee missed a golden chance to
equalise from a Clarkson free kick and Milanovic forced to
save from Clark shortly after. But it was Hearts who struck
(19:08):
next, Finley heading home a flick on from Milne's delivery
on 73 minutes despite late chances from a Oshish and Jack
Melon. We couldn't find a way through.
Final score at 10 Castle. Hearts 2 Aberdeen now.
Jimmy, can you just give us youroverall thoughts after that one?
No, I think we have a plan in the first half that we should be
(19:29):
a little bit better with the ball today because we know they
were intense and pressing well, but they they win this battle.
In the first half we got a lot of second balls.
We don't get the Riddle with theball we didn't get out with as
we want and then they are good to pick up the second ball and
put another momentum, another ball in the box and they were
strong in this moment. In the second-half.
(19:50):
I think we were better with the ball and start creating chances
but again this bad on the pitch. This 5050 dual stay was stronger
today. That's what also the wheel
again. Fine margins, wasn't it?
You think of the big chance at falls to Cassini, Yangi and the
second-half. Is it just about being a bit
more clinical in both boxes today?
Yeah, that's The thing is like even if outside the on the
pitch, still the box is really, really important and we have a
(20:14):
few chances, they have a few, but they were in this moment,
they were better than we than wewere today and that's why they
win the game again. What do you think the team will
win from today's defeat? It's this, this 5050 view.
It's so, so crucial. It's always a moment of can
happen and then it's a rebound or whatever.
(20:34):
We have to keep playing in this moment and and try to protect us
better. But also in the opposite box we
have some rebounds, Tray also, but they were they were faster
and also on these rebounds and clear the ball.
Three competitive debuts for summer signings today as well.
What did you make of of their contribution and how important
will it be to to get some more minutes in in their legs as
Aberdeen players? I think everybody is growing all
(20:55):
the time of course, and we need to.
But I think this process if I did some really good game all
over the game, more or less and then Mila did some good, good
things also and and Jangi arrived to the chances.
But of course we need to keep arriving then this chances and
try to get this scoring chances. It doesn't get any easier next
(21:18):
week how much you're looking forward to to the test of
welcoming Celtic to to Passodry.Of course we want to play again
and we will be ready for that game and and that we need to
improve some parts this week. Thank you for your time.
Thank you so much. Thank you.

On the first weekend of the Premiership, Livingston marked
their top flight return with A2 all draw at Kilmarnock.
Josh Mcpink scored a hat trick at Saint Johnstone Thrash,

Partick Thistle 5/1 at McDermottPark and their Championship

all between Wraith Rovers and Queens Park at Starks Park.
Martin and Dunferman Athletic drew nil nil at Capilo.
Carly Thistle were three nil winners away to Kelty Hearts in
League One, while Queen of the South enjoyed A2 nil victory at

Premiership campaign with A1 nilhome win over St Madden thanks
to a late goal from Luke Mccowan.
Kieran Bowie scored a first halfdouble as Hibs started the
season with A21 win at Dundee, whose goal came from Finley.
Robertson and Falkirk twice camefrom behind as they marked their
(23:26):
top flight return with A2 all draw at home to Dundee United in
Sunday's early game. It was another action part
weekend in the Highland League. We'll start at Spain Park where
banks of D were held to A1 all draw by Keith.
The visitors battled hard and came away with a valuable point
against a strong D side. City made it two wins from 2,
comfortably dispatching Strathspey Thistle 3 nil.
(23:46):
Like Lee Park, the hedge men arealready looking sharp and mean
business this season. Becky Thistle also maintained
their perfect start, edging out Lossy Mouth to one of Victoria
Park, while Tenniff United made a statement on the road with a
convincing 3 nil win over Devonvale at Princess Royal
Park. Forest mechanics were too strong
for Rothes, running out two nil winners at Moss at Park and
(24:07):
Phrasing, but I sent out a message of intent with a
dominant 3 nil win over Broda Rangers at Bellesley.
It was a shock at Harlow Park asHuntley thrashed Inverurie
locals 3 NIL away from home, a huge result for the Black and
Golds and then County edged out Clap the Cadden One NIL in a
tighter fate at Station Park. But for Martin, United picked up
their first win of the campaign with a three win victory at Wick
(24:28):
Academy. Aberdeen Women.
We're back at the Balmoral Stadium for our second preseason
outing of the 2526 campaign, taking on recently relegated
Dandy United. The Sunday before last were
first starts for new signings Anna Prower and Goal and
defender Abigail Tobin and both impressed on a competitive
afternoon. The Dons were dominant for match
(24:49):
of the first half, with Kerry Beatty eventually breaking the
deadlock in the 37th minute after a pinpoint through ball
from Tobin. Beatty showed real composure,
curling a brilliant finish and off the post to give Aberdeen A1
nil lead at the break. We continue to press early in
the second-half, with chances falling to Darcy Miller and more
dangerous deliveries from Tobin out wide.
Elioski was stand out in midfield, showing her
(25:10):
versatility and drive in both directions.
But Dundee United founded equaliser midway through the
second-half as Alex Moody capitalised on a defensive lapse
to lob Proer and make it one O. Despite late pressure and a
triple substitution from Scott Booth, Aberdeen couldn't find a
winner and we wrapped up our preseason campaign on Sunday
afternoon with a trip to face Glasgow City.
(25:32):
Scott Booth named an unchanged starting 11 from last weekend's
draw with Dandy United and his side responded well after
falling behind early. City opened the scoring on 5
minutes through Natalia Robo butAberdeen grew into the game
creating chances of their own. Eva Thompson tested Lee Gibson
from range and Darcy Miller fired narrowly over in a
promising spell for the Dons. Amy Black also came close from a
(25:53):
corner, while I'll Be Hardison passed up a pair of good
opportunities for the host before the break Into the
second-half and after a bright start, Aberdeen found themselves
punished again. Nicole Kuzlova capitalised on a
stray back pass to make it 2 nilon 64 minutes.
The Dons continued to push forward for Francesco Ogilvy at
the try list, combining well later on, but they couldn't find
(26:14):
a way through and despite the result, there were plenty of
positives for Scott Blue side totake into their league opener in
two weeks time. When we face champions Hibs, the
key question is where do we begin?
Who do you want to go for? It went up.
You can't be proud of that. Indeed, it did go up and you are
(26:35):
making the choice not to do that.
That's right, isn't it? Big questions.
Isn't that the definition of political opportunism?
Unmissable moment. Classic BBC there.
Classic. Oh yeah.
Newsnight. Thanks everyone.
